The cooling system is the auxiliary equipment that consumes the most energy in a data center, accounting for about 30 to 50% of the total energy consumption. In order to effectively reduce the energy consumption of a data center, it is very important to improve the heat exchange efficiency at the chip level. Compared with air cooling, single-phase cold plate liquid cooling, and immersion liquid cooling, the flat loop heat pipe (FLHP) is considered to be a better chip-level cooling solution for data centers. It has extremely high heat transfer efficiency and heat flux variability, and it can avoid the operation risk caused by liquid entering the server. In this paper, a FLHP with an evaporator designed with a "Tesla valve" flow channel configuration is developed. Experiments on the FLHP are carried out, focusing on the installation angles and cooling condition factors. The results show that an inclination angle of 20° is the critical point of the influence of gravity on the performance of the FLHP; to ensure good operation of the FLHP, the installation angle should be greater than 20°. The equivalent heat transfer coefficients of the FLHP condenser under different cooling conditions are calculated. It is found that water cooling can provide higher cooling heat transfer coefficients with lower energy consumption and operating noise. Additionally, the heat transfer limit, operating temperature uniformity, and start-up stability of the FLHP are significantly improved under water cooling conditions. The maximum heat load of the FLHP is up to 230 W, and the temperature difference of the evaporator surface can be controlled within 0.5 °C, under 20 °C water cooling. Finally, using the FLHP for thermal management of the chip, its heat transfer efficiency is 166 and 41% higher than that of air cooling and water cooling, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to deeply explore the influence of different inclination conditions on the heat transfer characteristics and broaden the application scene of a pulsating heat pipe. A test device for the heat transfer performance of a pulsating heat pipe under different inclination angles is designed and built. Under the condition of 70% liquid filling rate, ethanol and HFE-7100 are selected to carry out the experimental test with heating power of 40–140 W and dimensionless thermal difference of 0–0.56. The heat transfer performance, the temperature in the evaporation section and the internal pressure fluctuation of the pulsating heat pipe were experimentally studied. The results show that under the condition of uniform heat flux, for ethanol working medium, when the pulsating heat pipe is heated at 40 W, the operating thermal resistance varies significantly with different installation angles. At this time, the operating thermal resistance of a pulsating heat pipe with installation angles of 45°, 70°, 90° and D90° is 1.38 °C/W, 1.60 °C/W, 1.73 °C/W and 2.07 °C/W, respectively. With the increase in installation angle, the operating thermal resistance also increases gradually, reaching the maximum at 90°. At low heating power, the effect of the installation angle on the ethanol working medium is significantly greater than that of HFE-7100 working medium. The HFE-7100 working medium showed lower operating thermal resistance at low heating power, but with the increase in heating power, the operating thermal resistance of the two working medium gradually approached a 70% filling rate. Under non-uniform heating conditions, when HFE-7100 is used as a working fluid, the operating thermal resistance of a pulsating heat pipe under different heating power was lower than that of the ethanol working medium. The operating thermal resistance is less affected by the installation angle, and the overall heat transfer performance is better. The phenomenon in which the ethanol working medium is obviously affected by the installation angle can be improved by non-uniform heating conditions. For ethanol working medium, when the dimensionless heat difference reaches 0.33 under the condition of a 45° installation angle, the average temperature fluctuation in the evaporation section appears gentle. At this installation angle, the internal working medium of the four elbow pulsating heat pipe devices used in this research more easily forms a cycle in the pipe than the 90° installation angle. Therefore, heat transfer during flow with a change of phase in mini-channels turned out to be a necessary solution to achieve high heat fluxes with reasonably miniature geometrical dimensions and a temperature at a not very high level within the heat exchanger device. The authors noted that there was an increase in the heat flux and the heat transfer coefficient for surfaces with microchannels. The transfer of large heat fluxes is one of the most significant issues in modern technology. Currently, the growing need for efficient refrigeration resources in the industrial sector has led to an increasing interest in finding technologies with a higher heat removal potential and better cooling performance. Along these lines, two-phase liquid cooling appears to be a very interesting solution, with the CLTPT (closed-loop two-phase thermosyphon) being one of the leading alternatives. Most works in the scientific literature study loop thermosyphons that work in flow boiling conditions in steady state. The present paper analyzes the transient thermal behavior of a pool boiling CLTPT gravitational channel as a passive cooling system using NOVEC 649 as working fluid. The evaporator works with two submerged cylindrical heaters that represent different heat sources located in different positions. The initial transient behavior and consequent instabilities of a laboratory-scale facility were studied, followed by a stability analysis for various power inputs. Parameters such as temperature and pressure along the experimental setup were monitored, and the effects of internal pressure and room conditions were also tested. The results show some instabilities in the process to start the flow circulation and a relative stability and quick adaptation to changes when circulation is reached. The temperature in the evaporator chamber was highly homogeneous during the whole process; however, the temperature changes in the riser and the loop top were delayed with respect to the evaporator zone. The analysis shows several pressure and temperature raises before the vapor flux reaches the condenser. When the flow circulation is established, the system becomes highly stable and thermally homogeneous, decreasing the thermal resistance when increasing the power input. The stability analysis also showed that, when the system reaches the steady state, the changes in the power input produce a transient increase in the pressure and temperature of the fluid, followed by a quick decrease of the previous steady state values. The heat transfer analysis in the evaporator shows a higher heat flux on the upper heater caused by the buoyancy flow that rises from the lower heater. The heat transfer performance of the evaporator significantly affects the heat transfer capacity of the loop heat pipe (LHP). The vapor blanket can be formed once the vapor penetrates the wick especially at high heat flux, resulting in an unsaturated state of the wick and deteriorating the evaporator performance. It is crucial to understand the liquid–vapor behavior for enhancing the LHP performance by investigating the fundamental heat and mass transfer in the wick with phase-change. However, previous modeling studies only considered a single-phase flow or complete saturation in the wick, and the capillary effect on the fluid states was rarely taken into account. The present work developed two mathematical models based on the assumptions of saturated and unsaturated wicks. The fluid states were analyzed at the liquid–vapor interface under the consideration of the capillary effect, and a pore-scale evaporation model was applied to study the phase change behavior and interfacial heat and mass transfer. The relative permeability was introduced to describe the two-phase flow in the porous wick, and the capillary force was modeled as a function of the local saturation in the two-phase region. The temperature results calculated by the models were compared with the experimental results, and the assumption that the vapor penetration leads to deterioration of evaporator performance at high heat flux was validated. Vapor blanket thickness can be estimated through the saturation profile, which provides a simple and effective method. It was also found that the capillary number ω was the key factor affecting the thickness of the vapor blanket. The greater the ω , the faster the vapor blanket thickness increases. The application of polymeric and composite materials in two-phase passive heat transfer devices is reviewed critically, with a focus on advantages and disadvantages of these materials in thermal management systems. Recent technology developments led to an increase of the power density in several applications including portable electronics, space and deployable systems, etc., which require high-performance and compact thermal management systems. In this context, passive two-phase systems are the most promising heat transfer devices to dissipate large heat fluxes without external power supply. Usually, heat transfer systems are built with metals due to their excellent thermal properties. However, there is an increasing interest in replacing metallic materials with polymers and composites that can offer cost-effectiveness, light weight and high mechanical flexibility. The present work reviews state-of the-art applications of polymers and composites in two-phase passive thermal management systems, with an analysis of their limitations and technical challenges. Coolants are widely used to dissipate grinding heat in conventional grinding. This process, however, is not satisfactory as coolants often lose efficacy in grinding due to film boiling and can result in adverse health and environment effects. The present paper put forward the concept of a rotating heat pipe grinding wheel, attempting to reduce or eliminate the coolant amount and realize green machining. The heat transfer performance of rotating heat pipe grinding wheel was studied by using volume of fluid method in ANSYS/FLUENT. The influence of the input heat flux, filling ratio and rotational speed were investigated by a simulation method. Results show that the appropriate heat flux range for the rotating heat pipe grinding wheel was from 2000 to 100,000 W/m2, the ideal filling ratio was 50% and the rise of the rotational speed turned out to weaken the heat transfer coefficient. Finally, dry grinding experiments on Ti-6Al-4V were performed and the temperatures in both the rotating heat pipe and the grinding contact zone were monitored. A novel and advanced analysis tool, based on the resolution of the inverse heat conduction problem, is used to evaluate wall-to-fluid heat fluxes in a metallic flat-plate pulsating heat pipe. The device under analysis is made of copper and formed by 16 channels having a squared section of 3 × 3 mm2 and filled with a water–ethanol mixture (20 wt.% of ethanol) with a volumetric filling ratio of 50%. One flat side of the device is externally coated with a highly emissive paint to perform temperature measurements by means of a medium-wave infrared camera. The acquired infrared maps are first processed by a three-dimensional Gaussian filter and then used as inputs for the inverse approach for the evaluation of heat fluxes locally exchanged between the fluid and the thin walls of each channel. The suggested procedure is successfully validated by means of synthetic data. The resulting space–time heat flux distributions are therefore statistically investigated in terms of amplitude and space–time variations, providing quantitative references for the identification of two-phase flow regimes. The performance of a CO2 double-pipe evaporator was studied through experiments and a simulation model that was established by the steady-state distribution parameter method and experimentally verified while using a CO2 transcritical water‒water heat pump system. The effects of different operating parameters on heat transfer performance were studied over a range of evaporation temperatures (−5 to 5 °C), mass velocity (100‒600 kg/m2s), and heat flux (5000‒15,000 W/m2). It was found that the dryout quality increased at a small evaporation temperature, a large mass velocity, and a small heat flux. The simulation yield means relative error (RE) of heat transfer for the evaporation temperature and that of the CO2 pressure drop for the chilled water inlet temperature were 5.21% and 3.78%, respectively. The effect of tube diameter on the performance of CO2 double-pipe evaporator is probed through simulations. At the same time, this paper defines a parameter α , which is the proportion of the pre-dryout region to the whole heat transfer region. A larger α value is desirable. Bone drilling is a common surgical operation, which often causes an increase in bone temperature. A temperature above 47 °C for 60 s is the critical temperature that can be allowed in bone drilling because of thermal bone osteonecrosis. Therefore, thermal management in bone drilling by a rotating heat pipe was proposed in this study. A new rotating heat pipe drill was designed, and its heat transfer mechanism and thermal management performance was investigated at occasions with different input heat flux and rotational speed. Results show that boiling and convection heat transfer occurred in the evaporator and film condensation appears in the condenser. The thermal resistance decreases with the increase of the rotational speed at the range from 1200 to 2000 rpm and it decreases as the input heat flux rises from 5000 to 10,000 W/m2 and increases at 20,000 W/m2. The temperature on the drill tip was found to be 46.9 °C with an input heat flux of 8000 W/m2 and a rotational speed of 2000 rpm. In order to enhance heat transfer in the abrasive-milling processes to reduce thermal damage, the concept of employing oscillating heat pipes (OHPs) in an abrasive-milling tool is proposed. A single-loop OHP (SLOHP) is positioned on the plane parallel to the rotational axis of the tool. In this case, centrifugal accelerations do not segregate the fluid between the evaporator and condenser. The experimental investigation is conducted to study the effects of centrifugal acceleration (0–738 m/s2), heat flux (9100–31,850 W/m2) and working fluids (methanol, acetone and water) on the thermal performance. Results show that the centrifugal acceleration has a positive influence on the thermal performance of the axial-rotating SLOHP when filled with acetone or methanol. As for water, with the increase of centrifugal acceleration, the heat transfer performance first increases and then decreases. The thermal performance enhances for higher heat flux rises for all the fluids. The flow inside the axial-rotating SLOHP is analyzed by a slow-motion visualization supported by the theoretical analysis. Based on the theoretical analysis, the rotation will increase the resistance for the vapor to penetrate through the liquid slugs to form an annular flow, which is verified by the visualization.
