In the electrostatic precipitation of microparticles, it is common to evaluate the voltages between the corona onset voltage and the breakdown point. However, the charging of particles in the nanoscale size range mainly occurs by diffusion, suggesting the possibility of its occurrence, even at low values. This paper investigates the implications of a wide range of electric fields applied in the collection of nanoparticles (6.15–241.4 nm). Two electrostatic precipitators (P.I. and P.II.), both with plates 10 cm high and 30 cm long, but with different plate spacings (4 and 6.5 cm), were tested using three air velocities (1.9, 2.9, and 3.9 cm/s) and 36 electric fields (0.0 − 5.0 kV/cm). Under the highest electric fields, both precipitators showed efficiencies above 99.9%. Furthermore, nanoparticles were collected before the corona onset voltage, with efficiencies of around 28% (P.I.) and 35% (P.II.). Even though no current was detected by the high voltage source, charges on the particles were measured in electric fields lower than 3.0 kV/cm. The higher the applied voltage, the higher the residual charge of the particles at the precipitator outlet. Non-compliance with EU environmental policy not only impedes Europeanization, but jeopardizes the protection of human health and the environment. However, research on failed policy implementation still applies traditional top-down or bottom-up approaches and disregards complex actor constellations and contextualization. The research in this paper applies a comprehensive multi-level governance (MLG) approach to overcome this gap and explain non-compliance with EU environmental policy. We conducted a qualitative analysis of non-compliance with the Air Quality Directive (2008/50/EC) within an MLG context, based on a case study in Germany. Our findings revealed a dynamic interplay of local government's lack of action, an absence of serious support and pressure from superordinate levels, business actors exerting influence across all levels, and media reporting contributing to misinformation, all of which contribute to non-compliance. Air pollution has caused many risks to people, but little research has been done on the effect of residents' air pollution risk perception on their subjective well-being. In order to reveal their relationship, this paper divides air pollution risk perception into four dimensions: risk controllability, risk trust, risk acceptability and risk effect, and explores the effects of different dimensions of air pollution risk perception on subjective well-being based on the structural equation model. The results show that risk controllability, risk trust and risk acceptability can improve well-being, while risk effect can reduce well-being, and air quality satisfaction plays a mediating role. There are also internal influencing mechanisms among different air pollution risk perceptions. Particularly, in areas with poor air quality, risk controllability had a negative association with air quality satisfaction, and higher risk effect corresponded to a higher degree of risk controllability. The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) gathered data between 1989 and 1997 to build an "objective database" to further understand the occupational exposures generated by the few asbestos-containing materials remaining at various steelmaking companies at this time. This paper analyzed the 520 samples from this campaign which occurred at five different steel manufacturers: Georgetown Steel Company, Inland Steel Company, Ling-Temco-Vought (LTV) Corporation, United States Steel Corporation, and Weirton Steel Corporation. This database is believed to have never previously been systematically organized. Samples were grouped based on sampling times to determine whether they should most appropriately be compared to the OSHA short-term excursion limit (EL) or the 8-hr time-weighted average (TWA) permissible exposure limit (PEL). Sampling times of 30 min or less were considered short-term samples, and samples of 180 min or greater were considered representative workday samples. Samples that did not fit into either category, with sampling times between 31 and 179 min, were considered task samples. Overall, the data indicated that the airborne concentrations were quite low in 1989 and they continued to be low through the study period which ended in 1997. Only seven out of 286 (approximately 2.5%) short-term or representative workday samples were in exceedance of the current OSHA OELs that were implemented in 1994 (short-term samples being compared to the 1 f/cc EL and representative workday samples being compared to the 0.1 f/cc 8-hr TWA PEL). Consistent with prior data, analysis of this dataset supports the view that materials containing asbestos were not used in many applications in the steel industry, and measured airborne concentrations of asbestos were almost always below the occupational exposure limits (OELs) in the post-OSHA era (1972–2000). Several coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) were built in South Africa, mainly in the central Mpumalanga Province, due to an increase in the demand for Eskom, the national power utility, to keep up with socio-economic growth. The CFPPs, of which 90% are owned by Eskom, generate a significant share of the country’s electricity but contribute to the air pollution experienced in the country. The paper discusses sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter of size less than 10 micrometre (μm) in diameter (PM10), using data from 2014 to 2018. The statistics revealed higher PM10 concentrations during winter than in summer and spring at the Kriel and Komati sites; associated with the higher contribution of domestic burning. The study’s results could influence legislation and policies and help to understand the source of poor ambient air quality by assessing the three pollutants within the area of the selected power plants. Borrowing decisions typically involve processing large amounts of financial information. However, it has been understudied whether cognitive capacity factors such as air pollution affect borrowing behaviours. In this paper, we estimate the causal impact of air pollution on borrowing behaviours by using the universe of borrowing application data on an online peer-to-peer platform and a thermal inversion instrument. We find that a 1% increase in air pollution reduces the number of borrowing applications and the total amount requested by 0.05% and 0.31% respectively. The impact is stronger when the borrowing is for more complex and less necessary purposes, and when we examine the areas with lower educational attainment. With a two-stage analysis framework, this paper investigates how information communication technology can improve the sustainable performance of smart tourism destinations. It analyzes the impact of online attention (in the form of activity on a search engine) and the level of the digital economy on sustainable performance of smart tourism destinations, measured using an advanced data envelopment analysis model. The empirical results from 50 key smart tourism destinations in China show that: (1) the average value of smart destination performance from 2008 to 2019 is 0.74; (2) both online attention and digital economy have significant positive impacts on sustainable performance; (3) digital economy positively moderates the impact of online attention on sustainable performance; (4) undesirable outputs (air pollution) and tourist satisfaction are two factors that can be considered in measuring the sustainable performance of a destination. This article discusses the progress and challenges of sustainable development in China. It highlights the efforts made by the government to reduce pollution, mitigate carbon emissions, and restore ecosystems, resulting in improved air quality and leadership in green technologies. However, the article also acknowledges the need for further evaluation of existing policies and ambitious responses from both the public and private sectors. The article introduces a collection of papers by young environmental economists that delve into various aspects of sustainable development, including environmental monitoring, biodiversity conservation, government social media's role in governance, regional carbon markets, tax enforcement, air pollution, and extreme weather events. We examine whether air pollution surrounding corporate headquarters affects CEO turnover. We assume that CEOs tend to have higher quality of life requirements and are more sensitive to air pollution. Using the data of A-share listed companies in China from 2000 to 2019, we empirically find that compared to CEOs experiencing clean air, those exposed to air pollution are more likely to depart and relocate to areas with better air quality. Additionally, these results are more pronounced when CEOs come from relatively less polluted overseas regions and when firms are located in regions with a higher degree of economic development, and they operate in highly competitive industries. These findings expand upon the factors that influence CEO turnover and provide empirical evidence that regional air pollution will bring about the flow of human capital, or even the loss of talents. This study seeks to investigate how natural resources rents impact environmental sustainability measured by CO2 emissions and PM2.5 air pollution in Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) economies from 1995 to 2019. To enhance robust policy implications, natural resources are decomposed into disaggregated (coal, gas, oil, forest, and mineral rents) and aggregated (total natural resources rents) indicators. Besides, the intervening roles of affluence, urbanization, and green policies vectoring green technological innovation, green finance, green energy, and waste management within the theoretical underpinning of STIRPAT model are considered. The empirical verification is anchored on second-generation estimators entailing Common Correlated Effects Mean Group, Augmented Mean Group, and Panel Quantile Regression. Similarly, Fully Modified OLS is employed to gauge the country-specific effects amidst varying robustness analyses. The fallouts from the analyses reveal that natural resources rents inhibit the attainments of environmental sustainability in BRICS economies by positively driving CO2 emissions and PM2.5 air pollution. Conversely, green policies are observed to substantially drive environmental sustainability by mitigating both pollutants whereas affluence and urbanization escalate them. The distributional effects from Panel Quantile Regression and Fully Modified OLS corroborate the main findings divergently. Additionally, two channels of causality, including unidirectional and bidirectional nexuses, are apparent from the estimated models. Policy measures are suggested based on the empirical findings. Nitrate has been recognized as a key aerosol component in regional haze formation in China. However, reducing nitrate aerosol concentration remains a major challenge. Generally, the formation of particulate nitrate (NO3-) is mainly affected by two processes: oxidation (to generate gaseous HNO3 or particulate NO3-) and gas-particle partitioning (HNO3-NO3- partition). Here, we proposed a new method to explore the contributions of above two processes ( C Oxi obs (%) and C G / P obs (%)) to nitrate formation based on field observation, and combined theoretical calculation and modeling to verify it. Quantitative results showed that gas-particle partitioning process (average C G / P obs (%) was 64.90%) always contributed more than oxidation process (average C Oxi obs (%) was 35.10%) for particulate nitrate formation under different pollution scenarios in the ambient environment. We argued that this phenomenon was mainly caused by high aerosol pH (>4.5). Nevertheless, as pollution level rose, the C Oxi obs (%) will also increase (contributing to 32%, 38%, 40% and 41% under clean, light, medium and heavy pollution levels) which may be attributed to the increased HNO3 production rate and relatively enhanced heterogeneous reaction pathway. The results indicate future strategies for prevention and control of nitrate pollution should both consider reducing precursors emission and regulating aerosol acidity, in order to increase the effectiveness of reducing nitrate dominated pollution.
