For the first time, high quality factor (Q), meander inductors are demonstrated utilizing inkjet-printing on organic paper substrates. Quality factors of up to 25, which is an order of magnitude greater than previous works, and inductance values of up to 8 nH are achieved. The high self-resonance frequency (SRF) of 8 GHz makes it possible for the inductors to be used in the 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz RFID bands, and in 5 GHz Wifi band. Furthermore, a study into the performance and miniaturization effects of inkjet-printing ferromagnetic nanomaterial onto the inductors shows increases in inductance of up to 5%. This paper proposes a systematic method for the identification of the load circuit parameters (say the $\boldsymbol{R}$ , $\boldsymbol{L}$ , and $\boldsymbol{C}$ elements) based only on the information of the instantaneous voltage and current measured at the point of common coupling (pcc). Geometric Algebra (GA) and concepts of differential geometry are used to produce a rigorous mathematical framework. The identification is formulated as a multidimensional geometrical problem that is solved conveniently by means of GA. Once the passive elements of the load have been identified, the active and reactive powers can be computed from first electromagnetic principles (Maxwell Equations). The theory is general and is verified with linear and nonlinear circuits. The paper shows single-phase circuits but the theory can be extended to three-phase circuits. The method is easy to program and has shown to be very robust for all tested cases. Because of its generality, the method presented will find applications beyond electric circuits. Titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) is a well-known source of titanium (Ti) for the formation of titanium nitride (TiN) barrier material in the semiconductor interconnection process; however, the reaction of by-products with airborne molecules can cause unexpected pump trips and equipment breakdown from the by-product powder build-up. Plasma scrubbers are used to decompose by-products, but hydrogen chloride (HCl) and nitrogen oxides are produced during and after the process. The process mechanisms change when the temperature and applied power of the heat source change. In this paper, we study the influence of the reactor temperature and applied power to the heat source on the decomposition capacity of TiCl4 in a plasma pretreatment system (PPS). We examine the effect of the temperature and heat source power to understand the reaction mechanisms for the composition and decomposition of gaseous species with chemical reactions through simultaneous methods. We analyzed the system with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and chemical kinetic simulation to investigate the changes of the system mechanism. Subsequently, we achieved results for the correlation between the temperature of the reactor, power applied to the heat source, composition and decomposition of species, and chemical reaction mechanisms. The fourteen papers in this special section focus on high performance light emitting diode (LED) drivers. In recent years, as the fourth generation of light source, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been widely used in many applications such as street lighting, automotive, and residential lighting because of their long lifetime, low maintenance requirement, and environment friendliness. As the performance of LEDs will be influenced obviously by the drivers, researchers have shown a growing interest in optimizing the drivers. Although these problems such as current balancing, eliminating electrolytic capacitor, and improving the topologies are not new, the high-frequency high-efficiency trend of LED drivers has given rise to additional challenges. This paper is aimed to compare the performance of toroidal inductors and planar spiral inductors in multilayered technologies, in terms of achievable inductance density. The optimization of planar toroidal inductors in multilayered substrates is investigated theoretically, and closed formulae are derived for their inductances as a function of geometrical parameters. The obtained model is validated by experimental results and electromagnetic simulation. From the comparison of the inductance of toroidal inductors and compact spiral inductors, a selection rule is proposed to choose the most suitable topology that leads to the most compact design. This paper proposes an adaptive self-tuned current controller design for an LCL-filtered LC-tuned single-phase shunt hybrid active power filter (HAPF), which offers adaptability and flexibility of the control system to filter parameters changes. System modelling and online identification of parameters are presented. Then, a systematic self-tuned controller (STC) design is proposed to calculate the controller parameters and obtain the final control law adaptively. The exact HAPF parameters design is described and the overall closed-loop stability evaluation with considering digital control delay is discussed in this paper. To confirm the theoretical achievements, simulations and experimental tests on a real prototype system are performed. The results are in good accordance and demonstrate the effectiveness and superior performance of the suggested control technique. Furthermore, a comprehensive comparison between the proposed control technique and other controllers is provided to show the superiority of the proposed system from different aspects. In renewable energy micro-source applications, a wide range of voltage conversion of the step-up converter is an essential part to equalize the typical low voltage of micro-source with DC-bus voltage of Inverter or motor drives. In order to meet this purpose, an ultra-voltage gain step-up DC-DC converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter has made an arrangement of the regenerative-boost fed switched inductor and capacitor configurations. Thereby, due to such an organization of structure, the proposed converter can develop an extremely high voltage-gain even at lower duty ratios. In addition, it has the advantage of lower switching stress across all power semi-conductive diodes. Furthermore, this paper describes the steady-state analysis and comparative features of the converter with existing recent literature. Finally, to validate theoretical analysis and test the feasibility and suitability of the proposed ultra-gain converter, the experimental results were observed by a 500 W fabricated prototype. This paper analyzes the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC caused by parametric uncertainty. The unsymmetrical operation is referred to as the condition in which parameters involved in ac power generation are not equal in the phase-legs of the converter. Because existing models in the literature cannot exhibit the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC, new detailed and simplified steady-state models are developed in this paper. In the developed models, the connection between the operation of different phase-legs shows itself when the dc-link impedance is considered. Using the developed models, the parameters that can force the converter to operate in unsymmetrical conditions are identified, and the maximum variation that the converter can tolerate is found. It is shown that even a small parameter variation leads to the leakage of the ac circulating current into the dc-link, which is not acceptable. By conducting various case studies, the impacts of the dc-link length, the transmitted power, and the conversion ratio on the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC are characterized. The results showed that the converter would be more sensitive to the parameter variation as these parameters increase. In a previous paper, we introduced a modified Steinmetz equation to account for dc-bias field effects, which requires only a simple dc permeability measurement to predict total power loss. In this paper, we expanded our investigation to include Finemet nanocrystalline material and found that our modified Steinmetz formalism was effective in predicting dc-bias-related losses for this system as well. In this paper, it was observed that Finemet cores exhibit lower losses than Metglas cores under identical test frequencies and bias fields. In addition, we show that a full characterization of the dc loss component necessitates the consideration of higher order ( $n>1$ ) harmonic components. In order to quantify these higher frequency loss components, a dc–dc converter-based test system was built to intentionally introduce inductor current harmonics by varying the filter capacitance and parasitic inductance of the test system. Both core types were evaluated under fundamental frequencies of 20 to 150 kHz and dc-bias fields of up to 1.3 kA/m, with the inclusion of distorted waveforms obtained by varying filter capacitance. At higher frequencies, the Metglas cores were found to exhibit greater loss fractions associated with the higher order harmonic components. A detailed summary of the measured core loss characteristics for both core types is included and discussed. The quantitative analysis of the iron loss taking magnetic hysteresis behavior into account is essential for the development of high-efficiency electric machines. In a previous paper, a novel magnetic circuit model incorporating a play model, which is one of the phenomenological models of magnetic hysteresis, was proposed. It was clear that the proposed model can calculate the hysteresis loop of a ring core with high speed and high accuracy. However, this method was applied only for the objects with simple shapes. Thus, it is necessary to extend the applicable range for the objects with more complicated shapes. This paper presents a novel reluctance network analysis (RNA) model incorporating the play model and indicates the validity of the proposed RNA model by using a three-phase-laminated-core variable inductor as an object of discussion. As part of the ongoing China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) studies, this work focused on the study of the electromagnetic (EM) loads distribution on inboard (IB) and outboard (OB) blanket vertical segments. In this paper, a major central disruption scenario with a 36-ms linear current quench was performed in the ANSYS finite element software. EM forces and moments, both on the single module and the complete blanket segment, were calculated for the updated helium-cooled ceramic breeder (HCCB) blanket. Furthermore, the effect of EM loads with respect to poloidal segmentations on the back plate (BP) was studied. Results show that the EM forces and moments in the IB blanket barely changed, but in the OB blanket, great changes occurred. With poloidal segmentations increasing, EM forces loads on the BP will be reduced. This paper has introduced two important indexes, turn-off surge voltage (TSV) on power switch and peak positive pole potential (PPPP) of storage batteries, which can be used to evaluate switching transient process of high-voltage energy storage system. Research on them is of great significance to power switch choice and high-voltage isolation design in engineering applications. Power switch response process at the turning off moment and transient process in freewheel stage have been analyzed by the established small-signal model of single power switch; then, a power switch test platform for hybrid energy storage system was built to verify it. Taking pulsed-power supply charging device with a novel inductor of low resistance and high inductance as a research object, this paper has analyzed dynamic process of the TSV and the PPPP at the turning off moment through establishing state space model of the whole system. Comparison shows that the numerical curves match the simulated curves well. Finally, the exactness of the employed model has been further verified in two pulse capacitor charging experiments. Recent research in the field of 3-D system integration has looked to the use of inductive-coupling links (ICLs) to provide vertical connectivity without incurring the inflated fabrication and testing costs associated with through-silicon vias. For power-efficient ICL design, optimization of the utilized physical inductor geometries is essential, but currently must be performed manually in a process that can take several hours. As a result, the generation of optimized inductor designs poses a significant challenge. In this paper, we address this challenge in three main contributions: 1) a novel, nonuniform planar inductor layout that exhibits enhanced performance when compared with conventional uniform inductors; 2) a rapid solver for evaluating inductor layouts; and 3) a high-speed optimization algorithm for determining best performing coil pairs. These three contributions are combined as a CAD tool for optimization of ICLs for 3-D-ICs (COIL-3-D). Results demonstrate that COIL-3-D achieves an average accuracy within 7.8% of finite-element tools consuming a small fraction of the time ($1.5\times 10^{-3}$ %), significantly ameliorating the design of ICL-based 3-D-ICs. We also demonstrate that using COIL-3-D to optimize ICL inductor layouts can yield significant performance (up to 41.5% bandwidth improvement) and power (up to 8.1% power improvement) benefits, when compared with layouts used in prior ICL implementations. In this paper, a new configuration of dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) reactor with three electrodes was manufactured and used to produce ozone. Designed flatly, this reactor is capable of establishing three different discharge modes from type of the volume and surface discharges, without modifying its internal structure. The aim of presenting this paper is to experimentally analyze the three discharge modes and their combination using a second channel to produce ozone. The two reactor channels are identical in terms of dimensions, material, and manufacturing process. Two frequency-adjustable pulse generators of the same electrical characteristics and two high-voltage transformers were used in the course of the experiments. The applied sinusoidal voltage is from 0 to 12 kVp-p. The frequency range was determined and fixed for all three discharge modes for the highest ozone concentration at a fluctuation rate of 1 L/min. Effects of increasing the applied voltage on the obtained concentration from the three different discharge modes were experimentally analyzed. Using the provided inlets–outlets, the effect of flowing gas through the length and width of the discharge area on ozone concentration was investigated, and appropriate flow directions were determined for the flowing gas under either of the three discharge modes. Experimentally results have been done for this three discharge modes as well as hybrid modes. The maximum ozone production rate achieved up to 14.52 g/h in the series combination of two different volume discharge. At 96% oxygen purity, ozone production yield, in two modes volume discharge VaDBD and surface discharge SDBD, have been improved up to 529.87 g/kWh. Mobile, wearable, and Internet-of-Things (IOT) electronic systems are typically powered by a single-cell lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. Increasing demand for battery life and the constraint of the overall platform size impose an emerging desire for an efficient and compact power conversion stage that can directly deliver power from the battery, which ranges from 3.2 to 4.2 V, to the supplies of application/communication processors in the range of 1 V. The switched capacitor (SC) converter, though promising in some ways for this application, is inefficient at voltage regulation and is limited in capacitor utilization. This paper presents a hybrid dc–dc converter topology that eliminates charge sharing losses with a small inductor. The necessary inductance can be realized by PCB traces, which shows the potential for a compact system-in-package (SiP) solution. The designed converter is implemented in Texas Instruments’ 0.15- $\mu \text{m}$ CMOS process with a nominal 3:1 conversion ratio. It supports a 3.2–4.2-V input voltage with a continuous output regulation of 0.8–1.5 V. The peak efficiency is 87.2% with 83.4% efficiency at a power density of 0.46 W/mm2. This paper also presents an effective methodology of developing the large-signal model and small-signal dynamics for the generalized N:1 converter topology. A tight load line-based controller is integrated into the designed chip and experimentally verified with a transient performance of 50-mV voltage overshoot/undershoot under 400-mA on-die load step. In the paper by Patra et al., a single-inductor multiple-output switcher was presented to produce buck, boost, and inverted outputs simultaneously. Unfortunately, this study showed some unexpected mistakes, especially in state-space equations and in the calculation of output voltages. The objective of this note was to provide correct analysis and rectify the errors in this paper. Some tables and equations have been modified that were present in the initial draft of this paper. In inertial confinement fusion, the scientific issues include the generation and transport of driver energy, the pellet design, the uniform target implosion physics, and the realistic nuclear fusion reactor design. In this paper, we present a pellet injection into a power reactor in heavy-ion inertial fusion (HIF). We employ a magnetic correction method to reduce the pellet alignment error in HIF reactor chamber, including the gravity, the reactor gas drag force, and the injection errors. We found that the magnetic correction device proposed in this paper is effective to construct a robust pellet injection system with a sufficiently small pellet alignment error. This paper addresses the mechanisms of wideband power amplifiers’ efficiency degradation in comparison with their narrowband operation. It starts by identifying some possible causes for this performance degradation, showing that the baseband terminations are dominant. A detailed explanation for the efficiency degradation is then presented, considering the scenarios where the most important baseband components fall before or after the resonance imposed by the bias and matching networks. A theoretical model that is able to describe this performance degradation is also presented. Finally, the proposed theory is validated through two implemented power amplifiers with the same fundamental and harmonic terminations, but with different baseband networks, showing that an optimized bias network design can improve the efficiency performance of a PA. In this paper, surrogate modeling techniques are applied for passive component modeling. These techniques are exploited to develop and compare two alternative strategies for automated radio-frequency circuit design. The first one is a traditional approach where passive components are designed during the optimization stage. The second one, inspired on bottom-up circuit design methodologies, builds passive component Pareto-optimal fronts (POFs) prior to any circuit optimization. Afterward, these POFs are used as an optimized library from where the passive components are selected. This paper exploits the advantages of evolutionary computation algorithms in order to efficiently explore the circuit design space, and the accuracy and efficiency of surrogate models to model passive components. This paper will describe the influence of mesh geometry on the homogeneity of discharges, power, and efficiency of ozone generation. Homogeneous discharges increase the efficiency of the generation of ozone. Geometry of mesh electrodes affects the power and type of discharges, concentration, and efficiency of the ozone generation. The analysis of selected results indicates the need for the use of mesh electrodes with a small cross section at least $0.1\times0.1$ mm2 mesh to obtain a homogeneous discharge. The mechanism by which the geometry of mesh electrodes on the homogeneity of discharge is illustrated in this paper. Homogeneous discharges increase the efficiency of the generation of ozone that reduces the cost of ozone production. The results of the experimental studies show an increase in the average efficiency of 60% of the ozone generation and a 20% reduction in the demand for power with the constant concentration of ozone, justifies the problem. Aiming at the fault traveling wave on the LCC-MMC HVDC transmission line, this paper analyzed its reflection and refraction characteristics at the DC buses and the fault point, plotted its propagation grid diagrams, obtained the relationship between the polarity of fault traveling wave and the boundary elements, and drew the conclusion that when the impedance of DC filter is far less than the wave impedance of transmission line, the existing fault location methods that need to distinguish these two waves according to their polarities are not applicable to the LCC-MMC HVDC system. On these bases, this paper proposed a modal traveling wave arrival time difference-based location principle for pole-to-ground fault, and a fault traveling wave propagation path ratio-based location principle for pole-to-pole fault, these principles neither need to identify the wave polarity, nor need the wave velocity value. In order to better extract the wave heads and their arrival time, this paper pre-treated the sampling data to make sure all the wave heads are extracted from the same frequency band, then the wave heads and their arrival time can be extracted with the empirical mode decomposition. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used in street lighting, landscape lighting, liquid crystal display (LCD) backlighting, healthcare, etc. As an important part of LED lighting products, LED driver plays a vital role in maintenance costs reduction, energy saving and lifetime prolongation. In this paper, a single-stage LED driver is proposed, which is integrated by a totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) unit and several modular LCL-T resonant rectifiers. The totem-pole bridgeless PFC unit and the LCL-T resonant rectifiers are integrated by sharing switches, which can simplify the circuit and reduce the system cost. The output current can be regulated by applying the variable inductor control. Constant duty cycle and fixed switching frequency operation can be achieved as well. The operating principle and the performance of the proposed converter are analyzed in this paper. In addition, a precise parameter design method is proposed by considering the high-order harmonics. This paper presents a new spiral inductor based on substrate integrated suspended line (SISL) technology. SISL is a new type of transmission line, which has many merits, such as low loss, low dispersion, and self-packaging. New series of spiral inductors based on this advanced SISL platform is proposed and modeled in this paper. SISL to microstrip transition is designed for the measurement of the SISL inductor, and an open-short deembedding method is introduced for the accurate extraction of inductor network parameters. A $\pi$ equivalent circuit model is applied for modeling of the SISL inductor and new double-sided SISL (DSISL) inductor, and the accurate empirical expression of inductance L$ , peak quality factor Q_{\mathrm {max}} , and self-resonance frequency are given. The typical relative error of each expression is less than 8%. Finally, a new DSISL inductor with patterned substrate is proposed, which can significantly improve the quality factor up to 40%. This paper describes experimental verification of single-phase variable inductor prototypes rated at 2.4 kVAr (75 mH, 10 A, 230 V, 24 kg) and 12 kVAr (43 mH, 30 A, 400 V, 78 kg). Results for much smaller devices rated at 1-10 Var are also shown. The variability of inductance of the main AC winding was achieved by adding a DC winding, wound through the apertures placed symmetrically in the core such that both windings were magnetically orthogonal. Local saturation caused by the magnetic field due to DC winding creates virtual air gaps. This method is capable of lowering the main inductance by over 90% if no real air gap is present, but for industrial applications the range of variability is likely to be closer to 20-30% range, depending on the size of the real air gap in the magnetic circuit. The amount of variation/control can be improved by using more than one control winding. Very good repeatability of performance was observed, with relatively small total harmonic distortion introduced due to control. The experimental findings agree with a generalised analytical model. Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. The main standard for avionic equipment DO-160G defines a set of tests that require compliance before the employment of a device in aircraft. An important test involves the generator voltage and consequential current distortion of the three-phase load in the variable 360–800 Hz frequency grid. The main purpose of this paper is to present and analyze a systematic design methodology for three-phase boost and buck rectifiers in order to meet with the voltage distortion test requirement. For a given voltage harmonic profile, the current harmonic limits that have to be satisfied are translated into equivalent per-harmonic admittances and a profile of maximum rectifier input admittance versus frequency is obtained. The defined profile, due to normalization, is applicable to arbitrary power level with simple shifting by the base admittance governed by the converter nominal power. It is shown that for boost-type rectifiers there is a tradeoff between current controller bandwidth and input inductor size, while for the buck-type rectifiers main limitation lies in the input LC filter design used for differential electromagnetic interference filtering. The experimental results conducted on an SiC three-phase 10 kW VIENNA rectifier are tightly backing up the proposed theoretical analysis. With the rapid development of photovoltaic and fuel cell stacks, high voltage gain converters are urgently demanded. Conventional boost is limited by the exaggerated duty cycle, it is impossible to obtain a high voltage gain while ensuring efficiency. Therefore, a zero-voltage switching (ZVS)-modified SEPIC converter that combines a voltage multiplier cell with traditional SEPIC is proposed in this paper. With detailed parameters design process, this presented converter works at zero voltage switching (ZVS), while obtaining high voltage gain without extremely high duty cycle. Besides, voltage stress is also reduced and low-voltage component with lower parasitic parameters can be used, thus efficiency is maintained. In order to further improve the power density, an integrated inductor scheme is adopted in this paper without changing intrinsic working states of the two inductors. Active cell balancing is the process of equalizing the State-of-Charge (SoC) of all cells in a series-connected battery pack via charge transfers. While several balancing architectures and equalization strategies exist in the literature, optimization of the circuit components in a balancing architecture has not been sufficiently studied so far. Intuitively, one would select components with low parasitic resistances to minimize the energy dissipation. However, as will be shown in this paper, this might not be an optimal choice in most situations. In this paper, we propose an optimization framework that performs an efficient design space exploration to identify the energy-efficient circuit configuration of a balancing architecture. Moreover, for the first time, we propose a methodology to obtain the optimal operating frequency of an active cell balancing architecture and a control circuit to maintain the operation at the optimal frequency. For this purpose, we derive a closed-form analytical model of the charge transfer process with which we obtain the performance metrics required for our framework. Case studies show that such optimally dimensioned active cell balancing architectures operated at the optimal frequency reduce the energy dissipation by approximately 49% compared to the intuitive approach of selecting components with least parasitic resistances. In this paper, a laser headlight power converter (LHPC) was developed to drive the InGaN-based blue beam laser diode (BBLD). The LHPC was composed of the four–switch step-up step-down converter (FSSUSDC), the FSSUSDC controller, and the current error compensator (CEC). When the BBLD dynamic resistance was increased under the high ambient air temperature, the FSSUSDC operated in the step-down mode, and the CEC employed the proportional-integral control, the BBLD driving current exhibited an ignition current spike, which could destroy the semiconductor material of the BBLD, resulting in optical output power decay. Therefore, a new four-gradation gain (FGG) control method was proposed to mitigate the ignition current spike of the BBLD. This paper provides an experimental discussion on a real-time real-power emulator that plays an important role in achieving a total test of medium-voltage, high-power, high-speed induction motor drives. The use of the emulator brings cost and time savings to the test. The test bench including the emulator is characterized by connecting two modular multilevel double-star chopper-cell (DSCC) converters connected in a front-to-front way. This paper designs, builds, and tests a 400- ${\rm V}_{\rm dc}$ , 10-kW downscaled test bench. It mainly consists of the following two identical DSCC converters: 1) one DSCC converter is used as an inverter under test; and 2) the other as a real-time real-power high-fidelity emulator. Experimental waveforms confirm that the emulator can reproduce electrical and mechanical operating performance of the three-phase 200-V, 10-kW, four-pole, 9000-r/min induction motor loaded with a centrifugal compressor. A high-frequency high voltage gain discontinuous conduction mode coupled-inductor boost LED driver based on planar component is presented in this paper. GaN switch is adopted with lower conducting resistance and higher switching speed. Zero voltage switching (ZVS) is achieved at the same time to reduce high switching loss caused by high switching frequency. Compared with the previous work, the voltage gain is higher and efficiency is higher because of ZVS. This paper focuses on high efficiency; therefore, resonant gate driver is adopted and efficiency is increased by 0.6%. In terms of the coupled-inductor, planar component is used and parameter optimization is also proposed to realize lower loss, including wingding loss and fringing loss caused by the air gap. A 500 kHz 36 W prototype has been designed to demonstrate theoretical analysis. In addition, comparison of drive loss between the resonant gate driver used in this paper and conventional driver implemented by Si8271 is made, revealing advantages of the resonant driver. The use of electronic equipment and other dc-compatible appliances in homes and offices is increasing at a very fast rate, as well as the distributed generation of energy. These two statements will most likely trigger, in a near future, the adoption of district-scale dc grids, connecting dc microgeneration plants and consumers, in an effort to cut the number of conversion steps required to deliver power to dc appliances. DC–DC converters will be fundamental in these systems, allowing the establishment of several voltage levels. The reliability of these converters plays a critical role, ensuring service continuity of the loads connected to them. With the increment of reliability in mind, this paper proposes a simple yet effective open-circuit fault diagnostic method suitable for interleaved dc–dc boost converters, but equally functional for other dc–dc converter topologies. The improvements introduced in this paper greatly simplify the diagnostic action, while making the correct diagnostic of faults independent of the switching duty cycle. Moreover, an alternative reconfiguration scheme is proposed to mitigate the adverse impacts of such faults. A DC system saturated core fault current limiter (DCSFCL) was proposed to limit the fast rising trend of fault current in HVDC system. However, traditional method to calculate and design the DCSFCL tend to neglect leakage flux around the permanent magnet (PM), leading to large calculation error and inappropriate design procedure. The novel contribution of this paper is that it proposed a modularization method to analyze the permeance of both PM and adjacent air. Hence, the leakage flux effect is considered properly and a more accurate permeance matrix can be derived in a pure mathematical way. In this case, DCSFCL can be calculated much faster than the FEA simulation program with a promising accuracy regarding fault limiting performance. More importantly, design flow of the DCSFCL and related PM biased devices was given as well. Calculation result shows that inductance value calculated by the proposed method has less than 1% error compared with fine meshed FEA simulation result and about 20% increase in accuracy compared with traditional method that neglects PM leakage flux effect. The dc-dc converters with high step-up DC-voltage gain play a vital role in integrating low voltage DC sources. Though several converter topologies are reported in the recent past, attempts have been made to reduce the components, especially the switching devices, passive elements, converter losses, etc., of the converter. A novel DC-DC converter topology, viz., single switched impedance network (SSIN)-based converter with n-stage is proposed in this paper. The operation of the SSIN based converter in continuous and discontinuous conduction modes are discussed. The effect of parasitic elements on DC-voltage gain and efficiency of the SSIN is carried out. The small-signal model of the SSIN converter is derived. The performance of the SSIN converter is compared with the similar converter topologies. The 500 W prototypes of the SSIN with n = 1 and n = 2 are fabricated, and the experimental results are presented in this paper. To improve the converter performance, SiC-based semiconductor devices are used. This paper discusses the design, fabrication, and characterization of packaged planar inductors with magnetic material [nickel zinc (NiZn) ferrite]. Inductors are designed specifically for Internet of Things (IoT) applications based on power loss in an IoT architecture. Different spiral inductor geometries are demonstrated on a printed wiring board with varying thicknesses using a stencil printing process. The magnetic material can be applied to one or both sides of the inductor and, therefore, provides size reduction. This paper examines the role of varying dimensions on inductor performance along with model-to-hardware correlation. The fabrication process demonstrates inductance increase through a very simple procedure for applying a magnetic material on both sides of the inductor, while having flexibility to customize the geometry for minimal power loss in an IoT architecture. With NiZn ferrite material added to both sides of the inductor, the inductance increases between approximately 60% and 80% for the two substrate thicknesses studied, as compared to air-core inductors. This paper offers a new approach for far-field high-resolution imaging of conducting obstacles based on arrays of frequency-multiplexed subwavelength resonant elements. Each resonator is a circular aperture in a metallic screen that is strongly miniaturized by means of loading by a thin epsilon-negative and near-zero metamaterial (MTM) liner. Each MTM-lined aperture exhibits a fano-shape transmission profile, i.e., a peak followed by a minimum, and the resonance frequencies of different apertures are chosen such that the resonance of one lies within/very close to the antiresonance of the other to ensure strong decoupling. This paper shows that blocking an aperture using a conducting disc removes the corresponding resonance peak/minimum from the transmission/far-field amplitude spectrum, enabling far-field detection of any distribution of such obstacles with a spatial resolution determined by the aperture sizes, which measure less than one-sixth of free-space wavelength at their respective resonance frequencies. The proposed imaging mechanism is verified through full-wave HFSS simulations as well as far-field measurements. Some challenges associated with this approach are then discussed. This paper presents a shutdown dose rate (SDR) calculation to estimate a newly developed preliminary concept of the equatorial port model for the Korean fusion demonstration reactor (K-DEMO). The equatorial port model was designed to provide effective radiation shielding abilities adopting the port shielding block and labyrinth structure, which was integrated into the modified K-DEMO neutronic analysis model by the Monte Carlo automatic modeling system. A rigorous two-step method was applied to couple transport (MCNP) and activation (FISPACT) codes according to three steps of calculation procedures. The results of neutron flux and decay gamma transport calculation for the equatorial port area have been indicated in this paper. The SDR calculation result near the equatorial port area reveals that a dose level in the equatorial port interspace was below $100~\mu $ Sv/h after 12 days of the shutdown. Shielding blocks and two labyrinth structures prove that they effectively attenuate neutrons on the current concept of the equatorial port model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The demand on mobile electronics to continue to shrink in size while increasing in efficiency drives the demand on the internal passive components to do the same. Power amplifiers require inductors with small form factors, high quality factors ( Q\texts ), and high operating frequency in the single-digit gigahertz range. This paper explores the use of magnetic materials to satisfy the demands of power amplifier inductor applications. This paper then discusses the optimization choices regarding material selection, device design, and fabrication methodology. The inductors achieved here present the best performance to date for an integrated magnetic core inductor at high frequencies with a 1-nH inductance and peak $Q$ value of four at about 3 GHz.
