The linear and nonlinear optical properties of a series of arylvinyldiazine derivatives are investigated by means of quantum chemical first principles calculations. The UV/vis absorption spectra of the various derivatives, as well as the NLO properties previously characterized by means of EFISHG measurements, are well reproduced by the theoretical computations. The reported results provide complementary insights on the structure–properties relationships linking the nature of the chemical substituents and of the conjugated π-electron system that constitute the push–pull structure to the amplitude of the NLO responses. Abstract: A joint experimental and theoretical study is carried out to investigate the structural and absorption properties of the C212 organic dye adsorbed onto the TiO2 anatase surface. UV–Vis measurements evidence a significant blue shift of the main absorption band of the dye upon absorption, which is well reproduced by theoretical calculations combining tight-binding and time-dependent DFT calculations. The blue shift is substantiated by a loss in the efficiency of the light-induced charge transfer along the anchored dye, which partly originates from the deprotonation of the carboxylic acid function. Abstract: A new soluble n-type material based on the 2,9-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)triphenodioxazine (TIPS-triphenodioxazine) has been designed as a quinonoid equivalent of TIPS-pentacene and synthesized using an innovative synthetic pathway. Both materials showed identical electronic affinities, intermolecular arrangements and thin film topographies. However, the TIPS-triphenodioxazine led to better performances than TIPS-pentacene in n-channel organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) evidencing the potentialities of this π-conjugated core in the field of organic electronics. 6. Second-order nonlinear optical properties of [formula omitted]-shaped pyrazine derivatives.

The linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a series of Λ -shaped derivatives containing a 4,5-dicyanopyrazine acceptor unit, N,N -dimethylamino donor groups and systematically enlarged π-conjugated linkers are investigated by means of UV/Visible and Hyper-Rayleigh scattering spectroscopies. Density functional theory calculations are also carried out to rationalize the magnitude and symmetry of the NLO responses. The results demonstrate that these compounds possess two low-lying excited electronic states close to each other in energy, which are accessible through one-photon optical transitions respectively polarized perpendicular and parallel to the two-fold molecular axis. These two states contribute additively to the first hyperpolarizability, which exhibits a dominant dipolar character. We also show that the NLO responses significantly deviate from Kleinman's index permutation symmetry. • Λ -shaped pyrazine derivatives deliver strong second-order NLO responses. • They result from the contribution of low-lying perpendicular electronic transitions. • The first hyperpolarizabilities are not Kleinman-symmetric. • These second-order NLO responses have a dominant dipolar character. • Their amplitudes depend on the nature of the π-conjugated linkers. 7. Enhancing two-photon uncaging sensitivity in symmetrical dimeric conjugated coumarin cages: Role of the coupling core.

[Display omitted] • Uncaging efficiency is retained in dimeric DEAC conjugated structures. • Two-photon absorption properties (2PA) are enhanced by up to two order of magnitude. • The aromatic cores influence both the uncaging efficiency and the 2PA properties. • Both electron-releasing and electron-withdrawing cores lead to unprecedented 2P uncaging sensitivities (550 GM). A series of symmetrical conjugated dimeric coumarinyl cages has been synthesized by grafting 7-diethlyaminocoumarin (DEAC) cages via π-linkers onto different aromatic cores displaying various electronic character (electron-withdrawing: benzobisthiazole BBTz, electron-donating: carbazole or ambivalent: fluorenyl). Due to their symmetrical design, all conjugated dimeric derivatives showed enhanced two-photon absorption at 730 nm, the electron-withdrawing core leading to the highest response (over 3000 GM). All dimeric derivatives retained the uncaging ability of the DEAC cage, with a strong influence of the nature of the core on the uncaging quantum yield. While the fluorenyl core led to an uncaging quantum yield similar to DEAC, the BBTz core led to a twice larger uncaging quantum yield and the carbazole core to even larger uncaging quantum yield (60 %). As a result, both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing cores lead to symmetrical dimeric DEAC derivatives showing unprecedented two-photon uncaging photo-sensitivity (up to 550 GM). Model solutions of white wines containing phenolic acids have been investigated by means of UV–vis, laser induced fluorescence and Raman spectroscopic techniques. In order to interpret the spectra, density functional theory calculations of phenolic acids have been performed. This work demonstrates that only hydroxynamic acids are in resonance with a laser excitation line with 325 nm wavelength and are therefore at the origin of the strong enhancement of the Raman light scattering. Real white wines also display such resonance Raman scattering so that their content in hydroxycinnamic acids may be quite precisely determined. The analysis of the Raman spectrum of a real dry white wine reveals qualitatively the preponderance in its composition of p-coumaric and caftaric acids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] • Synthesis of molecular photoswitches based on 2-substituted N H and N CH 3 imidazole. • Tuning of switching properties by preventing imidazole tautomerism and benzene substitution. • Pentafluorosulfanyl derivative showed the highest stability of the (Z)–isomer. • Insertion of SF 5 group proved to be useful strategy towards a bistable photoswitch. Azo–imidazole photoswitches based on N H– and N –methylimidazole were designed and prepared via a convenient synthetic route. These azo-compounds were investigated by means of XRD analysis, cyclic voltammetry, thermal analysis, UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculations. The photoswitching was mostly affected by imidazole N -substitution with the half-life of (Z)–isomers found within the range of tens of seconds (N H-imidazoles) vs. tens of hours (N -methylimidazoles). N -Methylimidazole switches can be further tuned by altering electronic effects of the appended substituents (acyl, bromine, trifluoromethyl and pentafluorosulfanyl). The latter group proved to be particularly interesting in stabilizing (Z)–isomer. Its large half-life (∼24 h), high photoconversion (89 %) and diminished nonlinear optical response in contrast to the (E)-isomer (β E / Z = 3.82) point to a very useful strategy in introducing SF 5 group in the structure of molecular switches. In summary, this detailed study demonstrates that photoswitching properties of azo-imidazoles can be significantly tuned in a broad extent by (preventing) imidazole tautomerism as well as by altering electronic effects of appended substituents. The linear and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of clickable azobenzene derivatives are investigated in chloroform solution by means of UV/Visible and Hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) spectroscopies. Their absorption properties are also monitored along time in order to characterize the rate and kinetics of the E-Z photoswitching reaction. The magnitude and symmetry of the first hyperpolarizability of the compounds are rationalized with the help of DFT calculations, which support well the experimental data. We demonstrate that the second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity of the E form, as well as its variation upon photoisomerization, can be tuned by varying the nature of the peripheral substituents. A fully characterized library of ready-to-click switchable compounds displaying large hyperpolarizability contrasts, and differing in the amplitude and orientation in their dipole moments is provided. This library expands the database of photoswitching compounds for further anchorage into polymer matrices or nano- or micro-sized solid substrates. Abstract The synthesis and the characterization of the linear and second-order nonlinear optical properties are reported for a new derivative of the indolino-oxazolidine family, which exploits the strong donor capacity of the ferrocenyl unit. Hyper-Rayleigh scattering experiments show that the pH-triggered switching between the closed and protonated open form of this compound enhances the first hyperpolarizability by roughly a factor 5, as a result of the increase of the push-pull π -electron conjugation within the molecule, between the donor ferrocenyl unit and the acceptor indoleninium moiety. Although derivatives exhibiting larger β responses in their nonlinear optical active form and larger β P O F / β C F contrasts were previously reported within this class of materials, the figure of merit of this ferrocenyl-based compound is high enough for device application. Quantum chemical calculations of the linear and nonlinear optical properties are at least in qualitative agreement with the experimental trends. Calculations also show that β of the protonated open form originates from two low-lying excited states, of which the contributions partly cancel each other due to the opposite directions of the photo-excited charge transfer. The electronic and optical properties of a large series of symmetrical D– π –A– π –D chromophores are investigated. Vertical transition energies and related wavelengths, as well as absorption strengths, are computed by means of density functional theory and analyzed in the light of structural and electronic parameters such as torsional angles, bond length alternation, ground-state charge transfer and photo-induced charge displacement. This computational design allows establishing structure-property relationships linking the chemical structure of the chromophores to their absorption capability in the near-infrared (NIR) region, providing comparative guidelines for eventual syntheses. TDDFT calculations are associated to an extrapolation scheme to predict the optical properties of twelve donor-acceptor copolymers, in which carbazole, benzodithiophene or cyclopentadithiophene donor subunits are combined to benzofurazane, benzothiadiazole or diketopyrrolopyrrole acceptor moieties. Relative excitation energies and absorption strengths are rationalized in terms of geometrical, electronic and optical descriptors. It is shown that the combination of a cyclopentadithiophene with a diketopyrrolopyrrole leads to the lowest excitation energy and highest light absorption efficiency within the series. However, combining cyclopentadithiophene and benzodithiophene subunits appears as more efficient for solar cell applications due to better energy level alignment with respect to PCBM. We describe the synthesis and spectroscopic study of the bichromophoric molecule DA-meso consisting of two boron difluoride curcuminoid (BF 2 -curcuminoid) units tethered by the rigid diacetylenic bridge. This structural feature imparts the quadrupolar-like DA-meso with a strong ability to self-assemble in solution, which induces a profound change in the optical properties. The UV–vis absorption spectrum of the aggregate is characterized by the appearance of a redshifted band at low energy and its fluorescence emission occurs in the near infrared (λ max = 700 nm) with a low quantum yield (5%). This is in contradiction with the strong emission expected for J-aggregates considering the Frenkel exciton model. From concentration-dependent UV–vis absorption spectroscopy we demonstrate the formation of a dimer composed of four BF 2 -curcuminoid units. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure analysis and in-depth quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and subsequent decomposition of the electronic excited states on a diabatic basis enable to discuss the geometry of the DA-meso dimer, and to establish the presence of excited states close in energy to that of the unperturbed monochromophore, which are not predicted by the classical Frenkel exciton model. Different dimer structures characterized by π-stacks of two and up to four chromophores are investigated, in which low-lying excited states with vanishing oscillator strength are found to be redshifted with respect to the lowest-energy allowed state of the aggregate. From these experimental and theoretical data, the spectral features of the DA-meso dimer are rationalized by considering the formation of a "non-fluorescent J-aggregate", illustrating the trend in non-Kasha behavior observed for quadrupolar-like dyes. • Two boron difluoride curcuminoid dye units are linked by a diacetylenic bridge. • The bichromophoric system self-assembles into a dimer in solution. • Absorption and fluorescence spectra are red shifted. • Quantum chemical calculations give energies of adiabatic excited states of aggregates. • A non-fluorescent J-aggregate results from the interaction between quadrupolar dyes. In the design of non-linear optical chromophores, the conjugation pathways in multi-branched dyes are known to influence heavily their optical properties. Herein, we investigate this strategy for the design of two-photon (2P) responsive photolabile protecting groups (PPG) by assembling via a triphenylamine core extended coumarinylmethyl derivatives. The experimental study reveals an enhancement of the 2P absorption in the tri-branched compound, but a strikingly different photophysics behaviour resulting in a decrease in bond cleavage efficiency, and aggregation in aqueous acetonitrile. These combined effects results in much poorer 2P uncaging efficiency of the three-branched derivatives. In contrast, the corresponding mono-branched coumarin exhibit very high 2P photochemical efficiency (450 GM). Abstract: The [4+2] cyclodimerization of cyclohexa-2,4-dienone derivatives of the orthoquinone monoketal and orthoquinol types has been the topic of numerous investigations over the last 50 years in the aim of rationalizing the extraordinary level of regio-, site-, and stereoselectivities observed in these processes. In particular, the double diastereo-π-facial differentiation expressed in cyclodimerizations of chiral orthoquinols (i.e., 6-alkyl-6-hydroxycyclohexa-2,4-dienones) is an important aspect of these transformations, for they relate to the construction of several natural products. The experimental and theoretical results that are described in this article offer a comprehensive understanding of the factors controlling these site-specific regio- and diastereoselectivities. Our interpretation of these results relies on a combination of Woodward–Hoffmann and Salem–Houk secondary orbital interactions and Cieplak-type hyperconjugative effects in bispericyclic C2-symmetric transition states. Abstract: This theoretical Letter addresses the non-linear optical properties of a series of substituted dimethylaminophenylethylenyl-indolino[2,1-b]oxazolidine derivatives, which were recently shown to behave as multiaddressable NLO switches. The influence of the chemical nature of the substituent on the static and dynamic first hyperpolarizability, as well as of its grafting location, is investigated by using various semi-empirical and high level ab initio schemes. It is found that a para-substitution on the indolinic skeleton with a [(N,N-1,3-dimethylpyrimidine-2,4,6-trione)-5-yl]methylidenyl group should increase by 75% the efficiency of the switches.
