Objective: Air pollution has been linked to multiple psychiatric disorders, but little is known on its long-term association with schizophrenia. The interaction between air pollution and genetic susceptibility on incident schizophrenia has never been reported. We aimed to explore the associations between long-term air pollution exposure and late-onset schizophrenia and evaluate whether genetic susceptibility could modify the association., Methods: This population-based prospective cohort study included 437,802 middle-aged and elderly individuals free of schizophrenia at baseline in the UK Biobank. Land use regression models were applied in the estimation of the annual average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), and inhalable particulate matter (PM 10 ) at residence. The associations between air pollutants and schizophrenia were evaluated by using Cox proportional hazard models. A polygenic risk score of schizophrenia was constructed for exploring potential interaction of air pollutants with genetic susceptibility., Results: An interquartile range increase in PM 2.5 , PM 10 , NO 2 , and NO x was associated with the hazard ratios (HR) for incident schizophrenia at 1.19, 1.16, 1.22, and 1.09, respectively. The exposure-response curves for the association of air pollution with incident schizophrenia were approximately linear. There are additive interactions of air pollution score (APS), PM 10 , NO 2 , and NO x with genetic risk. Specifically, compared with participants with low genetic susceptibility and low APS, the HR was 3.23 for individuals with high genetic risk and high APS, among which 0.49 excess risk could be attributed to the additive interaction, accounting for 15 % of the schizophrenia risk., Conclusion: This large-scale, prospective cohort study conveys the first-hand evidence that long-term air pollution exposure could elevate schizophrenia incidence in later life, especially for individuals with higher genetic risks. Background: Previous observational studies have indicated associations of physical activity (PA) and air pollution with mortality. A few studies have evaluated air pollution and PA interactions for health. Still, the trade-off between the harmful effects of air pollution exposure and the protective effects of PA remains controversial and unclear., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the joint association of air pollution and PA with mortality risks., Methods: This prospective cohort study included 322,092 participants from 2006 to 2010 and followed up to 2021 in the UK Biobank study. The concentrations of air pollutants (2006-2010), including particulate matter (PM) with diameters <=2.5 mm (PM 2.5 ), <=10 mm (PM 10 ), and between 2.5 and 10 mm (PM 2.5-10 ), and nitrogen oxides (NO 2 and NO x ) were obtained. Information on PA measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire short form (2006-2010) and wrist-worn accelerometer (2013-2015) were collected. All-cause and cause-specific mortalities were recorded. Cox proportional hazard models were used to investigate the associations of air pollution exposure and PA with mortality risks. The additive and multiplicative interactions were also examined., Results: During a mean follow-up of 11.83 years, 16629 deaths were recorded. Compared with participants reporting low PA, higher PA was negatively associated with all-cause [hazard ratio (HR), 0.74; 95% CI, 0.71-0.78], cancer (HR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.80-0.90), CVD (HR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.71-0.87), and respiratory disease-specific mortality (HR, 0.51; 95% CI, 0.44-0.60). Exposure to PM 2.5 (HR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.00-1.09) and NO x (HR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02-1.10) was connected with increased all-cause mortality risk, and significant PM 2.5 -associated elevated risks for CVD mortality and NO x -associated elevated risks for respiratory disease mortality were observed. No obvious interaction between PA and PM 2.5 or NO x exposure was detected., Conclusions: Our study provides additional evidence that higher PA and lower air pollutant levels are independently connected with reduced mortality risk. The benefits of PA are not significantly affected by long-term air pollution exposure, indicating PA can be recommended to prevent mortality regardless of air pollution levels. Our findings highlight the importance of public health policies and interventions facilitating PA and reducing air pollution in reducing mortality risks and maximizing health benefits. Background: Long-term air pollution exposure is a major health concern, yet its associations with thyroid dysfunction (hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism) and biological aging remain unclear. We aimed to determine the association of long-term air pollution exposure with thyroid dysfunction and to investigate the potential roles of biological aging., Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted on 432,340 participants with available data on air pollutants including particulate matter (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and PM 2.5-10 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), and nitric oxide (NO) from the UK Biobank. An air pollution score was calculated using principal component analysis to reflect joint exposure to these pollutants. Biological aging was assessed using the Klemera-Doubal method biological age and the phenotypic age algorithms. The associations of individual and joint air pollutants with thyroid dysfunction were estimated using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. The roles of biological aging were explored using interaction and mediation analyses., Results: During a median follow-up of 12.41 years, 1,721 (0.40 %) and 9,296 (2.15 %) participants developed hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, respectively. All air pollutants were observed to be significantly associated with an increased risk of incident hypothyroidism, while PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and NO 2 were observed to be significantly associated with an increased risk of incident hyperthyroidism. The hazard ratios (HRs) for hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism were 1.15 (95 % confidence interval: 1.00-1.32) and 1.15 (1.08-1.22) for individuals in the highest quartile compared with those in the lowest quartile of air pollution score, respectively. Additionally, we noticed that individuals with higher pollutant levels and biologically older generally had a higher risk of incident thyroid dysfunction. Background: Limited research has been conducted on the association between long-term exposure to air pollutants and the incidence of gout., Objectives: This study aims to assess the individual and combined effects of prolonged exposure to five air pollutants (NO 2 , NO x , PM 10 , PM coarse and PM 2.5 2 ) on the incidence of gout among 458,884 initially gout-free participants enrolled in the UK Biobank., Methods: Employing a land use regression model, we utilized an estimation method to ascertain the annual concentrations of the five air pollutants. Subsequently, we devised a weighted air pollution score to facilitate a comprehensive evaluation of exposure. The Cox proportional hazards model was utilized to investigate the association between ambient air pollution and gout risk. Interaction and stratification analyses were conducted to evaluate age, sex, BMI, and genetic predisposition as potential effect modifiers in the air pollution-gout relationship. Furthermore, mediation analyses were conducted to explore the potential involvement of biomarkers in mediating the association between air pollution and gout., Results: Over a median follow-up time of 12.0 years, 7,927 cases of gout were diagnosed. Significant associations were observed between the risk of gout and a per IQR increase in NO 2 (HR 3 : 1.05, 95 % CI 4 : 1.02-1.08, p = 0.003), NO x (HR: 1.04, 95 % CI: 1.01-1.06, p = 0.003), and PM 2.5 (HR: 1.03, 95 % CI: 1.00-1.06, p = 0.030). Per IQR increase in the air pollution score was associated with an elevated risk of gout (p = 0.005). Stratified analysis revealed a significant correlation between the air pollution score and gout risk in participants ≥60 years (HR: 1.05, 95 % CI: 1.02-1.09, p = 0.005), but not in those <60 years (p = 0.793), indicating a significant interaction effect with age (p-interaction=0.009). Mediation analyses identified five serum biomarkers (SUA:15.87 %, VITD: 5.04 %, LDLD: 3.34 %, GGT: 1.90 %, AST: 1.56 % 5 ) with potential mediation effects on this association., Conclusions: Long-term exposure to air pollutants, particularly among the elderly population, is associated with an increased risk of gout. Concentrations of particulate matter (PM 10 , PM 2.5 ), ultrafine (UFP), particle number (PNC), black carbon (BC), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and nitrogen oxides (NO X ) were measured in train carriages on diesel and bi-mode trains on inter-city and long-distance journeys in the United Kingdom (UK) using a high-quality mobile measurement system. Air quality on 15 different routes was measured using highly-time resolved data on a total of 119 journeys during three campaigns in winter 2020 and summer 2021; this included 13 different train classes. Each journey was sampled 4-10 times with approximatively 11,000 min of in-train concentrations in total. Mean-journey concentrations were 7.552 µg m -3 (PM 10 ); 3.936 µg m -3 (PM 2.5 ); 333-11,300 # cm -3 (PNC); 225-9,131 # cm -3 (UFP); 0.6-11 µg m -3 (BC); 28-201 µg m -3 (NO 2 ); and 130-3,456 µg m -3 (NO X ). The impact of different factors on in-train concentrations was evaluated. The presence of tunnels was the factor with the largest impact on the in-train particle concentrations with enhancements by a factor of 40 greater than baseline for BC, and a factor 6 to 7 for PM and PNC. The engine fuel mode was the factor with the largest impact on NO 2 with enhancements of up to 14-times larger when the train run on diesel compared to the times running on electric on hybrid trains. Train classes with an age < 10 years observed the lowest in-train PM, BC and NO X concentrations reflecting improvements in aspects of rail technology in recent years. Air quality on UK diesel trains is higher than ambient concentrations but has lower PM 2.5 and PNC than most other transport modes, including subway systems, diesel and petrol cars. Background: The association between air quality and risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection is poorly understood. We investigated this association using serological individual-level data adjusting for a wide range of confounders, in a large population-based cohort (COVIDENCE UK)., Methods: We assessed the associations between long-term (2015-19) nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ), exposures with SARS-CoV-2 infection, level of antibody response among those infected, and COVID-19 disease severity. We used serological data from 10,489 participants in the COVIDENCE UK cohort, and estimated annual average air pollution exposure at each participant's home postcode., Results: After controlling for potential confounders, we found a positive association between 5-year NO 2 and PM 2.5 exposures and the risk of seropositivity: 10 unit increase in NO 2 (μg/m 3 ) was associated with an increasing risk of seropositivity by 1.092 (95% CI 1.02 to 1.17; p-for-trend 0.012). For PM 2.5 , 10 unit increase (μg/m 3 ) was associated with an increasing risk of seropositivity by 1.65 (95% CI 1.015-2.68; p-for-trend 0·049). In addition, we found that NO 2 was positively associated with higher antibody titres (p-for-trend 0·013) among seropositive participants, with no evidence of an association for PM 2.5 ., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the long-term burden of air pollution increased the risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection and has important implications for future pandemic preparedness. This study addressed the scarcity of NH 3 measurements in urban Europe and the diverse monitoring protocols, hindering direct data comparison. Sixty-nine datasets from Finland, France, Italy, Spain, and the UK across various site types, including industrial (IND, 8), traffic (TR, 12), urban (UB, 22), suburban (SUB, 12), and regional background (RB, 15), are analyzed to this study. Among these, 26 sites provided 5, or more, years of data for time series analysis. Despite varied protocols, necessitating future harmonization, the average NH 3 concentration across sites reached 8.0 ± 8.9 μg/m 3 . Excluding farming/agricultural hotspots (FAHs), IND and TR sites had the highest concentrations (4.7 ± 3.2 and 4.5 ± 1.0 μg/m 3 ), followed by UB, SUB, and RB sites (3.3 ± 1.5, 2.7 ± 1.3, and 1.0 ± 0.3 μg/m 3 , respectively) indicating that industrial, traffic, and other urban sources were primary contributors to NH 3 outside FAH regions. When referring exclusively to the FAHs, concentrations ranged from 10.0 ± 2.3 to 15.6 ± 17.2 μg/m 3 , with the highest concentrations being reached in RB sites close to the farming and agricultural sources, and that, on average for FAHs there is a decreasing NH 3 concentration gradient towards the city. Time trends showed that over half of the sites (18/26) observed statistically significant trends. Approximately 50 % of UB and TR sites showed a decreasing trend, while 30 % an increasing one. Meta-analysis revealed a small insignificant decreasing trend for non-FAH RB sites. In FAHs, there was a significant upward trend at a rate of 3.51[0.45,6.57]%/yr. Seasonal patterns of NH 3 concentrations varied, with urban areas experiencing fluctuations influenced by surrounding emissions, particularly in FAHs. Diel variation showed differing patterns at urban monitoring sites, all with higher daytime concentrations, but with variations in peak times depending on major emission sources and meteorological patterns. In times of growing concern about the impacts of air pollution across the globe, lower-cost sensor technology is giving the first steps in helping to enhance our understanding and ability to manage air quality issues, particularly in regions without established monitoring networks. While the benefits of greater spatial coverage and real-time measurements that these systems offer are evident, challenges still need to be addressed regarding sensor reliability and data quality. Given the limitations imposed by intellectual property, commercial implementations are often "black boxes", which represents an extra challenge as it limits end users' understanding of the data production process. In this paper we present an overview of the QUANT (Quantification of Utility of Atmospheric Network Technologies) study, a comprehensive 3-year assessment across a range of urban environments in the United Kingdom, evaluating 43 sensor devices, including 119 gas sensors and 118 particulate matter (PM) sensors, from multiple companies. QUANT stands out as one of the most comprehensive studies of commercial air quality sensor systems carried out to date, encompassing a wide variety of companies in a single evaluation and including two generations of sensor technologies. Integrated into an extensive dataset open to the public, it was designed to provide a long-term evaluation of the precision, accuracy and stability of commercially available sensor systems. To attain a nuanced understanding of sensor performance, we have complemented commonly used single-value metrics (e.g. coefficient of determination, R2 ; root mean square error, RMSE; mean absolute error, MAE) with visual tools. These include regression plots, relative expanded uncertainty (REU) plots and target plots, enhancing our analysis beyond traditional metrics. This overview discusses the assessment methodology and key findings showcasing the significance of the study. While more comprehensive analyses are reserved for future detailed publications, the results shown here highlight the significant variation between systems, the incidence of corrections made by manufacturers, the effects of relocation to different environments and the long-term behaviour of the systems. Additionally, the importance of accounting for uncertainties associated with reference instruments in sensor evaluations is emphasised. Practical considerations in the application of these sensors in real-world scenarios are also discussed, and potential solutions to end-user data challenges are presented. Offering key information about the sensor systems' capabilities, the QUANT study will serve as a valuable resource for those seeking to implement commercial solutions as complementary tools to tackle air pollution. The spatially misaligned data problem occurs when data at different spatial scales need to be combined. Bayesian hierarchical models such as melding and downscaler approaches are suitable to solve this problem but their application is limited when MCMC is used for inference due to the high computational cost. The use of INLA and SPDE represents an alternative to MCMC for Bayesian inference that enables faster inference for latent Gaussian models. In this paper, we describe how INLA and SPDE can be adapted to fit Bayesian melding and downscaler models to combine spatially misaligned data. We assess the performance of the models using simulated and real data in a range of scenarios and sampling strategies and compare the suitability of the models in each situation. We also show how to obtain fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) predictions in the UK at a continuous surface and at policy-relevant spatial scales by combining spatially misaligned monitoring station data, satellite-derived indicators, road information, and environmental factors. The seasonal characteristics of air pollutant concentrations are important for understanding variations in emissions released into the air and in atmospheric chemistry. The patterns seen can be influenced by anthropogenic emissions, meteorological conditions, and the transport of pollutants over long and short distances. Whilst seasonality is well understood for some pollutants such as ozone and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, it is poorly understood and under-investigated for heavy metals in particulate matter (PM). This work studies long-term datasets of heavy metals in PM from a relevant UK air quality monitoring network, demonstrating the seasonal characteristics of the concentrations of these metals for the first time. Surprisingly, both 'high in winter–low in summer' and 'low in winter–high in summer' seasonality was observed, with some metals showing little or no seasonality. The 'high in winter–low in summer' seasonality (particularly for As) is attributable to the dominant contribution being from local primary sources, such as burning process producing larger PM sizes. The 'low in winter–high in summer' seasonality (particularly for V) is attributable to weak or non-seasonal local sources being dominated by contributions from medium and long-range transport during the summer months, when pollutant transport is more efficient. The findings contribute significantly to our understanding of the seasonality of metals in PM concentrations and the role played by the long-range transport of pollutants. Conclusions are also drawn about the implications for the calculation of annual averages on compliance-based air quality networks if data from a time series of a pollutant that displays seasonal characteristics are missing. The long-term field experiments at Rothamsted in south-east England (UK) are an important resource that has been used extensively to study the effects of land management, atmospheric pollution and climate change on soil fertility and the sustainability of crop yields. However, for these and other long-term experiments around the world to remain useful, changes are sometimes needed. These changes may be required to ensure that the experiment is not compromised by e.g. acidification or weeds, but often they are needed to ensure that the experiment remains relevant to current agricultural practice, e.g. the introduction of new cultivars and the judicious use of pesticides. However, changes should not be made just for the sake of change or to investigate aspects of management that could be better resolved in a short-term experiment. Rather, modifications should only be made after carefully considered discussion, involving scientists from different disciplines. It must be remembered however that there are limitations to what can be achieved in one experiment. In this paper we give examples of why certain changes were made to the Rothamsted experiments and what the results of those changes have been. We also highlight the value of archiving crop and soil samples for future studies. • The management of Rothamsted's long-term experiments (LTEs) is discussed. • The effects of that management on soil fertility and crop yields are considered. • The need for changes to LTEs to ensure their continued relevance is emphasised. • Reasons for changes to Rothamsted's LTEs and the results of those changes are given. • The value of archived soil and crop samples is highlighted. Presently, there is growing discourse surrounding climate change, global warming, and the possibility of urban smog. Daily, we encounter air pollutants unwittingly, often oblivious to the substantial adverse impacts they may impart on our health. This manuscript furnishes a thorough examination of the shifts in the concentrations of distinct air pollutants, namely, sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10, within the contexts of the United Kingdom (a country progressively transitioning to alternative energy sources) and Poland (a country in the EU with the second lowest climate policy evaluation in the climate change performance index or CCPI) from 1970 to 2020. This comparative study between the two countries clearly showed the importance of the transition to clean energy sources. The UK's efforts towards cleaner energy sources have led to reduced emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter. In contrast, Poland's heavy dependence on energy primarily from coal over the years has resulted in elevated pollution levels, notably in the concentration of pollutants such as particulate matter. This study also revealed that changes in emissions predominantly stem from technological advancements and economic activities. Additionally, political regulations and the gradual phase-out of specific fuels or energy-rich substances and their substitution with alternative energy sources have also imparted considerable influence. There is evidence that hypertensive heart disease is attributed to environmental noise and air pollution in European regions. Epidemiological studies have also demonstrated the potential role of road traffic air–noise pollution in adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension. Despite the local implementation of the EU Directive on environmental noise and air quality, it is necessary to explore the progress and understand the impact of policy, legislation and the collection of exposure and associated health data for air and noise pollution in order to improve environmental public health. Therefore, the DPSEEA (Driving force, Pressure, State, Exposure, Effect and Action) conceptual framework model was used to systematically map and review these links and to identify relevant indicators linking air–noise pollution with cardiovascular diseases. With a focus on the EU and specifically UK situation, we critically evaluate the effectiveness of evidence-based policy implementation of action plans, summarizing existing data using modified framework model tools. We concluded that, the DPSEEA conceptual framework provides an effective review method to more effectively, conduct data surveillance monitoring and assessment, and tracking outcomes with different types of evidence in the field of environmental public health. There is great scope demonstrating the use of the DPSEEA conceptual framework to highlight the casual relationship between exposure and effects taking into account other factors such as driving force, pressure, state, exposure and action and to incorporate as surveillance information in the environmental health tracking system (EHTS). Background: Long-term exposure to air pollution has been found to contribute to the development of cognitive decline. Our study aimed to assess the association between various air pollutants and cognitive impairment and dementia. Additionally, explore the modification effects of lifestyle and genetic predisposition. Methods: The exposure levels to various air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM) with diameters ≤ 2.5 (PM2.5), ≤ 10 (PM10), and between 2.5 and 10 μm (PM2.5−10) and nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) were identified. An air pollution score (APS) was calculated to evaluate the combined exposure to these five air pollutants. A genetic risk estimate and healthy lifestyle score (HLS) were also generated. The Cox regression model adjusted by potential confounders was adopted to access the association between pollution exposure and cognitive decline, and several sensitivity analyses were additionally conducted to test the robustness. Results: The combined exposure to air pollutants was associated with an increased risk of incident cognitive decline. Compared with the low exposure group, the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's dementia, vascular dementia, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in those exposed to the highest levels of air pollutants were respectively 1.07 (95% CI: 1.04 to 1.09), 1.08 (95% CI: 1.04 to 1.12), 1.07 (95% CI: 1.02 to 1.13), and 1.19 (95% CI: 1.12 to 1.27). However, the modification effects from genetic predisposition were not widely observed, while on the contrary for the healthy lifestyle. Our findings were proven to be reliable and robust based on the results of sensitivity analyses. Conclusions: Exposure to air pollution was found to be a significant contributing factor to cognitive impairment and dementia, and this association was not easily modified by an individual's genetic predisposition. The Industrial Revolution, which took place from the late 18th to the mid-19th century, had a profound impact on society. It leads to unprecedented economic and technological progress, as well as significant changes in the social structure. Along with the positives, there are quite a few negative effects. The purpose of this article is to present the basics, such as exploitation of workers, poor working conditions, child labor, poor physical and mental condition of the population, urbanization, environmental pollution, etc. As Great Britain began its industrialization before all other countries, therefore its citizens were exposed to the negative effects for the longest time, the data and sources used are mainly from the United Kingdom. A descriptive method is used, presenting both contemporary sources and those from the time of the industrial revolution itself, specifically Adam Smith and Thomas Malthus. The information collected is interpreted by analyzing the negative social consequences of industrialization. Although usually distinguished, in practice these effects are closely related. For example, poor working conditions and long working hours, combined with environmental pollution, lead to a deterioration in the health of the working class. Due to the intensive burning of fossil fuels, air pollution in industrial cities during the period was many times higher than modern standards. Along with the negative effects of industrialization itself, the uneven distribution of wealth is increasing. All this leads to social unrest, protests and movements for workers' rights, which shows the clear need for social reforms. It was the emergence of the first trade unions and the formation of labor movements that were a response to the exploitation and poor conditions faced by workers during this time. As a positive side, if it can be called so, of the negative effects of industrialization, the political impetus for the development of the first systems of social security, education and health care was formed towards the end of the 19th century. A change in public attitudes brought about by the negative effects of industrialization reflected a growing recognition of the need to move away from the early laissez-faire approach and provide greater social security for wage workers on the part of the state.
