This article examines the combination of contemporary social and cultural forces that collectively supported the founding of Boston Public Library, the first truly public library in the U.S. The existing literature on the founding of the library can pretty much be divided into two camps: those who see the establishment of the library as a humanistic continuation of The Flowering of New England and those who see the library's founding as an attempt by the elite to control the lower classes. The library movement was successful in New England in general and in Boston, Massachusetts in particular for a number of reasons; two of them were geography and settlement patterns. While some library and social historians have gone so far as to say that the public library was established by authoritarian-elitists from the upper strata of U.S. society; that these men had little faith in the common people; and that their activities were motivated by an unbounded concern for what they viewed to be the general instability of national life, the author submits that it is possible for the same person to have several motivations for the same beliefs and actions.
