Prefabricated temporary buildings are a promising solution for post-disaster scenarios for their modularity, sustainability and transportation advantages. However, their low thermal mass building envelope shows a fast response to heat flux excitations. This leads to the risk of not meeting the occupant comfort and HVAC energy-saving requirements. The literature shows different measures implementable in opaque surfaces, like vacuum insulation panels (VIPs), phase change materials (PCMs) and switchable coatings, and in transparent surfaces (switchable glazing) to mitigate thermal issues, like overheating, while preserving the limited available internal space. This paper investigates the energy and overheating performance of the mentioned interventions by using building performance simulation tools to assess their effectiveness. The optimization also looks at the transportation flexibility of each intervention to better support the decision maker for manufacturing innovative temporary units. The most energy-efficient measures turn to be VIPs as a better energy solution for winter and PCMs as a better thermal comfort solution for summer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forecasts and their corresponding optimized operation plans for energy plants never match perfectly, especially if they have a horizon of several days. In this paper, we suggest a concept to cope with uncertain load forecasts by reserving a share of the energy storage system for short-term balancing. Depending on the amount of uncertainty in the load forecasts, we schedule the energy system with a specific reduced storage capacity at the day-ahead market. For the day of delivery, we examine the optimal thresholds when the remaining capacity should be used to balance differences between forecast and reality at the intraday market. With the help of a case study for a simple sector-coupled energy system with a demand for cooling, it is shown that the energy costs could be reduced by up to 10% using the optimal reserve share. The optimal reserve share depends on the forecast quality and the time series of loads and prices. Generally, the trends and qualitative results can be transferred to other systems. The paper addresses challenges arising from the unpredictable and probabilistic nature of wind speed and solar irradiance, leading to variable power production in renewable sources. Power imbalance issues in grids result from the difficulty in accurately estimating these variables. The study introduces an improved data-driven uncertainty set, utilizing a neural network trained with extensive historical data from a multi-microgrid system. This set efficiently identifies strong coupling and extracts characteristic scenarios, ensuring high reliability with a minimal number of scenes. The proposed probabilistic model, implemented in the coordination of pumped storage, wind, and solar power plants, incorporates energy limits and storage characteristics. A four-mode IEEE model for storage units allows quick response to system needs. Simulating storage unit states every hour, considering system load, output power, and energy limitations, optimizes power dispatch based on battery capacity. Additionally, the paper addresses the uncertainty in electric power demand in microgrids, proposing an improved data-driven uncertainty set obtained from a neural network. By eliminating unrealistic worst-case scenarios, the approach accurately captures system characteristics, maintaining high reliability while significantly reducing convergence time. The proposed uncertainty set is applied in a novel two-stage robust optimization dispatch model, transforming the optimization problem into a mixed-integer linear programming problem, and solving it using a column and constraint generation algorithm. Numerical case studies verify the feasibility and superiority of the proposed approach in terms of economy and convergence performance compared to existing robust optimization methods. As the building stock is projected to double before the end of the half-century and the power grid is transitions to low-carbon resources, planning new construction hand in hand with the grid and its capacity is essential. This paper presents a method that combines urban building energy modeling and local planning of renewable energy sources (RES) using an optimization framework. The objective of this model is to minimize the investment and operational cost of meeting the energy needs of a group of buildings. The framework considers two urban-scale RES technologies, photovoltaic (PV) panels and small-scale wind turbines, alongside energy storage system (ESS) units that complement building demand in case of RES unavailability. The urban buildings are modeled abstractly as "shoeboxes" using the Urban Modeling Interface (umi) software. We tested the proposed framework on a real case study in a neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The results include estimated building energy consumption, optimal capacity of the installed power supply resources, hourly operations, and corresponding energy costs for 2030. We also imposed different levels of CO2 emissions cuts. The results demonstrate that solar PV has the most prominent role in supplying local renewables to the neighborhood, with wind power making only a small contribution. Moreover, as we imposed different CO2 emissions caps, we found that ESS plays an increasingly important role at lower CO2 emissions levels. We can achieve a significant reduction in CO2 emissions with a limited increase in cost (75% emissions reduction at a 15% increase in overall energy costs). The global population is rapidly increasing, and the urban population is on an even faster trend; therefore, the population density is expected to rise. As the number of people in cities grows, the demand for high-rise buildings is anticipated to increase to address the problem of limited land resources. Therefore, efficient energy management using distributed resources has become increasingly important. Elevators are a vital vertical means of transportation in high-rise buildings, and reducing the weight of their components can lead to favorable conditions for energy utilization and increased speed. Therefore, this study presents an elevator system that supplies power inside an elevator car by eliminating the traveling cable and applying a small-capacity energy storage system (ESS). Additionally, we propose a charging algorithm suitable for the proposed system. Generally, batteries have sensitive electrical properties among the distributed energy resources (DERs). Therefore, controlling the stable maintenance of the transient state of the charging current—even when the DC power is unstable or the load changes rapidly in a system requiring fast charging—is crucial. Owing to the nature of the elevator system to be applied, discontinuous charging is frequent, and the active and efficient management of the battery state of charge (SOC) may be challenging. In addition, since it is necessary to be able to charge as much as possible during a short discontinuous charging time, a current control algorithm with a stable and high-speed response is required. The proposed transient high-speed tracking controller (THSTC) is a method for tracking the time of applying an inductor's excitation voltage without pulse–width modulation (PWM) switching, which is less sensitive to the controller gain values and has fast responsiveness as well as stable transient response characteristics. The proposed method has good dynamic characteristics with a simple control structure without a complex design, which is useful for systems with repeated discontinuous charging.
