Day by day pollution in cities is increasing due to urbanization. One of the biggest challenges posed by the rapid migration of inhabitants into cities is increased air pollution. Sustainable Development Goal 11 indicates that 99 percent of the world's urban population breathes polluted air. In such a trend of urbanization, predicting the concentrations of pollutants in advance is very important. Predictions of pollutants would help city administrations to take timely measures for ensuring Sustainable Development Goal 11. In data engineering, imputation and the removal of outliers are very important steps prior to forecasting the concentration of air pollutants. For pollution and meteorological data, missing values and outliers are critical problems that need to be addressed. This paper proposes a novel method called multiple iterative imputation using autoencoder-based long short-term memory (MIA-LSTM) which uses iterative imputation using an extra tree regressor as an estimator for the missing values in multivariate data followed by an LSTM autoencoder for the detection and removal of outliers present in the dataset. The preprocessed data were given to a multivariate LSTM for forecasting PM2.5 concentration. This paper also presents the effect of removing outliers and missing values from the dataset as well as the effect of imputing missing values in the process of forecasting the concentrations of air pollutants. The proposed method provides better results for forecasting with a root mean square error (RMSE) value of 9.8883. The obtained results were compared with the traditional gated recurrent unit (GRU), 1D convolutional neural network (CNN), and long short-term memory (LSTM) approaches for a dataset of the Aotizhonhxin area of Beijing in China. Similar results were observed for another two locations in China and one location in India. In this paper, we forecasted the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) over the region of China using the bidirectional convolutional gated recurrent unit (BiConvGRU) model. We first generated the China Regional Ionospheric Maps (CRIMs) using GNSS observations provide by the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC). We then used gridded TEC maps from 2015 to 2018 with a 1 h interval from the CRIMs as the dataset, including quiet periods and storm periods of ionospheric TEC. The BiConvGRU model was then utilized to forecast the ionospheric TEC across China for the year 2018. The forecasted TEC was compared with the TEC from the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI-2016), Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM), Convolutional Gated Recurrent Unit (ConvGRU), Bidirectional Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (BiConvLSTM), and the 1-day Predicted Global Ionospheric Map (C1PG) provided by the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE). In addition, indices including Kp, ap, Dst and F10.7 were added to the training dataset to improve the forecasting accuracy of the model (-A indicates no indices, while -B indicates with indices). The results verified that the prediction accuracies of the models integrated with these indices were significantly improved, especially during geomagnetic storms. The BiConvGRU-B model presented a decrease of 41.5%, 22.3%, and 13.2% in the root mean square error (RMSE) compared to the IRI-2016, ConvGRU, and BiConvLSTM-B models during geomagnetic storm days. Furthermore, at a specific grid point, the BiConvGRU-B model showed a decrease of 42.6%, 49.1%, and 31.9% in RMSE during geomagnetic quiet days and 30.6%, 34.1%, and 15.1% during geomagnetic storm days compared to the IRI-2016, C1PG, and BiConvLSTM-B models, respectively. In the cumulative percentage analysis, the BiConvGRU-B model had a significantly higher percentage of mean absolute error (MAE) within the range of 0–1 TECU in all seasons compared to the BiConvLSTM-B model. The 2-m temperature is one of the important meteorological elements, and improving the accuracy of medium- and long-term forecasts of the 2-m temperature is important. The similarity forecasting method is widely used as a calibration technique in the statistical postprocessing of numerical weather prediction (NWP). In this study, the analogue ensemble averaging method is used to correct the deterministic forecast of the 2-m temperature with a forecast lead time from 180 h to 348 h using the CMA-GEPS model. The bias, mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) are used as the evaluation metrics. In comparison with NWP, the systematic error of the model for 2-m temperature is effectively reduced during each forecast period when using the analogue ensemble averaging method. In addition, the differences in forecast errors between regions are reduced, and the accuracy of 2-m temperature forecasts over complex terrain, especially in Southwest China, Northwest China, and North China, is improved using this method. In the future, there is certainly potential to apply the analogue ensemble averaging method to the bias correction of medium- and long-term forecasts of more meteorological elements. Due to its effectiveness as a risk-hedging trading strategy in financial markets, futures arbitrage is highly sought after by investors in turbulent market conditions. The essence of futures arbitrage lies in formulating strategies based on predictions of future futures price differentials. However, contemporary research predominantly focuses on projections of single indicators for the subsequent temporal juncture, and devising efficacious arbitrage strategies often necessitates the examination of multiple indicators across timeframes. To tackle the aforementioned challenge, our methodology leverages a PSO Deep-ConvLSTM network, which, through particle swarm optimization (PSO), refines hyperparameters, including layer architectures and learning rates, culminating in superior predictive performance. By analyzing temporal-spatial data within financial markets through ConvLSTM, the model captures intricate market patterns, performing better in forecasting than traditional models. Multistep forward simulation experiments and extensive ablation studies using future data from the Shanghai Futures Exchange in China validate the effectiveness of the integrated model. Compared with the gate recurrent unit (GRU), long short-term memory (LSTM), Transformer, and FEDformer, this model exhibits an average reduction of 39.8% in root mean squared error (RMSE), 42.5% in mean absolute error (MAE), 45.6% in mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and an average increase of 1.96% in coefficient of determination (R2) values. Tropical cyclones (TCs) are characterized by robust vortical motion and intense thermodynamic processes, often causing damage in coastal cities as they result in landfall. Accurately estimating the ensemble mean of TC precipitation is critical for forecasting and remains a foremost global challenge. In this study, we develop an ensemble algorithm based on the feature-oriented mean (FM) suitable for spatially discrete variables in precipitation ensembles. This method can adjust the locations of ensemble precipitation fields to reduce the location-related deviations among ensemble members, ultimately enhancing the ensemble mean forecast skill for TC precipitation. To evaluate the feasibility of the FM in TC precipitation ensemble forecasting, 18 landing TC cases in China from 2019 to 2021 were selected for validation. For precipitation forecasts of the landing TCs with a varying leading time, we conducted a comprehensive quantitative evaluation and comparison of the precipitation forecast skills of the FM and arithmetic mean (AM) algorithms. The results indicate that the field adjustment algorithm in the FM can effectively align with the TC precipitation structure and the location of the ensemble mean, reducing the spatial divergence among precipitation fields. The FM method demonstrates superior performance in the equitable threat score, probability of detection, and false alarm ratio compared with the AM, exhibiting an overall improvement of around 10%. Furthermore, the FM ensemble mean shows a higher pattern of the correlation coefficient with observations and has a smaller root mean square error than the AM ensemble mean, signifying that the FM method can better preserve the characteristics of the precipitation structure. Additionally, an object-based diagnostic evaluation method was used to verify forecast results, and the results suggest that the attribute distribution of FM forecast objects more closely resembles that of observed precipitation objects (including the area, longitudinal and latitudinal centroid locations, axis angle, and aspect ratio). International students play a crucial role in China's talent development strategy. Thus, predicting overseas talent mobility is essential for formulating scientifically reasonable talent introduction policies, optimizing talent cultivation systems, and fostering international talent cooperation. In this study, we proposed a novel fractional-order grey model based on the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) algorithm to forecast the movement of overseas talent, namely MGDFGM(1,1). Compared to the traditional grey model FGM(1,1), which utilizes the same fractional order at all time points, the proposed MGDFGM(1,1) model dynamically adjusts the fractional-order values based on the time point. This dynamic adjustment enables our model to better capture the changing trends in the data, thereby enhancing the model's fitting capability. To validate the effectiveness of the MGDFGM(1,1) model, we primarily utilize Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) as the evaluation criteria for the prediction accuracy, as well as standard deviation (STD) as an indicator of the model stability. Furthermore, we perform experimental analysis to evaluate the predictive performance of the MGDFGM(1,1) model in comparison to NAÏVE, ARIMA, GM(1,1), FGM(1,1), LSSVR, MLP, and LSTM. The research findings demonstrate that the MGDFGM(1,1) model achieves a remarkably high level of prediction accuracy and stability for forecasting overseas talent mobility in China. Accurate degradation tendency prediction (DTP) is vital for the secure operation of a pumped storage unit (PSU). However, the existing techniques and methodologies for DTP still face challenges, such as a lack of appropriate degradation indicators, insufficient accuracy, and poor capability to track the data fluctuation. In this paper, a hybrid model is proposed for the degradation tendency prediction of a PSU, which combines the integrated degradation index (IDI) construction and convolutional neural network-long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM). Firstly, the health model of a PSU is constructed with Gaussian process regression (GPR) and the condition parameters of active power, working head, and guide vane opening. Subsequently, for comprehensively quantifying the degradation level of PSU, an IDI is developed using entropy weight (EW) theory. Finally, combining the local feature extraction of the CNN with the time series representation of LSTM, the CNN-LSTM model is constructed to realize DTP. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed model, the monitoring data collected from a PSU in China is taken as case studies. The root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) obtained by the proposed model are 1.1588, 0.8994, 0.0918, and 0.9713, which can meet the engineering application requirements. Based on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model and the three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation system, this study investigates the effects of assimilation of radar reflectivity and radial velocity under different momentum control variables on the forecast of Southwest China Vortex precipitation. It is shown that the U−V control variable strengthens the wind speed and vorticity to be better matching the observation, while using ψ−χ as the control variable will produce too large increments which are unphysical. The root mean square errors (RMSE) of radar radial velocity are around 2.4 m/s in the experiment using ψ−χ control variables, while the RMSE are below 2 m/s in the experiment with U−V control variables. The composite reflectivity from the analysis of the U−V control variables matches better with the observation than that from the analysis of the ψ−χ control variables, i.e., the forecast rain band location under U−V control variables is more accurate. ψ−χ control variable enhances the cold high-pressure system in near surface, while the U−V control variable is not significant. The water vapor flux convergence in the lower layers of the ψ−χ control variable is overestimated leading excessive precipitation in the forecast. The Equitable Threat Score (ETS) of the U−V control variable is about 0.1 higher than ψ−χ control variable. In summary, the U−V control variable is superior to the ψ−χ control variable in terms of analysis and forecasting about Southwest China Vortex precipitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A simple and accurate evaluation method of broken rock zone thickness (BRZT), which is usually used to describe the broken rock zone (BRZ), is meaningful, due to its ability to provide a reference for the roadway stability evaluation and support design. To create a relationship between various geological variables and the broken rock zone thickness (BRZT), the multiple linear regression (MLR), artificial neural network (ANN), Gaussian process (GP) and particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO)-GP method were utilized, and the corresponding intelligence models were developed based on the database collected from various mines in China. Four variables including embedding depth (ED), drift span (DS), surrounding rock mass strength (RMS) and joint index (JI) were selected to train the intelligence model, while broken rock zone thickness (BRZT) is chosen as the output variable, and the k-fold cross-validation method was applied in the training process. After training, three validation metrics including variance account for (VAF), determination coefficient (R2) and root mean squared error (RMSE) were applied to describe the predictive performance of these developed models. After comparing performance based on a ranking method, the obtained results show that the PSO-GP model provides the best predictive performance in estimating broken rock zone thickness (BRZT). In addition, the sensitive effect of collected variables on broken rock zone thickness (BRZT) can be listed as JI, ED, DS and RMS, and JI was found to be the most sensitive factor. Solar photovoltaics (PV) has advanced at an unprecedented rate and the global cumulative installed PV capacity is growing exponentially. However, the ability to forecast PV power remains a key technical challenge due to the variability and uncertainty of solar irradiance resulting from the changes of clouds. Ground-based remote sensing with high temporal and spatial resolution may have potential for solar irradiation forecasting, especially under cloudy conditions. To this end, we established two ultra-short-term forecasting models of global horizonal irradiance (GHI) using Ternary Linear Regression (TLR) and Back Propagation Neural Network (BPN), respectively, based on the observation of a ground-based sky imager (TSI-880, Total Sky Imager) and a radiometer at a PV plant in Dunhuang, China. Sky images taken every 1 min (minute) were processed to determine the distribution of clouds with different optical depths (thick, thin) for generating a two-dimensional cloud map. To obtain the forecasted cloud map, the Particle Image Velocity (PIV) method was applied to the two consecutive images and the cloud map was advected to the future. Further, different types of cloud fraction combined with clear sky index derived from the GHI of clear sky conditions were used as the inputs of the two forecasting models. Limited validation on 4 partly cloudy days showed that the average relative root mean square error (rRMSE) of the 4 days ranged from 5% to 36% based on the TLR model and ranged from 12% to 32% based on the BPN model. Air-borne particulate matter, PM2.5 (PM having a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers), has aroused widespread concern and is a core indicator of severe air pollution in many cities globally. In our study, we present a validated framework to predict the daily PM2.5 distributions, exemplified by a use case of Shijiazhuang City, China, based on daily aerosol optical depth (AOD) datasets. The framework involves obtaining the high-resolution spatiotemporal AOD distributions, estimation of the spatial distributions of PM2.5 and the prediction of these based on a convolutional long short-term memory (ConvLSTM) model. In the estimation part, the eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model has been determined as the estimation model with the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) of 32.86 µg/m3 and the highest coefficient of determination regression score function (R2) of 0.71, compared to other common models used as a baseline for comparison (linear, ridge, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and cubist). For the prediction part, after validation and comparison with a seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA), which is a traditional time-series prediction model, in both time and space, the ConvLSTM gives a more accurate performance for the prediction, with a total average prediction RMSE of 14.94 µg/m3 compared to SARIMA's 17.41 µg/m3. Furthermore, ConvLSTM is more stable and with less fluctuations for the prediction of PM2.5 in time, and it can also eliminate better the spatial predicted errors compared to SARIMA. In December 2019, a novel coronavirus, called COVID-19, was discovered in Wuhan, China, and has spread to different cities in China as well as to 24 other countries. The number of confirmed cases is increasing daily and reached 34,598 on 8 February 2020. In the current study, we present a new forecasting model to estimate and forecast the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the upcoming ten days based on the previously confirmed cases recorded in China. The proposed model is an improved adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) using an enhanced flower pollination algorithm (FPA) by using the salp swarm algorithm (SSA). In general, SSA is employed to improve FPA to avoid its drawbacks (i.e., getting trapped at the local optima). The main idea of the proposed model, called FPASSA-ANFIS, is to improve the performance of ANFIS by determining the parameters of ANFIS using FPASSA. The FPASSA-ANFIS model is evaluated using the World Health Organization (WHO) official data of the outbreak of the COVID-19 to forecast the confirmed cases of the upcoming ten days. More so, the FPASSA-ANFIS model is compared to several existing models, and it showed better performance in terms of Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Root Mean Squared Relative Error (RMSRE), Root Mean Squared Relative Error (RMSRE), coefficient of determination ( R 2 ), and computing time. Furthermore, we tested the proposed model using two different datasets of weekly influenza confirmed cases in two countries, namely the USA and China. The outcomes also showed good performances.
