The accurate estimation of the state of charge (SOC) of lithium-ion batteries is critical in battery energy storage systems. This paper introduces a novel approach, the AdaBoost–BPNN model, to overcome the limitations of traditional data-driven estimation methods, such as a low estimation accuracy and poor generalization ability. The proposed model employs a back propagation neural network (BPNN) for the preliminary estimation. Subsequently, an AdaBoost–BPNN model is developed as a strong learner using the AdaBoost integration algorithm. Each BPNN sub-model serves as a weak learner within the AdaBoost framework. The final output of the strong learner is obtained by combining the individual outputs from the weak learners using weighting factors. This adaptive adjustment of weighting factors enhances the accuracy of SOC estimation. The proposed SOC estimation algorithm is evaluated and validated through experimental analysis. Throughout the paper, theoretical analysis is conducted, and the proposed AdaBoost–BPNN model is validated and verified using experimental results. The results demonstrate that the AdaBoost–BPNN model outperforms traditional methods in accurately estimating SOC under various conditions, including constant current-constant voltage (CCCV) charging, dynamical stress testing (DST), US06, a federal urban driving schedule (FUDS), and pulse discharge conditions. This study describes a laboratory model of a battery energy storage system (BESS) designed for testing algorithms aimed at reducing peak power consumption in railway traction substations. The system comprises a DC/DC converter and battery energy storage. This article details a laboratory model of a bidirectional buck-boost DC/DC converter, which is used to transfer energy between the battery energy storage and a DC line. It presents an analysis of DC/DC converter systems along with simulation studies. Furthermore, the results of laboratory tests on the DC/DC converter model are also provided. The control algorithm of the system in the traction substation is focused on reducing peak power, offering benefits such as lower charges for the railway operator due to the possibility of reducing contracted power requirements. From the perspective of the power grid, the reduction in power fluctuations and, consequently, voltage sags, is advantageous. This paper includes a description of a hardware simulator for verifying the system's control algorithms. The verification of the control algorithms was performed through experimental tests conducted on a laboratory model (a hardware simulator) of the system for dynamic load reduction in traction substations, on a power scale of 1:1000 (5.5 kW). In this paper, the Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA) is applied as a recent metaheuristic optimization algorithm to reduce energy losses and capture the size of incorporating a battery energy storage system (BESS) and photovoltaics (PV) within a distribution system. AOA is designed with revelation from Archimedes' principle, an impressive physics law. AOA mimics the attitude of buoyant force applied upward on an object, partially or entirely dipped in liquid, which is relative to the weight of the dislodged liquid. Furthermore, the developed algorithm is evolved for sizing several PVs and BESSs considering the changing demand over time and the probability generation. The studied IEEE 69-bus distribution network system has different types of the load, such as residential, industrial, and commercial loads. The simulation results indicate the robustness of the proposed algorithm for computing the best size of multiple PVs and BESSs with a significant reduction in the power system losses. Additionally, the AOA algorithm has an efficient balancing between the exploration and exploitation phases to avoid the local solutions and go to the best global solutions, compared with other studied algorithms. The advancement in battery manufacturing has played a significant role in the use of batteries as a cost-effective energy storage system. This paper proposes an optimal charging and discharging strategy for the battery energy storage system deployed for economic dispatch and supply/demand balancing services in the presence of intermittent renewables such as solar photovoltaic systems. A decision-making strategy for battery charge/discharge operations in a discrete-time rolling horizon framework is developed as a finite-input set non-linear model predictive control instances and a dynamic programming procedure is proposed for its real-time implementation. The proposed scheme is tested on controllable loads and a photovoltaic generation scenario in the premises of a sports centre, as a part of a pilot demonstration of the inteGRIDy EU-funded project. The test results confirm that the implemented stacking of the battery and optimal decision-making algorithm can enhance net saving in the electricity bill of the sports centre, and lead to corresponding CO2 reductions. It is normally accepted that Battery Energy Storage Systems improve frequency regulation by providing fast response to the Automatic Generation Control. However, currently available control strategies may lead to early Energy Storage Systems aging given that Automatic Generation Control requirements are increasing due to zero carbon power generation integration. In this sense, it is important to analyze the aging phenomena in order to assess the technical–economical usefulness of Battery Energy Storage Systems towards zero carbon power systems. In order to avoid early aging, various proposals on aging-reducing algorithms can be found; however, it is unclear if those aging-reducing algorithms affect the performance of Battery Energy Storage Systems. It is also unclear whether those effects must be internalized to properly dimension the capacity of Battery Energy Storage Systems to both comply with performance standards and to prevent early aging. Thus, this paper estimates the storage capacity of a Battery Energy Storage Systems to comply with Automatic Generation Control performance standard under aging-reducing operating algorithms by dynamics simulations of a reduced-order, empirically-validated model of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. The results show the relationship between the required performance of Automatic Generation Control and Battery Energy Storage System capacity, considering a 1-year simulation of Automatic Generation Control dynamics. It can be concluded that the compliance with performance standards is strongly related to the storage capacity, regardless of how fast the device can inject or withdraw power from the grid. This research work implements an initial methodology for the assessment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) based on Remaining Useful Lifetime (RUL), and its main contribution is the modeling and estimation of Health and Charge indicators through regression algorithms and binary classifiers during the battery's operation. Linear Regression, Ridge Regression, and Lasso Regression are the main algorithms for modeling the State of Health (SOH), while Decision Tree, Naïve Bayes, and Logistic Regression are implemented as binary classifiers to estimate the charge and discharge during battery operation. Additional data science techniques are executed to provide feature selection, validation, and metrics of performance. The results show that binary classifiers achieve a remarkable accuracy, around 95% for charge and discharge predictions, which is supported by experimental battery measurements. Similarly, regression algorithms achieve accuracy results around 97% and provide a basis for determining the Remaining Useful Lifetime (RUL) according to the End-of-Life (EOL) criteria of a BESS. The optimal allocation and sizing of distributed generation (DG) resources are important in installing these resources, to improve the technical parameters of the network, including the power losses, voltage profile, and short-circuit level, as well as to increase economic factors. In this paper, a new multi-criteria algorithm and objective function are proposed for the optimal sizing and allocation of renewable and non-renewable DG resources simultaneously. The proposed algorithm is implemented on 63/20 kV substations at 20 kV levels. In the proposed objective function, all important technical and economic factors as well as important constraints, such as penetration level of DGs and budget constraint, are considered in a way that all factors are assigned to monetary values. Moreover, a new mathematical formulation is introduced for the allocation of renewable DG resources to reduce run-time optimization. The genetic algorithm (GA) is employed in the proposed algorithm to minimize the objective function. For renewable DG resources, photovoltaic panels and wind turbines, and for non-renewable DG resources, gas turbines are considered. The 115 buses network of Bakhtar Regional Electric Company (BREC) in Iran is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The High Concentrator Photovoltaic (HCPV) technology, due to its high efficiency, is considered one of the most promising solutions for the exploitation of sun-irradiation-based Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Nevertheless, the HCPV production is strictly connected to the Direct Normal Irradiation (DNI) making this photovoltaic technology more sensible to cloudiness than traditional ones. In order to mitigate the power intermittence and improve production programmability, the integration between Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) and HCPV, resorting to forecasting algorithms, has been investigated. Specifically, a local weather forecasting algorithm has been used for estimating the daily time evolution of DNI, air Temperature (T), Wind Speed (WS), and Air Mass (AM). These data are subsequently processed by means of an accurate HCPV model for the estimation of one day-ahead daily power production profile. The processing of HCPV forecasted generation by means of a properly tuned filter-based algorithm allows one day-ahead the definition of power profiles of ESS and power plant respectively, considering also the ESS constraints and the characteristic of the implemented real-time control algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed forecasting model and control algorithm is verified through a simulation study referring to the solar power plant constituted by HCPV and ESS installed in Ottana, Italy. The results highlight that the application of the proposed approach lessens the power fluctuation effect caused by HCPV generation preserving the batteries at the same time. Renewable energy needs are steadily on the rise. Bidirectional DC/DC converters are essential in charging and discharging various storage batteries, such as PV/ESS (photovoltaic/energy storage system). A dual active bridge (DAB) converter, in particular, transfers power in both directions by phase shift using a soiled state transformer (SST). To reduce switching inrush current in batteries under high voltages, a soft start-up is demonstrated during the initial switching operation. When a supercapacitor (SC) is used as a battery, the reverse power caused by the inrush current appears under high voltage at the DC-link side. This causes serious electrical damage to the PV/ESS' boost converter and inverter. To suppress peak overshoot voltage and stabilize soft start-up transients, we propose a three-step soft start-up controller and algorithm for bidirectional DAB converter implementation at virtual ESS and UPS. The step-by-step control strategy by OLDC (open loop duty control), OLPSC (open loop phase shift control), and OLFC (open loop frequency control) provides a stable soft start-up operation. In the initial stage of the OLDC, the duty ratio is gradually increased by the PWM (Pulse width modulation) signal. In the middle stage, a phase difference is seen as per the voltage of the SC. The OLPSC is performed to reduce the phase difference. In the final stage, the OLFC is performed to smoothly control the small phase difference. The overshoot or inrush current is drastically suppressed toward the DC-link and SC module. Consequently, we demonstrate a proposed controller and algorithm with prototype 5 kW DAB converter.
