In recent years, rooftops have been used as productive spaces for local resource (e.g. food, water, or energy) production. The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the potential of hyperspectral data to identify roof materials in cities. The case study area is located in a Mediterranean region north of Barcelona (Spain); diverse building typologies, building uses (residential, industrial, office, services and retail) and population densities constitute this study area. Two hyperspectral remote sensors (HRSs) were used to obtain hyperspectral images. Seven roof classes were identified using the k-means clustering algorithm. Most roofs were identified as metals (33 percent), followed by ceramic tiles (22 percent). The findings showed that 51 percent of roofs could be suitable for food, water, or energy production. Sustainability has increasingly become key in universities, as the objectives of sustainable development are essential to establish policies, guidelines and indicators that guide institutions to be more sustainable. This recognition has led many authors to develop methods to assess universities based on their performance in terms of sustainable development. This article presents a review of these methods. The review focuses on identifying existing methods and classifying the methods according to seven characteristics: (1) nature of the data, (2) data collection, (3) scope, (4) level of implementation, (5) pillars of sustainability, (6) university function, (7) country perspective taken, which will allow identifying the differences between methods when assessing sustainability. The seven criteria established for the characterization of the sustainability assessment methods contain a total of 27 sub-criteria distributed among the properties. The main contribution of the study is the analysis of the revised methods through a comprehensive characterization and systematic grouping. In the discussion, the results are examined by looking at the comprehensiveness, heterogeneity and objectivity of the methods reviewed. The paper has two interconnected bodies. The first one deals with mineral resource indicators and their role in drawing 11 EU–Africa Strategic Corridors, in a broader context of Africa–EU partnership. The second strives to understand how such Strategic Corridors are also mineral corridors, i.e. development promotors that use mineral resources as a catalyser to create and strengthen value chains and territorial organisation, boosting economic and societal development at regional scale. The results can help understand how Strategic Corridors can improve access to the present and future mines, mitigating the risk of supply disruptions of critical raw materials for the EU. Roof characteristics such as material type and their properties information are essential to integrating urban agriculture (UA), rainwater harvesting systems (RWHS), and energy systems on roofs. Roof materials can be identified from their spectral signatures. However, this identification requires a priori knowledge of the materials' spectral characteristics. The main perspective of this work is the future use of spectral data for roof classification. A common practice in mapping materials is the use of spectral libraries. In this regard, this work describes a novel framework for laboratory-based spectral data acquisition. The reflectance data of common, recently introduced (plastics and metals), and representative roof materials from the Mediterranean region were obtained. Data acquisition was conducted in a laboratory under controlled conditions using a high-spatial-resolution (HSR) sensor, which is usually used for airborne surveys. Large variations in the spectral reflectance data were observed due to the composition of the roof material. Flat spectral signatures were found for fibre cement, concrete, gravels and some metals, especially from the near-infrared (NIR) spectral region. Colour and surface finish greatly influence the visible (VIS) spectral range. It was confirmed that the view angle did not modify the spectral shapes. A collection of 39 spectral data of roof materials (ceramics, concrete, fibre cement, metals, plastics, paints, stone, and wood) were compiled into a spectral library that is available online. Current policies are centred on the development of international links, which require large capital-intensive projects and are sometimes economically dubious. This paper reviews the past policies and transport functions since colonial times by placing them in their economic and political context. We find that present strategies have similarities to the ones prevailing in previous periods, where expansion phases dominated by transport-led economic growth theories were followed by a stagnation of Africa’s infrastructure development. In view of the challenges in translating findings from empirical research into right policies, we identify the potential of more balanced and sustainable strategic investments, notably by reinforcing the existing secondary transport networks converging into urban centres. Most geosynthetic and metallic reinforced soil walls are designed assuming that the wall foundation is rigid and/or does not influence the magnitude and distribution of reinforcement loads under operational conditions. This assumption may not apply to walls constructed over compliant (compressible) foundations. This paper describes the results of a series of numerical simulations that were carried out on idealized 3·6, 6, and 9 m-high modular block walls seated on foundations having four different compressibility values. The walls were constructed with two reinforcement materials having very different stiffness values but the same tensile strength. The results of simulations show that as foundation stiffness decreases, reinforcement loads increase. However, for the two reinforcement materials in this study, the influence of axial stiffness of the reinforcement had a greater effect on wall performance than the foundation stiffness for walls subjected to operational (working stress) conditions at end of construction. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a leading cause of infectious disease in the world today. This outlook is aggravated by a growing number of M. tuberculosis infections in individuals who are immunocompromised as a result of HIV infections. Thus, new and more potent anti-TB agents are necessary. Therefore, acetolactate synthase (mtALS) was selected as a target enzyme to combat M. tuberculosis. In this work, the three-dimensional molecular model of the hypothetical structure for the ALS catalytic subunit of M. tuberculosis was elucidated by homology modelling. In addition, the orientations and binding affinities of sulfonylurea inhibitors with the new structure was investigated. Determination of particle-size distribution employing the most common methods is laborious and time-consuming. The objective of this study was to compare alternative analytical procedures adequate to classify soil texture of cropped soils. Eight Spanish topsoil samples selected according to their organic matter, CaCO[sub 3], and clay content, from representative agricultural Xerochrepts were tested. Differences in the methodologies were removal by hydrogen peroxide-treatment or no removal of organic matter and overnight mechanical shaking or ultrasonic physical dispersion. The pipette method was used for determination of particle fractions. Correlation for all the three particle sizes was found among the alternative procedures and the standard methodology (with removal of organic matter and mechanical shaking) and regression equations were developed (R² > 0.96). Ultrasonic dispersion was found to be faster than mechanical shaking without significant (p < 0.05) changes in reported results. The clay fraction was most affected by the use of modified techniques although the observed decrease did not change the soil textural class of any samples. Organic matter content produced more differences between the results, especially when no pretreatment for destruction of organic matter on samples with organic matter content higher than 2% was conducted. Except for the more organic samples, the advantages associated with no removal of organic matter and ultrasonic dispersion include decreasing the time and work, and allowing accurate measurements of agricultural soil samples.
