In the global context, countries must reduce carbon dioxide emissions to "net zero" by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. China's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve the carbon neutrality target by 2060. To monitor the achievements of the NDCs, establishing an annual-based accounting mechanism is necessary to record the carbon stocks in China, especially for Blue Carbon. The paper aims to present China's first national-scale systematic Blue Carbon accounting for mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses, covering the accounting subjects of physical and monetary assets, as well as relevant indicators for investors. It focuses on the design of the accounting method and system, the selection of data categories applied to this system, and the application of China's Blue Carbon accounting based on this accounting system. Taking Blue Carbon accounting as a starting point, this paper analyses the restoration prospects of these ecosystems and their application potential for NDCs in China compared with the terrestrial ecosystems. The results indicate that mangroves are the most cost-effective type of ecosystem, even compared to terrestrial forests. Thus, the paper provides policymakers with a new perspective on the decision-making of carbon sequestration relevant decisions, aiming to promote the monitoring, restoration, and expansion of China's coastal blue carbon ecosystem through the establishment of a sound Blue Carbon accounting system, and to help achieve the carbon neutrality goal in China's NDCs through regular and systematic monitoring of its national Blue Carbon inventories. • China's coastal blue carbon ecosystems are carbon sources rather than carbon sinks. • Mangroves are the most cost-effective coastal blue carbon ecosystem compared to salt marshes and seagrass beds. • The Blue Carbon of mangroves is more cost-effective than the Green Carbon of terrestrial forests when meeting China's Nationally Determined Contributions target of increasing forest stocks. • Establishing guidelines for Blue Carbon data requirements will lay a scientific foundation for formulating strategies and policies to cope with global climate change. Methanogens are the main participants in the carbon cycle, catalyzing five methanogenic pathways. Methanogens utilize different iron-containing functional enzymes in different methanogenic processes. Iron is a vital element in methanogens, which can serve as a carrier or reactant in electron transfer. Therefore, iron plays an important role in the growth and metabolism of methanogens. In this paper, we cast light on the types and functions of iron-containing functional enzymes involved in different methanogenic pathways, and the roles iron play in energy/substance metabolism of methanogenesis. Furthermore, this review provides certain guiding significance for lowering CH 4 emissions, boosting the carbon sink capacity of ecosystems and promoting green and low-carbon development in the future. There is a growing international interest in studying the effects of ocean acidification on plankton communities that play a major role in the global carbon cycle and in the consumption of atmospheric CO 2 via the so-called biological pump. Recently, several mesocosm experiments reported on the effect of ocean acidification on marine plankton communities, although the majority were performed in eutrophic conditions or following nutrient addition. The objective of the present study was to perform two mesocosm experiments in the oligo- to meso-trophic Northwestern Mediterranean Sea during two seasons with contrasting environmental conditions: in summer 2012 in the Bay of Calvi (Corsica, France) and in winter 2013 in the Bay of Villefranche (France). This paper describes the objectives of these experiments, the study sites, the experimental set-up and the environmental and experimental conditions during the two experiments. The 20-day experiment in the Bay of Calvi was undoubtedly representative of summer conditions in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea with low nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations, warm waters and high surface solar irradiance. In contrast, the winter experiment, which was reduced to 12 days because of bad weather conditions, failed to reproduce the mesotrophic conditions typical of the wintertime in this area. Indeed, a rapid increase in phytoplankton biomass during the acidification phase led to a strong decrease in nitrate concentrations and an unrealistic N and P co-limitation at this period of the year. Sulfuric acid is involved in carbonate rock dissolution in karst areas and affects regional hydrogeochemical and carbon cycling processes. Sulfate sources and carbonate weathering at dripwater points of different hydrological types also differ significantly. Therefore, in this paper, three dripwater points (SQ2#, PB and MH6#) of different hydrological types in Dafeng Cave and Mahuang Cave were selected and systematically analyzed. The results show that: (1) ions in the cave dripwater mainly originated from rock weathering, and the water chemistry types were HCO 3 ·Ca–Mg and HCO 3 –SO 4 ·Ca–Mg. (2) Sulfur and oxygen isotopes reveal that sulfate in the cave water of Shuanghe Cave mainly came from a mixture of soil sulfate and chemical fertilizers. (3) The Simmr model shows that the main sources of sulfate at each dripwater point were natural sources, such as soil sulfate and gypsum dissolution. The natural sources contributed more than 80% of the sulfate in the cave water and were less affected by anthropogenic activities. (4) Carbonate weathering by sulfuric acid (CSW) can accelerate rock weathering and the prior calcite precipitation effect, involving regional CO 2 exchange through fissure pipes. The forward model results show that CSW reduced the karst carbon sinks at SQ2#, PB and MH6# by about 19.44%, 23.88% and 12.74%, respectively. Intact peatlands serve as a globally important carbon sink. However, impacts from climate change, extraction, and drainage increase aerobic decomposition in these ecosystems-shifting their carbon flux from sink to source. A variety of projects are ongoing to restore peatlands to their natural or near-natural states; however, for carbon sequestration, net accumulation of peat relative to decomposition is of primary importance. Molecular analysis techniques provide information on peat growth and degradation trends dating from centuries to millennia. Pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) has been proposed for the rapid characterization of molecular biomarkers in organic matter. This paper reviews plant and microbial biomarkers analyzable via Py-GC/MS for peatland ecosystems, associated challenges, and future applications of the technique. It is noted that far fewer organism-specific biomarkers have been identified via Py-GC/MS for microbial communities in comparison to plant-based studies, and as a topic remains an area greatly needing additional research. In the future, through improved Py-GC/MS-derived fingerprinting of peatland molecular components, periods of degradation and growth could be more precisely distinguished and described, even in profiles where changes in contributing source material are not macroscopically visible. The carbon trading policy seeks to control carbon emissions by putting a price on carbon emissions and establishing a corresponding carbon market for trading. It is a significant move by China to address climate issues and achieve its Carbon Neutrality target. Therefore, assessing the policy effects of carbon trading is fundamental to its implementation nationwide. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces and cities in China from 2008 to 2018, this paper uses the Synthetic Control Method and Differences-in-Differences method to assess the effects of carbon trading policy on achieving Carbon Neutrality. By measuring the net carbon emissions, this research explores the level of Carbon Neutrality in each region. Based on the Five-sphere Integrated Plan (which covers the economy, politics, culture, social and ecological civilization), this research further verifies the impact paths of carbon trading policy on Carbon Neutrality. The results show that: First, carbon trading policy has a significant and sustainable effect on Carbon Neutrality. Second, from the perspective of the Five-sphere Integrated Plan, the carbon trading policy can help to reduce carbon sources and increase carbon sinks by adjusting the industrial structure, coordinating low-carbon policies, promoting cultural dissemination, increasing green space construction, and reducing energy intensity to achieve Carbon Neutrality. Process-related carbon emissions, which cannot be completely eliminated by the improvement of processes and energy structure, are recognized as an enormous challenge for in-depth decarbonization. To accelerate the achievement of carbon neutrality, the concept of 'artificial carbon cycle' is proposed based on the integrated system of process-related carbon emissions from high-emitting industries and CCU technology as a potential pathway towards a sustainable future. This paper conducts a systematic review on the integrated system with the case of China, which is the largest carbon-emitting and manufacturing country, to provide a clearer and more meaningful analysis. Multi-index assessment was used to organize the literature and draw the useful conclusion. Based on literature review, the high-quality carbon sources, reasonable carbon capture approaches and promising chemical products were identified and analyzed. Then the potential and practicability of the integrated system was further summarized and analyzed. Coastal embayments play a vital role in the global carbon cycle either as sources of organic matter to open sea or as carbon sinks due to the accumulation of organic matter in sediments. This paper describes a study of Luoyuan Bay, a typical semi-enclosed embayment with a total area of approximately 227 km 2 in a strong tidal environment. The analysed results indicate that the particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration in suspended particulate matter (SPM) varies from 0.57 mg/L to 1.33 mg/L at the bottom layer (0.5 MAB, meters above bed) and from 0.54 mg/L to 1.25 mg/L at the surface layer (0.5 MBS, meters below surface). The δ 13 C‰ ranges from −25.52‰ to −23.54‰ and exhibits different variations at the surface and bottom layers in spring and neap tides. The POC content in deposited particulate matter (DPM) varies from 0.62% to 2.95%, increasing from spring to neap tide, and the δ 13 C and C/N molar ratio are −25.29‰ ∼ −21.41‰ and 4.18–8.53, respectively. The settling fluxes of POC obtained by sediment trap decrease from 2.25 g/m 2 ·tide during the spring tide to 0.55 g/m 2 ·tide during the neap tide with a mean value of 1.41 g/m 2 ·tide during the observation, whereas the settling flux of SPM decreases from 456.76 g/m 2 ·tide during the spring tide to 37.12 g/m 2 ·tide during the neap tide. Combining the δ 13 C and C/N molar ratio, three end-members are recognized, i.e., freshwater algae and phytoplankton, marine algae and phytoplankton, and kelp-derived detritus. The mean contribution to POC from these three sources is 57.2%, 31.8% and 11.0% in SPM, and 39.9%, 35.0% and 25.1% in DPM, respectively. Massive production and spread application of plastics have led to the accumulation of numerous plastics in the global environment so that the proportion of carbon storage in these polymers also increases. Carbon cycle is of fundamental significance to global climate change and human survival and development. With the continuous increase of microplastics, undoubtedly, there carbons will continue to be introduced into the global carbon cycle. In this paper, the impact of microplastics on microorganisms involved in carbon transformation is reviewed. Micro/nanoplastics affect carbon conversion and carbon cycle by interfering with biological fixation of CO 2 , microbial structure and community, functional enzymes activity, the expression of related genes, and the change of local environment. Micro/nanoplastic abundance, concentration and size could significantly lead to difference in carbon conversion. In addition, plastic pollution can further affect the blue carbon ecosystem reduce its ability to store CO 2 and marine carbon fixation capacity. Nevertheless, problematically, limited information is seriously insufficient in understanding the relevant mechanisms. Accordingly, it is required to further explore the effect of micro/nanoplastics and derived organic carbon on carbon cycle under multiple impacts. Under the influence of global change, migration and transformation of these carbon substances may cause new ecological and environmental problems. Additionally, the relationship between plastic pollution and blue carbon ecosystem and global climate change should be timely established. Significant climate finance gaps exist for small islands in transitioning to net zero, as climate commitments far outweigh the government budget and international financing. To create alignment between resource allocation and climate commitments, a roadmap for strategic and cost-effective decarbonization is of supreme importance. This paper presents a geographic carbon accounting model which incorporates emissions from electricity, transportation, food systems, and human respiration, whilst accounting for the carbon uptake by the terrestrial biosphere in view of identifying high-intensity aggregated emissions estimated in the range of 200–215 ktCO 2e in the coastal and inland urban regions of the remote island of Mauritius. An estimated 4641 ktCO 2e , representing 79.4% of overall emissions, has been observed to originate from buildings, food, and waste systems. About 1150 ktCO 2e , accounting for a share of 19.7%, is derived from transport systems. The study advocates for the enhanced participation of local authorities to better contribute to climate governance, whilst supporting legislative, financial, technological, and behavioural reforms. Despite the relatively low sequestration potential of forests replacing all non-habitable lands, which is estimated at 1002 ktCO 2e and representing about 17.1% of annual net emissions, afforestation programmes are encouraged owing to multiple ecosystem services provided by trees. • A GIS-based Carbon Accounting framework is developed for a remote island. • High-intensity emission hotspots are identified for strategic management responses. • Enhanced participation of local authorities in climate governance is encouraged. • Legislative, financial, technological, and behavioural reforms are proposed. We have built a new 3D Global Climate Model (GCM) to simulate Pluto as observed by New Horizons in 2015. All key processes are parametrized on the basis of theoretical equations, including atmospheric dynamics and transport, turbulence, radiative transfer, molecular conduction, as well as phases changes for N 2 , CH 2 and CO. Pluto’s climate and ice cycles are found to be very sensitive to model parameters and initial states. Nevertheless, a reference simulation is designed by running a fast, reduced version of the GCM with simplified atmospheric transport for 40,000 Earth years to initialize the surface ice distribution and sub-surface temperatures, from which a 28-Earth-year full GCM simulation is performed. Assuming a topographic depression in a Sputnik-planum (SP)-like crater on the anti-Charon hemisphere, a realistic Pluto is obtained, with most N 2 and CO ices accumulated in the crater, methane frost covering both hemispheres except for the equatorial regions, and a surface pressure near 1.1 Pa in 2015 with an increase between 1988 and 2015, as reported from stellar occultations. Temperature profiles are in qualitative agreement with the observations. In particular, a cold atmospheric layer is obtained in the lowest kilometers above Sputnik Planum, as observed by New Horizons’s REX experiment. It is shown to result from the combined effect of the topographic depression and N 2 daytime sublimation. In the reference simulation with surface N 2 ice exclusively present in Sputnik Planum, the global circulation is only forced by radiative heating gradients and remains relatively weak. Surface winds are locally induced by topography slopes and by N 2 condensation and sublimation around Sputnik Planum. However, the circulation can be more intense depending on the exact distribution of surface N 2 frost. This is illustrated in an alternative simulation with N 2 condensing in the South Polar regions and N 2 frost covering latitudes between 35°N and 48°N. A global condensation flow is then created, inducing strong surface winds everywhere, a prograde jet in the southern high latitudes, and an equatorial superrotation likely forced by barotropic instabilities in the southern jet. Using realistic parameters, the GCM predict atmospheric concentrations of CO and CH 4 in good agreement with the observations. N 2 and CO do not condense in the atmosphere, but CH 4 ice clouds can form during daytime at low altitude near the regions covered by N 2 ice (assuming that nucleation is efficient enough). This global climate model can be used to study many aspects of the Pluto environment. The Chinese government has made great efforts in air pollutant reduction and carried out strict regulation policies. Since numerous air pollutants and CO 2 tend to have the same root, source, and process, recent studies argue that environmental regulation may also contribute to reducing carbon emissions. To investigate how various types of environmental regulations affect carbon emissions reduction, this paper constructs the spatial Durbin model and panel threshold model based on provincial panel data in China during 2003–2019. The main findings are as follows: First, China's net carbon emissions show a decreasing trend from east to west, displaying significant spatial agglomeration characteristics. Then, formal and informal environmental regulations have inverted U-shaped impacts on net carbon emissions. The "green paradox" and "reverse emission reduction" effects come into play at different stages. Finally, the threshold model reveals that with the improvement of regional technological innovation levels, the carbon-reducing effect of environmental regulation will increasingly come to the fore. Numerous analyses have been performed to quantitatively link carbon stock change caused by land-use change (CSC-LUC) to consumption of agricultural products, but results differ significantly, even for studies focussing on the same region or product. This is due to the different focuses and interpretations of the links between direct drivers and underlying causes of CSC-LUC, which can be translated into differences in key functions, i.e. specific methods, algorithms and parameters embedded in the analysis. Using the example of Indonesian palm oil production (often associated with CSC-LUC), this paper carries out a meta-analysis of 12 existing studies, determines the different settings for the key functions embedded in consumption-based CSC-LUC studies and discussed their implications for policymaking. It identifies the underlying reasons of adopting different settings within the eight key functions and their advantages and trade-offs. Examples are the way of determining how deforestation is linked to oil palm, and the inclusion of non-agriculture and non-productive drivers in the accounting to weight their roles in CSC-LUC in comparison to palm oil consumption. Following that, the quantitative results from the selected studies were processed and harmonised in terms of unit, allocation mechanism, allocation key and amortisation period. This resulting in ranges of 0.1–3.8 and −0.1–15.7 tCO 2 /t crude palm oil for historical and projection studies, respectively. It was observed that CSC-LUC allocated to palm oil is typically lower when propagating effects and non-agricultural or non-productive drivers were accounted for. Values also greatly differ when marginal and average allocation mechanisms were employed. Conclusively, individual analyses only answer part of the question about CSC-LUC drivers and have their own strengths and weaknesses. Since the context can be very different, using quantitative results from a single study for accounting purposes in policymaking is not recommended. As a major component of temperate steppes in the Eurasian continent, the Mongolian Plateau (MP) plays a pivotal role in the East Asian and global carbon cycles. This paper describes the use of five remote sensing indices derived from satellite data to characterize vegetation cover on MP, namely: gross primary production (GPP), net primary production (NPP), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), leaf area index (LAI) and fractional vegetation cover (FVC). It is found that GPP, NPP, and NDVI exhibit increasing trends, whereas LAI and FVC present decreasing trends on the MP since 1982. The different indices highlight discrepancies in the spatial pattern of vegetation growth, with the greatest increase in the southeast of MP. Only 3.4% of the total land area of MP exhibited consistent trends in the indices (0.1% degradation and 3.3% growth, P < 0.01), with the synchronous change of both LAI and NPP exhibiting higher consistency than that of raw NDVI and NPP. Understanding of the characteristics and status of vegetation change on the MP has far-reaching implications for its ecological protection management, and climate change mitigation. • Five indices were used to quantitatively analyze the vegetation changes on the MP since 1982. • An increasing trend of GPP, NPP and NDVI, and a decreasing trend of LAI and FVC were observed. • Only 3.4% of the MP's area showed consistent trends (0.1% degradation and 3.3% growth, P < 0.01). • The synchronous change of LAI and NPP exhibited higher consistency than that of LAI and NPP. When assessing soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and its climate change (CC) mitigation potential at global scale, the dynamic nature of soil carbon storage and interventions to foster it should be taken into account. Firstly, adoption of SOC-sequestration measures will take time, and reasonably such schemes could only be implemented gradually at large-scale. Secondly, if soils are managed as carbon sinks, then SOC will increase only over a limited time, up to the point when a new SOC equilibrium is reached. This paper combines these two processes and predicts potential SOC sequestration dynamics in agricultural land at global scale and the corresponding CC mitigation potential. Assuming that global governments would agree on a worldwide effort to gradually change land use practices towards turning agricultural soils into carbon sinks starting 2014, the projected 87-year (2014-2100) global SOC sequestration potential of agricultural land ranged between 31 and 64 Gt. This is equal to 1.9-3.9% of the SRES-A2 projected 87-year anthropogenic emissions. SOC sequestration would peak 2032-33, at that time reaching 4.3-8.9% of the projected annual SRES-A2 emission. About 30 years later the sequestration rate would have reduced by half. Thus, SOC sequestration is not a C wedge that could contribute increasingly to mitigating CC. Rather, the mitigation potential is limited, contributing very little to solving the climate problem of the coming decades. However, we deliberately did not elaborate on the importance of maintaining or increasing SOC for sustaining soil health, agro-ecosystem functioning and productivity; an issue of global significance that deserves proper consideration irrespectively of any potential additional sequestration of SOC. These two facts mean that innovation in clean energy technology, rather than mitigating global warming, can lead to a permanently higher temperature path. Frequency and severity of droughts were projected to increase in many regions. However, their effects of temporal dynamics on the terrestrial carbon cycle remain uncertain, and hence deserve further investigation. In this paper, the droughts that occurred in China during 2001–2010 were identified by using the standardized precipitation index (SPI). Standardized anomaly index (SAI), which has been widely employed in reflecting precipitation, was extended to evaluate the anomalies of net primary productivity (NPP). In addition, influences of the droughts on vegetation were explored by examining the temporal dynamics of SAI–NPP along with area-weighted drought intensity at different time scales (1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months). Year-to-year variability of NPP with several factors, including droughts, NDVI, radiation and temperature, was analyzed as well. Consequently, the droughts in the years 2001, 2006 and 2009 were well reconstructed. This indicates that SPI could be applied to the monitoring of the droughts in China during the past decade (2001–2010) effectively. Moreover, strongest correlations between droughts and NPP anomalies were found during or after the drought intensities reached their peak values. In addition, some droughts substantially reduced the countrywide NPP, whereas the others did not. These phenomena can be explained by the regional diversities of drought intensity, drought duration, areal extents of the droughts, as well as the cumulative and lag responses of vegetation to the precipitation deficits. Abstract: Preservation of organic matter in estuarine and coastal areas is an important process in the global carbon cycle. This paper presents bulk δ13C and C/N of organic matter from source to sink in the Pearl River catchment, delta and estuary, and discusses the applicability of δ13C and C/N as indicators for sources of organic matter in deltaic and estuarine sediments. In addition to the 91 surface sediment samples, other materials collected in this study cover the main sources of organic material to estuarine sediment. These are: terrestrial organic matter (TOM), including plants and soil samples from the catchment; estuarine and marine suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) from both summer and winter. Results show that the average δ13C of estuarine surface sediment increases from −25.0 ± 1.3‰ in the freshwater environment to −21.0 ± 0.2‰ in the marine environment, with C/N decreasing from 15.2 ± 3.3 to 6.8 ± 0.2. In the source areas, C3 plants have lower δ13C than C4 plants (−29.0 ± 1.8‰ and −13.1 ± 0.5‰ respectively). δ13C increases from −28.3 ± 0.8‰ in the forest soil to around −24.1‰ in both riverbank soil and mangrove soil due to increasing proportion of C4 grasses. The δ13CPOC increases from −27.6 ± 0.8‰ in the freshwater areas to −22.4 ± 0.5‰ in the marine-brackish-water areas in winter, and ranges between −24.0‰ in freshwater areas and −25.4‰ in brackish-water areas in summer. Comparison of the δ13C and C/N between the sources and sink indicates a weakening TOM and freshwater POC input in the surface sedimentary organic matter seawards, and a strengthening contribution from the marine organic matter. Thus we suggest that bulk organic δ13C and C/N analysis can be used to indicate sources of sedimentary organic matter in estuarine environments. Organic carbon in surface sediments derived from anthropogenic sources such as human waste and organic pollutants from industrial and agricultural activities accounts for less than 10% of the total organic carbon (TOC). Although results also indicate elevated δ13C of sedimentary organic matter due to some agricultural products such as sugarcane, C3 plants are still the dominant vegetation type in this area, and the bulk organic δ13C and C/N is still an effective indicator for sources of organic matter in estuarine sediments. Abstract: In arid and semiarid ecosystems, primary productivity and nutrient cycling are directly related to the amount and seasonal distribution of precipitation. However, depending on morphological, phenological, physiological, and biochemical traits, plants may influence the quality and quantity of organic matter inputs to the soil and thus the biomass and activity of the soil biota responsible for carbon and nitrogen dynamics. In this paper, we review the available knowledge on plant functional traits and their impacts on ecosystem processes such as N and C cycling throughout the Monte Phytogeographical Province. We address the mechanisms of N conservation, the quantity and quality of leaf litterfall and root traits of the dominant plant life forms and their effects on decomposition processes, soil organic matter accretion, and soil-N immobilization and mineralization. We conclude that plant functional traits affect ecosystem processes in the Monte Phytogeographical Province since the chemistry of senesced leaves and root biomass exerts an important control on organic matter decomposition and N availability in soil. Panting protected forests to increase soil carbon sequestration is an effective means of reducing carbon emissions. Soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition is one of the main indicators of soil carbon sequestration. However, SOC decomposition and its influencing factors in protected forests have not been fully characterized, especially in coastal zones. In this paper, coastal zone protected forest stands composed of Quercus acutissima Carruth (QAC), Pinus thunbergii Parl (PTP) and mixed PTP and QAC (MF) were selected as the research objects. The trends of the SOC decomposition rate were characterized by the beta (β) value, and the influencing factors were further explored with structural equation models. The results were as follows: The SOC content decreased from leaf to litter and then to the soil profile at all sites, while the δ13C value increased. The β value ranged from −3.12 to −5.76, with an average of −3.81. The β value was positively correlated with the diversity and richness of soil bacteria, supporting the hypothesis that the increase in δ13C with depth was mainly caused by isotope fractionation in the process of microbial SOC decomposition. The structural equation model showed that nitrogen and the availability of nitrogen have a strong ability to explain the value of β, which indicates that nitrogen-based edaphic variables play an important role in affecting SOC decomposition. The SOC decomposition rate in PTP was higher than that in QAC and MF. The results of this study indicate that the prediction of SOC decomposition based on the β value is suitable for coastal zone protected forests. The incorporation of edaphic variables into global carbon cycle models may enhance the predictions of SOC dynamics in coastal zone protected forests. This paper addresses some issues related to the carbon cycle and its utilization by society. Traditional uses for agriculture, forestry, as a source of fuel and other products, and for pastoral farming, among others, have recently been supplemented by identifying its potential for mitigating the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Through the Kyoto Protocol, carbon has become a commodity and the CO2-absorbing capability of the vegetation and soils an economically valuable asset. The multi-facetted roles of the C cycle and its sensitivity to human activities present a demand for techniques that permit accurate, timely and affordable characterization of the various components of this cycle, especially on land where most human activities take place. Such techniques must satisfy a range of demands in terms of purpose, clients for the information, and biosphere properties. However, if successful, they offer the potential to support monitoring, reporting, policy setting, and management of terrestrial biospheric resources. The context for these requirements and possibilities is illustrated with reference to the China Carbon Sequestration Project and its findings. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is of great importance in the global carbon cycle. Distribution patterns of SOC in various regions of China constitute a nation-wide baseline for studies on soil carbon changes. This paper presents an integrated and multi-level study on SOC stock patterns of China, and presents baseline SOC stock estimates by great administrative regions, river watersheds, soil type regions and ecosystem. The assignment is done by means of a recently completed 1: 1,000,000 scale soil database of China, which is the most detailed and reliable one in China at the present time. SOC densities of 7292 soil profiles collected across China in the middle of the 1980s were calculated and then linked to corresponding polygons in a digital soil map, resulting in a SOC Density Map of China on a 1: 1,000,000 scale, and a 1km×1km grid map. Corresponding maps of administrative regions, river watersheds, soil types (ST), and ecosystems in China were also prepared with an identical resolution and coordinate control points, allowing GIS analyses. Results show that soils in China cover an area of 9.281×106 km2 in total, with a total SOC stock of 89.14Pg (1Pg=1015 g) and a mean SOC density of 96.0tC/ha. Confidence limits of the SOC stock and density in China are estimated as [89.23Pg, 89.08Pg] and [96.143tC/ha, 95.981tC/ha] at 95% probability, respectively. The largest total SOC stock (23.60Pg) is found in South-west China while the highest mean SOC density (181.9tC/ha) is found in north-east China. The total SOC stock and the mean SOC density in the Yangtze river watershed are 21.05Pg and 120.0tC/ha, respectively, while the corresponding figures in theYellow river watershed are 8.46Pg and 104.3tC/ha, respectively. The highest total SOC stocks are found in Inceptisols (34.39Pg) with SOC density of 102.8tC/ha. The lowest and highest mean SOC densities are found on Entisols (28.1tC/ha), and on Histosols (994.728.1tC/ha), repectively. Finally, the total SOC stock in shrub and forest ecosystem classes are 25.55 and 21.50Pg, respectively; the highest mean SOC density (209.9tC/ha) was recorded in the wetland ecosystem class and the lowest (29.0tC/ha) in the desert ecosystem class. Among five forest ecosystem types, Evergreen conifer forest stores the highest SOC stock (6.81Pg), and Deciduous conifer forest shows the highest SOC density (225.9tC/ha). Figures of SOC stocks stratified by Administrative regions, river watersheds, soil types and ecosystem types presented in the study may constitute national-wide baseline for studies of SOC stock changes in various regions in the future. Large scale process-based modeling is a useful approach to estimate distributions of global net primary productivity (NPP). In this paper, in order to validate an existing NPP model with observed data at site level, field experiments were conducted at three sites in northern China. One site is located in Qilian Mountain in Gansu Province, and the other two sites are in Changbaishan Natural Reserve and Dunhua County in Jilin Province. Detailed field experiments are discussed and field data are used to validate the simulated NPP. Remotely sensed images including Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+, 30m spatial resolution in visible and near infrared bands) and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER, 15m spatial resolution in visible and near infrared bands) are used to derive maps of land cover, leaf area index, and biomass. Based on these maps, field measured data, soil texture and daily meteorological data, NPP of these sites are simulated for year 2001 with the boreal ecosystem productivity simulator (BEPS). The NPP in these sites ranges from 80 to 800gCm−2 a−1. The observed NPP agrees well with the modeled NPP. This study suggests that BEPS can be used to estimate NPP in northern China if remotely sensed images of high spatial resolution are available. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper reports the annual carbon (C) balance of China''s forests during 1901–2001 estimated using the Integrated Terrestrial Ecosystem C-budget model (InTEC). Annual carbon source and sink distributions are simulated for the same period using various spatial datasets including land cover and leaf area index (LAI) obtained from remote sensing, soil texture, climate, forest age, and nitrogen deposition. During 1901–1949, China''s forests were a source of 21.0±7.8TgCyr−1 due to disturbances (human activities). Its size increased to 122.3±25.3TgCyr−1 during 1950–1987 due to intensified human activities in the late 1950s, early 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. The forests became large sinks of 176.7±44.8TgCyr−1 during 1988–2001, owing to large-scale plantation and forest regrowth in previously disturbed areas as well as growth stimulation by nondisturbance factors such as climatic warming, atmospheric CO2 fertilization, and N deposition. From 1901 to 2001, China''s forests were a small carbon source of 3.32PgC, about 32.9±22.3TgCyr−1. The overall C balance in biomass from InTEC generally agrees with previous results derived from forest inventories of China''s forests. InTEC results also include C stock variation in soils and are therefore more comprehensive than previous results. The uncertainty in InTEC results is still large, but it can be reduced if a detailed forest age map becomes available. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Seagrasses are highly productive ecosystems and hotspots for biodiversity, providing a plethora of benefits to the environment and to people. Their value in sequestering and storing carbon is increasingly being recognised, as the world searches for ways to mitigate the effects and slow the pace of climate change. However, many uncertainties remain, with basic information such as average carbon stocks, variability and species-specific differences missing for many regions. This study evaluates, for the first time, the carbon storage capacity of Zostera noltii and Zostera marina from intertidal seagrass meadows in Scotland. Sediment carbon stocks in the top 50 cm from vegetated and reference unvegetated plots were quantified at 10 estuaries distributed along the Scottish east and west coasts. The organic carbon stocks in the top 50 cm of the seagrass sediment ranged from a minimum of 14.94 Mg C ha−1 at the Moray Firth to a maximum of 105.72 Mg C ha−1 at the Firth of Forth, with a mean (±SD) of 54.79 ± 35.02 Mg C ha−1 across the 10 estuaries sampled. Moreover, seagrass areas showed enhanced carbon storage compared to reference unvegetated ones, however this was highly variable across depth, and among sites and estuaries. 4-Hydroxybenzoate 3-hydroxylase (PHBH) is the most extensively studied group A flavoprotein monooxygenase (FPMO). PHBH is almost exclusively found in prokaryotes, where its induction, usually as a consequence of lignin degradation, results in the regioselective formation of protocatechuate, one of the central intermediates in the global carbon cycle. In this contribution we introduce several less known FAD-dependent 4-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylases. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the enzymes discussed here reside in distinct clades of the group A FPMO family, indicating their separate divergence from a common ancestor. Protein homology modelling revealed that the fungal 4-hydroxybenzoate 3-hydroxylase PhhA is structurally related to phenol hydroxylase (PHHY) and 3-hydroxybenzoate 4-hydroxylase (3HB4H). 4-Hydroxybenzoate 1-hydroxylase (4HB1H) from yeast catalyzes an oxidative decarboxylation reaction and is structurally similar to 3-hydroxybenzoate 6-hydroxylase (3HB6H), salicylate hydroxylase (SALH) and 6-hydroxynicotinate 3-monooxygenase (6HNMO). Genome mining suggests that the 4HB1H activity is widespread in the fungal kingdom and might be responsible for the oxidative decarboxylation of vanillate, an import intermediate in lignin degradation. 4-Hydroxybenzoyl-CoA 1-hydroxylase (PhgA) catalyzes an intramolecular migration reaction (NIH shift) during the three-step conversion of 4-hydroxybenzoate to gentisate in certain Bacillus species. PhgA is phylogenetically related to 4-hydroxyphenylacetate 1-hydroxylase (4HPA1H). In summary, this paper shines light on the natural diversity of group A FPMOs that are involved in the aerobic microbial catabolism of 4-hydroxybenzoate. Climate change is identified as a major threat to wetlands. Altered hydrology and rising temperature can change the biogeochemistry and function of a wetland to the degree that some important services might be turned into disservices. This means that they will, for example, no longer provide a water purification service and adversely they may start to decompose and release nutrients to the surface water. Moreover, a higher rate of decomposition than primary production (photosynthesis) may lead to a shift of their function from being a sink of carbon to a source. This review paper assesses the potential response of natural wetlands (peatlands) and constructed wetlands to climate change in terms of gas emission and nutrients release. In addition, the impact of key climatic factors such as temperature and water availability on wetlands has been reviewed. The authors identified the methodological gaps and weaknesses in the literature and then introduced a new framework for conducting a comprehensive mesocosm experiment to address the existing gaps in literature to support future climate change research on wetland ecosystems. In the future, higher temperatures resulting in drought might shift the role of both constructed wetland and peatland from a sink to a source of carbon. However, higher temperatures accompanied by more precipitation can promote photosynthesis to a degree that might exceed the respiration and maintain the carbon sink role of the wetland. There might be a critical water level at which the wetland can preserve most of its services. In order to find that level, a study of the key factors of climate change and their interactions using an appropriate experimental method is necessary. Some contradictory results of past experiments can be associated with different methodologies, designs, time periods, climates, and natural variability. Hence a long-term simulation of climate change for wetlands according to the proposed framework is recommended. This framework provides relatively more accurate and realistic simulations, valid comparative results, comprehensive understanding and supports coordination between researchers. This can help to find a sustainable management strategy for wetlands to be resilient to climate change. Coastal wetlands play an increasingly important role in regulating greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes and thus affecting climate change. However, the overall magnitude, trend, and environmental drivers of GHG fluxes in these wetlands of China remain uncertain. Herein, we synthesized data from 70 publications involving 187 field observations to identify patterns and drivers of GHG fluxes across coastal wetlands in China. Average methane (CH 4), nitrous oxide (N 2 O) fluxes, and carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions (ecosystem respiration) across coastal wetlands were estimated as 2.20±0.31 mg·m-2·h-1, 16.44±2.96 μg·m-2·h-1, and 388.76±42.28 mg·m-2·h-1, respectively. GHG emissions varied with tidal inundation, where CH 4 and CO 2 emissions during tidal inundation were lower than during ebbing. CH 4 and CO 2 emissions from wetlands decreased linearly with increasing latitude, while N 2 O did not. CH 4 fluxes were positively related to air temperature and aboveground biomass, and CO 2 emissions were positively related to soil organic carbon. N 2 O fluxes were lower with increasing soil pH, and CH 4 and CO 2 emissions were greater with increasing soil moisture. Based on the results of sustained-flux global warming potential and sustained-flux global cooling potential models, our paper indicate that the fluxes of CH 4 and N 2 O in coastal wetlands have a positive feedback to global warming, which is mainly driven by the CH 4 emission. Our synthesis improved understanding of the roles of coastal wetlands in the ecosystem C cycle under global change. We suggest that long-term field observations of GHG fluxes across a wider range of spatiotemporal scales are urgently required to improve the prediction accuracy in GHG fluxes and the assessment of net GHG balance and its contribution to the GWP of coastal wetlands. Terrestrial ecosystems have received considerable attention as a significant sink for organic carbon at regional to global scales. Previous studies were focused on assessment and quantification of carbon sinks for one ecotype, and few have worked on the interconnection of terrestrial sinks. In this paper, we synthesized the data from China's second national soil survey and direct measurements from 54 lakes. Meanwhile, we investigated the controlling factors of carbon accumulation dynamics in soils and lakes. Results showed varied spatial distribution of soil and lake organic carbon in different regions, and three storage modes were found. The storage mode of watershed collection was observed in the region of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, while the northeast China and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau revealed another storage mode of autochthonous deposition, and the mode of human activities affection was represented by the East Plain and Mongolia-Xinjiang Plateau. The spatial difference throughout China was regulated by various climate patterns, geological conditions and anthropogenic interference.
