The article presents a study on the influence of motives and incentives on volunteers' attitudes and performance. The study was conducted at the United Way in Buffalo, New York, a unit of an umbrella national voluntary organization. The organization offered a variety of incentives to appeal to the diversity of volunteers' motives. Two questionnaires were offered, one for supervisors who reported volunteers' performance and the incentives they used to motivate each volunteer, and one for volunteers who indicated their motives for volunteering and their attitudes toward volunteering. Results indicated that congruent matches of the type and strength of motives and incentives were associated with the most positive affect about being a volunteer.
