Wireless data broadcast allows a large number of users to retrieve data simultaneously in mobile databases, resulting in an efficient way of using the scarce wireless bandwidth. However, the efficiency of data access methods is limited by an inherent property that data can only be accessed strictly sequentially by users. In many applications, top-k query is an important operation to return a set of interesting points in a potentially huge data space. It is analyzed in this paper that the existing algorithms cannot process top- k query on massive data efficiently. This paper proposes a novel table-scan-based T2S algorithm to efficiently compute top-k results on massive data. T2S first constructs the presorted table, whose tuples are arranged in the order of the round-robin retrieval on the sorted lists. T2S maintains only fixed number of tuples to compute results. The early termination checking for T2S is presented in this paper, along with the analysis of scan depth. The selective retrieval is devised to skip the tuples in the presorted table which are not top-k results. The theoretical analysis proves that selective retrieval can reduce the number of the retrieved tuples significantly. The construction and incremental-update/batch-processing methods for the used structures are proposed in this paper. We all are aware of the huge amount of electromagnetic information and knowledge available in the Web, both in the form of PDF scientific papers, and in other forms (e.g., software, datasets). Similarly, we all have experienced the frustration of searching the Web for papers and other information, and getting useless or unsatisfactory results. All these limitations clearly demonstrate that information technologies (IT) need further progress so as to improve the efficiency of the mentioned processes. Indeed, there is fervid activity around this goal, and some interesting achievements have begun to appear in terms of search effectiveness and navigation satisfaction. Novel formats for representing scientific-paper contents are proposed, enhancing machine processing capability. However, embracing the new information technology proposals requires a cultural change from authors and from editors, and we cannot take it for granted that it will happen in the near future. Moreover, already-published papers should not be left out from approaching Web innovations. In this paper, we therefore focus both on the emerging technologies for generating more searchable files, and on those technologies allowing the transformation of existing PDF files into more-effective formats. These technologies need to be customized to each specific domain, thus rendering the codification of specific electromagnetic (EM) concepts of paramount importance. A functional $k$ -batch code of dimension $s$ consists of $n$ servers storing linear combinations of $s$ linearly independent information bits. Any multiset request of size $k$ of linear combinations (or requests) of the information bits can be recovered by $k$ disjoint subsets of the servers. The goal under this paradigm is to find the minimum number of servers for given values of $s$ and $k$. A recent conjecture states that for any $k=2^{s-1}$ requests the optimal solution requires $2^{s}-1$ servers. This conjecture is verified for $s \leqslant 5$ but previous work could only show that codes with $n=2^{s}-1$ servers can support a solution for $k=2^{s-2} + 2^{s-4} + \left \lfloor{ \frac { 2^{s/2}}{\sqrt {24}} }\right \rfloor $ requests. This paper reduces this gap and shows the existence of codes for $k=\lfloor \frac {5}{6}2^{s-1} \rfloor - s$ requests with the same number of servers. Another construction in the paper provides a code with $n=2^{s+1}-2$ servers and $k=2^{s}$ requests, which is an optimal result. There has been much recent interest in private information retrieval (PIR) in models where a database is stored across several servers using coding techniques from distributed storage, rather than being a simply replicated. In particular, a recent breakthrough result of Fazelli, Vardy, and Yaakobi introduces the notion of a PIR code and a PIR array code, and uses this notion to produce efficient PIR protocols. In this paper, we are interested in designing PIR array codes. We consider the case when we have $m$ servers, with each server storing a fraction $(1/s)$ of the bits of the database; here $s$ is a fixed rational number with $s > 1$. A PIR array code with the $k$ -PIR property enables a $k$ -server PIR protocol (with $k\leq m$) to be emulated on $m$ servers, with the overall storage requirements of the protocol being reduced. The communication complexity of a PIR protocol reduces as $k$ grows, so the virtual server rate, defined to be $k/m$ , is an important parameter. We study the maximum virtual server rate of a PIR array code with the $k$ -PIR property. We present upper bounds on the achievable virtual server rate, some constructions, and ideas how to obtain the PIR array codes with the highest possible virtual server rate. In particular, we present constructions that asymptotically meet our upper bounds and the exact largest virtual server rate is obtained when $1 < s \leq 2$. A $k$ -PIR code (and similarly a $k$ -PIR array code) is also a locally repairable code with symbol availability $k-1$. Such a code ensures $k$ parallel reads for each information symbol. So the virtual server rate is very closely related to the symbol availability of the code when used as a locally repairable code. As the rate at which scientific work is published continues to increase, so does the need to discern high-impact publications. In recent years, there have been several approaches that seek to rank publications based on their expected citation-based impact. Despite this level of attention, this research area has not been systematically studied. Past literature often fails to distinguish between short-term impact, the current popularity of an article, and long-term impact, the overall influence of an article. Moreover, the evaluation methodologies applied vary widely and are inconsistent. In this work, we aim to fill these gaps, studying impact-based ranking theoretically and experimentally. First, we provide explicit definitions for short-term and long-term impact, and introduce the associated ranking problems. Then, we identify and classify the most important ideas employed by state-of-the-art methods. After studying various evaluation methodologies of the literature, we propose a specific benchmark framework that can help us better differentiate effectiveness across impact aspects. Using this framework we investigate: (1) the practical difference between ranking by short- and long-term impact, and (2) the effectiveness and efficiency of ranking methods in different settings. This paper describes ExploraTool, a new interactive tool to visually explore data from multiple repositories. The tool has been applied in a real setting to explore computational fluid dinamics (CFD) simulation data and obtain new insights into the space of simulations. The inclusion of free exploration, filtering operations, and chart generation provides a quick method for performance comparisons. The paper proposes an algorithmic means of processing input in the form of tabular data sets, generating a plausible hierarchical structure over metadata categories, which is used to initialize the visualization together with interactions’ methods to explore, select, and compare sets of simulation data. This paper also reports on the evaluation study performed involving 24 engineers over two distinct locations from a large automotive manufacturer to evaluate the usability and the overall user satisfaction with the tool. In this paper, we study two families of codes with availability, namely, private information retrieval (PIR) codes and batch codes. While the former requires that every information symbol has $k$ mutually disjoint recovering sets, the latter imposes this property for each multiset request of $k$ information symbols. The main problem under this paradigm is to minimize the number of redundancy symbols. We denote this value by $r_{P}(n,k)$ and $r_{B}(n,k)$ , for PIR codes and batch codes, respectively, where $n$ is the number of information symbols. Previous results showed that for any constant $k$ , $r_{P}(n,k) = \Theta (\sqrt {n})$ and $r_{B}(n,k)= {\mathcal{ O}}(\sqrt {n}\log (n))$. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of these codes for non-constant $k$ and specifically for $k=\Theta (n^\epsilon)$. We also study the largest value of $k$ such that the rate of the codes approaches 1 and show that for all $\epsilon < 1$ , $r_{P}(n,n^\epsilon) = o(n)$ and $r_{B}(n,n^\epsilon) = o(n)$. Short text clustering has far-reaching effects on semantic analysis, showing its importance for multiple applications such as corpus summarization and information retrieval. However, it inevitably encounters the severe sparsity of short text representations, making the previous clustering approaches still far from satisfactory. In this paper, we present a novel attentive representation learning model for shot text clustering, wherein cluster-level attention is proposed to capture the correlations between text representations and cluster representations. Relying on this, the representation learning and clustering for short texts are seamlessly integrated into a unified model. To further ensure robust model training for short texts, we apply adversarial training to the unsupervised clustering setting, by injecting perturbations into the cluster representations. The model parameters and perturbations are optimized alternately through a minimax game. Extensive experiments on four real-world short text datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model over several strong competitors, verifying that robust adversarial training yields substantial performance gains. In the classical model for (information theoretically secure) Private Information Retrieval (PIR) due to Chor, Goldreich, Kushilevitz and Sudan, a user wishes to retrieve one bit of a database that is stored on a set of ${n}$ servers, in such a way that no individual server gains information about which bit the user is interested in. The aim is to design schemes that minimise the total communication between the user and the servers. More recently, there have been moves to consider more realistic models where the total storage of the set of servers, or the per server storage, should be minimised (possibly using techniques from distributed storage), and where the database is divided into ${R}$ -bit records with ${R}>1$ , and the user wishes to retrieve one record rather than one bit. When ${R}$ is large, downloads from the servers to the user dominate the communication complexity and so the aim is to minimise the total number of downloaded bits. Work of Shah, Rashmi and Ramchandran shows that at least ${R}+1$ bits must be downloaded from servers in the worst case, and provides PIR schemes meeting this bound. Sun and Jafar have considered the download cost of a scheme, defined as the ratio of the message length ${R}$ and the total number of bits downloaded. They determine the best asymptotic download cost of a PIR scheme (as ${R}\rightarrow \infty $) when a database of ${k}$ messages is stored by ${n}$ servers. This paper provides various bounds on the download complexity of a PIR scheme, generalising those of Shah et al. to the case when the number ${n}$ of servers is bounded, and providing links with classical techniques due to Chor et al. The paper also provides a range of constructions for PIR schemes that are either simpler or perform better than previously known schemes. These constructions include explicit schemes that achieve the best asymptotic download complexity of Sun and Jafar with significantly lower upload complexity, and general techniques for constructing a scheme with good worst case download complexity from a scheme with good download complexity on average. Link similarity is widely applied in measuring the similarity between such objects as Web pages, scientific papers, and social networks. However, there are some deficiencies in the existing methods to measure it. For example, they cannot handle some semantic-similar contents. Their computation may not lead to accurate results in some cases. This paper presents a novel method to do so. It introduces the semantic similarity to calculate the similarity between two given objects, and overcomes the drawback caused by the fact that the existing methods ignore the semantic information of objects. Consider a continuous signal that cannot be observed directly. Instead, one has access to multiple corrupted versions of the signal. The available corrupted signals are correlated because they carry information about the common remote signal. The goal is to reconstruct the original signal from the data collected from its corrupted versions. Known as the indirect or remote reconstruction problem, it has been mainly studied in the literature from an information theoretic perspective. A variant of this problem for a class of Gaussian signals, known as the “Gaussian CEO problem,” has received particular attention; for example, it has been shown that the problem of recovering the remote signal is equivalent with the problem of recovering the set of corrupted signals (separation principle). The information theoretic formulation of the remote reconstruction problem assumes that the corrupted signals are uniformly sampled and the focus is on optimal compression of the samples. On the other hand, in this paper, we revisit this problem from a sampling perspective. More specifically, assuming restrictions on the sampling rate from each corrupted signal, we look at the problem of finding the best sampling locations for each signal to minimize the total reconstruction distortion of the remote signal. In finding the sampling locations, one can take advantage of the correlation among the corrupted signals. The statistical model of the original signal and its corrupted versions adopted in this paper are similar to the one considered for the Gaussian CEO problem; i.e., we restrict to a class of Gaussian signals. Our main contribution is a fundamental lower bound on the reconstruction distortion for any arbitrary nonuniform sampling strategy. This lower bound is valid for any sampling rate. Furthermore, it is tight and matches the optimal reconstruction distortion in low and high sampling rates. Moreover, it is shown that in the low sampling rate region, it is optimal to use a certain nonuniform sampling scheme on all the signals. On the other hand, in the high sampling rate region, it is optimal to uniformly sample all the signals. We also consider the problem of finding the optimal sampling locations to recover the set of corrupted signals, rather than the remote signal. Unlike the information theoretic formulation of the problem in which these two problems were equivalent, we show that they are not equivalent in our setting. In this paper, a semantic communication framework is proposed for textual data transmission. In the studied model, a base station (BS) extracts the semantic information from textual data, and transmits it to each user. The semantic information is modeled by a knowledge graph (KG) that consists of a set of semantic triples. After receiving the semantic information, each user recovers the original text using a graph-to-text generation model. To measure the performance of the considered semantic communication framework, a metric of semantic similarity (MSS) that jointly captures the semantic accuracy and completeness of the recovered text is proposed. Due to wireless resource limitations, the BS may not be able to transmit the entire semantic information to each user and satisfy the transmission delay constraint. Hence, the BS must select an appropriate resource block for each user as well as determine and transmit part of the semantic information to the users. As such, we formulate an optimization problem whose goal is to maximize the total MSS by jointly optimizing the resource allocation policy and determining the partial semantic information to be transmitted. To solve this problem, a proximal-policy-optimization-based reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm integrated with an attention network is proposed. The proposed algorithm can evaluate the importance of each triple in the semantic information using an attention network and then, build a relationship between the importance distribution of the triples in the semantic information and the total MSS. Compared to traditional RL algorithms, the proposed algorithm can dynamically adjust its learning rate thus ensuring convergence to a locally optimal solution. Simulation results show that the proposed framework can reduce by 41.3% data that the BS needs to transmit and improve by two-fold the total MSS compared to a standard communication network without using semantic communication techniques. The empirical nature of Information Retrieval (IR) mandates strong experimental practices. A keystone of such experimental practices is the Cranfield evaluation paradigm. Within this paradigm, the collection of relevance judgments has been the subject of intense scientific investigation. This is because, on one hand, consistent, precise, and numerous judgements are keys to reducing evaluation uncertainty and test collection bias; on the other hand, however, relevance judgements are costly to collect. The selection of which documents to judge for relevance, known as pooling method, has therefore a great impact on IR evaluation. In this paper we focus on the bias introduced by the pooling method, known as pool bias, which affects the reusability of test collections, in particular when building test collections with a limited budget. In this paper we formalize and evaluate a set of 22 pooling strategies based on: traditional strategies, voting systems, retrieval fusion methods, evaluation measures, and multi-armed bandit models. To do this we run a large-scale evaluation by considering a set of 9 standard TREC test collections, in which we show that the choice of the pooling strategy has significant effects on the cost needed to obtain an unbiased test collection. Forward modeling of wave scattering and radar imaging mechanisms is the key to information extraction from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Like inverse graphics in the optical domain, an inherently-integrated forward-inverse approach would be promising for SAR advanced information retrieval and target reconstruction. This paper presents such an attempt at inverse graphics for SAR imagery. A differentiable SAR renderer (DSR) is developed, which reformulates the mapping and projection algorithm of the SAR imaging mechanism in the differentiable form of probability maps. First-order gradients of the proposed DSR are then analytically derived, which can be back-propagated from rendered image/silhouette to the target geometry and scattering attributes. A 3D inverse target reconstruction algorithm from SAR images is devised. Several simulation and reconstruction experiments are conducted, including targets with and without background, using synthesized data or real measured inverse SAR (ISAR) data by ground radar. Erasure codes have been widely considered as a promising solution to enhance data reliability at low storage costs. However, in modern geo-distributed storage systems, erasure codes may incur high data access latency as they require data retrieval from multiple remote storage nodes. This hinders the extensive application of erasure codes to data-intensive applications. This paper proposes novel caching schemes to achieve low latency in distributed coded storage systems. Assuming that future data popularity and network latency information are available, an offline caching scheme is proposed to explore the optimal caching solution for low latency. The proposed scheme categorizes all feasible caching decisions into a set of cache partitions, and then obtains the optimal caching decision through market clearing price for each cache partition. Furthermore, guided by the optimal scheme, an online caching scheme is proposed according to the measured data popularity and network latency information in real time, without the need to completely override the existing caching decisions. Both theoretical analysis and experiment results demonstrate that the online scheme can approximate the offline optimal scheme well with dramatically reduced computation complexity. This paper concerns the problem of recovering an unknown but structured signal ${x}\in \mathbb {R} ^{n}$ from $m$ -quadratic measurements of the form ${y}_{r}= \left |{\langle {a}_{r}, {x}\rangle }\right |^{{2}}$ for ${r}={1},{2},\ldots, {m}$. We focus on the under-determined setting where the number of measurements is significantly smaller than the dimension of the signal (${m} < < {n}$). We formulate the recovery problem as a nonconvex optimization problem where prior structural information about the signal is enforced through constrains on the optimization variables. We prove the projected gradient descent, when initialized in a neighborhood of the desired signal, converges to the unknown signal at a linear rate. These results hold for any closed constraint set (convex or non-convex) providing convergence guarantees to the global optimum even when the objective function and constraint set are nonconvex. Furthermore, these results hold with a number of measurements that are only a constant factor away from the minimal number of measurements required to uniquely identify the unknown signal. Our results provide the first provably tractable algorithm for this data-poor regime, breaking local sample complexity barriers that have emerged in this paper. In this paper, we utilize and further develop powerful tools for uniform convergence of empirical processes that may have broader implications for rigorous understanding of constrained nonconvex optimization heuristics. Sweep scan is an emerging five-axis inspection technology of retrieving geometric data from free-form surfaces. Compared with the traditional surface inspection by coordinate measuring machine (CMM) that works in a point-by-point manner, sweep scan is able to make the stylus tip continuously sweep at high speed on the surface to inspect, whilst acquiring the 3-D point data accurately and efficiently. However, at present, for an arbitrary free-form surface, it still heavily depends on humans to manually generate a suitable sweep scan path. This paper presents a practical sweep scan path planning method, which can automatically generate an efficient sweep scan path for an arbitrary free-form surface. The resultant sweep scan path is able to cater to the shape of the surface to inspect and the unique kinematic characteristics of the typical five-axis inspection machine, so as to achieve a tremendous increase in inspection efficiency. The experiments performed by us show that when compared with some existing automatic sweep scan path generation algorithms such as the simple zigzag method, the proposed method is able to reduce the total inspection time by as much as seven times. Note to Practitioners—This paper is motivated by the lack of effective automatic sweep scan path planning methods for arbitrary free-form surfaces. Although there is a rich body of five-axis CMM path planning methods for inspection of free-form surfaces, they are mainly designed for the traditional inspection mode, i.e., the point-by-point measurement. Compared with the traditional discrete way of CMM inspection, sweep scan has a quite different inspection mode, which tremendously boosts the inspection efficiency by maintaining the constant contact between the stylus and the surface to inspect. The traditional five-axis inspection path planning methods are no longer applicable to sweep scan. Up to date, only a very handful few of automatic sweep scan path planning methods are reported and they seem to be very difficult to implement and no optimality of inspection efficiency is discussed. We present a practical algorithm for automatic generation of sweep scan paths for inspection of an arbitrary free-form surface. The algorithm is novel in that, by considering both the surface shape and the unique kinematic characteristics of a typical five-axis inspection machine, it tries to globally minimize the total inspection time. In our experiments, the sweep scan paths, generated by the proposed method, are found to outperform that of some traditional simple sweep scan path generation methods such as the zigzag method by a large margin in terms of total inspection time (while the data acquisition accuracy is maintained at the same level). As a newly emerging network model, heterogeneous information networks (HINs) have received growing attention. Many data mining tasks have been explored in HINs, including clustering, classification, and similarity search. Similarity join is a fundamental operation required for many problems. It is attracting attention from various applications on network data, such as friend recommendation, link prediction, and online advertising. Although similarity join has been well studied in homogeneous networks, it has not yet been studied in heterogeneous networks. Especially, none of the existing research on similarity join takes different semantic meanings behind paths into consideration and almost all completely ignore the heterogeneity and diversity of the HINs. In this paper, we propose a path-based similarity join (PS-join) method to return the top $k$ similar pairs of objects based on any user specified join path in a heterogeneous information network. We study how to prune expensive similarity computation by introducing bucket pruning based locality sensitive hashing (BPLSH) indexing. Compared with existing Link-based Similarity join (LS-join) method, PS-join can derive various similarity semantics. This paper presents a novel approach for spectral unmixing of remotely sensed hyperspectral data. It exploits probabilistic latent topics in order to take advantage of the semantics pervading the latent topic space when identifying spectral signatures and estimating fractional abundances from hyperspectral images. Despite the contrasted potential of topic models to uncover image semantics, they have been merely used in hyperspectral unmixing as a straightforward data decomposition process. This limits their actual capabilities to provide semantic representations of the spectral data. The proposed model, called dual-depth sparse probabilistic latent semantic analysis (DEpLSA), makes use of two different levels of topics to exploit the semantic patterns extracted from the initial spectral space in order to relieve the ill-posed nature of the unmixing problem. In other words, DEpLSA defines a first level of deep topics to capture the semantic representations of the spectra, and a second level of restricted topics to estimate endmembers and abundances over this semantic space. An experimental comparison in conducted using the two standard topic models and the seven state-of-the-art unmixing methods available in the literature. Our experiments, conducted using four different hyperspectral images, reveal that the proposed approach is able to provide competitive advantages over available unmixing approaches. It is common place for embedded systems and consumer products to contain flash memory for nonvolatile storage. While there are many applications that require the data stored in the flash memory to be in a given structure enabling the data to be externally accessed, there are also many embedded consumer applications where the content of the flash memory is only accessed locally. In this case, the local application can benefit from having a minimized bespoke file system optimized for the application, resulting in lower power and faster access speed than using public file systems. This paper analyzes the overhead in using the commonly used file allocation table file system, and proposes a significantly faster, smaller footprint, and hence lower power file system, termed SlimFS. In this paper, we present a new framework for the fusion, representation, and analysis of multitemporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. It leads to the definition of a new class of products representing an intermediate level between the classic Level-1 and Level-2 products. The proposed Level-1 $\beta$ products are particularly oriented toward nonexpert users. In fact, their principal characteristics are the interpretability and the suitability to be processed with standard algorithms. The main innovation of this paper is the design of a suitable RGB representation of data aiming to enhance the information content of the time-series. The physical rationale of the products is presented through examples, in which we show their robustness with respect to sensor, acquisition mode, and geographic area. A discussion about the suitability of the proposed products with Sentinel-1 imagery is also provided, showing the full compatibility with data acquired by the new European Space Agency sensor. One of the most common ways in which results are displayed by an information retrieval system is in the form of a list, in which the most relevant results appear in the first positions. Today's large screens, however, allow one to create more complex displays of results, especially in cases such as image retrieval, in which each unit returned is fairly compact. For these layouts the simple list model is no longer valid, since the relations between the slots in which the results are placed do not form a sequence, that is, the relation among them is no longer that of a total order. In this paper we model these layouts as partial orders and show that a “stalwart display” property (a layout in which items’ relevance is unambiguously conveyed by their display position) can be obtained only in the case of lists. For the other layouts, we define two classes of representation functions: “safe” functions (which display results without adding spurious structure) and “rich” functions (which do not drop any structure from the result set), as well as an algorithm to optimally display fully ordered result sets in arbitrary display layouts. Information retrieval in associative memories was studied in a recent paper by Yaakobi and Bruck (2012). Associations between memory entries give us the t -neighbourhood of an entry. In their model, an information unit is retrieved from the memory with the aid of input clues, which are chosen from a reference set. In this paper, we consider the situation where the information unit is found unambiguously using the associated t -neighbourhoods of the input clues. A varying number of input clues are allowed, but a limit mu on the maximum number of them is imposed. Of course, we would like mu to be as small as possible. We consider the problem over the binary Hamming space \mathbb F^n and focus on the minimum of mu , denoted by $\nu (n;t)$ . Using linear reference sets, we show that $\nu (n;2) \leq 5$ for any $n \geq 9$ . We also give infinite families of reference sets, which provide good bounds on $\nu (n;t)$ for $t=3$ . In addition, efficient methods are given to obtain bounds on $\nu (n;t)$ for any $t$ from known reference sets. This paper presents and analyzes a novel concatenated coding scheme for enabling error resilience in two distributed storage settings: one being storage using existing regenerating codes and the second being storage using locally repairable codes. The concatenated coding scheme brings together a maximum rank distance code as an outer code and either a globally regenerating or a locally repairable code as an inner code. In addition, error resilience for combination of locally repairable codes with regenerating codes is considered. This concatenated coding system is designed to handle two different types of adversarial errors: the first type includes an adversary that can replace the content of an affected node only once; while the second type studies an adversary that is capable of polluting data an unbounded number of times. The paper establishes an upper bound on the resilience capacity for a locally repairable code. This paper also proves that the proposed concatenated coding approach attains the upper bound on the resilience capacity in the presence of the first type of adversary for both minimum storage regenerating codes and locally repairable codes. Further, this paper presents mechanisms that combine the presented concatenated coding scheme with subspace signatures to achieve error resilience for the second type of errors. A private proximity retrieval (PPR) scheme is a protocol which allows a user to retrieve the identities of all records in a database that are within some distance $r$ from the user’s record $x$. The user’s privacy at each server is given by the fraction of the record $x$ that is kept private. In this paper, this research is initiated and protocols that offer trade-offs between privacy, computational complexity, and storage are studied. In particular, we assume that each server stores a copy of the database and study the required minimum number of servers by our protocol which provides a given privacy level. Each server receives a query in the protocol and the set of queries forms a code. The main focus in the paper is dedicated to studying the family of codes generated by the set of queries. These codes will be shown to satisfy a specific covering property and will be called private proximity retrieval intersection covering codes. In particular, since the query every server receives is a codeword, the goal is to minimize the number of codewords in such a code which is the minimum number of servers required by the protocol. These codes are closely related to a family of codes known as covering designs. We introduce several lower bounds on the sizes of such codes as well as several constructions. This paper focuses on the provision of public transport information in Dublin, Ireland. It examines both existing and potential methods of accessing information, with particular focus on the implementation of various intelligent transport systems applications. One of the main objectives of this paper is examining the stages a passenger goes through when deciding to undertake a public transport trip and in what form they require information at each stage. This paper defines these stages as "pre-trip to destination," "at-stop," "onboard," and "pre-trip to origin" (this is the return journey). Each of these four stages is examined in this paper. A web-based survey was used to collect data on passenger preferences and describes the methods of information delivery each passenger requires at each stage. This paper primarily deals with the respondents' stated preference for public transport information and does not examine revealed preferences. The survey also details results of passengers' opinions of the different information provision formats such as call centers, mobile phones, the Internet, and paper-based methods. Ranking on graphs is a centerpiece in many high-impact application domains, such as information retrieval, recommender systems, team management, neuroscience and many more. PageRank, along with many of its variants, is widely used across these application domains thanks to its mathematical elegance and the superior performance. Although PageRank and its variants are effective in ranking nodes on graphs, they often lack an efficient and effective way to audit the ranking results in terms of the input graph structure, e.g., which node or edge in the graph contributes most to the top-1 ranked node; which subgraph plays a crucial role in generating the overall ranking result? In this paper, we propose to audit graph ranking by finding the influential graph elements (e.g., edges, nodes, attributes, and subgraphs) regarding their impact on the ranking results. First, we formulate graph ranking auditing problem as quantifying the influence of graph elements on the ranking results. Second, we show that our formulation can be applied to a variety of graph structures. Third, we propose effective and efficient algorithms to find the top- $k$ k influential edges/nodes/subgraph. Finally, we perform extensive empirical evaluations on real-world datasets to demonstrate that the proposed methods (Aurora) provide intuitive auditing results with linear scalability. Lane-based road network information, such as the number and locations of traffic lanes on a road, has played an important role in intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, we propose a Collecting Lane-based Road Information via Crowdsourcing (CLRIC) method, which can automatically extract detailed lane structure of roads by using crowdsourcing data collected by vehicles. First, CLRIC filters the high-precision GPS data from the raw trajectories based on region growing clustering with prior knowledge. Second, CLRIC mines the number and locations of traffic lanes through optimized constrained Gaussian mixture model. Experiments are conducted with taxi GPS trajectories in Wuhan, China, and the results show that CLRIC is quantified and displays detailed road networks with the number and locations of traffic lanes comparing with the satellite image and human-interpreted situation. Video question generation is a challenging task in visual information retrieval, which generates questions given a sequence of video frames. The existing methods mainly tackle the problem of single-turn video question generation, but single-turn conversation usually can’t meet the needs of video information acquisition. In this paper, we propose a new framework for single-turn VQG, which introduces attention mechanism to process inference of dialog history. And we introduce selection mechanism to choose from the candidate questions generated by each round of dialog history. In the framework, we leverage a recent video question answering model to predict the answer to the generated question and adopt the answer quality as rewards to fine-tune our model based on a reinforced learning mechanism. We also introduce a new task of multi-turn video question generation (M-VQG), which is generating multiple questions based on dialog history and video information to build conversation step by step. Our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance of the single-turn VQG task on two large-scale datasets, YouTube-Clips and TACoS-MultiLevel, and provides a baseline approach for M-VQG task. The importance of knowledge organization and information retrieval techniques has been evident throughout human history, becoming even more crucial in the digital age. While computer systems and the web have facilitated information retrieval, challenges arose with the increasing volume of data. The introduction of Semantic Web technologies aimed to enhance precision and accuracy by converting the web into a structured data format. The Cultural Heritage (CH) community has been at the forefront of adopting Semantic Web practices to promote interoperability and shared understanding. In this study, we present a comprehensive conceptual framework that spans cultural heritage, information modeling, and information retrieval. Our model addresses early solutions in knowledge organization systems, highlighting the evolution from classification systems and controlled vocabularies to the significance of metadata schemas. We delve into the limitations of traditional knowledge organization systems and the necessity of formal ontologies, particularly in the cultural heritage domain. The comparative analysis of CRM vs. EDM, ontology-based metadata interoperability, and ontology technologies elucidate our contributions to the field. This paper outlines the process from the initial steps of adopting Semantic Web technologies in the CH domain to the latest developments in CH information retrieval. In this paper, we also reviewed intelligent applications and services developed in the CH domain after establishing semantic data models and Knowledge Organization Systems. Finally, challenges and possible future research directions are discussed. The findings revealed that GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) are excellent and comprehensive sources of CH information. The CH community has put in a lot of time and effort to develop data models and knowledge organization tools; now it’s time to use this valuable resource to construct smart applications that are still in their early phases. This could benefit the CH industry even more.
