A comprehensive and integrative view of East Asian monsoon evolution during the Holocene is still under debate, and additional high-resolution proxy records from climatically sensitive locations are requisite to solve this complex issue. In this paper, we present three well-dated mud/peat cores from a paleo-pingo depression in the Sanjiang Plain, a climatically sensitive region to monsoon variation, to reveal the paleoenvironmental history of the wetland and discuss the regional impacts from monsoon evolution. A paleolake developed in the study area before 5.5 ka BP, and a peatland initiated thereafter consequent upon the gradual shrinking of the paleolake. This transition lasted until 4.5 ka BP, when the paleolake changed entirely to a wetland. Considering the prevalent monsoon climate in the Sanjiang Plain, we suggest that the lake-to-wetland transition from 5.5 to 4.5 ka BP indicates a rapid decline of the East Asian summer monsoon in addition to autogenic basin infilling processes. Such a remarkable monsoon weakening event has been documented across northern China, and we associate this with ocean–atmosphere interactions throughout low-latitude regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Analyses of diatoms, grain size, magnetic susceptibility, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen were applied to a 9.26 m long sediment core, spanning the last 12.2 kyr, from a small treeline lake (Tiancai Lake, ~3898 m a.s.l.) in southwest China. Diatom assemblages are dominated by Cyclotella distinguenda, Aulacoseira species, and small fragilarioid taxa, all of which are sensitive to changes in water pH and light conditions that are probably related to vegetation development and runoff processes triggered by variations in the Asian monsoon. High abundances of C. distinguenda and Pseudostaurosira brevistriata reflected cold and dry climates during the Late Glacial (12.2–11.4 kyr BP). In the early Holocene (11.4–9.4 kyr BP), a steep decline in C. distinguenda and a visible increase in Aulacoseira alpigena responded to a strengthening monsoon intensity. The persistent increases in A. alpigena mirrored strong monsoon intensity in the middle Holocene (9.4–4.6 kyr BP). After 4.6 kyr BP, the reduction of A. alpigena was related to weak monsoon intensity in the late Holocene. The main trends of diatom evolution show a general correspondence to variations in solar insolation. Three visible excursions, with an increase in P. brevistriata and a drop in A. alpigena, centered at around 8.4, 2.5, and 0.3 kyr BP, correlate with low sunspot numbers and known cold events in the North Atlantic. Some similarities and correlations between the Holocene diatom data, the North Atlantic record, and solar insolation indicate that variations in the Asian monsoon response to changes in solar forcing and the North Atlantic climate. Understanding the Holocene climate changes (especially moisture variation) and their mechanisms in the semiarid–arid Central Asia (SCA) is very important, as water availability is crucial for sustainable developments in this area. This study presents chronostratigraphy of an aeolian sedimentary sequence from Bayanbulak Basin (Xinjiang, NW China), aiming to infer the Holocene moisture history in the SCA. Luminescence dating technique was selected to construct the age framework of the study section. Since the luminescence signal intensity of quartz from the samples was too low to be detected, feldspar was used as an alternative dosimeter. A newly developed post-infrared (IR) IR-stimulated luminescence (IRSL) (pIRIR) dating protocol on K-feldspar was applied to determine the ages of samples. A set of tests on luminescence characteristics was performed and demonstrate that this method is suitable and the resultant ages are reliable. Combined with the stratigraphic investigation on the sand dune/palaeosol section, the results imply a very dry climatic condition characterized by sand dune accumulation at ~9–8 kyr, and a wet interval of 5–1.6 kyr when a soil layer was formed. This moisture variation pattern is consistent with that inferred from many lacustrine records in the SCA, suggesting a widespread dry period at 11–8 kyr. The present results appear to challenge a new stalagmite δ18O sequence, located nearby to Bayanbulak Basin, which instead suggested a humid early Holocene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Compared with the southwest monsoon, the mechanisms and history of northeast monsoon (NEM) variability over South Asia are poorly known. The NEM nevertheless contributes >/50% of rainfall to semi-arid southeast India, and has underpinned the success, over the last 2000 years, of a widespread indigenous water resource management system based on rainwater harvesting and storage in man-made lakes. Based on a power spectrum analysis of 60- to 100-yr instrumental rainfall records, we show that NEM rainfall is both chaotic in the high-frequency time domain and spatially unpredictable, but that the sustainability of the agricultural water-harvesting infrastructure is tied to excess rain from NEM cyclones. Cyclonic activity has declined sharply since 1977. Based on twentieth-century analogues, we propose a qualitative model in which storminess decreases when NEM wind intensities increase and Eurasian winter temperatures are anomalously low. Extrapolating to the Holocene time frame, model expectations for the palaeorainfall record correlate with the independently established chronologies of Indian runoff-irrigation development and the ‘Mediaeval Warm Period’—‘Little Ice Age’ oscillations, and further suggest that NEM and SWM rainfall anomalies have covaried with the same sign from seasonal to millennial timescales.
