This paper introduces link information value obtained by the traffic sensors and presents a traffic sensor location and flow estimation joint optimization model in an urban road network. In contrast to most previous studies, this paper adds new traffic sensors into the existing sensor network and proposes a data-driven path flow measurement method based on Wasserstein metric, which is utilized to measure the distance between the estimated traffic flow distribution and the actual distribution. Furthermore, this paper develops a customized greedy algorithm by combining a search strategy for the link information value to obtain the optimal sensor location scheme and perform traffic flow estimation under different budget conditions. Numerical experiments are conducted on Sioux-Falls test network and Eastern Massachusetts interstate highway subnetwork to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed model based on Wasserstein metric and the developed solution method. Computational results show that the sensor location scheme generated by the model based on Wasserstein metric can reduce the estimation error of the traffic flow compared with KL divergence model under the same deployment cost. Building footprint information is crucial for comprehending global urban development processes. Deep learning algorithms have shown significant potential in building extraction from high spatial resolution imagery. However, the requirement for large-scale annotated data has been a limitation for applying deep learning methods to city-level or national-level building mapping. The dynamic change and distinct landscape variation of cities in different geographic locations further emphasizes the need for automatic building footprint extraction. In this paper, we propose a Self-supervised Knowledge Transfer (SKTrans) framework for extracting building footprints from unlabeled remote sensing images over large areas. To address building tone differences cross regions and time periods, a tone shift mechanism is introduced to reduce the contrast, brightness, and saturation differences between buildings. Furthermore, considering building style diversity across different cities, a knowledge integration module is proposed to develop a comprehensive depiction including tonal differences, multi-scale variance, structural attributes and semantic confusion between roads and buildings. The effectiveness of SKTrans is demonstrated on three public datasets of WHU, Massachusetts, and Inria. To further evaluate the feasibility of large-scale mapping for automatic building footprint, global generalization experiments cross regions and time periods, which is based on imagery from five countries of different continents were implemented. The comprehensive results demonstrate that SKTrans surpasses existing state-of-the-art methods, supporting the time-series city-level building mapping without labeled dataset. Additionally, the architectural landscape pattern changes can be quantitatively analyzed based on the generalization results to facilitate sustainable urban development. Efficient road and building footprint extraction from satellite images are predominant in many remote sensing applications. However, precise segmentation map extraction is quite challenging due to the diverse building structures camouflaged by trees, similar spectral responses between the roads and buildings, and occlusions by heterogeneous traffic over the roads. Existing convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods focus on either enriched spatial semantics learning for the building extraction or the fine-grained road topology extraction. The profound semantic information loss due to the traditional pooling mechanisms in CNN generates fragmented and disconnected road maps and poorly segmented boundaries for the densely spaced small buildings in complex surroundings. In this paper, we propose a novel attention-aware segmentation framework, Multi-Scale Supervised Dilated Multiple-Path Attention Network (MSSDMPA-Net), equipped with two new modules Dynamic Attention Map Guided Index Pooling (DAMIP) and Dynamic Attention Map Guided Spatial and Channel Attention (DAMSCA) to precisely extract the building footprints and road maps from remotely sensed images. DAMIP mines the salient features by employing a novel index pooling mechanism to retain important geometric information. On the other hand, DAMSCA simultaneously extracts the multi-scale spatial and spectral features. Besides, using dilated convolution and multi-scale deep supervision in optimizing MSSDMPA-Net helps achieve stellar performance. Experimental results over the seven benchmark building and road extraction datasets namely, Porto, Shanghai, Massachusetts Road, Massachusetts Building, Synthinel-1, WHU Satellite I and WHU aerial Imagery dataset, ensures MSSDMPA-Net as the state-of-the-art (SOTA) method for building and road extraction as our method beats the next best alternatives by 5.94%, 2.55%, 3.97%, 11.64%, 6.86%, 6.92%, 2.57% IOU and 3.98%, 1.90%, 2.43%, 7.17%, 3.98%, 4.99%, 1.37% F1 score, respectively, over the mentioned datasets. The Framingham Heart Study is the longest-running cardiovascular epidemiological study, starting in 1948. This paper gives an overview of the various cohorts, collected data, and most important research findings to date. In brief, the Framingham Heart Study, funded by the National Institutes of Health and managed by Boston University, spans 3 generations of well phenotyped White persons and 2 cohorts comprised of racial and ethnic minority groups. These cohorts are densely phenotyped, with extensive longitudinal follow-up, and they continue to provide us with important information on human cardiovascular and noncardiovascular physiology over the lifespan, as well as to identify major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Segmentation of a road portion from a satellite image is challenging due to its complex background, occlusion, shadows, clouds, and other optical artifacts. One must combine both local and global cues for an accurate and continuous/connected road network extraction. This paper proposes a model using fractional derivative-based weighted skip connections on a densely connected convolutional neural network for road segmentation. Weights corresponding to the skip connections are determined using Grunwald–Letnikov fractional derivative. Fractional derivatives being non-local in nature incorporates memory into the system and thereby combine both local and global features. Experiments have been performed on two open source widely used benchmark databases v i z. Massachusetts Road database (MRD) and Ottawa Road database (ORD). Both these datasets represent different road topography and network structure including varying road widths and complexities. Result reveals that the proposed system demonstrated better performance than the other state-of-the-art methods by achieving an F1-score of 0.748 and the mIoU of 0.787 at fractional order 0.4 on the MRD and a mIoU of 0.9062 at fractional order 0.5 on the ORD. This paper reflects upon ethnographic work carried out in a suburban Massachusetts town that has experienced particularly high rates of opioid mis/use. In open-ended conversations, residents attributed the local opioid crisis to institutional betrayals of various sorts. Building upon the idea that social capital tends to be health-enhancing, this paper traces the decline in the infrastructure of social capital and the associated decline in cultural capital or scripts for making sense out of life's challenges. Stream-observing cameras have recently been deployed in stream systems to monitor water depth dynamics. However, most existing image-based water depth monitoring methods require additional gauging equipment, extensive manual annotations, or complex manual calibration. In this paper, we propose the hierarchical model, a novel multi-modal and multi-scale deep learning framework for monitoring water depth in headwater streams with only a field camera capable of night vision and no additional equipment. In particular, the hierarchical model integrates long-term dynamic patterns extracted from large-scale meteorological data with short-term dynamic patterns extracted from small-scale stream image data to jointly monitor water depth at a fine-level temporal resolution. In order to overcome the issue of limited availability of images, we introduce a transfer learning strategy and incorporate more accurate long-term patterns that enable the hierarchical model to perform competitively even with a small number of images. We evaluate our method on a real-world headwater stream monitoring dataset from the West Brook study area in western Massachusetts, United States. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that the hierarchical model outperforms several state-of-the-art methods for water depth monitoring, and that more accurate long-term patterns can better guide the monitoring of short-term patterns with excellent flexibility and less computational cost. To assess whether a measure of leadership support for worker safety, health, and well-being predicts staff turnover in nursing homes after controlling for other factors. This paper uses administrative payroll data to measure facility-level turnover and uses a survey measure of nursing home leadership commitment to workers. In addition, we use data from Medicare to measure various nursing home characteristics. Nursing homes with at least 30 beds serving adults in California, Ohio, and Massachusetts were invited to participate in the survey. The analysis sample included 495 nursing homes. We used a multivariable ordinary least squares model with turnover rate as the dependent variable. We used an indicator for nursing homes who scored above the median on the measure of leadership that supports worker safety, health, and well-being. Control variables include bed count (deciles), ownership (corporate/noncorporate × for-profit/not-for-profit), percent of residents on Medicaid, state, being in a nonmetropolitan county, and total nurse staffing per patient day in the 2 quarters before the survey. The unadjusted turnover rate was lower for those nursing homes that scored higher on leadership commitment to worker safety, health, and well-being. After controlling for additional variables, greater leadership commitment was still associated with lower turnover but with some attenuation. We find that nursing homes with leadership that communicated and demonstrated commitment to worker safety, health, and well-being had relatively fewer nurses leave during the study period, with turnover rates approximately 10% lower than homes without. • We explore micro-features of quality across early education and care in Massachusetts. • Children in middle-income families are the least likely to attend formal settings. • Public school prekindergarten show relative strengths on some indicators. • Quality measures did not explain differences in child skills across settings. This paper uses rich, representative data from the Early Learning Study at Harvard (ELS@H) to examine the landscape of early education and care among three- and four-year-olds in one state. We examine the distribution of children in setting types, taking socio-demographic characteristics of children and families into account, investigate how micro-features of quality differ across early education and care setting types (i.e., formal and informal settings), and explore whether variation in micro-features of quality is associated with children's language, literacy, math, executive functions, and social-emotional skills across the setting types. To address these aims, we employ measures of quality that capture detailed information about adult–child interactions and the nature of daily activities. Overall, we found a slight majority of three- and four-year-olds in the state were enrolled in formal settings, with fewer children enrolled in informal settings or parental care only. We observed different patterns of enrollment in formal and informal care settings based on child and family characteristics; younger children were less likely than older children to attend formal care settings, and middle-income families were less likely to use formal care relative to lower-income and higher-income families. Moderate differences in quality across setting types were observed. Children's skills also varied across setting types. However, controlling quality features did not change these patterns, and child and family characteristics accounted for much of the variation in child skills between setting types. It is no secret that collegiality matters in academe regardless of the size and type of institution. When it comes to promotion, reappointment and tenure, the invocation of collegiality occurs. This paper aims to examine the perception and issues surrounding collegiality in the academic library setting. The data, based on the survey results of the Massachusetts public higher education librarians, reveals gender disparity on collegiality issues, attitudes and perception. Abstract Physics-based building energy models, once calibrated to historic energy data, are increasingly used to explore energy efficiency retrofits. When utilized for large building portfolios, such as university campuses, these calibrated models require substantial initial effort to develop, but are then typically only used once for analyzing potential building upgrades and estimating carbon reduction opportunities. This paper presents a continuous energy performance planning and tracking system for a university campus that automatically updates and compares measured against simulated building energy use for a hundred campus buildings. The system archives historic data, enables exploration of potential upgrade scenarios, and allows for the documentation of energy retrofits to individual buildings. The objectives of this tracking system are to support facility managers to ensure that their buildings are performing as intended, financial administrators to quantify potential energy savings and payback times of building upgrades and the overall university community to track campus-wide carbon emissions from buildings vis-à-vis previously defined reduction targets. Abstract Breaching of coastal barriers, leading to the formation of ephemeral or permanent inlets, is an essential element of coastal evolution in many parts of the world. With time, some inlets migrate or close, leaving no surface signature of their existence. The challenge of locating these channels through coring is exacerbated by high gravel content and widespread anthropogenic development. Subsurface imaging using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is often the only viable technique to overcome this limitation. GPR surveys carried out across microtidal baymouth barriers fronting salt ponds on Cape Cod, Massachusetts reveal a series of paleo-channels that lack any geomorphic expression. In some areas, channel fill comprises 50–80% of the barrier lithosome. The pre-closure dimensions of historic channels identified on charts and photographs spanning the past 170 years were measured in these subsurface records. In addition, records revealed eight previously unknown relict channel structures with widths (W) ranging between 25 and 100 m and depths (D) of 1–4 m. Based on minimum cross-sectional dimensions in GPR images, a W/D ratio of ~40 is characteristic of the natural (unstabilized) paleo-channels. This study demonstrates that the distribution and morphometry of buried channels based on high-resolution geophysical images can be used to reconstruct past equilibrium hydrodynamic conditions, with implications for locating important alongshore anomalies and assessing coastal vulnerability to breaching. Abstract This study documents the perceptions and experiences of immigrant women and men in the US related to female genital cutting (FGC). This paper examines the effects of migration on these perceptions, with the goal of optimizing health services and informing public policy to support women who have undergone FGC. This qualitative study consisted of individual interviews conducted from 2014 to 2015 with 42 women and men living in Boston, Massachusetts, who immigrated from a variety of communities where FGC has been practiced. Most participants felt strongly against the continuation of the practice, describing a change in their personal and community viewpoints over time, which they attributed to education, religion and immigration. The men in our study collectively took a stand against FGC and believed that they had a particular duty to raise awareness in their families and their communities about its physical and emotional harms. Our study provides strong support for the inclusion of men, religious leaders, and immigrants in FGC-related efforts. Our unique preliminary exploration of the role of members of the diaspora provides some support for initiatives that would involve emigrants in the effort to curb FGC in their home countries. Changing views in the diaspora could play a significant role in affecting opinions and practices in contexts where FGC is prevalent. Finally, our findings do not support the fear that "vacation cutting" might be common among US immigrants. We should therefore exercise caution in our promotion of legislation and clinical practices that target this fear. Abstract: The paper considers makespan minimization on a single machine subject to release dates in the relocation problem, originated from a resource-constrained redevelopment project in Boston. Any job consumes a certain amount of resource from a common pool at the start of its processing and returns to the pool another amount of resource at its completion. In this sense, the type of our resource constraints extends the well-known constraints on resumable resources, where the above two amounts of resource are equal for each job. In this paper, we undertake the first complexity analysis of this problem in the case of arbitrary release dates. We develop an algorithm, based on a multi-parametric dynamic programming technique (when the number of parameters that undergo enumeration of their values in the DP-procedure can be arbitrarily large). It is shown that the algorithm runs in pseudo-polynomial time when the number  of distinct release dates is bounded by a constant. This result is shown to be tight: (1) it cannot be extended to the case when is part of the input, since in this case the problem becomes strongly NP-hard, and (2) it cannot be strengthened up to designing a polynomial time algorithm for any constant , since the problem remains NP-hard for . A polynomial-time algorithm is designed for the special case where the overall contribution of each job to the resource pool is nonnegative. As a counterpart of this result, the case where the contributions of all jobs are negative is shown to be strongly NP-hard. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Using Hampshire County Council (HCC) as a case study, this paper evaluates and discusses the estimated impacts of the so-called digital switchover (DSO) (scheduled for 2012 in Hampshire) on Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in England and the UK. Two public surveys of Hampshire residents were used to collect data on their preparedness for and awareness of the switchover and its implications. The survey also sought to establish the quantities of televisions (TVs) and TV related devices that are ready for the DSO. The quantities of TV and related devices that are likely to be disposed via HCC’s collection network have been established and compared to the County’s current handling capacities for waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE). Best and worst case potential net disposal scenarios have been established and the latter compared to Government projections. In addition, the potential environmental, logistical, financial and legal impacts of the WEEE arising as a consequence of the switchover have been identified and discussed. The results indicate that the majority of TVs both in Hampshire and the UK are digital ready and that awareness of the switchover is high. In contrast, most recording devices in Hampshire are not ready for the DSO. Awareness of the timeframe of the event remains modest however and about half of Hampshire households were not aware that TV recording devices will be affected by the switchover. A significant proportion of waste TVs and related equipment would be taken to HWRCs in contrast to smaller items such as remote controls that would more likely be disposed with normal household waste. Projected figures for the DSO year show that if Hampshire maintained its current collection capacity for WEEE it would experience a handling shortfall of around ∼100K for TVs and recording devices, respectively. The most important finding of the study is that the UK Government may have substantially underestimated the quantities of TV and related devices that will be disposed during the switchover. Abstract: This special edition of the Journal of Cleaner Production celebrates the twentieth anniversary of a piece of legislation that has special significance to the environmental movement – the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Act of 1989 (TURA). Most of the papers in this issue were presented at a symposium to commemorate the twentieth anniversary that was held on November 4, 2009. Much has been written about the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Program. It has been heralded as a major pollution prevention success story. It has been lauded as a premier American example of the precautionary principle in action. It has been condemned by the American chemical industry trade association as “bad for the chemical industry”. And it has been praised by the Ford Foundation and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government as an award-receiving example of innovation in government (). Looking back now to some twenty years ago—back to the early origins of the program concept—it can be seen both as a landmark breakthrough in international chemicals policy, and as a fairly conventional next step in the political evolution of Massachusetts environmental policy. Where did this idea come from? How did it develop? How were pieces put together? Why did Massachusetts adopt such an idea into law? And how did the idea change during the early years of implementation? This paper provides a brief history of the development of the concept of toxics use reduction and the process by which it was drafted into law in Massachusetts, followed by an introduction to the articles included in this special edition and their assessment of TURA – past, present, and future. Abstract: CO2 avoidance cost economics are an essential tool for analysis of the potential for future CO2 capture and storage (CCS) utilization. The CO2 avoidance cost is the CO2 tax at which the product cost is the same for either a fossil fuel plant without CO2 mitigation (but paying the CO2 tax) or the same fossil fuel plant that includes the added capital and efficiency losses of adding CCS (but avoiding most of the CO2 tax). The CO2 tax must be higher than this CO2 avoidance cost to justify the higher risks, capital, and lower efficiency of utilizing CCS. Understanding which issues impact CO2 avoidance costs the most is fundamental to economically encouraging the massive CO2 reductions enabled with CCS. SFA Pacific recently completed two similar economic analyses of coal-based power plant CO2 mitigation costs. Both analyses included the options of converting to lower CO2 emissions with natural gas (with and without CCS) and continued coal use with and without CCS. One analysis was for an existing coal-based power plant baseline as part of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Workshop and Report entitled Retrofitting of Coal-Fired Power Plants for CO2 Emissions Reductions . The second analysis was for a new coal-based power plant baseline as part of an analysis of CO2 mitigation options by the U.S. Business Roundtable entitled The Balancing Act: Climate Change, Energy Security and the U.S. Economy . However, the resulting CO2 avoidance costs for these two analyses were very different. Specifically, the CO2 avoidance cost was about twice as high for the existing coal power plant than for the new coal power plant baseline. There are basic technical and economic reasons for this big difference in CO2 avoidance costs. They are best explained by simply showing the costs and performance of each baseline without and then with CCS in simple, transparent, and consistent one-page models. This enables easy, insightful side-by-side direct comparisons. Since first developing a cost and performance economic screening model of CCS for our GHGT-4 paper in 1998 , SFA Pacific has continued to improve the model which focuses on objectivity by stressing transparency and consistency with easy to compare cases. SFA Pacific has clearly shown identical inputs for key items such as fuel costs, non-fuel operating costs, unit capital costs, contingencies, site location factors, cost indexes, and especially capital charges. This makes it easy to see that power costs for the existing coal power plant baseline can be very low when the power plant is old and most of the existing capital is already paid-off. This GHGT-10 paper presents the most updated SFA Pacific analysis of CCS retrofit for existing coal power plant CO2 mitigation. The paper focuses on showing and explaining why the CO2 avoidance costs can be much higher for the existing plants versus new fossil fuel power plants. CO2 taxes which are high enough to discourage new coal power plants with high CO2 emissions would likely have little or no impact on existing coal power plants. Until the over 1,200 GW of existing old coal power plants begin reducing their high CO2 emissions, there can be little net reduction in worldwide CO2 growth. The need to more explicitly incorporate political economy and neoliberalism into research on social inequalities in health has been acknowledged across disciplines. This paper explores neoliberalism as it relates to consumer financial debt and internalized feelings of personal responsibility and failure for adults in Boston, Massachusetts. Using data from a mixed-methods study (n = 286), findings show that endorsing a neoliberalized view of personal debt as failure is associated with significantly worse health across a range of measures, including blood pressure, adiposity, self-reported physical and emotional symptoms, depression, anxiety, and perceived stress, even when controlling for several socio-demographic confounders. Results are discussed within the context of both neoliberal economic policies that funnel consumers into chronic debt and neoliberal sociocultural ideologies that promote self-judgments of indebtedness as personal failure. In 1963, by invitation, particle physicist George Reynolds (Princeton University) brought an image intensifier to Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory. Together, he and a group of biologists began experimenting with the device as a way to create images of cells in low-light level situations, especially in the study of bioluminescence. In this paper I am interested in how the scientists, a physicist and biologists in collaboration, assessed, interpreted and presented the pictures that they created with the aid of image intensification. In particular, I consider the problem of ‘noise’ in the image. The paper ends with an example of how Reynolds and a biologist at Woods Hole contended with the presence of noise in images used for publication. Here is an example of how data is modified, that is, enhanced, to serve as scientific evidence. By presenting an early and simple case of the altered image I reveal one way scientists addressed the potentiality of presenting inappropriately modified data – a concern that has garnered much attention in the current age of digital imaging technologies. Abstract: There is a lack of consensus as to whether the relationship between the built environment and travel is causal and, if it is, the extent of this causality. This problem is largely caused by inappropriate research designs adopted in many studies. This paper proposes a new method (based on path choice) to investigate the causal effect of the pedestrian environment on the utility of walking. Specifically, the paper examines how the pedestrian environment affects subway commuters’ egress path choice from a station to their workplaces in downtown Boston. The path-based measure is sensitive enough to capture minor differences in the environment experienced by pedestrians. More importantly, path choice is less likely to correlate with job and housing location choices, and therefore largely avoids the self-selection problem. Abstract: This paper examines the process through which early childhood developmental disability is socially created within a US public program called Early Intervention (EI). In doing so, the paper analyses and links the social creation of early childhood disability as a category at both the macro-level level and at the micro-level. The analysis is based on qualitative interview data from 31 parents and 19 professions involved in EI programs in Massachusetts. At the macro-level, the paper addresses how federal legislation and state regulations establish the boundary between normalcy and disability. At the micro-level, it analyses adults’ social creation of developmental disability, measured as impairment. The paper also investigates the impairment categories that are produced by these processes, exposing the kinds of early childhood developmental delays that have been legislated as worthy of public intervention and discusses some implications of the disability determination process. Academic detailing is an educational outreach approach to disseminate evidence-based information to health care professionals and improve clinical decision making. Pharmacists and physicians are recognized as the most qualified individuals to perform academic detailing; however, trained student pharmacists may also serve as suitable academic detailers. To describe our academic detailing intervention that used trained student pharmacists to disseminate an updated pneumococcal vaccination clinical pathway (i.e., decision-support tool) and education to community pharmacists in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. We updated an academic detailing initiative that included a pneumococcal vaccination clinical pathway and education for community pharmacists in 2021. Two University of Rhode Island (URI) College of Pharmacy pharmacist faculty members trained 6 student pharmacists to perform academic detailing. Student pharmacists visited URI-affiliated community pharmacies throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts. After each session, each participant received a 6-question anonymous paper survey to assess the effectiveness of the updated pathway and academic detailing session. The survey used a 5-point Likert-type scale. We assessed the percentage agreement with each question. Academic detailing was delivered to 76 community pharmacists from May to August 2021. Most respondents agreed (89.2%, 58/65) that their knowledge of which patient populations met eligibility for the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine or pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine improved. Respondents were confident they could apply the knowledge gained (93.8%, 61/65) and intended to apply the pathway (93.8%, 61/65) to clinical practice. Most respondents expected vaccination practices to change because of the academic detailing and education materials received (83.6%, 51/61). Almost all respondents (95.4%, 62/65) found the educational materials easy to understand. Trained student pharmacists can deliver academic detailing regarding adult pneumococcal vaccination to community pharmacists. Enlisting the help of student pharmacists may be a sustainable approach to academic detailing and provides students with valuable opportunities to practice delivering educational outreach to community pharmacists. This paper presents a case study of a recently built high-performance Canadian social housing building with the aim of comparing the expected and measured energy consumptions and to identify the parameters affecting the most the energy need. A monitoring system compiles at a 10-min frequency information related to the energy use and the thermal conditions observed in the building and its HVAC system. The building has the particularity of comprising two symmetric sections made of different timber structure systems. No significant differences of energy consumption were detected between the two parts of the buildings. However, a large variance was observed when comparing each dwelling individually regardless of their structures. The orientation of the dwelling also exhibited a minimal influence compared to these variations, suggesting that occupant behavior is the dominant factor explaining dwelling-to-dwelling variability and is thus critical for understanding energy use in residential buildings. Regression analysis showed that specific occupant actions, such as opening windows in winter or using electrical appliances, have a great impact on the energy balance of the apartments. In 2016, the performance gap between measured and expected total energy demand of the building was 74%. Background: The US is experiencing an unprecedented opioid overdose epidemic fostered in recent years by regional contamination of the heroin supply with the fentanyl family of synthetic opioids. Since 2011 opioid-related overdose deaths in the East Coast state of Massachusetts have more than tripled, with 75% of the 1374 deaths with an available toxicology positive for fentanyl. Fentanyl is 30-50X more potent than heroin and its presence makes heroin use more unpredictable. A rapid ethnographic assessment was undertaken to understand the perceptions and experiences of people who inject drugs sold as 'heroin' and to observe the drugs and their use.Methods: A team of ethnographers conducted research in northeast Massachusetts and Nashua, New Hampshire in June 2016, performing (n=38) qualitative interviews with persons who use heroin.Results: (1) The composition and appearance of heroin changed in the last four years; (2) heroin is cheaper and more widely available than before; and (3) heroin 'types' have proliferated with several products being sold as 'heroin'. These consisted of two types of heroin (alone), fentanyl (alone), and heroin-fentanyl combinations. In the absence of available toxicological information on retail-level heroin, our research noted a hierarchy of fentanyl discernment methods, with embodied effects considered most reliable in determining fentanyl's presence, followed by taste, solution appearance and powder color. This paper presents a new 'heroin' typology based on users' reports.Conclusion: Massachusetts' heroin has new appearances and is widely adulterated by fentanyl. Persons who use heroin are trying to discern the substances sold as heroin and their preferences for each form vary. The heroin typology presented is inexact but can be validated by correlating users' discernment with drug toxicological testing. If validated, this typology would be a valuable harm reduction tool. This paper examines the effect of choice architecture on Massachusetts' Health Insurance Exchange. A policy change standardized cost-sharing parameters of plans across insurers and altered information presentation. Post-change, consumers chose more generous plans and different brands, but were not more price-sensitive. We use a discrete choice model that allows the policy to affect how attributes are valued to decompose the policy's effects into a valuation effect and a product availability effect. The brand shifts are largely explained by the availability effect and the generosity shift by the valuation effect. This article focuses on how the automotive industry effectively manages the data accessibility issue for third-party vehicle repairs. First, the article reviews the key definitions and concepts that make up stakeholder theory and applies it to the automotive industry, and by employing a stakeholder synthesis approach , identifies primary and secondary stakeholders and their economic and political "stakes" in the issue. Second, it presents an analysis of the automotive industry's economic, legal/regulatory/ethical, and technical opportunities and challenges associated with data accessibility. Third, it offers a set of recommended business and public policy proposals useful in resolving the data accessibility issue necessary for the safe and effective repair of automobiles by both retail automotive dealers and independent automotive repair shops. This paper studies how to reduce the overall travel time of commuters in a transportation network by reversing the direction of some lanes in the network using a macroscopic network-wide perspective. Similar to the Network Design Problem, the lane reversal problem has been shown to be NP-hard given the dependence of the users' route selection on the lane direction decision. Herein, we propose and compare three efficient methods to solve the routing and lane reversal problem jointly. First, we introduce an alternating method that decouples the routing and lane assignment problems. Second, we propose a Frank–Wolfe method that jointly takes gradient steps to adjust both the lane assignment and routing decisions. Third, we propose a convex approximation method that uses a threshold-based approach to convexify the joint routing and lane reversal objective. The convex approximation method is advantageous since it finds a global optimum solution for the approximated problem and it enables the possibility to include linear constraints. Using this method, we extend the main formulation to be able to limit a maximum number of reversed lanes, as well as to incorporate multiple origin–destination (OD) patterns. We test the proposed methods in a case study using the transportation network of Eastern Massachusetts where our results indicate an overall reduction in travel times of 4.7% by selecting the best 15 reversals. Moreover, using a small test network, we investigate the performance of the lane reversal strategies as a function of the OD demand symmetry. As expected, we observe that when the OD demand is very asymmetric (e.g., for a single OD pair, evacuations, large events), the reduction in travel times is larger than the symmetric case, reaching travel time reductions of 60%. • Three methods are developed to identify the best lanes to reverse in a network. • One of the methods recovers the global optimal solution of an approximated problem. • A case study for Massachusetts is presented, achieving travel time reductions of 4.7%. To better understand the dynamics of human settlements, thorough knowledge of the uncertainty in geospatial built-up surface datasets is critical. While frameworks for localized accuracy assessments of categorical gridded data have been proposed to account for the spatial non-stationarity of classification accuracy, such approaches have not been applied to (binary) built-up land data. Such data differs from other data such as land cover data, due to considerable variations of built-up surface density across the rural-urban continuum resulting in switches of class imbalance, causing sparsely populated confusion matrices based on small underlying sample sizes. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by testing common agreement measures for their suitability and plausibility to measure the localized accuracy of built-up surface data. We examine the sensitivity of localized accuracy to the assessment support, as well as to the unit of analysis, and analyze the relationships between local accuracy and density / structure-related properties of built-up areas, across rural-urban trajectories and over time. Our experiments are based on the multi-temporal Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) and a reference database for the state of Massachusetts (USA). We find strong variation of suitability among commonly used agreement measures, and varying levels of sensitivity to the assessment support. We then apply our framework to assess localized GHSL data accuracy over time from 1975 to 2014. Besides increasing accuracy along the rural-urban gradient, we find that accuracy generally increases over time, mainly driven by peri-urban densification processes in our study area. Moreover, we find that localized densification measures derived from the GHSL tend to overestimate peri-urban densification processes that occurred between 1975 and 2014, due to higher levels of omission errors in the GHSL epoch 1975. • We provide a framework for localized accuracy assessment of built-up surface layers. • We assess the suitability of agreement measures for localized accuracy estimation. • We examine the sensitivity of localized accuracy estimates to the spatial support. • We apply our framework to the Global Human Settlement Layer in 1975 and 2014. • Peri-urban densification processes may drive localized accuracy increase over time. Objective Although studies suggest that employment promotes mental health, it is unclear whether this pattern extends to low-income urban women with children who are disproportionately employed in unstable jobs and often unable to obtain child care. In this paper, we consider whether becoming employed reduces symptoms of psychological distress among low-income women with children. We also assess whether having trouble securing adequate child care offsets these benefits. Study Design We use longitudinal data from the Welfare, Children, and Families project, a probability sample of low-income women with children living in Boston, Chicago, and San Antonio, to test whether becoming employed reduces symptoms of psychological distress over time and whether having trouble securing child care moderates this association. Results We find that employment is associated with lower levels of distress among women who have no trouble with child care and higher levels of distress among women who struggle with child care. Conclusion Taken together, our results suggest that valuing the benefits of paid work over unpaid work is an oversimplification and that the emphasis on placing poor women with children into paid work could be misguided. Policies that focus on moving low-income women off of government assistance and into paid work could be more effective if greater resources were devoted to increasing access to quality child care. Disparities in social determinants of health (SDOH) such as socioeconomic status and access to quality healthcare present serious barriers to enrollment in clinical rehabilitation programs for individuals who have experienced a stroke, especially for those who identify with a racial-ethnic minority group. Hispanic bilinguals with aphasia (HBWA) are one marginalized group who face even greater enrollment challenges since post-stroke language impairment and limited English proficiency make it difficult to advocate for one's needs and identify appropriate rehabilitation programs. Given the increasing representation of Hispanic individuals in the U.S. (projected to be 30% of the population in 2050), it is imperative that clinicians counter disparities in stroke care by facilitating access to clinical services for HBWA. However, the Hispanic population remains largely understudied in the stroke and aphasia literature, due in part to reduced opportunities to enroll in large-scale clinical research studies. In this paper we highlight how our team at Boston University has designed and implemented a variety of recruitment practices, assessment modifications, and treatment accommodations to circumvent the known barriers to participation in clinical research experienced by HBWA. Furthermore, we discuss the importance of cultural responsiveness and demonstrate how including principles of sensitivity and humility in clinical trial protocols improves participant enrollment and retention. Although clinical adjustments in this study were developed for use with HBWA, the effectiveness of the procedures suggests they may be useful blueprints for expanding access to research opportunities for various marginalized groups. Accumulated evidence has demonstrated that social position matters for health. Those with greater socioeconomic resources and greater perceived standing in the social hierarchy have better health than those with fewer resources and lower perceived standing. Race is another salient axis by which health is stratified in the U.S., but few studies have examined the benefit of White privilege. In this paper, we investigated how perceptions of inequality and subjective and objective social status affected the health and well-being of N = 630 White residents in three Boston neighborhoods lying on a social gradient differentiated by race, ethnicity, income and prestige. Outcomes were self-rated health, dental health, and happiness. Results suggested that: neighborhood residence was not associated with health after controlling for individual level factors (e.g., positive ratings of the neighborhood, education level); objective measures of socioeconomic status were associated with better self-reported and dental health, but subjective assessments of social position were more strongly associated; and White residents living in the two wealthiest neighborhoods, and who perceived Black families as welcome in their neighborhoods enjoyed better health than those who believed them to be less welcome. However, those who lived in the least wealthy and most diverse neighborhood fared worse when reporting Black families to be welcome. Land surface temperature (LST) variability results from diversity in urban surface materials over space and time such that locations with impervious urban cover experience higher temperature and larger temperature variation compared to non-impervious cover. There is growing awareness that warmer temperatures in urban locations negatively impact city residents by increasing heat related death and energy usage during heat waves. However, little previous work investigates the linkages between urban tree cover loss events related to invasive species eradication and urban heat trends. This paper examines the variation in LST using Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) thermal imagery in Worcester County, Massachusetts where over 30,000 trees were removed since 2008 to eradicate the invasive Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB), most of which existed in urban residential areas. Throughout the study area a 10% loss in tree canopy cover caused a 0.7 °C increase in LST whereas a 10% increase in sub-canopy impervious surface area exposed due to tree loss caused 1.66 °C increase in LST. The Burncoat and Greendale neighborhoods in northern Worcester experienced a combined 48% tree cover loss from 2008 to 2010 due to ALB eradication and an average relative LST increase of 2.4 °C (range 0.6–4.1 °C). Given that areas with an increase in exposed impervious surface produce greater temperature increases than areas of tree loss, future tree replanting efforts may focus on locations that reduce exposed impervious surfaces. Abstract: Coastal and marine spatial planning (CMSP) is a key component of the US National Ocean Policy. Efforts to implement CMSP in US federal waters are beginning in earnest. Beyond sound science and data, a stakeholder engagement process that encourages public participation, collaboration and communication between disparate groups is at the heart of effective marine spatial planning (MSP). While a rich body of literature on stakeholder engagement exists, few opportunities exist to compare different stakeholder engagement processes as they occur on the ground for a particular stakeholder group. Between 2008 and 2010 marine spatial planning efforts were conducted by the neighboring US states of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan and Rhode Island Ocean SAMP provide models for the nation in structuring effective stakeholder processes for ocean management. Within both states, commercial fishermen were identified as key stakeholders. For this study, commercial fishermen''s perceptions of the engagement process in Massachusetts and Rhode Island were examined. Specifically, this paper explores the role fishermen sought in these two pioneering MSP efforts, and the role they felt they actually played. Key findings include the need for clear communication of the role of stakeholders, stakeholder empowerment and background stakeholder analysis to understand the needs and challenges faced by participating groups. This work provided a unique opportunity to examine how each ocean planning effort engaged commercial fishermen and to reflect on lessons learned for future such initiatives in the US and beyond. Exploring effectiveness through the perceptions of primary stakeholders such as commercial fishermen further elucidates the challenges and opportunities of carrying out MSP and stakeholder processes in practice. Abstract: Objectives: Ability to understand spoken health information is an important facet of health literacy, but to date, no instrument has been available to quantify patients’ ability in this area. We sought to develop a test to assess comprehension of spoken health messages related to cancer prevention and screening to fill this gap, and a complementary test of comprehension of written health messages. Methods: We used the Sentence Verification Technique to write items based on realistic health messages about cancer prevention and screening, including media messages, clinical encounters and clinical print materials. Items were reviewed, revised, and pre-tested. Adults aged 40–70 participated in a pilot administration in Georgia, Hawaii, and Massachusetts. Results: The Cancer Message Literacy Test-Listening is self-administered via touchscreen laptop computer. No reading is required. It takes approximately 1 hour. The Cancer Message Literacy Test-Reading is self-administered on paper. It takes approximately 10min. Conclusions: These two new tests will allow researchers to assess comprehension of spoken health messages, to examine the relationship between listening and reading literacy, and to explore the impact of each form of literacy on health-related outcomes. Background: Prior research has shown a high prevalence of sexual violence against women with disabilities. However, no previous population-based studies have examined such victimization against men with disabilities. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to document the prevalence of lifetime and past-year sexual violence victimization among a representative sample of men with disabilities in Massachusetts and to compare its prevalence among men with disabilities to that of men without disabilities and women with and without disabilities. Methods: Data from the Massachusetts Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2005–2009 were analyzed in 2010 using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results: Among 25,756 survey respondents, approximately 21.1% of Massachusetts men and 21.0% of women reported a disability. The prevalence of lifetime sexual violence victimization was 13.9% (95% CI=10.7%, 17.1%) among men with disabilities; 3.7% (95% CI=2.9%, 4.5%) among men without disabilities; 26.6% (95% CI=23.4%, 29.7%) among women with disabilities; and 12.4% (95% CI=11.2%, 13.6%) among women without disabilities. Similarly, men with disabilities were more likely than men without disabilities to report lifetime completed and attempted rape and past-year sexual violence victimization. Multivariate analyses controlling for sociodemographic characteristics indicated that men with disabilities were more than four times more likely to report lifetime and past-year victimization than men without disabilities. Conclusions: Men with disabilities are at a heightened risk for lifetime and current sexual violence victimization. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The objective of this study was to characterize and understand the water quality of Boston’s Muddy River prior to restoration, to help guide those activities and evaluate their success. We use a combination of monitoring, data analysis and mathematical modeling. The seasonal pattern of temperature, pollutant signatures (identified using a principal component analysis), correlations with precipitation and spatial patterns all point to a significant wastewater input at one of the outfalls and suggest significant receiving water impact. However, a quantitative analysis using a mathematical model (QUAL2K) suggests this source is not significant. Rather, internal loading from algae, sediment bed and waterfowl dominate the spatial pattern of water quality. These results suggest significant improvement can be expected from planned sediment dredging. The paper provides a case study of water quality assessment in the context of urban river restoration, and it illustrates the utility of combining monitoring and data analysis with modeling. Abstract: Responding to extant power imbalances in the typical redevelopment process, grounded theory is introduced to aid in recalibrating development suitability models to serve the interests of underrepresented communities resisting development. Using a community-based research model, this paper reports on testing the potential of grounded theory in a low-income, primarily Latino neighborhood of Chelsea, Massachusetts (USA). After 13 iterations and a ground-truthing exercise, the research resulted in a development suitability model that offers a useful heuristic for community leaders to view development likelihood – an innovation over the conventional development suitability model by directly incorporating community issues in the model calibration. Abstract: The Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Act (TURA), one of the original pollution prevention laws, has faced repeated repeal attempts and budget cuts. Yet the Massachusetts toxics use data and other analyses have provided firm indications that the law has actually worked. Though the program has survived it is notable that an approach that both saves money and reduces pollution has been reduced and not expanded. This paper does not attempt to answer the question of why the strategies of TURA have not seen wider application, but offers four stories to illustrate what happens when they are properly applied. The experience of corporate officials who had to comply with TURA, related at a symposium on the occasion of the law’s 20th anniversary, shed light on how a strong pollution prevention law can benefit regulated companies as well as the environment and worker and public health, and provide suggestions, in addition to data and surveys, that TURA-like sets of governance tools should receive wider consideration. Abstract: Worker health and safety and environmental protection are not always considered simultaneously when attempting to reduce or eliminate hazardous materials from our environment. Cleaner Production-Pollution Prevention (CPPP), as primary prevention, has the ability to shift worker health and safety strategies from control to prevention, where exposure prevention precedes exposure control. This paper evaluates the effect of Cleaner Production-Pollution Prevention in the form of toxics use reduction (TUR) on worker health and safety at three printed wire board facilities covered under the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Act. In-depth case study analysis, including an assessment of each facility’s health and safety status, explores the root causes of the worker health and safety changes attributable to the TUR interventions. By exploring the relationship between worker health and safety and environmental protection within the corporate structure; we can identify the factors driving companies to reduce toxics both inside and outside of their plants, as a single concern. While traditionally there have been divergent paths of practice for worker health and safety and environmental protection, the two are closely connected. It is important, however, to consider the implications of risk transfer/shifting between the general and work environment. In order to avoid this risk shifting, worker health and safety perspectives and goals must be more clearly incorporated into the Cleaner Production-Pollution Prevention/TUR management system. This study opens a dialog around the effects of environmental intervention programs on worker health and safety. We realize now that while CPPP/TUR reduces exposure to toxic substances in the general environment, it also offers unique opportunities to reaffirm primary prevention principles in the work environment. Abstract: Rural landscapes around the world, including those in New England, face intense development pressures from nearby urban areas. Sustaining rural landscapes requires protecting these lands from development and continuing traditional land stewardship by local residents. Government officials and planners need to understand the attitudes and perceptions of rural residents as the first step in planning for sustainability. This paper describes two studies in rural Massachusetts that explored the hypothesis that place attachment may be an important motivation affecting residents’ attitudes toward land preservation. The first study used a photo-preference questionnaire to survey local residents about their attachment to the rural landscape, their perceptions of rural character, and their attitudes toward land protection. The second study used qualitative interviews with residents in the same region to add new insights to the survey results. Both studies found strong support by local residents for preserving rural character in their areas. Moreover, these studies found a positive correlation between local residents’ support for land protection (both in general and on their own land) and their level of attachment for scenes of rural places in their area. This research presents compelling evidence that local residents’ attachment to the rural landscape is a strong motivation for engaging in land stewardship and preservation efforts to sustain rural places and economies. Abstract: Three years into Massachusetts’ health insurance reform, we are beginning to see what that experience portends for women nationally in the wake of legislation similar to the Massachusetts model. Although the Massachusetts reform has been successful in terms of reducing the number of uninsured men and women, interviews with Massachusetts women reveal significant problems that remain to be addressed. In this paper, we offer snapshots of three women whom we interviewed on the cusp of the Massachusetts reform. None of the women had insurance at the time; thus, health care reform represents a significant improvement in their access to care. However, as these snapshots indicate, major challenges remain in terms of affordability, continuity of coverage, and systemic complexities in choosing plans. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper provides evidence on strategic interaction among public school districts in Massachusetts. The open enrollment program in Massachusetts is unique in testing the strategic competition thesis because it allows students to attend public schools located outside their home district. For each student who transfers out, funds are deducted from the sending district''s local aid distribution and added to the receiving district''s local aid. Thus, school districts no longer have the assurance of a ready supply of students and funding, instead they have to compete with neighboring districts, and enact strategies that will help retain as well as attract more students. A spatial econometric framework is applied to disentangle the correlation due to strategic interaction from the one that is simply due to spatially correlated error shocks. The results show that public school districts respond positively to the expenditure decisions of neighboring districts, thereby acting strategically when setting their own spending levels. Abstract: In this paper, we explore how the approach of optimal navigation (Cajueiro (2009) ) can be used to evaluate the centrality of a node and to characterize its role in a network. Using the subway network of Boston and the London rapid transit rail as proxies for complex networks, we show that the centrality measures inherited from the approach of optimal navigation may be considered if one desires to evaluate the centrality of the nodes using other pieces of information beyond the geometric properties of the network. Furthermore, evaluating the correlations between these inherited measures and classical measures of centralities such as the degree of a node and the characteristic path length of a node, we have found two classes of results. While for the London rapid transit rail, these inherited measures can be easily explained by these classical measures of centrality, for the Boston underground transportation system we have found nontrivial results. Abstract: This paper presents a method to assess models that predict changes among land categories between two points in time. Cross-tabulation matrices show comparisons among three maps: 1) the reference calibration map of an initial time, 2) the reference validation map of a subsequent time, and 3) the model''s predicted map of the same subsequent time. The proposed method analyzes these three maps to evaluate the ability of the model to predict land change vis-à-vis a null model, while accounting for the error in the reference maps. We illustrate this method with a prediction of land change from 1971 to 1999 in Central Massachusetts, USA. Results reveal that the land change model predicts a larger quantity of transition from forest to built than the reference maps indicate, and the model allocates the transition erroneously in space, thus causing substantial error where the model predicts built in 1999 but the reference map shows forest. If the accuracy of each category in the 1971 reference map is greater than 81 percent, then the predicted change is larger than the error in the 1971 reference map. If the accuracy of each category in the 1999 reference map is greater than 82 percent, then the model''s prediction disagreement with respect to truth is larger than the error in the 1999 reference map. Partial information concerning the accuracy of the reference maps indicates that the maps are likely to be more accurate than the 82 percent threshold. The method is designed to analyze predictions for the common situation when the levels of accuracy in the reference maps are not known precisely. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Communities across the country are increasingly considering wind power to provide municipal needs as a result of increasing energy costs and concern about atmospheric emissions; however, with uncertainty in wind conditions, most municipalities lack the expertise to evaluate these proposals without outside consultants. This paper provides a simple but robust methodology that can be used by municipalities in order to determine the economic returns of a wind proposal, allowing the community to determine the probability of success and to quantify the risks associated with the proposal. Adjustable economic parameters are initial cost, annual operating cost, interest rate, loan payback period, turbine life, and energy cost and inflation. Adjustable engineering parameters are mean annual wind speed and its standard deviation and turbine performance characteristics. A spreadsheet that performs the calculations is available from the author. A case study performed for the Town of Dartmouth, Massachusetts illustrates the methodology. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Communities with environmental health concerns in the USA frequently request studies from their local or state departments of public health. This paper presents findings from three focus groups conducted in communities north of Boston that have been the subject of two different environmental health studies. The focus groups were designed to elicit residents' perceptions of environmental health, and of the particular studies conducted in their communities. In all focus groups, participants had difficulty accepting the findings of health studies that contradicted their own experiences of environmental exposures and illness. Our results suggest that lay knowledge, informed in varying degrees by the experience of what we term “tangible evidence,” creates a lens through which communities interpret a health study's findings. The differences in reliance on tangible evidence were related to participants' sense of trust in public officials, and the institutions responsible for conducting health studies. Participants from the wealthier, predominantly white communities discussed trust in study design and methodologies used. In contrast, participants from the lower-income, higher-minority communities assessed health studies with reference to their trust (or lack thereof) in study sponsors and public health institutions. Participants' experience of tangible evidence, trust or distrust in health agencies and research institutions, and a sense of relative community power, influence how they assess the findings of environmental health studies and may have implications for pubic health. The design and implementation of a cathodic protection system for offshore steel monopiles used to support wind turbines are required to protect them from corrosion. This paper uses the recommended practice DNVGL-RP-B401-Cathodic Protection Design to demonstrate the step-by-step sacrificial anode cathodic protection system design of an offshore monopile located off the coast of Massachusetts. Abstract: High-technology/knowledge-intensive industries have become of increasing importance as sources of job growth and revenue to communities seeking to develop their economies. Communities want these industries so that they can be as economically vigorous as possible. However, although high-tech industries such as biotechnology are coveted as drivers of economic development, the local development impact of these clusters of regional innovation is not entirely positive. This is especially true with regard to the impact upon the low and semi-skilled populations. In some regions, the new growth generated by high-tech clusters has converted relatively inexpensive open space into haphazard commercial and industrial use that has contributed to sprawl, transportation congestion, lack of affordable housing, and gentrification. These problems are particularly evident in the Boston and San Diego metropolitan areas, which rank as the second and third largest U.S. biotechnology clusters respectively. This paper seeks to gauge the local economic development impact—especially with regard to the labor and real estate markets—of the biotechnology clusters in the San Diego and Boston metropolitan areas. Abstract: The infrastructure renewal program at MIT consists of a large number of projects with an estimated budget that could approach $1 billion. Infrastructure renewal at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the process of evaluating and investing in the maintenance of facility systems and basic structure to preserve existing campus buildings. The selection and prioritization of projects must be addressed with a systematic method for the optimal allocation of funds and other resources. This paper presents a case study of a prioritization method utilizing multi-attribute utility theory. This method was developed at MIT''s Department of Nuclear Engineering and was deployed by the Department of Facilities after appropriate modifications were implemented to address the idiosyncrasies of infrastructure renewal projects and the competing criteria and constraints that influence the judgment of the decision-makers. Such criteria include minimization of risk, optimization of economic impact, and coordination with academic policies, programs, and operations of the Institute. A brief overview of the method is presented, as well as the results of its application to the prioritization of infrastructure renewal projects. Results of workshops held at MIT with the participation of stakeholders demonstrate the feasibility of the prioritization method and the usefulness of this approach. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
