Three-dimensional (3D) printing with earth-based mortar is still under development and faces challenges. Optimising the mortar mixture, improving structural strength, determining the relationship between the printing speed and the amount of extruded material, and ensuring long-term durability are areas that are being refined. Additionally, regulatory and certification issues must also be considered to ensure the safety and compliance of 3D printed structures. This paper presents for discussion the records, analyses, studies, and considerations regarding initial initiatives involving 3D printing with the extrusion of earth-based mortar developed at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). Through this work, it was possible to strengthen and reaffirm that 3D printing with earth-based mortar has significant potential in the construction industry and that the incorporation of dispersed kraft paper fibres from the recycling of cement bags is an excellent resource to achieve good constructability in 3D printing with earth-based mortar. In recent years, several studies have reported the recycling of by-products generated by the paper industry and their application to the construction industry. A majority of the existing studies used waste paper sludge ash, and considerable energy is consumed in such incineration processes. This may further contribute to air pollution. In this study, we used waste newspaper (WNP), which underwent a simple crushing process without a separate high-temperature treatment process, and we integrated it in cement mortar. We prepared mortars containing 0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1.0% ground WNP as a cement substitute. Subsequently, the fluidity, compressive strength, tensile strength, carbonation depth, drying shrinkage, and microstructure of the mortars were compared and analyzed. The 28-day compressive strength of the mortar samples with WNP was approximately 3.2–16.1% higher than that of the control sample. The 28-day accelerated carbonation depth of the samples with WNP was approximately 1.03–1.61 mm. Furthermore, their carbonation resistance was approximately 5.2–39.4% higher than that of the control sample. Compressive strength, tensile strength, and carbonation resistance were improved by appropriately using ground WNP as a cement substitute in cement mortar. In this study, the appropriate amount of WNP according to the mechanical properties of cement mortar was found to be 0.4–0.8%, and considering the durability characteristics, the value 0.6 was the most ideal. The precise and visual analysis of solid waste recycling in concrete construction engineering is critical for the development of ecological civilization and for the secure supply of resources. This research makes a bibliometric analysis of the solid waste application in concrete construction engineering from 2000 to 2021 based on the Web of Science. The global bibliometric status, current research focus and future directions were used to indicate the global development of solid waste recycling in concrete construction engineering. The most reused solid wastes and most solid waste productive regions were concluded with this bibliometric analysis. China is far ahead of other countries in solid waste recycling in all aspects and heavy metal is one of the most prominent solid waste themes in China. By analyzing the most studied solid waste, fly ash appears to be the most popular and is widely used; half of the top ten-cited papers are correlated with it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the new potential strategy of using fine recycled aggregates (fRA) derived from waste 3D printed concrete (3DPC) as a substitute for cement in additive manufacturing. This study hypothesizes that fRA can optimize mixture design, reduce cement content, and contribute to sustainable construction practices. Experimental programs were conducted to evaluate the fresh and hardened properties, printability window, and buildability of 3DPC mixes containing fRA. Mixes with replacement rates of cement with fRA by 10 vol%, 20 vol%, 30 vol%, 40 vol%, and 50 vol% were produced. A comprehensive experimental protocol consisting of rheological studies (static and dynamic yield stress), dynamic elastic modulus determination (first 24 h of hydration), flexural and compressive strengths (2 d and 28 d), and an open porosity test was performed. The obtained results were verified by printing tests. In addition, an economic and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of the mixes was performed. The results indicate that up to 50 vol% cement replacement with fRA is feasible, albeit with some technical drawbacks. While fRA incorporation enhances sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions and material costs, it adversely affects the printability window, green strength, setting time, and mechanical properties, particularly in the initial curing stages. Therefore, with higher replacement rates (above 20 vol%), potential optimization efforts are needed to mitigate drawbacks such as reduced green strength and buildability. Notably, replacement rates of up to 20 vol% can be successfully used without compromising the overall material properties or altering the mixture design. The LCA analysis shows that reducing the cement content and increasing the fRA addition results in a significant reduction in mix cost (up to 24%) and a substantial decrease in equivalent CO2 emissions (up to 48%). Widely used in the making of sculptures and prefabricated building components, ferrocement is considered to be beneficial to environmental preservation. However, there is still little attention paid to the making shape and design of the ferrocement in the literature. Moreover, there are some disadvantages associated with ferrocement, such as the lengthy and complex process of binding poles and nets together. The research question to solve in this paper is about how to study the making shape of ferrocement when solving these disadvantages, so as to improve the characteristics of ferrocement. In this research, a dialogue is conducted between concrete fabrication and ferrocement, the focus of which is placed more on the material and craft instead of robotics as the recent frontier of concrete fabrication. By replacing the standard wire mesh in the ferrocement with steel, how to make the steel plate from two dimensions to three dimensions, and then assemble them into a steel skeleton is explored. Then, the craft of casting is studied for integration of the cement mixture into the steel skeleton and its tight attachment onto the steel surface with spraying. Apart from that, a digital software is applied to the simulation and design accompanied by physical experimentation. To sum up, the research demonstrates the potential of free-forming of the ferrocement and its application in the (prefabricated) building technology, with questions raised for future study. Chemical shrinkage (CS) is an intrinsic parameter that may affect the early age cracking of paste, mortar and concrete. It is well known as the driving force of self-desiccation, autogenous shrinkage (AGS) and drying shrinkage. During the first stage of cement hydration (at the initial setting time), the CS and AGS are equal. In the hardened stages, there is a difference in values between the two shrinkage parameters. This paper is a comprehensive review on CS and AGS, measurement techniques, modeling and prediction of different cementitious systems. Based on the various experimental studies, chemical shrinkage depends on the water to binder ratio (w/b) and is proportional to the degree of hydration. A low w/b ratio leads to high CS and AGS. The composition of cement has an effect on both CS and AGS. Also, incorporating supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) affects both shrinkage parameters. It is concluded that adding fly ash (FA) to concrete contributes to CS and AGS reductions. However, this is not the case when concrete contains slag. More than 170 references were consulted including 35 which were published after 2020. According to the authors knowledge, there is no published work on the effect of fibers, especially bio-fibers, on the chemical shrinkage of cement-based composites. Therefore, in addition to traditional chemical shrinkage of cementitious systems, this review includes a section on recent papers conducted by the authors on the effect of bio-fibers on the chemical shrinkage of cement composites. The quality of cement in cased boreholes is related to the production and life of wells. At present, the most commonly used method is to use CBL-VDL to evaluate, but the interpretation process is complicated, and decisions associated with significant risks may be taken based on the interpretation results. Therefore, cementing quality evaluation must be interpreted by experienced experts, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. To improve the efficiency of cementing interpretation, this paper used VGG, ResNet, and other convolutional neural networks to automatically evaluate the cementing quality, but the accuracy is insufficient. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-scale perceptual convolutional neural network with kernels of different sizes that can extract and fuse information of different scales in VDL logging. In total, 5500 datasets in Tarim Oilfield were used for training and validation. Compared with other convolutional neural network algorithms, the multi-scale perceptual convolutional neural network algorithm proposed in this paper can evaluate cementing quality more accurately by identifying VDL logging. At the same time, this model's time and space complexity are lower, and the operation efficiency is higher. To verify the anti-interference of the model, this paper added 3%, 6%, and 9% of white noise to the VDL data set for cementing evaluation. The results show that, compared with other convolutional neural networks, the multi-scale perceptual convolutional neural network model is more stable and more suitable for the identification of cementing quality. In this paper, we present the structural, mechanical and electrical properties of composite cement materials that can be widely used as substituent for cement. We start with the characterization of a composite cement sample using an analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. The measurements of the Vickers hardness, cyclic and sweep linear voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of composite cement materials were also recorded. This study compared the effect of the different nanocomposites added to cement on the mitigation of the alkali–silica reaction, which is responsible for the swelling, cracking and deleterious behavior of the material. The enhancement in Vickers hardness was more pronounced for composite cement materials. In contrast, the values of Vickers hardness decreased for the composite cement containing mortar and the control sample, suggesting that the long-term performance of cement was compromised. In order to obtain information about the bulk resistance of the composite cement material, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data were employed. The results suggest that for composite cement materials, there is an improvement in bulk electrical resistance, which can be attributed to the lower amounts of cracks and swelling due to lower expansion. In the control sample, a reduction in the bulk resistance suggests the formation of microcracks, which cause the aging and degradation of the material. The intersection of arcs in the EIS spectrum of the mixed composite cement sample gradually increased by an alkaline exposure of up to 21 days and finally shifted towards a low value of high frequency with an increase in alkaline exposure of up to 28 days. With the development of UHV transmission technology, large-tonnage disc-type suspension porcelain insulators have been widely used. Insulators with cylindrical heads have the advantages of light weight and high strength compared with traditional insulators with conical heads. Cement is an important part of disc-type suspension porcelain insulators. The drying shrinkage of cement can lead to sliding between cement and porcelain. It can also transform the stress distribution of the porcelain, thus influencing the overall long-term mechanical performance of the insulators. In this paper, the effect of the shrinkage of cement on the stress distribution of porcelain insulators was studied by simulation. In addition, the effect of the drying shrinkage rates of cement on insulators with cylindrical and conical heads were compared. The simulation results show that cylindrical-head insulators can better resist the stress change caused by cement shrinkage than the conical-head insulators, which was beneficial to the long-term performance of the insulators. Based on the tensile stress of porcelain parts, the recommended range of the drying shrinkage rate of cement for insulators with cylindrical heads was presented. For the first time, this paper explores the role of hydration kinetics on microcrack development in cement mortars using the μ-CT technique with a resolution of 2.2 µm. Three binders were tested: fine-grained ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with Blaine fineness of 391 m2/kg, coarse-grained OPC made from the same clinker with Blaine fineness of 273 m2/kg, and H-cement as a representative of the alkali-activated binder. It was found that most microcracks have a width in the range of 5–10 µm, increasing their occurrence with the progress of sealed hydration. While H-cement and coarse-grained OPC showed a comparable number of microcracks, fine-grained OPC exhibited more than twice the number of microcracks. In this sense, high hydration kinetics induce more microcracks, promoting later coalescence into visible cracks and disintegration of concrete at the end. In recent years, because of the continuous expansion of urban areas, an increased necessity to isolate historically polluted sites by means of artificial, flexible, low-permeability barriers has emerged. Moreover, due to cost and efficiency considerations, various combinations of materials that fulfill the previously stated requirements have been proposed. On the basis of a literature review, this paper analyses the relationships between water, cement, and bentonite, and the physical and mechanical properties of the resulting material created in combination with standard sand introduced in the mixture using a ratio of 2:1 with respect to the solid part of the mixture (cement and bentonite). The quantity of standard sand was established following previous research conducted by the authors. The relation between water, cement, and bentonite is analyzed through properties such as viscosity, permeability, and undrained cohesion, and the representation of mixtures and their corresponding parameters was carried out using a ternary diagram. This paper provides a graphical approach to finding the optimum water/bentonite/cement mixture required for barrier design, taking into account permeability, undrained cohesion, and mixture viscosity. The risk of the releasing of nanometric particles from construction materials with nanometric components might be one of the biggest threats to further development of them. One of the possible ingress routes to human organisms is the respiratory system. Therefore, it is crucial to determine the risk of emission of nanometric particles during material usage. In the presented paper, abrasion of mortar samples with nanometric TiO2 was investigated. A special abrasion test setup was developed to reflect everyday abrasion of the concrete surface of pavements. In the study, three TiO2-modifed mortar series (and respective reference series) underwent the developed test protocol and the grains were mobilized from their surface due to the applied load analyzed (granulation, morphology, and chemical composition). For a comparative analysis, an abrasion parameter was developed. Based on the obtained results, the modification of cementitious composites with nanometric TiO2 contributed to a reduction in the emission of aerosols and, therefore, confirmed the compatibility between TiO2 and cement matrix. Soil concrete is a material produced by mixing the soil at the site with a hydraulic binder. This paper aims to study the influence of the nature of binder on the physical and mechanical properties of soil concrete. For the mixtures, three types of soil were chosen and studied: sandy clay with a granular class of 0/5 (SA5), laterite with a granular class of 0/5 (LA5), and laterite with a granular class of 0/10 (LA10). Three different cements were used: CEM I 52.5, CEM II 42.5, and CEM III 32.5, with cement contents of 150 and 250 kg/m3. The soil concretes were designed for a constant spread of 32–33 cm measured on a mini-slump. The results showed that LA5-based soil concrete has a higher water content of about 8.8% more than SA5 and LA10-based soil concretes. For all the mixtures, the lowest porosity values were obtained with CEM III 32.5, followed by CEM I 52.5, and finally CEM II 42.5. For the three types of cement and the same soil granular size, the compressive strength, static, and dynamic modulus of SA5-based soil concretes are higher than LA5. It was noted that the mechanical properties of soil concretes made with CEM III 32.5 are higher than those made with CEM I 52.5 and CEM II 42.5. Regardless of the type of cement used, the mechanical properties obtained on LA10-based soil concrete are higher than those on LA5-based soil concrete. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Desert areas contain abundant desert sand (DS) resources, and high-volume recycling of DS resources as components of cement-based materials can achieve high-value applications. In this paper, DS was processed into desert sand powder (DSP) and replaced with cement in high volumes (20 wt.%–60 wt.%) to produce cement pastes. The mechanical properties, heat evolution, nanomechanical characteristics, microstructure, and economic and environmental impact of cement pastes were studied. The results show that adding 20 wt.% DSP increases the compressive strength of pastes and accelerates cement hydration, compared with the control group (0 wt.% DSP). Meanwhile, incorporating an appropriate amount of DSP (20 wt.%) effectively reduces porosity, increases the proportion of harmless and less harmful pores, and reduces the proportion of more harmful pores. From the perspective of nanoscopic properties, the addition of 20 wt.% DSP increases the C-S-H volume fraction, especially enhancing the transformation of low-density C-S-H to high-density C-S-H. Notably, the sample incorporating 60 wt.% DSP exhibits the lowest values for CI coefficients (13.02 kg/MPa·m3) and Cp coefficients (2.29 USD/MPa·m3), thereby validating the application of high-volume DSP feasibility in cement-based materials. Cement-based materials encompass a broad spectrum of construction materials that utilize cement as the primary binding agent. Among these materials, concrete stands out as the most commonly employed. The cement, which is the principal constituent of these materials, undergoes a hydration reaction with water, playing a crucial role in the formation of the hardened composite. However, the exothermic nature of this reaction leads to significant temperature rise within the concrete elements, particularly during the early stages of hardening and in structures of substantial thickness. This temperature rise underscores the critical importance of predictive modeling in this domain. This paper presents a review of modeling approaches designed to predict temperature and accompanying moisture fields during concrete hardening, examining different levels of modeling accuracy and essential input parameters. While modern commercial finite element method (FEM) software programs are available for simulating thermal and moisture fields in concrete, they are accompanied by inherent limitations that engineers must know. The authors further evaluate effective commercial software tools tailored for predicting these effects, intending to provide construction engineers and stakeholders with guidance on managing temperature and moisture impacts in early-age concrete. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of calcium nitrite (CN) on improving the mechanical properties and microstructures of early-frozen cement paste. Cement pastes containing 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, and 3% CN were prepared. One batch of samples was frozen at −6 °C for 7 days and then cured at 20 °C, and the other batch of samples was directly cured at 20 °C as a control. The compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and resistivity of all specimens at different target ages were measured under these two curing conditions. The hydration products and microstructures of typical samples were observed using XRD and scanning SEM. The results showed that the addition of 1.5% CN could promote cement hydration and enhance slurry densification, thereby increasing the compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and electrical resistivity of the slurry, and positively affecting the early freezing resistance of the slurry. However, when the CN dosage exceeded 1.5%, the internal structure of the slurry was loose and porous due to the generation of a large amount of nitrite–AFm, which negatively affects the properties of the cement paste. In addition, the effectiveness of CN is only limited to temperature environments above −6 °C. Concrete antifreeze suitable for lower temperatures still requires further research. Magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC), an alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC), has attracted increasing research interest for its excellent mechanical properties and its green and sustainable attributes. The poor water resistance of MOC limited its usage mainly to indoor applications; nevertheless, recent advances in water-resistant MOC have expanded the material's potential applications from indoor to outdoor. This review aims to showcase recent advances in MOC, including water-resistant MOC and ductile fiber-reinforced MOC (FRMOC), exploring their potential applications including in sustainable construction for future generations. The mechanism under different curing procedures such as normal and CO2 curing and the effect of different inorganic and organic additives on the water resistance of MOC composites are discussed. In particular, the review highlights the recent developments in achieving over 100% strength retention under water at 28 days as well as advancements in FRMOC, where tensile strength has surpassed 10 MPa with a remarkable strain capacity ranging from 4–8%. This paper also sheds light on the potential applications of MOC as a fire-resistant coating material, green-wood-MOC composite building material, and in reducing solid waste industrial byproduct accumulations. The utilization of bio-fiber materials in building components has become imperative for improving sustainability, controlling global warming, addressing environmental concerns, and enhancing concrete properties. This study is part of a wide-range investigation on the use of Phragmites-Australis (PhA) fibers in construction and building materials. In this paper, the volume stability and mechanical properties of paste containing PhA fibers and exposed to high temperatures were investigated. Four mixes were made with 0, 0.5, 1, and 2% fibers by volume. To evaluate the volume stability and mechanical properties, the chemical shrinkage, autogenous shrinkage, drying shrinkage, expansion, ultrasonic pulse velocity, compressive strength, and flexural strength were tested. The curing duration and temperature were 180 days and 45 °C, respectively. The results indicated that an addition of PhA fibers of up to 2% resulted in a reduction in all the shrinkage parameters at 180 days. The presence of PhA fibers in the paste tended to reduce the compressive strength, with the lowest value observed at 2%. Apart from the values at 90 days, the optimal flexural strength seemed to be achieved by the paste with 1% PhA fibers. To further elucidate the experimental results, a hyperbolic model was employed to predict the variation in the length change as a function of the curing age with a high accuracy. Additives such as nano-silica and fly ash are widely used in cement and concrete materials to improve the rheology of fresh cement and concrete and the performance of hardened materials and increase the sustainability of the cement and concrete industry by reducing the usage of Portland cement. Therefore, it is important to study the effect of these additives on the rheological behavior of fresh cement. In this paper, we study the pulsating Poiseuille flow of fresh cement in a horizontal pipe by considering two different additives and when they are combined (nano-silica, fly ash, combined nano-silica, and fly ash). To model the fresh cement suspension, we used a modified form of the power-law model to demonstrate the dependency of the cement viscosity on the shear rate and volume fraction of cement and the additive particles. The convection–diffusion equation was used to solve for the volume fraction. After solving the equations in the dimensionless forms, we conducted a parametric study to analyze the effects of nano-silica, fly ash, and combined nano-silica and fly ash additives on the velocity and volume fraction profiles of the cement suspension. According to the parametric study presented here, larger nano-silica content results in lower centerline velocity of the cement suspension and larger non-uniformity of the volume fraction. Compared to nano-silica, fly ash exhibits an opposite effect on the velocity. Larger fly ash content results in higher centerline velocity, while the effect of the fly ash on the volume fraction is not obvious. For cement suspension containing combined nano-silica and fly ash additives, nano-silica plays a dominant role in the flow behavior of the suspension. Nowadays, the sustainable development of the construction industry has become a focus of attention. Crushing and grinding waste seashells originating from the fishery industry, such as oyster shells, cockle shells, mussel shells, and scallop shells, into different particle sizes for usage as aggregate and cement in concrete or mortar provides an effective and sustainable solution to environmental problems by reducing natural resource dependence. Numerous studies have attempted to analyze the suitability of waste seashell as a possible alternative to natural aggregates and cement in concrete or mortar. This paper presents an up-to-date review of the characteristics of different types of waste seashell, as well as the physical, mechanical, durability, and other notable functional properties of seashell concrete or mortar. From the outcome of the research, waste seashell could be an inert material, and it is important to conduct a series of proper treatment for a better-quality material. It is also seen from the results that although the mechanical properties of seashell concrete have been reduced, they all meet the required criteria set by various international standards and codes. Therefore, it is recommended that the replacement of seashells as aggregate and cement should not exceed 20% and 5%, respectively. Seashell concrete or mortar would then have sufficient workability and strength for non-structural purposes. However, there is still a lack of investigation concerning the different properties of reinforced concrete members using seashells as the replacement of aggregate or cement. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change, has recently recognized the natural carbonation process as a way of carbon offsetting with mortar and concrete. Accordingly, this activity could be recognized as a carbon removal process for which certification should be granted. The aim of the certification of carbon removal is to promote the development of adequate and efficient new carbon removal processes. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to provide reliable results on carbon dioxide uptake by cement-based materials in Spain. Yearly, greenhouse gas emissions are reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by each country, and the natural carbonation should be added up to the carbon accounting. Therefore, natural carbonation should be included in the IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, and such accounting information should be made available promptly to the national regulatory authorities. This paper provides the results of carbon dioxide uptake by Spanish cement-based materials from 1990 to 2020 by using an easy method of estimating the net carbon dioxide emissions (simplified method) considering the carbon dioxide released by the calcination during clinker production (process emissions). The outcome of this study reveals that there was 93,556,000 tons of carbon dioxide uptake by the mortar and concrete manufactured in Spain from 1990 to 2020. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Calcined mixed clays are one of the most promising alternative supplementary cementitious materials. However, their standardized use is difficult due to the wide range of compositions of the raw materials. The reactivity potential of different clays can hardly be estimated on the basis of simple characteristics so far. This review aims to identify and compile the factors that determine reactivity. At first, an overview of the methods to evaluate reactivity is presented in order to provide a definition of this term. Subsequently, the reactivity-determining factors are compiled and subdivided into the characteristics of the raw material (chemical and mineralogical composition), the parameters of calcination (furnace type, temperature, grain size, retention time, and cooling), and the characteristics of the calcined material (physical properties and amorphous phase). Interrelations are discussed qualitatively. In the second step, a quantitative literature analysis was conducted to quantify correlations between the different factors and reactivity. However, since the characterization methods in the literature are very different, the data can hardly be analyzed quantitatively. Consequently, this paper points out what information is needed to conduct profound, comparable studies to evaluate the reactivity potential of clays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current derivation and application of traditional culture lack a scientific procedural method, and the existing processes are overly cumbersome and complex. The transformation of flat patterns requires manual modeling by professional product designers, resulting in low efficiency, especially when dealing with intricate patterns. To address these issues, this paper takes Xiamen cement encaustic tiles as an example and establishes a standardized process from the extraction of cultural elements to the 3D printing of physical products. Additionally, a one-click transformation plugin from flat patterns to three-dimensional models is developed based on the QT framework and Grasshopper platform. This plugin utilizes an edge recognition algorithm to identify the transformed patterns as editable NURBS curves. The curves are then converted into surfaces using the plugin's modeling functionality before being encapsulated. With the encapsulated plugin, users only need to input a PNG image of the desired pattern and the basic model of the desired product to obtain a product with the structural features of the specified pattern. This research aids product designers in quickly extracting the most distinctive features, significantly accelerating the development speed of cultural and creative product transformations, improving production efficiency. Recycling of multi-source solid waste is of great benefit to energy conservation and environmental governance. In this paper, a new type of environmental protection concrete for railway accessory facilities was prepared from silicon-manganese slag, steel slag, fly ash and recycled macadam. Seven kinds of concrete with different mix proportions were designed. Through unconfined compressive strength, splitting, drying shrinkage and temperature shrinkage tests, the multivariate changing trends of steel slag content, cement dosage and age on the anti-interference ability of concrete were investigated. The main mechanisms of the development of mechanical and dry shrinkage properties were revealed by the hydration process of 3SR-60. The results show that 3SR-60 had better mechanical strength under the same cement dosage. The temperature shrinkage strain decreased and then increased with the rise of the proportion of waste residue, increased with the addition of cement dosage and decreased first and then increased with the descent in the temperature. The temperature shrinkage coefficient reached the lowest value at 0–10 °C. The drying shrinkage coefficient decreases with the increase in the proportion of waste residue and increases with the increase in cement dosage. The dry shrinkage strain increased rapidly during the first 8 days and became almost constant after 30 days. Cementation of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and ettringite (AFt) developed continuously and filled the internal pores of the structure, interlocking and cementing with each other, which made the microstructure develop from a three-dimensional network to a dense complex, and the macro dimension was reflected in the enhancement of the power to resist external interference. Modern Nanjing experienced a boom in the construction industry. As an advanced material and construction system, reinforced concrete structure was also imported during this period. This paper presents the brief historical background and structural adaptability of reinforced concrete buildings in modern Nanjing. Reinforced concrete was used in industrial buildings in the districts along the Yangtze River in the early 20th century, and in public buildings along Zhongshan Road after 1927. Western-style reinforced concrete buildings used both pure frame structure system and mixed structure with a reinforced concrete frame, brick masonry and timber roof trusses. The Chinese Renaissance buildings used roof structures with different shapes and materials on the main reinforced concrete structure. Based on the study of existing modern reinforced concrete buildings in Nanjing, this paper classifies and compares different types of structures, and indicates that the selection of structures was the adaptive result of comprehensive trade-offs between structural performance, space availability and economy. This research implies the transplantation and adaptation of reinforced concrete structures in modern Nanjing and lays a fundamental structural foundation for the conservation of this architectural heritage. The pulp and paper industry generates a significant volume of solid waste during its operations. In order to mitigate the environmental impact caused by this industry, one of its residues was applied in eco-friendly composites. Therefore, this research aims to use green liquor dregs as a partial replacement for lime in coating mortars. Hydrated lime was replaced by dregs in percentages of 10%, 15%, 20%, and 30%, and the manufactured mortar specimens were tested in terms of their flowability, air content, and specific gravity in the fresh state. In the hardened state, physical and chemical characterization was carried out to determine the influence of the introduction of the dregs on the properties of the different types of mortar. Mechanical testing of the mortar specimens' compressive, flexural, and adhesive strengths was carried out, and scanning electron microscopy was performed to evaluate the microstructural features of the cement composites. In general, the types of mortar with dregs showed a high degree of similarity to conventional mortar in all studied aspects, including the 30% replacement group. The obtained SEM images indicated that the presence of dregs in the mortar did not change the formational mechanism of C-S-H crystals, maintaining the mechanical properties of the material even after the accelerated aging procedure was performed, reaching similar levels of flexural, compressive, and tensile bond strengths when compared to the neat mortar. Furthermore, tensile bond levels reached approximately 0.9 MPa for all the studied types of mortar, allowing the material to be used in external applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article summarizes the arguments surrounding the scientific discussion of the cement production process at a selected company in Slovakia. (1) The main goal of this article is to evaluate the quality of the cement production process with the intention of increasing the performance and quality of the process and the quality of the cement in various assortments. The object of this research was a selected company in Slovakia which focuses on cement production. (2) The methods of research were focused on using statistical, economic, and financial analyses and instruments of quality management, such as the Ishikawa diagram, regression diagram, correlation, and box plot diagram. The relevance of the decision of this scientific research relating to the innovation of the cement production process focused on Industry 4.0 requirements. (3) This paper presents the results of the clinker CaOF content and LS and their quality. These components are used for cement products and are responsible for the quality of cement. This paper obtained a view of barriers in the cement production process, the most important of which are the people involved and their qualifications. (4) These barriers were minimalized and indicated significant improvements in the quality of entry components in the clinker. We suggest reducing CEM III and replacing CEM I-R, which brings higher profit to the company. Temperature control is needed in the construction process of massive concrete and it can avoid the concrete cracks. Prediction of temperature development based on a hydration kinetics model can reduce the need for adiabatic temperature rise tests for concrete. However, the existing hydration kinetics model cannot accurately describe the hydration process of cement, thereby limiting the ability to further accurately predict the temperature rise of concrete based on the hydration kinetics model. This paper aims to establish a new hydration kinetics model, which is based on nucleation and growth model, and to predict the temperature development of concrete with set-controlling admixture based on this model. In this paper, the nucleation and growth of hydration products and the diffusion of free water by the modified boundary of nucleation and growth (BNG) model and the modified Fuji and Kondo's model are described. The relationship between nucleation rate and apparent activation energy and the relationship between effective diffusion coefficient and apparent activation energy are linear. However, the relationship between growth rate and apparent activation is exponential. Finally, the temperature development of concrete can be calculated by the hydration degree of the cement. Alkali-activated materials, sometimes called geopolymers, can be used as alternative cementitious materials to conventional Portland cement. Currently, there is a significant interest in these materials due to their low CO2 footprint. The typical applications of alkali-activated materials are within civil engineering; however, potential applications as well cementing material within the oil and gas industry are also receiving emerging interest. This paper presents a systematic study of the compressive strength development from 1 to 28 days for metakaolin-based alkali-activated cement. The results show that the compressive strength is highly dependent upon the initial Si/Al ratio in the mix design, as well as the concentration of the activator solution. Furthermore, due to the relatively low initial reactivity of the metakaolin material used, different types of co-binders were included in the slurry composition to improve early strength development. The two different co-binders tested were another, more reactive metakaolin material and Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS). It was found that both these co-binders performed as intended, by ensuring early strength development via precipitation of K-A-S-H and C-A-S-H gels, respectively, and also by enabling subsequent strength development due to improved dissolution of the low-reactive metakaolin. At present, it is known that when there is clay in concrete, polycarboxylates (PCE) will preferably adsorb in the clay, so that PCE cannot be fully combined with cement particles, which reduces the workability of the cement slurry. In this paper, a new type of maltitol–ammonium salt cationic (KN-lm) sacrificial agent (SA) has been successfully developed via a simple method, which makes PCE easier to bond with cement particles in the cement slurry containing clay. The effect of KN-lm on the fluidity of clay-containing cement paste is studied, and the experimental results show that KN-lm, as an efficient SA of cement slurry, makes PCE more compatible with clay-containing cement slurry, and increases the initial fluidity of cement slurry by about 19%. Further investigations of TOC, XRD, and zeta potential measurements reveal that a KN-lm ion is only preferably adsorbed into clay compared to PCE through electrostatic adsorption but without having any crystal structure change, thus resulting in good dispersion of cement particles. The addition of KN-lm plays an important role in hindering the hydration expansion of the clay by preferential electrostatic adsorption, which means PCE cannot easily insert into the interlayer of the clay. The need for significant infrastructure development in Nigeria; the high demand for cement; the challenges associated with the disposal of agricultural waste; and—most significantly—the emission of CO2 associated with cement production and use, which has a negative impact on the environment, have created opportunities for research in the construction sector. The urgent need for researchers to explore substitute materials that may sustainably replace cement in the construction sector has also been prompted by the necessity to manage Nigeria's natural resources. This paper investigates the properties of hollow blocks produced by replacing cement with nanosilica produced from rice husk waste at 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% in order to assess the impact on the hollow block's strength. The hollow blocks have four mixes: cement-to-sand ratios of 1:4, 1:6, 1:8, and 1:10 for different curing durations (1, 3, 7, 14, 28, and 56 days by spraying water). The results from the findings showed that the nanosilica produced from rice husk ash and used in this study are a good reactive pozzolana with particle sizes in the range of 1–49 nm, with majority of the particles within 1–7 nm. Hollow blocks produced at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5% replacement by weight of cement (nanosilica-crete) proved stronger than hollow blocks produced at 0% cement replacement (conventional sandcrete), with an optimal nanosilica percentage replacement of 3% by weight of cement. The structural build-up of cementitious materials is the subject of more and more attention since it conditions several processes such as formwork pressure and multi-layer casting. However, this phenomenon originating from flocculation and chemical changes is complex and its reversibility is not clearly elucidated. The aim of this paper is to examine the effect of temperature on the reversibility of structural build-up. The results show that irreversible structural build-up remains negligible despite a rise in temperature. It represents between 0.5–7.3% of the total structural build-up. The addition of SCMs allows for a decrease in this irreversible structural build-up. Therefore, a large part of the chemical contribution is expected to be reversible. The effect of temperature can be explained by the increase in the dissolution rate leading to an increase in flocculation and to the bridging effect induced by early hydrates. This study uses machine learning methods to model different stages of the calcination process in cement, with the goal of improving knowledge of the generation of CO2 during cement manufacturing. Calcination is necessary to determine the clinker quality, energy needs, and CO2 emissions in a cement-producing facility. Due to the intricacy of the calcination process, it has historically been challenging to precisely anticipate the CO2 produced. The purpose of this study is to determine a direct association between CO2 generation from the manufacture of raw materials and the process factors. In this paper, six machine learning techniques are investigated to explore two output variables: (1) the apparent degree of oxidation, and (2) the apparent degree of calcination. CO2 molecular composition (dry basis) sensitivity analysis uses over 6000 historical manufacturing health data points as input variables, and the results are used to train the algorithms. The Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of various regression models is examined, and the models are then run to ascertain which independent variables in cement manufacturing had the largest impact on the dependent variables. This paper presents an innovative method of producing a low-density, high-strength, thin cement sheet. A seaweed powder was mixed with Portland cement, a foaming agent, calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA), and a quantity of water to create an A4-sized thin sheet with a thickness of 7 mm, which can withstand 1.5 kg in weight. This sheet was then covered with ethylene vinyl acetate and a backsheet to create a sandwiched cement sheet. The advantages of this sandwiched cement sheet are two-fold. First, it can support up to 13 kg in a static mechanical loading test, without bending, for over eight hours. Second, it can be quickly recovered at the end of its life cycle. This was a preliminary experiment to produce a large cement sheet that could satisfy the loading requirements for a solar panel. The purpose of the large, thin cement sheet is to replace the glass in a conventional solar panel and create a lightweight solar panel of less than 10 kg, which would mean that the installation of solar panels would become a one-person operation rather than a two-person operation. The environmental impacts of cement manufacturing are becoming a real-time issue that requires attention. This paper investigates the mechanical and physical properties of mortars with finely ground sand as a substitute for cement. The experimental program consisted of three silica sands with a Blaine Specific Surface (BSS) area of 459 m2/kg, 497 m2/kg, and 543 m2/kg and four substitution ratios of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. A total of 12 mixtures have been prepared and tested for comparison to the reference mortar. The pozzolanic effect of the sand was evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results revealed that the fineness variation from 459 m2/kg to 543 m2/kg resulted in an increase of 20% and 30% in water absorption and compressive strength, respectively. However, increasing the substitution ratio from 10% to 40% led to a 40% decrease in mechanical strength and a 25% increase in water absorption. The statistical analysis of the results demonstrated that both factors under study influenced compressive strength and water absorption. The ANalysis of VAriance (ANOVA) confirmed that the proposed regression equations predict the experimental results. Magnesium silicate hydrate (MSH) cement has the advantages of low energy consumption, minimal environmental pollution, carbon negativity, and reduced alkalinity, but excessive drying shrinkage inhibits its application. This paper analyzed the influence of steel slag (SS) dosage, carbon dioxide partial pressure, and carbonation curing time on the compressive strength, shrinkage rate, and phase composition of MSH cement. Various analysis methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), were used to study the hydration products and microstructure. The results showed that under normal curing conditions, MSH cement mixed with different steel slag contents experienced a decline in strength at all ages. However, the greater the amount of SS incorporated, the lesser the degree of drying shrinkage. The compressive strength of all groups was improved, and the drying shrinkage was reduced by carbonation treatment. The samples with 5%, 10%, and 15% SS content exhibited shrinkage rates of 2.19%, 1.74%, and 1.60%, respectively, after 28 days of curing. The reason was that after carbonation treatment, hydrated magnesium carbonates (HMCs) were generated in the SS–MSH cement, and a Ca–Mg–C amorphous substance formed by hydration and carbonation of C2S in steel slag filled in the pores, which enhanced the density of the matrix, improved the compressive strength of the specimen, and reduced the shrinkage rate. Cement fractures represent preferential leakage pathways in abandoned wells upon exposure to a CO2-rich fluid. Understanding fracture alteration resulting from geochemical reactions is critical for assessing well integrity in CO2 storage. This paper describes a mathematical model used to investigate the physical and the chemical changes in cement properties when CO2-saturated water is injected into a wellbore. This study examines the flow of a solution of CO2-saturated water in a two-dimensional fractured cement. In this approach, a micro-continuum equation based on the Darcy–Brinkman–Stokes (DBS) equation is used as the momentum balance equation; in addition, reactive transport equations are used to study the coupled processes of reactant transport and geochemical reactions, and the model for cement porosity alteration and fracture enhancement. This paper focuses on the effects of cement porosity, fracture aperture size, and surface roughness. Mineral dissolution and precipitation mechanisms are also considered. Our simulations show that smaller initial fracture apertures tend to a high mineral precipitation self-sealing. However, a complete sealing of the fracture is not observed due to the continuous flow of CO2-saturated water. In the field of water injection wells within oilfields, comprehending the intricate mechanics of water channeling and the resulting rock damage on the external cemented surface holds paramount significance for the efficient management of reservoirs. This paper presents a comprehensive study aimed at illuminating the complex nature of rock damage on the external cemented surface of casings and deciphering the underlying mechanisms that underpin water channeling occurrences. To this end, a robust constitutive model is established and refined to capture the multifaceted interactions inherent in rock damage on the cemented surface. This model introduces a modified bonding force approach to enhance shear stress precision and thoughtfully accounts for the profound effects of elastic–plastic behavior, cracking damage, and elastic-cracking coupling damage on damage progression. Subsequently, the refined model is employed to investigate rock damage on the external cemented surface of water injection wells, encompassing variations in confining pressure, rock width on the cemented surface, and the ratio of Young's modulus between the cement sheath and the rock. The research findings emphasize the interplay between cracking and elastic damage as the catalyst for rock damage on the cemented surface. Impressively, the accuracy of the refined constitutive model for the cemented surface has advanced by over 5% compared to prior studies. The manipulation of confining pressure and the Young's modulus ratio enhances peak fracture water pressure, signifying substantive strides in comprehending damage propagation mechanics. Furthermore, the study discerns the negligible influence of rock width on the cemented surface regarding damage patterns. These findings have important implications for the effective management of water injection wells, providing insights for the restoration of water channeling wells and proactive measures against water channeling phenomena. This paper presents the main properties of magnesium phosphate cements (MPCs) to be used as coatings for passive fire protection of steel structures. The influence of various additions, i.e., waste glass powder, fly ash, a styrene–acrylic dispersion, and expandable graphite, on the fire behavior and the adhesion to steel substrates of magnesium phosphate coatings is presented in this paper. The setting time of studied cements is extended when magnesia, the main component of MPCs, is partially replaced with fly ash or/and waste glass powder. The mineralogical composition of these cements, before and after thermal treatment at 1050 °C, was assessed by X-ray diffraction and could explain the changes in compressive strength, volume, and mass recorded for the thermally treated specimens. The studied magnesium phosphate coatings have a good adherence to the steel substrate (assessed by a pull-off test) both before and after direct contact with a flame (fire test) and decrease the temperature of the steel substrate by 30% with respect to the one recorded for the uncoated steel plate. Ultra-low humidity environments will lead to changes in the microstructure of C–S–H, which will reduce the mechanical properties and service life of cement-based concrete. Thus, to further explore the mechanism on the microscale, this paper studied the water migration and the changes in the hydration products in white cement that was cured for 7 days at 20 °C and at different ambient relative humidities (RHs). The migration and transformation of different types of water in cement paste were studied by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). At the same time, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to analyze semi-quantitatively the crystal phase in the hydration products. The results showed that in the first 7 days of the curing process, the content of the different types of water and the hydration products in the cement samples were influenced by the ambient RH. The total water content of the samples will decrease with the decrease in the RH; when the RH decreases to 54% or below, the chemically bound water in the samples will increase with the decline in the RH. Additionally, when the ambient RH is lower than 54%, the grossular will gradually transform into hydrogrossular crystals with the decrease in the RH, and the hibschite with less chemically bound water will transform into katoite with more chemically bound water. This paper presents a cement hydration model over time using the cemdata07 thermodynamic database and a series of derived discrete solid phases (DSPs) to represent calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) as a binary solid solution with two end-members. C-S-H in cement is amorphous and poorly crystalline with a range of molar Ca/Si ratios from 0.6 to 1.7. It displays strongly incongruent dissolution behaviour, where the release of calcium into solution is several orders of magnitude greater than silicon. It is, therefore, important that any cement hydration model provides a credible account of this behaviour. C-S-H has been described in the cemdata07 thermodynamic database as a number of solid solutions using different end-members with differing levels of complexity. While solid solutions can be included in most modern geochemical software programs, they often lead to a significant increase in computation time. This paper presents how an incongruent solid solution between two C-S-H end-members may be represented as a number of DSPs to model cement hydration over time using the PHREEQC geochemical software. By using DSPs rather than modelling C-S-H as a nonideal solid solution, this gives the user full control of the input for the model, reducing the computational demand and analysis time with no loss in accuracy in predicting stable-phase assemblages and their associated pore chemistry over time. The slag generated as a by-product of the steelmaking process can be used to manufacture cement, reducing the generated waste and contributing to the circular economy. Currently, steelmaking companies promote long-term bilateral deals with one or few cement companies where the price is fixed, and the slag is a treated as commodity. We propose a new solution, which promotes slag reuse through its differentiation with a composition-based grouping and an auction. This process is carried out in a blockchain network, which increases trust in the system, provides guarantees about the slag composition to cement companies and helps external regulators to reliably extract circularity indicators. There are abundant sea-sand resources on the earth. Traditional sea-sand concrete faced various problems relating to insufficient anticorrosion ability. In this paper, artificial seawater, sea sand, industrial waste, steel fiber, and polycarboxylate superplasticizer were used to prepare ultra-high-performance polymer cement mortar (SSUHPC). At the same time, freshwater river-sand ultra-high-performance polymer cement mortar (FRUHPC) with the same mixing ratio was prepared for comparative study. The compressive strength of SSUHPC reached 162.1 MPa, while the that of FRUHPC reached 173.3 MPa, which was slightly higher. Meanwhile, SSUHPC showed excellent anticorrosion characteristics in terms of carbonization, frost resistance and chloride resistance, and especially for sulfate resistance. The composition of SSUHPC was separated into three parts: mortar, pore and steel fiber, and the performance difference mechanisms of SSUHPC and FRUHPC were investigated by X-ray computed tomography (X-CT), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The hydration degree of mortar in SSUHPC was higher, with higher content of CSH and CH, and its better optimized gel pore characteristics gave SSUHPC better corrosion resistance. The mechanical properties of SSUHPC were slightly poor due to the uneven dispersion of steel fibers and air pores, with an- air pore porosity of 1.52% (above 200 μm) that was twice that of FRUHPC (0.6%). In this paper, the mechanics and anticorrosion performance of ultra-high-performance polymer cement mortar prepared with seawater sea sand were comprehensively evaluated, and the mechanism of performance difference between SSUHPC and FRUHPC was revealed, conducive to the targeted improvement of sea sand concrete.
