The exploration into nanomaterial-based nonenzymatic biosensors with superb performance in terms of good sensitivity and anti-interference ability in disease marker monitoring has always attained undoubted priority in sensing systems. In this work, we report the design and synthesis of a highly active nanocatalyst, i.e., palladium and platinum nanoparticles (Pt&Pd-NPs) decorated ultrathin nanoporous gold (NPG) film, which is modified on a homemade graphene paper (GP) to develop a high-performance freestanding and flexible nanohybrid electrode. Owing to the structural characteristics the robust GP electrode substrate, and high electrochemically catalytic activities and durability of the permeable NPG support and ultrafine and high-density Pt&Pd-NPs on it, the resultant Pt&Pd-NPs–NPG/GP electrode exhibits excellent sensing performance of low detection limitation, high sensitivity and anti-interference capability, good reproducibility and long-term stability for the detection of small molecular biomarkers hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose (Glu), and has been applied to the monitoring of H2O2 in different types of live cells and Glu in body fluids such as urine and fingertip blood, which is of great significance for the clinical diagnosis and prognosis in point-of-care testing. Trace-level detection of Dopamine (DA) in human body fluids is crucial for diagnosing neurological disorders, understanding mental health, and advancing drug discovery, but found challenging with rapid and low-cost detection technologies. Herein, an innovative paper-based photochemical method has been developed for the detection of DA using triangular silver nanoprism (AgNPrs), as an optical nanoprobe, in human blood plasma and urine samples. Frequent oceanic oil spill incidents and the discharge of industrial oily wastewaters have caused serious threats to environments, food chains and human beings. Lignin wastes with many reactive groups exist as the byproducts from bioethanol and pulping processing industries, and they are either discarded as wastes or directly consumed as a fuel. To make full use of lignin wastes and simultaneously deal with oily wastewaters, porous lignin-based composites have been rationally designed and prepared. In this review, recent advances in the preparation of porous lignin-based composites are summarized in terms of aerogels, sponges, foams, papers, and membranes, respectively. Then, the mechanisms and the application of porous lignin-based adsorbents and filtration materials for oil/water separation are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of porous lignin-based composites are proposed in the field of oil/water separation. The utilization of abundant lignin wastes can replace fossil resources, and meanwhile porous lignin-based composites can be used to efficiently treat with oily wastewaters. A well-developed-multiwall carbon nanotube (f-MWCNT)/biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) composites were synthesized using ultrasonication method for orthopedic implantation applications. The formation of composites and its phase was confirmed by using X-ray diffraction. The presence of various functional groups was identified by using Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The presence of f-MWCNT was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) analysis revealed that BCP units were bound by the surface of f-MWCNTs. The synthesized composites were coated on medical grade 316L stainless steel substrates using electro deposition technique. To determine its corrosion resistance characteristics, the developed substrates were exposed to a simulated bodily fluid (SBF) solution for 0, 4, and 7 days. Sweat, commonly referred to as the ultrafiltrate of blood plasma, is an essential physiological fluid in the human body. It contains a wide range of metabolites, electrolytes, and other biologically significant markers that are closely linked to human health. Compared to other bodily fluids, such as blood, sweat offers distinct advantages in terms of ease of collection and non-invasive detection. In recent years, considerable attention has been focused on wearable sweat sensors due to their potential for continuous monitoring of biomarkers. Electrochemical methods have been extensively used for in situ sweat biomarker analysis, as thoroughly reviewed by various researchers. This comprehensive review aims to provide an overview of recent advances in non-electrochemical methods for analyzing sweat, including colorimetric methods, fluorescence techniques, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and more. Wearable devices are gaining popularity in the fields of health monitoring, diagnosis, and drug delivery. Recent advances in wearable technology have enabled real-time analysis of biofluids such as sweat, interstitial fluid, tears, saliva, wound fluid, and urine. The integration of microfluidics and emerging smart technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and Internet of Things (IoT), into wearable devices offers great potential for accurate and non-invasive monitoring and diagnosis. This paper provides an overview of current trends and developments in microfluidics and smart technologies in wearable devices for analyzing body fluids. The human microbiome contains trillions of microorganisms. These organisms vary from person to person like fingerprints, and their composition depends on both host and environmental factors, of which diet plays a crucial role. Knowledge of the human microbiome is possible thanks to the introduction of new DNA sequencing methods, which have been developed over the last decade (Human Microbiome Project). This is when the notion of dysbiosis, which is not quite correct, was coined, i.e. disruption of the normal human microbiota. In the absence of standards for the composition and function of the microbiome, dysbiosis is a conventional term describing the differences in the composition and function of the microbiome between a healthy population and a population affected by, for example, a disease; despite its imperfections, this definition is quite suitable for describing changes in the microbiome in the case of various diseases, including cancer. The microbiome can influence the development and course of cancer through direct oncogenic effects, pro-inflammatory effects on mucous membranes, generation of metabolic abnormalities, modulation of the immune response and efficacy of anticancer treatment. Both tumour tissue and neighbouring tissues contain their own microbiome, and the same applies to other tissues and body fluids, which, through the microbiome and its metabolites, antigens, etc., can influence tumour development, progression and response to treatment. The gut microbiome is an important regulator of the immune response. It can also influence tumours and their treatment in distant organs. Due to the link between the microbiome and cancer, the potential of its modification in oncological treatment is of great interest to researchers and clinicians. The aim of this paper is to present the current state of knowledge of one of the most popular methods of modifying the microbiome-probiotics, which are commonly used by oncology patients. The surface properties of cardiovascular biomaterials play a critical role in their biological responses. Although bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) materials have exhibited potential applications in cardiovascular implants, the impact of their surface characteristics on biocompatibility has rarely been studied. This study investigated the mechanism for the biocompatibility induced by the physicochemical properties of both sides of BNC. With greater wettability and smoothness, the upper BNC surface reduced protein adsorption by 25 % compared with the lower surface. This prolonged the plasma re-calcification time by 14 % in venous blood. Further, compared with the lower BNC surface, the upper BNC surface prolonged the activated partial thromboplastin time by 5 % and 4 % in arterial and venous blood, respectively. Moreover, the lower BNC surface with lesser rigidity, higher roughness, and sparser fiber structure promoted cell adhesion. The lower BNC surface enhanced the proliferation rate of L929 and HUVECs cells by 15 % and 13 %, respectively, compared with the upper BNC surface. With lesser stiffness, the lower BNC surface upregulated the expressions of CD31 and eNOS while down-regulating the ICAM-1 expression - This promoted the proliferation of HUVECs. Advancements in research concerning the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in human blood, sputum, urine, and breast milk samples have piqued the interest of the scientific community, prompting further investigation. MPs present in the placenta, amniotic fluid, and meconium raise concerns about interference with embryonic development, leading to preeclampsia, stillbirth, preterm birth, and spontaneous abortion. The challenges posed by MPs extend beyond pregnancy, affecting the digestive, reproductive, circulatory, immune, and central nervous systems. This has spurred scientists to examine the origins of MPs in distinct environmental layers, including air, water, and soil. These risks continue after birth, as neonates are continuously exposed to MPs through everyday items such as breast milk, cow milk and infant milk powder, as well as plastic-based products like feeding bottles and breast milk storage bags. It is the need of the hour to strike a balance amidst lifestyle changes, alternative choices to traditional plastic products, raising awareness about plastic-related health risks, and fostering collaboration between the scientific community and policymakers. This review aims to provide fresh insights into potential sources of MP pollution, with a specific focus on pregnancy and neonates. Persistent, mobile and toxic substances have drawn attention nowadays due to their particular properties, but they are overlooked in human monitorization works, limiting the knowledge of the human exposome. In that sense, human urine is an interesting matrix since not only parent compounds are eliminated, but also their phase II metabolites that could act as biomarkers. In this work, 11 sample preparation procedures involving preconcentration were tested to ensure maximum analytical coverage in human urine using mixed-mode liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. The optimized procedure consisted of a combination of solid-phase extraction and salt-assisted liquid-liquid extraction and it was employed for suspect screening. Additionally, a non-discriminatory dilute-and-shoot approach was also evaluated. After evaluating the workflow in terms of limits of identification and type II errors (i.e., false negatives), a pooled urine sample was analysed. From a list of 1450 suspects and in-silico simulated 1568 phase II metabolites (i.e. sulphates, glucuronides, and glycines), 44 and 14 substances were annotated, respectively. Most of the screened suspects were diverse industrial chemicals, but biocides, natural products and pharmaceuticals were also detected. Lastly, the complementarity of the sample preparation procedures, columns, and analysis conditions was assessed. Blood-containing mixtures are frequently encountered at crime scenes involving violence and murder. However, the presence of blood, and the association of blood with a specific donor within these mixtures present significant challenges in forensic analysis. In light of these challenges, this study sought to address these issues by leveraging blood-specific methylation sites and closely linked microhaplotype sites, proposing a novel composite genetic marker known as "blood-specific methylation-microhaplotype". This marker was designed to the detection of blood and the determination of blood donor within blood-containing mixtures. According to the selection criteria mentioned in the Materials and Methods section, we selected 10 blood-specific methylation-microhaplotype loci for inclusion in this study. Among these loci, eight exhibited blood-specific hypomethylation, while the remaining two displayed blood-specific hypermethylation. Based on data obtained from 124 individual samples in our study, the combined discrimination power (CPD) of these 10 successfully sequenced loci was 0.999999298. The sample allele methylation rate (Ram) was obtained from massive parallel sequencing (MPS), which was defined as the proportion of methylated reads to the total clustered reads that were genotyped to a specific allele. To develop an allele type classification model capable of identifying the presence of blood and the blood donor, we used the Random Forest algorithm. This model was trained and evaluated using the Ram distribution of individual samples and the Ram distribution of simulated shared alleles. Subsequently, we applied the developed allele type classification model to predict alleles within actual mixtures, trying to exclude non-blood-specific alleles, ultimately allowing us to identify the presence of blood and the blood donor in the blood-containing mixtures. Our findings demonstrate that these blood-specific methylation-microhaplotype loci have the capability to not only detect the presence of blood but also accurately associate blood with the true donor in blood-containing mixtures with the mixing ratios of 1:29, 1:19, 1:9, 1:4, 1:2, 2:1, 7:1, 8:1, 31:1 and 36:1 (blood:non-blood) by DNA mixture interpretation methods. In addition, the presence of blood and the true blood donor could be identified in a mixture containing four body fluids (blood:vaginal fluid:semen:saliva = 1:1:1:1). It is important to note that while these loci exhibit great potential, the impact of allele dropouts and alleles misidentification must be considered when interpreting the results. The identification of biological stains and their tissue resource is an important part of forensic research. Current methods suffer from several limitations including poor sensitivity and specificity, trace samples, and sample destruction. In this study, we profiled the proteomes of menstrual blood, peripheral blood, saliva, semen, and vaginal fluid with mass spectrometry technology. Tissue-enhanced and tissue-specific proteins of each group have been proposed as potential biomarkers. These candidate proteins were further annotated and screened through the combination with the Human Protein Atlas database. Our data not only validates the protein biomarkers reported in previous studies but also identifies novel candidate biomarkers for human body fluids. Supercapacitors, pivotal in mitigating the energy crisis stemming from dwindling fossil fuel reservoirs, necessitate meticulous consideration of electrode material preparation. While lignin-derived carbon materials sourced sustainably exhibit commendable potential as electrode materials, their intrinsic low capacitance limits widespread utilization. Herein, nitrogen atom doping of lignin (CNL) was accomplished employing a chemical modification technique employing cyanuric chloride as a dopant. The resultant nitrogen content measured at 2.85 %. Subsequent to CNL carbonation, the generated C 3 N 4 was selectively confined to the internal surface of the CNLMS-800 through a domain-limited activation method, thereby rendering it suitable for deployment as a supercapacitor electrode material. CNLMS-800 manifests a substantial specific surface area of 1778.0 m 2  g -1 and a concomitantly diminutive pore size of 2.6 nm. Noteworthy, the specific capacitance of CNLMS-800 attains 473.0 F g -1 at a current density of 0.5 A g -1 in a 6 M KOH electrolyte. The resultant energy density reaches 39.0 Wh kg -1 at a power density of 338.0 W kg -1 . Crucially, even after 20,000 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 10 A g -1 , the capacitance retention attains an impressive 87.5 % in the KOH electrolyte. Respiratory problems are common amongst older people. The rapid increase in the ageing population has led to a need for developing technologies that can monitor such conditions unobtrusively. This paper presents a novel study that investigates Wi-Fi and ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna sensors to simultaneously monitor two different breathing parameters: respiratory rate, and exhaled breath. Experiments were carried out with two subjects undergoing three breathing cases in breaths per minute (BPM): (1) slow breathing (12 BPM), (2) moderate breathing (20 BPM), and (3) fast breathing (28 BPM). Respiratory rates were captured by Wi-Fi sensors, and the data were processed to extract the respiration rates and compared with a metronome that controlled the subjects' breathing. On the other hand, exhaled breath data were captured by a UWB antenna using a vector network analyser (VNA). Corresponding reflection coefficient data (S11) were obtained from the subjects at the time of exhalation and compared with S11 in free space. The exhaled breath data from the UWB antenna were compared with relative humidity, which was measured with a digital psychrometer during the breathing exercises to determine whether a correlation existed between the exhaled breath's water vapour content and recorded S11 data. Finally, captured respiratory rate and exhaled breath data from the antenna sensors were compared to determine whether a correlation existed between the two parameters. The results showed that the antenna sensors were capable of capturing both parameters simultaneously. However, it was found that the two parameters were uncorrelated and independent of one another.

Synthetic polymers are widely used in medical devices and implants where biocompatibility and mechanical strength are key enablers of emerging technologies. One concern that has not been widely studied is the potential of their microplastics (MPs) release. Here we studied the levels of MP debris released following 8-week in vitro tests on three typical polyglycolic acid (PGA) based absorbable sutures (PGA 100, PGA 90 and PGA 75) and two nonabsorbable sutures (polypropylene-PP and polyamide-PA) in simulated body fluid. The MP release levels ranked from PGA 100 > > PGA 90 > PGA 75 > > PP ∼ PA. A typical PGA 100 suture released 0.63 ± 0.087 million micro (MPs > 1 µm) and 1.96 ± 0.04 million nano (NPs, 200-1000 nm) plastic particles per centimeter. In contrast, no MPs were released from the nonabsorbable sutures under the same conditions. PGA that was co-blended with 10-25% L-lactide or epsilon-caprolactone resulted in a two orders of magnitude lower level of MP release. Methcathinone, a psychoactive substance with stimulant properties, has raised concerns in recent years due to its presence in urine screenings, even among individuals with no history of drug abuse. To prevent misjudgment, this work aims to explore the source of methcathinone in urine. A total of 58 urine samples tested positive for methcathinone in the National Taiwan University Hospital cohort, with 27 linked to illicit drug use and 31 from individuals with no drug use history. Co-occurrence analysis revealed a strong association between methcathinone and over-the-counter cold medications containing pseudoephedrine or ephedrine. In an in vivo experiment, participants who consumed pseudoephedrine-containing drugs showed the presence of methcathinone in their urine, suggesting a connection between these substances. Additionally, tests on pharmaceutical products containing pseudoephedrine detected small amounts of methcathinone as impurities. The findings suggest that the presence of methcathinone in nonillicit drug users may be attributed to impurities in over-the-counter pseudoephedrine-containing medications. This raises concerns about potential misinterpretations of drug screening results and underscores the need for more comprehensive criteria for assessing drug use. Therapeutic proteins such as monoclonal antibodies (mAb) are known to form aggregates due to various factors. Phosphate buffered saline (PBS), human serum, and human serum filtrate (HSF) are some of the models used to analyze mAb stability in physiologically relevant in-vitro conditions. In this study, aggregation of mAb in PBS and models derived from body fluids seeded with mAb samples subjected to various stresses were compared. Samples containing mAb subjected to pH, temperature, UV light, stirring, and interfacial agitation stress were seeded into different models for 2 case studies. In the first case study, %HMW (high molecular weight species) of mAb in PBS and HSF were compared using size exclusion chromatography. It was found that change in %HMW was higher in PBS compared to HSF. For example, PBS containing mAb that was subjected to UV light stress showed change in HMW by >10 % over 72 h, but the change was <5 % in HSF. In second case study, aggregates particles of FITC tagged mAb were monitored in PBS and serum using fluorescence microscope image processing. It was found that PBS and serum containing mAb subjected to stirring and interfacial agitation resulted in aggregates of >2 µm size, and average size and percentage number of particles having >10 µm size was higher in serum compared to PBS at all analysis time point. Overall, it was found that aggregation of mAb in PBS was different from that in human body fluids. Background: Steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) accounts for approximately 80% of cases of nephrotic syndrome. The involvement of aberrant lipid metabolism in early SSNS is poorly understood, warranting further investigation. This study aimed to explore alterations in lipid metabolism associated with SSNS pathogenesis., Methods: A screening cohort containing serum (50 SSNS, 37 controls) and urine samples (27 SSNS, 26 controls) was analyzed by untargeted lipidomic profiling using UHPLC-QTOF-MS. Then, a validation cohort (20 SSNS, 56 controls) underwent further analysis to check the potential clinical application by ROC curve analysis., Results: Lipidomic profiling of serum and urine samples revealed significant lipid alterations in SSNS patients, with the alterations in the serum samples being more significant. An elevated concentration of PE and PG and downregulated concentration of FA were observed in SSNS serum. A total of 38 dysregulated lipids and 5 lipid metabolic pathways were identified in the serum samples in SSNS patients. Biological traces discovered at crime scenes hold significant significance in forensic investigations. In cases involving mixed body fluid stains, the evidentiary value of DNA profiles depends on the type of body fluid from which the DNA was obtained. Recently, coding region polymorphism analysis has proved to be a promising method for directly linking specific body fluids to their respective DNA contributors in mixtures, which may help to avoid "association fallacy" between separate DNA and RNA evidence. In this study, we present an update on previously reported coding region Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (cSNPs) by exploring the potential application of coding region Insertion/Deletion polymorphisms (cInDels). Nine promising cInDels, selected from 70 mRNA markers based on stringent screening criteria, were integrated into an existing mRNA profiling assay. Subsequently, the body fluid specificity of our cInDel assay and the genotyping consistency between complementary DNA (cDNA) and genomic DNA (gDNA) were examined. Valve control for patients feeding saline is a sensitive issue. Such a valve is used to control the amount of important fluid entering the body. In this paper, we present an intelligent method based on fuzzy logic (FL) to deliver drugs and nutrients to patients through intravenous catheters. The proposed method is called intelligent saline controlling valve (ISCV) and relies on three inputs and two outputs. Specifically, the fluid's drip, pressure, and the number of available bubbles are the three-valve inputs that control the two outputs which are the opening and closing. This paper reports on the coating of heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes on Ti substrates by anodizing at high voltages to design surfaces for biomedical implants. As the anodized voltage from 50 V to 350 V was applied, the microstructure of the coating shifted from regular TiO2 nanotubes to heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes. In addition, the dimension of the heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes was a function of voltage. The electrochemical characteristics of TiO2 nanotubes and heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes were evaluated in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. The creation of heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes on Ti substrates resulted in a significant increase in BHK cell attachment compared to that of the Ti substrates and the TiO2 nanotubes. Biological evidence is relatively common evidence in criminal cases, and it has strong probative power because it carries DNA information for individual identification. At the scene of fire-related cases, the complex thermal environment, the escape of trapped people, the firefighting and rescue operations, and the deliberate destruction of criminal suspects will all affect the biological evidence in the fire scene. Scholars at home and abroad have explored and studied the effectiveness of biological evidence identification in fire scenes, and found that the blood stains, semen stains, bones, etc. are the main biological evidence which can be easily recovered with DNA in fire scenes. In order to analyze the research status and development trend of biological evidence in fire scenes, this paper systematically sorts out the relevant research, mainly including the soot removal technology, appearance method of typical biological evidence, and possibility of identifying other biological evidence. This paper also prospects the next step of research direction, in order to provide reference for the identification of biological evidence and improve the value of biological evidence in fire scenes.

A comprehensive study was conducted to investigate how ultraviolet (UV) irradiation combined with electrochemistry (EC) can efficiently remove human body fluids (HBFs) related pollutants, such as urea/creatinine/hippuric acid, from swimming pool water (SPW). In comparison with the chlorination, UV, EC, and UV/chlorine treatments, the EC/UV treatment exhibited the highest removal rates for these typical pollutants (TPs) from HBFs in synthetic SPW. Specifically, increasing the operating current of the EC/UV process from 20 to 60 mA, as well as NaCl content from 0.5 to 3.0 g/L, improved urea and creatinine degradation while having no influence on hippuric acid. In contrast, EC/UV process was resilient to changes in water parameters (pH, HCO 3 - , and actual water matrix). Urea removal was primarily attributable to reactive chlorine species (RCS), whereas creatinine and hippuric acid removal were primarily related to hydroxyl radical, UV photolysis, and RCS. In addition, the EC/UV procedure can lessen the propensity for creatinine and hippuric acid to generate disinfection by-products. Background: Gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) is a powerful analytical technique which has gained widespread use in a variety of fields. Detecting peaks in GC-IMS data is essential for chemical identification. Topological data analysis (TDA) has the ability to record alterations in topology throughout the entire spectrum of GC-IMS data and retain this data in diagrams known as persistence diagrams. To put it differently, TDA naturally identifies characteristics such as mountains, volcanoes, and their higher-dimensional equivalents within the original data and measures their significance., Results: In the present contribution, a novel approach based on persistent homology (a flagship technique of TDA) is suggested for automatic 2D peak detection in GC-IMS. For this purpose, two different GC-IMS data examples (urine and olive oil) are used to show the performance of the proposed method. The outputs of the algorithm are GC-IMS chromatogram with detected peaks, persistence plot showing the importance (intensity) of the detected peaks and a table with retention times (RT), drift times (DT), and persistence scores of detected peaks. The RT and DT can be used for identification of the peaks and persistence scores for quantitation. Additionally, watershed segmentation is applied to the GC-IMS images to index individual peaks and segment overlapping compounds allowing for a more accurate identification and quantification of individual peaks., Significance: Inspection of the results for GC-IMS datasets showed the accurate and reliable performance of the proposed strategy based on persistent homology for automatic 2D GC-IMS peak detection for qualitative and quantitative analysis. The production of plastics is rising since they have been invented. Micro, submicro- and nanoplastics are produced intentionally or generated by environmental processes, and constitute ubiquitous contaminants which are ingested orally by consumers. Reported health concerns include intestinal translocation, inflammatory response, oxidative stress and cytotoxicity. Every digestive milieu in the gastrointestinal tract does have an influence on the properties of particles and can cause changes in their effect on biological systems. In this study, we subjected plastic particles of different materials (polylactic acid, polymethylmethacrylate, melamine formaldehyde) and sizes (micro- to nano-range) to a complex artificial digestion model consisting of three intestinal fluid simulants (saliva, gastric and intestinal juice). We monitored the impact of the digestion process on the particles by performing Dynamic Light Scattering, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Asymmetric Flow Field-Flow Fractionation. An in vitro model of the intestinal epithelial barrier was used to monitor cellular effects and translocation behavior of (un)digested particles. In conclusion, artificial digestion decreased cellular interaction and slightly increased transport of all particles across the intestinal barrier. The interaction with organic matter resulted in clear differences in the agglomeration behavior. Composite hydrogel microparticles based on pectins with different structures (callus culture pectin (SVC) and apple pectin (AU)) and gelatin were developed. Hydrogel microparticles were formed by the ionotropic gelation and electrostatic interaction of COO - groups of pectin and NH 3 + groups of gelatin, which was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The addition of gelatin to pectin-based gel formulations resulted in a decrease in gel strength, whereas increasing gelatin concentration enhanced this effect. The microparticle gel strength increased in proportion to the increase in the pectin concentration. The DSC and TGA analyzes showed that pectin-gelatin gels had the higher thermal stability than individual pectins. The gel strength, Ca 2+ content and thermal stability of the microparticles based on gelatin and SVC pectin with a lower degree of methylesterification (DM) (14.8 %) were higher compared to that of microparticles based on gelatin and AU pectin with a higher DM (40 %). An increase in the SVC concentration, Ca 2+ content and gel strength of SVC-gelatin microparticles led to a decrease in the swelling degree in simulated gastrointestinal fluids. Background: The detection and quantification of urinary metabolites play an important role in disease diagnosis. In most cases, urinary analyses are done with liquid urine samples, which must be quickly transported to the laboratory to avoid metabolites degradation that is associated with temperature fluctuations. Consequently, dried sampling devices have emerged to minimize analyte degradation. However, most commercial dried sampling devices are expensive, aggregate low volumes, and need better analytical sensitivity. Therefore, a new dry urine sampling device that is inexpensive, suitable for domestic sampling operation, and efficient for quantifying metabolites without requiring high-resolution instruments is proposed in the present study., Results: The newly designed dry urine sampling device was produced by 3D printing that efficiently determines 63 urinary organic acids using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The system's efficiency was demonstrated with analytical figures of merit, such as precision, accuracy, and stability of analytes after the sampling and storing of ordinary urine samples. The limits of quantification ranged from 0.01 to 0.42 ng mL-1. Precision and accuracy tests showed relative standard deviations of less than 15 %. The urine stability in the sampling device was high within seven days without any significant degradation of the metabolites. The method was applied to the analysis of 10 human urine samples and compared to a conventional method without the use of the sampling device. The results showed no statistically significant differences, demonstrating the method's efficiency., Significance: The proposed 3-D printing device was developed with fast, low-cost manufacturing features and can be manufactured with different volumetric capacities, adaptable to the needs of each user. Sediment cores are optimal mediums for investigating the historical presence of offshore microplastics (MPs). In this study, two sediment cores were collected at varying water depths, i.e., XS2 (10 m) and XS3 (20 m), from the Xiangshan offshore (XSO) in Ningbo. We focused on the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of MPs within two sediment cores and explored the response differences of MPs abundance to natural factors and human activities. The results showed that the MPs abundance in sediments has gradually increased since the late 1960s, but with interannual fluctuations. MPs abundance in XS2 and XS3 were 1133-8700 and 633-11433 items/kg dry weight, respectively. The predominant polymers were PA, PU, PET and ACR, with fragmented particles being the most prevalent shape of MPs. The MPs abundance in XS2 and XS3 had a similar response to natural factors, mainly including (i) MPs abundance significantly correlated with the sediment load of the Qiantang River (p < 0.01), indicating that sediment load might be an important factor affecting the MPs abundance and that MPs transported by rivers had characteristics of near-source sedimentation; (ii) typhoons had the effect of weakening the MPs abundance; and (iii) geological activities might be potential contributing factors to variations in MPs' abundance in deep sediments. Correlation analyses demonstrated that MPs in XSO was the result of multiple sources, stemming from plastic production, sewage discharge, marine fisheries and shipping activities. Notably, XS3 exhibited higher sensitivity to human activities compared to XS2, owing to differences in sampling locations. This study underscores the significance of employing two sediment cores, rather than a single core, as it provides a more comprehensive insight into the overarching trends and disparities in the historical pollution of MPs. Monitoring the levels of uric acid (UA) in body fluids is of great significance in the clinical diagnosis and therapy of related diseases. Herein, a novel nanocomposite R6G@Fe-MOF based nonenzymatic probe is presented to provide a ratiometric fluorescent, colorimetric, and photothermal triple read-out signal for the visual, sensitive, and convenient assay of UA. The framework structure of the in situ encapsulated R6G@Fe-MOF is found to decompose upon the addition of UA, resulting in the reduction of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ . This reduction will lead to a rapid increase in fluorescence emission (FL) at 430 nm. Simultaneously, the FL at 573 nm will decrease remarkably due to the inner filter effect (IFE) between UA and R6G@Fe-MOF. Furthermore, the reaction of the generated Fe 2+ with potassium ferricyanide (K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ]) can in situ generate Prussian blue (PBNPs) with outstanding color and photothermal properties, which allow for easy colorimetric and photothermal signal readout. The detection limits (LOD) for the colorimetric, fluorometric and photothermal detection are low at 1.68 μM, 0.236 μM, and 1.32 μM respectively. Ultimately, it is successfully employed to determine UA in urine, serum, and saliva, yielding satisfactory results. Purine intermediates play important roles in physiological function and participate in the kidney disorders, while a targeted quantification of the metabolic alterations in the purine metabolism in acute kidney injury (AKI) individuals has not been conducted. In the study, a novel, rapid and sensitive LC-MS method for simultaneous quantification of 16 purine metabolites was developed using hydrophilic interaction separation mode in human plasma and urine. The developed method was validated by using charcoal-stripped plasma and urine as blank matrix. The results showed that the method was good linear (R 2  > 0.99) and the lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) ranged from 0.833 ng/mL to 800 ng/mL. The recovery and matrix effect were repeatable and stable. The intraday precision ranged from 0.7% to 12.7%, while the inter-day precision ranged from 1.6% to 18.5%. Most analytes were stable in the autosampler and could subject three freeze-thaw cycles. The method provided a wider coverage of purine metabolites and completed good separation of interfering compounds of nucleosides, deoxynucleosides and their corresponding nucleobases without derivatization, which was time-saving and labor-saving for the large-scale analysis. Furthermore, the method was successfully applied to plasma and urine samples of hospitalized patients without and with AKI. The results showed certain purine intermediates were up-regulated in plasma and down-regulated in urine of AKI inpatients, indicating that AKI stress may associate with inflammatory responses. There is limited data available on the subject of indirect transfer of non-visible body fluids, particularly semen, and often forensic science practitioner experience alone must be used to guide expectations. It can be difficult to assess the likelihood of proposed transfer scenarios without knowledge of how different variables can affect a transfer. The following work carried out by the Association of Forensic Service Providers UK and Ireland Body Fluid Forum explores how the features of transferred semen change with differences in the primary and secondary surface (porous and non- porous), different contact types (passive, pressure and pressure+) and with wet and dry primary stains. It was concluded that the primary surface type and whether the stain was wet or dry when contact occurred had the most significant effect on the transfer of semen, with wet transfers and transfers from the tested non-porous surface producing significantly more, and larger, visible stains under white light, stains with stronger fluorescence as viewed using Crime-lite® ML2, stains with stronger and faster acid phosphatase reactions and greater numbers of spermatozoa viewed using high power microscopy, compared to dry transfers and transfers from the tested porous surface. Pressure with movement transfers resulted in significantly more visible stains under white light and greater numbers of spermatozoa viewed using high power microscopy compared to passive transfers, however this only occurred when transfers were from a porous primary surface. A comprehensive investigation into the impact of the physical and chemical variables of a substrate on the deposition was conducted to aid in the estimation of the subsequent transfer probabilities of blood and semen. The study focussed on surface roughness, topography, surface free energy (SFE), wettability, and the capacity for protein adsorption. Conjointly, evaluations of the physical and chemical characteristics of blood and seminal deposits were conducted, to assess the fluid dynamics of these non-Newtonian fluids and their adhesion potential to aluminium and polypropylene. A linear range of surface roughness parameters (0.5 - 3.5 µm) were assessed for their impact on the deposit deposition spread and adhesion height, to gather insight into the change in fluid dynamics of non-Newtonian fluids. Blood has shown to produce a uniform adhesion coverage on aluminium across all roughness categories while blood deposited on polypropylene exhibited a strong hydrophobic response from a surface roughness of 2.0 µm and beyond. Interestingly, the deposition height of blood resulted in near identical values, whether deposited onto the hydrophobic polypropylene or the hydrophilic aluminium substrate, illustrating the potential influence of a heightened fibrinogen adsorption effect. Semen deposited on aluminium resulted in concentrated localised deposition regions after reaching a surface roughness of 2.0 µm, highlighting the development of crystal formations afforded by the sodium ion concentration in the seminal fluid. The semen deposited on polypropylene conformed to the substrate contours producing a deposition film that was smoother than the substrate itself, underlining the effects of thixotropic fluid dynamics. Biofluidic open-type supercapacitors offer significant advantages over batteries in implantable electronics. However, poor energy storage in bioelectrolytes and performance degradation owing to electrode biofouling remain challenges and hamper their implementation. In this study, we present a flexible polydopamine (PDA)-infiltrated carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn (PDA/CNT) supercapacitor with high performance in biofluids, encapsulated by a hydrogel-barrier circular knit that provides anti-biofouling protection. Infiltration of the biopolymer PDA provide a hydrophilic coating to obtain a hydrophobic CNT electrode under aqueous conditions and an energy density 250-fold higher than that of the pristine CNT in the biofluid. The PDA/CNT supercapacitor exhibited remarkable energy performance in biological fluids in terms of the maximum areal capacitance (503.91 mF cm -2 ), energy density (274 μWh/cm 2 ), and power density (25.52 mW cm -2 ). Moreover, it demonstrated negligible capacitance loss after 10,000 repeated charge/discharge cycles and bending tests. To prevent biofouling, the PDA/CNT electrode was encapsulated in an agarose-coated circular knit that allows free movement of the electrolyte. From its onset and during its progression, lung cancer may affect various extrapulmonary structures. These include the serous membranes, the pleura and pericardium, and less frequently the central nervous system, with leptomeningeal involvement. In these cases, fluid accumulates in the serous membranes which may contain substances secreted by the tumor. Measuring the concentrations of these substances can provide useful information for elucidating the origin of the fluid accumulation, either in pleural and pericardial effusions or in cerebrospinal fluid. This paper describes the histological types of lung cancer that most frequently affect the serosa and leptomeninges. It also reviews the literature on tumor markers in different fluids and makes recommendations for their interpretation.

Hyperuricemia (HUA) has received wide attention as an independent risk factor for various chronic diseases. HUA is usually asymptomatic, and the related damage can be reduced by effective classification and treatment according to uric acid clearance (UAC). UAC is a calculated ratio based on the uric acid level in blood and urine. This important method is not universally used due to the inconvenience of collecting 24-h urine samples in the clinic, and most sensors are limited by the need for wide ranges and for two testing samples. In this study, a pH-sensitive urate oxidase-modified electrochemical sensor with filter membrane was proposed to calculate UAC by detecting uric acid in blood and urine. The results demonstrated that the sensor had high selectivity for uric acid with a detection limit of 0.25 μM in 5 μL spot sample, the wide linear range was 2.5-7000 μM, and the impact of the sample pH was calibrated. The linear correlation of the measurement results between the UAC sensor and clinical instrument was higher than 0.980 for 87 patients. The change in UAC in spot urine may reflect alteration in body-transport mechanisms. Introduction: Previous studies have evaluated metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) for pathogen detection in blood and body fluid samples. However, no study has assessed the diagnostic efficacy of mNGS using cellular DNA., Objectives: This is the first study to systematically evaluate the efficacy of cfDNA and cellular DNA mNGS for pathogen detection., Methods: A panel of seven microorganisms was used to compare cfDNA and cellular DNA mNGS assays concerning limits of detection (LoD), linearity, robustness to interference, and precision. In total, 248 specimens were collected between December 2020 and December 2021. The medical records of all the patients were reviewed. These specimens were analysed using cfDNA and cellular DNA mNGS assays, and the mNGS results were confirmed using viral qPCR, 16S rRNA, and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) amplicon next-generation sequencing., Results: The LoD of cfDNA and cellular DNA mNGS was 9.3 to 149 genome equivalents (GE)/mL and 27 to 466 colony-forming units (CFU)/mL, respectively. The intra- and inter-assay reproducibility of cfDNA and cellular DNA mNGS was 100%. Clinical evaluation revealed that cfDNA mNGS was good at detecting the virus in blood samples (receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC), 0.9814). In contrast, the performance of cellular DNA mNGS was better than that of cfDNA mNGS in high host background samples. Overall, the diagnostic efficacy of cfDNA combined with cellular DNA mNGS (ROC AUC, 0.8583) was higher than that of cfDNA (ROC AUC, 0.8041) or cellular DNA alone (ROC AUC, 0.7545)., Conclusion: Overall, cfDNA mNGS is good for detecting viruses, and cellular DNA mNGS is suitable for high host background samples. Phthalates are a family of industrial and consumer product chemicals, among which diethyl phthalate (DEP) has been widely used. DEP is metabolized into the active metabolite monoethyl phthalate (MEP) and exposure to DEP may induce male reproductive toxicity, developmental toxicity and hepatotoxicity. To better assess the toxicity of DEP and MEP, it is important to understand and predict their internal concentrations, especially in reproductive organs. Here we present a human physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of DEP. Implemented in R, the PBPK model consists of seven tissue compartments, including blood, gut, liver, fat, skin, gonad, and rest of body (RB). In the blood both DEP and MEP partition into free and bound forms, and tissue distribution is considered as blood flow-limited. DEP is metabolized in the gut and liver into MEP which is further glucuronidated and cleared through the urine. The chemical-specific parameters of the model were predicted in silico or estimated based on published human urinary MEP data after exposure to DEP in the air at 250 or 300 μg/m 3 for 3 or 6 h through inhalation and dermal absorption. Sensitivity analysis identified important parameters including partition coefficients of DEP for fat, RB, and skin compartments, and the rate constants for glucuronidation of MEP and urinary excretion, with regard to C max , area under the curve (AUC), and clearance half-lives of DEP and MEP. A subset of the sensitive parameters was then included in hierarchical population Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations to characterize the uncertainty and variability of these parameters. The model is consistent with the notion that dermal absorption represents a significant route of exposure to DEP in ambient air and clothing can be an effective barrier. Various body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and saliva are frequently encountered at crime scene. In cases of sexual assault, semen stains are one of the most reliable evidence of biological origin. In this study, our objective was to develop a method for estimating the time since deposition of semen stains on five different fabric types using Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) Spectroscopy, with a focus on a time frame of up to 8 weeks. Semen samples from six different volunteers were dripped onto five distinct fabric materials, and ATR-FTIR measurements were obtained at 17 different time points. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) methods were employed to differentiate semen stains on various fabric samples and estimate the age of semen stains. Models constructed using PCA and PLSR achieved high R 2 values and low root-mean-square error (RMSE). While the performance varies depending on fabric types, it was observed that age estimation of semen stains can be made within following intervals: 0.39-0.76 days for 0-7 day range, 2.59-3.38 days for the 1-8 week range, and 3.98-8.1 days for the 0-56 day range. The Colibrí™ is a new instrument that automates picking and placement of colonies on target plates for MALDI identification. This study compared the performance of the Colibrí™ to standard manual spotting using the VITEK® MS for bacterial identification. Colonies were selected from cultures of urine, wound, respiratory, and positive blood cultures. The Colibrí™ sampled the colonies, transferred them to a MALDI target slide, and overlayed each spot with matrix. Manual spotting was then performed using the same or similar colonies. A total of 444 bacteria were compared. Identification was achieved with both methods for 432 organisms with only 2 discrepant results, overall agreement of 99.54%. Twelve organisms (2.70%) gave no identification using Colibrí™. The Colibrí™ provides automation to a manual process with a high accuracy. The infection caused by Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus is a dangerous vector-borne disease found in humans, domestic, and wild animals. It is transferred through insect vectors to ruminant host and then spread through direct contact of infected animals with their body fluid or organs. In this paper, a fractal-fractional model for the transmission of RVF in the Caputo's sense was presented. We analyzed the model and determined the basic reproduction number through the next-generation matrix technique, indicated by R0. The global sensitivity technique is used for the sensitivity test of R0 to find out the most sensitive input-factors to the reproduction parameter R0. The existence and uniqueness results of the proposed fractal-fractional model were established. Then, we presented the fractal-fractional dynamics of the proposed RVF model through a novel numerical scheme under the fractal-fractional Caputo operator. In the end, the recommended model of RVF was highlighted numerically with the variation of different input parameters of the system. Owing to the complex lifestyle of the current generation and the nature of disease burden, the extensive use of selective β–blockers have increased. Although many β–blockers are considered safe for ingestion via different routes, in some cases, ingestion can lead to fatal doses. However, postmortem analysis of these materials is limited to body fluid, and the use of visceral samples has not yet been explored. In this paper, we successfully extracted metoprolol from visceral samples. The quantification of extracted metoprolol from Viscera-I and Viscera-II was carried out using the GC‒MS-SIM method. The quantity of metoprolol used in the Viscera-I and Viscera-II groups was 10.58 mg and 1.14 mg per 100 g of visceral sample, respectively. The heat exchange between a rigid body and a fluid is usually modelled by the Robin boundary condition saying that the heat flux through the interface is proportional to the difference between their temperatures. Such interface law describes only the unilateral heat exchange. The goal of this paper is to compare the Robin boundary condition starting with the transmission condition (the temperature and the flux continuity) using rigorous mathematical analysis. Our main results are the following. We first show that a generalized version of the Robin boundary condition can be justified. Second, we prove that replacing the generalized by the standard Robin condition can be justified for high convection velocity if the conductivity of the surrounding liquid is much lower than that of the body. On the other hand, if the fluid conducts much better than the body, then the effective boundary condition is shown not to be the Robin one, but it involves second-order derivatives. We strongly believe that those findings bring new insights to the physics of the heat exchange processes and, thus, could prove useful in engineering practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigated the static in vitro degradation behavior of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA)-oriented microcellular materials. The study compared the influence of different molecular chains and internal morphological structures on water penetration into the material. Also, the relationship between thse self-accelerated degradation caused by ester bond breakage and reduced material molecular weight and mechanical properties was explored. Furthermore, the mechanism behind the static in vitro degradation of oriented microcellular PLLA materials in simulated human body fluid was explored, laying the foundation for regulating the mechanical performance decline of oriented microcellular biomimetic bone repair materials to match specific bone healing periods. Body fluid biomarkers are very important, because they can be detected in a non-invasive or minimally invasive way. The discovery of secreted proteins in human body fluids is an essential step toward proteomic biomarker identification for human diseases. Recently, many computational methods have been proposed to predict secreted proteins and achieved some success. However, most of them are based on a manual negative dataset, which is usually biased and therefore limits the prediction performances. In this paper, we first propose a novel positive-unlabeled learning framework to predict secreted proteins in a single body fluid. The secreted protein discovery in a single body fluid is transformed into multiple binary classifications and solved via multi-task learning. Also, an effective convolutional neural network is employed to reduce the overfitting problem. After that, we then improve this framework to predict secreted proteins in multiple body fluids simultaneously. The improved framework adopts a globally shared network to further improve the prediction performances of all body fluids. The improved framework was trained and evaluated on datasets of 17 body fluids, and the average benchmarks of 17 body fluids achieved an accuracy of 89.48%, F1 score of 56.17%, and PRAUC of 58.93%. From its onset and during its progression, lung cancer may affect various extrapulmonary structures. These include the serous membranes, the pleura and pericardium, and less frequently the central nervous system, with leptomeningeal involvement. In these cases, fluid accumulates in the serous membranes which may contain substances secreted by the tumor. Measuring the concentrations of these substances can provide useful information for elucidating the origin of the fluid accumulation, either in pleural and pericardial effusions or in cerebrospinal fluid. This paper describes the histological types of lung cancer that most frequently affect the serosa and leptomeninges.
