Utilizing deep learning for semantic segmentation of cropland from remote sensing imagery has become a crucial technique in land surveys. Cropland is highly heterogeneous and fragmented, and existing methods often suffer from inaccurate boundary segmentation. This paper introduces a UNet-like boundary-aware compensation model (BAFormer). Cropland boundaries typically exhibit rapid transformations in pixel values and texture features, often appearing as high-frequency features in remote sensing images. To enhance the recognition of these high-frequency features as represented by cropland boundaries, the proposed BAFormer integrates a Feature Adaptive Mixer (FAM) and develops a Depthwise Large Kernel Multi-Layer Perceptron model (DWLK-MLP) to enrich the global and local cropland boundaries features separately. Specifically, FAM enhances the boundary-aware method by adaptively acquiring high-frequency features through convolution and self-attention advantages, while DWLK-MLP further supplements boundary position information using a large receptive field. The efficacy of BAFormer has been evaluated on datasets including Vaihingen, Potsdam, LoveDA, and Mapcup. It demonstrates high performance, achieving mIoU scores of 84.5%, 87.3%, 53.5%, and 83.1% on these datasets, respectively. Recently, data-driven approaches have become the dominant solution for prediction problems in agricultural industries. Several deep learning models have been applied to crop yield prediction in smart farming. In this paper, we proposed an efficient hybrid deep learning model that coordinates the outcomes of a classification model and a regression model in deep learning via the shared layers to predict the rice crop yield. Three statistical analyses on the features, including Pearson correlation coefficients (PCC), Shapley additive explanations (SHAP), and recursive feature elimination with cross-validation (RFECV), are proposed to select the most relevant ones for the predictive goal to reduce the model training time. The data preprocessing normalizes the features of the collected data into specific ranges of values and then reformats them into a three-dimensional matrix. As a result, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the proposed model in rice yield prediction has achieved 344.56 and an R-squared of 0.64. The overall performance of the proposed model is better than the other deep learning models, such as the multi-parametric deep neural networks (MDNNs) (i.e., RMSE = 370.80, R-squared = 0.59) and the artificial neural networks (ANNs) (i.e., RMSE = 550.03, R-squared = 0.09). Several deep learning and transformer models have been recommended in previous research to deal with the classification of hyperspectral images (HSIs). Among them, one of the most innovative is the bidirectional encoder representation from transformers (BERT), which applies a distance-independent approach to capture the global dependency among all pixels in a selected region. However, this model does not consider the local spatial-spectral and spectral sequential relations. In this paper, a dual-dimensional (i.e., spatial and spectral) BERT (the so-called D2BERT) is proposed, which improves the existing BERT model by capturing more global and local dependencies between sequential spectral bands regardless of distance. In the proposed model, two BERT branches work in parallel to investigate relations among pixels and spectral bands, respectively. In addition, the layer intermediate information is used for supervision during the training phase to enhance the performance. We used two widely employed datasets for our experimental analysis. The proposed D2BERT shows superior classification accuracy and computational efficiency with respect to some state-of-the-art neural networks and the previously developed BERT model for this task. Road extraction is a hot task in the field of remote sensing, and it has been widely concerned and applied by researchers, especially using deep learning methods. However, many models using convolutional neural networks ignore the attributes of roads, and the shape of the road is banded and discrete. In addition, the continuity and accuracy of road extraction are also affected by narrow roads and roads blocked by trees. This paper designs a network (MSPFE-Net) based on multi-level strip pooling and feature enhancement. The overall architecture of MSPFE-Net is encoder-decoder, and this network has two main modules. One is a multi-level strip pooling module, which aggregates long-range dependencies of different levels to ensure the connectivity of the road. The other module is the feature enhancement module, which is used to enhance the clarity and local details of the road. We perform a series of experiments on the dataset, Massachusetts Roads Dataset, a public dataset. The experimental data showed that the model in this paper was better than the comparison models. Automatic extraction of building contours from high-resolution images is of great significance in the fields of urban planning, demographics, and disaster assessment. Network models based on convolutional neural network (CNN) and transformer technology have been widely used for semantic segmentation of buildings from high resolution remote sensing images (HRSI). However, the fixed geometric structure and the local receptive field of the convolutional kernel are not good at global feature extraction, and the transformer technique with self-attention mechanism introduces computational redundancies and extracts local feature details poorly in the process of modeling the global contextual information. In this paper, a dual-branch fused reconstructive transformer network, DFRTNet, is proposed for efficient and accurate building extraction. In the encoder, the traditional transformer is reconfigured by designing the local and global feature extraction module (LGFE); the branch of global feature extraction (GFE) performs dynamic range attention (DRA) based on the idea of top-k attention for extracting global features; furthermore, the branch of local feature extraction (LFE) is used to obtain fine-grained features. The multilayer perceptron (MLP) is employed to efficiently fuse the local and global features. In the decoder, a simple channel attention module (CAM) is used in the up-sampling part to enhance channel dimension features. With the continuous progress of remote sensing image object detection tasks in recent years, researchers in this field have gradually shifted the focus of their research from horizontal object detection to the study of object detection in arbitrary directions. It is worth noting that some properties are different from horizontal object detection during oriented object detection that researchers have yet to notice much. This article presents the design of a straightforward and efficient arbitrary-oriented detection system, leveraging the inherent properties of the orientation task, including the rotation angle and box aspect ratio. In the detection of low aspect ratio objects, the angle is of little importance to the orientation bounding box, and it is even difficult to define the angle information in extreme categories. Conversely, in the detection of objects with high aspect ratios, the angle information plays a crucial role and can have a decisive impact on the quality of the detection results. By exploiting the aspect ratio of different targets, this letter proposes a ratio-balanced angle loss that allows the model to make a better trade-off between low-aspect ratio objects and high-aspect ratio objects. The rotation angle of each oriented object, which we naturally embed into a two-dimensional Euclidean space for regression, thus avoids an overly redundant design and preserving the topological properties of the circular space. The precise classification of crop types using hyperspectral remote sensing imaging is an essential application in the field of agriculture, and is of significance for crop yield estimation and growth monitoring. Among the deep learning methods, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are the premier model for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification for their outstanding locally contextual modeling capability, which facilitates spatial and spectral feature extraction. Nevertheless, the existing CNNs have a fixed shape and are limited to observing restricted receptive fields, constituting a simulation difficulty for modeling long-range dependencies. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposed two novel classification frameworks which are both built from multilayer perceptrons (MLPs). Firstly, we put forward a dilation-based MLP (DMLP) model, in which the dilated convolutional layer replaced the ordinary convolution of MLP, enlarging the receptive field without losing resolution and keeping the relative spatial position of pixels unchanged. Secondly, the paper proposes multi-branch residual blocks and DMLP concerning performance feature fusion after principal component analysis (PCA), called DMLPFFN, which makes full use of the multi-level feature information of the HSI. The proposed approaches are carried out on two widely used hyperspectral datasets: Salinas and KSC; and two practical crop hyperspectral datasets: WHU-Hi-LongKou and WHU-Hi-HanChuan. Experimental results show that the proposed methods outshine several state-of-the-art methods, outperforming CNN by 6.81%, 12.45%, 4.38% and 8.84%, and outperforming ResNet by 4.48%, 7.74%, 3.53% and 6.39% on the Salinas, KSC, WHU-Hi-LongKou and WHU-Hi-HanChuan datasets, respectively. Advances in deep learning techniques for remote sensing as well as the increased availability of high-resolution data enable the extraction of more detailed information from aerial images. One promising task is the semantic segmentation of roof segments and their orientation. However, the lack of annotated data is a major barrier for deploying respective models on a large scale. Previous research demonstrated the viability of the deep learning approach for the task, but currently, published datasets are small-scale, manually labeled, and rare. Therefore, this paper extends the state of the art by presenting a novel method for the automated generation of large-scale datasets based on semantic 3D city models. Furthermore, we train a model on a dataset 50 times larger than existing datasets and achieve superior performance while applying it to a wider variety of buildings. We evaluate the approach by comparing networks trained on four dataset configurations, including an existing dataset and our novel large-scale dataset. The results show that the network performance measured as intersection over union can be increased from 0.60 for the existing dataset to 0.70 when the large-scale model is applied on the same region. The large-scale model performs superiorly even when applied to more diverse test samples, achieving 0.635. The novel approach contributes to solving the dataset bottleneck and consequently to improving semantic segmentation of roof segments. Identifying low-head dams (LHDs) and creating an inventory is a priority, as fatalities continue to occur at these structures. Because obstruction inventories do not specifically identify LHDs and they are not assigned a hazard classification, there is no official inventory of LHDs; a multi-agency taskforce is creating one now by identifying LHDs using Google Earth Pro (GE Pro). The purpose of this paper is to assess whether a machine learning approach can accelerate the creation of the national inventory. We implemented a machine learning approach to use a high-resolution remote sensing data with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture. The model achieved 76% accuracy in identifying LHDs (true positives) and 95% accuracy identifying Non-low-head-dams (true negatives) on the validation set. We deployed the trained model for the National Hydrologic Geospatial Fabric (Hydrofabric) flowlines in the Provo River watershed. The results showed a high number of false positives and low accuracy due to the mismatch between Hydrofabric flowlines and actual waterways. One of the challenges in the field of remote sensing is how to automatically identify and classify high-resolution remote sensing images. A number of approaches have been proposed. Among them, the methods based on low-level visual features and middle-level visual features have limitations. Therefore, this paper adopts the method of deep learning to classify scenes of high-resolution remote sensing images to learn semantic information. Most of the existing methods of convolutional neural networks are based on the existing model using transfer learning, while there are relatively few articles about designing of new convolutional neural networks based on the existing high-resolution remote sensing image datasets. In this context, this paper proposes a multi-view scaling strategy, a new convolutional neural network based on residual blocks and fusing strategy of pooling layer maps, and uses optimization methods to make the convolutional neural network named RFPNet more robust. Experiments on two benchmark remote sensing image datasets have been conducted. On the UC Merced dataset, the test accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score all exceed 93%. On the SIRI-WHU dataset, the test accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score all exceed 91%. Compared with the existing methods, such as the most traditional methods and some deep learning methods for scene classification of high-resolution remote sensing images, the proposed method has higher accuracy and robustness. Global solar photovoltaic capacity has consistently doubled every 18 months over the last two decades, going from 0.3 GW in 2000 to 643 GW in 2019, and is forecast to reach 4240 GW by 2040. However, these numbers are uncertain, and virtually all reporting on deployments lacks a unified source of either information or validation. In this paper, we propose, optimize, and validate a deep learning framework to detect and map solar farms using a state-of-the-art semantic segmentation convolutional neural network applied to satellite imagery. As a final step in the pipeline, we propose a model to estimate the energy generation capacity of the detected solar energy facilities. Objectively, the deep learning model achieved highly competitive performance indicators, including a mean accuracy of 96.87%, and a Jaccard Index (intersection over union of classified pixels) score of 95.5%. Subjectively, it was found to detect spaces between panels producing a segmentation output at a sub-farm level that was better than human labeling. Finally, the detected areas and predicted generation capacities were validated against publicly available data to within an average error of 4.5% Deep learning applied specifically for the detection and mapping of solar farms is an active area of research, and this deep learning capacity evaluation pipeline is one of the first of its kind. Change detection (CD) is a crucial task in remote sensing (RS) to distinguish surface changes from bitemporal images. Recently, deep learning (DL) based methods have achieved remarkable success for CD. However, the existing methods lack robustness to various kinds of changes in RS images, which suffered from problems of feature misalignment and inefficient supervision. In this paper, a deeply supervised attentive high-resolution network (DSAHRNet) is proposed for remote sensing image change detection. First, we design a spatial-channel attention module to decode change information from bitemporal features. The attention module is able to model spatial-wise and channel-wise contexts. Second, to reduce feature misalignment, the extracted features are refined by stacked convolutional blocks in parallel. Finally, a novel deeply supervised module is introduced to generate more discriminative features. Extensive experimental results on three challenging benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed DSAHRNet outperforms other state-of-the-art methods, and achieves a great trade-off between performance and complexity. This paper aims to evaluate whether an automatic analysis with deep learning convolutional neural networks techniques offer the ability to efficiently identify olive groves with different intensification patterns by using very high-resolution aerial orthophotographs. First, a sub-image crop classification was carried out. To standardize the size and increase the number of samples of the data training (DT), the crop images were divided into mini-crops (sub-images) using segmentation techniques, which used a different threshold and stride size to consider the mini-crop as suitable for the analysis. The four scenarios evaluated discriminated the sub-images efficiently (accuracies higher than 0.8), obtaining the largest sub-images (H = 120, W = 120) for the highest average accuracy (0.957). The super-intensive olive plantings were the easiest to classify for most of the sub-image sizes. Nevertheless, although traditional olive groves were discriminated accurately, too, the most difficult task was to distinguish between the intensive plantings and the traditional ones. A second phase of the proposed system was to predict the crop at farm-level based on the most frequent class detected in the sub-images of each crop. The results obtained at farm level were slightly lower than at the sub-images level, reaching the highest accuracy (0.826) with an intermediate size image (H = 80, W = 80). Thus, the convolutional neural networks proposed made it possible to automate the classification and discriminate accurately among traditional, intensive, and super-intensive planting systems. Road extraction is important for road network renewal, intelligent transportation systems and smart cities. This paper proposes an effective method to improve road extraction accuracy and reconstruct the broken road lines caused by ground occlusion. Firstly, an attention mechanism-based convolution neural network is established to enhance feature extraction capability. By highlighting key areas and restraining interference features, the road extraction accuracy is improved. Secondly, for the common broken road problem in the extraction results, a heuristic method based on connected domain analysis is proposed to reconstruct the road. An experiment is carried out on a benchmark dataset to prove the effectiveness of this method, and the result is compared with that of several famous deep learning models including FCN8s, SegNet, U-Net and D-Linknet. The comparison shows that this model increases the IOU value and the F1 score by 3.35–12.8% and 2.41–9.8%, respectively. In the realm of urban planning and environmental evaluation, the delineation and categorization of land types are pivotal. This study introduces a convolutional neural network-based image semantic segmentation approach to delineate parcel data in remote sensing imagery. The initial phase involved a comparative analysis of various CNN architectures. ResNet and VGG serve as the foundational networks for training, followed by a comparative assessment of the experimental outcomes. Subsequently, the VGG+U-Net model, which demonstrated superior efficacy, was chosen as the primary network. Enhancements to this model were made by integrating attention mechanisms. Specifically, three distinct attention mechanisms—spatial, SE, and channel—were incorporated into the VGG+U-Net framework, and various loss functions were evaluated and selected. The impact of these attention mechanisms, in conjunction with different loss functions, was scrutinized. This study proposes a novel network model, designated VGG+U-Net+Channel, that leverages the VGG architecture as the backbone network in conjunction with the U-Net structure and augments it with the channel attention mechanism to refine the model's performance. This refinement resulted in a 1.14% enhancement in the network's overall precision and marked improvements in MPA and MioU. A comparative analysis of the detection capabilities between the enhanced and original models was conducted, including a pixel count for each category to ascertain the extent of various semantic information. Research on transformers in remote sensing (RS), which started to increase after 2021, is facing the problem of a relative lack of review. To understand the trends of transformers in RS, we undertook a quantitative analysis of the major research on transformers over the past two years by dividing the application of transformers into eight domains: land use/land cover (LULC) classification, segmentation, fusion, change detection, object detection, object recognition, registration, and others. Quantitative results show that transformers achieve a higher accuracy in LULC classification and fusion, with more stable performance in segmentation and object detection. Combining the analysis results on LULC classification and segmentation, we have found that transformers need more parameters than convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Additionally, further research is also needed regarding inference speed to improve transformers' performance. It was determined that the most common application scenes for transformers in our database are urban, farmland, and water bodies. We also found that transformers are employed in the natural sciences such as agriculture and environmental protection rather than the humanities or economics. Finally, this work summarizes the analysis results of transformers in remote sensing obtained during the research process and provides a perspective on future directions of development. Super-resolution (SR) technology has emerged as an effective tool for image analysis and interpretation. However, single hyperspectral (HS) image SR remains challenging, due to the high spectral dimensionality and lack of available high-resolution information of auxiliary sources. To fully exploit the spectral and spatial characteristics, in this paper, a novel single HS image SR approach is proposed based on a spatial correlation-regularized unmixing convolutional neural network (CNN). The proposed approach takes advantage of a CNN to explore the collaborative spatial and spectral information of an HS image and infer the high-resolution abundance maps, thereby reconstructing the anticipated high-resolution HS image via the linear spectral mixture model. Moreover, a dual-branch architecture network and spatial spread transform function are employed to characterize the spatial correlation between the high- and low-resolution HS images, aiming at promoting the fidelity of the super-resolved image. Experiments on three public remote sensing HS images demonstrate the feasibility and superiority in terms of spectral fidelity, compared with some state-of-the-art HS image super-resolution methods. Real-time and high-precision land cover classification is the foundation for efficient and quantitative research on grassland degradation using remote sensing techniques. In view of the shortcomings of manual surveying and satellite remote sensing, this study focuses on the identification and classification of grass species indicating grassland degradation. We constructed a UAV-based hyperspectral remote sensing system and collected field data in grassland areas. By applying artificial intelligence technology, we developed a 3D_RNet-O model based on convolutional neural networks, effectively addressing technical challenges in hyperspectral remote sensing identification and classification of grassland degradation indicators, such as low reflectance of vegetation, flat spectral curves, and sparse distribution. The results showed that the model achieved a classification accuracy of 99.05% by optimizing hyperparameter combinations based on improving residual block structures. The establishment of the UAV-based hyperspectral remote sensing system and the proposed 3D_RNet-O classification model provide possibilities for further research on low-altitude hyperspectral remote sensing in grassland ecology. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) is a remote sensing image analysis paradigm that defines and examines image-objects: groups of neighboring pixels that represent real-world geographic objects. Recent reviews have examined methodological considerations and highlighted how GEOBIA improves upon the 30+ year pixel-based approach, particularly for H-resolution imagery. However, the literature also exposes an opportunity to improve guidance on the application of GEOBIA for novice practitioners. In this paper, we describe the theoretical foundations of GEOBIA and provide a comprehensive overview of the methodological workflow, including: (i) software-specific approaches (open-source and commercial); (ii) best practices informed by research; and (iii) the current status of methodological research. Building on this foundation, we then review recent research on the convergence of GEOBIA with deep convolutional neural networks, which we suggest is a new form of GEOBIA. Specifically, we discuss general integrative approaches and offer recommendations for future research. Overall, this paper describes the past, present, and anticipated future of GEOBIA in a novice-accessible format, while providing innovation and depth to experienced practitioners. Cloud detection is an important and difficult task in the pre-processing of satellite remote sensing data. The results of traditional cloud detection methods are often unsatisfactory in complex environments or the presence of various noise disturbances. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, deep learning methods have achieved great success in many fields such as image processing, speech recognition, autonomous driving, etc. This study proposes a deep learning model suitable for cloud detection, Cloud-AttU, which is based on a U-Net network and incorporates an attention mechanism. The Cloud-AttU model adopts the symmetric Encoder-Decoder structure, which achieves the fusion of high-level features and low-level features through the skip-connection operation, making the output results contain richer multi-scale information. This symmetrical network structure is concise and stable, significantly enhancing the effect of image segmentation. Based on the characteristics of cloud detection, the model is improved by introducing an attention mechanism that allows model to learn more effective features and distinguish between cloud and non-cloud pixels more accurately. The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper has a significant accuracy advantage over the traditional cloud detection method. The proposed method is also able to achieve great results in the presence of snow/ice disturbance and other bright non-cloud objects, with strong resistance to disturbance. In recent years, with the rapid development of deep learning technology, great progress has been made in remote sensing scene image classification. Compared with natural images, remote sensing scene images are usually more complex, with high inter-class similarity and large intra-class differences, which makes it difficult for commonly used networks to effectively learn the features of remote sensing scene images. In addition, most existing methods adopt hard labels to supervise the network model, which makes the model prone to losing fine-grained information of ground objects. In order to solve these problems, a feature-augmented self-distilled convolutional neural network (FASDNet) is proposed. First, ResNet34 is adopted as the backbone network to extract multi-level features of images. Next, a feature augmentation pyramid module (FAPM) is designed to extract and fuse multi-level feature information. Then, auxiliary branches are constructed to provide additional supervision information. The self-distillation method is utilized between the feature augmentation pyramid module and the backbone network, as well as between the backbone network and auxiliary branches. Finally, the proposed model is jointly supervised using feature distillation loss, logits distillation loss, and cross-entropy loss. A lot of experiments are conducted on four widely used remote sensing scene image datasets, and the experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to some state-ot-the-art classification methods. In high-resolution earth observation systems, object detection in high spatial resolution remote sensing images (HSRIs) is the key technology for automatic extraction, analysis and understanding of image information. With respect to the multi-angle features of object orientation in HSRIs object detection, this paper presents a novel HSRIs object detection method based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) with adaptive object orientation features. First, an adaptive object orientation regression method is proposed to obtain object regions in any direction. In the adaptive object orientation regression method, five coordinate parameters are used to regress the object region with any direction. Then, a CNN framework for object detection of HSRIs is designed using the adaptive object orientation regression method. Using multiple object detection datasets, the proposed method is compared with some state-of-the-art object detection methods. The experimental results show that the proposed method can more accurately detect objects with large aspect ratios and densely distributed objects than some state-of-the-art object detection methods using a horizontal bounding box, and obtain better object detection results for HSRIs. Wildfires are one of the most destructive natural disasters that can affect our environment, with significant effects also on wildlife. Recently, climate change and human activities have resulted in higher frequencies of wildfires throughout the world. Timely and accurate detection of the burned areas can help to make decisions for their management. Remote sensing satellite imagery can have a key role in mapping burned areas due to its wide coverage, high-resolution data collection, and low capture times. However, although many studies have reported on burned area mapping based on remote sensing imagery in recent decades, accurate burned area mapping remains a major challenge due to the complexity of the background and the diversity of the burned areas. This paper presents a novel framework for burned area mapping based on Deep Siamese Morphological Neural Network (DSMNN-Net) and heterogeneous datasets. The DSMNN-Net framework is based on change detection through proposing a pre/post-fire method that is compatible with heterogeneous remote sensing datasets. The proposed network combines multiscale convolution layers and morphological layers (erosion and dilation) to generate deep features. To evaluate the performance of the method proposed here, two case study areas in Australian forests were selected. The framework used can better detect burned areas compared to other state-of-the-art burned area mapping procedures, with a performance of >98% for overall accuracy index, and a kappa coefficient of >0.9, using multispectral Sentinel-2 and hyperspectral PRISMA image datasets. Building extraction from remote sensing (RS) images is a fundamental task for geospatial applications, aiming to obtain morphology, location, and other information about buildings from RS images, which is significant for geographic monitoring and construction of human activity areas. In recent years, deep learning (DL) technology has made remarkable progress and breakthroughs in the field of RS and also become a central and state-of-the-art method for building extraction. This paper provides an overview over the developed DL-based building extraction methods from RS images. Firstly, we describe the DL technologies of this field as well as the loss function over semantic segmentation. Next, a description of important publicly available datasets and evaluation metrics directly related to the problem follows. Then, the main DL methods are reviewed, highlighting contributions and significance in the field. After that, comparative results on several publicly available datasets are given for the described methods, following up with a discussion. Mapping land surface water automatically and accurately is closely related to human activity, biological reproduction, and the ecological environment. High spatial resolution remote sensing image (HSRRSI) data provide extensive details for land surface water and gives reliable data support for the accurate extraction of land surface water information. The convolutional neural network (CNN), widely applied in semantic segmentation, provides an automatic extraction method in land surface water information. This paper proposes a new lightweight CNN named Lightweight Multi-Scale Land Surface Water Extraction Network (LMSWENet) to extract the land surface water information based on GaoFen-1D satellite data of Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. To verify the superiority of LMSWENet, we compared the efficiency and water extraction accuracy with four mainstream CNNs (DeeplabV3+, FCN, PSPNet, and UNet) using quantitative comparison and visual comparison. Furthermore, we used LMSWENet to extract land surface water information of Wuhan on a large scale and produced the land surface water map of Wuhan for 2020 (LSWMWH-2020) with 2m spatial resolution. Random and equidistant validation points verified the mapping accuracy of LSWMWH-2020. The results are summarized as follows: (1) Compared with the other four CNNs, LMSWENet has a lightweight structure, significantly reducing the algorithm complexity and training time. (2) LMSWENet has a good performance in extracting various types of water bodies and suppressing noises because it introduces channel and spatial attention mechanisms and combines features from multiple scales. The result of land surface water extraction demonstrates that the performance of LMSWENet exceeds that of the other four CNNs. (3) LMSWENet can meet the requirement of high-precision mapping on a large scale. The interest in change detection in the field of remote sensing has increased in the last few years. Searching for changes in satellite images has many useful applications, ranging from land cover and land use analysis to anomaly detection. In particular, urban change detection provides an efficient tool to study urban spread and growth through several years of observation. At the same time, change detection is often a computationally challenging and time-consuming task; therefore, a standard approach with manual detection of the elements of interest by experts in the domain of Earth Observation needs to be replaced by innovative methods that can guarantee optimal results with unquestionable value and within reasonable time. In this paper, we present two different approaches to change detection (semantic segmentation and classification) that both exploit convolutional neural networks to address these particular needs, which can be further refined and used in post-processing workflows for a large variety of applications. Satellite images have drawn increasing interest from a wide variety of users, including business and government, ever since their increased usage in important fields ranging from weather, forestry and agriculture to surface changes and biodiversity monitoring. Recent updates in the field have also introduced various deep learning (DL) architectures to satellite imagery as a means of extracting useful information. However, this new approach comes with its own issues, including the fact that many users utilize ready-made cloud services (both public and private) in order to take advantage of built-in DL algorithms and thus avoid the complexity of developing their own DL architectures. However, this presents new challenges to protecting data against unauthorized access, mining and usage of sensitive information extracted from that data. Therefore, new privacy concerns regarding sensitive data in satellite images have arisen. This research proposes an efficient approach that takes advantage of privacy-preserving deep learning (PPDL)-based techniques to address privacy concerns regarding data from satellite images when applying public DL models. In this paper, we proposed a partially homomorphic encryption scheme (a Paillier scheme), which enables processing of confidential information without exposure of the underlying data. Our method achieves robust results when applied to a custom convolutional neural network (CNN) as well as to existing transfer learning methods. The proposed encryption scheme also allows for training CNN models on encrypted data directly, which requires lower computational overhead. Our experiments have been performed on a real-world dataset covering several regions across Saudi Arabia. The results demonstrate that our CNN-based models were able to retain data utility while maintaining data privacy. Security parameters such as correlation coefficient (−0.004), entropy (7.95), energy (0.01), contrast (10.57), number of pixel change rate (4.86), unified average change intensity (33.66), and more are in favor of our proposed encryption scheme. Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) classification using remote sensing data is a challenging problem that has evolved with the update and launch of new satellites in orbit. As new satellites are launched with higher spatial and spectral resolution and shorter revisit times, LULC classification has evolved to take advantage of these improvements. However, these advancements also bring new challenges, such as the need for more sophisticated algorithms to process the increased volume and complexity of data. In recent years, deep learning techniques, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have shown promising results in this area. Training deep learning models with complex architectures require cutting-edge hardware, which can be expensive and not accessible to everyone. In this study, a simple CNN based on the LeNet architecture is proposed to perform LULC classification over Sentinel-2 images. Simple CNNs such as LeNet require less computational resources compared to more-complex architectures. A total of 11 LULC classes were used for training and validating the model, which were then used for classifying the sub-basins. The analysis showed that the proposed CNN achieved an Overall Accuracy of 96.51% with a kappa coefficient of 0.962 in the validation data, outperforming traditional machine learning methods such as Random Forest, Support Vector Machine and Artificial Neural Networks, as well as state-of-the-art complex deep learning methods such as ResNet, DenseNet and EfficientNet. The accuracy of most SAR-based flood classification and segmentation derived from semi-automated algorithms is often limited due to complicated radar backscatter. However, deep learning techniques, now widely applied in image classifications, have demonstrated excellent potential for mapping complex scenes and improving flood mapping accuracy. Therefore, this study aims to compare the image classification accuracy of three convolutional neural network (CNN)-based encoder–decoders (i.e., U-Net, PSPNet and DeepLapV3) by leveraging the end-to-end ArcGIS Pro workflow. A specific objective of this method consists of labelling and training each CNN model separately on publicly available dual-polarised pre-flood data (i.e., Sentinel-1 and NovaSAR-1) based on the ResNet convolutional backbone via a transfer learning approach. The neural network results were evaluated using multiple model training trials, validation loss, training loss and confusion matrix from test datasets. During testing on the post-flood data, the results revealed that U-Net marginally outperformed the other models. In this study, the overall accuracy and F1-score reached 99% and 98% on the test data, respectively. Interestingly, the segmentation results showed less use of manual cleaning, thus encouraging the use of open-source image data for the rapid, accurate and continuous monitoring of floods using the CNN-based approach. Supraglacial meltwater accumulation on ice sheets can be a main driver for accelerated ice discharge, mass loss, and global sea-level-rise. With further increasing surface air temperatures, meltwater-induced hydrofracturing, basal sliding, or surface thinning will cumulate and most likely trigger unprecedented ice mass loss on the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. While the Greenland surface hydrological network as well as its impacts on ice dynamics and mass balance has been studied in much detail, Antarctic supraglacial lakes remain understudied with a circum-Antarctic record of their spatio-temporal development entirely lacking. This study provides the first automated supraglacial lake extent mapping method using Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery over Antarctica and complements the developed optical Sentinel-2 supraglacial lake detection algorithm presented in our companion paper. In detail, we propose the use of a modified U-Net for semantic segmentation of supraglacial lakes in single-polarized Sentinel-1 imagery. The convolutional neural network (CNN) is implemented with residual connections for optimized performance as well as an Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) module for multiscale feature extraction. The algorithm is trained on 21,200 Sentinel-1 image patches and evaluated in ten spatially or temporally independent test acquisitions. In addition, George VI Ice Shelf is analyzed for intra-annual lake dynamics throughout austral summer 2019/2020 and a decision-level fused Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 maximum lake extent mapping product is presented for January 2020 revealing a more complete supraglacial lake coverage (~770 km2) than the individual single-sensor products. Classification results confirm the reliability of the proposed workflow with an average Kappa coefficient of 0.925 and a F 1 -score of 93.0% for the supraglacial water class across all test regions. Furthermore, the algorithm is applied in an additional test region covering supraglacial lakes on the Greenland ice sheet which further highlights the potential for spatio-temporal transferability. Future work involves the integration of more training data as well as intra-annual analyses of supraglacial lake occurrence across the whole continent and with focus on supraglacial lake development throughout a summer melt season and into Antarctic winter. Polarization can provide information largely uncorrelated with the spectrum and intensity. Therefore, polarimetric imaging (PI) techniques have significant advantages in many fields, e.g., ocean observation, remote sensing (RS), biomedical diagnosis, and autonomous vehicles. Recently, with the increasing amount of data and the rapid development of physical models, deep learning (DL) and its related technique have become an irreplaceable solution for solving various tasks and breaking the limitations of traditional methods. PI and DL have been combined successfully to provide brand-new solutions to many practical applications. This review briefly introduces PI and DL's most relevant concepts and models. It then shows how DL has been applied for PI tasks, including image restoration, object detection, image fusion, scene classification, and resolution improvement. The review covers the state-of-the-art works combining PI with DL algorithms and recommends some potential future research directions. We hope that the present work will be helpful for researchers in the fields of both optical imaging and RS, and that it will stimulate more ideas in this exciting research field. Featured Application: Change detection for remote sensing imageries. This study proposes a bilateral attention U-Net with a dissimilarity attention gate (DAG) for change detection on remote sensing imageries. The proposed network is designed with a bilateral dissimilarity encoding for the DAG calculation to handle reversible input images, resulting in high detection rates regardless of the order of the two input images for change detection. The DAG exploits all the combinations of joint features to avoid spectral information loss fed into an attention gate on the decoder side. The effectiveness of the proposed method was evaluated on the KOMPSAT-3 satellite images dataset and the aerial change detection dataset (CDD). Its performance was better than that of conventional methods (specifically, U-Net, ATTUNet, and Modified-UNet++) as it achieved average F1-score and kappa coefficient (KC) values of 0.68 and 66.93, respectively, for the KOMPSAT-3 dataset. For CDD, it achieved F1-score and KC values of 0.70 and 68.74, respectively, which are also better values than those achieved by conventional methods. Semantic segmentation plays an important role in being able to understand the content of remote sensing images. In recent years, deep learning methods based on Fully Convolutional Networks (FCNs) have proved to be effective for the sematic segmentation of remote sensing images. However, the rich information and complex content makes the training of networks for segmentation challenging, and the datasets are necessarily constrained. In this paper, we propose a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model called Dual Path Attention Network (DPA-Net) that has a simple modular structure and can be added to any segmentation model to enhance its ability to learn features. Two types of attention module are appended to the segmentation model, one focusing on spatial information the other focusing upon the channel. Then, the outputs of these two attention modules are fused to further improve the network's ability to extract features, thus contributing to more precise segmentation results. Finally, data pre-processing and augmentation strategies are used to compensate for the small number of datasets and uneven distribution. The proposed network was tested on the Gaofen Image Dataset (GID). The results show that the network outperformed U-Net, PSP-Net, and DeepLab V3+ in terms of the mean IoU by 0.84%, 2.54%, and 1.32%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-Performance Computing (HPC) has recently been attracting more attention in remote sensing applications due to the challenges posed by the increased amount of open data that are produced daily by Earth Observation (EO) programs. The unique parallel computing environments and programming techniques that are integrated in HPC systems are able to solve large-scale problems such as the training of classification algorithms with large amounts of Remote Sensing (RS) data. This paper shows that the training of state-of-the-art deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can be efficiently performed in distributed fashion using parallel implementation techniques on HPC machines containing a large number of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). The experimental results confirm that distributed training can drastically reduce the amount of time needed to perform full training, resulting in near linear scaling without loss of test accuracy. Deep learning is a popular topic in machine learning and artificial intelligence research and has achieved remarkable results in various fields. In geological remote sensing, mineral mapping is an appealing application of hyperspectral remote sensing for geological surveyors. Whether deep learning can improve the mineral identification ability in hyperspectral remote sensing images, especially for the discrimination of spectrally similar and intimately mixed minerals, needs to be evaluated. In this study, shortwave airborne spectrographic imager (SASI) hyperspectral images of the Baiyanghe uranium deposit in Northwestern Xinjiang, China, were used as experimental data. Three deep neural network (DNN) models were designed: a fully connected neural network (FCNN), a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN), and a one-dimensional and two-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D and 2D CNN). A sample dataset containing five minerals was constructed for model training and validation, which was divided into training, validation and test sets at a ratio of 6:2:2. The final test accuracies of the FCNN, 1D CNN, and 1D and 2D CNN were 91.24%, 93.67% and 94.77%, respectively. The three DNNs were used for mineral identification and mapping of SASI hyperspectral images of the Baiyanghe uranium mining area. The mapping results were compared with the mapping results of the support vector machine (SVM) and the mixture-tuned matched filtering (MTMF) method. Combined with the ground spectral data obtained by the spectrometer, spectral verification and interpretation were carried out on sections that the two kinds of methods identified differently. The verification results show that the mapping results of the 1D and 2D CNN were more accurate than those of the other methods. More importantly, for minerals with similar spectral characteristics, such as short-wavelength white mica and medium-wavelength white mica, the 1D and 2D CNN model had a more accurate discrimination effect than the other DNN models, indicating that the introduction of spatial information can improve the mineral identification ability in hyperspectral remote sensing images. Pansharpening methods based on deep learning can obtain high-quality, high-resolution multispectral images and are gradually becoming an active research topic. To combine deep learning and remote sensing domain knowledge more efficiently, we propose a double-stack aggregation network using a feature-travel strategy for pansharpening. The proposed network comprises two important designs. First, we propose a double-stack feature aggregation module that can efficiently retain useful feature information by aggregating features extracted at different levels. The module introduces a new multiscale, large-kernel convolutional block in the feature extraction stage to maintain the overall computational power while expanding the receptive field and obtaining detailed feature information. We also introduce a feature-travel strategy to effectively complement feature details on multiple scales. By resampling the source images, we use three pairs of source images at various scales as the input to the network. The feature-travel strategy lets the extracted features loop through the three scales to supplement the effective feature details. Extensive experiments on three satellite datasets show that the proposed model achieves significant improvements in both spatial and spectral quality measurements compared to state-of-the-art methods. In recent years, hyperspectral image (HSI) classification has become a hot research direction in remote sensing image processing. Benefiting from the development of deep learning, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown extraordinary achievements in HSI classification. Numerous methods combining CNNs and attention mechanisms (AMs) have been proposed for HSI classification. However, to fully mine the features of HSI, some of the previous methods apply dense connections to enhance the feature transfer between each convolution layer. Although dense connections allow these methods to fully extract features in a few training samples, it decreases the model efficiency and increases the computational cost. Furthermore, to balance model performance against complexity, the AMs in these methods compress a large number of channels or spatial resolutions during the training process, which results in a large amount of useful information being discarded. To tackle these issues, in this article, a novel one-shot dense network with polarized attention, namely, OSDN, was proposed for HSI classification. More precisely, since HSI contains rich spectral and spatial information, the OSDN has two independent branches to extract spectral and spatial features, respectively. Similarly, the polarized AMs contain two components: channel-only AMs and spatial-only AMs. Both polarized AMs can use a specially designed filtering method to reduce the complexity of the model while maintaining high internal resolution in both the channel and spatial dimensions. To verify the effectiveness and lightness of OSDN, extensive experiments were carried out on five benchmark HSI datasets, namely, Pavia University (PU), Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Botswana (BS), Houston 2013 (HS), and Salinas Valley (SV). Due to technical and budget limitations, there are inevitably some trade-offs in the design of remote sensing instruments, making it difficult to acquire high spatiotemporal resolution remote sensing images simultaneously. To address this problem, this paper proposes a new data fusion model named the deep convolutional spatiotemporal fusion network (DCSTFN), which makes full use of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to derive high spatiotemporal resolution images from remotely sensed images with high temporal but low spatial resolution (HTLS) and low temporal but high spatial resolution (LTHS). The DCSTFN model is composed of three major parts: the expansion of the HTLS images, the extraction of high frequency components from LTHS images, and the fusion of extracted features. The inputs of the proposed network include a pair of HTLS and LTHS reference images from a single day and another HTLS image on the prediction date. Convolution is used to extract key features from inputs, and deconvolution is employed to expand the size of HTLS images. The features extracted from HTLS and LTHS images are then fused with the aid of an equation that accounts for temporal ground coverage changes. The output image on the prediction day has the spatial resolution of LTHS and temporal resolution of HTLS. Overall, the DCSTFN model establishes a complex but direct non-linear mapping between the inputs and the output. Experiments with MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat Operational Land Imager (OLI) images show that the proposed CNN-based approach not only achieves state-of-the-art accuracy, but is also more robust than conventional spatiotemporal fusion algorithms. In addition, DCSTFN is a faster and less time-consuming method to perform the data fusion with the trained network, and can potentially be applied to the bulk processing of archived data. Models based on capsule neural network (CapsNet), a novel deep learning method, have recently made great achievements in hyperspectral remote sensing image (HSI) classification due to their excellent ability to implicitly model the spatial relationship knowledge embedded in HSIs. However, the number of labeled samples is a common bottleneck in HSI classification, limiting the performance of these deep learning models. To alleviate the problem of limited labeled samples and further explore the potential of CapsNet in the HSI classification field, this study proposes a multiscale feature aggregation capsule neural network (MS-CapsNet) based on CapsNet via the implementation of two branches that simultaneously extract spectral, local spatial, and global spatial features to integrate multiscale features and improve model robustness. Furthermore, because deep features are generally more discriminative than shallow features, two kinds of capsule residual (CapsRES) blocks based on 3D convolutional capsule (3D-ConvCaps) layers and residual connections are proposed to increase the depth of the network and solve the limited labeled sample problem in HSI classification. Moreover, a squeeze-and-excitation (SE) block is introduced in the shallow layers of MS-CapsNet to enhance its feature extraction ability. In addition, a reasonable initialization strategy that transfers parameters from two well-designed, pretrained deep convolutional capsule networks is introduced to help the model find a good set of initializing weight parameters and further improve the HSI classification accuracy of MS-CapsNet. Recent years have seen rapid progress in target-detection missions, whereas small targets, dense target distribution, and shadow occlusion continue to hinder progress in the detection of small targets, such as cars, in remote sensing images. To address this shortcoming, we propose herein a backbone feature-extraction network called "RepDarkNet" that adds several convolutional layers to CSPDarkNet53. RepDarkNet considerably improves the overall network accuracy with almost no increase in inference time. In addition, we propose a multi-scale cross-layer detector that significantly improves the capability of the network to detect small targets. Finally, a feature fusion network is proposed to further improve the performance of the algorithm in the AP@0.75 case. Experiments show that the proposed method dramatically improves detection accuracy, achieving AP = 75.53% for the Dior-vehicle dataset and mAP = 84.3% for the Dior dataset, both of which exceed the state-of-the-art level. The registration of multi-temporal remote sensing images with abundant information and complex changes is an important preprocessing step for subsequent applications. This paper presents a novel two-stage deep learning registration method based on sub-image matching. Unlike the conventional registration framework, the proposed network learns the mapping between matched sub-images and the geometric transformation parameters directly. In the first stage, the matching of sub-images (MSI), sub-images cropped from the images are matched through the corresponding heatmaps, which are made of the predicted similarity of each sub-image pairs. The second stage, the estimation of transformation parameters (ETP), a network with weight structure and position embedding estimates the global transformation parameters from the matched pairs. The network can deal with an uncertain number of matched sub-image inputs and reduce the impact of outliers. Furthermore, the sample sharing training strategy and the augmentation based on the bounding rectangle are introduced. We evaluated our method by comparing the conventional and deep learning methods qualitatively and quantitatively on Google Earth, ISPRS, and WHU Building Datasets. The experiments showed that our method obtained the probability of correct keypoints (PCK) of over 99% at α   = 0.05 (α : the normalized distance threshold) and achieved a maximum increase of 16.8% at α   = 0.01, compared with the latest method. In various applications of airborne laser scanning (ALS), the classification of the point cloud is a basic and key step. It requires assigning category labels to each point, such as ground, building or vegetation. Convolutional neural networks have achieved great success in image classification and semantic segmentation, but they cannot be directly applied to point cloud classification because of the disordered and unstructured characteristics of point clouds. In this paper, we design a novel convolution operator to extract local features directly from unstructured points. Based on this convolution operator, we define the convolution layer, construct a convolution neural network to learn multi-level features from the point cloud, and obtain the category label of each point in an end-to-end manner. The proposed method is evaluated on two ALS datasets: the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) Vaihingen 3D Labeling benchmark and the 2019 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) Data Fusion Contest (DFC) 3D dataset. The results show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance for ALS point cloud classification, especially for the larger dataset DFC: we get an overall accuracy of 97.74% and a mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 0.9202, ranking in first place on the contest website. Remote sensing image dehazing is an extremely complex issue due to the irregular and non-uniform distribution of haze. In this paper, a prior-based dense attentive dehazing network (DADN) is proposed for single remote sensing image haze removal. The proposed network, which is constructed based on dense blocks and attention blocks, contains an encoder-decoder architecture, which enables it to directly learn the mapping between the input images and the corresponding haze-free image, without being dependent on the traditional atmospheric scattering model (ASM). To better handle non-uniform hazy remote sensing images, we propose to combine a haze density prior with deep learning, where an initial haze density map (HDM) is firstly extracted from the original hazy image, and is subsequently utilized as the input of the network, together with the original hazy image. Meanwhile, a large-scale hazy remote sensing dataset is created for training and testing of the proposed method, which contains both uniform and non-uniform, synthetic and real hazy remote sensing images. Digital image devices have been widely applied in many fields, such as individual recognition and remote sensing. The captured image is a degraded image from the latent observation, where the degradation processing is affected by some factors, such as lighting and noise corruption. Specifically, noise is generated in the processing of transmission and compression from the unknown latent observation. Thus, it is essential to use image denoising techniques to remove noise and recover the latent observation from the given degraded image. In this research, a supervised encoder–decoder convolution neural network was used to fix image distortion stemming from the limited accuracy of inverse filter methods (Wiener filter, Lucy–Richardson deconvolution, etc.). Clouds and snow in remote sensing imageries cover underlying surface information, reducing image availability. Moreover, they interact with each other, decreasing the cloud and snow detection accuracy. In this study, we propose a convolutional neural network for cloud and snow detection, named the cloud and snow detection network (CSD-Net). It incorporates the multi-scale feature fusion module (MFF) and the controllably deep supervision and feature fusion structure (CDSFF). MFF can capture and aggregate features at various scales, ensuring that the extracted high-level semantic features of clouds and snow are more distinctive. CDSFF can provide a deeply supervised mechanism with hinge loss and combine information from adjacent layers to gain more representative features. It ensures the gradient flow is more oriented and error-less, while retaining more effective information. Additionally, a high-resolution cloud and snow dataset based on WorldView2 (CSWV) was created and released. This dataset meets the training requirements of deep learning methods for clouds and snow in high-resolution remote sensing images. Based on the datasets with varied resolutions, CSD-Net is compared to eight state-of-the-art deep learning methods. The experiment results indicate that CSD-Net has an excellent detection accuracy and efficiency. Specifically, the mean intersection over the union (MIoU) of CSD-Net is the highest in the corresponding experiment. Furthermore, the number of parameters in our proposed network is just 7.61 million, which is the lowest of the tested methods. It only has 88.06 GFLOPs of floating point operations, which is less than the U-Net, DeepLabV3+, PSPNet, SegNet-Modified, MSCFF, and GeoInfoNet. In most practical applications of remote sensing images, high-resolution multispectral images are needed. Pansharpening aims to generate high-resolution multispectral (MS) images from the input of high spatial resolution single-band panchromatic (PAN) images and low spatial resolution multispectral images. Inspired by the remarkable results of other researchers in pansharpening based on deep learning, we propose a multilevel dense connection network with a feedback connection. Our network consists of four parts. The first part consists of two identical subnetworks to extract features from PAN and MS images. The second part is a multilevel feature fusion and recovery network, which is used to fuse images in the feature domain and to encode and decode features at different levels so that the network can fully capture different levels of information. The third part is a continuous feedback operation, which refines shallow features by feedback. The fourth part is an image reconstruction network. High-quality images are recovered by making full use of multistage decoding features through dense connections. Experiments on different satellite datasets show that our proposed method is superior to existing methods, through subjective visual evaluation and objective evaluation indicators. Compared with the results of other models, our results achieve significant gains on the multiple objective index values used to measure the spectral quality and spatial details of the generated image, namely spectral angle mapper (SAM), relative global dimensional synthesis error (ERGAS), and structural similarity (SSIM). Collapsed buildings are usually linked with the highest number of human casualties reported after a natural disaster; therefore, quickly finding collapsed buildings can expedite rescue operations and save human lives. Recently, many researchers and agencies have tried to integrate satellite imagery into rapid response. The U.S. Defense Innovation Unit Experimental (DIUx) and National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) have recently released a ready-to-use dataset known as xView that contains thousands of labeled VHR RGB satellite imagery scenes with 30-cm spatial and 8-bit radiometric resolutions, respectively. Two of the labeled classes represent demolished buildings with 1067 instances and intact buildings with more than 300,000 instances, and both classes are associated with building footprints. In this study, we are using the xView imagery, with building labels (demolished and intact) to create a deep learning framework for classifying buildings as demolished or intact after a natural hazard event. We have used a modified U-Net style fully convolutional neural network (CNN). The results show that the proposed framework has 78% and 95% sensitivity in detecting the demolished and intact buildings, respectively, within the xView dataset. We have also tested the transferability and performance of the trained network on an independent dataset from the 19 September 2017 M 7.1 Pueblo earthquake in central Mexico using Google Earth imagery. To this end, we tested the network on 97 buildings including 10 demolished ones by feeding imagery and building footprints into the trained algorithm. In recent years, hyperspectral images (HSIs) have attained considerable attention in computer vision (CV) due to their wide utility in remote sensing. Unlike images with three or lesser channels, HSIs have a large number of spectral bands. Recent works demonstrate the use of modern deep learning based CV techniques like convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for analyzing HSI. CNNs have receptive fields (RFs) fueled by learnable weights, which are trained to extract useful features from images. In this work, a novel multi-receptive CNN module called GhoMR is proposed for HSI classification. GhoMR utilizes blocks containing several RFs, extracting features in a residual fashion. Each RF extracts features which are used by other RFs to extract more complex features in a hierarchical manner. However, the higher the number of RFs, the greater the associated weights, thus heavier is the network. Most complex architectures suffer from this shortcoming. To tackle this, the recently found Ghost module is used as the basic building unit. Ghost modules address the feature redundancy in CNNs by extracting only limited features and performing cheap transformations on them, thus reducing the overall parameters in the network. To test the discriminative potential of GhoMR, a simple network called GhoMR-Net is constructed using GhoMR modules, and experiments are performed on three public HSI data sets—Indian Pines, University of Pavia, and Salinas Scene. The classification performance is measured using three metrics—overall accuracy (OA), Kappa coefficient (Kappa), and average accuracy (AA). Comparisons with ten state-of-the-art architectures are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method further. Automatic water body extraction method is important for monitoring floods, droughts, and water resources. In this study, a new semantic segmentation convolutional neural network named the multi-scale water extraction convolutional neural network (MWEN) is proposed to automatically extract water bodies from GaoFen-1 (GF-1) remote sensing images. Three convolutional neural networks for semantic segmentation (fully convolutional network (FCN), Unet, and Deeplab V3+) are employed to compare with the water bodies extraction performance of MWEN. Visual comparison and five evaluation metrics are used to evaluate the performance of these convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The results show the following. (1) The results of water body extraction in multiple scenes using the MWEN are better than those of the other comparison methods based on the indicators. (2) The MWEN method has the capability to accurately extract various types of water bodies, such as urban water bodies, open ponds, and plateau lakes. (3) By fusing features extracted at different scales, the MWEN has the capability to extract water bodies with different sizes and suppress noise, such as building shadows and highways. Therefore, MWEN is a robust water extraction algorithm for GaoFen-1 satellite images and has the potential to conduct water body mapping with multisource high-resolution satellite remote sensing data. Despite recent advances of deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in various computer vision tasks, their potential for classification of multispectral remote sensing images has not been thoroughly explored. In particular, the applications of deep CNNs using optical remote sensing data have focused on the classification of very high-resolution aerial and satellite data, owing to the similarity of these data to the large datasets in computer vision. Accordingly, this study presents a detailed investigation of state-of-the-art deep learning tools for classification of complex wetland classes using multispectral RapidEye optical imagery. Specifically, we examine the capacity of seven well-known deep convnets, namely DenseNet121, InceptionV3, VGG16, VGG19, Xception, ResNet50, and InceptionResNetV2, for wetland mapping in Canada. In addition, the classification results obtained from deep CNNs are compared with those based on conventional machine learning tools, including Random Forest and Support Vector Machine, to further evaluate the efficiency of the former to classify wetlands. The results illustrate that the full-training of convnets using five spectral bands outperforms the other strategies for all convnets. InceptionResNetV2, ResNet50, and Xception are distinguished as the top three convnets, providing state-of-the-art classification accuracies of 96.17%, 94.81%, and 93.57%, respectively. The classification accuracies obtained using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) are 74.89% and 76.08%, respectively, considerably inferior relative to CNNs. Importantly, InceptionResNetV2 is consistently found to be superior compared to all other convnets, suggesting the integration of Inception and ResNet modules is an efficient architecture for classifying complex remote sensing scenes such as wetlands.
