Designing guidance mechanisms using bistable mechanisms with two stable positions is a common low-power solution for maintaining the guidance position without continuous external energy input. However, the coupling between kinematics and statics in compliant bistable mechanisms poses a challenge for their application in mechanism synthesis. To address this issue, this paper introduces the pole similarity transformation theory into the synthesis of compliant mechanisms and proposes a general synthesis method for planar serial-based compliant bistable mechanisms. This method models the compliant mechanism using the strain energy method and analyzes the bistable characteristics of the mechanism within its motion plane using the saddle point searching method. By doing so, the proposed method can identify stable positions without predetermined motion trajectories, making it more suitable for designing compliant bistable mechanisms with general planar motion. Additionally, this method utilizes the pole map to describe the stable positions of the rigid components in the compliant mechanism and establishes an information database for compliant bistable mechanisms. Through leveraging the pole similarity transformation, the pole maps of the mechanisms in the information database are matched with the pole map of the motion task, thus achieving the synthesis of planar serial-based compliant bistable mechanisms for the rigid-body guidance problem. In industrial processes involving both heat and mass transfer, the enthalpy or total energy difference, not the temperature difference, is a more comprehensive driving-force potential for the design of heat exchanger systems, such as cooling towers. However, current enthalpy methods based on the Merkel integral require numerical integration with implied linear distributions of water temperature. If the cooling range of the cooling tower is relatively small, the outcome of the integration may carry little error. However, for a large cooling range and a substantially increased temperature, the error involved may be significant. Like log-mean temperature difference, a log-mean enthalpy difference method may require only the inlet and outlet conditions without prior knowledge of the enthalpy distributions of the fluids within the heat exchanger. The known Berman's enthalpy difference method requires correction factors and was derived based on the linearization of the interfacial enthalpy and the enthalpy difference between the interfacial moist air and the bulk moist air without underlying interpretation to demonstrate that the method could be broadly used. In this paper, an equivalent enthalpy model is proposed, and the log-mean enthalpy difference is derived without retaining model assumptions. The derived method is compared with some results of Merkel's method from literature with excellent agreement. Thus, the work in this paper would open up the possibility for broad uses of the log-mean enthalpy difference method for many industrial processes involving both heat and mass transfer. Cooled spray (CS) technology passively reduces particulate matter (PM) emissions from diesel engines compared to non-CS-equipped diesel engines. CS inserts are mounted near the injector nozzle and control mixing so that the fuel and air can premix while limiting combustion near fuel-rich zones, thereby reducing the formation of particulate matter. CS components contain no moving parts and could be installed as a retrofit or built into new engines. However, CS technology is early in its development, and further investigations are needed to understand the overall performance implications and practicality of the technology. In this paper, we investigate several important aspects of CS, providing a clearer picture of some challenges and potential benefits of CS. Two alignment techniques are used to characterize measurement ease and bias, namely, an optical alignment and spray-plug impact alignment. While the optical technique facilitates alignment more easily, a bias was measured between the optical and spray-plug techniques, suggesting the optical technique may have insufficient accuracy without additional corrections. We also evaluate the engine performance of a well-aligned and poorly aligned CS insert, compared to the baseline configuration. The poorly aligned insert shows slower combustion than the baseline and mixed overall performance. However, the well-aligned insert shows faster combustion than the baseline and PM emission reduction at most operating conditions, with some conditions showing PM reduction up to 80%. Liquid fueled gas turbines are likely to remain a dominant force in aviation propulsion for the foreseeable future, and therefore understanding the atomization process is key to meeting future emissions and performance legislation. To make experiments and simulations possible, simplified geometry and boundary conditions are often used, for example, simulations of primary atomization often use a fixed film height and velocity. This paper aims to quantify the effect of a fully developed unsteady film on the atomization process. A custom Coupled Level Set & Volume of Fluid (CLSVOF) solver with adaptive meshing built in OpenFOAM v9 is used. A simulation of the atomization process in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology atomization experiment (Warncke et al., 2017, "Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Primary Breakup of an Airblasted Liquid Sheet," Int. J. Multiphase Flow, 91, pp. 208-224) is presented. A precursor simulation of the film development is used to provide accurate, temporally and spatially resolved inlet boundary conditions. These results are compared to previous CLSVOF simulations from Wetherell et al. (2020, "Coupled Level Set Volume of Fluid Simulations of Prefilming Airblast Atomization With Adaptive Meshing," ASME Paper No. GT2020-14213)" using traditional boundary conditions. The unsteady film has doubled the modal ligament length and widened the distribution, and is now in better agreement with experimental measurements. A clear correlation in both time and space is observed between the film, atomization process, and spray. The sauter mean diameter (SMD) is significantly increased, again giving better agreement with the experiment. A discussion of extracting statistical descriptions of the spray is given, outlining the unfeasible computational cost required to converge droplet diameter distributions and other high order statistics for a case such as this. In Part I, a companion paper of the two-part article, a subsonic turbine stage and a transonic one conditioned at the same Reynolds number, flow coefficient, loading coefficient and reaction, but two different exit Mach numbers are designed to provide a direct contrast between a high-subsonic and a transonic flow conditioning for rotor blade squealer tips. In this paper as Part II, further analyses are carried out to address the main issues of interest arising from Part I: first, to identify the driving flow physical mechanisms for the contrasting aerodynamic efficiency sensitivities of the two stages; second to seek a more suitable heat transfer objective function for the tip aerothermal design optimization, given the seemingly strong conflicts among those conventionally adopted heat transfer objective functions. Two counter-rotating tip vortical structures, the pressure side vortex (PSV) and the casing-driven cavity vortex (CCV), are shown to impact the aero-performance differently between the two stages. For the subsonic stage, the leakage flow is strongly affected by a stronger residual PSV at the squealer cavity exit. For the transonic stage however, the tip choking in limiting the over tip leakage (OTL) mass flow and favorable pressure gradient in a transonic flow over a separation bubble led to a much stronger and more persistent CCV and thus lower aero-effectiveness of squealer tip for the transonic stage. The two vortices also show major heat transfer signatures on the cavity surfaces by impingement. For the PSV, the impingement impact is mainly on the cavity floor. For the CCV, on the other hand, its impact is mainly on the inner side-wall of the suction side rim. The latter is found to be mainly responsible for the overall linear variations of the heat load with the squealer height. Again, the relative strength between PSV and CCV serves as an effective differentiator in the heat transfer performance. The stronger and more persistent CCV in the transonic stage results in a strong signature on a large portion of the suction side cavity inner sidewall, thus a much higher increment in heat transfer with the squealer height than that for the subsonic stage. In seeking to establish a more consistent heat transfer objective function for combined aerothermal design and optimization, a coolability weighted nonuniformity parameter is proposed to integrate the local heat transfer and the coolability. The proposed objective function is shown to lead to consistent Pareto fronts for the combined aerothermal performance sensitivities, particularly for the present cases with strong heat transfer nonuniformity which are particularly challenging to those conventional treatments as shown in Part I. This paper presents a modular approach to motion planning with provable stability guarantees for robots that move through changing environments via periodic locomotion behaviors. We focus on dynamic walkers as a paradigm for such systems, although the tools developed in this paper can be used to support general compositional approaches to robot motion planning with dynamic movement primitives (DMPs). By formulating the planning process as a switching system with multiple equilibria (SSME), we prove that the system's evolution remains within explicitly characterized trapping regions in the state space under suitable constraints on the frequency of switching among the DMPs. These conditions encapsulate the low-level stability limitations in a form that can be easily communicated to the planner. Furthermore, we show how the available primitives can be safely composed online in a receding horizon manner to enable the robot to react to moving obstacles. The proposed framework can be applied in a wide class of 3D bipedal walking models, and offers a modular approach for integrating readily available low-level locomotion control and high-level planning methods. This paper proposes a general kinematic-based design method for optimizing the side-mounted leg mechanism of BJTUBOT, a novel multi-mission quadrupedal Earth rover. The focus issue lies in designing structural improvements that not only enhance its kinematic performance but also prevent singularity, all while meeting the demands for miniaturization and lightweight without deviating from the original leg design concept. To solve this issue, a novel 3-UPRU&PPRR mechanism is envisaged based on the original configuration. Around the unique structural features of this mechanism, its inverse kinematic solution and Jacobian matrix are calculated, and a coupled motion relation between a key limb and its moving platform (MP) is presented. In order to achieve singularity avoidance, some typical singularity configurations based on line geometry analysis are given. In accordance with this result, an initial configuration for multi-objective dimensional optimization is presented. To further enhance its kinematic performance, we introduce the use of the GCI (global conditional index) performance at extreme positions as one of the optimization criteria based on the NSGA-II (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm) algorithm, and directly measuring the crowding distance using the position vector of the U (universal) joints on the moving platform. This optimized mechanism prototype is demonstrated in a single-leg Adams simulation, which exhibits good velocity mapping effects and displacement accuracy. Finally, a new BJTUBOT prototype was constructed based on the optimized leg, and its flexibility was tested with various classical forms of motions. Global issues such as climate change, environmental pollution, and conservation of resources require manufacturers of internal combustion engines (ICE) to achieve substantially reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants as well as increased engine efficiency and durability. Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance approaches for sliding bearings in ICEs are key tools for increasing engine durability and saving resources by exploiting more of the useful lifetime of a bearing while avoiding critical engine operation caused by bearing wear and failure. These approaches require appropriate measurement technology capable of acquiring informative parameters that reflect the current condition of the bearings while withstanding the high temperatures and mechanical loads encountered inside the engine and accommodating spatial constraints. This paper deals with research work related to advanced sensor technology that is highly integrated into sliding bearings so that information is obtained nearly directly from relevant areas such as the bearing running layer and the lubrication gap. An isolated, sputtered sensor layer with a thickness of a few micrometers is employed in combination with a laser structuring process to form the desired thin film sensor structure below the bearing running surface. While several measurement parameters and corresponding sensor types are conceivable, this paper focuses on temperature and strain measurements that rely on a change in the electrical resistance of the sensor layer material. Promising sensor layouts and positions targeted for use in condition monitoring applications in ICEs are elaborated in detail. Developments and challenges in implementing the sensor technology concept--in particular with regard to the process of manufacturing the sensor as well as the wire contacting--are outlined in depth. The paper concludes by presenting measurement results obtained with this sensor technology at lab scale as well as an outlook toward implementing the instrumented bearings in ICEs. This paper outlines the update of a turbomachinery course to cover three-dimensional (3D) aerodynamics using a Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes solver. Prior to the activities outlined in this paper, the course was taught in a conventional way with a series of lectures and a timed, written, open book examination in a formal exam setting. Students were equipped with a calculator and set of notes including correlations from Howell and Soderberg. The students had around 1 h to answer the turbomachinery question, which was revealed to them only when they opened the paper at the start of the exam. This limited the depth of any aerodynamic problem they could get through and so they were restricted to simple design or analysis exercises. The genesis of the course update was the release in 2017 of "MULTALL OPEN" (Denton, J. D., 2017, "Multall: An Open Source, Computational Fluid Dynamics Based, Turbomachinery Design System," ASME J. Turbomach., 139(12), p. 121001), a freely available turbomachinery design system, and this was adopted as the course software--although other software choices were considered. Students now produce two turbomachinery designs during the course. These are both based on the J85 turbojet--largely to keep cycle calculations to a minimum but it was also important to ensure that students recognize that they were completing a real engineering task. The first task was a 3D aerodynamic design of multistage turbine, which includes compressible flow, tip clearance, and stacking techniques such as lean or sweep. The second task was a midspan (two-dimensional) compressor design. The exact cycle conditions were varied each year to explore design scenarios such as an increase in firing temperature. Assessment was by means of a short report where the best students report on their design choices, provide critical analysis of the design using appropriate postprocessing techniques, and compare their designs to the state of the art in the wider literature. As well as describing the successes and challenges of the update to 3D design methods the paper provides some guidance for educators thinking about adopting a similar approach. The primary goal of the paper is to monitor the health of the spindle in machine tools to ensure optimal performance and reduce costly downtimes. Spindle health monitoring is essential to detect wear and cracks in spindle bearings, which can be challenging due to their gradual development and hidden locations. The proposed approach combines physics-based modeling and data-driven techniques to monitor spindle health effectively. In Part I and Part II of the paper, mathematical models of bearing faults and spindle imbalance are integrated into the digital model of the spindle. This allows for simulating the operation of the spindle both with and without faults. The integration of fault models enables the generation of vibrations at sensor locations along the spindle shaft. The generated vibration data from the physics-based model are used to train a recurrent neural network-based (RNN) fault detection algorithm. The RNN learns from the labeled vibration spectra to identify different fault conditions. Bayesian optimization is used to automatically tune the hyperparameters governing the accuracy and efficiency of the learning models during the training process. The RNN classifiers are further fine-tuned using a small set of experimentally collected data for the generalization of the model on real-world data. Once the RNN classifier is trained, it can distinguish between different types of damage and identify their specific locations on the spindle assembly. The proposed algorithms achieved an accuracy of 98.43% on experimental data sets that were not used in training the network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mathematical modeling of bearing faults, worn tool holder taper contact interface, and unbalance are presented and integrated into a digital dynamic model of spindles in Part I of this paper. These faults lead to changes in preload and dynamic stiffness over time, consequently resulting in observable vibrations. This paper predicts the vibrations of a spindle at a particular measurement location by simulating the presence of a specific fault or multiple faults during spindle rotation. The vibration spectra generated by the digital spindle model at the spindle speed and its harmonics, the changes in the natural frequencies, and dynamic stiffnesses are correlated to faults with experimental validations. The simulated vibration spectrums are later used in training an artificial neural network for fault condition monitoring presented in Part III of the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new method is presented for the design of kinematotropic linkages based on 2-DOF kinematic chains that generate more than one surface. As an example of the proposed method, a kinematotropic linkage is obtained by studying a special case of the Bohemian dome which has two different parametrizations constructed by translation of circles and, therefore, two different hybrid kinematic chains can be designed to generate the same Bohemian dome. Each of these hybrid kinematic chains can generate two different surfaces and, thus, can be used in the proposed method. Parametrizations for the secondary surfaces are then obtained and studied. A total of 27 motion branches are found in the configuration space of this kinematotropic linkage. The singularities in the configuration space are further determined using the properties of the surfaces. The resultant linkage offers an explanation of Wholhart's queer-square linkage other than its original paper folding. As part of the analysis of this example, the relationship between the properties of self-intersections in generated surfaces and the configuration space of the generator linkage is studied for the first time, leading to a description of motion branches related to self-intersections of generated surfaces. During electrochemical machining (ECM) of metals, the electrolyte gets polluted by heavy metal ions and compounds. This creates crucial process control problems due to variation in electrical conductivity and is an environmental threat if the solution is discharged without treatment. In this study, an economical, simple multistep treatment system based on ion-exchange was developed to remove metal ions from the polluted electrolyte. We specifically looked at the electrolytic discharge from ECM of copper pieces, which is widely used in biomedical and electronic applications. Three different ion-exchange media were used: (1) a natural zeolite, (2) a special type of adsorbent quantitative filter paper, and (3) a polymer-based synthetic cation-holder resin (Lewatit TP 207) that works well with copper ions. Optimization studies for pH and contact time showed the following: (1) by using zeolite alone, and after 2 h of mixing, 43.2% of Cu2+ could be removed; (2) by using the filter paper alone, and after three times of filtration, 90% of Cu2+ could be removed; and (3) by using Lewatit TP 207 alone, 100% of Cu2+ could be removed. While Lewatit TP 207 allowed for 100% removal of Cu2+, its use alone is costly and troublesome due to constraints from service life and multistep regeneration and conditioning with strong acids and bases, respectively. The most simple and economical scheme for removal of Cu2+ and recycling the electrolyte for reuse was the three-step zeolite-filter-resin treatment system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Part II. Presents a study which analyzed the flutter phenomena of flexible thin sheets such as paper swept by wind for a range of mass ratios. Method; Results; Conclusion.

Obtaining the desired strip profile is of paramount importance in cold rolling. The final strip profile depends on several parameters of the plants including crown and taper profiles and segmented backup roll positions. This paper aims to present a newly developed combined finite element-analytical model of the rolling mill able to model not only the roll cluster but also the mill housing and backup bearings deformations. This makes the proposed model especially suitable to simulate cluster-type rolling mills. The model exploits a modified elastic foundation formulation for a precise computation of the contact forces between rolls, taking into account rolls' crown and taper. A reduced stiffness matrix approach is implemented for accurate mill housing modeling. A full 3D finite element model of the rolling mill and experimental data are used for the validation of the presented model. By exploiting the validated model, the paper shows that the deformation of supporting bearings and mill housing plays a crucial role in the strip profile calculation and should be included in any cluster-type roll mill model.
