Avocado production has boomed worldwide in recent years, and Spain, including the Canary Islands, has been no exception. The number of avocado growers in the region has increased significantly as growers recognize the potential of this crop. However, several species of spider mites (Tetranychidae) pose a risk to this crop, with the genus Oligonychus being the most diverse and having the greatest economic impact. In particular, Oligonychus perseae (Tuttle, Baker and Abbatiello) has been reported as the one mainly responsible for the economic damage in major avocado-producing regions worldwide. In this paper, we aim to present an overview of the studies conducted and the measures implemented to mitigate the impact of O. perseae after its arrival in the Canary Islands. Our objective is to provide a detailed description of the current status of this pest (O. perseae), with special attention to its situation 17 years after its first appearance in avocado crops in the Canary Islands. The socio-environmental crisis in which we find ourselves makes it necessary to promote a citizenship capable of facing global challenges in an informed, critical, and participatory manner. Given the shortcomings of environmental education practices and the limitations of teachers to develop effective activities in their classrooms, it is necessary to review and redefine teacher training. In accordance with the case study research method, we present the results of the implementation of an activity for teacher training on environmental socio-scientific issues: the production and consumption of avocados in Spain. The aim is to find out how students use the evidence and what perspectives they integrate when making argued decisions, which will allow us to assess the didactic potential of the designed activity and contribute to the consolidation of the didactic dimension of eco-social education. The results show the students' ability to use the evidence in a critical and reflective way, sometimes oriented toward the search for and proposal of solutions, and also their ability to address the problem using a systemic approach, integrating different perspectives, including political, economic, social, ecological, ethical, health, local, and global considerations. Mango is one of the main subtropical crops growing in southern Spain. Spanish mango fruit production can be efficiently transported to the rest of Europe, and these mangoes are very appreciated for their quality and flavour. However, postharvest rots have been detected in stored mango fruits, making their commercialization difficult. The causal agents associated with such rot symptoms have been isolated and identified. Because the mango crops used to share the same growing area with avocado crops, fungal presence on surrounding asymptomatic avocado fruits was also analysed to detect potential cross infections. Artificial inoculation with Neofusicoccum parvum and N. mediterraneum was able to reproduce rot symptoms in mango but was also able to induce rots in avocado fruits. To approach a biological control strategy against these rot-producing fungi, two very well-known antagonistic biocontrol bacteria, Pseudomonas chlororaphis PCL1606, and Bacillus velezensis UMAF6639, were tested. The obtained results revealed that both bacteria can control the fungal rots on stored mango and avocado fruits under controlled conditions. Additionally, the strain B. velezensis UMAF6639 showed the ability to persist on the fruit surface of adult commercial trees in experiments under open field conditions, helping to prevent the appearance of these postharvest diseases.
