This paper studies CO2 emissions at a global level. The authors use Dynamic Optimisation to derive the minimum penalty cost on countries every single time. They then use an Imputation Distribution Procedure to allocate the minimum penalty cost among countries. Their work provides the extension of the Shapley value cost allocation as a penalty to reduce CO2 emissions. The paper has implications for how to provide initiatives to improve cooperation on reducing CO2 emissions at an international level. Results show that a reduction in cost of only one country can be harmful for other countries. In this way, some countries can end up or worse off in a case where all countries experience a uniform decrease in their penalty cost. Therefore, the findings of this work suggest a low penalty-cost scenario that helps the countries fight for pollution reduction and provide fruitful links for policy-makers. Recent advancement in enhanced oil recovery techniques has given petroleum industries the chance to find optimum solutions to recover remained oil from hydrocarbon reservoirs. This paper aims to experimentally investigate the profound impact of reservoir characteristics such as permeability and pressure drop and foams properties such as foam quality and foams resistance factor in enhanced oil recovery processes. Therefore, a hybrid recovery technique containing a thermal recovery method (carbon dioxide) and a chemical method (foam injection) with different brine concentrations was performed to enhance the oil recovery factor. Consequently, after brine injectivity, foam injection has provided the highest recovery factor among other scenarios in shale reservoirs. Permeability increase has caused to increase in the resistance factor as the fluid mobilization is increased in the porous media. With the development of China's economy, more and more energy consumption has led to serious environmental problems. Faced with the enormous pressure of large amounts of carbon dioxide ( C O 2 ) emissions, China is now actively implementing the development strategy of low-carbon and emission reduction. Through the analysis of the influencing factors of C O 2 emissions in China, five key influencing factors are selected: urbanization level, gross domestic product (GDP) of secondary industry, thermal power generation, real GDP per capital and energy consumption per unit of GDP. This paper applies the Elman neural network optimized by the Firefly Algorithm (FA) to forecast the C O 2 emissions in China. And the results show that the performance of the FA–Elman is better than the Elman neural network and Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), verifying the effectiveness of the FA–Elman model for the C O 2 emissions prediction. Finally, we make some suggestions for low-carbon and emission reduction in China by analysing key influencing factors and forecasting C O 2 emissions using the FA–Elman model from 2017 to 2020. In 2019, New York State passed aggressive new climate legislation to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and laid out major changes for how emissions are reported. One change is the inclusion of emissions from outside of the boundaries of the State if they are associated with energy use within NY; the traditional inventory considered emissions only within the State. The new legislation also mandated that methane emissions be compared with carbon dioxide over a 20-year time frame rather than the 100-year time frame previously used by NY and still used by virtually all other governments globally. This reflected the desire of NY's policymakers for a tool that evaluates emissions from the standpoint of energy consumption and that more heavily weighs the role of methane as an agent of warming over the next few decades. This paper compares emissions based on the new approach for GHG reporting with the traditional inventory. The traditional inventory is driven almost entirely by carbon dioxide emissions. As of 2015, these carbon dioxide emissions had declined by 15% since 1990 due to an 88% decrease in coal consumption and a 27% decrease in consumption of petroleum products, although consumption of natural gas had increased by 57%. Methane emissions increased by almost 30% between 1990 and 2015, largely due to the increased consumption of natural gas. According to the new GHG reporting rules, methane contributed 28% of all fossil-fuel emissions in 1990 and 37% in 2015. Total GHG emissions remained virtually unchanged from 1990 to 2015. Main Roads Western Australia currently prohibits the strength gained from cement modified materials to reduce pavement thickness due to the lack of durability of the cement treatment. It has been found both in Western Australia and internationally that the cement treatment of basecourse "disappears" due to a chemical retardation process known as carbonation. Carbonation occurs at the interface between cement matrices and pores with the presence of carbon dioxide in pore water. This paper therefore investigates the relationship between moisture ingress and cement content. The tube suction test and the unconfined compressive strength test are applied. The tube suction test measures the dielectric value, a measurement of electromagnetic wave refl ection as an index of the performance of cemented basecourse. Subsequently, the sorptivity parameter is assessed which shows a correlation between the rate of water ingress and the square root of time. One of the important parameters illustrating the mass transfer process is the diffusion coefficient of carbon dioxide which has a great impact on carbon dioxide storage in marine ecosystems, saline aquifers, and depleted reservoirs. Due to the complex interpretation approaches and special laboratory equipment for measurement of carbon dioxide-brine system diffusivity, the computational and mathematical methods are preferred. In this paper, the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is coupled with five different evolutionary algorithms for predicting the diffusivity coefficient of carbon dioxide. The R2 values forthe testing phase are 0.9978, 0.9932, 0.9854, 0.9738 and 0.9514 for ANFIS optimized by particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithms (GA), ant colony optimization (ACO), backpropagation (BP), and differential evolution (DE), respectively. Different statistical methodologies can be employed to identify possible trend components in any hydro-meteorological time series. A pre-whitening (P-W) procedure has been suggested to reduce the serial correlation effect on Mann-Kendall (M-K) trend analysis. In this paper, instead of P-W, an over-whitening (O-W) procedure is suggested, which generates serially independent series with the same trend slope value. Analytically necessary formulations for O-W are presented with a non-parametric but simple innovative trend assessment procedure, which are supported by extensive simulation studies. The applications of the methodology are presented for eight factual time series records from tropical, temperate and arid regions including temperature, rainfall, streamflow, relative humidity and CO2concentrations for different short and long durations. Relative humidity and CO2records are monthly time series and, hence, there are trend and periodicity components. It is noticed in all cases that the natural trends remain as they were after the O-W procedure, thus providing an opportunity to determine reliably the trends embedded even in the serially dependent series. This study investigates two configurations of novel solar energy-assisted combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) systems suitable for the dairy industry. The system uses carbon dioxide (CO2) as the working fluid. The cooling and heating outputs were used for the simultaneous chilling and pasteurization of milk. The electrical power produced in the turbine is used to run the compressor and cater to the miscellaneous electrical demands of the dairy farm, thereby achieving grid independence. A detailed thermodynamic analysis was performed on the two configurations (with and without reheating) to identify the impact of various independent parameters on system performance. In addition, an irreversibility analysis was performed on the components in both configurations to obtain an idea of the losses occurring in the system. Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are a zinc metalloenzymes that catalyse the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and proton, pivotal for a wide range of biological processes. CAs are involved in numerous pathologies and thus represent valuable drug targets in the treatments of several diseases such as glaucoma, obesity, tumour, neuropathic pain, cerebral ischaemia, or as antiinfectives. In the last two decades, several efforts have been made to achieve selective CA inhibitors (CAIs) employing different drug design approaches. However, N-substitutions on primary sulphonamide groups still remain poorly investigated. Here, we reported for the first time the co-crystallisation of a N-nitro sulphonamide derivative with human (h) CA II pointing out the binding site and mode of inhibition of this class of CAIs. Urease is a kind of nickel-dependent metalloenzyme, which exists in the biological world widely, and can catalyse the hydrolysis of urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide to provide a nitrogen source for organisms. Urease has important uses in agriculture and medicine because it can catalyse the production of ammonia. Therefore, in this review, metal-based inhibitors of urease will be summarised according to different transition metal ions. Including the urease inhibition, structure–activity relationship, and molecular docking. Importantly, among these reviewed effective urease inhibitors, most of copper metal complexes exhibited stronger urease inhibition with IC50 values ranging from 0.46 μM to 41.1 μM. Significantly, the collected comprehensive information looks forward to providing rational guidance and effective strategies for the development of novel, potent, and safe metal-based urease inhibitors, which are better for practical applications in the future. Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is a common clinical critical syndrome with substantial mortality. Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) has been proposed for the treatment of ARF. However, whether ECCO2R could provide a survival advantage for patients with ARF is still controversial. Electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane database) were searched from inception to 30 April 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies that examined the following outcomes were included: mortality, length of hospital and ICU stay, intubation and tracheotomy rate, mechanical ventilation days, ventilator-free days (VFDs), respiratory parameters, and reported adverse events. Four RCTs and five observational studies including 1173 participants with ARF due to COPD or ARDS were included in this meta-analysis. Pooled analyses of related studies showed no significant difference in overall mortality between ECCO2R and control group, neither in RCTs targeted ARDS or acute hypoxic respiratory failure patients (RR 1.05, 95% CI 0.83 to 1.32, p = 0.70, I2 =0.0%), nor in studies targeted patients with ARF secondary to COPD (RR 0.80, 95% CI 0.58 to 1.11, p = 0.19, I2 =0.0%). A shorter duration of ICU stay in the ECCO2R group was only obtained in observational studies (WMD −4.25, p < 0.01), and ECCO2R was associated with a longer length of hospital stay (p = 0.02). ECCO2R was associated with lower intubation rate (p < 0.01) and tracheotomy rate (p = 0.01), and shorter mechanical ventilation days (p < 0.01) in comparison to control group in ARF patients with COPD. In addition, an improvement in pH (p = 0.01), PaO2 (p = 0.01), respiratory rate (p < 0.01), and PaCO2 (p = 0.04) was also observed in patients with COPD exacerbations by ECCO2R therapy. However, the ECCO2R-related complication rate was high in six of the included studies. Our findings from both RCTs and observational studies did not confirm a significant beneficial effect of ECCO2R therapy on mortality. A shorter length of ICU stay in the ECCO2R group was only obtained in observational studies, and ECCO2R was associated with a longer length of hospital stay. ECCO2R was associated with lower intubation rate and tracheotomy rate, and shorter mechanical ventilation days in ARF patients with COPD. And an improvement in pH, PaO2, respiratory rate and PaCO2 was observed in the ECCO2R group. However, outcomes largely relied on data from observational studies targeted patients with ARF secondary to COPD, thus further larger high-quality RCTs are desirable to strengthen the evidence on the efficacy and benefits of ECCO2R for patients with ARF. The warming impact of methane (CH4) emissions calculated using the metrics proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which measure its global warming potential in 100 years (GWP100) expressed as carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e), accounts for the greatest impact in animal production chains. This work uses the new metrics, proposed to consider the difference between short living climate pollutants (SLCP), such as CH4, and long living climate pollutants (LLCP), such as carbon dioxide (CO2), which measure the warming equivalent (we) effect relative to that of CO2 in a given time frame (GWP*) and expressed as CO2we. The GWP* was applied to CH4 emissions from all Italian livestock supply chains and compared with GWP100 for annual and cumulative assessment from 2010 to 2020 of the impact of this gas on climate change. Using official data published by Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA) from 1990 to 2020, almost all species, except for buffalo (+272.6% of emissions calculated with the new metrics), revealed lower CH4 emissions with the greatest re-dimensioning for non-dairy cattle (-53786 kt of CO2we of calculated with GWP* compared to +66437 kt of CO2e estimated with the GWP100 method). The total cumulative contribution of Italian livestock production to global warming over the past 10 years, including the nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, has been greatly negative (-48759 kt of CO2we) compared to the data calculated using the GWP100 method (+206091 kt of CO2e). In conclusion, the application of GWP* metric to CH4 emissions of all Italian livestock supply chains allowed to better identify the role of Italian livestock on climate change. Over the 2010–2020 time frame, the Italian animal supply chains reduced the warming impact related to its CH4 emission, with the ruminants (expect buffaloes) being the major contributor to this positive effect. The application of GWP* metric reduced the warming impact of CH4 emissions of Italian dairy cattle, non-dairy cattle, sheep, goats, poultry and rabbits. The biomimetic approach represents an interesting strategy for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, offering advantages over other methods, due to its specificity for CO2 and its eco-compatibility, as it allows concentration of CO2 from other gases, and its conversion to water soluble ions. This approach uses microorganisms capable of fixing CO2 through metabolic pathways or via the use of an enzyme, such as carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1). Recently, our group cloned and purified a novel bacterial α-CA, named SspCA, from the thermophilic bacteria, Sulfurihydrogenibium yellowstonense YO3AOP1 living in hot springs at temperatures of up to 110 °C. This enzyme showed an exceptional thermal stability, retaining its high catalytic activity for the CO2 hydration reaction even after being heated at 70 °C for several hours. In the present paper, the SspCA was immobilized within a polyurethane (PU) foam. The immobilized enzyme was found to be catalytically active and showed a long-term stability. A bioreactor containing the 'PU-immobilized enzyme' (PU-SspCA) as shredded foam was used for experimental tests aimed to verify the CO2 capture capability in conditions close to those of a power plant application. In this bioreactor, a gas phase, containing CO2, was put into contact with a liquid phase under conditions, where CO2 contained in the gas phase was absorbed and efficiently converted into bicarbonate by the extremo-α-CA. This paper evaluates the teaching and learning outcomes from a first-year project-based engineering course at the University of New South Wales. The students worked in teams to design and build a device to sequester "CO2" into a reservoir. We present our observation of the peer assessments, performance prediction and diversity of the students. We found that some teams collaborated more effectively than others. We quantified this effectiveness using an online peer assessment that enables students to rate the performance of their teammates. These ratings were incorporated into the assignment of individual marks for group assignments. The analysis of the marks students achieved for various assessments and components of the course is presented. We observed that female students tended to out-perform their peers in both individual and team assessments, and students who did well in individual components of the course also did well in the team components. The use of early assessments to predict performance in later assessments seems to be difficult. However, there is a strong connection between students' results for their design proposal and their results for the final design work. We are able to show statistically a signifi cant improvement for marks for presentations but not for report writing. Anonymous surveys showed that about 90% of students were satisfied with their experience of the course. Structural concrete exposed to the tidal/splash zone of marine environments is always subjected to ambient external, as well as internal, action of seawater over its entire lifespan. The environmental loading causes maximum damage to structural concrete in the tidal/splash zone of marine environments where it experiences the concentrated effect of salt ions found in seawater in presence of atmospheric oxygen, carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. The gradual penetration of sea salt ions and the formation of expansive/leachable compounds leads to cracking, spalling and even structural distress. This paper presents a part of a durability study on the effect of sea salts on structural concrete exposed to simulated tidal/splash zone marine conditions over a period of one year. The concrete specimens cast from two different grades of concrete were exposed to seawater of different concentration under submerged, alternate wetting-drying and atmospheric state of exposure in a controlled humidity and temperature environment. Using accelerated test techniques, the deteriorative effects were measured by studying visual appearance, weight and volume change, compressive strength, permeability and stress-strain characteristics, and x-ray diffraction patterns of salt-attacked concrete specimens. As agricultural scientists in temperate regions search for the next revolution in pasture productivity, C4 grasses often appear in the literature as "having potential" to push through the ceiling of production. This potential has yet to be realised in high producing pastures in New Zealand, despite investigations in the 1970s, and ongoing suggestions (a) that research would enable the full value to be exploited and (b) that the advent of genetic technologies could provide the answer. This paper reviews the New Zealand and Australian literature on C4 grasses, identifies the difficulties with incorporating them into high producing temperate grazing systems, and makes suggestions for their use in the future. With electric generation responsible for 41 percent of U.S anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from energy use, development of clean energy sources is essential if the United States is to reduce release of greenhouse gases and slow global warming. Many proponents of sustainable energy anticipate that electric generation from renewable sources would thrive in a deregulated market, driven by consumer demand for “green” energy and the end of incentives to build large central power plants under the cost-plus profits guaranteed by state utility commissions. This paper examines the flaws in this expectation. After reviewing the highly cyclical nature of U.S. energy policy making in recent decades, the study links the ineffectiveness of policy with the institutional setting. Under electric utility market restructuring, renewable energy generation (wind, biomass, solar, geothermal, and small-scale hydro) must overcome barriers such as price distortions, lack of storage capability, discriminatory transmission system access, and the end of linked utility rate hikes guaranteed to cover the additional expense of renewable generation. In the absence of strong federal leadership, the state commitment to renewable energy has been uneven under utility restructuring. Moreover, nuclear power—the other leading alternative to fossil fuel use—is beset by serious problems. Only renewable energy options offer long-term hope for sustainability. Along these lines, green marketing, renewable portfolio standards, system benefit charges, carbon taxes, public power, “Community Choice,” and production credits—all based on recent U.S. and European experience—are critically examined and recommendations made for changing course. At present, during this highly fluid period of utility restructuring, and absent more forceful regulation and demand management, it is dubious whether U.S. electricity market reform can encourage sufficient conversion to renewable energy to stem a rising tide of greenhouse gas emissions. This paper describes the design and performance of a miniature free air CO[sub 2] enrichment (mini-FACE) system. Two joined concentric rings (a CO[sub 2] fumigation vent-ring and an outer baffle-ring allowing for enhanced local mixing) can be adjusted vertically, allowing the fumigation system to trace canopy development during crop growth. These features facilitate the use of relatively small plots (1.14 m diameter). In tests based on four rings winter wheat was exposed to elevated [CO[sub 2]]. The system maintained a 1 min average [CO[sub 2]] at the centre of the control ring within ±10% of the setpoint for 77% of the operation time. In the vertical plane, where the CO[sub 2] is liberated (level 0), the setpoint [CO[sub 2]]±20% was met for 77% of the time given as a weighed mean of the ring area (1.02 m[sup 2]). The variation in [CO[sub 2]] measured among the four rings was acceptable. Background: Operative vision can frequently be critically reduced during laparoscopic surgery by condensation and other matter accumulating on the distal laparoscope lens. By delivering saline and carbon dioxide across the lens, the OpClear system is designed to maintain operative vision without needing scope removal for lens cleaning. This study evaluates the system's efficacy in providing high-level visual acuity during laparoscopic hysterectomy while examining its utility through its impact on operative duration. Methods: A retrospective audit compared efficacy and utility for the three years before and after the implementation of OpClear in a single unit. Thirty-three cases were reviewed pre-OpClear, while 82 cases were analysed in the post-OpClear group. All cases involved routine total laparoscopic hysterectomies (TLH) performed by the same surgeon (AT) with similar complexity levels. Results: The OpClear system provided a consistently high level of visual acuity throughout the laparoscopic procedures. Scope removals, which typically result in non-productive operating time, were virtually eliminated. Consequently, in highly comparable cases, OpClear usage resulted in a 17-minute reduction in operating time over cases performed without the device. Additionally, in the OpClear group, there were trends towards reduced blood loss and shorter hospital stays, with patients in the OpClear group being discharged on first rather than second postoperatively. Conclusions: The findings of this audit suggest that the OpClear system provides continuous high-level vision during laparoscopic hysterectomy. Further, reducing periods of non-productive time associated with scope removal for cleaning resulted in shorter operating times. Space habitats typically have elevated CO2 and NASA is considering growing leafy greens in space to supplement astronauts' diets. Dragoon' and 'Outredgeous' lettuce, 'Amara' mustard, 'Extra Dwarf' pak choi, shungiku, 'Red Russian' kale, 'Toscano' kale, and 'Barese' Swiss chard were grown for 4 weeks at 400, 1500, 3000, and 6000 ppm CO2. Shoot fresh mass at 28 days was greater for one of more elevated CO2 levels for all species/cultivars except 'Toscano' kale. Fresh mass varied by species/cultivar, with pak choi and 'Dragoon' lettuce showing the greatest yields. Super-elevated CO2 (6000 ppm) reduced shoot mass for both lettuce cvs. compared to 3000 ppm. Elevated CO2 increased K levels for most species/cultivars but decreased Mg for some species/cultivars. CO2 affected Vitamin B1 and Vitamin C content but had no effect on Vitamin K. The capture of carbon and sequestration (CCS) activity is considered strategic in the context of world energy policy. In fact, CO2 emissions from fossil/conventional-fuel-fired power plants can be lowered by using CCS on the same. Various other methods have been developed to date to capture the carbon and store it. This article focuses on the various carbon capture technologies and the storage technologies such as pre-combustion, post-combustion, oxyfuel technology, and direct air capture (DAC) technology, including their subparts, along with the factors affecting the carbon capture technologies. The aim of the present study is to develop an overview of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies and CO2 sequestration, including a vast coverage of the various factors that have a huge impact on CCS. It emerged that the existing technologies that deal with CO2 sequestration and capture are being used at large scale to produce derivatives including chemicals, polymers, building materials, and various other products. The newest technology that has been seen creating a huge effect is direct air capture, and commercial use of such technologies has been seen. Arctic warming and changing precipitation patterns are altering soil nutrient availability and other processes that control the greenhouse gas balance of high-latitude ecosystems. Changes to these biogeochemical processes will ultimately determine whether the Arctic will enhance or dampen future climate change. At the Cape Bounty Arctic Watershed Observatory, a full-factorial International Tundra Experiment site was established in 2008, allowing for the investigation of ten years of experimental warming and increased snow depth on nutrient availability and trace gas exchange in a mesic heath tundra across two growing seasons (2017 and 2018). Plots with open-top chambers (OTCs) had drier soils (p <.1) that released 1.5 times more carbon dioxide (p <.05), and this effect was enhanced in the drier growing season. Increased snow depth delayed the onset of thaw and active layer development (p <.1) and corresponded with greater nitrous oxide release (p <.05). Our results suggest that decreases to soil moisture will lead to an increase in nitrate availability, soil respiration, and nitrous oxide fluxes. This review concentrates on how artificial cells can contribute to helping patients with COVID-19. Artificial cells have led to mRNA vaccines with more improvements to come. Excessive cytokines in severe COVID-19 can damage organs leading to death. Artificial cell-based collodion macroporous activated charcoal adsorbent can effectively remove middle molecular weight range molecules in patients. A novel hemoperfusion device based on collodion membrane macroporous synthetic resin effectively removes cytokines and recovery in COVID-19 patients. This has been approved as an emergency treatment for COVID-19 in China, Europe, and Canada. A recent nanobiotherapeutic containing haemoglobin and up to six times the concentration of red blood cell enzymes: catalase, superoxide dismutase and carbonic anhydrase. In an animal study, this can effectively lower the damaging increase in free radicals and the removal of increased tissue pCO2. This can also help as blood substitute for the severe and critical problem of COVID-19 pandemic donor blood supply crisis. COVID-19 and its variants have resulted in major pandemics, severe sicknesses, and deaths around the world. COVID-19 and its variants has only started less than 3 years ago, and it is even more recently that we know more about its mechanisms, requirements, prevention, and treatment. The adoption of green technology is imperative to realise sustainable development. Considering the same, this study explores the drivers of Green Innovation (GI) based on the theoretical foundation of the Triple Bottom Line (environmental, social, and economic factors) with the integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) and institutional governance (INST) in Pakistan. This study employs a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) framework on quarterly data from Q1-1996 to Q4-2019. The results reveal that positive shocks in human capital (HCI) instigate GI by 1.05%, while negative shock undermines GI by 0.93%. Similarly, positive shocks in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions increase GI by 0.63%, while any negative shock undermines GI by 0.01%. On the other hand, positive shock in ICT leads to 0.55% advanced GI; however, this effect turned stronger in negative shocks, which leads to reduced GI by 0.78% in the long-run. These results confirm the asymmetricity because positive and negative shocks in HCI, CO2 emissions, and ICT instigated GI differently. Finally, INST and GDP contribute to enhancing GI by 0.12% and 1.69%, respectively. The results indicate that the Pakistan government should improve institutional governance, adapt, and focus on sustainable practices with ICT integration to promote green technologies. Carbon dioxide (CO2) Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is an indispensable part of the carbon removal technologies to achieve carbon neutrality for China. Our study focuses on China's CCUS pathways, and draws out three key conclusions: (1) in terms of the greenhouse gases emission reductions required to achieve carbon neutrality and based on current technology projections, the CO2 emission reductions to be achieved by CCUS are 0.6 ∼ 1.4 billion tonnes and 1 ∼ 1.8 billion tonnes in 2050 and 2060, respectively; (2) from the perspective of source-sink matching in China, the emission reduction potential provided by CCUS can basically meet the demand of carbon neutrality target (0.6 ∼ 2.1 billion tonnes of CO2); (3) with the development of technologies, the cost of CCUS in China has a great potential to be reduced in the future. It is expected that by 2030, the technical cost of the whole CCUS process (according to 250 kilometers transportation) in China will be 310 ∼ 770 Chinese Yuan per tonne of CO2, and by 2060, it will gradually drop to 140 ∼ 410 Chinese Yuan per tonne of CO2. This study aimed to address the challenges and strategies to determine the critical rate of CO2 injection into a carbonate depleted gas field. In this research, the critical rate is the maximum allowable injection rate before formation damage initiation. The cause of formation damage could be due to in-situ mobilization or trapping of migratory fines resulting in plugging the flow path. This study performed a thorough investigation of a different rock-fluid system to evaluate the safe injection limit, as the critical rate is different for each rock-fluid system. The geochemical effect of CO2 injection toward carbonate formation was also investigated in this research. Other than that, the porosity and permeability changes due to CO2-brine-rock multiphase flow characteristics were considered to understand the feasibility of CO2 sequestration into carbonate formation. This research discussed experimental design to mimic the CO2 injection scenario of CO2 into carbonate depleted gas field. Therefore, several core flooding experiments were conducted under reservoir conditions using representative native cores, CO2, and synthetic formation brine. Abrupt changes in differential pressure (ΔP), analysis of effluent collected after CO2 multi-rate flow, and pH reading are the key indicators to consider that the condition has reached a critical rate. The experimental result demonstrated the existence of fines migration, scale formation, and salt precipitation after the core was subjected to supercritical CO2 multi-rate flow. Natural gas (NG) has many advantages of clean fuels and can replace gasoline in spark ignition (SI) engines. However, it comes with disadvantages such as low energy density. Hydrogen blended NG can improve the fuel characteristics. Ignition timing also plays an important role in engine performance, especially at lean limits. Experiments were conducted for performance and emissions with hydrogen-compressed natural gas (HCNG) blends in a spark ignition (SI) engine with fixed ignition timing. HCNG blends with 0–15% hydrogen were tested with maximum brake torque (MBT) spark timing 30° before top dead center (BTDC) ignition. Significant reduction of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrocarbons (HC) along with improved break thermal efficiency was observed with higher hydrogen fraction. There was no significant benefit in indicated thermal efficiency or NOx reduction by using MBT ignition. Recurring hot head-out water immersion (HOWI) enhances peripheral vascular function and cerebral blood velocity during non-immersion conditions. However, it is unknown if an acute bout of hot HOWI alters cerebrovascular function. Using two experimental studies, we tested the hypotheses that dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) are improved during an acute bout of hot (HOT; 39 °C) vs. thermoneutral (TN; 35 °C) HOWI. Eighteen healthy participants (eight females) completed the dCA study, and 14 participants (6 females) completed the CVR study. Both studies consisted of two randomized (TNdCA vs. HOTdCA; TNCVR vs. HOTCVR) 45minute HOWI visits. Middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAvmean) was continuously recorded. dCA was assessed using a respiratory impedance device and analyzed via transfer gain and phase in the low-frequency band. CVR was assessed using stepped hypercapnia. Assessments were completed PRE and 30 minutes into HOWI. Values are reported as a change (Δ) from PRE (mean ± SD). There were no differences at PRE for either study. ΔMCAvmean was greater in TNdCA (TNdCA: 4 ± 4 vs. HOTdCA: -3 ± 5 cm/s; P < 0.01) and TNCVR (TNCVR: 5 ± 4 vs. HOTCVR: -1 ± 6 cm/s; P < 0.01) during HOWI. ΔGain was greater in HOTdCA during HOWI (TNdCA: -0.09 ± 0.15 vs. HOTdCA: 0.10 ± 0.17 cm/s/mmHg; P = 0.04). ΔPhase (P > 0.84) and ΔCVR (P > 0.94) were not different between conditions. Carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1) have been studied for decades and have been classified as a superfamily of enzymes which includes, up to date, eight gene families or classes indicated with the Greek letters α, β, γ, δ, ζ, η, θ, ι. This versatile enzyme superfamily is involved in multiple physiological processes, catalysing a fundamental reaction for all living organisms, the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and a proton. Recently, the ι-CA (LCIP63) from the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana and a bacterial ι-CA (BteCAι) identified in the genome of Burkholderia territorii were characterised. The recombinant BteCAι was observed to act as an excellent catalyst for the physiologic reaction. Very recently, the discovery of a novel ι-CAs (COG4337) in the eukaryotic microalga Bigelowiella natans and the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC7120 has brought to light an unexpected feature for this ancient superfamily: this ι-CAs was catalytically active without a metal ion cofactor, unlike the previous reported ι-CAs as well as all known CAs investigated so far. This review reports recent investigations on ι-CAs obtained in these last three years, highlighting their peculiar features, and hypothesising that possibly this new CA family shows catalytic activity without the need of metal ions. CO2 accumulation is inducing an effect of global warming. Adsorption using solid sorbents is proving as an effective strategy for CO2 capture and reuse. The aim of this study was to develop amino-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles by depositing various amines through co-precipitation or impregnation-sonication. Structural characteristics were studied through SEM, BET and XRD analyses, evidencing coarse particles with low crystallinity and surface areas of 100–150 m2 g−1, while FT-IR confirmed CO2 interacting with substrate. The load of functional group, particles stability, and CO2 sorption capacity were assessed through elemental and thermogravimetric analysis. It was found that loads of functional groups ranging from 1.6 to 6.1 wt.%. were deposited, and most samples showed sound stability up to 100°C. Sorption capacities were in the range 0.2–1.5 g gNH2−1, the highest being 1.46 g gNH2−1 for ɛ-aminocaproic acid. Such sample also exhibited good recyclability, with a performance drop of 11% after many cycles. CO2 uptake decreased with increasing temperature in the range 25–45°C, suggesting a chemical bond between CO2 and amines. Amino functionalized particles could thus be an interesting solution for CO2 capture and utilization thanks to fast kinetics, recyclability, and ease of separation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Economic diversification transforms an economy to utilize multiple sectors for growth. The problem is that developing countries have been slow in shifting away from mineral-energy complex-based development. However, sector-heterogeneity either reduces or increases exposure and/or adaptive capabilities to greenhouse gas emissions. The objective of the study was to ascertain the relationship between economic diversification and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in South Africa. The study utilized the autoregressive distributed lag-error correction model (ARDL-ECM) and included macroeconomic variables such as gross domestic product (GDP), population, foreign direct investment and trade balance. The Tress Index of 10 industries was utilized to measure economic diversification. Annual data from 1993 to 2020 were used in the study. The study found that in the short run, CO2 Granger caused economic diversity but in the long run, there was no association. Population also had a long- and short-run relationship with economic diversification, while CO2 emissions had a long- and short-run relationship with GDP. The study concludes that there is a unidirectional causality between economic diversification and CO2 emissions in the short run and no relationship in the long run. Due to industrial development, the volume of carbon dioxide (CO2) is rapidly increasing.. Several techniques have been used to eliminate CO2 from the output gas mixtures. One of these methods is CO2 capturing by ionic liquids (ILs). Computational models for estimating the CO2 solubility in ILS is of utmost importance. In this research, a white box model in the form of a mathematical correlation using the largest data bank in literature is presented by the group method of data handling (GMDH). This research investigates the application of GMDH intelligent method as a powerful computational approach for predicting CO2 solubility in different ionic liquids with temperature lower and upper than 324 K. In this regard, 4726 data points including the solubility of CO2 in 60 ILs were used for model development Moreover, seven different ionic liquids were selected to perform the external test. To evaluate the validity and efficiency of the suggested model, regression analysis was implemented on the actual and estimated target values. As a result, a proper fit between the experimental and predicted data was obtained and presented by various figures and statistical parameters. It is also worth noting that the predicted negative values in the proposed models are considered zero. Also, the results of the established correlation were compared to other proposed models exist in the literature of ionic liquids. The terminal form of the models suggested by GMDH approach and obtained based on temperature are two simple mathematical correlations by exerting input parameters of temperature (T), pressure (P), critical temperature (Tc), critical pressure (Pc) and, acentric factor (ω) which does not suffer from the black box property of other neural network algorithms. The model suggested in this work, would be a promising one which can act as an efficient predictor for CO2 solubility estimation in ILs and is capable of being used in different industries. Estimation of emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) is becoming an established part of assessing sustainability within environmental impact assessment (EIA). However, a comparative study of 25 environmental impact statements (EISs) to analyse the practice of accounting for emissions during the EIA process suggests that consideration of the effects of development on emissions of GHG is poorly understood. The extent to which assessment is actually carried out is also inconsistent and sporadically implemented. A key indicator appears to be the varying and sometimes contradictory use of technical terminology, particularly of the term ‘carbon’ and its similar phraseology. This paper provides a critical evaluation of the differing terminology that is applied to GHG assessments undertaken as part of EIA process and explores the effect that misuse of these terms could have on an impact EIS. Both adult and juvenile thrips (Thrips tabaci) reared on leeks (Allium ampeloprasum) were very susceptible to the effects of ethyl formate. Complete control was achieved at concentrations as low as 2.7 g/m³ after 2 h. Treatment of thrips-infested onions (Allium cepa) with 160 g/m³ of an aerosol containing 16.7% ethyl formate by weight in carbon dioxide killed nearly all adult thrips immediately after treatment. An assessment 9 days after treatment indicated that eggs had not been killed by the treatment. No residues of ethyl formate were detected in onions collected 1-28 days after treatment following application of two very high dose rates (236 and 756 g/m³). Ethyl formate had no effect on skin colour, onion firmness, or incidence of rots, and no visual signs of phytotoxicity were evident on onions treated with concentrations up to 324 g/m³. The highest dose of ethyl formate tested on eggs (27 g/m³ for 2 h) in small pieces of leek gave marginally lower nymph counts than the untreated control. Ethyl acetate at rates of 94 and 120 g/m³ significantly reduced the numbers of emerging nymphs compared with those emerging from an untreated control. This fumigant is a similar compound to ethyl formate but may be less phytotoxic. Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are metalloenzymes responsible for the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate, a fundamental reaction involved in various physiological and pathological processes. In the last decades, CAs have been considered as important drug targets for different pathologies such as glaucoma, epilepsy and cancer. The design of potent and selective inhibitors has been an outstanding goal leading to the discovery of new drugs. Among the different strategies developed to date, the design of carbohydrate-based CA inhibitors (CAIs) has emerged as a versatile tool in order to selectively target CAs. The insertion of a glycosyl moiety as a hydrophilic tail in sulfonamide, sulfenamide, sulfamate or coumarin scaffolds allowed the discovery of many different series of sugar-based CAIs, with relevant inhibitory results. The present study aims to investigate the impact of income inequality and economic growth on carbon dioxide (CO2) emission through the moderating role of innovation in China at national and regional levels. To test the hypothesised relationships, this study took the data from 1995 to 2015 and employed panel estimation. Findings of the whole analysis show that income inequality and economic growth influence CO2 emission in China. Moreover, technological innovation moderates the proposed link. Remittances inflow plays a significant role in promoting the economic welfare of a country; it has a multidimensional effect on the economy and links with the carbon emissions. This study examines the possible asymmetric transmissions from remittances to carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) in China using time series data from 1980 to 2014. The Non-linear NARDL method is employed to check the longrun asymmetric relationship between remittances inflow and carbon emissions. The findings show that a positive shock in remittances causes an increase in CO2 emissions, while a negative shock in remittances causes a decrease in CO2 emissions. The results support the existence of an asymmetric cointegrating relationship between remittances and CO2 emissions in both short run and the long run. The NARDL dynamic multiplier graph assumes that positive remittances shocks are highe compared to the negative remittances shocks. It suggests that policymakers in China should consider remittances as a policy instrument especially designing strategies and policies related to sustainable environmental quality in the long run. Grasslands are distributed globally across various topographies. In non-flat grasslands, aspect (the direction that a slope faces) influences the amounts of radiation and consequent effects on temperature and soil moisture, all of which are important drivers of plant growth. Aspect is important not only in hill and mountain areas but also in more moderate topographies such as plateaux, steppes and prairies. Here, we tested the aboveground growth response to an important driver of climate change – elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) – of two temperate grass species grown under simulated north (unshaded) and south (shaded) aspects. We used trellis-like structures to create the appropriate radiation regimes; irrigation ensured that only radiation and hence soil temperatures were different. We utilised the long-running New Zealand Free-Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) experiment and established turves of Lolium perenne L. and Agrostis capillaris L. The aboveground dry matter (DM) was regularly harvested over 10 months. For the main effects, there was no overall response to CO2 but Agrostis produced about 50% more DM than Lolium while the north aspect produced about 15% more DM than the south. There was an interaction between CO2 level and aspect: for both species production was about 20% greater under eCO2 on the north aspect but had no effect on the south aspect. Given that a large proportion of the world's grasslands is on slopes, this aspect × CO2 interaction causes us to reconsider the up-scaling of CO2 responses from FACE experiments that have been universally carried out on flat terrain. There are over 50,000 telecommunication base transceiver stations (BTS) operating on conventional diesel generators across Nigeria, giving rise to a high operational cost and emission of Greenhouse gases which can be minimized by the adoption of greener energy generation. Presented in this study, is an analysis of the techno-economic and emission impact of a stand-alone hybrid energy system designed for base transceiver stations (BTS) in the Nigerian telecom industry. Using various performance criteria the feasibility of adopting hybrid photovoltaic-diesel generator and battery (PV/DG/Battery) system is analyzed under two different diesel pump price regimes. In all, it is observed that all BTS locations across the six geopolitical zones could adopt PV/battery/DG hybrid renewable energy system in place of the diesel generator (DG) which is, presently, the main technology being used across the BTSs. Besides its economic advantages over the diesel generator, HRES configurations also performed better with respect to diesel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In view of the combustion characteristics of annular chamber of micro gas turbine, a planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique was used to investigate the methane/air premixed turbulent multiple flames in the annular combustor and the effect of CO2 on the characteristic parameters of flame structure was further discussed. The results show that the distribution of the OH radicals exhibits a ring structure with flame lift and bifurcation phenomena. The instantaneous and average image of OH-PLIF reveals that the multiple flames have the common characteristics of turbulent and laminar premixed flame structure. The quantitative analysis of the characteristic parameters of flame structure shows that the increase of CO2 concentration, the flame premixed conical structure is stretched, the overall flame chemistry reaction area is reduced and the intensity of local combustion is weakened; The Coanda effect causes the flame to bend towards the inner wall, and the relative bending of the outer flame increases as well as the flame angle. Three soluble hyperbranched polyazomethines containing oligosiloxane end group HBP-PAZ-SiOn were successfully synthesized. HBP-PAZ-SiOns were used as modifiers of ethyl cellulose (EC) and polysulfone (PS) membranes. Blend membranes, HBP-PAZ-SiOn/EC and HBP-PAZ-SiOn/PS were prepared by blending the THF solution of HBP-PAZ-SiOn with ethanol solution of EC and dichloromethane solution of PS, respectively. Surprisingly, the permeabilities for CO2 of the blend membranes were more than 15-16 times higher than those of pure EC and PS membranes without any drop of pemselectivity to N2. This unusual improvement has been achieved by both enhancement of diffusivity for carbon dioxide and nitrogen by the oligosiloxane groups and enhancement of affinity of the amino groups with carbon dioxide at the end groups of HBP-PAZ-SiOn. The article presents the author's view on the development of meteorological knowledge about Antarctica. He says that the question of world-wide pollution is a pressing one and promises to become even more serious and the increase of carbon dioxide, DDT and lead in Antarctica indicates that it is becoming contaminated by man-made pollutants. He emphasizes that it is time to establish stations to measure all aspects of this contamination in order to provide a base line against which to compare future conditions.

The rapid increase in carbon dioxide levels in seawater is causing ocean acidification and is expected to have significant effects on marine life. To explore the ability of the harpacticoid copepodTigriopus japonicusto adapt to an increased concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) in seawater, we compared the survival rates of adult and nauplius stages at 400, 1000, and 1550 ppmpCO2over a 14-day period. The survival rate ofT. japonicusdramatically decreased over time with increase inpCO2concentration. At 1550 ppm, the survival rate showed a decrease of more than 20% at the end of the experimental period over that at 400 ppm. Furthermore, the survival rate decreased by a greater amount at all concentrations in nauplii than in adults, with a greater effect in wild-collected specimens than in culture-derived individuals. We studied the effects of temperature, carbon dioxide and abscisic acid on mung bean (Vigna radiata). Plants were grown under 26/22°C or 32/28°C (16 h light/8 h dark) at 400 or 700 μmol mol−1CO2and received ABA application of 0 or 100 μl (10 μg) every other day for three weeks, after eight days of initial growth, in growth chambers. We measured 24 parameters. As individual factors, in 16 cases temperature; in 8 cases CO2; in 9 cases ABA; and as interactive factors, in 4 cases, each of temperature × CO2, and CO2 × ABA; and in 2 cases, temperature × ABA were significant. Higher temperatures increased growth, aboveground biomass, growth indices, photochemical quenching (qP) and nitrogen balance index (NBI). Elevated CO2increased growth and aboveground biomass. ABA decreased growth, belowground biomass, qP and flavonoids; increased shoot/root mass ratio, chlorophyll and NBI; and had little role in regulating temperature–CO2effects. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) conjugates with a range of nanocarbons (NCs) have been prepared, and their performances with regard to carbon dioxide absorption and liberation are compared. PEI-functionalised multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PEI-MWNTs) prepared by the reaction of branched PEI (25,000 Da) with F-MWNTs in the presence of pyridine, showed a lower CO2capacity at 25 °C (5 wt%, 1.1 mmol CO2/g adsorbent) as compared to PEI-SWNTs (9.2 wt%, 2.1 mmol CO2/g adsorbent), consistent with the interior layers of the MWNTs adding weight to the base NC without adding functionality. PEI-functionalised graphite/graphene was prepared by three routes: fluorinated graphite intercalation compounds, prepared from natural graphite powder, were reacted with PEI in EtOH with pyridine; exfoliated natural graphite powder was reacted with Boc–Phe(4-N3)–OH, and subsequently PEI to give PEI-Phe(4-N-G); graphite oxide (GO) was reacted with PEI in the presence of NEt3to give PEI-GO. The CO2capacity of PEI-GO at 25 °C (8 wt%, 1.8 mmol CO2/g adsorbent) was comparable to that of PEI-SWNTs making GO a valid and cheaper alternative to the SWNT scaffold. The temperature of CO2desorption of the PEI-NCs was 75 °C, providing a lower energy load for regeneration compared to current amine-based scrubbing units. Peatlands surrounding Hudson and James Bays form the second largest peatland complex in the world and contain major stores of soil carbon (C). This study utilized a transect of eight ombrotrophic peat cores from remote regions of central and northern Ontario to quantify the magnitude and rate of C accumulation since peatland initiation and for the past 2000 calendar years before present (2 ka). These new data were supplemented by 17 millennially resolved chronologies from a literature review covering the Boreal Shield, Hudson Plains, and Taiga Shield bordering Hudson and James Bays. Peatlands initiated in central and northern Ontario by 7.8 ka following deglaciation and isostatic emergence of northern areas to above sea level. Total C accumulated since inception averaged 109.7 ± (std. dev.) 36.2 kg C m-2. Approximately 40% of total soil C has accumulated since 2 ka at an average apparent rate of 20.2 ± 6.9 g C m-2 yr-1. The 2 ka depths correlate significantly and positively with modern gridded climate estimates for mean annual precipitation, mean annual air temperature, growing degree-days > 0 °C, and photosynthetically active radiation integrated over days > 0 °C. There are significantly shallower depths in permafrost peatlands. Vertical peat accumulation was likely constrained by temperature, growing season length, and photosynthetically active radiation over the last 2 ka in the Hudson Bay Lowlands and surrounding regions. The Hudson Bay Lowlands (HBL) constitute a globally significant carbon pool; the paleoecological record provides an opportunity to investigate long-term drivers of change in carbon accumulation and related changes in vegetation. We present a Holocene record from the Victor Fen site (VM-3-3) in Ontario's HBL to reconstruct vegetation history, quantify rates of carbon accumulation, and determine the role of paleoclimatic drivers. Pollen analysis indicates initiation of peat accumulation over a mineral substrate, accompanied by relatively rapid rates of carbon accumulation, following emergence from the Tyrrell Sea ∼6900 yrs BP. The earliest vegetation assemblage consisted of a tidal marsh, quickly succeeding to a Typha marsh, then a poor fen dominated by Sphagnum and Cyperaceae by 6400 yrs BP. Rapid rates of isostatic uplift at the time likely contributed to these changes. Once established, this fen community persisted without major vegetation change until the most recent century, when the abundance of shrub and Cyperaceae pollen increased, suggesting increasingly minerotrophic conditions. Average rate of long-term carbon accumulation (LORCA) for the whole record (mean = 22.8 g C m-2 yr-1) is similar to other northern peatlands, and higher than the Holocene average for an adjacent bog. Increased precipitation after ∼2400 yrs BP may have contributed to the higher LORCA reconstructed for the late Holocene, but the increased precipitation did not coincide with any apparent changes in vegetation as inferred from pollen assemblages.
