The mathematical side of applied problems in multiple subject areas (biology, pattern recognition, etc.) is reduced to the problem of discrete optimization in the following mathematical method. We were provided a network and graphs in its leaves, for which we needed to find a rearrangement of graphs by non-leaf nodes, in which the given functional reached its minimum. Such a problem, even in the simplest case, is NP-hard, which means unavoidable restrictions on the network, on graphs, or on the functional. In this publication, this problem is addressed in the case of all graphs being so-called "structures", meaning directed-loaded graphs consisting of paths and cycles, and the functional as the sum (over all edges in the network) of distances between structures at the endpoints of every edge. The distance itself is equal to the minimal length of sequence from the fixed list of operations, the composition of which transforms the structure at one endpoint of the edge into the structure at its other endpoint. The list of operations (and their costs) on such a graph is fixed. Under these conditions, the given discrete optimization problem is called the reconstruction problem. This paper presents novel algorithms for solving the reconstruction problem, along with full proofs of their low error and low polynomial complexity. For example, for the network, the problem is solved with a zero error algorithm that has a linear polynomial computational complexity; and for the tree the problem is solved using an algorithm with a multiplicative error of at most two, which has a second order polynomial computational complexity. With the increasingly widespread application of UAV intelligence, the need for autonomous navigation and positioning is becoming more and more important. To solve the problem that UAV cannot perform localization in complex scenes, a new multi-source fusion framework factor graph optimization algorithm is used for UAV localization state estimation in this paper, which is based on IMU/GNSS/VO multi-source sensors. Based on the factor graph model and the iSAM incremental inference algorithm, a multi-source fusion model of IMU/GNSS/VO is established, including the IMU pre-integration factor, IMU bias factor, GNSS factor, and VO factor. Mathematical simulations and validations on the EuRoC dataset show that, when the selected sliding window size is 30, the factor graph optimization (FGO) algorithm can not only meet the requirements of real time and accuracy at the same time, but it also achieves a plug-and-play function in the event of local sensor failures. Finally, compared with the traditional federated Kalman algorithm and the adaptive federated Kalman algorithm, the positioning accuracy of the FGO algorithm in this paper is improved by 1.5–2-fold, and can effectively improve autonomous navigation system robustness and flexibility in complex scenarios. Unconstrained continuous large-scale global optimization (LSGO) is still a challenging task for a wide range of modern metaheuristic approaches. A cooperative coevolution approach is a good tool for increasing the performance of an evolutionary algorithm in solving high-dimensional optimization problems. However, the performance of cooperative coevolution approaches for LSGO depends significantly on the problem decomposition, namely, on the number of subcomponents and on how variables are grouped in these subcomponents. Also, the choice of the population size is still an open question for population-based algorithms. This paper discusses a method for selecting the number of subcomponents and the population size during the optimization process ("on fly") from a predefined pool of parameters. The selection of the parameters is based on their performance in the previous optimization steps. The main goal of the study is the improvement of coevolutionary decomposition-based algorithms for solving LSGO problems. In this paper, we propose a novel self-adapt evolutionary algorithm for solving continuous LSGO problems. We have tested this algorithm on 15 optimization problems from the IEEE LSGO CEC'2013 benchmark suite. Golden jackal optimization (GJO) is an effective metaheuristic algorithm that imitates the cooperative hunting behavior of the golden jackal. However, since the update of the prey's position often depends on the male golden jackal and there is insufficient diversity of golden jackals in some cases, it is prone to falling into a local optimal optimum. In order to address these drawbacks of GJO, this paper proposes an improved algorithm, called a hybrid GJO and golden sine (S) algorithm (Gold-SA) with dynamic lens-imaging (L) learning (LSGJO). First, this paper proposes novel dual golden spiral update rules inspired by Gold-SA. These rules give GJO the ability to think like a human (Gold-SA), making the golden jackal more intelligent in the process of preying, and improving the ability and efficiency of optimization. Second, a novel nonlinear dynamic decreasing scaling factor is introduced into the lens-imaging learning operator to maintain the population diversity. The performance of LSGJO is verified through 23 classical benchmark functions and 3 complex design problems in real scenarios. The experimental results show that LSGJO converges faster and more accurately than 11 state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, the global and local search ability has improved significantly, and the proposed algorithm has shown superior performance in solving constrained problems. Dynamic weapon target assignment (DWTA) is an effective method to solve the multi-stage battlefield fire optimization problem, which can reflect the actual combat scenario better than static weapon target assignment (SWTA). In this paper, a meaningful and effective DWTA model is established, which contains two practical and conflicting objectives, namely, maximizing combat benefits and minimizing weapon costs. Moreover, the model contains limited resource constraints, feasibility constraints and fire transfer constraints. The existence of multi-objective and multi-constraint makes DWTA more complicated. To solve this problem, an improved multiobjective particle swarm optimization algorithm (IMOPSO) is proposed in this paper. Various learning strategies are adopted for the dominated and non-dominated solutions of the algorithm, so that the algorithm can learn and evolve in a targeted manner. In order to solve the problem that the algorithm is easy to fall into local optimum, this paper proposes a search strategy based on simulated binary crossover (SBX) and polynomial mutation (PM), which enables elitist information to be shared among external archive and enhances the exploratory capabilities of IMOPSO. In addition, a dynamic archive maintenance strategy is applied to improve the diversity of non-dominated solutions. Finally, this algorithm is compared with three state-of-the-art multiobjective optimization algorithms, including solving benchmark functions and DWTA model in this article. Experimental results show that IMOPSO has better convergence and distribution than the other three multiobjective optimization algorithms. The variational quantum algorithm (VQA) is a hybrid classical–quantum algorithm. It can actually run in an intermediate-scale quantum device where the number of available qubits is too limited to perform quantum error correction, so it is one of the most promising quantum algorithms in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era. In this paper, two ideas for solving the learning with errors problem (LWE) using VQA are proposed. First, after reducing the LWE problem into the bounded distance decoding problem, the quantum approximation optimization algorithm (QAOA) is introduced to improve classical methods. Second, after the LWE problem is reduced into the unique shortest vector problem, the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is used to solve it, and the number of qubits required is calculated in detail. Cross-modal hashing technology is a key technology for real-time retrieval of large-scale multimedia data in real-world applications. Although the existing cross-modal hashing methods have achieved impressive accomplishment, there are still some limitations: (1) some cross-modal hashing methods do not make full consider the rich semantic information and noise information in labels, resulting in a large semantic gap, and (2) some cross-modal hashing methods adopt the relaxation-based or discrete cyclic coordinate descent algorithm to solve the discrete constraint problem, resulting in a large quantization error or time consumption. Therefore, in order to solve these limitations, in this paper, we propose a novel method, named Discrete Semantics-Guided Asymmetric Hashing (DSAH). Specifically, our proposed DSAH leverages both label information and similarity matrix to enhance the semantic information of the learned hash codes, and the ℓ 2 , 1 norm is used to increase the sparsity of matrix to solve the problem of the inevitable noise and subjective factors in labels. Meanwhile, an asymmetric hash learning scheme is proposed to efficiently perform hash learning. In addition, a discrete optimization algorithm is proposed to fast solve the hash code directly and discretely. During the optimization process, the hash code learning and the hash function learning interact, i.e., the learned hash codes can guide the learning process of the hash function and the hash function can also guide the hash code generation simultaneously. In recent years, new metaheuristic algorithms have been developed taking as reference the inspiration on biological and natural phenomena. This nature-inspired approach for algorithm development has been widely used by many researchers in solving optimization problems. These algorithms have been compared with the traditional ones and have demonstrated to be superior in many complex problems. This paper attempts to describe the algorithms based on nature, which are used in optimizing fuzzy clustering in real-world applications. Optimization problems in various fields of science and engineering should be solved using appropriate methods. Stochastic search-based optimization algorithms are a widely used approach for solving optimization problems. In this paper, a new optimization algorithm called "the good, the bad, and the ugly" optimizer (GBUO) is introduced, based on the effect of three members of the population on the population updates. In the proposed GBUO, the algorithm population moves towards the good member and avoids the bad member. In the proposed algorithm, a new member called ugly member is also introduced, which plays an essential role in updating the population. In a challenging move, the ugly member leads the population to situations contrary to society's movement. GBUO is mathematically modeled, and its equations are presented. GBUO is implemented on a set of twenty-three standard objective functions to evaluate the proposed optimizer's performance for solving optimization problems. The mentioned standard objective functions can be classified into three groups: unimodal, multimodal with high-dimension, and multimodal with fixed dimension functions. There was a further analysis carried-out for eight well-known optimization algorithms. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has a good performance in solving different optimization problems models and is superior to the mentioned optimization algorithms. This paper improves the accuracy of a mine robot's positioning and mapping for rapid rescue. Specifically, we improved the FastSLAM algorithm inspired by the lion swarm optimization method. Through the division of labor between different individuals in the lion swarm optimization algorithm, the optimized particle set distribution after importance sampling in the FastSLAM algorithm is realized. The particles are distributed in a high likelihood area, thereby solving the problem of particle weight degradation. Meanwhile, the diversity of particles is increased since the foraging methods between individuals in the lion swarm algorithm are different so that improving the accuracy of the robot's positioning and mapping. One of the biggest challenge in the field of deep learning is the parameter selection and optimization process. In recent years different algorithms have been proposed including bio-inspired solutions to solve this problem, however, there are many challenges including local minima, saddle points, and vanishing gradients. In this paper, we introduce the Whale Optimisation Algorithm (WOA) based on the swarm foraging behavior of humpback whales to optimise neural network hyperparameters. We wish to stress that to the best of our knowledge this is the first attempt that uses Whale Optimisation Algorithm for the optimisation task of hyperparameters. After a detailed description of the WOA algorithm we formulate and explain the application in deep learning, present the implementation, and compare the proposed algorithm with other well-known algorithms including widely used Grid and Random Search methods. Additionally, we have implemented a third dimension feature analysis to the original WOA algorithm to utilize 3D search space (3D-WOA). Simulations show that the proposed algorithm can be successfully used for hyperparameters optimization, achieving accuracy of 89.85% and 80.60% for Fashion MNIST and Reuters datasets, respectively. UAV trajectory planning is one of the research focuses in artificial intelligence and UAV technology. The asymmetric information, however, will lead to the uncertainty of the UAV trajectory planning; the probability theory as the most commonly used method to solve the trajectory planning problem in uncertain environment will lead to unrealistic conclusions under the condition of lacking samples, while the uncertainty theory based on uncertain measures is an efficient method to solve such problems. Firstly, the uncertainties in trajectory planning are sufficiently considered in this paper; the fuel consumption, concealment and threat degree with uncertain variables are taken as the objective functions; the constraints are analyzed according to the maneuverability; and the uncertain multi-objective trajectory planning (UMOTP) model is established. After that, this paper takes both the long-term benefits and its stability into account, and then, the expected-value and standard-deviation efficient trajectory model is established. What is more, this paper solves the Pareto front of the trajectory planning, satisfying various preferences, which avoids the defects of the trajectory obtained by traditional model only applicable to a certain specific situation. In order to obtain a better solution set, this paper proposes an improved backbones particle swarm optimization algorithm based on PSO and NSGA-II, which overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional algorithm such as premature convergence and poor robustness, and the efficiency of the algorithm is tested. This paper features the study of global optimization problems and numerical methods of their solution. Such problems are computationally expensive since the objective function can be multi-extremal, nondifferentiable, and, as a rule, given in the form of a "black box". This study used a deterministic algorithm for finding the global extremum. This algorithm is based neither on the concept of multistart, nor nature-inspired algorithms. The article provides computational rules of the one-dimensional algorithm and the nested optimization scheme which could be applied for solving multidimensional problems. Please note that the solution complexity of global optimization problems essentially depends on the presence of multiple local extrema. In this paper, we apply machine learning methods to identify regions of attraction of local minima. The use of local optimization algorithms in the selected regions can significantly accelerate the convergence of global search as it could reduce the number of search trials in the vicinity of local minima. The results of computational experiments carried out on several hundred global optimization problems of different dimensionalities presented in the paper confirm the effect of accelerated convergence (in terms of the number of search trials required to solve a problem with a given accuracy). Nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms remain a strong trend in optimization. Human-inspired optimization algorithms should be more intuitive and relatable. This paper proposes a novel optimization algorithm inspired by a human search party. We hypothesize the behavioral model of a search party searching for a treasure. Motivated by the search party's behavior, we abstract the "Divide, Conquer, Assemble" (DCA) approach. The DCA approach allows us to parallelize the traditional gradient descent algorithm in a strikingly simple manner. Essentially, multiple gradient descent instances with different learning rates are run parallelly, periodically sharing information. We call it the search party gradient descent (SPGD) algorithm. Experiments performed on a diverse set of classical benchmark functions show that our algorithm is good at optimizing. We believe our algorithm's apparent lack of complexity will equip researchers to solve problems efficiently. The optimal power flow (OPF) is a vital tool for optimizing the control parameters of a power system by considering the desired objective functions subject to system constraints. Metaheuristic algorithms have been proven to be well-suited for solving complex optimization problems. The whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is one of the well-regarded metaheuristics that is widely used to solve different optimization problems. Despite the use of WOA in different fields of application as OPF, its effectiveness is decreased as the dimension size of the test system is increased. Therefore, in this paper, an effective whale optimization algorithm for solving optimal power flow problems (EWOA-OPF) is proposed. The main goal of this enhancement is to improve the exploration ability and maintain a proper balance between the exploration and exploitation of the canonical WOA. In the proposed algorithm, the movement strategy of whales is enhanced by introducing two new movement strategies: (1) encircling the prey using Levy motion and (2) searching for prey using Brownian motion that cooperate with canonical bubble-net attacking. To validate the proposed EWOA-OPF algorithm, a comparison among six well-known optimization algorithms is established to solve the OPF problem. All algorithms are used to optimize single- and multi-objective functions of the OPF under the system constraints. Standard IEEE 6-bus, IEEE 14-bus, IEEE 30-bus, and IEEE 118-bus test systems are used to evaluate the proposed EWOA-OPF and comparative algorithms for solving the OPF problem in diverse power system scale sizes. Numerous optimization problems have been defined in different disciplines of science that must be optimized using effective techniques. Optimization algorithms are an effective and widely used method of solving optimization problems that are able to provide suitable solutions for optimization problems. In this paper, a new nature-based optimization algorithm called Snow Leopard Optimization Algorithm (SLOA) is designed that mimics the natural behaviors of snow leopards. SLOA is simulated in four phases including travel routes, hunting, reproduction, and mortality. The different phases of the proposed algorithm are described and then the mathematical modeling of the SLOA is presented in order to implement it on different optimization problems. A standard set of objective functions, including twenty-three functions, is used to evaluate the ability of the proposed algorithm to optimize and provide appropriate solutions for optimization problems. Also, the optimization results obtained from the proposed SLOA are compared with eight other well-known optimization algorithms. The optimization results show that the proposed SLOA has a high ability to solve various optimization problems. Also, the analysis and comparison of the optimization results obtained from the SLOA with the other eight algorithms shows that the SLOA is able to provide more appropriate quasi-optimal solutions and closer to the global optimal, and with better performance, it is much more competitive than similar algorithms. Energy saving is an important issue for multiple-chiller systems. Optimal chiller loading (OCL) in multiple-chiller systems has been investigated with many optimization algorithms to save energy. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm has been successful in solving this problem in some cases, but not in all. This study innovatively added a team evolution to the original particle swarm optimization algorithm, called team particle swarm optimization (TPSO). The TPSO enhances the effectiveness of original particle swarm optimization to better solve the OCL problem. The TPSO algorithm is composed of two evolutions: particle evolution and team evolution. The partial load ratio (PLR) of each operating chiller and the on-off state of each chiller are the particle evolution parameters and team evolution parameters, respectively. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, this paper adopts three case studies so the results generated from the proposed algorithm TPSO, the original particle swarm optimization (PSO) and other recently published algorithms can be compared. In these three case studies, the optimal results generated by using TPSO algorithm are the same as those by other compared algorithms. In case 1 under 5717 RT and 5334 RT cooling load, the results generated using the TPSO are lower than those by the original PSO in the amounts of 63.35 and 79.33 kW, respectively. The results indicated that the TPSO algorithm not only enabled the optimal solution in minimizing energy consumption, but also demonstrated the best stability when compared to other algorithms. The decomposition-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA/D) has shown remarkable effectiveness in solving multi-objective problems (MOPs). In this paper, we integrate the quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization (QPSO) algorithm with the MOEA/D framework in order to make the QPSO be able to solve MOPs effectively, with the advantage of the QPSO being fully used. We also employ a diversity controlling mechanism to avoid the premature convergence especially at the later stage of the search process, and thus further improve the performance of our proposed algorithm. In addition, we introduce a number of nondominated solutions to generate the global best for guiding other particles in the swarm. Experiments are conducted to compare the proposed algorithm, DMO-QPSO, with four multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithms and one multi-objective evolutionary algorithm on 15 test functions, including both bi-objective and tri-objective problems. The results show that the performance of the proposed DMO-QPSO is better than other five algorithms in solving most of these test problems. Moreover, we further study the impact of two different decomposition approaches, i.e., the penalty-based boundary intersection (PBI) and Tchebycheff (TCH) approaches, as well as the polynomial mutation operator on the algorithmic performance of DMO-QPSO. This paper proposes a hybrid whale optimization algorithm (WOA) that is derived from the genetic and thermal exchange optimization-based whale optimization algorithm (GWOA-TEO) to enhance global optimization capability. First, the high-quality initial population is generated to improve the performance of GWOA-TEO. Then, thermal exchange optimization (TEO) is applied to improve exploitation performance. Next, a memory is considered that can store historical best-so-far solutions, achieving higher performance without adding additional computational costs. Finally, a crossover operator based on the memory and a position update mechanism of the leading solution based on the memory are proposed to improve the exploration performance. The GWOA-TEO algorithm is then compared with five state-of-the-art optimization algorithms on CEC 2017 benchmark test functions and 8 UCI repository datasets. The statistical results of the CEC 2017 benchmark test functions show that the GWOA-TEO algorithm has good accuracy for global optimization. The classification results of 8 UCI repository datasets also show that the GWOA-TEO algorithm has competitive results with regard to comparison algorithms in recognition rate. In recent years, metaheuristic algorithms have been widely used in solving clustering problems because of their good performance and application effects. Krill herd algorithm (KHA) is a new effective algorithm to solve optimization problems based on the imitation of krill individual behavior, and it is proven to perform better than other swarm intelligence algorithms. However, there are some weaknesses yet. In this paper, an improved krill herd algorithm (IKHA) is studied. Modified mutation operators and updated mechanisms are applied to improve global optimization, and the proposed IKHA can overcome the weakness of KHA and performs better than KHA in optimization problems. Then, KHA and IKHA are introduced into the clustering problem. In our proposed clustering algorithm, KHA and IKHA are used to find appropriate cluster centers. Reformulating the history matching problem from a least-square mathematical optimization problem into a Markov Decision Process introduces a method in which reinforcement learning can be utilized to solve the problem. This method provides a mechanism where an artificial deep neural network agent can interact with the reservoir simulator and find multiple different solutions to the problem. Such a formulation allows for solving the problem in parallel by launching multiple concurrent environments enabling the agent to learn simultaneously from all the environments at once, achieving significant speed up. When solving complex constrained problems, how to efficiently utilize promising infeasible solutions is an essential issue because these promising infeasible solutions can significantly improve the diversity of algorithms. However, most existing constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (CMOEAs) do not fully exploit these promising infeasible solutions. In order to solve this problem, a constrained multi-objective optimization evolutionary algorithm based on the dynamic constraint boundary method is proposed (CDCBM). The proposed algorithm continuously searches for promising infeasible solutions between UPF (the unconstrained Pareto front) and CPF (the constrained Pareto front) during the evolution process by the dynamically changing auxiliary population of the constraint boundary, which continuously provides supplementary evolutionary directions to the main population and improves the convergence and diversity of the main population. Extensive experiments on three well-known test suites and three real-world constrained multi-objective optimization problems demonstrate that CDCBM is more competitive than seven state-of-the-art CMOEAs. Several population-based metaheuristic optimization algorithms have been proposed in the last decades, none of which are able either to outperform all existing algorithms or to solve all optimization problems according to the No Free Lunch (NFL) theorem. Many of these algorithms behave effectively, under a correct setting of the control parameter(s), when solving different engineering problems. The optimization behavior of these algorithms is boosted by applying various strategies, which include the hybridization technique and the use of chaotic maps instead of the pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs). The hybrid algorithms are suitable for a large number of engineering applications in which they behave more effectively than the thoroughbred optimization algorithms. However, they increase the difficulty of correctly setting control parameters, and sometimes they are designed to solve particular problems. This paper presents three hybridizations dubbed HYBPOP, HYBSUBPOP, and HYBIND of up to seven algorithms free of control parameters. Each hybrid proposal uses a different strategy to switch the algorithm charged with generating each new individual. These algorithms are Jaya, sine cosine algorithm (SCA), Rao's algorithms, teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO), and chaotic Jaya. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithms perform better than the original algorithms, which implies the optimal use of these algorithms according to the problem to be solved. Differential evolution (DE) is a very effective stochastic optimization algorithm based on population for solving various real-world problems. The quality of solutions to these problems is mainly determined by the combination of mutation strategies and their parameters in DE. However, in the process of solving these problems, the population diversity and local search ability will gradually deteriorate. Therefore, we propose a multi-population differential evolution (MUDE) algorithm with a uniform local search to balance exploitation and exploration. With MUDE, the population is divided into multiple subpopulations with different population sizes, which perform different mutation strategies according to the evolution ratio, i.e., DE/rand/1, DE/current-to-rand/1, and DE/current-to-pbest/1. To improve the diversity of the population, the information is migrated between subpopulations by the soft-island model. Furthermore, the local search ability is improved by way of the uniform local search. As a result, the proposed MUDE maintains exploitation and exploration capabilities throughout the process. The real-time guidance algorithm is the key technology of the powered landing. Given the lack of real-time performance of the convex optimization algorithm with free final time, a lossless convex optimization (LCvx) algorithm based on the deep neural network (DNN) predictor is proposed. Firstly, the DNN predictor is built to map the optimal final time. Then, the LCvx algorithm is used to solve the problem of fuel-optimal powered landing with the given final time. The optimality and real-time performance of the proposed algorithm are verified by numerical examples. Finally, a closed-loop simulation framework is constructed, and the accuracy of landing under various disturbances is verified. The proposed method does not need complex iterative operations compared with the traditional algorithm with free final time. In this paper, a new hybrid algorithm based on two meta-heuristic algorithms is presented to improve the optimization capability of original algorithms. This hybrid algorithm is realized by the deep ensemble of two new proposed meta-heuristic methods, i.e., slime mold algorithm (SMA) and arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA), called DESMAOA. To be specific, a preliminary hybrid method was applied to obtain the improved SMA, called SMAOA. Then, two strategies that were extracted from the SMA and AOA, respectively, were embedded into SMAOA to boost the optimizing speed and accuracy of the solution. The optimization performance of the proposed DESMAOA was analyzed by using 23 classical benchmark functions. Firstly, the impacts of different components are discussed. Then, the exploitation and exploration capabilities, convergence behaviors, and performances are evaluated in detail. Cases at different dimensions also were investigated. Compared with the SMA, AOA, and another five well-known optimization algorithms, the results showed that the proposed method can outperform other optimization algorithms with high superiority. Finally, three classical engineering design problems were employed to illustrate the capability of the proposed algorithm for solving the practical problems. Engineering data are often highly nonlinear and contain high-frequency noise, so the Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm may not converge when a neural network optimized by the algorithm is trained with engineering data. In this work, we analyzed the reasons for the LM neural network's poor convergence commonly associated with the LM algorithm. Specifically, the effects of different activation functions such as Sigmoid, Tanh, Rectified Linear Unit (RELU) and Parametric Rectified Linear Unit (PRLU) were evaluated on the general performance of LM neural networks, and special values of LM neural network parameters were found that could make the LM algorithm converge poorly. We proposed an adaptive LM (AdaLM) algorithm to solve the problem of the LM algorithm. The algorithm coordinates the descent direction and the descent step by the iteration number, which can prevent falling into the local minimum value and avoid the influence of the parameter state of LM neural networks. We compared the AdaLM algorithm with the traditional LM algorithm and its variants in terms of accuracy and speed in the context of testing common datasets and aero-engine data, and the results verified the effectiveness of the AdaLM algorithm. With the advancement of science and technology, new complex optimization problems have emerged, and the achievement of optimal solutions has become increasingly important. Many of these problems have features and difficulties such as non-convex, nonlinear, discrete search space, and a non-differentiable objective function. Achieving the optimal solution to such problems has become a major challenge. To address this challenge and provide a solution to deal with the complexities and difficulties of optimization applications, a new stochastic-based optimization algorithm is proposed in this study. Optimization algorithms are a type of stochastic approach for addressing optimization issues that use random scanning of the search space to produce quasi-optimal answers. The Selecting Some Variables to Update-Based Algorithm (SSVUBA) is a new optimization algorithm developed in this study to handle optimization issues in various fields. The suggested algorithm's key principles are to make better use of the information provided by different members of the population and to adjust the number of variables used to update the algorithm population during the iterations of the algorithm. The theory of the proposed SSVUBA is described, and then its mathematical model is offered for use in solving optimization issues. Fifty-three objective functions, including unimodal, multimodal, and CEC 2017 test functions, are utilized to assess the ability and usefulness of the proposed SSVUBA in addressing optimization issues. SSVUBA's performance in optimizing real-world applications is evaluated on four engineering design issues. Furthermore, the performance of SSVUBA in optimization was compared to the performance of eight well-known algorithms to further evaluate its quality. The simulation results reveal that the proposed SSVUBA has a significant ability to handle various optimization issues and that it outperforms other competitor algorithms by giving appropriate quasi-optimal solutions that are closer to the global optima. The particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm has been widely used in hull form optimisation owing to its feasibility and fast convergence. However, similar to other intelligent algorithms, PSO also has the disadvantages of local premature convergence and low convergence performance. Moreover, optimization data are not used to analyse and reduce the range of values for relevant design variables. Our study aimed to solve these existing problems in the PSO algorithm and improve PSO from four aspects, namely data processing of particle swarm population initialisation, data processing of iterative optimisation, particle velocity adjustment, and particle cross-boundary configuration, in combination with space reduction technology. The improved PSO algorithm was used to optimise the hull form of an engineering vessel at Fn = 0.24 to reduce the wave-making resistance coefficient under static constraints. The results showed that the improved PSO algorithm could effectively improve the optimisation efficiency and reliability of PSO and effectively overcome the drawbacks of the PSO algorithm.
