Australia is yet to adequately grapple with the unique challenges that critical seabed infrastructure protection poses to its defence and national security. While the paramount importance of Australia's sea lines of communication are widely understood, Australia's seabed lines of communication are understudied and underappreciated. This article lays the foundation for an Australian strategy to protect critical seabed infrastructure that constitutes seabed lines of communications. The article first overviews critical seabed infrastructure in Australia's immediate region. Second, it examines various suspected cases of seabed warfare in Europe and the Indo-Pacific which targeted critical seabed infrastructure. Third, the article analyses Australia's response to date, before, fourth and finally, outlining how Australia, and in particular the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), ought to respond to the growing threat to seabed lines of communication. By systematically analysing seabed warfare trends since 2021 using reputable journalism, think tank reports and fresh regional responses, this article demonstrates Australia's seabed vulnerabilities, and novel resiliency strategies. When building regression models for multivariate abundance data in ecology, it is important to allow for the fact that the species are correlated with each other. Moreover, there is often evidence species exhibit some degree of homogeneity in their responses to each environmental predictor, and that most species are informed by only a subset of predictors. We propose a generalized estimating equation (GEE) approach for simultaneous homogeneity pursuit (ie, grouping species with similar coefficient values while allowing differing groups for different covariates) and variable selection in regression models for multivariate abundance data. Using GEEs allows us to straightforwardly account for between-response correlations through a (reduced-rank) working correlation matrix. We augment the GEE with both adaptive fused lasso- and adaptive lasso-type penalties, which aim to cluster the species-specific coefficients within each covariate and encourage differing levels of sparsity across the covariates, respectively. Numerical studies demonstrate the strong finite sample performance of the proposed method relative to several existing approaches for modeling multivariate abundance data. Applying the proposed method to presence–absence records collected along the Great Barrier Reef in Australia reveals both a substantial degree of homogeneity and sparsity in species-environmental relationships. We show this leads to a more parsimonious model for understanding the environmental drivers of seabed biodiversity, and results in stronger out-of-sample predictive performance relative to methods that do not accommodate such features. The loss of marine biodiversity is a major global issue that needs to be prioritised. In Australia, a considerable proportion (48%) of its Exclusive Economic Zone is dedicated to marine protected areas. To effectively manage this network of marine protected areas Australia has recently introduced a Management Effectiveness system. This system is designed to identify, monitor, and manage natural values and the various activities and pressures affecting the Australian Marine Parks (AMPs). Key to this approach is the identification and accurate mapping of the location of these values and pressures acting on the seabed. The AusSeabed program is a national initiative in Australia aimed at improving access to bathymetric data and coordinating efforts to collect such data in Australian waters. This manuscript proposes a novel systematic processing method to create detailed and scalable geomorphometric maps from AusSeabed's bathymetric data holdings, intended as a standard operating procedure for initial bathymetric data interpretation in the AMPs. Utilising this workflow, we produce seafloor geomorphometry maps across 37 AMPs within which sufficient bathymetric data has been collected. These maps can be used 1) for predictive mapping of biological assemblages; 2) in field sampling design for the collection of 'ground truthing' data (e.g. underwater imagery and sediment samples) to validate habitat maps from bathymetric datasets; and 3) as input datasets for subsequent geomorphological mapping with a deeper understanding of seafloor processes. This research highlights the importance of robust geomorphometry classification standards to ensure consistency in mapping Australia's marine estate in preparation for the Decade of Oceans plans. The Seamap Australia program provides a stepwise approach to advancing Australia's national collection of bathymetric data into derived products that can enable habitat mapping of Australian waters, providing a foundational tool for the adaptive management of AMPs. • Submarine dense shelf water cascade can transform into supercritical turbidity currents. • This current transformation should be common on outer continental shelves worldwide. • The transformation process can significantly influence seabed morphology. Dense shelf water cascade (DSWC) is a common oceanographic phenomenon on many continental shelves. Previous studies indicate that the DSWC could shape seabed physiography and carry seawater, sediment, and organic carbon a long distance from the continental shelf to the basin floor. However, it remains enigmatic how these DSWC's interact with seabed geomorphology and travel long distances from the shallow to deep marine environments. In this study, we employed high-resolution multibeam bathymetry, 2D and 3D seismic reflection, core description, and sediment grain size data from the Gippsland Basin, southeast offshore Australia. The continental shelf of the central Gippsland Basin stores sediment supplied by the along-shelf transported DSWC. By calculating the sediment motion threshold, we demonstrate that the DSWC is capable of entraining sediment from, and forming dense bottom nepheloid layers above, the seabed. Seismic reflection data reveal that cyclic steps are common on the shelf and slope, indicating a downslope-transported, supercritical current-dominated environment. Core observation and grain size analyses reveal that coarse-grained, Ta-typed turbidites are the major facies, indicating the presence of high-intensity downslope-traversing turbidity currents. Thus, supercritical turbidity currents are the dominant sedimentary process in the central Gippsland Basin. We illuminate that DSWC can interact with pre-existing seabed bathymetry created by a buried submarine landslide, resuspending sediment and igniting downslope-transported turbidity currents. The presence of numerous cyclic steps indicates that the turbidity current can evolve into a supercritical regime upon ignition, leaving complex seabed geomorphology and allowing the forming currents to travel across the shelf and extend more than 80 km down the lower slope. As revealed by our literature review, we imply that the transformation of DSWC into turbidity currents should be a common sedimentary process on outer continental shelves globally, significantly sculpting the seabed morphology and facilitating sediment and other marine particles transportation from shallow to deep sea.
