Background: Natural language processing, such as ChatGPT, demonstrates growing potential across numerous research scenarios, also raising interest in its applications in public health and epidemiology. Here, we applied a bibliometric analysis for a systematic assessment of the current literature related to the applications of ChatGPT in epidemiology and public health. Methods: A bibliometric analysis was conducted on the Biblioshiny web-app, by collecting original articles indexed in the Scopus database between 2010 and 2023. Results: On a total of 3431 original medical articles, "Article" and "Conference paper", mostly constituting the total of retrieved documents, highlighting that the term "ChatGPT" becomes an interesting topic from 2023. The annual publications escalated from 39 in 2010 to 719 in 2023, with an average annual growth rate of 25.1%. In terms of country production over time, the USA led with the highest overall production from 2010 to 2023. Concerning citations, the most frequently cited countries were the USA, UK, and China. Interestingly, Harvard Medical School emerges as the leading contributor, accounting for 18% of all articles among the top ten affiliations. Conclusions: Our study provides an overall examination of the existing research interest in ChatGPT's applications for public health by outlining pivotal themes and uncovering emerging trends. Translation is one of the fields that have benefited from the significant growth that Natural Language Processing has witnessed. ChatGPT is one of the prominent products of such development promoted for its capability of producing human-like translation, among many other things. The main aim of this article is to explore the ability of ChatGPT to translate separable phrasal verbs, which can pose a real challenge to translators as one or more words separate their parts. Therefore, the significance of this paper stems from the pressing necessity to evaluate the utilization of such a tool to address such specific translation issues as it attempts to answer the question of to what extent ChatGPT can translate separable phrasal verbs clearly and accurately. This research paper has followed the qualitative method to analyze the accuracy and clarity of the translation of the separable phrasal verbs generated by ChatGPT. This narrative review delves into the potential applications of large language models (LLMs) in VIR, with a focus on Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) and similar models. LLMs, designed for natural language processing, exhibit promising capabilities in clinical decision-making, workflow optimization, education, and patient-centered care. The discussion highlights LLMs' ability to analyze extensive medical literature, aiding radiologists in making informed decisions. Moreover, their role in improving clinical workflow, automating report generation, and intelligent patient scheduling is explored. This article also examines LLMs' impact on VIR education, presenting them as valuable tools for trainees. Additionally, the integration of LLMs into patient education processes is examined, highlighting their potential to enhance patient-centered care through simplified and accurate medical information dissemination. Despite these potentials, this paper discusses challenges and ethical considerations, including AI over-reliance, potential misinformation, and biases. On November 30,2022, OpenAI released an AI based chatbot called ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer). This Al system uses natural language processing (NLP) techniques to generate written text by learning the patterns and structures of natural language. ChatGPT is a versatile chatbot with the ability to write speeches, news articles, and essays either wholly or partially. Some users acknowledge ChatGPT as a co-author of the generated text, while others only acknowledge its use in writing the document. In fact, this issue became so pressing in acade# nia that Springer Nature, the world's largest academic publisher, announced that software like ChatGPT cannot be credited as an author in papers published in its thousands of journals. However, the question of authorship when working with text generator Chatbots remains an open issue. Following the release of ChatGPT other Chatbots, such as Google's Bard and AutoGPT have emerged. Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT possess advanced capabilities in understanding and generating text. These capabilities enable ChatGPT to create text based on specific instructions, which can serve as augmented data for text classification tasks. Previous studies have approached data augmentation (DA) by either rewriting the existing dataset with ChatGPT or generating entirely new data from scratch. However, it is unclear which method is better without comparing their effectiveness. This study investigates the application of both methods to two datasets: a general-topic dataset (Reuters news data) and a domain-specific dataset (Mitigation dataset). Our findings indicate that: 1. ChatGPT generated new data consistently enhanced model's classification results for both datasets. 2. Generating new data generally outperforms rewriting existing data, though crafting the prompts carefully is crucial to extract the most valuable information from ChatGPT, particularly for domain-specific data. 3. The augmentation data size affects the effectiveness of DA; however, we observed a plateau after incorporating 10 samples. 4. Background: Due to the importance of evidence-based research in plastic surgery, the authors of this study aimed to assess the accuracy of ChatGPT in generating novel systematic review ideas within the field of craniofacial surgery. Methods: ChatGPT was prompted to generate 20 novel systematic review ideas for 10 different subcategories within the field of craniofacial surgery. For each topic, the chatbot was told to give 10 "general" and 10 "specific" ideas that were related to the concept. In order to determine the accuracy of ChatGPT, a literature review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane. Results: In total, 200 total systematic review research ideas were generated by ChatGPT. We found that the algorithm had an overall 57.5% accuracy at identifying novel systematic review ideas. ChatGPT was found to be 39% accurate for general topics and 76% accurate for specific topics. Conclusion: Craniofacial surgeons should use ChatGPT as a tool. We found that ChatGPT provided more precise answers with specific research questions than with general questions and helped narrow down the search scope, leading to a more relevant and accurate response. Beyond research purposes, ChatGPT can augment patient consultations, improve healthcare equity, and assist in clinical decisionmaking. The success of the conversational AI system ChatGPT has triggered an avalanche of studies that explore its applications in research and education. There are also high hopes that, in addition to such particular usages, it could lead to artificial general intelligence (AGI) that means to human-level intelligence. Such aspirations, however, need to be grounded by actual scientific means to ensure faithful statements and evaluations of the current situation. The purpose of this article is to put ChatGPT into perspective and to outline a way forward that might instead lead to an artificial special intelligence (ASI), a notion we introduce. The underlying idea of ASI is based on an environment that consists only of text. We will show that this avoids the problem of embodiment of an agent and leads to a system with restricted capabilities compared to AGI. Testing of ChatGPT has recently been performed over a diverse range of topics. However, most of these assessments have been based on broad domains of knowledge. Here, we test ChatGPT's knowledge of tinnitus, an important but specialized aspect of audiology and otolaryngology. Testing involved evaluating ChatGPT's answers to a defined set of 10 questions on tinnitus. Furthermore, given the technology is advancing quickly, we re-evaluated the responses to the same 10 questions 3 and 6 months later. The accuracy of the responses was rated by 6 experts (the authors) using a Likert scale ranging from 1 to 5. Most of ChatGPT's responses were rated as satisfactory or better. However, we did detect a few instances where the responses were not accurate and might be considered somewhat misleading. Over the first 3 months, the ratings generally improved, but there was no more significant improvement at 6 months. In our judgment, ChatGPT provided unexpectedly good responses, given that the questions were quite specific. Although no potentially harmful errors were identified, some mistakes could be seen as somewhat misleading. Free-text analysis using machine learning (ML)-based natural language processing (NLP) shows promise for diagnosing psychiatric conditions. Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) has demonstrated preliminary initial feasibility for this purpose; however, whether it can accurately assess mental illness remains to be determined. This study evaluates the effectiveness of ChatGPT and the text-embedding-ada-002 (ADA) model in detecting post-traumatic stress disorder following childbirth (CB-PTSD), a maternal postpartum mental illness affecting millions of women annually, with no standard screening protocol. Using a sample of 1295 women who gave birth in the last six months and were 18+ years old, recruited through hospital announcements, social media, and professional organizations, we explore ChatGPT's and ADA's potential to screen for CB-PTSD by analyzing maternal childbirth narratives. The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5; cutoff 31) was used to assess CB-PTSD. By developing an ML model that utilizes numerical vector representation of the ADA model, we identify CB-PTSD via narrative classification. Our model outperformed (F1 score: 0.81) ChatGPT and six previously published large text-embedding models trained on mental health or clinical domains data, suggesting that the ADA model can be harnessed to identify CB-PTSD. Background: AI in healthcare services is advancing every day, with a focus on uprising cognitive capabilities. Higher cognitive functions in AI entail performing intricate processes like decision-making, problem-solving, perception, and reasoning. This advanced cognition surpasses basic data handling, encompassing skills to grasp ideas, understand and apply information contextually, and derive novel insights from previous experiences and acquired knowledge. ChatGPT, a natural language processing model, exemplifies this evolution by engaging in conversations with humans, furnishing responses to inquiries. Objective: We aimed to understand the capability of ChatGPT in solving doubts pertaining to symptoms and histological features related to subject of oral pathology. The study's objective is to evaluate ChatGPT's effectiveness in answering questions pertaining to diagnoses. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done using an AI-based ChatGPT application that provides free service for research and learning purposes. The current version of ChatGPT3.5 was used to obtain responses for a total of 25 queries. These randomly asked questions were based on basic queries from patient aspect and early oral histopathologists. These responses were obtained and stored for further processing. The responses were evaluated by five experienced pathologists on a four point liekart scale. The score were further subjected for deducing kappa values for reliability. Result & Statistical Analysis: A total of 25 queries were solved by the program in the shortest possible time for an answer. The sensitivity and specificity of the methods and the responses were represented using frequency and percentages. Both the responses were analysed and were statistically significant based on the measurement of kappa values. Conclusion: The proficiency of ChatGPT in handling intricate reasoning queries within pathology demonstrated a noteworthy level of relational accuracy. Consequently, its text output created coherent links between elements, producing meaningful responses. This suggests that scholars or students can rely on this program to address reasoning-based inquiries. Explainability and Safety engender trust. These require a model to exhibit consistency and reliability. To achieve these, it is necessary to use and analyze data and knowledge with statistical and symbolic AI methods relevant to the AI application––neither alone will do. Consequently, we argue and seek to demonstrate that the NeuroSymbolic AI approach is better suited for making AI a trusted AI system. We present the CREST framework that shows how Consistency, Reliability, user‐level Explainability, and Safety are built on NeuroSymbolic methods that use data and knowledge to support requirements for critical applications such as health and well‐being. This article focuses on Large Language Models (LLMs) as the chosen AI system within the CREST framework. LLMs have garnered substantial attention from researchers due to their versatility in handling a broad array of natural language processing (NLP) scenarios. As examples, ChatGPT and Google's MedPaLM have emerged as highly promising platforms for providing information in general and health‐related queries, respectively. Nevertheless, these models remain black boxes despite incorporating human feedback and instruction‐guided tuning. For instance, ChatGPT can generate unsafe responses despite instituting safety guardrails. With the advent of large language models (LLMs), the artificial intelligence revolution in medicine and radiology is now more tangible than ever. Every day, an increasingly large number of articles are published that utilize LLMs in radiology. To adopt and safely implement this new technology in the field, radiologists should be familiar with its key concepts, understand at least the technical basics, and be aware of the potential risks and ethical considerations that come with it. In this review article, the authors provide an overview of the LLMs that might be relevant to the radiology community and include a brief discussion of their short history, technical basics, ChatGPT, prompt engineering, potential applications in medicine and radiology, advantages, disadvantages and risks, ethical and regulatory considerations, and future directions. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a transformative technology with many benefits, but also risks when applied to healthcare and cardiac surgery in particular. Surgeons must be aware of AI and its application through generative pre-trained transformers (GPT/ChatGPT) to fully understand what this offers to clinical care, decision making, training, research and education. Clinicians must appreciate that the advantages and potential for transformative change in practice is balanced by risks typified by validation, ethical challenges and medicolegal concerns. ChatGPT should be seen as a tool to support and enhance the skills of surgeons, rather than a replacement for their experience and judgment. Human oversight and intervention will always be necessary to ensure patient safety and to make complex decisions that may require a refined understanding of individual patient circumstances. Background: Large language models like ChatGPT have revolutionized the field of natural language processing with their capability to comprehend and generate textual content, showing great potential to play a role in medical education. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate and comprehensively analysis the performance of ChatGPT on three types of national medical examinations in China, including National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE), National Pharmacist Licensing Examination (NPLE), and National Nurse Licensing Examination (NNLE). Methods: We collected questions from Chinese NMLE, NPLE and NNLE from year 2017 to 2021. In NMLE and NPLE, each exam consists of 4 units, while in NNLE, each exam consists of 2 units. The questions with figures, tables or chemical structure were manually identified and excluded by clinician. We applied direct instruction strategy via multiple prompts to force ChatGPT to generate the clear answer with the capability to distinguish between single-choice and multiple-choice questions. Results: ChatGPT failed to pass the accuracy threshold of 0.6 in any of the three types of examinations over the five years. Specifically, in the NMLE, the highest recorded accuracy was 0.5467, which was attained in both 2018 and 2021. In the NPLE, the highest accuracy was 0.5599 in 2017. In the NNLE, the most impressive result was shown in 2017, with an accuracy of 0.5897, which is also the highest accuracy in our entire evaluation. ChatGPT's performance showed no significant difference in different units, but significant difference in different question types. ChatGPT performed well in a range of subject areas, including clinical epidemiology, human parasitology, and dermatology, as well as in various medical topics such as molecules, health management and prevention, diagnosis and screening. Conclusions: These results indicate ChatGPT failed the NMLE, NPLE and NNLE in China, spanning from year 2017 to 2021. but show great potential of large language models in medical education. BackgroundNatural language processing tools are becoming increasingly adopted in multiple industries worldwide. They have shown promising results however their use in the field of surgery is under-recognised. Many trials have assessed these benefits in small settings with promising results before large scale adoption can be considered in surgery. This study aims to review the current research and insights into the potential for implementation of natural language processing tools into surgery.MethodsA narrative review was conducted following a computer-assisted literature search on Medline, EMBASE and Google Scholar databases. Papers related to natural language processing tools and consideration into their use for surgery were considered.ResultsCurrent applications of natural language processing tools within surgery are limited. From the literature, there is evidence of potential improvement in surgical capability and service delivery, such as through the use of these technologies to streamline processes including surgical triaging, data collection and auditing, surgical communication and documentation. Additionally, there is potential to extend these capabilities to surgical academia to improve processes in surgical research and allow innovation in the development of educational resources. Despite these outcomes, the evidence to support these findings are challenged by small sample sizes with limited applicability to broader settings.ConclusionWith the increasing adoption of natural language processing technology, such as in popular forms like ChatGPT, there has been increasing research in the use of these tools within surgery to improve surgical workflow and efficiency. This review highlights multifaceted applications of natural language processing within surgery, albeit with clear limitations due to the infancy of the infrastructure available to leverage these technologies. There remains room for more rigorous research into broader capability of natural language processing technology within the field of surgery and the need for cross-sectoral collaboration to understand the ways in which these algorithms can best be integrated.

Background: GPT-4-based ChatGPT demonstrates significant potential in various industries; however, its potential clinical applications remain largely unexplored. Methods: We employed the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) quiz "Image Challenge" from October 2021 to March 2023 to assess ChatGPT's clinical capabilities. The quiz, designed for healthcare professionals, tests the ability to analyze clinical scenarios and make appropriate decisions. We evaluated ChatGPT's performance on the NEJM quiz, analyzing its accuracy rate by questioning type and specialty after excluding quizzes which were impossible to answer without images. ChatGPT was first asked to answer without the five multiple-choice options, and then after being given the options. Results: ChatGPT achieved an 87% (54/62) accuracy without choices and a 97% (60/62) accuracy with choices, after excluding 16 image-based quizzes. Upon analyzing performance by quiz type, ChatGPT excelled in the Diagnosis category, attaining 89% (49/55) accuracy without choices and 98% (54/55) with choices. Although other categories featured fewer cases, ChatGPT's performance remained consistent. It demonstrated strong performance across the majority of medical specialties; however, Genetics had the lowest accuracy at 67% (2/3). Conclusion: ChatGPT demonstrates potential for diagnostic applications, suggesting its usefulness in supporting healthcare professionals in making differential diagnoses and enhancing AI-driven healthcare.
