In such a scenario, there is a strong need to design appropriate classical optimization schemes that deal efficiently with VQCs and pave the way for quantum advantage in machine learning. Among possible optimization schemes, those based on evolutionary computation are finding increasing interest, given the unconventional and nonanalytical nature of the problem to be solved. In this paper, we propose a control framework for intelligent surgical robots under the Remote Center of Motion (RCM). The goal of a surgical robot is to assist surgeons in performing complex surgeries. RCM constraint implies that the surgical tip attached to the end-effector of the surgical robot does not slide away from the point of the incision while performing surgery. Implementation of a control algorithm to comply with RCM constraints is a complicated task because of the nonlinear model of the surgical robots and stringent conditions of accuracy imposed by the patient's safety. This paper proposes an optimization-driven approach to perform the surgical maneuver under RCM constraints. We then applied a bio-inspired optimization algorithm to solve the problem efficiently. For testing the performance of ZNNBAS, we used MATLAB to simulate a surgical procedure. A 7-DOF surgical robot (KUKA LBR IIWA 7) was used as a test bench for running the simulations. The simulation results show that the ZNNBAS is comparable with BAS, PSO, and GA and efficiently and robustly performed the task commanded maneuvers while enforcing the RCM constraints. One goal of the SPARTE code is to be used as a guide to select the experiments design parameters for future CABRI power transients. This paper focuses on methods for optimizing a specific CABRI power transient (FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) ≃30 ms, Deposited energy ≃130 MJ) using the target characteristics of the pulse. The selection of a method may help the experimentalists and the operation team to minimize the number of “white” power transients to perform before the final test with the fuel sample. The optimization can lead to different results, that can be ranked according to their projected uncertainties. Different optimization methods are tested and compared in this paper. The Subplex method based on reiterations of the Nelder-Mead algorithm (simplex method) was selected for its high precision. Indeed, the CABRI power transients are not completely reproducible and present some uncertainties linked to the test parameters. This article focuses on the uncertainties propagation in order to identify and select the parameters that minimize the output uncertainties. This paper proposes a solution for multiple-impulse orbital maneuvers near circular orbits for special cases where orbital observations are not globally available and the spacecraft is being observed through a limited window from a ground or a space-based station. The current study is particularly useful for small private launching companies with limited access to global observations around the Earth and for orbital maneuvers around other planets for which the orbital observations are limited to the in situ equipment. An appropriate cost function is introduced for the sake of minimizing the total control/impulse effort as well as the orbital uncertainty. It is subsequently proved that for a circle-to-circle maneuver, the optimization problem is quasi-convex with respect to the design variables. For near circular trajectories the same cost function is minimized via a gradient based optimization algorithm in order to provide a sub-optimal solution that is efficient both with respect to energy effort and orbital uncertainty. As a relevant case study, a four-impulse orbital maneuver between circular orbits under Mars gravitation is simulated and analyzed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is a well-known meta-heuristic optimization algorithm. SCA has received much attention in various optimization fields due to its simple structure and excellent optimization capabilities. However, the dimension of objective function also increases with the increasing complexity of optimization tasks. This makes the original SCA appear to have insufficient optimization capability and likely to fall into premature convergence. A multi-mechanism acting variant of SCA, called ARSCA, is proposed to address the above deficiencies. ARSCA is an enhanced SCA algorithm based on the adaptive quadratic interpolation mechanism (AQIM) and Rounding mechanism (RM). RM enables a more balanced state between exploration and exploitation of the ARSCA. AQIM enhances local exploitation capabilities. To verify the performance of ARSCA, we compared ARSCA with some advanced traditional optimization algorithms and variants of algorithms for 30 consecutive benchmark functions of IEEE CEC2014. In addition, ARSCA was applied to 6 constrained engineering optimization problems. These six algorithms include the tension–compression spring design problem, the welded beam design problem, the pressure vessel design problem, the I-beam design problem, the speed reducer design problem, and the three-bar design problem. Experimental results show that ARSCA outperforms its competitors in both the solution quality and the ability to jump out of the local optimum. The purpose of the paper is to review the practice of the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ) in Green Supply Chain (GSC) problems and to identify new research challenges focusing on the question: “To what extent is it necessary to evolve TRIZ tools, methods and theoretical grounding for addressing GSC inventive problems?” First, a review of the past contributions of TRIZ based methods to GSC problem resolution is presented. As the result of the papers review did not provide a comprehensive understanding of the limitations and areas of potential application of TRIZ in GSC, three experiments were conducted to complete the literature review, in order to provide a more comprehensive answer to the posed question and identify research challenges. The experiments addressing GSC problems were also conducted to explore to what extent the more mature meta-methods of classical TRIZ, namely ARIZ 85 A, C and the related sub-methods, can be used as in GSM problems. The examples were chosen to explore types of GSC problems that were not yet addressed with TRIZ. The experiment results highlight limitations on the use of the TRIZ in GSC inventive problems, which were not mentioned in the GSC literature. Moreover it highlights the limitation of using the more mature meta-methods of TRIZ (ARIZ 85A and ARIZ 85C) when the conflict to overcome contains more than two evaluation parameters and one action parameter. Finally, research challenges to overcome the limitations and to improve the use of TRIZ in GSC inventive problems are stated. Among them, methods for quickly establishing the existence of classical TRIZ contradictions or for informing the problem solver when no TRIZ contradictions are present in a given inventive problem in GSC should be proposed. Such methods would permit determining whether ARIZ 85C could be used and avoid a long and fruitless search for a system of contradictions. Determination of the creep model parameters is a challenging task particularly when a non-linear elastic visco-plastic (EVP) model is adopted, mainly due to the limited test duration as well as the assumption of the reference time. Therefore, this paper presents an innovative numerical solution to find the EVP model parameters applying the trustregion reflective least square optimization algorithm. The developed approach involves several available laboratory consolidation test results in the optimization procedure with the adopted commencing time to creep as a unit of time. In this paper, the laboratory results of Ottawa clay were employed to demonstrate the limitation of the recent method to obtain model parameters. Furthermore, the developed method is verified against Skå-Edeby clay in the laboratory conditions. The EVP model parameters are obtained by applying the developed method to the available laboratory consolidation results of clay samples. The analysis results of vertical strains and excess pore water pressures demonstrate that the developed method can be a feasible tool to estimate the settlement properties of clays. The Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is a new advanced algorithm that is based on the humpback whale chasing process. The main problem addressed by Whale Optimization Algorithm, similar to other metaheuristic algorithms, is premature convergence. This paper introduces the Sine Cosine Algorithm in the Whale Optimization Algorithm optimization process to enhance global convergence and to improve enactment. The proposed algorithm, called WOA-SCA, has local optima evasion of Whale Optimization Algorithm and high capability to increase the exploration. The implementation of the proposed WOA-SCA algorithm is investigated through a series of tests on common benchmark test functions, with the results compared to those of six alternative algorithms. The results of the investigations show that the proposed WOA-SCA algorithm works better in concert with the outputs of the benchmark functions. Also, to validate the proficiencies of the WOA-SCA, it has been used to resolve the real-world problem of Facial Emotion Recognition (FER). The field of facial emotion recognition is a fascinating new area of research that gives us the ability to identify the human face's expression in natural settings. A large part of the standard methodologies certainly does not indicate the looks because the attitudes depend on the human face sections' behaviors. The paper proposes the efficient Facial Emotion Recognition method using MultiSVNNN based on WOA-SCA (the proposed WOA-SCA based Multi-Support Vector Neural Network). Using the ADFES dataset for the disgust expression, our results demonstrate that the proposed work yields average emotion recognition accuracy of 98% associated to 80% and 96% based on BBPSO and MFOPSO, respectively. Abstract Evolutionary Computation (EC) algorithms have been proposed as stochastic methods to solve complex optimization problems. The design of EC methods typically involves the construction of empirical operators based on abstractions of animal behaviors or physical and biological phenomena. Through its operators, every EC approach proposes a particular solution to the exploration-exploitation balance which is currently considered an unsolved problem within EC literature. On the other hand, multi-agent systems have been utilized as intelligent, cooperative and self-organized structures where the synergy of simple rules creates complex interactions among agents. In this paper, a novel EC algorithm called Neighborhood-based Consensus for Continuous Optimization (NCCO) is presented. NCCO is based on typical processes present in multi-agent systems, such as local consensus formulations and reactive responses. These operations are conducted by using appropriate operators that are applied in each evolutionary stage. A traditional EC algorithm considers in its operation the application of every operator without examining its final impact in the searching process. In contrast to other EC techniques, the proposed method uses additional operators to avoid the undesirable effects produced by the over-exploitation or suboptimal exploration of conventional operations. In order to illustrate the performance and accuracy of the proposed NCCO approach, it is compared to several well-known, state-of-the-art algorithms over a set of benchmark functions and real-world design applications. In this paper, an integrated coal gasification combined cycle system for the production of hydrogen and electricity is optimized in terms of energy and exergy efficiencies, and the amount and cost of the produced hydrogen and electricity. The integrated system is optimized by focusing on the conversion process of coal to syngas. A novel optimization process is developed which integrates an artificial neural network with a genetic algorithm. The gasification system is modeled and simulated with Aspen Plus for large ranges of operating conditions, where the artificial neural network method is used to represent the simulation results mathematically. The mathematical model is then optimized using a genetic algorithm method. The optimization demonstrates that the lower is the grade of coal of the three considered coals, the less expensive is the hydrogen and electricity that can be produced by the considered integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) system. Automated path planning is an important tool for the automation and optimization of field operations. It can provide the waypoints required for guidance, navigation and control of agricultural robots and autonomous tractors throughout the execution of these field operations. Typical field operations are repetitively required nearly every cropping season and therefore it should be carried out in a manner that maximizes the yield and minimizes operational cost, time and environmental impact taking into account the topographic land features. Current 3D terrain field coverage path planning algorithms are simply 2D coverage path planning projected into 3D through field terrain represented by the field’s Digital Elevation Model (DEM). When projecting 2D coverage plan into its 3D counterpart, the actual distance between adjacent paths on the topographic surface either increases or decreases, and consequently there might be skips or overlaps between adjacent paths on the slopes. In addition, when the machine rolls on slopes the effective width of the implement decreases by a similar amount to double this error and complicates the problem. Skips and overlaps can lead to an inefficient use of land and resources. In this paper, a numerical approach to estimate the total skip/overlap areas is developed and applied to determine the optimum-driving angle that minimizes this impact. Also, a novel side-to-side 3D coverage path planning approach, which ensures zero skips/overlaps regardless of the topographical nature of the field terrain, is developed. The approaches developed in this paper are tested and validated using a hypothetical test field of a tailored terrain and a real experimental field of uneven terrain nature. The proposed approaches illustrated that a significant percentage of uncovered area could be saved if appropriate driving angle is chosen and if a side-to-side 3D coverage is used. In this paper a novel nature-inspired optimization paradigm is proposed called Moth-Flame Optimization (MFO) algorithm. The main inspiration of this optimizer is the navigation method of moths in nature called transverse orientation. Moths fly in night by maintaining a fixed angle with respect to the moon, a very effective mechanism for travelling in a straight line for long distances. However, these fancy insects are trapped in a useless/deadly spiral path around artificial lights. This paper mathematically models this behaviour to perform optimization. The MFO algorithm is compared with other well-known nature-inspired algorithms on 29 benchmark and 7 real engineering problems. The statistical results on the benchmark functions show that this algorithm is able to provide very promising and competitive results. Additionally, the results of the real problems demonstrate the merits of this algorithm in solving challenging problems with constrained and unknown search spaces. The paper also considers the application of the proposed algorithm in the field of marine propeller design to further investigate its effectiveness in practice. The paper deals with the problem of power quality and its solution. Passive or active compensators are usually used to reduce distortions of voltage and current waveforms. Active power filters seem to be the best choice if the effect of compensation is the only criterion. However, the financial cost of such a solution put the potential investors off. The paper shows that the cost could be reduced considerably if the optimization of active power filter allocation, as well as their nominal currents, is carried out. Two cases have been considered – active power filters with a classical control algorithm, which operates locally and aims at obtaining sinusoidal shape of waveforms in the point of installation, and active power filters with a modified control algorithm, which aims at reduction of waveform distortions in all nodes of an analyzed power system. This paper presents a Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control algorithm for simultaneously maximizing the mobility, safety and environmental benefit in a Connected Vehicle environment. Development of Connected Vehicle (CV)/Autonomous Vehicle (AV) technology has the potential to provide essential data at the microscopic level to provide a better understanding of real-time driver behavior. This paper investigated a VSL control algorithm using a microscopic approach by focusing on individual driver’s behavior (e.g., acceleration and deceleration) through the use of Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach. A multi-objective optimization function was formulated with the aim of finding a balanced trade-off among mobility, safety and sustainability. A microscopic traffic flow prediction model was used to calculate Total Travel Time (TTT); a surrogate safety measure Time To Collision (TTC) was used to measure instantaneous safety; and, a microscopic fuel consumption model (VT-Micro) was used to measure the environmental impact. Real-time driver’s compliance to the posted speed limit was used to adjust the optimal speed limit values. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to compare the performance of the developed approach for different weights in the objective function and for two different percentages of CV. The results showed that with 100% penetration rate, the developed VSL approach outperformed the uncontrolled scenario consistently, resulting in up to 20% of total travel time reductions, 6–11% of safety improvements and 5–16% reduction in fuel consumptions. Our findings revealed that the scenario which optimized for safety alone, resulted in more optimum improvements as compared to the multi-criteria optimization. Thus, one can argue that in case of 100% penetration rates of CVs, optimizing for safety alone is enough to achieve simultaneous and optimum improvements in all measures. However, mixed results were obtained in case of lower % penetration rate which showed higher collision risk when optimizing for only mobility or fuel consumption. This paper presents a review of the optimization techniques and strategies applied to wind turbine performance optimization. The topic is addressed by identifying the most significant objectives, targets and issues, as well as the optimization formulations, schemes and models available in the published literature. The current energy demand combined with depletion of fossil-fuel reserves and stricter environmental regulations have led to the development of alternative renewable energy solutions like wind energy. The current 2030 United States target is to have at least 20% of the US energy supply by onshore and offshore wind farms. To meet these demands, wind energy costs have to be able to compete with traditional fossil fuel sources. Hence, it is essential and vital that wind turbine designers and manufactures search the optimal solution that fits the objectives under a set of design constraints. Throughout the last 30 years, the objective function has evolved from the earlier maximized metric of the power coefficient to the maximization of the annual energy production. Common alternatives such as blade mass minimization and maximization of the rotor thrust and torque have been examined. However, the main objective has been focused on the minimization of the cost of energy in order for wind energy to become more competitive and economically attractive. The purpose of this paper is to review previous work that undertakes the performance optimization of horizontal wind turbines by highlighting the main aspects when tackling the wind turbine optimization problem such as: objective functions, design constraints, tools and models and optimization algorithms. This paper presents a methodology to improve CPM/LOB scheduling method for deadline constraint satisfaction. A complete and simple heuristic approach called “heuristic line of balance” (HLOB) is introduced for scheduling projects with serial activities. It employs four heuristic rules and their appropriate combination in addition to seeking CPM/LOB initial calculation. As an improvement to the HLOB algorithm, the “search-based heuristic line of balance” (SHLOB) algorithm is also presented, which is more efficient as projects grow in size. Finally, a complete mathematical version of the LOB model in the form of mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) is applied for verification of the proposed models. Two simple case studies and a hypothetical large-scale highway project are used to test the performance of the improved models. The probability distribution of earthquake size is needed as input data for some earthquake analyses. A common procedure is to calibrate the so-called b -value in the Gutenberg–Richter relationship and to use it as the best-estimate model parameter in an algorithm to simulate the observed earthquake-size distribution. This paper introduces a new procedure for such a simulation, on the basis of performing optimization to search for the optimum model parameter. The new option and an existing method are then both utilized to model the earthquake-size distribution around Taiwan since 1978. Owing to the nature and the power of optimization, three case studies presented in this paper all indicate that the new optimization procedure can indeed improve such a simulation over the existing procedure. Moreover, with a proper tool such as Excel Solver, practicing the new method to model the observed earthquake-size distribution is as effortless as using the existing procedure. Localizing small Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) that have limited payload and perception capability is of importance to promote popularization of underwater applications. Two different methodologies, filter and optimization based methods, can both be used to address the localization problem. But they are seldom rigorously compared and their relative advantages are rarely established. This paper presents a rigorous investigation on the relationship between these two methods. Based on this examination, a novel cooperative localization algorithm for the scenario where AUVs are localized by using range measurements from a single surface mobile beacon is proposed. The main contribution of this paper is threefold. First, major difference and close connection between filter based method and optimization based Maximum a Posteriori method are explicitly clarified by analytically solving optimization problems. Second, a novel localization algorithm combining a filter based extended Kalman filter and an optimization based Moving Horizon Estimation is developed for three-dimensional underwater localization in real-time and long-term applications. The algorithm allows data fusion of multiple sensors, imposes physical constraints on states and noises, bounds computational complexity, and achieves a compromise between better accuracy and lower computational requirement. Third, observability analysis of single beacon based localization algorithm is conducted in the context of nonlinear discrete time systems and a sufficient condition is derived. The observability and improved localization accuracy of the proposed localization algorithm are verified in a customized underwater simulator by extensive numerical simulations. Endovascular coiling is a primary treatment for intra-cranial aneurysm, which deploys a thin and detachable metal wire inside the aneurysm so as to prevent its rupture. Emerging evidence from medical research and clinical practice has suggested that the coil configuration inside the aneurysm plays a vital role in properly treating aneurysm and predicting its outcome. In this paper, we propose a novel virtual coiling technique, called Ball Winding , for generating a coil configuration with ensured blocking ability. It can be used as an automatic tool for virtually simulating coiling before its implantation and thus optimizes such treatments. Our approach is based on integer linear programming and computational geometry techniques, and takes into consideration the packing density and coil distribution as the performance measurements. The resulting coiling is deployable (with the help of coil pre-shaping) and with minimized energy. The Chimp Optimization Algorithm (ChOA) is a hunting-based model and can be utilized as a set of optimization rules to tackle optimization problems. Due to agents' insufficient diversity in some complex problems, this algorithm is sometimes exposed to local optima stagnation. This paper introduces a Dynamic Lévy Flight (DLF) technique to smoothly and gradually transit the search agents from the exploration phase to the exploitation phase. To investigate the efficiency of the DLFChOA, this paper evaluates the performance of DLFChOA on twenty-three standard benchmark functions, twenty challenging functions of CEC-2005, ten suit tests of IEEE CEC06-2019, and twelve real-world optimization problems. The results are compared to benchmark optimization algorithms, including CMA-ES, SHADE, ChOA, HGSO, LGWO and ALEP (as the best benchmark Lévy-based algorithms), and eighteen state-of-the-art algorithms (as the winners of the CEC2019, the GECCO2019, and the SEMCCO2019). Among forty-three numerical test functions, DLFChOA and CMA-ES gain the first and second rank with thirty and eleven best results. In the 100-digit challenge, jDE100 with a score of 100 provides the best results, followed by DISHchain1e+12, and DLFChOA with a score of 85.68 is ranked fifth among eighteen state-of-the-art algorithms achieved the best score in seven out of ten problems. Abstract: The control algorithm hierarchy of motion control for over-actuated mechanical systems with a redundant set of effectors and actuators commonly includes three levels. First, a high-level motion control algorithm commands a vector of virtual control efforts (i.e. forces and moments) in order to meet the overall motion control objectives. Second, a control allocation algorithm coordinates the different effectors such that they together produce the desired virtual control efforts, if possible. Third, low-level control algorithms may be used to control each individual effector via its actuators. Control allocation offers the advantage of a modular design where the high-level motion control algorithm can be designed without detailed knowledge about the effectors and actuators. Important issues such as input saturation and rate constraints, actuator and effector fault tolerance, and meeting secondary objectives such as power efficiency and tear-and-wear minimization are handled within the control allocation algorithm. The objective of the present paper is to survey control allocation algorithms, motivated by the rapidly growing range of applications that have expanded from the aerospace and maritime industries, where control allocation has its roots, to automotive, mechatronics, and other industries. The survey classifies the different algorithms according to two main classes based on the use of linear or nonlinear models, respectively. The presence of physical constraints (e.g input saturation and rate constraints), operational constraints and secondary objectives makes optimization-based design a powerful approach. The simplest formulations allow explicit solutions to be computed using numerical linear algebra in combination with some logic and engineering solutions, while the more challenging formulations with nonlinear models or complex constraints and objectives call for iterative numerical optimization procedures. Experiences using the different methods in aerospace, maritime, automotive and other application areas are discussed. Complexities in river discharge, variable rainfall regime, and drought severity merit the use of advanced optimization tools in multi-reservoir operation. The gravity search algorithm (GSA) is an evolutionary optimization algorithm based on the law of gravity and mass interactions. This paper explores the GSA's efficacy for solving benchmark functions, single reservoir, and four-reservoir operation optimization problems. The GSA's solutions are compared with those of the well-known genetic algorithm (GA) in three optimization problems. The results show that the GSA's results are closer to the optimal solutions than the GA's results in minimizing the benchmark functions. The average values of the objective function equal 1.218 and 1.746 with the GSA and GA, respectively, in solving the single-reservoir hydropower operation problem. The global solution equals 1.213 for this same problem. The GSA converged to 99.97% of the global solution in its average-performing history, while the GA converged to 97% of the global solution of the four-reservoir problem. Requiring fewer parameters for algorithmic implementation and reaching the optimal solution in fewer number of functional evaluations are additional advantages of the GSA over the GA. The results of the three optimization problems demonstrate a superior performance of the GSA for optimizing general mathematical problems and the operation of reservoir systems. Abstract: This paper develops a new method and computer software to design the water-using networks of multiple contaminants by combining the concentration potential concepts (Liu et al., 2009. AIChE Journal 55, 374–382) with a Linear Programming (LP) method. The precedence order of the process units is determined by the values of the Concentration Potential of the Demands (CPDs). The allocations from the sources to the demands are decided with the LP method. To reduce the consumption of high quality sources, each source is assigned a weighting factor, which is obtained based on the values of the Concentration Potential of Sources (CPSs). The results of a few illustrated examples obtained with the presented method are comparable to that obtained with the mathematical programming algorithms in the literature. Abstract: In this paper, we try to solve the semidefinite program with box constraints. Since the traditional projection method for constrained optimization with box constraints is not suitable to the semidefinite constraints, we present a new algorithm based on the feasible direction method. In the paper, we discuss two cases: the objective function in semidefinite programming is linear and nonlinear, respectively. Abstract: Extreme learning machine (ELM) is one of the most popular and important learning algorithms. It comes from single-hidden-layer feedforward neural networks. It has been proved that ELM can achieve better performance than support vector machine (SVM) in regression and classification. In this paper, mathematically, with regression problem, the step 3 of ELM is studied. First of all, the equation are reformulated as an optimal model. With the optimality, the necessary conditions of optimal solution are presented. The equation is replaced by . We can prove that the latter must have one solution at least. Second, optimal approximation solution is discussed in cases of is column full rank, row full rank, neither column nor row full rank. Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the optimal locations of surveillance cameras on straight lanes. As known, inappropriate settings of surveillance cameras will result in some dead angles and dead space, and oversetting of surveillance cameras will waste limited resources. The considered location problem aims to minimize the maximal detection failure probability of points on straight lane subject to a limited budget. The problem is an important and complex location problem in practice. The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, exact closed forms of optimal locations of single-type surveillance cameras are derived. Secondly, we apply a PSO algorithm for solving the types and locations of multiple-type surveillance cameras. Numerical results are reported and compared with those by well known software LINGO. Abstract: This paper reports the results of an advanced algorithm for the optimization of electron beam parameters in Free Electron Laser (FEL) Linacs. In the novel approach presented in this paper, the system uses state of the art developments in video games to mimic an operator''s decisions to perform an optimization task when no prior knowledge, other than constraints on the actuators is available. The system was tested for the simultaneous optimization of the energy spread and the transmission of the Australian Synchrotron Linac. The proposed system successfully increased the transmission of the machine from 90% to 97% and decreased the energy spread of the beam from 1.04% to 0.91%. Abstract: Interactive optimization algorithms use real–time interaction to include decision maker preferences based on the subjective quality of evolving solutions. In water resources management problems where numerous qualitative criteria exist, use of such interactive optimization methods can facilitate in the search for comprehensive and meaningful solutions for the decision maker. The decision makers using such a system are, however, likely to go through their own learning process as they view new solutions and gain knowledge about the design space. This leads to temporal changes (nonstationarity) in their preferences that can impair the performance of interactive optimization algorithms. This paper proposes a new interactive optimization algorithm – Case-Based Micro Interactive Genetic Algorithm – that uses a case-based memory and case-based reasoning to manage the effects of nonstationarity in decision maker’s preferences within the search process without impairing the performance of the search algorithm. This paper focuses on exploring the advantages of such an approach within the domain of groundwater monitoring design, though it is applicable to many other problems. The methodology is tested under non-stationary preference conditions using simulated and real human decision makers, and it is also compared with a non-interactive genetic algorithm and a previous version of the interactive genetic algorithm. Abstract: In this paper a novel optimization algorithm based on imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is used for the design of a low speed single sided linear induction motor (LIM). This type of motors is used increasingly in industrial process specially in transportation systems. In these applications having high efficiency with high power factor is very important. So in this paper the objective function of design is presented considering both efficiency and power factor. Abstract: A foundation of forecasting Tropical Cyclones (TCs) is to locate their centers. There are still many difficulties in TC center locating, especially when there is an unclear eye or when spiral bands are difficult to be recognized. It is usually done by hand operationally, and multiple forecasters'' results may be inconsistent. In this paper, we treat the locating problem as an optimization one. An objective locating scheme is developed, using infrared (IR) satellite cloud images. A novel Spiral Band Model (SBM) is designed to extract and describe the spiral pattern of a spiral band which spirals out from a TC''s center. SBM is based on a spiral band region, different from existing curvilinear models which are based on curves. A simple criterion is also defined to score the matching degree between a template derived by SBM and the spiral band of a TC. In this paper the TC center locating problem is transformed to an optimization problem, and the Chaos Immune Evolutionary Algorithm (CIEA) is employed to solve this optimization problem. The spiral center of the template found at the end of the optimization process is the estimated location of the true TC''s center. The experimental result demonstrates that the proposed scheme obtains the best average error of 0.0930° in latitude/longitude in comparison with the best track data. It is well within the relative error of about 0.3° from the results of different TC warning centers. It provides objective information for forecasters to estimate TCs'' centers. Abstract: This paper presents a control algorithm for blending systems. Such systems are used in refining to produce mixtures having specified properties from several components. The underlying control problem is multi-variable, with constraints on the inputs and outputs, and involves large uncertainties. To address this complexity, a constrained optimization problem is formulated, while the uncertainties are treated in closed-loop by an estimator of the components properties. Besides a theoretical study of the main algorithm and a study of convergence, the paper presents numerous technical details that are needed to solve blending problems as they appear in refining operations. Among them are a general lack of measurements, variable delays, measurement synchronization, infeasibilities management, hydraulic constraints, and pre-blends. Abstract: This paper represents the Part II of a paper in two parts. In Part I the fundamentals of Scope Oriented Thermoeconomics have been introduced, showing a scarce potential for the cost accounting of existing plants; in this Part II the same concepts are applied to the optimization of a small set of design variables for a vapour compression chiller. The method overcomes the limit of most conventional optimization techniques, which are usually based on hermetic algorithms not enabling the energy analyst to recognize all the margins for improvement. The Scope Oriented Thermoeconomic optimization allows us to disassemble the optimization process, thus recognizing the Formation Structure of Optimality, i.e. the specific influence of any thermodynamic and economic parameter in the path toward the optimal design. Finally, the potential applications of such an in-depth understanding of the inner driving forces of the optimization are discussed in the paper, with a particular focus on the sensitivity analysis to the variation of energy and capital costs and on the actual operation-oriented design. Abstract: This paper deals with the use of reduced models for solving some optimal control problems. More precisely, the reduced model is obtained through the modal identification method. The test case which the algorithms is tested on is based on the flow over a backward-facing step. Though the reduction for the velocity fields for different Reynolds numbers is treated elsewhere , only the convection–diffusion equation for the energy problem is treated here. The model reduction is obtained through the solution of a gradient-type optimization problem where the objective function gradient is computed through the adjoint-state method. The obtained reduced models are validated before being coupled to optimal control algorithms. In this paper the feedback optimal control problem is considered. A Riccati equation is solved along with the Kalman gain equation. Additionally, a Kalman filter is performed to reconstruct the reduced state through previous and actual measurements. Abstract: Metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technology is a very efficient way to uniformly grow multi-chip, multilayer and a big area thin film. Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) method is one of the important research tools that carry out dynamic simulation of atomic thin films growth. Based on the method of KMC, this paper proposes an algorithm of the process of GaInP thin film grown by MOCVD. KMC simulation and the visualization emulation of GaInP thin film growth in MOCVD reactor are realized. The results of simulation and visualization truly and intuitively displayed process of GaInP thin film growth in MOCVD reactor. The simulation results with this paper’s algorithm well coincide with experimental results. Abstract: This paper presents a new algorithm that can be readily applied to solve the all-terminal network reliability allocation problems. The optimization problem solved considers the minimization of the network design cost subject to a known constraint on all-terminal reliability by assuming that the network contains a known number of functionally equivalent components (with different performance specifications) that can be used to provide redundancy. The algorithm is based on two major steps that use a probabilistic solution discovery approach and Monte Carlo simulation to generate the quasi-optimal network designs. Examples for different sizes of all-terminal networks are used throughout the paper to illustrate the approach. The results obtained for the larger networks with unknown optima show that the quality of the solutions generated by the proposed algorithm is significantly higher with respect to other approaches and that these solutions are obtained from restricted solution search space. The optimal parameters of a flexible square cascade for the separation of multicomponent isotopes have been calculated in this paper. In this regard, a new code called "MCSQCA-PSO" has been developed, which uses the particle swarm algorithm with mutation operator to find the optimal solution. Maximizing the amount of product recovery in a square cascade with the certain number of centrifuges machines and considering the concentration of the desired isotope in specific values, as well as increasing the D function as an objective function have been evaluated and studied. Cascade feed flow rate, machine feed flow rate, cascade cut, feed entrance point, and stages cut have been defined as optimization variables in the code. Optimization calculations are performed as an example for separation of Te-123, which has the most challenging separation between the eight stable isotopes of tellurium. In this paper, all possible arrangements of a square cascade assuming 200 centrifuges for two different separation factors have been investigated, and the enrichment of Te-123 has been increased from 0.89 % in natural feed to 65 %. The results show that the recovery coefficient increases nonlinearly with increasing the number of stages from 10 to 100, so that it is not significantly different for cascades in 40, 50, and 100 stages. In contrast, the amount of product in the cascade with 50 stages is the highest in comparison with the other cascades. Finally, the recovery coefficients of Te-123 in the cascade with 50 stages for two different separation factors have obtained 99.46 % and 92.38 %, respectively. The amount of product after two steps of separation and assuming one year of operation have been obtained 4.6 kg and 4.1, respectively. Furthermore, the ability of MCSQCA-PSO is evaluated with other optimization algorithms. Suitable alignment of the results indicates that the use of the PSO for this problem guarantees the calculation of the optimal parameters. Due to the multiple peaks generated in the power to voltage characteristics of partially shaded photovoltaic (PV) arrays there is an urgent need for an effective optimization algorithm to capture its global peak instead of the local peaks. The required optimization algorithm should converge very fast and accurately capture the global peak. Many metaheuristic optimization algorithms have been introduced to tackle this problem and balance exploration and exploitation performances. These algorithms use a constant number of searching agents (swarm size) through all iterations. The maximum power point tracker (MPPT) of the PV system requires high numbers of searching agents in the initial steps of optimization to enhance explorations, whereas the final stage of optimization requires lower numbers of searching agents to enhance exploitations, which are conditions that are currently unavailable in optimization algorithms. This was the research gap that was the main motive of creating the new algorithm introduced in this paper, where a high number of searching agents is used at the beginning of the optimization steps to enhance exploration and reduce the convergence failure. The number of searching agents should be reduced gradually to have a lower number of search agents at the end of searching steps to enhance exploitation. This need is inspired by the well-known musical chairs game in which the players and chairs start with high numbers and are reduced one by one in each round which enhances the exploration at the start of the search and exploitation at the end of the search steps. For this reason, a novel optimization algorithm called the musical chairs algorithm (MCA) is introduced in this paper. Using the MCA for MPPT of PV systems considerably provided lower convergence times and failure rates than other optimization algorithms. The convergence time and failure rate are the crucial factors in assessing the MPPT because they should be minimized as much as possible to improve the PV system efficiency and assure its stability especially in the high dynamic change of shading conditions. The convergence time was reduced to 20%–50% of those obtained using five benchmark optimization algorithms. Moreover, the oscillations at steady state is reduced to 20%–30% of the values associated the benchmark optimization algorithms. These results prove the superiority of the newly proposed MCA in the MPPTs of the PV system. Abstract: This paper presents foundations of the optimization method intended for solution of power systems operation problems and based on the principles of functional modeling (FM). This paper also presents several types of hierarchical FM algorithms for economic dispatch in these systems derived from this method. According to the FM method a power system is represented by hierarchical model consisting of systems of equations of lower (subsystem) levels and higher level system of connection equations (SCE), in which only boundary variables of subsystems are present. Solution of optimization problem in accordance with the FM method consists of the following operations: (1) solution of optimization problem for each subsystem (values of boundary variables for subsystems should be determined on the higher level of model); (2) calculation of functional characteristic (FC) of each subsystem, pertaining to state of subsystem on current iteration (these two steps are carried out on the lower level of the model); (3) formation and solution of the higher level system of equations (SCE), which gives values of boundary and supplementary boundary variables on current iteration. The key elements in the general structure of the FM method are FCs of subsystems, which represent them on the higher level of the model as “black boxes”. Abstract: Grid computing system is different from conventional distributed computing systems by its focus on large-scale resource sharing and open architecture for services. The global grid technologies and the Globus Toolkit in particular, are evolving toward an open grid service architecture (OGSA) with which a grid system provides an extensible infrastructure so that various organizations can offer their own services and integrate their resources. Hence, this paper aims at solving the problem of optimally allocating services on the grid to maximize the grid service reliability. Since no existing study has analyzed the grid service reliability, this paper develops initial modeling and evaluation algorithms to evaluate the grid service reliability. Based on the grid service reliability evaluation, we present an optimization model for the grid service allocation problem and develop a genetic algorithm (GA) to effectively solve it. In this paper we consider the problem of optimizing the operation of a building heating system under the hypothesis that the building is included as an active consumer in a demand response program. Demand response requests to the building operational system come from an external market player or a grid operator. Requests assume the form of price–volume signals specifying a maximum volume of energy to be consumed during a given time slot and a monetary reward assigned to the participant in case it fulfills the conditions. A receding horizon control approach is adopted for the minimization of the energy bill, by exploiting a simplified model of the building. Since the resulting optimization problem is a mixed integer linear program which turns out to be manageable only for buildings with very few zones, a heuristics is devised to make the algorithm applicable to realistic size problems as well. The derived control law is tested on the realistic simulator EnergyPlus to evaluate pros and cons of the proposed algorithm. The steady advances of computational methods make model-based optimization an increasingly attractive method for process improvement. Unfortunately, the available models are often inaccurate. The traditional remedy is to update the model parameters, but this generally leads to a difficult parameter estimation problem that must be solved on-line. In addition, the resulting model may not represent the plant well when there is structural mismatch between the two. The iterative optimization method called Modifier Adaptation overcomes these obstacles by directly incorporating plant measurements into the optimization framework, principally in the form of constraint values and cost and constraint gradients. However, the number of experiments required to estimate these gradients increases linearly with the number of process inputs, which tends to make the method intractable for processes with many inputs. This paper presents a new algorithm, called Directional Modifier Adaptation , that overcomes this limitation by only estimating the plant gradients in certain privileged input directions. It is proven that plant optimality with respect to these privileged directions can be guaranteed upon convergence. A novel, statistically optimal, gradient estimation technique is developed. The algorithm is illustrated through the simulation of a realistic airborne wind-energy system, a promising renewable energy technology that harnesses wind energy using large kites. Designing robust air traffic network is an ongoing research effort that seeks to improve the network robustness when one or more air routes are added to the existing network. We demonstrate that Laplacian energy is a fair and promising measure of network robustness based on a case study of a real air traffic network and extensive numerical experiments. Therefore, this paper aims at maximizing the Laplacian energy to enhance network robustness. The corresponding weighted Laplacian energy maximization problem is formulated as flight route addition problem to facilitate practical operations. Three methods are proposed to solve the flight route addition problem, including tabu search, greedy algorithm and integer program. Their trade-off between optimality performance and computational efficiency is demonstrated through the numerical results on a scale-free network. Wire-driven flexible robots are efficient devices for minimally invasive surgery, since they can work well in complex and confined environments. However, the real-time position and shape information of the robot cannot be well estimated, especially when there is a payload on the end effector. In this paper, a novel tracking and shape reconstruction method for a wire-driven flexible robot is proposed. The proposed method utilizes the length of the robot as well as the positional and directional information measured by an electromagnetic sensor mounted at the distal end of the robot. A reconstruction algorithm, which is based on a three order Bézier curve, is then carried out utilizing the positional and directional information along with the length information of the robot. This method can provide good tracking results and high shape reconstruction accuracy with limited modification of the robot. Compared with other reconstruction methods, the proposed method does not rely on any mechanical model of the robot. Therefore, the method works well with an unknown payload. This paper proposes a parametric synthesis of two different trunk lid mechanisms for sedan vehicles, incorporating three different population-based optimization techniques: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the Differential Evolution (DE). For this purpose, the kinematic equations of the mechanisms are derived and implemented in the quasi-static analysis to determine the necessary driving forces. The lengths and initial angles of four-bar linkage are optimized in order to minimize the sum of the differences between the target and calculated hand force values. The optimization results of the design variables and the performances of the optimization methods are presented. The outcomes indicate that the proposed design procedure is able to provide a trunk lid mechanism in which the target value of driving force in every moving angle is achieved. Furthermore, it is observed that the optimization techniques show different performances due to the fact that they provide better and faster optimal solutions than each other for different cases. Extraction of the photovoltaic (PV) model parameters is critical for forecasting these systems' energy output. Numerous research have reviewed and presented approaches for figuring out the PV models parameter optimization problem in the literature. However, few studies have been undertaken to construct the objective function, or no review papers have been published on the applied methodologies for solving the equations of nonlinear, multi-variable, and complicated PV models based on the datasheet information or actual experimental data. Therefore, this study seeks to first explore the acquired approaches to solve the equations of PV models. Then, utilizing actual measured laboratory data collected under a variety of environmental circumstances, a hybrid approach for efficiently determining unknown the parameters of the single, double, and three diodes PV model has been developed. The proposed guaranteed convergence arithmetic optimization algorithm based on efficient modified third order Newton Raphson (GCAOA EmNR) method highlights important contributions to the literature in terms of methodology (explorer-exploiter phases) and objective function design. The experimental findings exhibit that the GCAOA EmNR minimizes the error to zero under diverse statistical criteria and environmental conditions. Moreover, the GCAOA EmNR beats all well-published approaches in the literature in terms of accuracy, stability, and convergence rate while requiring a reasonable amount of processing time. • An innovative GCAOA EmNR is presented to extract the parameters of the SD, DD, and TD PV model at various climatic conditions. • A hybrid methodology forecasts the output PV current using NR third-order convergence and adaptive LM damping parameter. • New quadratic and fourth convergences are included to broaden the PV models' search space. • A unique transition from localized to global strategy is proposed to update the lower and upper bounds. Renewable energy technologies׳ systems are major components of the strategy to reduce harmful emissions and deal with depleting energy resources. It is necessary to deploy renewable energy sources in the best possible way such that cost is minimized and generation is maximized. In this paper, we present a review of different optimization methods for deployment and operation of renewable energy sources based generating units. Unlike other existing reviews, we carry out a general review of this research area, without limiting ourselves to any particular issue or geographic location. We examine this area with respect to different types of renewable energy sources, different modes of operations, types of objective functions for optimization and different geographical areas from which research publication are emanating. We present a general resource allocation problem and specify different possibilities for input, output, objective function and constraints. In addition, we review different objectives used in defining the optimization problems. We also present different types of linear and non-linear optimization algorithms used in renewable energy sources.
