Response styles present a threat to the validity of data from Likert scales. This study evaluates a brief personality test administered by interviewers to a diverse Chinese sample, focusing on two factors with direct impacts on response styles, the midpoint designs and the inclusion of reversely-worded items. We randomly assign respondents into three midpoint designs: masked midpoint, explicit midpoint and removed midpoint. Cronbach's alpha tends to be low and is not drastically affected by midpoint designs. Score reliability estimates from the removed and explicit midpoint designs are above or close to.60 along the whole score range for openness, but not the other subscales. The masked midpoint design presents some advantages in criterion relationship validity evidence based on correlations with demographic, behavioral, subjective and cognitive variables. Dropping reversely-worded items increases the estimates of Cronbach's alpha, but shows no positive effects on the criterion relationship validity. In conclusion, for interviewer-administered brief personality scales applied to Chinese respondents, masked midpoint design that aims to reduce a possible overuse of midpoint presents some advantages in the overall psychometric properties, but the inclusion of reversely-worded items shows mixed effects. Reflux hypersensitivity (RH) is a subtype of gastroesophageal reflux disease. The Rome IV criteria separated RH from the original nonerosive reflux disease subgroup and classified it as a new functional oesophageal disease. Recently, the pathogenesis of RH has become the focus of research. According to the latest research reports, upregulation of acid-sensitive receptors, distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide-positive nerve fibres, and psychiatric comorbidity have key roles in the pathogenesis of RH. Magnesium is an essential nutrient required to maintain brain health throughout life, and adequate magnesium intake is positively associated with cognitive performance in older adults. However, sex differences in magnesium metabolism have not been adequately assessed in humans. We investigated sex differences in the effect of dietary magnesium intake and the risk of different types of cognitive impairment in older Chinese adults. We collected and assessed dietary data and cognitive function status in people aged 55 years and older in northern China who participated in the Community Cohort Study of Nervous System Diseases from 2018 to 2019 to explore the relationship between dietary magnesium intake and the risk of each type of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in sex-specific cohorts of older adults. The study included 612 people: 260 (42.5%) men and 352 (57.5%) women. Logistic regression results showed that for the total sample and women's sample, high dietary magnesium intake reduced the risk of amnestic MCI (ORtotal = 0.300; ORwomen = 0.190) and multidomain amnestic MCI (ORtotal = 0.225; ORwomen = 0.145). The results of restricted cubic spline analysis showed that the risk of amnestic MCI (ptotal = 0.0193; pwomen = 0.0351) and multidomain amnestic MCI (ptotal = 0.0089; pwomen = 0.0096) in the total sample and women's sample gradually decreased with increasing dietary magnesium intake. Epidemic maps, by incorporating outbreak characteristics and visually presenting the data, have become the primary means for the public to grasp spatiotemporal risk insights. This study aims to provide design strategies to enhance the readability and risk perception effectiveness of epidemic maps, optimizing their visual design to improve information acquisition efficiency and risk perception efficacy. Employing a synthesis of event-related potentials and questionnaires, we integrate participants’ subjective perceptions for six epidemic map types with EEG metrics, probing the cognitive underpinnings as they engage with diverse symbol and risk categorizations. The results reveal significant differences in participants’ subjective risk perception scores across the six types of epidemic maps, with notable variances in the amplitude and latency of P200 and P300 components triggered by these different maps. The above findings indicate: (1) Point-symbol epidemic maps exhibit a higher arousal level, more effectively capturing individual attention; (2) Area-symbol characteristics in low-risk contexts aid in enhancing information retrieval efficiency; (3) High-level risk information garners more attentional resources from individuals. Abstract\nPlain Language SummaryResearch on the relationship between macrophages and neuropathic pain has flourished in the past two decades. It has long been believed that macrophages are strong immune effector cells that play well-established roles in tissue homeostasis and lesions, such as promoting the initiation and progression of tissue injury and improving wound healing and tissue remodeling in a variety of pathogenesis-related diseases. They are also heterogeneous and versatile cells that can switch phenotypically/functionally in response to the micro-environment signals. Apart from microglia (resident macrophages of both the spinal cord and brain), which are required for the neuropathic pain processing of the CNS, neuropathic pain signals in PNS are influenced by the interaction of tissue-resident macrophages and BM infiltrating macrophages with primary afferent neurons. And the current review looks at new evidence that suggests sexual dimorphism in neuropathic pain are caused by variations in the immune system, notably macrophages, rather than the neurological system.Neuropathic pain is defined by the International Association for the Study of Pain as pain triggered or caused by primary damage to or dysfunction of the nervous system. Following intensive research into the mechanisms of neuropathic pain, macrophages have been revealed to play an important role in pathologic pain following nerve injury. Macrophages dynamically monitor the microenvironment to maintain tissue homeostasis. Once a macrophage is exposed to a pathologic stimulus, it in turn alters its functional phenotype and interacts with nociceptors, leading to neuropathic pain. This review wants to delve into the biology of macrophages in the central and peripheral nervous system, how they are related to play a role in neuropathic pain and whether there is sexual dimorphism in macrophages. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) that combine electrochemistry with biological methods have gained attention in the remediation of polluted environments, including wastewater, sludge, sediments, and soils. The most attractive advantage of BESs is that the solid electrode is used as an inexhaustible electron acceptor or donor, and biocurrent directly converted from organics can afford the reaction energy of contaminant breakdown, crossing the internal energy barrier of endothermic degradation, which achieves a continuous biodegradation process without the simultaneous use of exogenetic chemicals and bioelectricity recovery. However, soil BESs are hindered by expensive electrode materials, difficult pollutant and electron transfer, low microbial competitive activity, and biocompatibility in contamination remediation. Fortunately, introducing biochar into soil BESs could reveal a high potential in addressing these BES inadequacies. The characteristics of biochar, e.g., conductivity, transferability, high specific surface area, high porosity, large functional groups, and biocompatibility, can improve the performance of soil BESs. In fact, biochar not only carries electrons but also transfers nutrients, pollutants, and even bacteria by facilitating transmission in the bioelectric field of BESs. Consequently, the abilities of biochar make for better functionality of BESs. This review collates information on the roles, application, and progress of biochar in soil BESs, and future prospects are given. It is beneficial for environmental researchers and engineers to extend BES application in environmental remediation and to assist the progress of carbon sequestration and emission reduction based on the inertia of biochar and the blocking of electron flow to form methane. A feature comparison between BES and conventional techniques was made. Biochar characteristics match the deficiencies of bioelectrochemical remediation. Rail surface damage occurs due to repeated overstressing of the surface by wheel-rail contact cycles, which is also known as rolling contact fatigue, and causes regular costly maintenance expenses to railways. The preventive strategies to reduce rail damage can be conservative if it is not based on measured data. A validated digital model of the physical system can provide data for maintenance decision. Interaction between a physical system and a digital model has evolved at the beginning of this century into a new process commonly referred to by the term 'Digital Twin'. There is a lack of a Digital Twin framework in decision-making on railway maintenance. The term Digital Twin is often confused with advanced simulation methods where the communication of data is only one way, i.e. sensor or design data of the physical system input to a model. In this paper, a Digital Twin has been developed to predict rolling contact fatigue rail surface damage, corresponding to traffic passing along a railway network. Differences between the Digital Twin and advanced simulation techniques have been presented. Finally, a predictive assessment tool has been proposed to provide prediction from the Digital Twin to the physical twin, and results are discussed.
