Winter wheat is a significant global food crop, and it is crucial to monitor its distribution for better agricultural management, land planning, and environmental sustainability. However, the distribution style of winter wheat planting fields is not consistent due to different terrain conditions. In mountainous areas, winter wheat planting units are smaller in size and fragmented in distribution compared to plain areas. Unfortunately, most crop-mapping research based on deep learning ignores the impact of topographic relief on crop distribution and struggles to handle hilly areas effectively. In this paper, we propose a cross-modal segmentation network for winter wheat mapping in complex terrain using remote-sensing multi-temporal images and DEM data. First, we propose a diverse receptive fusion (DRF) module, which applies a deformable receptive field to optical images during the feature fusion process, allowing it to match winter wheat plots of varying scales and a fixed receptive field to the DEM to extract evaluation features at a consistent scale. Second, we developed a distributed weight attention (DWA) module, which can enhance the feature intensity of winter wheat, thereby reducing the omission rate of planting areas, especially for the small-sized regions in hilly terrain. Furthermore, to demonstrate the performance of our model, we conducted extensive experiments and ablation studies on a large-scale dataset in Lanling county, Shandong province, China. High-rise building areas (HRBs) provide significant social and environmental services and play a crucial role in modern urbanization. The large-scale and long-term spatial distribution of HRBs is of great interest to many fields, such as urban planning and local climate analysis. While previous studies have confirmed the value of Sentinel-2 images in extracting HRBs and their changes, current work is limited to relatively local areas and short-term analysis. One reason is due to the fact that the earliest Sentinel-2 image can only date back to 2015. To address this research gap, this paper proposes an efficient procedure to intelligently extract HRBs and their changes from multitemporal Landsat-7 and Sentinel-2 images, using a specifically designed fully convolutional network. To validate the proposed method, we selected four typical cities in China, namely, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Zhengzhou, as study areas. We utilized Landsat-7 images acquired in 2000 and 2010, along with Sentinel-2 images acquired in 2020, as experimental data. We extracted and analyzed three periods of HRBs and their changes in the four cities, along with urban rail terminal data and gross domestic product (GDP) data in the same period. The results show that the proposed method can efficiently extract HRBs and their changes in the four cities over the past 20 years, with an overall accuracy of more than 90%. HRBs changes are primarily driven by urban planning policies and geographical factors. There is a strong positive correlation between the increase in HRBs and the increase in rail terminals, both in terms of quantity and spatial distribution. Additionally, there is a positive correlation between HRBs increase and GDP increase in terms of quantity, but the trend varies in different cities due to their diverse developing modes. Gross floor area is defined as the product of number of building stories and its base area. Gross floor area acquisition is the core problem to estimate floor area ratio, which is an important indicator for many geographical analyses. High data acquisition cost or inherent defect of methods for existing gross floor area acquisition methods limit their applications in a wide range. In this paper we proposed three instance-wise gross floor area estimation methods in various degrees of end-to-end learning from monocular optical images based on the NoS R-CNN, which is a deep convolutional neural network to estimate the number of building stories. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to estimate instance-wise gross floor area from monocular optical satellite images. For comparing the performance of the proposed three methods, experiments on our dataset from nine cities in China were carried out, and the results were analyzed in detail in order to explore the reasons for the performance gap between the different methods. The results show that there is an inverse relationship between the model performance and the degree of end-to-end learning for base area estimation task and gross floor area estimation task. The quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the proposed methods indicate that the performances of proposed methods for accurate GFA estimation are promising for potential applications using large-scale remote sensing images. Soil salinization has become one of the major environmental problems threatening food security. The identification and knowledge of the spatial distributions of soil salinization are key in addressing this problem. This study assumes that a good saline land identification effect can be obtained with the help of deep learning methods. Therefore, this study used the OLI sensor data from the Landsat-8, based on the U2-Network, and proposes a method to extract saline land from remote sensing images. The study also adds different salinity indices (SI, SI1, and SI2) to explore its impact on classification accuracy. Through our method, accurate saline soil distribution information were obtained, and several verification indicators (the Intersection-over-Union (IoU), recall, precision, and F1-score) were all measured above 0.8. In addition, compared with the multi-spectral training results, the classification accuracy increased after adding a specific salinity index, and most of the accuracy indices increased by about 2% (the IoU increased by 3.70%, recall increased by 1.50%, precision increased by 2.81%, and F1-score increased by 2.13%). In addition, we also included a case study based on our methodology to analyze the distribution characteristics and changes of saline soil in the Zhenlai area of Northeast China from 2016 to 2020. We found that the area of saline land in the Zhenlai area has reduced, which shows that the extraction method proposed in this study is feasible. Overall, this paper indicates that deep learning-based methods can efficiently extract the salinity of soil and enhance the mapping of its spatial distribution. The study has the broad impact of supplementing satellite imagery for salinity modeling and helping to guide agricultural land management practices for northeastern China and other salinized regions. The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau is one of the regions with the highest snow accumulation in China. Although the Fengyun-4A (FY4A) satellite is capable of monitoring snow-covered areas in real time and on a wide scale at high temporal resolution, its spatial resolution is low. In this study, the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, which has a harsh climate with few meteorological stations, was selected as the study area. We propose a deep learning model called the Dual-Branch Super-Resolution Semantic Segmentation Network (DSRSS-Net), in which one branch focuses with super resolution to obtain high-resolution snow distributions and the other branch carries out semantic segmentation to achieve accurate snow recognition. An edge enhancement module and coordinated attention mechanism were introduced into the network to improve the classification performance and edge segmentation effect for cloud versus snow. Multi-task loss is also used for optimization, including feature affinity loss and edge loss, to obtain fine structural information and improve edge segmentation. The 1 km resolution image obtained by coupling bands 1, 2, and 3; the 2 km resolution image obtained by coupling bands 4, 5, and 6; and the 500 m resolution image for a single channel, band 2, were inputted into the model for training. The accuracy of this model was verified using ground-based meteorological station data. Snow classification accuracy, false detection rate, and total classification accuracy were compared with the MOD10A1 snow product. The results show that, compared with MOD10A1, the snow classification accuracy and the average total accuracy of DSRSS-Net improved by 4.45% and 5.1%, respectively. The proposed method effectively reduces the misidentification of clouds and snow, has higher classification accuracy, and effectively improves the spatial resolution of FY-4A satellite snow cover products. Stereo photogrammetric survey used to be used to extract the height of buildings, then to convert the height to number of stories through certain rules to estimate the number of stories of buildings by means of satellite remote sensing. In contrast, we propose a new method using deep learning to estimate the number of stories of buildings from monocular optical satellite image end to end in this paper. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to directly estimate the number of stories of buildings from monocular satellite images. Specifically, in the proposed method, we extend a classic object detection network, i.e., Mask R-CNN, by adding a new head to predict the number of stories of detected buildings from satellite images. GF-2 images from nine cities in China are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. The result of experiment show that the mean absolute error of prediction on buildings whose stories between 1–7, 8–20, and above 20 are 1.329, 3.546, and 8.317, respectively, which indicate that our method has possible application potentials in low-rise buildings, but the accuracy in middle-rise and high-rise buildings needs to be further improved. With the continuous development of computer vision technology, more and more landslide identification detection tasks have started to shift from manual visual interpretation to automatic computer identification, and automatic landslide detection methods based on remote sensing satellite images and deep learning have been gradually developed. However, most existing algorithms often have the problem of low precision and weak generalization in landslide detection. Based on the Google Earth Engine platform, this study selected landslide image data from 24 study areas in China and established the DN landslide sample dataset, which contains a total of 1440 landslide samples. The original YOLOv7 algorithm model was improved and optimized by applying the SE squeezed attention mechanism and VariFocal loss function to construct the SE-YOLOv7 model to realize the automatic detection of landslides in remote sensing images. The experimental results show that the mAP, Precision value, Recall value, and F1-Score of the improved SE-YOLOv7 model for landslide identification are 91.15%, 93.35%, 94.54%, and 93.94%, respectively. At the same time, through a field investigation and verification study in Qianyang County, Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, comparing the detection results of SE-YOLOv7, it is concluded that the improved SE-YOLOv7 can locate the landslide location more accurately, detect the landslide range more accurately, and have fewer missed detections. The research results show that the algorithm model has strong detection accuracy for many types of landslide image data, which provides a technical reference for future research on landslide detection based on remote sensing images. Cloud recognition is a basic task in ground meteorological observation. It is of great significance to accurately identify cloud types from long-time-series satellite cloud images for improving the reliability and accuracy of weather forecasting. However, different from ground-based cloud images with a small observation range and easy operation, satellite cloud images have a wider cloud coverage area and contain more surface features. Hence, it is difficult to effectively extract the structural shape, area size, contour shape, hue, shadow and texture of clouds through traditional deep learning methods. In order to analyze the regional cloud type characteristics effectively, we construct a China region meteorological satellite cloud image dataset named CRMSCD, which consists of nine cloud types and the clear sky (cloudless). In this paper, we propose a novel neural network model, UATNet, which can realize the pixel-level classification of meteorological satellite cloud images. Our model efficiently integrates the spatial and multi-channel information of clouds. Specifically, several transformer blocks with modified self-attention computation (swin transformer blocks) and patch merging operations are used to build a hierarchical transformer, and spatial displacement is introduced to construct long-distance cross-window connections. In addition, we introduce a Channel Cross fusion with Transformer (CCT) to guide the multi-scale channel fusion, and design an Attention-based Squeeze and Excitation (ASE) to effectively connect the fused multi-scale channel information to the decoder features. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieved 82.33% PA, 67.79% MPA, 54.51% MIoU and 70.96% FWIoU on CRMSCD. Compared with the existing models, our method produces more precise segmentation performance, which demonstrates its superiority on meteorological satellite cloud recognition tasks. Accurate information on dominant tree species and their spatial distribution in subtropical natural forests are key ecological monitoring factors for accurately characterizing forest biodiversity, depicting the tree competition mechanism and quantitatively evaluating forest ecosystem stability. In this study, the subtropical natural forest in northwest Yunnan province of China was selected as the study area. Firstly, an object-oriented multi-resolution segmentation (MRS) algorithm was used to segment individual tree crowns from the UAV RGB imagery and satellite multispectral imagery in the forests with different densities (low (547 n/ha), middle (753 n/ha) and high (1040 n/ha)), and parameters of the MRS algorithm were tested and optimized for accurately extracting the tree crown and position information of the individual tree. Secondly, the texture metrics of the UAV RGB imagery and the spectral metrics of the satellite multispectral imagery within the individual tree crown were extracted, and the random forest algorithm and three deep learning networks constructed in this study were utilized to classify the five dominant tree species. Finally, we compared and evaluated the performance of the random forest algorithm and three deep learning networks for dominant tree species classification using the field measurement data, and the influence of the number of training samples on the accuracy of dominant tree species classification using deep learning networks was investigated. The results showed that: (1) Stand density had little influence on individual tree segmentation using the object-oriented MRS algorithm. In the forests with different stand densities, the F1 score of individual tree segmentation based on satellite multispectral imagery was 71.3–74.7%, and that based on UAV high-resolution RGB imagery was 75.4–79.2%. (2) The overall accuracy of dominant tree species classification using the light-weight network MobileNetV2 (OA = 71.11–82.22%), residual network ResNet34 (OA = 78.89–91.11%) and dense network DenseNet121 (OA = 81.11–94.44%) was higher than that of the random forest algorithm (OA = 60.00–64.44%), among which DenseNet121 had the highest overall accuracy. Texture metrics improved the overall accuracy of dominant tree species classification. In recent years, remote sensing techniques such as satellite and drone-based imaging have been used to monitor Pine Wilt Disease (PWD), a widespread forest disease that causes the death of pine species. Researchers have explored the use of remote sensing imagery and deep learning algorithms to improve the accuracy of PWD detection at the single-tree level. This study introduces a novel framework for PWD detection that combines high-resolution RGB drone imagery with free-access Sentinel-2 satellite multi-spectral imagery. The proposed approach includes an PWD-infected tree detection model named YOLOv5-PWD and an effective data augmentation method. To evaluate the proposed framework, we collected data and created a dataset in Xianning City, China, consisting of object detection samples of infected trees at middle and late stages of PWD. Experimental results indicate that the YOLOv5-PWD detection model achieved 1.2% higher mAP compared to the original YOLOv5 model and a further improvement of 1.9% mAP was observed after applying our dataset augmentation method, which demonstrates the effectiveness and potential of the proposed framework for PWD detection. Estimation of the number and geo-location of oil wells is important for policy holders considering their impact on energy resource planning. With the recent development in optical remote sensing, it is possible to identify oil wells from satellite images. Moreover, the recent advancement in deep learning frameworks for object detection in remote sensing makes it possible to automatically detect oil wells from remote sensing images. In this paper, we collected a dataset named Northeast Petroleum University–Oil Well Object Detection Version 1.0 (NEPU–OWOD V1.0) based on high-resolution remote sensing images from Google Earth Imagery. Our database includes 1192 oil wells in 432 images from Daqing City, which has the largest oilfield in China. In this study, we compared nine different state-of-the-art deep learning models based on algorithms for object detection from optical remote sensing images. Experimental results show that the state-of-the-art deep learning models achieve high precision on our collected dataset, which demonstrate the great potential for oil well detection in remote sensing. High-resolution remote-sensing imagery has proven useful for building extraction. Unfortunately, due to the high acquisition costs and infrequent availability of high-resolution imagery, low-resolution images are more practical for large-scale mapping or change tracking of buildings. However, extracting buildings from low-resolution images is a challenging task. Compared with high-resolution images, low-resolution images pose two critical challenges in terms of building segmentation: the effects of fuzzy boundary details on buildings and the lack of local textures. In this study, we propose a sparse geometric feature attention network (SGFANet) based on multi-level feature fusion to address the aforementioned issues. From the perspective of the fuzzy effect, SGFANet enhances the representative boundary features by calculating the point-wise affinity of the selected feature points in a top-down manner. From the perspective of lacking local textures, we convert the top-down propagation from local to non-local by introducing the grounding transformer harvesting the global attention of the input image. SGFANet outperforms competing baselines on remote-sensing images collected worldwide and multiple sensors at 4 and 10 m resolution, thereby, improving the IoU by at least 0.66%. Notably, our method is robust and generalizable, which makes it useful for extending the accessibility and scalability of building dynamic tracking across developing areas (e.g., the Xiong'an New Area in China) by using low-resolution images. Green tide beaching events have occurred frequently in the Yellow Sea since 2007, causing a series of ecological and economic problems. Satellite imagery has been widely applied to monitor green tide outbreaks in open water. Traditional satellite sensors, however, are limited by coarse resolution or a low revisit rate, making it difficult to provide timely distribution of information about green tides in the nearshore. In this study, both PlanetScope Super Dove images and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images are used to monitor green tide beaching events on the southern side of Shandong Peninsula, China. A deep learning model (VGGUnet) is used to extract the green tide features and quantify the green tide coverage area or biomass density. Compared with the U-net model, the VGGUnet model has a higher accuracy on the Super Dove and UAV images, with F1-scores of 0.93 and 0.92, respectively. The VGGUnet model is then applied to monitor the distribution of green tide on the beach and in the nearshore water; the results suggest that the VGGUnet model can accurately extract green tide features while discarding other confusing features. By using the Super Dove and UAV images, green tide beaching events can be accurately monitored and are consistent with field investigations. From the perspective of near real-time green tide monitoring, high-resolution imagery combined with deep learning is an effective approach. Mapping the distribution of forest resources at tree species levels is important due to their strong association with many quantitative and qualitative indicators. With the ongoing development of artificial intelligence technologies, the effectiveness of deep-learning classification models for high spatial resolution (HSR) remote sensing images has been proved. However, due to the poor statistical separability and complex scenarios, it is still challenging to realize fully automated and highly accurate forest types at tree species level mapping. To solve the problem, a novel end-to-end deep learning fusion method for HSR remote sensing images was developed by combining the advantageous properties of multi-modality representations and the powerful features of post-processing step to optimize the forest classification performance refined to the dominant tree species level in an automated way. The structure of the proposed model consisted of a two-branch fully convolutional network (dual-FCN8s) and a conditional random field as recurrent neural network (CRFasRNN), which named dual-FCN8s-CRFasRNN in the paper. By constructing a dual-FCN8s network, the dual-FCN8s-CRFasRNN extracted and fused multi-modality features to recover a high-resolution and strong semantic feature representation. By imbedding the CRFasRNN module into the network as post-processing step, the dual-FCN8s-CRFasRNN optimized the classification result in an automatic manner and generated the result with explicit category information. Quantitative evaluations on China's Gaofen-2 (GF-2) HSR satellite data showed that the dual-FCN8s-CRFasRNN provided a competitive performance with an overall classification accuracy (OA) of 90.10%, a Kappa coefficient of 0.8872 in the Wangyedian forest farm, and an OA of 74.39%, a Kappa coefficient of 0.6973 in the GaoFeng forest farm, respectively. Experiment results also showed that the proposed model got higher OA and Kappa coefficient metrics than other four recently developed deep learning methods and achieved a better trade-off between automaticity and accuracy, which further confirmed the applicability and superiority of the dual-FCN8s-CRFasRNN in forest types at tree species level mapping tasks. Modern satellite and aerial imagery outcomes exhibit increasingly complex types of ground objects with continuous developments and changes in land resources. Single remote-sensing modality is not sufficient for the accurate and satisfactory extraction and classification of ground objects. Hyperspectral imaging has been widely used in the classification of ground objects because of its high resolution, multiple bands, and abundant spatial and spectral information. Moreover, the airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point-cloud data contains unique high-precision three-dimensional (3D) spatial information, which can enrich ground object classifiers with height features that hyperspectral images do not have. Therefore, the fusion of hyperspectral image data with airborne LiDAR point-cloud data is an effective approach for ground object classification. In this paper, the effectiveness of such a fusion scheme is investigated and confirmed on an observation area in the middle parts of the Heihe River in China. By combining the characteristics of hyperspectral compact airborne spectrographic imager (CASI) data and airborne LiDAR data, we extracted a variety of features for data fusion and ground object classification. Firstly, we used the minimum noise fraction transform to reduce the dimensionality of hyperspectral CASI images. Then, spatio-spectral and textural features of these images were extracted based on the normalized vegetation index and the gray-level co-occurrence matrices. Further, canopy height features were extracted from airborne LiDAR data. Finally, a hierarchical fusion scheme was applied to the hyperspectral CASI and airborne LiDAR features, and the fused features were used to train a residual network for high-accuracy ground object classification. The experimental results showed that the overall classification accuracy was based on the proposed hierarchical-fusion multiscale dilated residual network (M-DRN), which reached an accuracy of 97.89%. This result was found to be 10.13% and 5.68% higher than those of the convolutional neural network (CNN) and the dilated residual network (DRN), respectively. Spatio-spectral and textural features of hyperspectral CASI images can complement the canopy height features of airborne LiDAR data. These complementary features can provide richer and more accurate information than individual features for ground object classification and can thus outperform features based on a single remote-sensing modality. Deep learning-based semantic segmentation technology is widely applied in remote sensing and has achieved excellent performance in remote sensing image target extraction. Greenhouses play an important role in the development of agriculture in China. However, the rapid expansion of greenhouses has had a series of impacts on the environment. Therefore, the extraction of large-scale greenhouses is crucial for the sustainable development of agriculture and environmental governance. It is difficult for existing methods to acquire precise boundaries. Therefore, we propose a spatial convolutional long short-term memory structure, which can fully consider the spatial continuity of ground objects. We use multitask learning to improve the network's ability to extract image boundaries and promote convergence through auxiliary loss. We propose a superpixel optimization module to optimize the main-branch results of network semantic segmentation using more precise boundaries obtained by advanced superpixel segmentation techniques. Compared with other mainstream methods, our proposed structure can better consider spatial information and obtain more accurate results. We chose Shandong Province, China, as the study area and used Gaofen-1 satellite remote sensing images to create a new greenhouse dataset. Our method achieved an F1 score of 77%, a significant improvement over mainstream semantic segmentation networks, and it could extract greenhouse results with more precise boundaries. In recent years, the development of China's marine aquaculture has brought serious challenges to the marine ecological environment. Therefore, it is significant to classify and extract the aquaculture zone and spatial distribution in order to provide a reference for aquaculture management. However, considering the complex marine aquaculture environment, it is difficult for traditional remote sensing technology and deep learning to achieve a breakthrough in the extraction of large-scale aquaculture zones so far. This study proposes a method based on the combination of piecewise linear stretching and R3Det to classify and extract raft aquaculture and cage aquaculture zones. The grayscale value is changed by piecewise linear stretching to reduce the influence of complex aquaculture backgrounds on the extraction accuracy, to effectively highlight the appearance characteristics of the aquaculture zone, and to improve the image contrast. On this basis, the aquaculture zone is classified and extracted by R3Det. Taking the aquaculture zone of Sansha Bay as the research object, the experimental results showed that the accuracy of R3Det in extracting the number of raft aquaculture and cage aquaculture zones was 98.91% and 97.21%, respectively, and the extraction precision of the area of the aquaculture zone reached 92.08%. Accurate mapping of dams can provide useful information about geographical locations and boundaries and can help improve public dam datasets. However, when applied to disaster emergency management, it is often difficult to completely determine the distribution of dams due to the incompleteness of the available data. Thus, we propose an automatic and intelligent extraction method that combines location with post-segmentation for dam detection. First, we constructed a dataset named RSDams and proposed an object detection model, YOLOv5s-ViT-BiFPN (You Only Look Once version 5s-Vision Transformer-Bi-Directional Feature Pyramid Network), with a training method using deep transfer learning to generate graphical locations for dams. After retraining the model on the RSDams dataset, its precision for dam detection reached 88.2% and showed a 3.4% improvement over learning from scratch. Second, based on the graphical locations, we utilized an improved Morphological Building Index (MBI) algorithm for dam segmentation to derive dam masks. The average overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of the model applied to 100 images reached 97.4% and 0.7, respectively. Finally, we applied the dam extraction method to two study areas, namely, Yangbi County of Yunnan Province and Changping District of Beijing in China, and the recall rates reached 69.2% and 81.5%, respectively. The results show that our method has high accuracy and good potential to serve as an automatic and intelligent method for the establishment of a public dam dataset on a regional or national scale. Large-scale infrastructure, such as China–Europe Railway Express (CER-Express), which connects countries and regions across Asia and Europe, has a potentially profound effect on land use, as evidenced by changes in land cover along the railway. To ensure sustainable development of such infrastructure and appropriate land administration, effective ways to monitor and assess its impact need to be developed. Remote sensing based on publicly available satellite imagery represents an obvious choice. In the study presented here, we employ a state-of-the-art deep-learning-based approach to automatically detect different types of land cover based on multispectral Sentinel-2 imagery. We then use these data to conduct and present a study of the changes in land use in two geopolitically diverse regions of interest (in Serbia and China and with and without CER-Express infrastructure) for the period of the last three years. Our results show that the standard image-patch-based land cover classification approaches suffer a significant drop in performance in our target scenario in which each pixel needs to be assigned a cove class, but still, validate the applicability of the proposed approach as a remote sensing tool to support the sustainable development of large infrastructure. Reliable and fine-resolution electric power consumption (EPC) is essential for effective urban electricity allocation and planning. Currently, EPC data exists mainly as statistics with low resolution. Many studies estimate fine-resolution EPC based on the positive correction between stable nighttime light and EPC distribution. However, EPC is related to various factors other than nighttime light and is spatially non-stationary. Yet this has been ignored in current research. This study developed a novel method to estimate EPC at 500 m resolution by considering spatially non-stationary through fusing geospatial data and high-resolution satellite images. Deep transfer learning and statistical methods were used to extract socio-economic, population density, and landscape features to describe EPC distribution from multi-source geospatial data. Finally, a random forest regression (RFR) model with features and EPC statistics is established to estimate fine-resolution EPC. A study area of Shenzhen city, China, is employed to evaluate the proposed method. The R 2 between predicted EPC and statistical EPC is 0.82 at sub-district level in 2013, which is higher than an existing EPC product (Shi's product) with R 2 = 0.46 , illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Cloud, one of the poor atmospheric conditions, significantly reduces the usability of optical remote-sensing data and hampers follow-up applications. Thus, the identification of cloud remains a priority for various remote-sensing activities, such as product retrieval, land-use/cover classification, object detection, and especially for change detection. However, the complexity of clouds themselves make it difficult to detect thin clouds and small isolated clouds. To accurately detect clouds in satellite imagery, we propose a novel neural network named the Pyramid Contextual Network (PCNet). Considering the limited applicability of a regular convolution kernel, we employed a Dilated Residual Block (DRB) to extend the receptive field of the network, which contains a dilated convolution and residual connection. To improve the detection ability for thin clouds, the proposed new model, pyramid contextual block (PCB), was used to generate global information at different scales. FengYun-3D MERSI-II remote-sensing images covering China with 14,165 × 24,659 pixels, acquired on 17 July 2019, are processed to conduct cloud-detection experiments. Experimental results show that the overall precision rates of the trained network reach 97.1 % and the overall recall rates reach 93.2 % , which performs better both in quantity and quality than U-Net, UNet++, UNet3+, PSPNet and DeepLabV3+. It is critical to acquire the information of forest type at the tree species level due to its strong links with various quantitative and qualitative indicators in forest inventories. The efficiency of deep-learning classification models for high spatial resolution (HSR) remote sensing image has been demonstrated with the ongoing development of artificial intelligence technology. However, due to limited statistical separability and complicated circumstances, completely automatic and highly accurate forest type mapping at the tree species level remains a challenge. To deal with the problem, a novel deep fusion uNet model was developed to improve the performance of forest classification refined at the dominant tree species level by combining the beneficial phenological characteristics of the multi-temporal imagery and the powerful features of the deep uNet model. The proposed model was built on a two-branch deep fusion architecture with the deep Res-uNet model functioning as its backbone. Quantitative assessments of China's Gaofen-2 (GF-2) HSR satellite data revealed that the suggested model delivered a competitive performance in the Wangyedian forest farm, with an overall classification accuracy (OA) of 93.30% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.9229. New ongoing rural construction has resulted in an extensive mixture of new settlements with old ones in the rural areas of China. Understanding the spatial characteristic of these rural settlements is of crucial importance as it provides essential information for land management and decision-making. Despite a great advance in High Spatial Resolution (HSR) satellite images and deep learning techniques, it remains a challenging task for mapping rural settlements accurately because of their irregular morphology and distribution pattern. In this study, we proposed a novel framework to map rural settlements by leveraging the merits of Gaofen-2 HSR images and representation learning of deep learning. We combined a dilated residual convolutional network (Dilated-ResNet) and a multi-scale context subnetwork into an end-to-end architecture in order to learn high resolution feature representations from HSR images and to aggregate and refine the multi-scale features extracted by the aforementioned network. Our experiment in Tongxiang city showed that the proposed framework effectively mapped and discriminated rural settlements with an overall accuracy of 98% and Kappa coefficient of 85%, achieving comparable and improved performance compared to other existing methods. Our results bring tangible benefits to support other convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods in accurate and timely rural settlement mapping, particularly when up-to-date ground truth is absent. Accurate and efficient extraction of cultivated land data is of great significance for agricultural resource monitoring and national food security. Deep-learning-based classification of remote-sensing images overcomes the two difficulties of traditional learning methods (e.g., support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), and random forest (RF)) when extracting the cultivated land: (1) the limited performance when extracting the same land-cover type with the high intra-class spectral variation, such as cultivated land with both vegetation and non-vegetation cover, and (2) the limited generalization ability for handling a large dataset to apply the model to different locations. However, the "pooling" process in most deep convolutional networks, which attempts to enlarge the sensing field of the kernel by involving the upscale process, leads to significant detail loss in the output, including the edges, gradients, and image texture details. To solve this problem, in this study we proposed a new end-to-end extraction algorithm, a high-resolution U-Net (HRU-Net), to preserve the image details by improving the skip connection structure and the loss function of the original U-Net. The proposed HRU-Net was tested in Xinjiang Province, China to extract the cultivated land from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images. The result showed that the HRU-Net achieved better performance (Acc: 92.81%; kappa: 0.81; F1-score: 0.90) than the U-Net++ (Acc: 91.74%; kappa: 0.79; F1-score: 0.89), the original U-Net (Acc: 89.83%; kappa: 0.74; F1-score: 0.86), and the Random Forest model (Acc: 76.13%; kappa: 0.48; F1-score: 0.69). The robustness of the proposed model for the intra-class spectral variation and the accuracy of the edge details were also compared, and this showed that the HRU-Net obtained more accurate edge details and had less influence from the intra-class spectral variation.
