The volume-averaging continuum technique has been utilized to obtain numerical predictions for the transport phenomena occurring during the dissolution process of GaSb into InSb melt in a sandwich system. Dissolution and subsequent growth in this system are achieved by the application of a temperature gradient. The developed model was first verified for two test cases [(i) fluid/solid conjugate heat transfer and (ii) the solidification process of the binary system]. The code was then utilized to simulate the dissolution process of GaSb into InSb in the GaSb/InSb/GaSb sandwich system. We have recently proposed a slit coater method for printable liquid crystal (LC) devices. In this method, the LC/reactive mesogen (RM) mixture was directly coated uniaxially onto the substrate surface by shear flow between the slit nozzle and the substrate, and the liquid crystalline molecules were anchored by in situ photopolymerisation of RM monomers. In this study, the dependence of electro-optical properties and device parameters of LC sample cells fabricated by the slit coater on ultraviolet (UV) exposure dosage was investigated. Moreover, effects of UV exposure dosage and thermal annealing on the azimuthal anchoring energy of LC sample cells fabricated by the slit coater are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spinal subependymomas, which have a relatively benign nature, are very rare tumors. It is difficult to distinguish spinal subependymomas from other intramedullary spinal tumors based on neuroradiological findings. A case of cervical intramedullary subependymoma in a 63-year-old female is reported. The diffused enlargement of the spinal cord at C2 level involved the lesion with isointensity on a T1-weighted MRI and relatively high intensity on a T2-weighted MRI. Enhancement in the small part of the tumor was observed on a T1-weighted MRI with gadolinium administration. The tumor occupied the left side of the spinal cord, and was totally removed through a laminoplasty of C2. Immunohistochemistry was useful for pathological diagnosis. Intradural neurenteric cysts are rare congenital lesions and arise from incomplete separation of the developing notochord and foregut in the embryo. Neurenteric cysts are often seen in conjunction with other forms of occult spinal dysraphism. The cases of a 48-year-old male with pain in the right shoulder and numbness in both hands and a 7-year-old girl with subacute muscle weakness of the lower extremities are presented. Both patients underwent surgery. One lesion was completely excised, while the other could be only partially removed because of negative monitoring potential during the operation. Histological examination, showing pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium, confirmed the diagnosis of neurenteric cyst. The symptoms in both patients nearly disappeared after surgery. Recurrence of cyst was observed in the girl, though without neurological symptoms. In conclusion, two cases of intradural extramedullary cysts are reported. A Ti-44Ni-6Fe (at. %) alloy was recently reported to exhibit a second order-like incommensurate-commensurate transformation. Whether or not the commensurate (C) phase and the R-phase in Ti-Ni alloys are the same phase has now been investigated. Transformation behaviour was examined in a series of Ti-(50 - x)Ni-xFe (at. %) alloys with x = 2.0, 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 5.7, 6.0. Transformation temperature, entropy change and the transformation strain decrease continuously as x increases up to x = 5.7, where the product phase is apparently the R-phase. However, there is an obvious discontinuity in these values between x = 5.7 and x = 6.0. In addition, electron diffraction experiments have revealed that the intensity of satellite reflections of the C-phase is obviously weaker than that of the R-phase. Diffuse scatterings appearing in electron diffraction patterns of Ti-(50 - x)Ni-xFe (x = 6, 7, 8, 10, in at.%) alloys were investigated. In the alloys, martensitic (R-phase) transformation is suppressed down to 4.2 K, but the electrical resistivity exhibits a local minimum at Tmin (210 K, 195 K, 180 K and 140 K for x = 6, 7, 8, 10, respectively). The following results were obtained for all the alloys. Diffuse scattering appears below Tmin and its intensity maximum is located at an incommensurate position of g + 〈ζζ0〉*, where g is a reciprocal lattice vector of the B2-phase. The value ζ at Tmin is significantly smaller than 1/3 and increases with decreasing temperature; it decreases with increasing Fe content. The value of ζ at Tmin agrees with the length of nesting vector obtained by a band calculation, suggesting that the diffuse scattering is caused by the nesting effect of the Fermi surface in the B2-type structure. Tethered cord syndrome with spinal lipoma is the most common form of occult spinal dysraphism. For the symptomatic patients, surgical treatment is recommended; however, there are many patients who have not been encouraged to seek medical attention until adulthood, since their symptoms are not severe enough to interfere with their daily activities. We performed pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) to achieve indirect untethering and neural decompression in two senior patients with tethered cord syndrome, who showed deteriorating neurological condition due to coexisting lumbar canal stenosis. Here we report two patients (aged 56 and 60 years) who underwent PSO of L3 or L4. The pain disappeared and the bladder dysfunction recovered significantly after surgery. Complete bone union and untethering were achieved in both patients. PSO is an alternative surgical technique for senior patients with tethered cord syndrome caused by lumbosacral spinal lipoma, when the syndrome occurs along with lumbar canal stenosis.
