• Five Machine Learning (ML) models compared for wave height time series prediction. • Complex ML models do not outperform simple AR in wave height time series prediction. • Comment to related papers: signal decomposition in test set series is WRONG. Significant Wave Height (SWH) is crucial in many aspect of ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of SWH has therefore been of immense practical value. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) time series prediction methods have been widely used for single-point short-term SWH time-series forecasting, resulting in many AI-based models claiming to achieve good results. However, the extent to which these complex AI models can outperform traditional methods has largely been overlooked. This study compared five different models - AutoRegressive (AR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and WaveNet - for their performance on SWH time series prediction at 16 buoy locations. Surprisingly, the results suggest that the differences of performance among different models are negligible, indicating that all these AI models have only "learned" the linear auto-regression from the data. This article introduces a versatile functional form for Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) through a simple, yet effective, transformation of the current framework. The models are applied through a new hierarchical bayesian estimation procedure for logistic regression to highly-cited papers in the Management Information Systems (MIS) field. The results are uniformly better, in regards to model fit and inference for in-sample and out-of-sample data, for simulation studies and real-world data applications, requiring very little time to convergence to true population parameters. In simulation studies, I show that the method contains the true parameters nearly three times as often as widely used existing GLMs, and does so while having confidence intervals that are 54.50% smaller, while requiring around two-thirds the number of MCMC iterations as existing bayesian methods. In Scientometric applications the methodology is shown to be highly robust with predictive/classification accuracy, either equaling or exceeding existing methods for identifying highly-cited articles including Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Thus, the method is shown to be robust to the amount of asymmetry (or symmetry) of the probability of success (or failure) and robust to unbalanced samples and varying Data Generating Processes. Further, the methodology is equivalent to current methods if the data support them and is therefore complementary to existing methods, without loss of interpretability of model parameters. For the MIS field it finds that Popularity Parameter (PP) of an article Keywords can predict whether a paper will be highly-cited (top 25% of highly-cited articles) between two to three years after publication and beyond. The process of miner selection in blockchain networks plays a significant role in maintaining the efficiency and security of the net- work. In blockchain, the consensus algorithm is crucial for miner selection. Considering the downsides of the consensus algorithm (PoW, PoS) this paper employs proof of artificial intelligence (PoAI) over proof of stake and proof of work. This paper proposes an approach for miner selection using the Proof of Artificial Intelligence (PoAI) framework, which leverages Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) to predict efficient miners for blockchain networks. This paper describes the design and implementation of our PoAI that uses DNN algorithm on a bitcoin dataset, is a combination of supervised and unsupervised learning techniques to model the be- havior of miners using suitable features such as age, number of blocks mined, transaction volume and number of transactions. Our model, the "Enhanced Artificial Intelligence for Infectious Municipal Waste Classification System," combines ensemble image segmentation methods and diverse convolutional neural network models. Innovative geometric image augmentation enhances model robustness, diversifies training data, and improves accuracy across waste types. A pivotal aspect is the integration of a reinforcement learning-differential evolution algorithm as a decision fusion strategy, optimizing classification by harmonizing outputs from ensemble methods and convolutional neural network models. Computational results, using a newly collected dataset, demonstrate our model's accuracy exceeding 96.54% while using the existing solid waste dataset we achieve the accuracy of 97.81%, outperforming advanced approaches by margins ranging from 2.02% to 8.80%. Precision Agriculture (PA) has revolutionized crop management by leveraging information technology, satellite positioning data, and remote sensing. One crucial component in PA applications is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which offers valuable insights into crop vigor and health. However, discontinuity of optical satellite acquisitions related to cloud cover and the huge load of the required processing time pose challenges to real-time applications. NDVI prediction emerges as an innovative solution to address these limitations. It allows for proactive decision-making by providing accurate estimates, enabling farmers and land managers to plan essential agronomic activities such as irrigation, fertilization, and pest control, based on anticipated future conditions. This study introduces an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model incorporating NDVI, Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), temperatures, and precipitation as predictive variables. The model employs a novel time series slicing algorithm, Boosting Adaptive Time Series Slicer (BATS), to enhance the input training dataset's variability, presenting the model with a broader range of examples. A 2-Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) forecasting model was developed to predict future NDVI values over short and medium-term horizons. The study area used to train, test and validate the ANN corresponds to a diverse landscape of cultivated corn fields located in Piemonte (NW-Italy). Results showed that NDVI future estimates were accurate; considering three time horizons for predictions (5, 10, and 15 days) RMSE values resulted to be 0.028, 0.038 and 0.050, respectively. Additionally, ablation tests proved that the most important variable for enhancing the model's accuracy is the NDWI, and the most useful timesteps are the four most recent ones. To preliminary investigate the capability of the ANN to operate over a wider and different area it was applied over the entire Europe, using the LUCAS dataset as reference map to locate corn fields. Results show RMSE of 0.062, 0.083 and 0.105 for the 5, 10 and 15 days forecasting horizons, respectively. The methodology proposed in this paper can be a possible alternative to more ordinary approaches for NDVI forecasting that nowadays appears to be a fundamental step for a proactive precision agriculture where crop management can be significantly improved. In recent studies, artificial intelligence models have been developed for the prediction of nitrogen oxide emissions from thermal power plants. This research utilizes an artificial intelligence prediction model with more coal input features than boiler features, including volatility, ash content, sulfur content, fixed carbon, total moisture, calorific value, grinding rate, fuel ratio, coal feeding rate, boiler efficiency, total air volume, and excess air volume. The paper delves into the importance analysis of input features for artificial intelligence models. Moreover, feature importance analysis is not only a prerequisite for predicting nitrogen oxide emissions but also a study providing insights into model performance. An artificial neural networks (ANN) regression model is employed to predict nitrogen oxide emissions, and the results demonstrate that the number of feature importance significantly impacts model performance. Artificial Intelligence has found wide application, but also poses risks due to unintentional or malicious tampering during deployment. Regular checks are therefore necessary to detect and prevent such risks. Fragile watermarking is a technique used to identify tampering in AI models. However, previous methods have faced challenges including risks of omission, additional information transmission, and inability to locate tampering precisely. In this paper, we propose a method for detecting tampered parameters and bits, which can be used to detect, locate, and restore parameters that have been tampered with. We also propose an adaptive embedding method that maximizes information capacity while maintaining model accuracy. Our approach was tested on multiple neural networks subjected to attacks that modified weight parameters, and our results demonstrate that our method achieved great recovery performance when the modification rate was below 20%. A key development towards enhancing computer-human interaction is emotion recognition. This publication describes a technique called EmoCNN, which uses deep learning techniques to precisely identify and classify human emotions, emphasizing improving model performance using different optimizers. Our research intends to contribute to the creation of more effective systems that improve computer-human interaction by solving the problems associated with emotion recognition. By bridging the gap between humans and robots, accurate emotion detection enables systems to perceive emotions for customized and responsive interactions. AI-powered assistants, chatbots, and social robots all benefit from emotion recognition by providing more responsive, empathic and interesting user experiences. Emotion-aware technologies can also enhance user feedback analysis, human-centered design, and monitoring of mental health. Using a human emotion detection dataset, we carried out comprehensive experiments focusing on the happy, sad, and neutral emotion classes. Constructing a customized EmoCNN model with convolutional layers, a hidden layer, ReLU activation, and max-pooling was the focus of our computational work. We investigated various optimizers and evaluated how they affected accuracy, convergence speed and loss minimization. The results demonstrated that the EmoCNN model, which had been trained using the Adam optimizer, gave the best accuracy in distinguishing between emotions. Our paper provides a comparative analysis, highlighting the superiority of EmoCNN over existing models, showcasing its ability to achieve higher validation accuracy (89%) and more efficient emotion recognition when compared to previous approaches with minimal loss. Cybersecurity threats, particularly spam SMS, are increasingly sophisticated, demanding more advanced detection systems. Traditional spam detection methods fall short due to their ineffectiveness against novel threats and lack of transparency. This paper investigates the role of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) in spam detection, emphasizing the interpretability of AI-driven systems through SHapley Additive explanations (SHAP). We propose a hybrid model combining BERT with Random Forest (RF) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for spam detection, and employ SHAP values to elucidate the decision-making process. The study demonstrates that our XAI approach not only improves the accuracy of spam detection but also enhances the transparency and trustworthiness of the predictions. These findings suggest that the incorporation of XAI into spam detection models is not only beneficial but necessary for future cybersecurity measures. Numerous Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions are available for achieving thermal comfort. They were either trained with limited datasets or using personalized training with limited field studies. This work assessed the model that used the ASHRAE multiple databases as the shallow supervised learning dataset for an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based controller suitable for the residential dwellings' node. The learning accuracy can be increased to 96.1%. This paper presented the field studies to show the model performances for the common UK dwellings: the prior 1970s, the new, modular, refurbished, and the use of new materials to improve indoor thermal performance. The result shows that the model was able to perform in different environments and able to acknowledge adaptive human comfort. This was shown by the ability to represent 98.90% of the ASHRAE Standard 55 data, 6.06% improvement from the previous research. As a result, the broader comfort zone acknowledgement can lead to energy saving whilst maintaining comfort by the possibility of lowering the temperature set point. This study also proves that further energy savings can be acquired from the occupants' presence, scheduling, and activities. These factors can increase the comfort probability to more than 10%. The motivation of this paper is to investigate the resistance of countries' energy research and development (RD&D) expenditures to random shocks. The analysis includes the five countries (France, Germany, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom) that are the biggest investors in RD&D in fossil fuels, renewables, energy efficiency, and nuclear energy. Thus, economies will be able to take precautions against global shocks in producing sustainable energy policies. To achieve this aim, this paper uses the artificial neural network approach, which uses a distributed computing model that can store and generalize data after a learning period. Empirical results widely depend on countries and distinct energy technology policy fields. The key findings provide evidence that RD&D expenditures, except for renewables, do not tend to mean revert. The economies of Japan, Germany, and the United States should make more renewable investments to reduce the resistance of renewable energy sources to shocks and thus produce policies for both environmental sustainability and energy security. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and its related capabilities has led industries to rethink the existing practices of conventional supply chain management and data analysis. Machine learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL) and their unique ability to predict future data and classify data have led to important research in the supply chain (SC) domain, particularly in identifying and prioritizing supply chain risks. This paper proposes several DL methodologies to exploit the benefit of DL, particularly to identify whether any product will be delivered late due to any unforeseen reason in a complex SC system. Four different DL architectures (Simple-LSTM, Deep-LSTM, 1D-CNN, and TCN-1DSPCNN models) are proposed to extract features, while six variant classifiers: Softmax, random trees (RT), random forest (RF), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector machine (SVM), were used to classify delay or non-delay information. By seamlessly capturing intricate temporal dependencies, these DL models enhance accuracy in robustly identifying supply chain late orders. Leveraging their hierarchical feature learning, these proposed DL models excel in recognizing subtle patterns and correlations, making them ideal for classifying late orders within the supply chain. Their parallel processing prowess facilitates real-time decision support, allowing organizations to address potential delays and allocate resources effectively and proactively. Five-fold cross-validation is presented to avoid over-fitting and to prove the efficiency of the proposed DL models. The growing integration of AI in agriculture necessitates access to diverse data sets for training artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Manufacturers often face challenges due to a perceived shortage of valid data sets, highlighting the need for centralized platforms offering high-quality data. While global AI regulations are yet to be established, existing laws govern data collection, creation, labeling, and processing for AI training in various legal systems. The absence of explicit AI laws prompts a call for platforms supplying data to adhere to relevant regulations, especially in areas where AI controls devices interacting with humans, such as collision warning systems in yard tractors and robots. Compliance is crucial, given the complexity of rules governing data sets featuring people, animals, and buildings. The paper focuses on how to check the compliant data sets in Germany's legal context, focusing on situations in farm yards. People are often visible on such data sets; thus, the data set must preserve the right to informational self-determination and one's image, which is prevalent in many legal systems. Images portraying people typically qualify as personal data, requiring careful anonymization to address privacy concerns. The paper uses artificial neural networks (ANN) to remove images that contradict people's rights on one's image; thus, data sets that comply with data protection laws can be created. It also addresses the lesser-explored issue of the right to one's image in German law. Though AI training may not be impeded, dissemination via digital platforms must adhere to legal boundaries, even if metadata is absent. The increasing integration of distributed energy resources has led to heightened complexity in distribution network models, posing challenges of uncertainty and volatility to the operation and control of distribution networks. Simultaneously, the widespread deployment of metering and sensing devices has furnished data-driven approaches with copious data sources. As a potent tool for data mining, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have the capacity to harness extensive datasets, thus furnishing comprehensive energy services for distribution grids. This paper provides a comprehensive exposition of AI techniques applied in the realm of distribution network voltage control (DNVC). Initially, a brief overview is provided for the four voltage control frameworks and the data calibration of DNVC, serving as the foundation for various voltage control algorithms. Subsequently, in ascending order of algorithmic advancement, the application of improved heuristic algorithms, deep learning (DL) algorithms structured around artificial neural networks (ANNs), and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms in the DNVC domain are sequentially introduced, and the relationships among the three AI technologies in framework, control principles, and performance are systematically analyzed. Additionally, attention is directed toward the algorithmic progress made in addressing specific challenges within the DNVC process. Lastly, building upon extant research, the paper summarizes four prominent developmental directions for AI in DNVC: safety exploration, information privacy, multi-feeder collaboration, and heightened uncertainty. Despite the existence of evidence-based rehabilitation strategies that address biomechanical deficits, the persistence of recurrent ankle problems in 70% of patients with acute ankle sprains highlights the unresolved nature of this issue. Artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a promising tool to identify definitive predictors for ankle sprains. This paper aims to summarize the use of AI in investigating the ankle biomechanics of healthy and subjects with ankle sprains. Articles published between 2010 and 2023 were searched from five electronic databases. 59 papers were included for analysis with regards to: i). types of motion tested (functional vs. purposeful ankle movement); ii) types of biomechanical parameters measured (kinetic vs kinematic); iii) types of sensor systems used (lab-based vs field-based); and, iv) AI techniques used. Most studies (83.1%) examined biomechanics during functional motion. Single kinematic parameter, specifically ankle range of motion, could obtain accuracy up to 100% in identifying injury status. Wearable sensor exhibited high reliability for use in both laboratory and on-field/clinical settings. AI algorithms primarily utilized electromyography and joint angle information as input data. Support vector machine was the most used supervised learning algorithm (18.64%), while artificial neural network demonstrated the highest accuracy in eight studies. The potential for remote patient monitoring is evident with the adoption of field-based devices. Nevertheless, AI-based sensors are underutilized in detecting ankle motions at risk of sprain. We identify three key challenges: sensor designs, the controllability of AI models, and the integration of AI-sensor models, providing valuable insights for future research. • We analyzed older driver at-fault crashes at unsignalized intersections in Alabama. • We estimated random parameter models. • We introduced a deep learning approach based on Artificial Neural Networks. • We identified variables that increase the likelihood of injuries and fatalities. • We discussed possible countermeasures to address older driver at-fault crashes. Introduction: The research described in this paper explored the factors contributing to the injury severity resulting from the male and female older driver (65 years and older) at-fault crashes at unsignalized intersections in Alabama. Method: Random parameter logit models of injury severity were estimated. The estimated models identified a variety of statistically significant factors influencing the injury severities resulting from older driver at-fault crashes. Results : According to these models, some variables were found to be significant only in one model (male or female) but not in the other one. For example, variables such as driver under the influence of alcohol/drugs, horizontal curve, and stop sign were found significant only in the male model. On the other hand, variables such as intersection approaches on tangents with flat grade, and driver older than 75 years were found significant only in the female model. In addition, variables such as making turning maneuver, freeway-ramp junction, high speed approach, and so forth were found significant in both models. Estimation findings showed that two parameters in the male model and another two parameters in the female model could be modeled as random parameters, indicating their varying influences on the injury severity due to unobserved effects. In addition to the random parameter logit approach, a deep learning approach based on Artificial Neural Networks was introduced to predict the outcome of the crashes based on 164 variables that are listed in the crash database. The artificial intelligence (AI)-based method achieved an accuracy of 76% indicating the role of the variables in deciding the final outcome. Practical Applications: Future plans are set to study the use of AI on large sized datasets to achieve a relatively high-performance, and hence to be able to identify which variables contribute the most to the final outcome. The advent of reliable and inexpensive sensors and advancements in general computing have made data-heavy algorithms feasible for operational, real-time decision-making applications in the geothermal energy industry. This systematic review aims to provide a starting point for researchers interested in developing data-driven systems, tools, and frameworks to enhance the performance and reliability of above-ground geothermal energy operations. The approach and results of the review are presented to answer the following research questions: how has data analytics been applied in above-ground geothermal operations, what data sets have been used in such studies, which types of machine learning or artificial intelligence algorithms have been used in geothermal studies, and at which stages of geothermal development have studies been applied. Published research articles were retrieved from four literature databases: the International Geothermal Association (IGA) online library, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and IEEE Xplore. A total of 830 publications were retrieved using the same search query across the selected databases, from which 63 research papers were selected based on a set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. A full-text evaluation of the selected research papers revealed that machine learning has been used in geothermal for design optimisation, performance monitoring, performance optimisation, fault detection, and other applications. Most of the trained models (95 %) were of the artificial neural network family with other model types generally used as performance benchmarks. Machine/deep learning (ML/DL) has been hugely leveraged to solve complex problems involved with processing high-dimensional data. However, reasoning and quantifying different uncertainties to achieve effective decision-making have been much less explored in ML/DL than in other Artificial Intelligence (AI) domains. In particular, belief/evidence theories have been studied in Knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR) since the 1960s to reason and measure uncertainties to enhance decision-making effectiveness. Based on our in-depth literature review, only a few studies have leveraged mature uncertainty research in belief/evidence theories in ML/DL to tackle complex problems under different types of uncertainty. Our present survey paper discusses major belief theories and their core ideas dealing with uncertainty causes and types and quantifying them, along with the discussions of their applicability in ML/DL. Particularly, we discuss three main approaches leveraging belief theories in Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), including Evidential DNNs, Fuzzy DNNs, and Rough DNNs, in terms of their uncertainty causes, types, and quantification methods along with their applicability in diverse problem domains. Through an in-depth understanding of the extensive survey on this topic, we discuss insights, lessons learned, limitations of the current state-of-the-art bridging belief theories and ML/DL, and future research directions. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is an emerging research field bringing transparency to highly complex and opaque machine learning (ML) models. Despite the development of a multitude of methods to explain the decisions of black-box classifiers in recent years, these tools are seldomly used beyond visualization purposes. Only recently, researchers have started to employ explanations in practice to actually improve models. This paper offers a comprehensive overview over techniques that apply XAI practically to obtain better ML models, and systematically categorizes these approaches, comparing their respective strengths and weaknesses. We provide a theoretical perspective on these methods, and show empirically through experiments on toy and realistic settings how explanations can help improve properties such as model generalization ability or reasoning, among others. We further discuss potential caveats and drawbacks of these methods. We conclude that while model improvement based on XAI can have significant beneficial effects even on complex and not easily quantifiable model properties, these methods need to be applied carefully, since their success can vary depending on a number of factors, such as the model and dataset used, or the employed explanation method. A neural network is a computer system modeled on the nerve tissue and nervous system. In this sense, neural networks refer to systems of neurons, either organic or artificial in nature. Neural networks have diverse applications in computer graphics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine & deep learning, chemistry, material science, among others. Research on structural properties and their classification of favorable or unfavorable for neural networks has been started recently. Employing tools from mathematics and specifically graph theory has been a key research direction in this area. Different graph-theoretic parameters have potential applications in studying topological properties of neural networks. In this paper for the first time, we study some nondeterministic polynomial-time (NP)-complete and NP-hard problems on various neural networks by considering their graphs. We consider classes of 3- and 4-layered probabilistic neural networks (PNNs), cellular neural networks (CNNs), and Tickysym spiking neural networks (TSNNs). In order to study their topological properties, we study their structures of maximal cliques, minimal colorings, maximal independent sets, maximal and perfect matchings, and minimum dominating sets. Computational results on the clique number, chromatic number, independence number, matching ratio and the domination number are reported. For instance, the clique number of the probabilistic neural networks is 2, the Tickysym spiking neural network is 3, whereas, for the cellular neural network, it is 4. These numerical results quantify the incoming/outgoing traffic in these architectures. Similarly, the independence number of 25-nodal 3-layered probabilistic neural network is 15, whereas, the independence number of 25-nodal cellular neural network is just 9. Moreover, the asymptotic matching ratio for PNNs (resp. CNNs) is 1 2 (resp. 1 8 ), whereas, it is 1 6 for the case of TSNNs. This gives probabilistic neural networks a significant priority in controllability over cellular neural networks. Some open problems are proposed in the end to further this research area. To facilitate the personalized smart manufacturing paradigm with cognitive automation capabilities, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has attracted ever-increasing attention by offering an adaptive and flexible solution. DRL takes the advantages of both Deep Neural Networks (DNN) and Reinforcement Learning (RL), by embracing the power of representation learning, to make precise and fast decisions when facing dynamic and complex situations. Ever since the first paper of DRL was published in 2013, its applications have sprung up across the manufacturing field with exponential publication growth year by year. However, there still lacks any comprehensive review of the DRL in the field of smart manufacturing. To fill this gap, a systematic review process was conducted, with 261 relevant publications selected to date (20-Oct-2022), to gain a holistic understanding of the development, application, and challenges of DRL in smart manufacturing along the whole engineering lifecycle. First, the concept and development of DRL are summarized. Then, the typical DRL applications are analyzed in the four engineering lifecycle stages: design, manufacturing, distribution, and maintenance. Finally, the challenges and future directions are illustrated, especially emerging DRL-related technologies and solutions that can improve the manufacturing system's deployment feasibility, cognitive capability, and learning efficiency, respectively. Implementing associative memory experiments with nanoscale memristors is an interesting subject, which can allow robots to mimic human thinking. This paper is concerned with a new emotion model of memristor-based neural network and its circuit implementation. The model has three inputs and two outputs, which can feel happy when it receives good news or feel sad when it receives bad news. Unknown news can be recognized through associative memory, which simulates human emotions. Associative learning and three kinds of forgetting process together make up the full-function emotion model. In addition, the Ag/AgInSbTe/Ta-based model closely related to the actual physical properties of memristors is used to design synaptic structures. The circuits of memristor-based neural networks are also simplified. Furthermore, the new emotion model is able to adjust the changing rate of emotion. The process reflects the fact that humans learn the same thing faster at the second time, compared with the first time. Finally, PSPICE is used to simulate all the circuits of the emotion model. Deep reinforcement learning has shown useful in the field of robotics but the black-box nature of deep neural networks impedes the applicability of deep reinforcement learning agents for real-world tasks. This is addressed in the field of explainable artificial intelligence, by developing explanation methods that aim to explain such agents to humans. Model trees as surrogate models have proven useful for producing explanations for black-box models used in real-world robotic applications, in particular, due to their capability of providing explanations in real time. In this paper, we provide an overview and analysis of available methods for building model trees for explaining deep reinforcement learning agents solving robotics tasks. We find that multiple outputs are important for the model to be able to grasp the dependencies of coupled output features, i.e. actions. Additionally, our results indicate that introducing domain knowledge via a hierarchy among the input features during the building process results in higher accuracies and a faster building process. This paper attempts to present an Internet of Things (IoT) based Home Energy Management System (HEMS) to accommodate Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Distributed Generation (DG) Integration in Smart Micro Grid environment. This work presents the feasibility of load and weather Big Data acquisition, online load forecasting /prediction, online load priority assignment, online peak clipping estimation on the cloud (Thingspeak). Load priority and peak clipping Demand Side Management (DSM) Techniques are used to run Load Management Algorithm (LMA) on the cloud which ultimately executes AI-based DG Integration at the load center. Based on the real time load and weather Big Data Load Priority Table (LPT) is generated on the cloud in order to assign the priority to the loads of the load center and online forecasting is also carried out on the cloud to estimate Total Power P T using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and five different ML algorithms which are later utilized to estimate Threshold /Peak Clipping Power P Th. Using these LPT and P Th values LMA executes AI-based DG Integration. To that end, a novel IoT-based HEMS is designed and fabricated to run cloud-based LMA in order to accommodate proposed DG Integration. Amongst all the prediction algorithms trained on the cloud to estimate P Th , Linear Regression (LR) ML algorithm is witnessed to have lowest RMSE of 4.44e−13, MSE of 1.97e−25 and MAE of 2.11e−13. Lipreading is the ability to recognize words or sentences from the mouth movements of a speaking person. This process is also known as Visual Speech Recognition (VSR). Lipreading has two main advantages: facilitate communication for people with hearing or speaking problems and aid speech recognition in noisy environments. In this paper, we propose a lipreading computing system capable of recognizing ten common Arabic words by performing word extraction from the mouth movements. The system receives a video of a person uttering an Arabic word as an input and outputs the text of the predicted word. During the implementation stage of the proposed system, three deep learning and neural network architectures are alternatively used to train, validate, and test the system using a locally collected and preprocessed dataset. The dataset contains 1051 videos and will be made available upon request. Moreover, a voting model that combines the three architectures is proposed. A substantial amount of research has been carried out in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) models, especially in those which explain the deep architectures of neural networks. A number of XAI approaches have been proposed to achieve trust in Artificial Intelligence (AI) models as well as provide explainability of specific decisions made within these models. Among these approaches, global interpretation methods have emerged as the prominent methods of explainability because they have the strength to explain every feature and the structure of the model. This survey attempts to provide a comprehensive review of global interpretation methods that completely explain the behaviour of the AI models. We present a taxonomy of the available global interpretations models and systematically highlight the critical features and algorithms that differentiate them from local as well as hybrid models of explainability. Through examples and case studies from the literature, we evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the global interpretation models and assess challenges when these methods are put into practice. We conclude the paper by providing the future directions of research in how the existing challenges in global interpretation methods could be addressed and what values and opportunities could be realized by the resolution of these challenges. Cloud-fog based industries are entailing today greedy energy costs, given the wide multiplication of their AI models and distributed BD frameworks implementations. This paper conducts a newsworthy inquiry purposing to study at which extent IT community are conscious about energy evaluation of their hardware and software implementations, and whether they are in line with sustainable implications toward efficient AI and BD deployments. Through an analysis of responses to the first inquiry questions, we were able to address the residing interoperability between AI models, distributed BD frameworks, and cloud-fog systems. Unfortunately, only 10% of respondents were adopting energy metrics when evaluating their implementations. Even worse, multi-level energy consumption measurement techniques were not evident to most respondents. Accordingly, we provided a useful guideline of various multi-level energy and power estimation approaches. Hereafter, we devoted in accordance with both inquiry and literature results some essential parts for analyzing emerging efficient DNNs and distributed BD implementations. These endeavors were mainly manifested in the form of efficient reconfigurable accelerators designs based on Processing-In-Memory and Processing-Near-Memory architectures. Wastewater treatment is a complex process that involves many uncertainties, leading to fluctuations in effluent quality and costs, and environmental risks. Artificial intelligence (AI) can handle complex nonlinear problems and has become a powerful tool for exploring and managing wastewater treatment systems. This study provides a summary of the current status and trends in AI research as applied to wastewater treatment, based on published papers and patents. Our results indicate that, at present, AI is primarily used to evaluate removal of pollutants (conventional, typical, and emerging contaminants), optimize models and process parameters, and control membrane fouling. Future research will likely continue to focus on removal of phosphorus, organic pollutants, and emerging contaminants. Moreover, analyzing microbial community dynamics and achieving multi-objective optimization are promising directions of research. The knowledge map shows that there may be future technological innovation related to predicting water quality under specific conditions, integrating AI with other information technologies and utilizing image-based AI and other algorithms in wastewater treatment. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are becoming more popular to model ocean engineering problems. With the development of Artificial Intelligence, data-driven models are showing better behaviour and performance than the traditional models used in ocean engineering. However, the main limitation of ANNs models is the uncertainty associated to them and their "black box" nature. ANNs models present final results without any uncertainty or explanation and this limits enormously their applicability, especially in decision-making tasks. Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) can provide continuous monitoring of patients' health. Such monitoring can be a decisive factor in health and death situations. Fault management in WBANs is a key reliability component to make it socially acceptable and to overcome pertained challenges such as unpredicted faults, massive data streaming, and detection accuracy. Failures in fault detection due to hardware, software, and network issues may put human lives at risk. This paper focuses on detecting and predicting faults in sensors in the context of a WBAN. A framework is proposed to manage AI-based prediction models and fault detection using thresholds where four Machine learning techniques: Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Deep Neural Networks (DNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Decision Trees (DT), are used. The framework also provides alarm notifications, prediction model deployment, version control, and sensing node profiling. As a proof of concept, a fault management prototype is implemented and validated. The prototype classifies faults, manages automation of sensing node profiling, training, and validation of new models. The conventional standardized theoretical models (such as Webster, Alcelik, Indo-HCM) used for the delay estimation revolve around the mathematical hypothesis and assumptions, making them static with limitations in accommodating the dynamic traffic behaviors. Recent advances in artificial intelligence make machine learning techniques suitable for estimating vehicle control delay compared to conventional methods. This paper demonstrates the application of several machine learning models developed by focusing on the fluctuations of traffic observed at an intersection having heterogeneous traffic conditions in Ahmedabad city for delay estimation. Several parameters are extracted from on-field and video surveys. However, not all parameters are relevant for accurately estimating vehicle control delay. Hence, a feature selection process consisting of several feature-scoring techniques from filter, wrapper, and embedded methods is applied to all the parameters. This process gave insights into the most statistically relevant independent parameters, and out of all the parameters, cycle time was found to be insignificant, with a feature score of 0 from almost all techniques. Hence, it was removed, and then the prominent parameters were then used to build a vehicle control delay model using support vector regression (SVR), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), artificial neural network (ANN), random forest regression (RF), and decision tree regression (DT). Error distribution, standard deviation of errors, coefficient of Determination (R2), and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) are the parameters used for evaluating the performance of the machine learning models. RF outperformed them all with a standard deviation of errors, R2, and RMSE of 11.065, 0.926, and 11.081 on testing data. But ANN, KNN, and DT also performed satisfactorily. To optimize the operation of his wind farm, the farm manager needs to make precise diagnostic decisions for scheduling efficiently the maintenance actions. To assist him in this task, this paper proposes an approach aimed at designing a hybrid diagnoser model for two main goals. The first one is to detect anomalies at an early stage, and the second one is to provide specific deductions or explanations about the potential cause of the problem. In this way, the developed system can help the maintenance manager understand why a particular decision needs to be made. To do this, an original approach coupling the artificial intelligence technique with a discrete event system is proposed to diagnose, identify, and explain a probable source of a problem. Thus, the proposed method uses a hybrid approach consisting of two model blocks. The first block consists of autoencoder models to extract feature representation to diagnose the health state of the system. The second one is a discrete event-based model to create and visualize rule-based anomaly alerts and triggers to provide plausible explanations to the operator to improve his task. Then, this work introduces a methodology to jointly train these two models and learn all parameters of the hybrid diagnoser. It is shown how the information extracted from the neural network model is used to automatically construct the event-based model to explain the occurrence of an anomaly. The proposed system achieved significant results in explaining and detecting early five types of anomalies in wind turbine systems with accuracy up to 80%. • A new AI-based model learning method for HCF of the joints in large-span steel structures is proposed. • The PSO-ANN-ABC AI algorithm is applied to firstly predict fatigue resistance for welded spherical joints. • A subroutine for HCF damages is developed to solve the problem non-stationary amplitudes and frequencies. Welded spherical joints are critical components in large-span bridges and spatial steel structures prone to high cycle fatigue (HCF) loadings. Challenges exist for assessing fatigue life of this joints in small data from physical experiments and no detailed fatigue classification in design codes. This paper investigates the fatigue resistance of welded spherical joints and the real-time pre-damage evolution under non-stationary HCF loadings by proposing AI-based macro model learning from fine FE models and fatigue tests. Firstly, the structural features of welded spherical joints about stress concentration and weld defects were analyzed and quantified, so modified S-N curve was built. Then, based on artificial intelligence (AI-based) learning, stress concentration factors (SCF) were obtained by an artificial neural network with particle swarm optimization and the modified fatigue resistance of welded spherical joints was derived by artificial bee colony algorithms. Finally, the macro linkage element was proposed as a user element subroutine (UEL), by which non-stationary fatigue pre-damage evolution based on the time-domain incremental analytical method was realized. The results not only indicated the damage value close to the ones derived by commonly used rain flow count methods, but also provided the pre-damage evolution curve for real-time monitoring. To mitigate the high cost of integrated ship design, in this paper, we propose an innovative integrated hull design methodology utilizing artificial intelligence-aided design technology. The AIAD methodology leverages a deep neural network model constructed from multiple fidelities datasets to curtail the exponential growth in data requirements resulting from the proliferation of design variables caused by integration. Combining the proposed bump-free deformation method and optimization algorithms with the multi-fidelity deep network, the AIAD-based design approach facilitates the achievement of optimal hull design solutions with remarkable fidelity while minimizing design workload. Utilizing the developed design method, we performed a numerical test on integrated-hull design for container ships. Extensive research has been conducted on analyzing human movements, driven by its diverse practical applications such as human–robot interaction, human learning, and clinical diagnosis. However, the current state-of-the-art still encounters scientific challenges when it comes to modeling human movements. There are two key aspects that need to be addressed. Firstly, new models should consider the stochastic nature of human movement and the physical structure of the human body to accurately predict the patterns in full-body motion descriptors over time. Secondly, while deep learning algorithms have been utilized, they lack explainability in terms of predicting body posture sequences, making it essential to improve their comprehensible representation of human movement. This paper aims to tackle these challenges by presenting three innovative methods for creating explainable representations of human movement. The study formulates human body movement as a state-space model based on the Gesture Operational Model (GOM). Model parameters are estimated through either one-shot training employing Kalman Filters or data-intensive training utilizing artificial neural networks. The trained models are utilized for analyzing the dexterity of expert professionals in full-body movements, enabling the identification of dynamic associations between body joints and gesture recognition. Date fruit (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is known for its diversity in terms of genotypes that differ in shape, color, texture, taste, and other physical and sensory attributes, in addition to biochemical compounds. This richness generates complex, long, and tedious work at the scale of farm as well as in handling, processing, and storage facilities to prepare standardized, and homogenous final products that deal with consumer preferences and needs. To alleviate this, an increased importance and particular trend were observed recently for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and computer vision technology since they are considered as accurate, objective, non-destructive, fast, and efficient emerging technologies. In this context, this manuscript provides comprehensive insights into key applications of AI techniques and computer vision technology, using different classification models and algorithms developed on the basis (for example) of neural network classifiers, such as convolutional and artificial neural network, on harvest and postharvest assessment of date fruit. Thus, the importance of date fruit dataset used in the AI domain was discussed with link to all accessible datasets in the field of date palm. In addition, available and relevant AI tools and approaches applied to the postharvest of date fruit from maturity distinguishing until storage through other key handling operations, sorting, grading, etc., were detailed in the five sections of this paper. This paper introduces a comprehensive, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) artifact design, integrating accident data for utilization by diverse stakeholders and decision-makers. It proposes responsible, explanatory, and interpretable models with a systems-level taxonomy categorizing aspects of driver-related behaviors associated with varying injury severity levels, thereby contributing theoretically to explainable analytics. In the initial phase, we employed various advanced techniques such as data missing at random (MAR) with Bayesian dynamic conditional imputation for addressing missing records, synthetic minority oversampling technique for data imbalance issues, and categorical boosting (CatBoost) combined with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) for determining and analyzing the importance and dependence of risk factors on injury severity. Additionally, exploratory feature analysis was conducted to uncover hidden spatiotemporal elements influencing traffic accidents and injury severity levels. We developed several predictive models in the second phase, including eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), random forest (RF), deep neural networks (DNN), and fine-tuned parameters. Using the SHAP approach, we employed model-agnostic interpretation techniques to separate explanations from models. In the final phase, we provided an analysis and summary of the system-level taxonomy across feature categories. Device-to-device (D2D) communication demonstrates its efficacy across diverse domains, including military, surveillance, public safety, disaster management, content sharing, and local advertising, through its provision of proximity-based connections. Moreover, it elevates data rates, spectrum efficiency, and network throughput with efficient resource allocation while simultaneously reducing latency. However, it encounters challenges related to unregulated high-power consumption, leading to interference in D2D communication. Hence, in this paper, we proposed a deep neural network (DNN) and cognitive radio-driven efficient power control scheme for D2D communication. The proposed scheme operates in two distinct phases: the cognitive radio and the DNN-based phase. In this context, cognitive radio aids in selecting secondary users or cellular mobile equipment (CUE) through energy detection spectrum sensing. Subsequently, the DNN model is employed to optimize the transmission power of CUE in D2D communication. However, precise measurement of PM levels requires expensive and sophisticated equipment. Although low-cost alternatives are gaining popularity, their reliability is questionable, attributed to sensitivity to environmental conditions, inherent instability, and manufacturing imperfections. The objectives of this paper include (i) introduction of an innovative approach to field calibration for low-cost PM sensors using artificial intelligence methods, (ii) implementation of the calibration procedure involving optimized artificial neural network (ANN) and combined multiplicative and additive correction of the low-cost sensor readings, (iii) demonstrating the efficacy of the presented technique using a custom-designed portable PM monitoring platform and reference data acquired from public measurement stations. The results obtained through comprehensive experiments conducted using the aforementioned low-cost sensor and reference data demonstrate remarkable accuracy for the calibrated sensor, with correlation coefficients of 0.86 for PM 1 and PM 2.5 , and 0.76 PM 10 (particles categorized as having diameter equal to or less than 1 μm, 2.5 μm, and 10 μm, respectively), along with low RMSE values of only 3.1, 4.1, and 4.9 µg/m3. In this paper, two motor activity datasets are utilized: " Depresjon" dataset includes activity recordings from 32 healthy individuals (402 days) and 23 individuals with unipolar and bipolar depression (291 days) and the " Psykose" dataset consists of 22 schizophrenia subjects (285 days) and 32 healthy subjects (402 days). The motor activity data, represented as time-series signals, poses challenges due to variable lengths and non-uniform starting timestamps for each subject. Additionally, the daytime and nighttime distributions differ across samples, requiring explicit handling for Convolutional Neural Network models. To address this issue, a multi-branch DL architecture is employed with one branch fed with nighttime data and another with daytime data, capable of capturing features across various scales, accommodating patterns of different sizes. Moreover, the combined outputs of these branches are subjected to a self-attention-mechanism (MultiHeadAttention), which prioritizes essential features. The use of Gradient weighted Class Activation Map (Grad-CAM) technique aids in comprehending the model's decision-making process. The benchmark datasets were used to validate the model, which exhibited an accuracy of 0.94 for both classifying depressive and schizophrenic episodes from control subjects.
