This paper represents the first study on the Xinzhai Culture pottery from Huadizui site, China using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and petrographic. Huadizui pottery is considered to be produced locally, and the raw materials for making pottery come from the Xiaoqinling‐Xiong'er Mountain and Songshan Mountain chain. There are at least two or three clay sources or workshops in the Huadizui site, which is evidenced by petrographic characteristics and the chemical composition of samples. All of the investigated samples were mainly related to quartz and feldspar pellets. The corresponding relationship between the characteristics of the matrix and pottery categories reflects potters pursuing the function of vessels at that time. Atmospheric mercury is a crucial pollutant that must be well‐controlled to avoid damaging public health. It is thus necessary to understand from multiple perspectives the roles played by different industrial sectors, as well as their geographical distribution. Existing studies have overlooked the transmission sectors in the economic supply chains of the embodied atmospheric mercury emission network. In this paper, we offer a betweenness‐based account (BBA) for Chinese regions and industrial sectors in transmitting embodied atmospheric mercury emissions and in doing so have identified the transmitting hubs. Our results show that the Henan province acts as the transmission hub of the embodied atmospheric mercury emission network in China. The metallurgy, chemical, and construction industries generally play important roles in the transmission of embodied atmospheric mercury emissions across China. Henan's metallurgy sector, the third highest of all, is more closely linked with inter‐provincial sectors than the top two transmission sectors (the metallurgy industry of Jiangsu and the chemical industry of Shandong). This study can help policy makers improve mercury control measures by focusing on transmission processes for effective and comprehensive atmospheric mercury emission control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Childbirth was a significant factor in ancient female mortality, but relatively few cases of death in childbirth have been reported in the bioarchaeological literature due to challenges of recovery and interpretation. Here, we report a possible case of dystocia from the late Neolithic (3500–2900 BCE) settlement of Shuanghuaishu site (Gongyi City, Henan Province, China). An adult female skeleton was discovered in an inhumation burial with the remains of a foetus in the pelvis. The top of the foetal skull has exited the pelvic outlet, but most of the head remains in the pelvic cavity. The face is oriented away from the mother's spine, indicating that the foetus was in persistent occipitoposterior position. In modern deliveries, this atypical positioning is associated with complications including prolonged labour and excessive maternal bleeding. Long bone measurements indicate that the foetus was large compared with full‐term modern infants. This may indicate foetal macrosomia, which is also associated with prolonged and difficult labour. These indicators suggest that this was a case of dystocia, with the large size and positioning of the foetus leading to obstructed labour and the death of both mother and infant. The presence of some cranial remains outside the pelvic outlet could represent either partial delivery of the head or partial post mortem delivery (coffin birth). This paper provides an example of the interpretive challenges facing researchers investigating reproductive mortality in ancient China and in other past societies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses multidimensional inequalities in health care distribution for Henan Province in central China. The paper has two objectives: (1) examining the multi-scale health care inequality in Henan from two dimensions, urban-rural and core-periphery and (2) revealing the spatial effects of China's multiple transitions, provincial development strategies, and local economic development on health care distribution. The authors used geographic information systems-based spatial statistical methods to detect the spatial-temporal variation of health care distribution, and applied geographically weighted regression to reveal the effects of multiple transitions on the health care sector. The results illustrate that urban-rural and core-periphery gaps in Henan are still significant even though health care reforms and recent provincial policies have improved the access of rural and peripheral areas to health care. Health care inequality is sensitive to geographical scale and clustering, and spatial patterns of health care are shaped by the interwoven forces at national, provincial, and local scales. The heartlands of many of the world's civilizations are situated within alluvial plains, where thick alluvial sediments obscure much of the archaeological record. However, the use of alluvial geoarchaeology remains patchy, particularly in the world's largest alluvial basins. We present results from our geoarchaeological survey at Neihuang County, Henan Province, China, as an example for alluvial geoarchaeological research in the North China Plain and to develop a generalized framework for landscape evolution in the area during the Holocene. We reconstruct the alluvial history of the area around Neihuang County by synthesizing stratigraphic data from seven outcrops into distinct depositional units. Our findings suggest that much of the archaeological record in the North China Plain is buried by meters of sediment or eroded away by the ancient channels of the Yellow River and other tributary streams. Therefore, the presence of buried archaeological sites and river scour in recorded outcrops suggests that the nonsystematic archaeological surveys that are commonly used to interpret cultural changes are not accurate reflections of archaeological site distributions. From the results of this case study, we recommend that archaeologists and paleoclimatologists should exercise more caution when using settlement distribution data gathered through nonsystematic pedestrian surveys to make inferences about ancient processes of cultural change or social dynamics in the North China Plain. Floods had a massive impact on the development of ancient cities around the world and understanding this phenomenon constitutes an essential part of the history of long‐term and dynamic human–environment interactions. There remains, however, an enormous challenge in identifying records of ancient floods in urban environments due to various sedimentation and postdepositional processes that often remove, erase, and alter such environmental records. During archaeological excavations in the famous historic city of Kaifeng, we identified records of two historical floods at the Shuntianmen site. Related stratums were carefully studied, from which dating and sediment samples were collected. These excavated stratums were also scanned to obtain digital data for modeling. Combining these data, we then applied three‐dimensional modeling to reconstruct the evolution of the natural and cultural landscape of the site since the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127 AD), which was not possible in previous studies due to the deep burial of archaeological strata. Our results indicate that the two floods occurred during the late Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 AD) and the Qing Dynasty (1636–1912 AD), respectively. During the Northern Song Dynasty, Shuntianmen was an important part of Kaifeng, which was, at that time, the capital of China and one of the largest cities in the world. Later, during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, Shuntianmen became a suburban settlement situated along various traffic routes. During the Qing Dynasty, the area became a small village. Subsequently, the area was completely abandoned and deserted until modern Kaifeng, which was built at the same place. The evolution of the regional landscape is the direct result of the interaction between the natural environment and human activities, among which the precarious alluvial processes of the Yellow River were playing an increasingly vital role. Over the centuries, the Yellow River floods, warfare, and wind‐blown sand accumulation reduced the Kaifeng region from a prosperous capital to a comparatively deserted area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blastocystis sp. is one of the most common intestinal parasites in humans and many animals. To further understand the infection of Blastocystis hominis (B. hominis) and the distribution of its genotype in some areas of Henan Province, China, 793 stool samples from outpatients and inpatients in Xinxiang City and Xinyang City, Henan Province were collected from April 2020 to July 2022. The samples were detected by polymerase chain reaction and analyzed by univariate analysis and logistic regression analysis. The results showed that the infection rates of B. hominis in Xinxiang and Xinyang were 10.97% (51/465) and 10.98% (36/328), respectively. Although there were no significant differences in B. hominis infection between gender, age, residence, and disease background, the incidence of hematochezia significantly differed from the incidence of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation among participants (χ2 = 15.795, p = 0.002). A total of 87 positive samples were sequenced and compared with Basic Local Alignment Search Tool, and five subtypes (ST1, ST3, ST4, ST6, and ST7) were identified, of which ST3 was the dominant subtype (63.22%, 55/87), followed by ST7 (17.24%, 15/87) and ST1 (16.09%, 14/87). This is the first study that analyzed the prevalence and subtype distribution of B. hominis in southern and northern Henan Province, thus providing new insights into the epidemiology of B. hominis. An extreme heavy rainfall event in Henan Province (HnHRE) of central China in July 2021, which is jointly affected by the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) and Typhoon In‐Fa (2021), is comprehensively studied through five experiments conducted using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). The patterns of the WPSH, In‐Fa, and precipitation are well reproduced in the control experiment. The magnitude of potential vorticity (PV) anomaly associated with the WPSH (In‐Fa) is increased and decreased by 50% in the initial condition based on the piecewise PV inversion method, namely, SH150 and SH050 (TC150 and TC050), respectively. The analysis shows that the 54‐hr rainfall accumulations in TC150 and TC050 are reduced by 39.5% and 31.8%, respectively, more than 28.8% in SH150 and 20.1% in SH050, indicating that Typhoon In‐Fa plays a more critical role in the rainfall amplification than the WPSH. This result also confirms that the HnHRE occurs within the quite favorable configuration of WPSH and In‐Fa circulations. The WPSH and In‐Fa majorly control the meridional and zonal moisture transports, respectively. The diagnosis of moist ageostrophic ω $\omega $ turns out that diabatic heating is closely related to the vertical motion during the HnHRE. Besides, the heavy rainfall region is also closely attributed to the distributions of equivalent potential temperature and divergence. Previous numerical studies have focused on the direct impact of microphysics schemes on multiscale atmospheric systems that produce rainfall. However, the indirect impact of microphysics schemes on the key large‐scale circulation around areas of extreme rainfall has not yet been examined systematically. We used the ARW‐WRF (Advanced Research WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) Model) to simulate the extreme rainfall event in Henan province, China from 19 to 21 July 2021. Experiments were conducted to investigate the sensitivity of the simulation to the three popular double‐moment microphysics parameterizations: the Thompson, Morrison and WDM6 (WRF Double‐Moment 6‐Class Microphysics Schemes). We found significant sensitivity to the microphysics parameterization, with the maximum precipitation varying by up to 400 mm and the area‐averaged precipitation by 33 mm. The Thompson and Morrison microphysics schemes produced the largest amount of precipitation, whereas the WDM6 scheme produced the smallest amount of precipitation. The simulated southerly flow varied substantially between the different microphysics schemes. This is due to the ability of the microphysics schemes to produce latent heat, which enhances the southerly flow, leading to more intense precipitation. The higher the parameterized latent heat, the stronger and more obvious the southerly flow over southern Henan province, with the WDM6 scheme simulating a much weaker southerly flow and the Thompson scheme producing the strongest southerly flow. These results indicate that the indirect effects on the key circulation patterns can be just as sensitive to the formulation of the microphysics scheme as the direct effects on extreme rainfall. These results may help to improve the prediction of extreme rainfall events. However, previous studies have focused on rain amount related to the microphysical schemes caused by intrinsic microphysical processes or direct influencing systems—such as typhoons, squall lines and convective systems—and little attention has been paid to increase of rain amount related to the microphysical schemes caused by the surrounding key circulation of extreme rainfall. Through numerical simulations of the extreme rainfall event in Henan province, China from 19 to 21 July 2021 using three popular microphysics schemes, we show that indirect effect of microphysical schemes on the extreme rainfall can effectively regulate the southerly flow over southern China. The microphysics schemes influence the southerly flow through latent heating. A greater amount of latent heat can produce a stronger southerly flow, which favors the transport of water vapor and energy to the Henan region and produce more intense precipitation. A record‐breaking flooding event occurred in Zhengzhou, Henan Province of China during 17–23 July 2021, causing hundreds of deaths and vast economic losses. Here, we evaluated the predictability of this extreme rainfall event and the impacts of tropical cyclones (TCs) using subseasonal‐to‐seasonal (S2S) operational models. On the monthly timescale, most models initialized in late June reasonably predicted the wet‐in‐north and dry‐in‐south patterns of anomalous rainfall over China in July, accompanied by the well‐predicted westward extension of the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) and eastward stretching of the South Asian High. On the weekly timescale, only four models captured the location, probability, and sudden intensification of the rainfall extremes in advance of 1 week, largely due to their reasonable prediction of WNPSH variability in mid‐latitudes. However, the S2S models still underestimated the super extremeness of this event. The prediction discrepancies came from the poor predictability of Typhoon IN‐FA and its impact on the daily evolution of the extreme rainfall event, even within a few days forecast lead. Compared with the observation, the prediction bias of tropical disturbance changed the environmental monsoon airflow to induce the earlier warning of rainfall extremes prior to the formation of IN‐FA. After the formation of IN‐FA, the prediction bias of the typhoon's moving speed distorted the typhoon location, which incorrectly predicted the moisture convergence center and underestimated their remote impacts on this heavy rainfall event. Plain Language Summary: Unprecedented heavy rainfall reaches the warming Earth more frequently, creating the need for effective risk‐warning alerts that utilize subseasonal‐to‐seasonal (S2S) forecasting to integrate information from nowcasting, weather, and seasonal predictions. On 17–23 July 2021, persistent heavy rainfall affected Henan Province of China, triggering devastating flooding and traffic chaos in Zhengzhou city. Some skillful S2S models can reasonably predict the monthly rainfall pattern in July. Although the chance of exceeding the new record daily rainfall is only approx. 0.7% in mid‐late July, they provide a high probability of this heavy weekly rainfall 1 week in advance. Nevertheless, the S2S models underestimate this super extremeness, mainly due to the poor predictability of tropical cyclones, even within a few leading days. The deficits in the tropical disturbance and moving speed of Typhoon IN‐FA in the model forecast altered the moisture transmission, underestimating their remote impacts on this extreme event. Risk management on S2S timescales is essential for many public and private sectors, as it provides pivotal lead times that save lives and property. Each extreme event exposes challenges regarding the credibility and sensitivity of the outcomes for decision‐making. Future research should improve our awareness of the challenges that remain in the S2S forecasts. We aimed to determine participation in low‐dose computed tomography (LDCT) of individuals with a family history of common cancers in a population‐based screening program to provide timely evidence in high‐risk populations in China. The analysis was conducted using data from the Cancer Screening Program in Urban China (CanSPUC), which recruited 282 377 participants aged 40 to 74 years from eight cities in the Henan province. Using the CanSPUC risk score system, 55 428 participants were evaluated to have high risk for lung cancer and were recommended for LDCT. We calculated the overall and group‐specific participation rates using family history of common cancers and compared differences in participation rates between different groups. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals were derived by multivariable logistic regression. Of the 55 428 participants, 22 260 underwent LDCT (participation rate, 40.16%). Family history of lung, esophageal, stomach, liver and colorectal cancer was associated with increased participation in LDCT screening. The odds of participants with a family history of one, two, three and four or more cancer cases undergoing LDCT screening were 1.9, 2.7, 2.8 and 3.5 times, respectively, than those without a family history of cancer. Compared to those without a history of cancer, participation in LDCT gradually increased as the number of cancer cases in the family increased (P <.001). Our findings suggest that there is room for improvement in lung cancer screening given the relatively low participation rate. Lung cancer screening in populations with a family history of cancer may improve efficiency and cost‐effectiveness; however, this requires further verification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China is important in the global mercury (Hg) cycle and is experiencing substantial economic structure transitions. There are pronounced differences in economic development, industrial structure, and consumption patterns across regions in China. However, the impacts of regional economic structure transitions (i.e., production and final demand structures) on Hg emissions in China remain unknown. Here, we reveal the transboundary impacts of changes in regional economic structures on provincial Hg emissions in China. We found that the transitions of production and final demand structures in coastal regions led to Hg emission reductions in China during 2007–2017. In particular, production structure changes in East Coast contributed to 36 metric tons of national Hg emission reduction, where 28 metric tons occurred in other regions (especially Hebei). Its final demand structure transition contributed to 19 metric tons of national emission reduction, where 15 metric tons occurred in other regions (especially Henan). Unfortunately, production structure changes in Northwest and final demand structure changes in Southwest contributed to Hg emission increments in China during 2007–2017. For instance, changes in the final demand structure of Southwest caused 34 metric tons of emission increments, mainly from provinces within the region. Thus, spatially explicit measures for China's Hg emission control can focus on the optimizations of production structure in Northwest and final demand structure in Southwest, as well as the promotion of interregional joint actions between East Coast and North China (especially Hebei and Henan). In this study, the effect of binary Typhoons Infa and Cempaka on the "21.7" heavy rainfall event over Henan Province in China is investigated based on numerical simulations. According to the rain gauge data, the temporal‐spatial distribution of precipitation in the targeted area and the large‐scale circulation in the control run show reasonable agreement with the observations. By separately excluding the relative circulation of Typhoon Infa (N_Infa) and Cempaka (N_Cempaka) at initialization, less convergence of water vapor flux within the targeted area is obtained, leading to a reduction in accumulated precipitation and rainfall intensity, especially for the mid‐to‐late raining period. Plenty of moisture mainly comes from the south and east of the rainfall region. In terms of the 60‐hr back trajectories, an overwhelming proportion of moist air parcels entering the targeted area at 850 hPa is transported along the easterly flow, which prevails between Typhoon Infa and the subtropical high. A growing proportion of air parcels advected from the south band highlights the nonnegligible effect of Typhoon Cempaka and the southwesterly flow to water vapor supply at relatively higher levels. Additional test by excluding both typhoons at initialization (N_Infa&Cempaka) suggests the complicated interaction between binary typhoons and the surrounding large‐scale circulation (such as subtropical high) may influence the initiation and development of mesoscale convection in the targeted area. With the enhancement of convergence by southwesterly and easterly flow at the lower layer from N_Infa&Cempaka, larger accumulated precipitation is obtained with the shifted location of extreme rainfall compared to that from N_Infa. An extreme precipitation event over Henan province, China from 19 to 21 July 2021 led to flood disasters in this region and widespread concern about the subsequent loss of life and livelihoods. We conducted numerical simulations to examine the impacts of typhoons In‐fa (2021) and Cempaka (2021) on this extreme rainfall event. The control simulation reasonably reproduced the motion of typhoons In‐fa and Cempaka and the associated distribution and amount of extreme rainfall. Sensitivity experiments were conducted in which typhoon In‐fa was artificially moved in both northerly and westerly directions in the initial conditions. The results indicated that the southerly flow between typhoon Cempaka and Henan, which determined the structure and distribution of the extreme rainfall event, was sensitive to the motion of typhoon In‐fa. Numerical experiments that removed typhoon Cempaka confirmed that both the movement of In‐fa and its interaction with Cempaka were closely associated with southerly flows and had a significant effect on the extreme precipitation event. In the absence of typhoon Cempaka, although typhoon In‐fa still had a remote effect on precipitation, the effect was much smaller than in the presence of Cempaka. Our simulation of this extreme rainfall event in Henan and the associated sensitivity experiments are consistent with the results of previous studies of multiple tropical cyclones, which showed that interactions among multiple tropical cyclones can lead to changes in their outer circulation that affect extreme precipitation events. Molybdenum is one of the dominant minerals in China because of its rich reserves. In recent years, outstanding breakthroughs have been made in molybdenum prospecting in China, and the distribution of molybdenum deposits in China is found to have a 'planar pattern'. In general, the molybdenum deposits are concentrated in eastern China, including the largest molybdenum reserves of Henan Province. In terms of the scale of molybdenum deposits, the identified resources of the superlarge deposits are the most important, which account for about 53% of the whole country, and those of the large deposits account for about 30%, those of the medium-sized deposits account for about 14%, those of the small-sized deposits, mine spots and mineralization account for about 3%. The molybdenum deposits are mainly classified as porphyry type, skarn type, hydrothermal (vein) type and sedimentary (metamorphic) type in genesis, and the identified resources of these types account for 85.75%, 8.83%, 2.79% and 2.63% of the total resources respectively. Based on the statistics of precise chronology data of molybdenites Re-Os, Mo-mineralization can be divided into 6 periods in Chinese geological history, which are Precambrian (>800 Ma), Cambrian-Silurian (540-415 Ma, Caledonian), Devonian-Permian (400-290 Ma, Hecynian), Triassic (260-200 Ma, Indosinian), Jurassic-Cretaceous (195-70 Ma, Yanshanian) and Paleogene-Neogene (65-10 Ma, Himalayan). Mo mineralization during the Yanshanian period is the strongest one, in which about 76.69% of the Chinese total identified resources was formed. The second is the Himalayan period. According to spatial-temporal distribution characteristics of molybdenum deposits, the metallogenic regularity of molybdenum deposits was preliminarily summarized, and 41 level-III molybdenum-forming belts, 13 level-II molybdenum-forming provinces and 4 level-I molybdenum-forming domains were ascertained in the mainland of China. There are 39 metallogenic series of and 60 sub-series of molybdenum deposits with molybdenum as the dominant metal and corresponding representative molybdenum deposits proposed. Metallogenic lineages of molybdenum deposits were also established. Spatial-temporal evolution of different types of molybdenum deposits, and the relationship between Mo-mineralization and tectonic evolution have been discussed in this paper. On this basis, the authors think that element Mo is an effective tracer for recording the crustal evolution history of China. At present, there are some problems in the exploration of Mo deposits in China, such as uneven exploration degrees in eastern and western China, shallow exploration depth, low and uneven grade, complex associated components, difficulty of mineral development and utilization, increasing costs of prospecting, and so on. According to successful experience of superficial and deep prospecting and considering also the discussion above, some suggestions are proposed for the prospecting of molybdenum deposits in the future. Two catastrophic extreme precipitation events in July 2021 and August 1975 caused tremendous damages and deaths in Henan, one of the most populated provinces in China. Revealing the relationship between large‐scale circulation patterns and precipitation extremes is vital for understanding the physical mechanisms and providing potential value for improving prediction and hence reducing impacts. Here, nine large‐scale circulation patterns are identified for July–August using the self‐organizing map. We find daily precipitation extremes under the fifth pattern (P5), characterized with the strongest easterly wind anomalies in Henan, feature the highest frequency and the largest intensity. Seven out of total 11 days in the two catastrophic extreme precipitation events belong to P5, and the top two maximum hourly precipitation extremes over continental China occurred under P5. The larger intensity of precipitation extremes is attributed to the dynamical contribution, suggesting more‐intense precipitation extremes under P5 are largely dominated by stronger ascending motions. Blastocystis is an anaerobic intestinal protozoan parasite found in humans and many kinds of animals that mainly causes diarrhea, abdominal pain, and other clinical symptoms. At present, research on the prevalence and subtype diversity of Blastocystis in domestic pigeons is very limited. The purpose of this study was to detect the infection rate and gene subtype distribution of Blastocystis in domestic pigeons in Henan Province, Central China, to provide a foundation for preventing and controlling Blastocystis in domestic pigeons. Fecal DNA was extracted from 504 fresh fecal samples of pigeons collected from four areas in Henan Province, Central China. All DNA samples were investigated by polymerase chain reaction, and positive samples were sequenced to analyze the gene subtypes based on small ribosomal subunit (SSU rRNA) gene. The overall infection rate of Blastocystis in pigeons in Henan Province was 7.7% (39/504). Four subtypes (STs) of Blastocystis were identified including ST1 (2/39, 5.1%), ST3 (16/39, 41%), ST4 (1/39, 2.6%), and ST7 (20/39, 51.3%), all of which belonged to zoonotic subtypes, and ST7 was the dominant gene subtype. The results show that Blastocystis infection is common in domestic pigeons in Henan Province, Central China, and the pathogens were zoonotic subtypes. Abundant well‐preserved microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) are exposed in the Xinji Formation, the earliest Cambrian sedimentary unit in North China. The MISS herein are categorized into microbial mat growth structure (wrinkle structures and mat biolaminites) and microbial mat destruction structure (sand cracks and 'Manchuriophycus' structures). The MISS developed on the surface of thick quartz sandstones, as well as the lithologic interface between thin sandstone and mudstone. Most of the sand cracks lack the direct evidence of microbial activities, whereas the mat biolaminites that consist of filamentous mica, clay minerals, and quartz grains may record the in situ microbial mats. The Xinji Formation deposited along with the Cambrian explosion when biodiversity and abundance of metazoan stayed relatively low. Besides, the intermittently exposed tidal flats are not the ideal place for early life, which exacerbated the ecological vacuum therein. The massive occurrence of the MISS in the siliciclastic rocks of the Xinji Formation indicated that the tidal flat setting during this period was still beneficial for accumulations of microbial mat because of the deficient grazing metazoans and weak bioturbation. This essay reflects on the still‐present difficulty in approaching contemporary rural mediumship as coeval with their urban psychotherapeutic counterparts. Drawing on ethnographic work in rural Henan province in central China, I describe how both rurality and spirit mediumship have been rendered anachronistic through national imaginaries, anti‐superstition campaigns, and psychiatric discourses. The essay centers on the case of a spirit medium located in the psychiatric unit, and the social evolutionary and developmentalist temporalities condensed in her cultural psychiatric diagnosis. I then turn to the medium's ritual work and cosmological account, which invert mediumship's position in space and time. The essay approaches mediumship's rituals as a form of chronotopic labor, which reworks the spatio‐temporal coordinates they inherit from within. It closes by bringing together the conundrums of rural mediumship and those of urban psychotherapeutic and diasporic worlds, to consider psychic landscapes of dislocation, and other formulations of futures to come. Founded in 1958, Weixing Commune was the first funded People's Commune and a group of architectural professionals participated in its design. The unique "green food" certification scheme in China, which is aimed to ensure environmental and product safety, has attracted increasing attention. In this study, using 398 household‐level survey data from kiwifruit growers in Xixia county of Henan Province, China, alongside a propensity score matching method, we examined the impact of "green food" certification scheme on economic and environmental effects. Our results showed that: (a) the "green food" certification program did not have significant environmental effect of sustainable production practices because kiwifruit growers did not significantly increase farmyard manure, reduce pesticide and chemical material inputs, except for employed labor inputs; (b) the certification did have significantly economic effect because certified growers received higher sale prices and had reasonable and even higher economic benefits. These findings suggest that the "green food" certification program did not significantly reduce the chemical material inputs, but it helped kiwifruit growers receive higher economic benefits. Background: Registry studies in high-income countries have defined contemporary management of heart failure (HF), but few such data exist in the large aging population of China. We report the study design and baseline characteristics of the Heart Failure Registry of Patient Outcomes (HERO) study, undertaken to determine evidence-practice gaps in the management of HF in a broad and representative population of China.Methods and Results: The HERO study is a prospective, longitudinal, seasonally-rotating, multicentre registry study of patients hospitalized with acute HF who are followed up over 12 months. Patients were recruited on the basis of primary admission clinical diagnosis of acute HF at 73 hospitals in Henan, the largest and most socio-economically diverse province in China, from November 2017 to November 2018; follow-up is ongoing. For each patient, data obtained through interview and medial record review by independent clinical research staff include: socio-demographics, clinical features, diagnostic investigations, and treatment, with a subset of patients providing blood samples for future biomarker investigation. Surviving patients are scheduled to be followed up by telephone at 2 weeks, and 3, 6 and 12 months post-admission, or until death or study withdrawal. A total of 5620 patients (mean age 72 ± 12 years; 50% female) with acute HF were recruited from 8 provincial-, 22 municipal-, and 43 county-level hospitals. Patients had co-morbid hypertensive (48%), coronary (29%), or metabolic (20%) diseases. Among 3147 patients who had echocardiography, 54%, 20% and 25% of patients had ejection fraction of ≥50%, 40-50%, and < 40%, respectively. In-hospital or 3-day post-discharge mortality was 3.2% (182/5620). Death or readmission rate from the 4th day post-discharge to first follow-up (median 32 days) was 22.4% (977/4368).Conclusions: The HERO study provides a unique opportunity to profile evidence-practice gaps across a broad spectrum of patients with acute HF in China. Bioenergy will play an intimate and critical role in energy supply and carbon mitigation in the future. In recent years, "customizing the development of bioenergy to local conditions" and "prioritizing distributed utilization" have been the two key principles that have been released by the Chinese government to promote the national‐ and provincial‐level development of bioenergy. While many recognize the importance of bioenergy in achieving low‐carbon transition, little is known about the high‐resolution distribution of usable biomass feedstock and technical bioenergy potential in China, which brings about uncertainties and additional challenges for creating localized utilization plans. We propose a new assessment framework that integrates crop growth models, a land suitability assessment, and the geographic information systems to address these knowledge gaps. Distributions of 11 types of usable biomass feedstock and three kinds of technical bioenergy potential are mapped out through specific transformation technologies at 1 km resolution. At the national level, the final technical biogas potential is 1.91 EJ. The technical bioethanol potential (0.04–0.96 EJ) from the energy crop can supply 0.13–3.12 times the bioethanol demand for the consumption of E10 gasoline in 2015. The technical heat potential (1.06 EJ) can meet 20% of the demand for heating in all provinces (5.38 EJ). Most of the 2020 bioenergy goals can be achieved, excluding that for bioethanol, which will need to require more cellulosic ethanol from residues. At the provincial level, Henan and Inner Mongolia have the potential to develop clean heating alternatives via the substitution of agroforestry residues for coal. The results can provide a systematic analysis of the distribution of biomass feedstocks and technical bioenergy potential in China. With economic factors taken into consideration in further research, it can also support national and provincial governments in making bioenergy development plans in an effective and timely manner. Upper gastrointestinal cancer (UGC) screening has been widely implemented in many Asian countries. However, there is little evidence of participation and diagnostic yields in population‐based UGC screening in China. The participation rate and detection of upper gastrointestinal lesions in this program were reported and related factors were explored. The analysis was conducted in the context of the Cancer Screening Program in Urban China, which recruited 179 002 eligible participants aged 40‐74 years from three cities in Henan province from 2013 to 2017. A total of 43 423 participants were evaluated to be high risk for esophageal cancer or gastric cancer by an established risk score system and were subsequently recommended for endoscopy. Of 43 423 with high risk for UGC, 7996 subjects undertook endoscopy (participation rate of 18.4%). We found that male sex, high level of education, marriage, smoking, current alcohol drinking, lack of physical activity, history of upper gastrointestinal system disease, and family history of UGC were associated with increased participation of endoscopy screening. Overall, 15 UGC (0.19%), 275 squamous epithelial dysplasia (3.44%), and 33 intraepithelial neoplasm (0.41%) cases were detected. Several factors including age, sex, smoking, current alcohol drinking, lack of physical activity, and dietary intake of processed meat were identified to be associated with the presence of upper gastrointestinal lesions. Health promotion campaigns targeting the specific group of individuals identified in our study will be helpful for improvement of the adherence of UGC screening in population‐based cancer screening programs. Topics discussed include reports of multistage plate subduction and collision activities in Tongbai-Dabie area, hydrothermal alteration and mineralization stages, and origin of ore-forming fluids from mixing of magmatic and meteoric water.

Rapid economic growth and urbanization have contributed to increasing concerns around sustainable development in China. Although urban sustainable development is often comprised of environmental, economic, social and governance aspects, most empirical studies on the public perception of sustainability have exclusively focused on the environmental aspect. Using extensive survey data from three representative cities in Henan Province, China, this study is a first endeavor to examine how perceptions of urban sustainability performance and concerns vary by demographic and socio‐economic status of local residents. This study documents that familiarity with sustainable development concepts is positively associated with education, income, party affiliation and personal health of individuals, while negatively correlated with age. In addition, this study has shown that the most severe threats to sustainability as perceived by citizens are air pollution, corruption, income and education inequality, and excessive industrial production. At the same time, economic indicators such as unemployment, poverty and consumerism are considered lesser threats than social inequality or environmental pollution. Furthermore, residents generally view the sustainable development performance of their cities as mediocre. While generally younger residents and residents with higher levels of education tend to be more critical and long‐term residents tend to be more forgiving, results frequently show that concerns and attitudes towards sustainable development by various socio‐demographic groups differ from city to city. The article presents a case study conducted in Henan province in China in order to examine the impact of government investment and agricultural policies in china. Henan province plays a critical role in the national grain balance, accounting for 27 percent of total wheat and 10 percent of maize outputs in China. It has been found in this study that non-price factors such as local climate condition, irrigation and infrastructure are also important measures of encouraging crop production.

Yangshao pottery sherds dated to c. 4200 bc from two archaeological sites in Henan province, China, were examined to determine the technological aspects of their decoration. The selected samples comprised plain and painted pottery, some of which have a white background slip and black or red decoration on the surface. Various analytical techniques including SEM/EDS, XRD and FTIR were applied in the study. Observations show that some pieces were wheel-thrown. The refinement of the body fabric varies. Surface finishing includes simple burnishing, slipping and brushing. The black decoration on the surface is manganese black. The white background layer is kaolinitic clay slip. No organic binders or decorations were detected. The results of these analyses will help our understanding of the production steps involved in the craft production of Yangshao pottery. Topics include secondary fractures in the mine area as the main ore-controlling structures, REE distribution patterns of Au-bearing pyrite in the main mineralization stage associated with REE compositions, and host rocks as the source of metallogenetic materials.

Following the end Ordovician mass extinction, brachiopod faunas were commonly of low diversity, generally rare in abundance, and restricted to shallow‐water environments in many places. The Cathaysiorthis fauna, first described from South East China, is the most diverse brachiopod fauna in the world succeeding the Hirnantia fauna, and has modified our previous views on the recovery of shelly benthos after the extinctions. Here, we report a newly‐discovered fauna with abundant Cathaysiorthis from the lower Zhangwan Formation (lower–middle Rhuddanian, lower Llandovery) in Qinling, Xichuan County, Henan Province, China. This fauna is slightly younger than that previously documented from South East China, and the evolution of Cathaysiorthis fauna, in terms of its composition, is discussed. The Qinling Cathaysiorthis fauna has a narrower bathymetric range (Benthic Assemblage Zone 3) than that of the fauna from South East China (BA 2–5) and occurred on the Qinling–Dabie Microplate located on the northwest margin of the South China Plate. The migration of the Cathaysiorthis fauna from the South China plate to Qinling–Dabie was achieved by larvae that used ambient ocean currents and possibly drifted from the Jiangnan Region of South East China to Qinling. The Qinling Cathaysiorthis fauna includes 13 species belonging to 12 genera. Two new species, Cathaysiorthis xichuanensis sp. nov. and Aegiria apta sp. nov. are established and described herein, and ten other species are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
