Forecasting has extreme importance in industry due to the numerous competitive advantages that it provides, allowing to foresee what might happen and adjust management decisions accordingly. Industries increasingly use sensors, which allow for large-scale data collection. Big datasets enable training, testing and application of complex predictive algorithms based on machine learning models. The present paper focuses on predicting values from sensors installed on a pulp paper press, using data collected over three years. The variables analyzed are electric current, pressure, temperature, torque, oil level and velocity. The results of XGBoost and artificial neural networks, with different feature vectors, are compared. Softness is one of the essential properties of hygiene tissue products. Reliably measuring it is of utmost importance to ensure the balance between customer expectations and cost-effective tissue production. This study presents a method for assessing softness by analyzing acoustic emissions produced while tearing a tissue specimen. The aim was to train neural network models using the corrected results of human panel tests as the ground truth labels and to predict the tissue softness in two- and three-class recognition tasks. We also investigate the possibility of predicting some production parameters related to the softness property. Aiming at the imbalance of industrial control system data and the poor detection effect of industrial control intrusion detection systems on network attack traffic problems, we propose an ETM-TBD model based on hybrid machine learning and neural network models. Aiming at the problem of high dimensionality and imbalance in the amount of sample data in the massive data of industrial control systems, this paper proposes an IG-based feature selection method and an oversampling method for SMOTE. In the ETM-TBD model, we propose a hyperparameter optimization method based on Bayesian optimization used to optimize the parameters of the four basic machine learners in the model. By introducing a multi-head-attention mechanism, the Transformer module increases the attention between local features and global features, enabling the discovery of the internal relationship between features. Additionally, the BiGRU is used to preserve the temporal features of the dataset, while the DNN is used to extract deeper features. Finally, the SoftMax classifier is used to classify the output. By analyzing the results of the comparison and ablation experiments, it can be concluded that the F1-score of the ETM-TBD model on a robotic arm dataset is 0.9665 and the model has very low FNR and FPR scores of 0.0263 and 0.0081, respectively. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly growing network that shares information over the Internet via interconnected devices. In addition, this network has led to new security challenges in recent years. One of the biggest challenges is the impact of denial-of-service (DoS) attacks on the IoT. The Information-Centric Network (ICN) infrastructure is a critical component of the IoT. The ICN has gained recognition as a promising networking solution for the IoT by supporting IoT devices to be able to communicate and exchange data with each other over the Internet. Moreover, the ICN provides easy access and straightforward security to IoT content. However, the integration of IoT devices into the ICN introduces new security challenges, particularly in the form of DoS attacks. These attacks aim to disrupt or disable the normal operation of the ICN, potentially leading to severe consequences for IoT applications. Machine learning (ML) is a powerful technology. This paper proposes a new approach for developing a robust and efficient solution for detecting DoS attacks in ICN-IoT networks using ML technology. ML is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on the development of algorithms. While several ML algorithms have been explored in the literature, including neural networks, decision trees (DTs), clustering algorithms, XGBoost, J48, multilayer perceptron (MLP) with backpropagation (BP), deep neural networks (DNNs), MLP-BP, RBF-PSO, RBF-JAYA, and RBF-TLBO, researchers compare these detection approaches using classification metrics such as accuracy. This classification metric indicates that SVM, RF, and KNN demonstrate superior performance compared to other alternatives. The proposed approach was carried out on the NDN architecture because, based on our findings, it is the most used one and has a high percentage of various types of cyberattacks. Industrial archived process data represent a convenient source of information for data-driven models, such as artificial neural network (ANN), that can be used for safety and efficiency improvement like early or even predictive fault detection and diagnosis (FDD). Nonetheless, most of the data used for model generation are representative of the process nominal states and therefore are not enough for classification problems intended to determine abnormal process conditions. This work proposes the use of techniques to augment the original real data standards, dismissing the need for experiments that could jeopardize process safety. It uses the Monte Carlo technique to artificially increase the number of model inputs coupled to the nearest neighbor search (NNS) by geometric distances to consistently classify the generated patterns in normal or faulty statuses. Finally, a radial basis function neural network is trained with the augmented data. The methodology was validated by a study case in which 3381 pulp and paper industrial data points were expanded to monitor the formation of particles in a recovery boiler. Only 5.8% of the original process data were examples of faulty conditions, but the new expanded and balanced data collection leveraged the classification performance of the neural network, allowing its future use for monitoring purpose. Active distribution grids that contain energy sources (so-called distributed generation or DG) are nowadays a reality. Besides the many benefits DGs bring to the distribution grid, some challenges are associated with their integration. Since there are DGs now in the distribution grid, the occurrence of islanding operation is possible. Since an islanding operation can be dangerous, it is necessary to have an effective method to detect it. In the last decade, scientists have made a great effort to develop and test various islanding detection methods (IDMs). Many approaches have been tested, and the methods based on computational intelligence (CI) have shown great potential. Among them, artificial neural networks (ANNs) gained most of the research attention. This paper focuses on ANN application for islanding detection. It gives an exhaustive review of the ANN types used for islanding detection, the types of input data, and their transformation to fit the ANNs. Furthermore, various applications based on specific input data, preprocessing types, different learning algorithms, real-time implementation, and various distribution models used for ANN are reviewed. A dual-band UWB coplanar waveguide monopole antenna is presented in this paper. The antenna proposed in this paper consists of an FR4 substrate, two ground planes, and a rectangular patch. The size of the antenna proposed is 24 x 25 x 1 mm³ with a slit of length and width of 5.7 and 0.5 mm, respectively. We received two operating bands, a C- and Ku-band, with both Bi and Omni-directional radiation patterns. The bandwidth values of the first (3.65-7.49) GHz and second (11.5-13.4) GHz band of the proposed antenna are 3.9 GHz and 1.7 GHz, respectively. The proposed antenna operating at a frequency 5.8 GHz has a maximum bandwidth of 4.5 GHz and minimum bandwidth of 1.6 GHz. The characteristics of this antenna show that the antenna proposed in this paper is suitable for dual-band and UWB communication systems. We achieved a wide bandwidth by improving the ground plane. In recent years, the increasing popularity of smart mobile devices has made the interaction between devices and users, particularly through voice interaction, more crucial. By enabling smart devices to better understand users' emotional states through voice data, it becomes possible to provide more personalized services. This paper proposes a novel machine learning model for speech emotion recognition called CLDNN, which combines convolutional neural networks (CNN), long short-term memory neural networks (LSTM), and deep neural networks (DNN). To design a system that closely resembles the human auditory system in recognizing audio signals, this article uses the Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) of audio data as the input of the machine learning model. First, the MFCCs of the voice signal are extracted as the input of the model. Local feature learning blocks (LFLBs) composed of one-dimensional CNNs are employed to calculate the feature values of the data. As audio signals are time-series data, the resulting feature values from LFLBs are then fed into the LSTM layer to enhance learning on the time-series level. Finally, fully connected layers are used for classification and prediction. The experimental evaluation of the proposed model utilizes three databases: RAVDESS, EMO-DB, and IEMOCAP. The results demonstrate that the LSTM model effectively models the features extracted from the 1D CNN due to the time-series characteristics of speech signals. Additionally, the data augmentation method applied in this paper proves beneficial in improving the recognition accuracy and stability of the systems for different databases. With the development of smart grids and new power systems, the combination of non-intrusive load identification technology and smart home technology can provide users with the operating conditions of home appliances and equipment, thus reducing home energy loss and improving users' ability to demand a response. This paper proposes a non-intrusive load decomposition model with a parallel multiscale attention mechanism (PMAM). The model can extract both local and global feature information and fuse it through a parallel multiscale network. This improves the attention mechanism's ability to capture feature information over long time periods. To validate the model's decomposition ability, we combined the PMAM model with four benchmark models: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network model, the Time Pooling-based Load Disaggregation Model (TPNILM), the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and the Load Disaggregation Model without Parallel Multi-scalar Attention Mechanisms (UNPMAM). The model was trained on the publicly available UK-DALE dataset and tested. The models' test results were quantitatively evaluated using a confusion matrix. This involved calculating the F1 score of the load decomposition. A higher F1 score indicates better model decomposition performance. The results indicate that the PMAM model proposed in this paper maintains an F1 score above 0.9 for the decomposition of three types of electrical equipment under the same household user, which is 3% higher than that of the other benchmark models on average. In the cross-household test, the PMAM also demonstrated a better decomposition ability, with the F1 score maintained above 0.85, and the mean absolute error (MAE) decreased by 5.3% on average compared with that of the UNPMAM. In this paper, the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) is proposed to approximate the option price sensitivities of Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) Top 40 European call options in a classical and a modern multi-curve framework. The ANNs were trained on artificially generated option price data given the illiquid nature of the South African market, and the out-of-sample performance of the optimized ANNs was evaluated using an implied volatility surface constructed from published volatility skews. The results from this paper show that ANNs trained on artificially generated input data are able to accurately approximate the explicit solutions to the respective option price sensitivities of both a classical and a modern multi-curve framework in a real-world out-of-sample application to the South African market. The digitization of distribution power systems has revolutionized the way data are collected and analyzed. In this paper, the critical task of harnessing this information to identify irregularities and anomalies in electricity consumption is tackled. The focus is on detecting non-technical losses (NTLs) and energy theft within distribution networks. A comprehensive overview of the methodologies employed to uncover NTLs and energy theft is presented, leveraging measurements of electricity consumption. The most common scenarios and prevalent cases of anomalies and theft among consumers are identified. Additionally, statistical indicators tailored to specific anomalies are proposed. In this research paper, the practical implementation of numerous artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, including the artificial neural network (ANN), ANFIS, autoencoder neural network, and K-mean clustering, is highlighted. These algorithms play a central role in our research, and our primary objective is to showcase their effectiveness in identifying NTLs. Real-world data sourced directly from distribution networks are utilized. Additionally, we carefully assess how well statistical methods work and compare them to AI techniques by testing them with real data. The artificial neural network (ANN) accurately identifies various consumer types, exhibiting a frequency error of 7.62%. In contrast, the K-means algorithm shows a slightly higher frequency error of 9.26%, while the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) fails to detect the initial anomaly type, resulting in a frequency error of 11.11%. Our research suggests that AI can make finding irregularities in electricity consumption even more effective. In this paper, we propose a learning model for tracking the isolines of fluid based on the physical properties of particles in particle-based fluid simulations. Our method involves analyzing which weights, closely related to surface tracking among the various physical properties of fluid particles, are significant. These weights are used as input values for the learning algorithm, enabling relatively accurate isoline tracking. In addition, compared to existing learning models such as linear regression, LSTM (long short-term memory), and learning representation (1-layer) models, our method obtained superior surface tracking results without accumulating errors. By using our proposed network structure to track the fluid surface, it learns and predicts values derived from existing fluid simulation algorithms, eliminating the need for computational processes for level-set values and enabling real-time surface tracking. As the scale of the simulation increases, our method significantly reduces the time and resources consumed compared to traditional methods and can track the fluid surface without additional resource consumption. Furthermore, due to our method's simple network structure, the time consumed in the initial process of loading the model into memory is faster than models such as CNN and LSTM. Our proposed model occupies less than 30 kb of storage space, making it suitable for use in middleware. Over the last few years, a plethora of papers presenting machine-learning-based approaches for intrusion detection have been published. However, the majority of those papers do not compare their results with a proper baseline of a signature-based intrusion detection system, thus violating good machine learning practices. In order to evaluate the pros and cons of the machine-learning-based approach, we replicated a research study that uses a deep neural network model for intrusion detection. The results of our replicated research study expose several systematic problems with the used datasets and evaluation methods. In our experiments, a signature-based intrusion detection system with a minimal setup was able to outperform the tested model even under small traffic changes. Testing the replicated neural network on a new dataset recorded in the same environment with the same attacks using the same tools showed that the accuracy of the neural network dropped to 54%. This paper introduces a novel one-dimensional convolutional neural network that utilizes clinical data to accurately detect choledocholithiasis, where gallstones obstruct the common bile duct. Swift and precise detection of this condition is critical to preventing severe complications, such as biliary colic, jaundice, and pancreatitis. This cutting-edge model was rigorously compared with other machine learning methods commonly used in similar problems, such as logistic regression, linear discriminant analysis, and a state-of-the-art random forest, using a dataset derived from endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography scans performed at Olive View–University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center. The one-dimensional convolutional neural network model demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving 90.77% accuracy and 92.86% specificity, with an area under the curve of 0.9270. While the paper acknowledges potential areas for improvement, it emphasizes the effectiveness of the one-dimensional convolutional neural network architecture. The results suggest that this one-dimensional convolutional neural network approach could serve as a plausible alternative to endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, considering its disadvantages, such as the need for specialized equipment and skilled personnel and the risk of postoperative complications. The potential of the one-dimensional convolutional neural network model to significantly advance the clinical diagnosis of this gallstone-related condition is notable, offering a less invasive, potentially safer, and more accessible alternative. Forest biomass estimation is undoubtedly one of the most pressing research subjects at present. Combining multi-source remote sensing information can give full play to the advantages of different remote sensing technologies, providing more comprehensive and rich information for aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation research. Based on Landsat 8, Sentinel-2A, and ALOS2 PALSAR data, this paper takes the artificial coniferous forests in the Saihanba Forest of Hebei Province as the object of study, fully explores and establishes remote sensing factors and information related to forest structure, gives full play to the advantages of spectral signals in detecting the horizontal structure and multi-dimensional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in detecting the vertical structure, and combines environmental factors to carry out multivariate synergistic methods of estimating the AGB. This paper uses three variable selection methods (Pearson correlation coefficient, random forest significance, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)) to establish the variable sets, combining them with three typical non-parametric models to estimate AGB, namely, random forest (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN), to analyze the effect of forest structure on biomass estimation, explore the suitable AGB of artificial coniferous forests estimation of machine learning models, and develop the method of quantifying saturation value of the combined variables. The results show that the horizontal structure is more capable of explaining the AGB compared to the vertical structure information, and that combining the multi-structure information can improve the model results and the saturation value to a great extent. In this study, different sets of variables can produce relatively superior results in different models. The variable set selected using LASSO gives the best results in the SVR model, with an R 2 values of 0.9998 and 0.8792 for the training and the test set, respectively, and the highest saturation value obtained is 185.73 t/ha, which is beyond the range of the measured data. The problem of saturation in biomass estimation in boreal medium- and high-density forests was overcome to a certain extent, and the AGB of the Saihanba area was better estimated. This paper presents a novel application of machine learning models to clarify the intricate behaviors of expansive soils, focusing on the impact of sand content, saturation level, and dry density. Departing from conventional methods, this research utilizes a data-centric approach, employing a suite of sophisticated machine learning models to predict soil properties with remarkable precision. The inclusion of a 30% sand mixture is identified as a critical threshold for optimizing soil strength and stiffness, a finding that underscores the transformative potential of sand amendment in soil engineering. In a significant advancement, the study benchmarks the predictive power of several models including extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), gradient boosting regression (GBR), random forest regression (RFR), decision tree regression (DTR), support vector regression (SVR), symbolic regression (SR), and artificial neural networks (ANNs and proposed ANN-GMDH). Symbolic regression equations have been developed to predict the elasticity modulus and unconfined compressive strength of the investigated expansive soil. Despite the complex behaviors of expansive soil, the trained models allow for optimally predicting the values of unconfined compressive parameters. As a result, this paper provides for the first time a reliable and simply applicable approach for estimating the unconfined compressive parameters of expansive soils. Channel estimation accuracy significantly affects the performance of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In the literature, there are quite a few channel estimation methods. However, the performances of these methods deteriorate considerably when the wireless channels suffer from nonlinear distortions and interferences. Machine learning (ML) shows great potential for solving nonparametric problems. This paper proposes ML-based channel estimation methods for systems with comb-type pilot patterns and random pilot symbols, such as ATSC 3.0. We compare their performances with conventional channel estimations in ATSC 3.0 systems for linear and nonlinear channel models. We also evaluate the robustness of the ML-based methods against channel model mismatch and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) mismatch. The results show that the ML-based channel estimations achieve good mean squared error (MSE) performance for linear and nonlinear channels if the channel statistics used for the training stage match those of the deployment stage. Otherwise, the ML estimation models may overfit the training channel, leading to poor deployment performance. Increasing global credit card usage has elevated it to a preferred payment method for daily transactions, underscoring its significance in global financial cybersecurity. This paper introduces a credit card fraud detection (CCFD) system that integrates federated learning (FL) with blockchain technology. The experiment employs FL to establish a global learning model on the cloud server, which transmits initial parameters to individual local learning models on fog nodes. With three banks (fog nodes) involved, each bank trains its learning model locally, ensuring data privacy, and subsequently sends back updated parameters to the global learning model. Through the integration of FL and blockchain, our system ensures privacy preservation and data protection. We utilize three machine learning and deep neural network learning algorithms, RF, CNN, and LSTM, alongside deep optimization techniques such as ADAM, SGD, and MSGD. Pattern recognition systems always misclassify anomalies, which can be dangerous for uninformed users. Therefore, anomalies must be filtered out from each classification. The main challenge for the anomaly filter design is the huge number of possible anomaly samples compared with the number of samples in the training set. Tailoring the filter for the given classifier is just the first step in this reduction. Paper tests the hypothesis that the filter trained in avoiding "near" anomalies will also refuse the "far" anomalies, and the anomaly detector is then just a classifier distinguishing between "far real" and "near anomaly" samples. As a "far real" samples generator was used, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) fake generator that transforms normally distributed random seeds into fakes similar to the training samples. The paper proves the assumption that seeds unused in fake training will generate anomalies. These seeds are distinguished according to their Chebyshev norms. While the fakes have seeds within the hypersphere with a given radius, the near anomalies have seeds within the sphere near cover. Experiments with various anomaly test sets have shown that GAN-based anomaly detectors create a reliable anti-anomaly shield using the abovementioned assumptions. Giga-casting, a revolutionary approach for manufacturing large, single-piece car body components from aluminium, has emerged as a potential game-changer in the automotive industry. However, these large, thin-walled castings are prone to distortions during solidification and heat treatment processes. Straightening these distortions is crucial to ensure structural integrity, facilitate downstream assembly, and maintain aesthetic qualities. This paper proposes a novel method for straightening giga-cast components using a multi-pin straightening machine. The machine's versatility stems from its ability to adapt to various geometries through multiple strategically controlled straightening pins. This paper introduces the concept of a "straightening stroke decision algorithm" to achieve precise straightening and overcome the challenges of complex shapes. This algorithm determines the stroke length for each pin, combining a polynomial model representing the global stiffness of the component with a machine learning model that captures the stiffness changes arising from the current geometry. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is evaluated through comprehensive numerical experiments using finite element analyses. The straightening performance is assessed for the straightening algorithm with different machine learning models (deep neural network and XGBoost) and compared to a traditional optimisation method. The proposed surrogate models decided the straightening strokes so that the maximum remaining distortion became 0.02% of the largest dimension of each target geometry. This paper investigates a method for precise mapping of human arm movements using sEMG signals. A multi-channel approach captures the sEMG signals, which, combined with the accurately calculated joint angles from an Inertial Measurement Unit, allows for action recognition and mapping through deep learning algorithms. Firstly, signal acquisition and processing were carried out, which involved acquiring data from various movements (hand gestures, single-degree-of-freedom joint movements, and continuous joint actions) and sensor placement. Then, interference signals were filtered out through filters, and the signals were preprocessed using normalization and moving averages to obtain sEMG signals with obvious features. Additionally, this paper constructs a hybrid network model, combining Convolutional Neural Networks and Artificial Neural Networks, and employs a multi-feature fusion algorithm to enhance the accuracy of gesture recognition. Furthermore, a nonlinear fitting between sEMG signals and joint angles was established based on a backpropagation neural network, incorporating momentum term and adaptive learning rate adjustments. Finally, based on the gesture recognition and joint angle prediction model, prosthetic arm control experiments were conducted, achieving highly accurate arm movement prediction and execution. This paper aims at evaluating the current state of research into artificial intelligence (AI)-based decision support systems (DSS) for improving construction project sustainability. The literature was systematically reviewed to explore the use of AI in the construction project lifecycle together with the consideration of the economic, environmental, and social goals of sustainability. A total of 2688 research papers were reviewed, and 77 papers were further analyzed, and the major tasks of the DSSs were categorized. Our review results suggest that the main research stream is dedicated to early-stage project prediction (50% of all papers), with artificial neural networks (ANNs) and fuzzy logic (FL) being the most popular AI algorithms in use. Hybrid AI models were used in 46% of all studies. The goal for economic sustainability is the most considered in research, with 87% of all papers considering this goal, and there is evidence given of a trend towards the environmental and social goals of sustainability receiving increasing attention throughout the latter half of the decade. Sleep monitoring has become a prevalent area of research where body position and physiological data, such as heart rate and respiratory rate, are monitored. Numerous critical health problems are associated with poor sleep, such as pressure sore development, sleep disorders, and low sleep quality, which can lead to an increased risk of falls, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity. Current monitoring systems can be costly, laborious, and taxing on hospital resources. This paper reviews the most recent solutions for contactless textile technology in the form of bed sheets or mats to monitor body positions, vital signs, and sleep, both commercially and in the literature. This paper is organized into four categories: body position and movement monitoring, physiological monitoring, sleep monitoring, and commercial products. A detailed performance evaluation was carried out, considering the detection accuracy as well as the sensor types and algorithms used. The rapid development of natural language processing and deep learning techniques has boosted the performance of related algorithms in several linguistic and text mining tasks. Consequently, applications such as opinion mining, fake news detection or document classification that assign documents to predefined categories have significantly benefited from pre-trained language models, word or sentence embeddings, linguistic corpora, knowledge graphs and other resources that are in abundance for the more popular languages (e.g., English, Chinese, etc.). Less represented languages, such as the Kazakh language, balkan languages, etc., still lack the necessary linguistic resources and thus the performance of the respective methods is still low. In this work, we develop a model that classifies scientific papers written in the Kazakh language using both text and image information and demonstrate that this fusion of information can be beneficial for cases of languages that have limited resources for machine learning models' training. With this fusion, we improve the classification accuracy by 4.4499% compared to the models that use only text or only image information. The successful use of the proposed method in scientific documents' classification paves the way for more complex classification models and more application in other domains such as news classification, sentiment analysis, etc., in the Kazakh language. In this paper, a fault identification algorithm combining a signal processing algorithm and machine learning algorithm is proposed, using a four-mass vibration MEMS gyroscope (FMVMG) for signal acquisition work, constructing a gyroscope fault dataset, and performing the model training task based on this dataset. Combining the improved EWT algorithm with SEResNeXt-50 reduces the impact of white noise in the signal on the identification task and significantly improves the accuracy of fault identification. The EWT algorithm is a wavelet analysis algorithm with adaptive wavelet analysis, which can significantly reduce the impact of boundary effects, and has a good effect on decomposition of signal segments with short length, but a reconstruction method is needed to effectively separate the noise signal and effective signal, and so this paper uses multiscale permutation entropy for calculation. For the reason that the neural network has a better ability to characterize high-dimensional signals, the one-dimensional signal is reconstructed into a two-dimensional image signal and the signal features are extracted. Then, the constructed image signals are fed into the SEResNeXt-50 network, and the characterization ability of the model is further improved in the network with the addition of the Squeeze-and-Excitation module. Finally, the proposed model is applied to the FMVMG fault dataset and compared with other models. In terms of recognition accuracy, the proposed method improves about 30.25% over the BP neural network and about 1.85% over ResNeXt-50, proving the effectiveness of the proposed method. Surface transportation has evolved through technology advancements using parallel knowledge areas such as machine learning (ML). However, the transportation industry has not yet taken full advantage of ML. To evaluate this gap, we utilized a literature review approach to locate, categorize, and synthesize the principal concepts of research papers regarding surface transportation systems using ML algorithms, and we then decomposed them into their fundamental elements. We explored more than 100 articles, literature review papers, and books. The results show that 74% of the papers concentrate on forecasting, while multilayer perceptions, long short-term memory, random forest, supporting vector machine, XGBoost, and deep convolutional neural networks are the most preferred ML algorithms. However, sophisticated ML algorithms have been minimally used. The root-cause analysis revealed a lack of effective collaboration between the ML and transportation experts, resulting in the most accessible transportation applications being used as a case study to test or enhance a given ML algorithm and not necessarily to enhance a mobility or safety issue. Additionally, the transportation community does not define transportation issues clearly and does not provide publicly available transportation datasets. The transportation sector must offer an open-source platform to showcase the sector's concerns and build spatiotemporal datasets for ML experts to accelerate technology advancements. Simple Summary: The research of this paper can be applied in the compaction parameter prediction of soil-filling materials, which can significantly reduce the amount of laboratory work and improve the efficiency of optimizing design for soil resource utilization in engineering construction. Maximum Dry Density (MDD) and Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) are two important parameters of soil filling, which affect the soil stability and bearing capacity, and thus the reliability and durability of facilities such as highways and bridges. Therefore, it is important to make reasonable predictions of OMC and MDD. Four machine learning algorithms, namely, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boosting Tree (XGBoost), are adopted in this paper to establish MDD and OMC prediction models. After training and testing, the best models of the four algorithms are compared. The results show that, as an ensemble learning algorithm, XGBoost is the best model for predicting MDD and OMC, with an R2 of 0.9234 for OMC, and an R2 of 0.9098 for MDD. Finally, the feature importance analysis concludes that the plastic limit (PL) and the liquid limit (LL) are the two features that affect OMC and MDD the most. Recent research has revealed that subtle imperceptible perturbations can deceive well-trained neural network models, leading to inaccurate outcomes. These instances, known as adversarial examples, pose significant threats to the secure application of machine learning techniques in safety-critical systems. In this paper, we delve into the study of one-pixel attacks in deep neural networks, recently reported as a kind of adversarial examples. To identify such one-pixel attacks, most existing methodologies rely on the differential evolution method, which utilizes random selection from the current population to escape local optima. However, the differential evolution technique might waste search time and overlook good solutions if the number of iterations is insufficient. Hence, in this paper, we propose a gradient ascent with momentum approach to efficiently discover good solutions for the one-pixel attack problem. As our method takes a more direct route to the goal compared to existing methods relying on blind random walks, it can effectively identify one-pixel attacks. Federated learning (FL) is a distributed machine learning method in which client nodes train deep neural network models locally using their own training data and then send that trained model to a server, which then aggregates all of the trained models into a globally trained model. This protects personal information while enabling machine learning with vast amounts of data through parallel learning. Nodes that train local models are typically mobile or edge devices from which data can be easily obtained. These devices typically run on batteries and use wireless communication, which limits their power, making their computing performance and reliability significantly lower than that of high-performance computing servers. Therefore, training takes a long time, and if something goes wrong, the client may have to start training again from the beginning. If this happens frequently, the training of the global model may slow down and the final performance may deteriorate. In a general computing system, a checkpointing method can be used to solve this problem, but applying an existing checkpointing method to FL may result in excessive overheads. Given the climate change in recent decades and the ever-increasing energy consumption in the building sector, research is widely focused on the green revolution and ecological transition of buildings. In this regard, artificial intelligence can be a precious tool to simulate and optimize building energy performance, as shown by a plethora of recent studies. Accordingly, this paper provides a review of more than 70 articles from recent years, i.e., mostly from 2018 to 2023, about the applications of machine/deep learning (ML/DL) in forecasting the energy performance of buildings and their simulation/control/optimization. This review was conducted using the SCOPUS database with the keywords "buildings", "energy", "machine learning" and "deep learning" and by selecting recent papers addressing the following applications: energy design/retrofit optimization, prediction, control/management of heating/cooling systems and of renewable source systems, and/or fault detection. Notably, this paper discusses the main differences between ML and DL techniques, showing examples of their use in building energy simulation/control/optimization. The main aim is to group the most frequent ML/DL techniques used in the field of building energy performance, highlighting the potentiality and limitations of each one, both fundamental aspects for future studies. The ML approaches considered are decision trees/random forest, naive Bayes, support vector machines, the Kriging method and artificial neural networks. The DL techniques investigated are convolutional and recursive neural networks, long short-term memory and gated recurrent units. Firstly, various ML/DL techniques are explained and divided based on their methodology. Secondly, grouping by the aforementioned applications occurs. Video-based peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) estimation, utilizing solely RGB cameras, offers a non-contact approach to measuring blood oxygen levels. Previous studies set a stable and unchanging environment as the premise for non-contact blood oxygen estimation. Additionally, they utilized a small amount of labeled data for system training and learning. However, it is challenging to train optimal model parameters with a small dataset. The accuracy of blood oxygen detection is easily affected by ambient light and subject movement. To address these issues, this paper proposes a contrastive learning spatiotemporal attention network (CL-SPO2Net), an innovative semi-supervised network for video-based SpO2 estimation. Spatiotemporal similarities in remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) signals were found in video segments containing facial or hand regions. Subsequently, integrating deep neural networks with machine learning expertise enabled the estimation of SpO2. The method had good feasibility in the case of small-scale labeled datasets, with the mean absolute error between the camera and the reference pulse oximeter of 0.85% in the stable environment, 1.13% with lighting fluctuations, and 1.20% in the facial rotation situation. One of the main problems in the application of machine learning techniques is the need for large amounts of data necessary to obtain a well-generalizing model. This is exacerbated for studies in which it is not possible to access large amounts of data—for example, in the case of ship main data modelling, where a limited amount of real-world data (ship main data) is available for dataset creation. In this paper, a synthetic data generation technique has been applied to generate a large amount of synthetic data points regarding container ships' main particulars. Models are trained using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) regressor on both original and synthetic data mixed with original data points. Then, the authors validate the performance of the obtained models on the original data and conclude whether a synthetic-data-based approach can be used to develop models in instances where the amount of data on ship main particulars may be limited. The results demonstrate an improvement across almost all outputs, ranging between 0.01 and 0.21 when evaluated using the coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) and between 0.27% and 3.43% when models are evaluated with mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). This indicates that the application of synthetic data can indeed be used for the improvement of ML-based model performance. The presented study demonstrates that the application of ML-based syncretization techniques can provide significant improvements to the process of ML-based determination of a ship's main particulars at the early design stage. Turbofan engines are known as the heart of the aircraft. The turbofan's health state determines the aircraft's operational status. Therefore, the equipment monitoring and maintenance of the engine is an important part of ensuring the healthy and stable operation of the aircraft, and it is vital to monitor the remaining useful life (RUL) of the engine. The monitored data of turbofan engines have high dimensions and a long time span, which cause difficulties in predicting the remaining useful life of the engine. This paper proposes a residual life prediction model based on Autoencoder and a Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN). Among them, Autoencoder is used to reduce the dimension of the data and extract features from the engine monitoring data. The TCN network is trained on the obtained low-dimensional data to predict the remaining useful life. The model mentioned in this article is verified on the NASA public data set (C-MAPSS) and compared with common machine learning methods and other deep neural networks. The SAE-TCN model achieved better scores on the FD001 independent testing data set with an RMSE of 18.01 and a score of 161. The average relative error of the model relative to other common learning models is 0.9499 in RMSE and 0.2656 in Scoring Function. The collection of reliable data is an important and time-consuming part of the life cycle inventory (LCI) phase. Automation of individual steps can help to obtain a higher volume of or more realistic data. The aim of this paper is to survey the current state of automation potential in the scientific literature published between 2008 and 2021, with a focus on LCI in the area of process engineering. The results show that automation was most frequently found in the context of process simulation (via interfaces between software), for LCI database usage (e.g., via using ontologies for linking data) and molecular structure models (via machine learning processes such as artificial neural networks), which were also the categories where the highest level of maturity of the models was reached. No further usage could be observed in the areas of automation techniques for exploiting plant data, scientific literature, process calculation, stoichiometry and proxy data. The open science practice of sharing programming codes, software or other newly created resources was only followed in 20% of cases, uncertainty evaluation was only included in 10 out of 30 papers and only 30% of the developed methods were used in further publication, always including at least one of the first authors. For these reasons, we recommend encouraging exchange in the LCA community and in interdisciplinary settings to foster long-term sustainable development of new automation methodologies supporting data generation.
