Understanding how resilient forests are to ecological engineering projects (EEPs) is essential to forest management and ecosystem health. Despite growing evidence that EEPs achieve increasing carbon stocks, whether such benefits can be sustainable and what are the consequences of EEPs on forest health remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the long‐term effects of EEPs using forest resilience from aspects of resistance and recovery, by applying a change detection algorithm (breaks for additive seasonal and trend; BFAST) spatially on net ecosystem production (NEP) (proxy for carbon stocks) time series (1981–2019) in red soil hilly region (RSHR) of subtropical China. The spatial parameters (e.g., the number, magnitude, and time of changes) used to construct resilience metrics were generated based on BFAST‐derived breakpoints. These metrics were then utilized to analyze the dynamics of forest resilience in relation to EEPs factors in terms of plantation area, forest type, and stand age. Our results observed 92.77% of breakpoints in NEP after 2000, which corresponds well with the periods that multiple EEPs were conducted. NEP resilience showed great variability during 2001–2019, with a positive increasing trend in resistance (R2 = 0.72) and a continuous decline (R2 = 0.37) in recovery, indicating an unhealthy ecosystem in RSHR. Our findings revealed that forest resistance was strongly associated with plantation area (R = 0.71), and the presence of monoculture and young coniferous forest may be the potential factors for the decline in recovery. Estimation of energy partitioning at leaf scale, such as fluorescence yield (ΦF) and photochemical yield (ΦP), is crucial to tracking vegetation gross primary productivity (GPP) at global scale. Nitrogen is an important participant in the process of light capture, electron transfer, and carboxylation in vegetation photosynthesis. However, the quantitative relationship between leaf nitrogen allocation and leaf energy partitioning remains unexplored. Here, a field experiment was established to explore growth stage variations in energy partitioning and nitrogen allocation at leaf scale using active fluorescence detection and photosynthetic gas exchange method in rice in the subtropical region of China. We observed a strongly positive correlation between the investment proportion of leaf nitrogen in photosynthetic system and ΦF during the vegetative growth stage. There were significant differences in leaf energy partitioning, leaf nitrogen allocation, and the relationship between ΦF and ΦP before and after flowering. Furthermore, flowering weakened the correlation between the investment proportion of leaf nitrogen in photosynthetic system and ΦF. These findings highlight the crucial role of phenological factors in exploring seasonal photosynthetic dynamics and carbon fixation of ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The data of the prognostic role of V‐Raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1 (BRAF) mutations in early‐stage lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the proportion, clinicopathological features, and prognostic significance of patients with stage I LUAD carrying BRAF mutations. Methods: We collected 431 patients with pathological stage I LUAD from cBioPortal for Cancer Genomics and 1604 LUAD patients tested for BRAF V600E and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations from Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital. Survival curves were drawn by the Kaplan–Meier method and compared by log‐rank test. Cox proportional hazard models, propensity‐score matching (PSM), and overlap weighting (OW) were performed in this study. The primary endpoint was recurrence‐free survival (RFS). Results: The proportion of BRAF mutations was estimated at 5.6% in a Caucasian cohort. BRAF V600E mutations were detected in six (1.4%) patients in Caucasian populations and 16 (1.0%) patients in Chinese populations. Two BRAF V600E‐mutant patients were detected to have concurrent EGFR mutations, one for 19‐del and one for L858R. For pathological stage I LUAD patients, BRAF mutations were not significantly associated with worse RFS than wild‐type BRAF patients (HR = 1.111; p = 0.885). After PSM and OW, similar results were presented (HR = 1.352; p = 0.742 and HR = 1.246; p = 0.764, respectively). BRAF V600E mutation status also lacked predictive significance for RFS (HR, 1.844; p = 0.226; HR = 1.144; p = 0.831 and HR = 1.466; p = 0.450, respectively). Conclusions: In this study, we demonstrated that BRAF status may not be capable of predicting prognosis in stage I LUAD patients. There is a need for more data to validate our findings. Background: Hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb) positivity is considered a prior hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. However, little is known about the effect of HBcAb positivity on surgical safety for hilar cholangiocarcinoma (hCCA). The present study aims to investigate the role of HBcAb positivity on postoperative complications of hCCA. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the status of HBcAb positivity, liver fibrosis, perioperative surgical complications, and long‐term outcomes of hCCA patients with Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) negativity who underwent surgical treatment in Tongji Hospital from April 2012 to September 2019. Results: HBcAb positivity with negative HBsAg occurs in 137 hCCA patients (63.1%). A total of 99 hCCA patients with negative HBsAg underwent extended hemihepatectomy, of whom 69 (69.7%) and 30 (30.3%) were HBcAb‐positive and HBcAb‐negative, respectively. Significant fibrosis was detected in 63.8% of the patients with HBcAb‐positive, which was markedly higher than those with HBcAb‐negative (36.7%) (p = 0.016). The postoperative complications and 90‐day mortality rates were 37.4% (37/99) and 8.1% (8/99), respectively. The incidence of postoperative complications in HBcAb‐positive patients (44.9%) was significantly higher than that in HBcAb‐negative patients (20.0%) (p = 0.018). All the patients who died within 30‐day after surgery were HBcAb‐positive. Multivariate analysis showed that the independent risk factors for complications were HBcAb positivity, preoperative cholangitis, portal occlusion >15 min, and significant fibrosis. There were no significant differences in recurrence‐free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) between HBcAb‐positive and HBcAb‐negative patients (p = 0.642 and p = 0.400, respectively). Conclusions: HBcAb positivity is a common phenomenon in hCCA patients from China, a country with highly prevalent HBcAb positivity. The status of HBcAb‐positive markedly increases the incidence of postoperative complications after extended hemihepatectomy for hCCA patients. The present study aims to evaluate the prevalence of HBcAb positivity in hCCA patients and explore the effect of HBcAb positivity on postoperative complications of hCCA patients after curative resection. Among all the 217 patients, 160 (73.7%) patients were HBcAb positive. Data of 99 HBsAg negative patients who underwent curative resection were analyzed, and the HBcAb positivity markedly increased the risk of postoperative complications and mortality after curative resection for hCCA. Surgeons should pay more attention to HBcAb status in hCCA patients with negative HBsAg, which could help them to select optimal surgical modalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Food availability and climate represent environmental factors that affect species' social behavior, ranging patterns, diet, and activity budget. From August 2012 to September 2013, we examined the effects of seasonal changes in food availability, temperature, and rainfall on the diet and behavioral ecology of Shortridge's langur (Trachypithecus shortridgei) an Endangered primate species inhabiting moist evergreen broadleaf forests in the Eastern Himalayas. Our field site represents the northernmost latitudinal distribution of this species. Data were collected using scan sampling at 10 min intervals, and analyzed based on generalized linear models. The results indicate that the langurs experienced two feeding peaks (9:00 and 17:00) and two traveling peaks (10:00 and 19:00) during each day. Periods of rest, mainly occurred between 10:00 and 13:00, and overnight. Feeding accounted for 38.5% of the daily activity budget, followed by resting (35%), traveling (24.5%), and socializing (2%). During periods when young leaves were most available, the langurs increased feeding time on young leaves (35% vs. 4%). During periods of maximum fruit availability, the langurs decreased total time spent feeding (36.6% vs. 40.4%), devoted more time to traveling (28.1% vs. 21%), and increased time spent consuming fruit (49.1% vs. 11.8%). During the winter, the langurs increased their consumption of mature leaves (44.5%) and reduced time spent traveling (20.2% vs. 25.4%). Overall, time spent resting was greatest in the spring (47.5%), time spent feeding was greatest during the summer (51.1%), and time spent in traveling was greatest in the autumn (33.2%). The frequency of social interactions remained relatively constant throughout the year. Foraging effort was greatest in the summer, when fruits dominated the diet. Like other species of temperate langurs, T. shortridgei devoted less time to resting, more time to feeding, and was characterized by a greater year‐round foraging effort than tropical/subtropical langurs. Research Highlights: This is the first study examining the activity budget and feeding effort of the Endangered Trachypithecus shortridgei.Food availability played a more critical role in the foraging effort and activity budget of Trachypithecus shortridgei than did rainfall or temperature.Similar to other temperate Trachypithecus species, T. shortridgei in the Gaoligong Mountains adopted a time minimizing behavioral strategy and had a greater annual foraging effort than tropical langur species. The Yangla deposit is an intrusion‐related Cu deposit in the Jinshajiang tectonic belt (eastern Sanjiang region, SW China). Despite extensive studies that have been conducted on this deposit, the relationship between the granitic magma and Cu mineralization is still unclear, and hence, the genesis is debated. To answer this question, we conducted an integrated study of mineralogy, fluid inclusions (FIs), and hydrogen and oxygen (H‐O) isotopes. Three mineralization stages were identified based on the ore textures, alteration zonation, and crosscutting relationships: (i) pre‐ore prograde skarn (stage I), with the garnet and pyroxene dominated by andradite and diopside, respectively; (ii) syn‐ore retrograde alteration (stage II), which is subdivided into the early syn‐ore stage (stage IIa) marked by retrograde hydrated mineral assemblages and significant Fe‐Cu‐Mo‐Pb‐Zn sulfide mineralization, and the late syn‐ore stage (stage IIb) featured by quartz‐calcite veins; and (iii) late supergene mineralization (stage III), which is characterized by secondary azurite and malachite. These results of mineralogy, FIs, and H‐O isotopes indicate that: (i) Cu mineralization has a close temporal, spatial, and genetic relationship with skarn alteration; (ii) the ore fluids were magmatic dominated with late‐stage meteoric water incursion; and (iii) Type‐S (halite‐bearing) and Type‐V (vapor‐rich) FIs coexisted in garnet and clinopyroxene of stage I, indicating that fluid boiling might have occurred during this stage. From stage I to stage IIa, the FI type transformed from Type‐S + Type‐V + Type‐L (liquid‐rich) to Type‐V + Type‐L with the conduct of mineralization and was accompanied by the disappearance of Type‐S, and homogenization temperature and salinity also tended to decrease dramatically, which may be caused by the deposition of skarn minerals. At stage IIa, boiling of the ore fluids still continued due to the change from lithostatic to hydrostatic pressure, which triggered the precipitation of abundant quartz‐Cu‐Mo‐Fe sulfides. Furthermore, fluid mixing between a high‐temperature magmatic fluid and a low‐temperature meteoric water might cause a considerable drop in temperature and the deposition of Cu‐bearing quartz/calcite veins during stage IIb. Hence, we consider the Yangla deposit to be of a skarn type, genetically related to the Mesozoic magmatism in the Sanjiang region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study on the archaeal diversity in three acid mine drainage (AMD) samples from Dabaoshan Mine in China. It employs amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) to describe the genetic level of the diversity and community structures of the archaeal communities. It evaluates nine different ARDRA patterns from 146 clones and were analyzed as operational taxonomic units (OTUs). It presents the sequence data and phylogenetic analysis of the clones associated to the Thermoplasmatales. It identifies the existence of one OTU assigned to Ferroplasma and the isolation of the clones in two similar units. It explains the reciprocality of Simpson's index in these diversities and the correlation of the concentrations of ferrous ions and toxic ions in the AMD samples.

Black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus bieti) rely on behavioral and dietary flexibility to survive in temperate latitudes at high-elevation habitats characterized by climate and resource seasonality. However, little is known about how elevation influences their behavioral and dietary flexibility at monthly or seasonal scales. We studied an isolated R. bieti population at Mt. Lasha in the Yunling Provincial Nature Reserve, Yunnan, China, between May 2008 and August 2016 to assess the impacts of elevation on feeding behavior and diet. Across our sample, R. bieti occupied elevations between 3031 and 3637 m above mean sea level (amsl), with a 315.1 m amsl range across months and a 247.3 m amsl range across seasons. Contrary to expectations, individuals spent less time feeding when ranging across higher elevations. Lichen consumption correlated with elevation use across months and seasons, with individuals spending more time feeding on this important resource at higher elevations. Leaf consumption only correlated with elevation use during the spring. Our results suggest that R. bieti do not maximize their food intake at higher elevations and that monthly and seasonal changes in lichen and leaf consumption largely explain variation in elevation use. Aims: We propose a simple type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) classification method based on fasting C-peptide (FCP) levels and examined its feasibility and validity., Methods: Adult T2DM patients first diagnosed in our tertiary care centre from January 2009 to January 2020 were included. Patients were followed until January 2021; their clinical characteristics, chronic complications, treatment regimen, and glycaemic control were compared., Results: In total, 5644 T2DM patients were included. Three subgroups were established based on FCP levels: subtype T1 (FCP ≤ 1.0 μg/L), 1423 patients (25.21%); subtype T2 (FCP 1.0-2.5 μg/L), 2914 patients (51.63%); and subtype T3 (FCP ≥ 2.5 μg/L), 1307 patients (23.16%). T1 was characterised by older age, lower body mass indices, higher initial glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, and the lowest homoeostatic model assessment 2 estimates of β-cell function (HOMA2-β) and HOMA2-insulin resistance at baseline. The T3 group's clinical characteristics were opposite to those of T1. T3 patients showed higher incidence rates and risks of diabetic kidney disease, diabetic peripheral vascular disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver, while the risks of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic peripheral neuropathy were highest in T1. Insulin, glycosidase inhibitors, and thiazolidinedione were the most frequently used drugs, but the use of metformin, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, and insulin secretagogue drugs was slightly lower in T1. T1 maintained higher HbA1c levels throughout follow-up. WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS SUBJECT * Genetic polymorphisms of VKORC1 and CYP2C9 are known to influence warfarin dosage. * Recent studies among Caucasians showed that polymorphisms of CYP4F2 also play a role in warfarin pharmacogenetics. * The contribution of CYP4F2 variants to the variability inwarfarin dose requirement in Chinese subjects remains to be investigated. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS * This research was to study the effect of CYP4F2 variants on warfarin requirements in the Han Chinese population. * This study developed a multiple regression model including CYP2C9, VKORC1 3673G>A, CYP4F2 genotypes and age, weight, combination use of amiodarone which could explain 56.1% of the individual variability in warfarin dose CYP4F2 could explain 4% of the variance in warfarin dose. * We found that one novel genotypic polymorphism 5417G>T for Asp36Tyr, which was identified as an important marker of warfarin resistance, was absent in the Han Chinese population in our study. AIMS The objective of this study was to assess the effect of the CYP4F2 on the daily stable warfarin dose requirement in Han Chinese patients with mechanical heart valve replacement (MHVR). METHODS From March 2007 to November 2008, 222 Han Chinese MHVR patients were recruited in our study. VKORC1 3673G>A, 5417G>T, CYP2C9*3 and CYP4F2 rs2108622 were genotyped by using the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism method (PCR-RFLP). Polymorphisms of VKORC1 9041G>A were detected by direct sequencing. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to investigate the contribution of CYP4F2. RESULTS The CYP4F2 rs2108622 CT/TT group took a significantly higher stable warfarin dose (3.2 mg day(-1)) than the CC group (2.9 mg day(-1), 95% CI 0.2, 1.0, P= 0.033). The multiple linear regression model included VKORC1 3673G>A, CYP2C9, CYP4F2 genotypes and clinical characteristics. The model could explain 56.1% of the variance in stable warfarin dose in Han Chinese patients with MHVR. CYP4F2 contributed about 4% to the variance in the warfarin dose. There was no variation in the SNPs of VKORC1 5417G>T. CONCLUSION CYP4F2 is a minor significant factor of individual variability in the stable warfarin dose in Han Chinese patients with MHVR. The effect of CYP2C9 and VKORC1 genotypes on variability in the stable warfarin dose had also been confirmed.
