Hominin-animal interactions at Pleistocene archaeological sites have been the main subject of research during human evolution. However, in contrast to that of ungulates, little is known about the evidence of human processing of carnivore species in this time interval of China. In this paper, we present the first case report of an interactive relationship between carnivore species and hunter-gathers in Pleistocene China, based mainly on a detailed taphonomic study of the faunal remains from Shuidonggou Locality 7. It seems highly probable that hominins butchered some individuals of carnivores and roasted bone elements with adhering meat at the site; whereas it's equally feasible that these animals were exploited by hominins mainly for their pelt or fur. In either way, evidence from the site indicates novel strategies in adaptive behaviors adopted by Late Pleistocene foragers in harsh environments of Northwest China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, studies of ancient faunal community networks have been based mostly on uniformitarian and functional morphological evidence. As an important source of data, taphonomic evidence offers the opportunity to provide a broader scope for understanding palaeoecology. However, palaeoecological research methods based on taphonomic evidence are relatively rare, especially for body fossils in lacustrine sediments. Such fossil communities are not only affected by complex transportation and selective destruction in the sedimentation process, they also are strongly affected by time averaging. Historically, it has been believed that it is difficult to study lacustrine entombed fauna by a small-scale quadrat survey. Herein, we developed a software, the TaphonomeAnalyst, to study the associational network of lacustrine entombed fauna, or taphocoenosis. TaphonomeAnalyst allows researchers to easily perform exploratory analyses on common abundance profiles from taphocoenosis data. The dataset for these investigations resulted from fieldwork of the latest Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation near Daohugou Village, in Ningcheng County of Inner Mongolia, China, spotlighting the core assemblage of the Yanliao Fauna. Our data included 27,000 fossil specimens of animals from this deposit, the Yanliao Fauna, whose analyses reveal sedimentary environments, taphonomic conditions, and co-occurrence networks of this highly studied assemblage, providing empirically robust and statistically significant evidence for multiple Yanliao habitats. More than ten thousands of bone fragments were recovered from the Lingjing site, Henan Province during 2005 and 2006. In this paper, through the quantification and statistical analyses of the skeletal elements of the two predominant species in this assemblage, aurochs ( Bos primigenius) and horse ( Equus caballus), the differential influences and weights of a variety of taphonomic agencies in the formation of the assemblage are assessed respectively. Compared to the natural agencies, hominid hunting and the subsequent disarticulation, slaughtering, and their transport of the bone elements of the prey species are the main factors accounting for the formation of the present assemblage. More importantly, this study initiatively identifies hominid's differential treatment of the bones of aurochs and horse in the Paleolithic record of East Asia and demonstrably suggests that hominids at the site have already practiced sophisticated hunting techniques and subsistence strategies and may be quite familiar with the ecological and anatomical characteristics and nutritional values of the large-sized prey animals and can accordingly take different processing and handling strategies at the hunting site. This paper presents the results of a detailed study of mortality profiles of the large herbivores from the Middle Palaeolithic (MP) bone assemblage of the Lingjing Xuchang Man Site, Henan Province. Based on the analysis of the crown heights of fossil teeth from this assemblage, we come to a conclusion that aurochs (Bos primigenius) and horse (Equus caballus) are the major prey species in this assemblage and the age structures of these animals can be best described as the "prime-dominated pattern". This study confirmed the well-established notions at many Middle and Upper Palaeolithic sites across Eurasia and Africa that MSA/MP foragers were fully effective in hunting aggressive prey species, particularly aurochs and horse. This find indicates that the hunting behaviors and subsistence strategies were not significantly different between MP and UP (the Upper Palaeolithic) humans in East Asia and hence suggests the early emergence of the modern human behaviors in this area. The value of taxonomy as a tool in palaeoenvironmental analysis depends on accuracy of determination of relevant taxa; in cases where taxa present unresolved problems of distinction (identification uncertainty and overlap), difficulties may exist in their application in facies studies. A prime example is found in ostracods of the Permian–Triassic boundary interval, considered here in sequences from south China. Low-latitude shallow-marine carbonate facies in the immediate aftermath of the end-Permian extinction (EPE) have common widespread microbialite biostromes containing abundant shelly fossils including ostracod assemblages not found elsewhere, stimulating the earlier idea that the microbialite was a refuge from stressors of extinction. These assemblages are dominated by the Family Bairdiidae that are mostly smooth-shelled ostracods notoriously difficult to resolve into sub-familial taxonomic units. Studies of ostracod taxonomy require a careful approach of integrating cornerstone aspects of their biology such as ontogenetic development and sexual dimorphism to disentangle taxonomically discrete groups. These significant difficulties of taxonomic resolution have a knock-on impact on application of the faunas in facies analysis; several studies remain open to interpretation because of these issues. Resolution of ostracod taxonomy is critical to the refuge hypothesis, because ostracods (mostly as complete closed carapaces, including juveniles and adults) accumulated in the microbialite; thus shell morphology is critical to analysis of ostracods in the microbialites so understanding the taxonomy is vital. The microbialites comprise two main facies where ostracods are abundant: (1) layers consisting of microbial components and intervening micrite; (2) uncommon shell-rich lenses of packstone-grainstone fabric between microbial layers. The refuge hypothesis is considered unlikely by some authors, who instead interpret the microbialites as a taphonomic window for imported ostracod shell preservation. However, post-extinction microbialite sheets are extensive on shallow marine carbonate platforms in Tethys and show little evidence of physical damage. We deduce that, instead of a taphonomic window, the well-preserved ostracod assemblages lived on the microbialite, and that the 'refuge hypothesis' remains viable. Hinterland intermountain basins and northern and southern piedmonts of the Qinling Mountains accumulated a large amount of loess during the Pleistocene. The loess strata not only record local paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental changes, but also contain rich hominin fossils and Paleolithic remains. In the northern piedmont of the Qinling Mountains and the lower valley of the South Luohe River, the loess strata have multi loess-paleosol sequences with aeolian loess continuously accumulating during glacial and interglacial cycles. In contrast to the northern piedmont, loess stratigraphy in the hinterland intermountain basins of the Qinling Mountains is relatively thin and contains finer loess particles. In this 'mini' type of loess stratum, the density of Paleolithic remain generally is higher than the Loess Plateau in the north of the Qinling Mountains. Based on stratigraphic, chronological, and lithic artifacts analysis in recent years, it appears that the regional lithic assemblage belongs to the Oldowan (Mode I) lithic industry, and it is dominated by choppers, cores, flakes, and simple retouched flake tools from 1.15 to 0.6 Ma. Paleolithic open-air sites such as Gongwangling and Chenjiawo in the Lantian area, Shangbaichuan and Liuwan in the Luonan Basin, Qiaojiayao in the Lushi Basin, Longgangsi and Yaochangwan in the Hanzhong Basin, Guanmiao in the Ankang Basin, and the Yunxian Man Site in the Yunxian Basin are representative sites in the region; from 400 to 250 ka, the Longyadong cave site in the Luonan Basin inherited the characteristics of the local Mode I lithic industry, the stone assemblage is made up of cores, flakes, and small retouched flake tools, such as scrapers, points, and burins; during the period from 250 to 50 ka, bi-facially retouched Acheulean tools (Model II), such as hand-axes, picks, and cleavers, were commonly found in the Qinling Mountains region. The emergence of a large number of Model II artifacts indicates that local lithic industries went through a major transition process. Zhanghuokou, Guoyuan, and Huaishuping sites in the Luonan Basin, Diaozhai, Ganyu, Laochihe, and Xiehu sites in the Lantian area, Hejialiang site in the Hanzhong Basin are representative sites in this period; to the turn of the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene, it may also exist a small flake-retouched tools lithic industry in the piedmonts of the northern and southern sides of the Qinling Mountains. The lithic assemblages in different stages of the Qinling Mountains region reflect the hominin behavioral changes and the development of lithic technology during the Pleistocene. Population age structure, preservation, and carapace abundance of the valve remains of Limnocythere inopinata in 88 surface-sediment samples from Lakes Daihai, Dali, and Hulun were examined to better understand taphonomy of limnic ostracods. The spatial changes in population structure of L. inopinata match the within-lake hydraulic gradients, with the older instars preferentially deposited in the littoral zone while the younger instars being more abundant in deeper waters. We propose that molt and mortem remains of ostracods, especially those of the small juveniles, experience downslope transport. The magnitude of transport in a lake is controlled by wind-driven hydrodynamics. There is no chemical dissolution of ostracod valves in these alkaline lakes, and degradation is mainly represented by physical breakage. The preservation of L. inopinata is related to sedimentation rate and hydraulic stability, and the spatial pattern of preservation varies between lakes. Spatial and seasonal changes in sedimentation rate and hydraulic condition, and the ostracod life cycle may have contributed to this complexity. Adult and A-7 carapaces are the most frequent among the instars. We suggest that the preferential preservation of juvenile carapaces is either related to high mortality rate or to the good preservation in deep waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
