In 2017, far-right mobilization and demonstrations in the United States were at the highest levels since the 1980s and 90s. This coincided with a marked increase in propaganda campaigns in neighborhoods and across college campuses. Racial activists renewed efforts to rebrand extreme positions, soften racist rhetoric, and grow the movement. The purpose of this case study was to explore the rhetorical content of the propaganda created by one white supremacist. This study contributes to a growing body of literature on far-right propaganda through an examination of common themes, and a comparison of the framing techniques and rhetorical strategies used by other white supremacists. Drawing on higher education regionalism, this paper explores international branch campus (IBC) initiatives undertaken by one of the largest Russian IBC-exporting institutions, the Lomonosov Moscow State University (LMSU). To date, very little is known about higher education (HE) export-import between the post-Soviet countries. This qualitative inquiry critically examines the Soviet legacy of LMSU IBCs to understand their origins, purposes, and utility as a form of HE export. This paper sheds light on (1) the similarities and differences between six LMSU IBCs and (2) discourses used to rationalise the establishment of LMSU branch campuses. The findings from this paper suggest that LMSU IBCs are established (a) to promote the Russian HE model, (b) to strengthen political and cultural ties with neighbouring countries, and (c) to bolster LMSU's image and brand appeal in the region. Increasingly, student assessments of courses are being conducted online as opposed to administered in class. A growing body of research compares response rates and course ratings of courses evaluated online versus on paper. The present study extends this research by comparing student course assessments before and after the University of South Florida made online evaluations mandatory for all courses. This change only directly affected courses taught on-campus, as online courses were already being assessed online. However, we examine the effect of this change on courses taught on-campus and online, because we expect this change in policy to have differential effects. We hypothesise that by making online assessments mandatory for all courses, online assessments went from a novel method of evaluation to the norm; and, therefore, increased response rates for online courses, but had the opposite effect for on-campus courses. The 2019 Anti-Extradition Bill movement (Anti-ELAB) in Hong Kong peaked the tactical radicalization of the city's recent protest history. At the same time, it signified unprecedented tactical reconciliation between moderate and radical protestors that maintained strong movement momentum and a high degree of solidarity for a long period. An ethics of solidarity was successfully formulated to illuminate deliberative practices among participants. However, the change of protest spatiality and repertoire from wildcat protesting to temporary occupation at a university campus altered the dynamics of protestors and weakened deliberative communication. This paper illustrates the struggles and learning curves of students who suffered deliberative deficit in the interaction with other protestors. This paper argues that the occupation, despite its contested nature, offered informal experiential learning of civic engagement for the students to their political literacy and civic mentality towards social movement under the intense setting of real politics. Motherhood is often positioned as incompatible with further education, and various cohort studies have revealed the many ways in which mothers are discouraged from and disadvantaged in higher education. Guided by role theory, we investigated the experiences of more than 1300 'PhD mums' from across the world as they simultaneously navigate the roles of doctoral researcher and mother (or mother-like role). Using a mixed-methods survey design, qualitative and quantitative results were analysed to reveal the contradictions and complexities of the PhD mum experience, with motherhood both straining and enhancing the doctoral journey. Motherhood may place considerable strains on doctoral researchers, including on their ability to conduct and write-up their research. These strains are exacerbated by inequitable and gendered role expectations, finite resources, and limited support, often at the expense of doctoral researchers' physical and mental well-being. However, it is not all negative, and PhD mums can bring a range of skills and attributes that are valuable to individual doctoral studies as well as doctoral programmes and institutions more broadly. The benefits also extend to the PhD mums themselves, their families, and their communities. This paper challenges unfounded assumptions about the commitment and ability of mothers to succeed in doctoral education, but also raises serious concerns about the role of institutions in perpetuating social inequalities while espousing commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion. The Cuajimalpa campus of the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM) is located in the western region of Mexico City. In 2016, its global average population (students, faculty and staff) was around 2750 people. Campus policies include sustainability as one of its main aims. To evaluate and eventually reduce the environmental impact of the campus, its greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory was assessed and the carbon footprint was calculated, using the GHG protocol (GHGP): Scope 1: direct GHG emissions; Scope 2: indirect GHG emissions; and Scope 3: other indirect GHG emissions, on a calendar year basis. Scope 1 includes mobile and stationary sources and leakage of refrigerants; Scope 2 includes electrical energy usage; Scope 3 includes consumption of paper, food, water, gases, cleaning products, solvents, wastewater treatment, municipal and hazardous wastes and academic travel. In 2016, the campus produced around 3000 tons of CO2 equivalent, with Scope 1, 2 and 3 accounting for 4%, 24% and 72%, respectively. Emissions analysis by activity indicated 51% for commuting; 24% for electricity usage; 14% for academic travel; 11% for other activities. The inventory will aid the establishment of policies for reduction and mitigation of GHG, resulting in environmental and potential economic benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the concept of translocality, of being 'simultaneously situated' in more than one place, in the context of 'distance' education in the digital university. The author works with the concept of critical time to propose an additional term, transtemporality, to also recognise the multiple times and temporalities engaged and interwoven in digitally connected spaces of work and study. The paper draws on interview material from an institutional case study of expansion in digital education, paying particular attention to student locations in time and space, arguing that recognising the shifting time-space of the campus is essential to supporting and teaching growing numbers of distance and part-time students. The author proposes that, rather than digital connections being viewed as a form of 'reaching out' from the university campus to the wider world, the digital university might be considered, in its translocal and transtemporal form, as an opening up of the idea of the university; embodied and imagined through strong connections across multiple locations, times and temporalities. International higher education is the third largest export industry in Australia. Student attrition is an area of concern in higher education institutions. Most research undertaken so far has focused on domestic student attrition in Australia and globally. This study focuses on an Australian university to examine the causes of international students' attrition after their first year of study. It reveals that since 2018, growing numbers of international students have withdrawn from the subject university at the metropolitan campus to enrol in private colleges attracted by lower tuition fees for similar degree qualifications. The paper raises questions about the role of education agents in such student mobility and risks related to academic standards and quality in private colleges. The paper also raises questions about risks to quality and competitiveness in universities that have not sufficiently considered the academic and personal needs of international students. Universities are increasingly recognized as spaces and cultures where gendered and sexualized harassment is endemic. This article pays close attention to the manifestations of sexualized behaviours in a campus university in the UK, examining some of the ways in which formations of masculinity are encouraged and reproduced through university structures, processes and aesthetics. The discussion draws on data generated by a creative project utilizing film-based materials as a prompt for collaborative reflections. Bringing together staff and students from across the university in a creative space enabled diverse experiences to be shared and produced rich and detailed insights across disciplinary and generational differences. The paper argues that such creative interventions are a vital form of feminist pedagogy offering a powerful resource for future work in this increasingly urgent field of study. The paper discusses results of the long-term monitoring of a full-scale pilot installation of a modular tray-based blue roof (BR) system for the control of the runoff from the roof terrace of a building in the campus of the University of Catania (Italy). The BR was installed in one catchment of the rooftop while another symmetrical catchment was left unmodified and monitored to allow comparison. Results of the analysis have shown average 54% retention efficiency and 72% detention efficiency of the BR. Comparatively, the BR always overperformed the conventional roof, with mean 34% runoff reduction and mean 60% flow peak attenuation. This article explores the regional development role of university campuses in less-advantaged peripheral regions with attention to the role of students. In the international literature, regional campuses are theorized as playing three types of regional development roles: developing regional human capital, contributing to regional innovation and supporting regional community development. A case study of regional campuses in the Australian context identifies that current policy framing overlooks the innovative potential of regional campuses and their students. Recent research conducted on campus learning environments suggests that more learning takes place outside of class time than ever before; thus, students seek alternative learning spaces in campus settings. This research focuses on open spaces within university campuses, defined as 'campus open spaces', as alternative learning settings and aims at answering the following questions: 1) How is learning experienced in campus open spaces? 2) What are the design attributes of learning in campus open spaces? 3) Do design attributes significantly affect learning in campus open spaces? The paper presents an exploratory inquiry conducted with 60 students from the campus of Middle East Technical University, Turkey. By using qualitative and quantitative techniques, the paper validates that learning is experienced not only in formal learning spaces but also in informal open spaces. Drawing upon contemporary academic debates around comparative urbanism combined with theoretical post-colonial re-orientations, this paper focuses on young women's spatial politics and embodied practices designed to pursue gender equality in Delhi. It focuses on the Pinjra Tod ('Break the Hostel Cages') movement, a collective of female students that engages with prefigurative feminist politics to challenge paternalistic logics of surveillance, gendered spatial-temporal control, moral policing and securitisation on university campuses. The Collective works to create spaces of protest, recognition and reflection in order to demand their rights to the city, to roam freely, organise, and dwell in spaces of gender equality. Studies of time and higher education emphasize how macro-level changes influence everyday university practices and how time is experienced and perceived in various ways. This paper adds to these studies by looking at time as infrastructure. We explore how students relate to time and unpack the challenges caused by the temporal structure of higher education. The analysis presents material from ethnographic fieldwork carried out with students following three Bachelor's programmes. Treating time as infrastructure directs attention to the ways in which temporal structures serve to both enable and constrain practices. We found that the students related to several temporal horizons and that these required different paces, so that the horizons sometimes clashed. However, students also adopted strategies disrupting the pace and direction of the scheduled time, using cracks and openings in the temporal infrastructure to create time for immersion and reflection. This qualitative study investigates how first-generation undergraduate students of Color at a historically white institution in the U.S. make sense and process the university's mission, especially in relation to the theoretical frameworks of intersectionality and post-subjectivity. U.S. universities are often structured on market-driven ideologies. They do not necessarily deeply take into account the experiences of their first-generation students of Color to the extent that could be observed in the institution's mission and goals. In this paper, we interacted with data while thinking with theory, philosophy, and concept as a method. Through these interactions, we gained insights about the lived experiences of first-generation undergraduate students of Color and how they perceive themselves to either be represented or not, within their institution's mission. Studies like this are needed because an institution's mission communicates central philosophies to stakeholders, and a clear mission statement is warranted to ensure that first-generation students of Color feel a sense of belongingness and affinity to their campuses. Objective Sexual and dating violence (SV/DV) on college campuses is a pervasive problem with far-reaching implications for public health. This paper describes the development and evaluation of a widely disseminated SV/DV primary prevention program, the Red Flag Campaign (RFC). Participants and Methods: An online survey was administered to 203 freshmen at a southeastern US university, of whom 82% reported exposure to the RFC in the previous month. Results: College students exposed to the RFC reported greater efficacy for intervening as a bystander compared to those students who were not exposed. These results held when looking at exposure to RFC messages specifically, but not RFC events. Conclusions: This evaluation offers preliminary evidence that the RFC is effective at increasing determinants of prosocial bystander behavior, the enactment of which could reduce SV/DV on college campuses. This paper examines how digital technologies shape the use of space in universities with a particular focus on the implications on organisational level. In order to maximise the potential of new technologies, I argue that universities will have to reconsider their use of space. This includes addressing the impact of new technologies on pedagogies, on facilities and on students. One of the challenges facing those responsible for service provision in universities is ensuring that service is provided at the right point in the organisation. Service delivery points can exist at the school/department level, faculty/division level or central unit/university wide level. This does not always follow organisational logic, common sense, the interests of stakeholders, or an organisational service strategy or plan. Many universities have established 'one-stop shops' for student services. These have taken many forms and include a range of services, from student administration and student support services, to information technology support and cashier/student financial services. Different management arrangements, including the use of service agreements, have also been used across the sector in Australia. There are additional levels of complexity caused by multiple campuses, differences in the composition of the student body, differences in teaching arrangements, organisational structures and resource arrangements. This paper focuses on student administration and support services. It analyses a range of current models in universities and provides some suggestions for assessing the logic of the models, using a set of underlying principles to help make decisions. The aim of this paper is to explore Appadurai's ideas of global cultural flows in the context of the internationalization of higher education in China. Studies on the internationalization of higher education have increased with the expansion of international activities on university campuses; however, more theoretical analysis in the field is necessary, especially in less studied and rapidly developing countries such as China. Appadurai's theorization may provide new insights into the field because of its background in the changes transforming international student flows: intensified migration and mass mediation. The research data of the paper consist of previous literature and statistical data. The paper focuses first on analysing the general ideas of Appadurai's model and second on one of the scapes of the model, the ideoscape. The paper suggests that Appadurai's ideas of global cultural flows, when expanded through further research and theorization, provide a heuristic framework for analysing the internationalization of higher education in China. The continuing significance of the nation state and the locality of international actions characterize the internationalization of higher education. The global rise of ‘neo-populism’, culminating in the election of the populist Republican candidate Donald Trump to the US presidency, has been accompanied by a notable backlash and resistance to what has been categorised as governing/dominating ‘elites’, including HE academic institutions. Populist critiques centre on a perceived climate of censorship on campus in the name of ‘political correctness’. In this paper I examine some of the arguments put forward by proponents and detractors in these debates, utlising some examples from empirical data from a study of online student newspaper posts in 2016 and 2017 from campuses in the US and the UK. In doing so I will be exploring the ways in which the debates are underpinned by distinct gendered, classed and ‘raced’ discourses that are linked not only to differing conceptions of ‘truth’ but also the nature and purpose of learning in the university itself. Universities exert effort and expense in designing buildings to fit the current ontology and meet the perceived needs of society. This is not new – historically, entire campuses were designed to manifest pedagogical and social ideals, like the "academical village" (Coulson, Roberts and Taylor, 2015) of Thomas Jefferson's imagination.1 Yet many campuses evolve through less deliberate means, repurposing existing sites and structures. This paper analyses one such site: a campus formed post-war when a disused air force base was adapted to house an expanding School of Engineering 1948–1969. The article takes an image-led approach, analysing a series of photographs found in an institutional archive which capture the final years of this temporary, repurposed university campus. Visual sources like these encourage reflection on material and spatial dimensions of institutional histories, enlarging our understanding of the relationship between place and knowledge, things and ideas. The images of this campus also make a case for "making do" in the university – highlighting the creative possibilities for transient sites and repurposing existing built structures. At universities worldwide, creating a 'smart campus' is gaining significance. This is a response to the increasingly dynamic use of the campus and the pressure on resources: energy, financial and human resources. The university community has become more mobile, student numbers more unpredictable and funding more uncertain. Consequently, campus strategies focus on resource efficiency and sharing space, requiring investment in management information to improve decision making. The Internet of Things (IoT) can help to provide big data about use patterns: by collecting real-time data on space utilization, users can make better use of current spaces and real estate managers can make better decisions about long-term demand. Furthermore, space utilisation data can be complemented with user feedback data and environmental variables, e.g. noise levels, luminance. In this research we identify the capabilities of existing IoT applications through a literature study. Literature also suggests that information from IoT applications is not utilized in organisational decision-making processes. Through four case studies we analyse these decision-making processes and identify the process-level requirements to make strategic decisions in campus management. The purpose of this study is to examine what the Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) designation means to Hispanic college students at a Research One four-year university. This qualitative case study used one-on-one interviews with Hispanic undergraduate and graduate students to explore their experiences and perceptions of what it means to be an HSI and how the HSI designation can affect their collegiate experience. The study was guided by Museus's culturally engaging campus environments model to help identify what strategies can enhance the educational experiences of Hispanic students attending an HSI. The findings of this paper only include data from students of this particular HSI. The overarching themes that emerged include a sense of belonging through campus organizations, the presence of Latina/o/x faculty, and institutional diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transnational education is becoming a popular way for students to earn an attractive credential from a foreign university in emerging education hubs in Asia. In an era where students are staying closer to home for their education, this paper offers insights into the motivations or choice criteria used by students currently enrolled at international branch campuses in Malaysia. Findings from a survey of 218 undergraduate and postgraduate students plus semi-structured qualitative interviews conducted with 18 students indicated that the motivations for studying at an international branch campus are a function of the combined pull–push factors (i.e. institution and academic reputations, marketability of the degree, low tuition fees compared to home institution, low cost of living, safe country for study, similarity of education systems as well as cultural proximity). The study proposes a model of student destination and institution choices based primarily upon ‘push’ factors which apply to international branch campuses in Malaysia. The success of a given university operating in a foreign market is shown to be influenced greatly by the destination's costs, attractiveness attributes, and locational convenience for students. The findings of the paper are especially relevant to developing market policy-makers of higher education in crafting specific management and marketing strategies targeting students to study at international branch campuses, particularly in Malaysia. This paper compares Building Control Virtual Test Bed (BCVTB) and Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) standard to conduct coupled energy modelling and control for academic and research campuses. The intent is to systematically compare BCVTB and FMI. As proof-of-concept demonstration, building energy models of Colorado School of Mines are developed in EnergyPlus and coupled through BCVTB and FMI. The coupled models in BCVTB and FMI represent a virtual campus and they are compared from different perspectives such as simulation runtime, easiness of employing simple if–then–else control, easiness of integrating other programs and feasibility to employ advanced control and optimization. Overall, FMI standard is more promising due to its (a) capability to be programmed in a multithreading manner, (b) capability to be implemented as Gauβ–Seidl and Jacobi methods of loose coupling and (c) higher feasibility to implement advanced control and optimization programs. Contemporary critical scholarship on the university firmly places new discursive and curricular formations within a global context of neoliberal, neoimperial, and neocolonial processes. Recently, some focus has been given to last century's institutionalization of the interdisciplines (e.g. Ethnic Studies, Cultural Studies, Women's Studies) and how the invitation to become a part of the university has mapped onto repressive liberal fantasies of tolerance and inclusion. With this history in mind, this paper begins with the current wave of student protests and how the institutionalization of difference has structured university responses to new formations of critique. We argue that, though de-escalating the politics of knowledge production and legitimation, a new moral economy has emerged in which universities trade on 'good' students who adhere to prescribed performances of critique and villainize the student–activists who threaten the status quo as a means to manage current crises while retaining social legitimacy. Whilst most social and educational research on friendship focuses on children at school, it remains a crucially important factor for students in higher education – and can play a key role in the maintenance, exacerbation or subversion of dominant forms of social inequalities. This paper explores the complexities of such dynamics in relation to friendship and social life at university, utilising data from an in-depth qualitative study of HE students at a UK campus university. Students stressed the importance of friendship for comfort and a sense of 'belonging'. Nevertheless, students describe the continuation of cliques, hierarchies, and exclusions that are more commonly linked to sociality at school. Despite the conception that friendship is an individual experience, it is very much influenced by social positionings such as gender, class, age, and ethnicity – having significant repercussions for students in relation to happiness and wellbeing at university. This paper features an intersectional SWOT analysis conducted at a minority-serving institution within a US Midwest urban setting, to inform the development of harm-reduction services for racial/ethnic sexual gender minority young adults. Our findings revealed the nuances of structured inequities, environmental challenges that are directly linked to access to resources and reduced opportunities to socialize within affirming spaces for racial/ethnic sexual gender minority young adults. The consequence is that those realities influenced their health and wellbeing. Our revelations rationalized the value of culturally-appropriate harm-reduction services and affirmed the distinct realities of racial/ethnic sexual gender minority young adults within the urban university setting. Seat belt use does not only save lives but prevents the severity of injuries in road traffic crashes (RTCs). Vehicle type and usage have been found to influence the use of seat belt in cities like Kumasi, the host of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus. This paper presents a study on an un-obstructive survey of seat belt use by vehicle occupants entering and leaving KNUST campus through the four entrances from 7 to 9 am and 3 to 5 pm on five weekdays. A total of 5489 vehicles with 9542 occupants comprising 5489 drivers, front-right and first back seat and second back seat passengers were observed. The majority of the private and SUV drivers used seat belts. Meanwhile, almost all the commercial drivers did not use seat belts. There is a statistically significant relationship between vehicle type and use and the use of seat belt in KNUST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global rates of type 2 diabetes have doubled since 1980. From a biomedical perspective, the most effective ways to manage type 2 diabetes is through prevention and behaviour change among 'at risk' populations. In the United States, public institutions, such as universities, have increasingly become involved in America's 'war on fat'. This ethnographic study of a campus-based diabetes-prevention programme tracks the links between neoliberalism and instructions for 'health'. It outlines the production of a 'prediabetic' population and changing notions of what constitute health risks. It describes how students come to interpret their bodies with respect to its capacity to be (re)productive. The paper argues that new conditions for higher education exhaust students in ways that ironically jeopardise their ability to be 'productive'. This paper is an ethnographic study of weekly intercultural meetings held at an alternative community space run by a large private university in Tokyo, Japan. Through a ‘team ethnography’, the two authors of this paper illuminate ways in which alternative modes of learning were promoted and institutional boundaries were transgressed and unlearned. We argue that this was made possible by its spatial as well as organisational liminality. We begin with an explanation of Turner's notion of ‘liminality’, which provides our conceptual framework. This is followed by a reflexive account of our methodological approach, which leads us to the ethnographic description of our field site and our engagement in the field. We then analytically situate our ethnography in the larger institutional and social context. Our analysis focuses on the transgression and ‘unlearning’ of professional hierarchies, age-related, ethnic and linguistic boundaries that permeate the mainstream Aoba institution as well as how alternative, experiential learning is promoted at this liminal site. The absence of data regarding UK university students’ sexualities and trans identities has, for too long, rendered lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT+) student communities invisible. This interview-based study aims to explore the experiences of LGBT+ students at a Scottish university, beginning to address this gap in research. This study argues that despite perceptions from staff and prospective students that universities are welcoming to LGBT+ students, and attempts from institutions to comply with equalities legislation, the reality is homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and queer phobia creeps into students’ lives both on and off campus. This has therefore necessitated the student-led provision of exclusively LGBT+ ‘safe spaces’ to allow LGBT+ students to explore and express their identities fearlessly. This paper examines the activity engagement, sequencing and timing of activities for student, faculty and staff commuter groups at the largest university in the Maritime Provinces of Canada. The daily activity patterns of all university community groups are modeled using the classification and regression tree classifier algorithm. The data used for this study are derived from the Environmentally Aware Travel Diary Survey (EnACT) conducted in spring 2016 at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia. Results show that there are significant differences in activity and travel behavior between university population segments and the general population in the region, and between campus groups. For example, students participate in more recreation activities compared to faculty and staff. They also take more trips to and from campus, and are more flexible in their scheduling of trips. The insights gained from this study will provide helpful information for promoting sustainability across university campuses, and for development of campus-based travel demand management strategies. The co-simulation of both urban and building-level models leverages the advantages of both platforms. It better accounts for the localized effects of surrounding buildings, geography and climate conditions while maintaining high-fidelity building systems representation. This paper describes the co-simulation process of the building and urban-scale models of two university campuses in Switzerland using EnergyPlus and CitySim. In the first case study, on-site measured performance data is compared to the co-simulation results. The second case study examines the results of the two engines. The results show that coupling of EnergyPlus with CitySim resulted in a −15.5% and −7.5% impact on cooling consumption and a +6.5% and +4.8% impact on heating use as compared to solo simulations.The co-simulation process was able to better model realistic conditions for heating, but not cooling in one case study. Student residence halls occupy 26% of the total area of a typical university campus in the UK and are directly responsible for 24% of university’s annual CO2emissions. Based on five years measured data, this paper aims to investigate the energy-related environmental and economic performance of electrically heated residence halls in which space heating is provided by two different types of electric heaters, that is, panel heater (PHT) and storage heater (SHT). Secondly, using statistical and machine learning methods, the paper attempts to investigate the relationship between daily electricity consumption and five factors (ambient temperature, solar radiation, relative humidity, wind speed and type of day). Data analysis revealed that electricity consumption of both halls is mainly driven by ambient temperature only, whereas SHT residence has 39% higher annual electricity bill and emits 70% higher CO2emissions on a per square metre basis compared to the PHT residence hall. Studies on campus parking indicate more severe problems and a wider range of characteristics than commercial parking because of limited parking places, special conditions, specific policies and enclosed space on university campuses. Heterogeneous characteristics are usually ignored in analyses of campus parking behavior. In this paper, a mixed logit model is applied to analyze parking choice behavior on a campus using data collected from a stated-preference survey of Tongji University, Shanghai, China. The heterogeneity of individuals with various sociodemographic characteristics is evaluated by interaction terms and random parameters. Comparison between the proposed approach and the conditional logit model shows that the results of the mixed logit model are more interpretable because they are not limited by the independence from irrelevant alternatives assumption. Key factors that have considerable effects on campus parking choices are identified and analyzed. Important regularities are also concluded from elasticity analyses. Finally, the campus is divided into two areas according to the walking distance to a new parking lot, and the modeling results show that area-specific policies should be established because the two areas have quite distinct parking choice features. Taking its inspiration from the name of the recent ‘#FeesMustFall’ movement on South African university campuses, this paper takes stock of the apparent disrepute into which truth, facts and also rationality have fallen in recent times. In the post-truth world, the blurring of borders between truth and deception, truthfulness and dishonesty, and non-fiction and fiction has become a habit – and also an educational challenge. This paper explores one of Dave Brubeck's musical contributions which is seldom discussed in jazz literature: his college jazz tours. I argue here that Brubeck's experiments in musical hybridism, along with his college-themed albums, nationwide tours on college campuses, and personal correspondence with his college-going fan base, not only paved the way for the jazz-classical compositions which defined his early work, but helped recast American colleges into performances spaces for live jazz as well. In essence, this paper reveals how Brubeck's campus tours dramatically altered the California jazz world by tapping into a newfound resource—a new jazz audience—and propelling the broader West Coast jazz movement towards national recognition. In contributing to the development of jazz's relationship with colleges nationwide, Brubeck's college jazz tours provided a critical performance space during the most visible period of California jazz. There has been much concern in the higher education sector recently about the well-being and the safety of slightly more than 200,000 international students studying in higher education in Australia. In recognition of the economic and socio-cultural value of the international student cohort, as well as the significant challenge and risk of studying away from family and friends in a foreign community, CQUniversity has focused for the last two years on improving social integration for over 5000 international students. These students are studying at CQUniversity metropolitan campuses in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney, which are popular destinations for international students. Initiatives to enhance social integration for these students were achieved in partnership with the local community, staff and other students. This paper reports the results of a survey of 446 CQUniversity international students who have had access to these enhanced opportunities for integration as well as a focus-group discussion with staff and students. Results determine the success of these initiatives from the perspective of students as well as key staff and identify further initiatives considered beneficial to supporting continuing social integration. This paper documents the case of the Hospitality Services Management (HSM) subject at Southern Cross University, and the attempts to develop and deliver a robust, current, yet resource-friendly subject to a dynamic, highly-separated group of over 400 students. The HSM unit has adopted a 'converged learning model', what we term a 'scatter-mode approach'. The unit provides alternatives to the usual teaching and learning styles and offers stimulating and constructive independent learning opportunities for students, by collapsing the boundaries between internal and external cohorts, promoting cross-campus communication and utilising on-line teaching and learning technologies. The paper provides an overview of the 'scatter-mode' model adopted by the teaching team and describes the key teaching and learning strategies adopted. Feedback from students has indicated that while assessment activities are challenging they do offer an enriched learning experience. Evaluation of the 'teaching experience' in this unit to date, has identified several positive aspects and particular challenges for staff on the teaching team. Academics across the world face increasing pressure to publish. Research shows that writing retreats have helped by creating dedicated writing time and building collegiality. A new form of 'structured' writing retreat was created to increase its impact by taking a community of practice approach. This paper reports on an evaluation, funded by the British Academy, in which participants were interviewed one year after structured retreat. They reported many changes in their approaches to writing and in their sense of themselves as writers and some of these changes were sustained on return to campus. This paper argues that structured retreat increases learning through participation and helps academics to mainstream writing in their lives and careers. We conclude by suggesting that, since publishing is a mainstream academic activity, it makes sense to mainstream this intervention in academic careers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Historically, business schools have been encouraged to internationalize their programs. The need is still great today. Many scholars have addressed the issues of international curriculum development, particularly at the M.B.A. level. Fewer have examined the problem from a B.B.A. level. This paper specifically examines the internationalization issue at the B.B.A. level through the input from recruiters on college campuses. This study determined that recruiters from different companies respond to international credentials differently. Individual responses to conjoint profiles from 68 recruiters were cluster analyzed. Four separate clusters of recruiter preferences are reported. Variation was found in the type of degree that was preferred, the demand for language training, the value of an international internship and the reaction to study abroad programs. What is the role and purpose of the academic library in the 21st century? Increasingly, this question is being asked on campuses around the country. The thesis of this article is that academic libraries will continue to play a vital role on campus, provided they align their services to the research and discovery missions of their respective institutions. If this is true, a clear definition of the research lifecycle now becomes a strategy roadmap, allowing academic libraries to see the bigger picture as well as the sweep of research services they might offer. The case for crafting the library's strategic plan around the research lifecycle is presented in four parts in this article. In part one, a review of the literature is presented, specifically that having to do with the continuing imperative of academic libraries to practice strategic alignment. An exploration of the increasing importance of the research experience in higher education is then presented in part two, followed by a detailed look at the research lifecycle. Increased efforts to diversify science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in the United States have drastically increased the number of studies offering insight into the experiences of women in STEM programs in higher education. This paper presents a thematic review of the literature regarding their status from 2007 to 2017 including journals, trade magazines, theses, and dissertations. It focuses on areas of recruitment, retention, barriers, and faculty issues. Stereotypes, biases, campus culture, classroom experiences, identity, and sense of belonging are also explored. Vehicle detection is a hotspot in the field of remote sensing image analysis. In particular, campus vehicle detection can assess the density of traffic in an area and provide security for students. The detection accuracy is low for dense vehicle areas or complex background areas. According to the feature of campus vehicle, we propose a multiscale information fusion strategy to construct a novel deep learning framework for campus vehicle detection. This new method based on Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD) combines a lightweight deep neural network MobileNet to extract features. A sub-network composed of multiple convolutional layers is connected to detect and locate the object. This method fuses feature information on multiple levels. When removing overlapped object candidate regions, the threshold value is set based on the non-maximum suppression method to eliminate redundant candidate regions. Therefore, the generated negative samples are reduced, which guarantees the stable effect of the proposed model. Experiments show that the proposed vehicle detection method has a faster detection speed. The robustness and accuracy of the proposed model are better than other related vehicle detection methods.
