Oil–paper insulation is the critical insulation element in the modern power system. Under a harsh operating environment, oil–paper insulation will deteriorate gradually, resulting in electrical accidents. Thus, it is important to evaluate and monitor the insulation state of oil–paper insulation. Firstly, this paper introduces the geometric structure and physical components of oil–paper insulation and shows the main reasons and forms of oil–paper insulation's degradation. Then, this paper reviews the existing condition assessment techniques for oil–paper insulation, such as the dissolved gas ratio analysis, aging kinetic model, cellulose–water adsorption isotherm, oil–paper moisture balance curve, and dielectric response technique. Additionally, the advantages and limitations of the above condition assessment techniques are discussed. In particular, this paper highlights the dielectric response technique and introduces its evaluation principle in detail: (1) collecting the dielectric response data, (2) extracting the feature parameters from the collected dielectric response data, and (3) establishing the condition assessment models based on the extracted feature parameters and the machine learning techniques. Finally, two full potential studies are proposed, which research hotspots' oil–paper insulation and the electrical–chemical joint evaluation technique. The present study is an evaluation of published papers on machine learning as employed in mastitis research. The aim of this study was the quantitative evaluation of the scientific content and the bibliometric details of these papers. In total, 69 papers were found to combine machine learning in mastitis research and were considered in detail. There was a progressive yearly increase in published papers, which originated from 23 countries (mostly from China or the United States of America). Most original articles (n = 59) referred to work involving cattle, relevant to mastitis in individual animals. Most articles described work related to the development and diagnosis of the infection. Fewer articles described work on the antibiotic resistance of pathogens isolated from cases of mastitis and on the treatment of the infection. In most studies (98.5% of published papers), supervised machine learning models were employed. Most frequently, decision trees and support vector machines were employed in the studies described. 'Machine learning' and 'mastitis' were the most frequently used keywords. The papers were published in 39 journals, with most frequent publications in Computers and Electronics in Agriculture and Journal of Dairy Science. The median number of cited references in the papers was 39 (interquartile range: 31). There were 435 co-authors in the papers (mean: 6.2 per paper, median: 5, min.–max.: 1–93) and 356 individual authors. The median number of citations received by the papers was 4 (min.–max.: 0–70). Most papers (72.5%) were published in open-access mode. This study summarized the characteristics of papers on mastitis and artificial intelligence. Future studies could explore using these methodologies at farm level, and extending them to other animal species, while unsupervised learning techniques might also prove to be useful. Since the fusing process in electrophotography has a significant impact not only on printing quality but also on machine internal temperature and toner blocking on outlet tray, accurate paper temperature prediction for various types of papers is essential, especially in the production printing. To develop the thermophysical model of fusing process to predict the paper temperature after the fusing process, thermal properties such as thermal conductivity, specific heat, and thermal contact resistance of several types of papers are necessary. However, paper is composed of complex fiber, surface coating, filler, and moisture, making it difficult to measure thermophysical properties of paper accurately. This work developed a machine learning (ML) model that can predict the thermophysical properties of paper based on a conventionally used 1D thermal network model of the fusing process and experiment results. The thermophysical properties of each paper obtained by ML and the thermophysical properties obtained by the conventional method were input to the thermal network model to predict the paper temperature after the fusing process and compared with the measured paper temperatures of the experiment. The results showed that the paper temperature was predicted with higher accuracy by using thermophysical properties obtained by ML than that by the conventional method. Although the method for predicting paper temperature by using only ML had been proposed, it had the disadvantage of requiring a large number of training experiments. In contrast, this method trained under the conditions of one fusing temperature and two printing speeds, and was able to predict under five fusing temperatures and four printing speeds. This research presents a development of a new Paper Screening Tool (PST) aimed at increasing the efficiency and accuracy of the literature screening phase. Leveraging the NPL processing techniques this PST and reduces a lot of manual efforts. Through comprehensive evaluation using a diverse dataset, the tools provide high precision. The PST also has user friendly interfaces and customizable report generation which empowers the researchers screening process to their specific needs. Paper mills, companies that write scientific papers and gain acceptance for them, then sell authorships of these papers, present a key challenge in medicine and other healthcare fields. This challenge is becoming more acute with artificial intelligence (AI), where AI writes the manuscripts and then the paper mills sell the authorships of these papers. The aim of the current research is to provide a method for detecting fake papers. The method reported in this article uses a machine learning approach to create decision trees to identify fake papers. The data were collected from Web of Science and multiple journals in various fields. The article presents a method to identify fake papers based on the results of decision trees. Use of this method in a case study indicated its effectiveness in identifying a fake paper. This method to identify fake papers is applicable for authors, editors, and publishers across fields to investigate a single paper or to conduct an analysis of a group of manuscripts. Clinicians and others can use this method to evaluate articles they find in a search to ensure they are not fake articles and instead report actual research that was peer reviewed prior to publication in a journal. The rapid discrimination of bacteria is currently an emerging trend in the fields of food safety, medical detection, and environmental observation. Traditional methods often require lengthy culturing processes, specialized analytical equipment, and bacterial recognition receptors. In response to this need, we have developed a paper-based fluorescence sensor array platform for identifying different bacteria. The sensor array is based on three unique carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as sensing units, each modified with a different antibiotic (polymyxin B, ampicillin, and gentamicin). These antibiotic-modified CQDs can aggregate on the bacterial surface, triggering aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching. The sensor array exhibits varying fluorescent responses to different bacterial species. To achieve low-cost and portable detection, CQDs were formulated into fluorescent ink and used with an inkjet printer to manufacture paper-based sensor arrays. A smartphone was used to collect the responses generated by the bacteria and platform. Diverse machine learning algorithms were utilized to discriminate bacterial types. Our findings showcase the platform's remarkable capability to differentiate among five bacterial strains, within a detection range spanning from 1.0 × 103 CFU/mL to 1.0 × 107 CFU/mL. Its practicality is further validated through the accurate identification of blind bacterial samples. It is difficult to predict index values or stock prices with a single financial formula. They are affected by many factors, such as political conditions, global economy, unexpected events, market anomalies, and the characteristics of the relevant companies, and many computer science techniques are being used to make more accurate predictions about them. This study aimed to predict the values of the XKAGT index by using the monthly closing values of the Borsa Istanbul (BIST) Forestry, Paper and Printing (XKAGT) index between 2002 and 2023, and the machine learning techniques artificial neural networks (ANN), random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and gradient boosting machine (GBM). Furthermore, the performances of four machine learning techniques were compared. Factors affecting stock prices are generally classified as macroeconomic and microeconomic factors. As a result of examining the studies on determining the macroeconomic factors affecting the stock markets, 10 macroeconomic factors were determined as input. The macroeconomic variables used were crude oil price, exchange rate of USD/TRY, dollar index, BIST100 index, gold price, money supply (M2), S&P 500 index, US 10-year bond interest, export-import coverage rate in the forest products sector, and deposits interest rate. It was determined that all machine learning techniques used in the study performed successfully in predicting the index value, but the k-nearest neighbor algorithm showed the best performance with R2=0.996, RMSE=71.36, and a MAE of 40.8. Therefore, in line with the current variables, investors can make analyzes using any of the ANN, RF, KNN, and GBM techniques to predict the future index value, which will lead them to accurate results. This paper reflects the research to design and application the complex method to evaluate the quality of the paper written in the IMRaD format. As a field we choose Russian segment of the financial technologies area since we had interest to use multilingual language model. The method covers paper's relevance to the chosen field and internal topics, the actuality, relation between parts, text borrowing, and experiment part. The clustering and classifying algorithms, and language machine learning model were used. The experimental part based on corpus of Russian papers shows the deviation of method's recommendations from expert opinion not more than 20%. The growth of artificial intelligence combined with the collection and storage of large amounts of data in the electronic medical record collection has created an opportunity for orthopedic research and translation into the clinical environment. Machine learning (ML) is a type of artificial intelligence tool well suited for processing the large amount of available data. Specific areas of ML frequently used by orthopedic surgeons performing total joint arthroplasty include tabular data analysis (spreadsheets), medical imaging processing, and natural language processing (extracting concepts from text). Previous studies have discussed models able to identify fractures in radiographs, identify implant type in radiographs, and determine the stage of osteoarthritis based on walking analysis. Despite the growing popularity of ML, there are limitations including its reliance on "good" data, potential for overfitting, long life cycle for creation, and ability to only perform one narrow task. Forecasting has extreme importance in industry due to the numerous competitive advantages that it provides, allowing to foresee what might happen and adjust management decisions accordingly. Industries increasingly use sensors, which allow for large-scale data collection. Big datasets enable training, testing and application of complex predictive algorithms based on machine learning models. The present paper focuses on predicting values from sensors installed on a pulp paper press, using data collected over three years. The variables analyzed are electric current, pressure, temperature, torque, oil level and velocity. The results of XGBoost and artificial neural networks, with different feature vectors, are compared. Identifying factors that associate with more cited or higher quality research may be useful to improve science or to support research evaluation. This article reviews evidence for the existence of such factors in article text and metadata. It also reviews studies attempting to estimate article quality or predict long‐term citation counts using statistical regression or machine learning for journal articles or conference papers. Although the primary focus is on document‐level evidence, the related task of estimating the average quality scores of entire departments from bibliometric information is also considered. The review lists a huge range of factors that associate with higher quality or more cited research in some contexts (fields, years, journals) but the strength and direction of association often depends on the set of papers examined, with little systematic pattern and rarely any cause‐and‐effect evidence. The strongest patterns found include the near universal usefulness of journal citation rates, author numbers, reference properties, and international collaboration in predicting (or associating with) higher citation counts, and the greater usefulness of citation‐related information for predicting article quality in the medical, health and physical sciences than in engineering, social sciences, arts, and humanities. The utilization of electrochemical detection techniques in paper-based analytical devices (PADs) has revolutionized point-of-care (POC) testing, enabling the precise and discerning measurement of a diverse array of (bio)chemical analytes. The application of electrochemical sensing and paper as a suitable substrate for point-of-care testing platforms has led to the emergence of electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs). The inherent advantages of these modified paper-based analytical devices have gained significant recognition in the POC field. In response, electrochemical biosensors assembled from paper-based materials have shown great promise for enhancing sensitivity and improving their range of use. In addition, paper-based platforms have numerous advantageous characteristics, including the self-sufficient conveyance of liquids, reduced resistance, minimal fabrication cost, and environmental friendliness. This study seeks to provide a concise summary of the present state and uses of ePADs with insightful commentary on their practicality in the field. Future developments in ePADs biosensors include developing novel paper-based systems, improving system performance with a novel biocatalyst, and combining the biosensor system with other cutting-edge tools such as machine learning and 3D printing. The clinical spectrum of atrial fibrillation means that a patient-individualized approach is required to ensure optimal treatment. Cardiac computed tomography can accurately delineate atrial structure and function and could contribute to a personalized care pathway for atrial fibrillation patients. The imaging modality offers excellent spatial resolution and has been utilised in pre-, peri- and post-procedural care for patients with atrial fibrillation. Advances in temporal resolution, acquisition times and analysis techniques suggest potential expanding roles for cardiac computed tomography in the future management of patients with atrial fibrillation. The aim of the current review is to discuss the use of cardiac computed tomography in atrial fibrillation in pre-, peri- and post-procedural settings. Potential future applications of cardiac computed tomography including atrial wall thickness assessment and epicardial fat volume quantification are discussed together with emerging analysis techniques including computational modelling and machine learning with attention paid to how these developments may contribute to a personalized approach to atrial fibrillation management. The printing process of box packaging paper can generate volatile organic compounds, resulting in odors that impact product quality and health. An efficient, objective, and cost-effective detection method is urgently needed. We utilized a self-developed electronic nose system to test four different cigarette packaging paper samples. Employing multivariate statistical methods like Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Statistical Quality Control (SQC), and Similarity-based Independent Modeling of Class Analogy (SIMCA), we analyzed and processed the collected data. Comprehensive evaluation and quality control models were constructed to assess sample stability and distinguish odors. Results indicate that our electronic nose system rapidly detects odors and effectively performs quality control. By establishing models for quality stability control, we successfully identified samples with acceptable quality and those with odors. To further validate the system's performance and extend its applications, we collected two types of cigarette packaging paper samples with odor data. Using data augmentation techniques, we expanded the dataset and achieved an accuracy rate of 0.9938 through classification and discrimination. In the recent years, the academic paper influence analysis has been widely studied due to its potential applications in the multiple areas of science information metric and retrieval. By identifying the academic influence of papers, authors, etc., we can directly support researchers to easily reach academic papers. These recommended candidate papers are not only highly relevant with their desired research topics but also highly-attended by the research community within these topics. For very recent years, the rapid developments of academic networks, like Google Scholar, Research Gate, CiteSeerX, etc., have significantly boosted the number of new published papers annually. It also helps to strengthen the borderless cooperation between researchers who are interested on the same research topics. However, these current academic networks still lack the capabilities of provisioning researchers deeper into most-influenced papers. They also largely ignore quite/irrelevant papers, which are not fully related with their current interest topics. Moreover, the distributions of topics within these academic papers are considered as varying and it is difficult to extract the main concentrated topics in these papers. Thus, it leads to challenges for researchers to find their appropriated/high-qualified reference resources while doing researches. To overcome this limitation, in this paper, we proposed a novel approach of paper influence analysis through their content-based and citation relationship-based analyses within the biographical network. In order to effectively extract the topic-based relevance from papers, we apply the integrated graph-based citation relationship analysis with topic modeling approach to automatically learn the distributions of keyword-based labeled topics in forms of unsupervised learning approach, named as TopCite. Then, we base on the constructed graph-based paper–topic structure to identify their relevancy levels. Upon the identified relevancy levels between papers, we can support for improving the accuracy performance of other bibliographic network mining tasks, such as paper similarity measurement, recommendation, etc. Extensive experiments in real-world AMiner bibliographic dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed ideas in this paper. The rise of social media has significantly influenced scholarly communication, knowledge dissemination, and research evaluation, leading to the enrichment of alternative metrics (altmetrics) for evaluating academic papers' social impact, which assesses the social impact of academic papers through online activities, including reading, bookmarking, downloading, and commenting. However, these altmetrics often focus on the number of mentions on social media rather than thoroughly evaluating the source, content, and dissemination of these mentions. To address this gap, this study introduces the social media impact altmetric (SMIAltmetric), which is based on 44,087 publications and 860,680 tweets (now "posts"), a comprehensive scoring system for evaluating scientific papers on Twitter (now "X"), using diverse features, including literature-related, social media engagement-related, user-related, and content-related features. Employing Altmetric Attention Acores (AAS) as labels, we tested eight machine learning algorithms, with XGBoost demonstrating the highest accuracy at 0.8672. Crucial factors influencing SMIAltmetric, as identified by the SHAP value, were followers, retweets, mentions, and citation. Furthermore, consistency analysis and convergent validation between the proposed SMIAltmetric and AAS confirm the reliability and finer differentiation of SMIAltmetric. The proposed SMIAltmetric provides a more comprehensive understanding of a paper's social media impact, enhancing the evaluation of scientific discourse and its engagement with society. Herein, the challenge of accurately classifying the manufacturing origin of printing paper, including continent, country, and specific product, was addressed. One-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) models trained on infrared (IR) spectrum data acquired from printing paper samples were used for the task. The preprocessing of the IR spectra through a second-derivative transformation and the restriction of the spectral range to 1800 to 1200 cm-1 improved the classification performance of the model. The outcomes were highly promising. Models trained on second-derivative IR spectra in the 1800 to 1200-cm-1 range exhibited perfect classification for the manufacturing continent and country, with an impressive F1 score of 0.980 for product classification. Notably, the developed 1D CNN model outperformed traditional machine learning classifiers, such as support vector machines and feed-forward neural networks. In addition, the application of data point attribution enhanced the transparency of the decision-making process of the model, offering insights into the spectral patterns that affect classification. The evaluation and classification of chemical properties in different copypaper products could significantly help address document forgery. This study analyzes the feasibility of utilizing infrared spectroscopy in conjunction with machine learning algorithms for classifying copy-paper products. A dataset comprising 140 infrared spectra of copy-paper samples was collected. The classification models employed in this study include partial least squares-discriminant analysis, support vector machine, and K-nearest neighbors. The key findings indicate that a classification model based on the use of attenuated-total-reflection infrared spectroscopy demonstrated good performance, highlighting its potential as a valuable tool in accurately classifying paper products and ensuring assisting in solving criminal cases involving document forgery. In the Late Middle Ages, Italy's most important centre of paper mill was located in the town of Fabriano (Marche region, Italy). Here, a selection of ten Italian Late Middle Ages watermarked papers belonging to the Corpus Chartarum Italicarum (Corpus of Italian papers) is characterised by elemental and molecular spectroscopies and collected data are analysed by Machine Learning (ML) to trace the local fabrication recipes and the geographical paper mills production. Data from portable X-ray fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were analysed through Singular Vector Machine, Soft Independent Modeling of Class Analogy and Moving Blocks methods. This innovative ML spatial-temporal approach based on keeping the temporal variable fixed is used to find elemental benchmarks for classifying the watermarked Italian notarial catalogue of the Late Middle Ages finding differences in the local recipes and studying the homogeneity in the paper mills' production. Results show that watermarked paper from Northern Italy, from the town of Strozza, Piacenza and Bergamo , as well as Bologna, present a high elemental and molecular homogeneity, which indicates that the hand-made processing technique could be the same helped by the proximity of the three cities, starting point for technologies exchange or influence. No heavy metals are found in the watermarked paper and K, Ca, Fe and Zn are identified as elemental benchmarks. Pre-evaluating scientific paper quality aids in alleviating peer review pressure and fostering scientific advancement. Although prior studies have identified numerous quality-related features, their effectiveness and representativeness of paper content remain to be comprehensively investigated. Addressing this issue, we propose a content-based interpretable method for pre-evaluating the quality of scientific papers. Firstly, we define quality attributes of computer science (CS) papers as integrity , clarity , novelty , and significance , based on peer review criteria from 11 top-tier CS conferences. We formulate the problem as two classification tasks: Accepted/Disputed/Rejected (ADR) and Accepted/Rejected (AR). Subsequently, we construct fine-grained features from metadata and knowledge entity networks, including text structure, readability, references, citations, semantic novelty, and network structure. We empirically evaluate our method using the ICLR paper dataset, achieving optimal performance with the Random Forest model, yielding F1 scores of 0.715 and 0.762 for the two tasks, respectively. In this study, by collecting a data set containing 13, 066 papers published between 2016 and 2020 from Nature communications with open peer review reports, we aim to examine how textual features embedded within the peer review reports of papers that reflect the reviewers' emotions may predict the papers to be TCPs. We compiled a list of 15 textual features and classified them into three categories: peer review features, linguistic features, and sentiment features. We then chose the XGBoost machine learning model with the best performance in predicting TCPs, and utilized the explainable artificial intelligence techniques SHAP to interpret the role of feature importance on the prediction results. The distribution of feature importance ranking results demonstrates that sentiment features play a crucial role in determining papers' potential to be highly cited. This conclusion still holds, even when the ranking of the feature importance changes in the subgroup analysis of dividing the samples into four disciplines (biological sciences, health sciences, physical sciences, and earth and environmental sciences), as well as two groups based on whether reviewers' identities were revealed. The growth in academic and scientific publications has increased very rapidly. Researchers must choose a representative and significant literature for their research, which has become challenging worldwide. Usually, the paper citation number indicates this paper's potential influence and importance. However, this standard metric of citation numbers is not suitable to assess the popularity and significance of recently published papers. To address this challenge, this study presents an effective prediction method called FutureCite to predict the future citation level of research articles. FutureCite integrates machine learning with text and graph mining techniques, leveraging their abilities in classification, datasets in-depth analysis, and feature extraction. FutureCite aims to predict future citation levels of research articles applying a multilabel classification approach. FutureCite can extract significant semantic features and capture the interconnection relationships found in scientific articles during feature extraction using textual content, citation networks, and metadata as feature resources. This study's objective is to contribute to the advancement of effective approaches impacting the citation counts in scientific publications by enhancing the precision of future citations. We conducted several experiments using a comprehensive publication dataset to evaluate our method and determine the impact of using a variety of machine learning algorithms. This article is an interview with Jake Turley, the first author of a paper published in Development. The paper discusses the use of deep learning models to analyze large imaging datasets from Drosophila pupa and quantify the contributions of different cell behaviors during wound healing. Turley, a mathematician by training, developed deep learning tools for automated quantification of aspects of cell biology in wound healing. The research aims to understand how individual cells work together to repair a hole in the epidermis. Turley's algorithms measured the contributions of cell shape changes, cell migration, and cell divisions to the overall effort of wound re-epithelialization. Highly cited papers are influenced by external factors that are not directly related to the document's intrinsic quality. In this study, 50 characteristics for measuring the performance of 68 highly cited papers, from the Journal of The American Medical Informatics Association indexed in Web of Science (WOS), from 2009 to 2019 were investigated. In the first step, a Pearson correlation analysis is performed to eliminate variables with zero or weak correlation with the target ("dependent") variable (number of citations in WOS). Consequently, 32 variables are selected for the next step. By applying the Ridge technique, 13 features show a positive effect on the number of citations. Using three different algorithms, i.e., Ridge, Lasso, and Boruta, 6 factors appear to be the most relevant ones. The "Number of citations by international researchers", "Journal self-citations in citing documents", and "Authors' self-citations in citing documents", are recognized as the most important features by all three methods here used. The "First author's scientific age", "Open-access paper", and "Number of first author's citations in WOS" are identified as the important features of highly cited papers by only two methods, Ridge and Lasso. Notice that we use specific machine learning algorithms as feature selection methods (Ridge, Lasso, and Boruta) to identify the most important features of highly cited papers, tools that had not previously been used for this purpose. In conclusion, we re-emphasize the performance resulting from such algorithms. Moreover, we do not advise authors to seek to increase the citations of their articles by manipulating the identified performance features. This study conducts an analysis of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) applications in natural disaster prediction using a scientometric approach. The Web of Science Core Collection served as the primary data source, yielding 38,456 records spanning from 2003 to 2022. The analysis concentrated on highly influential research, defined by papers garnering 100 or more citations, resulting in a final set of 1,637 publications. VOSviewer software facilitated the exploration of collaboration patterns among authors, institutions, and countries, along with the identification of emerging research topics and the most impactful articles. These highly cited papers were distributed across various sources (625). A total of 443,502 citations were counted, with an average of 270.92 citations per document. Interestingly, the average annual citation growth rate exhibited a negative trend (-1.02%), suggesting a potential shift in citation patterns over time. The average document age of 6.9 years indicates that the majority of the research is relatively recent. Collaboration emerges as a prominent feature within the field, with an average of 5.09 co-authors per document and 46.55% of collaborations being international. This underscores the collaborative nature inherent in research within this domain. Scholarly articles (1263) represent the predominant document type, followed by reviews (323), indicative of the field's solid foundation in peer-reviewed literature. The study's findings hold significant implications for future research and practical applications, identifying gaps in the literature and underscoring the necessity for further exploration in developing AI and ML models tailored to specific types of natural disasters, as well as assessing these models in real-world scenarios. Considering the demand for the optimization of the technical factors of spraying for a greater area coverage and minimal drift, field tests were carried out to determine the interaction between the area coverage, number of droplets per cm2, droplet diameter, and drift. The studies were conducted with two different types of sprayers (axial and radial fan) in an apple orchard and a vineyard. The technical factors of the spraying interactions were nozzle type (ISO code 015, code 02, and code 03), working speed (6 and 8 km h−1), and spraying norm (250–400 L h−1). The airflow of both sprayers was adjusted to the plantation leaf mass and the working pressure was set for each repetition separately. A method using water-sensitive paper and a digital image analysis was used to collect data on coverage factors. The data from the field research were processed using four machine learning models: quantile random forest (QRF), support vector regression with radial basis function kernel (SVR), Bayesian Regularization for Feed-Forward Neural Networks (BRNN), and Ensemble Machine Learning (ENS). Nozzle type had the highest predictive value for the properties of number of droplets per cm2 (axial = 69.1%; radial = 66.0%), droplet diameter (axial = 30.6%; radial = 38.2%), and area coverage (axial = 24.6%; radial = 34.8%). Spraying norm had the greatest predictive value for area coverage (axial = 43.3%; radial = 26.9%) and drift (axial = 72.4%; radial = 62.3%). Greater coverage of the treated area and a greater number of droplets were achieved with the radial sprayer, as well as less drift. The accuracy of the machine learning model for the prediction of the treated surface showed a satisfactory accuracy for most properties (R2 = 0.694–0.984), except for the estimation of the droplet diameter for an axial sprayer (R2 = 0.437–0.503). User-friendly in-field sensing protocol is crucial for the effective tracing of intended analytes under less-developed countries or resources-limited environments. Nevertheless, existing sensing strategies require professional technicians and expensive laboratory-based instrumentations, which are not capable for point-of-care on-site analyses. To address this issue, artificial intelligence handheld sensor has been designed for direct reading of Ni2+ and EDTA in food samples. The sensing platform incorporates smartphone with machine learning-driven application, 3D-printed handheld device, and cellulose paper microfluidic chip stained with ratiometric red-green-emission carbon dots (CDs). Intriguingly, Ni2+ introduction makes green fluorescent (FL) of CDs glow but red FL fade because of the coordination of Ni2+ with CDs verified by density functional theory (DFT), concurrently manifesting continuous FL colour transition from red to green. Subsequent addition of EDTA renders FL of CDs-Ni2+ recover owing to the capture of Ni2+ from CDs by EDTA based on strong chelation effect of EDTA on Ni2+ confirmed via DFT, accompanying with a noticeable colour returning from green to red. Inspired by above FL phenomena, CDs-based cellulose paper microfluidic chips are first fabricated to facilitate point-of-care testing of Ni2+ and EDTA. Designed fully-automatic handheld sensor is utilized to directly output Ni2+ and EDTA concentration in water, milk, spinach, bread, and shampoo based on wide linear ranges of 0–48 μM and 0–96 μM, and low limits of detection of 0.274 μM and 0.624 μM, respectively. The deterioration of fiber properties during recycling processes, especially the loss of tensile strength, raises concerns that paper products made from recycled fibers might not satisfy quality requirements. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the deterioration of tensile strength and the damage in paper sheets made of recycled fibers using the theory of damage mechanics and machine learning methods. Experiments were carried out to recycle wood fibers and nonwood fibers four times, and the physicochemical properties of the handsheets made from these fibers were measured after each recycling. Water retention value and relative bonded area were selected as the features to estimate and predict tensile strength during recycling because they had strong correlations with tensile strength. This paper proposed a damage index to quantitatively express the severity of the damage in paper sheets based on the experimental investigation and the theory of damage mechanics. Thus, the deterioration of tensile strength could be estimated and predicted. To determine the damage index, a curve fitting model based on the hyperbolic theory of pulp properties was developed. The proposed quantitative expression of the damage index is: D = (Ds - h)²/a2 - (Dh - k)²/b2, where the coefficients were determined through the curve fitting model. This paper also developed a long short-term memory recurrent neural network model to determine the damage index according to the sequence of recycling. Both models were trained with the experimental data of water retention value and relative bonded area. The estimation and prediction by the curve fitting model were more accurate than those of the neural network model. The root mean square errors by the curve fitting model were 0.0278 for estimation, 0.1667 for prediction; and by the neural network model were 0.2445 for estimation, 0.2206 for prediction, respectively. Real-world information is often characterized by uncertainty and partial reliability, which led Zadeh to introduce the concept of Z-numbers as a more appropriate formal structure for describing such information. However, the computation of Z-numbers requires solving highly complex optimization problems, limiting their practical application. Although linguistic Z-numbers have been explored for their computational straightforwardness, they lack theoretical support from Z-number theory and exhibit certain limitations. To address these issues and provide theoretical support from Z-numbers, we propose a Z-number linguistic term set to facilitate more efficient processing of Z-number-based information. Specifically, we redefine linguistic Z-numbers as Z-number linguistic terms. By analyzing the hidden probability density functions of these terms, we identify patterns for ranking them. These patterns are used to define the Z-number linguistic term set, which includes all Z-number linguistic terms sorted in order. We also discuss the basic operators between these terms. Furthermore, we develop a multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) model based on the Z-number linguistic term set. Applying our method to predict the acceptance of academic papers, we demonstrate its effectiveness and superiority. We compare the performance of our MCGDM method with five existing Z-number-based MCGDM methods and eight traditional machine learning clustering algorithms. Our results show that the proposed method outperforms others in terms of accuracy and time consumption, highlighting the potential of Z-number linguistic terms for enhancing Z-number computation and extending the application of Z-number-based information to real-world problems. This research highlights the underestimated significance of cigarette paper as evidence at crime scenes. The primary objective is to distinguish cigarette paper from similar-looking alternatives, addressing the first research objective. The second objective involves identifying cigarette paper brands using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and machine learning (ML) algorithms. Accurate differentiation of cigarette paper from normal paper is emphasized. Conjecture about the weak replicability in social sciences has made scholars eager to quantify the scale and scope of replication failure for a discipline. Yet small-scale manual replication methods alone are ill-suited to deal with this big data problem. Here, we conduct a discipline-wide replication census in science. Our sample (N= 14,126 papers) covers nearly all papers published in the six top-tier Psychology journals over the past 20 y. Using a validated machine learning model that estimates a paper's likelihood of replication, we found evidence that both supports and refutes speculations drawn from a relatively small sample of manual replications. First, we find that a single overall replication rate of Psychology poorly captures the varying degree of replicability among subfields. Second, we find that replication rates are strongly correlated with research methods in all subfields. Experiments replicate at a significantly lower rate than do non-experimental studies. Third, we find that authors' cumulative publication number and citation impact are positively related to the likelihood of replication, while other proxies of research quality and rigor, such as an author's university prestige and a paper's citations, are unrelated to replicability. Finally, contrary to the ideal that media attention should cover replicable research, we find that media attention is positively related to the likelihood of replication failure. One of the most widely used measures of scientific impact is the number of citations. However, due to its heavy-tailed distribution, citations are fundamentally difficult to predict but can be improved. This study was aimed at investigating the factors and parts influencing the citation number of a scientific paper in the otology field. Therefore, this work proposes a new solution that utilizes machine learning and natural language processing to process English text and provides a paper citation as the predicted results. Different algorithms are implemented in this solution, such as linear regression, boosted decision tree, decision forest, and neural networks. The application of neural network regression revealed that papers' abstracts have more influence on the citation numbers of otological articles. This new solution has been developed in visual programming using Microsoft Azure machine learning at the back end and Programming Without Coding Technology at the front end. Handmade paper is a major carrier and restoration material of traditional Chinese ancient books, calligraphies, and paintings. In this study, we carried out a Raman spectroscopy analysis of 18 types of handmade paper samples. The main components of the handmade paper were cellulose and lignin, according to the wavenumber and Raman vibration assignment. We divided its Raman spectrum into eight subbands. Five machine learning models were employed: principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares (PLS), support vector machine (SVM), k‐nearest neighbors (KNN), and random forest (RF). The Raman spectral data were normalized, and the fluorescence envelope was subtracted using the airPLS algorithm to obtain four types of data, raw, normalized, defluorescence, and fluorescence data. An RF variable importance analysis of data processing showed that data normalization eliminated the intensity differences of fluorescence signals caused by lignin, which contained important information of raw materials and papermaking technology, let alone the data defluorescence. The data processing also reduced the importance of the average variables in almost all spectral bands. Nevertheless, the data processing is worthwhile because it significantly improves the accuracy of machine learning, and the information loss does not affect the prediction. Using the machine learning models of PCA, PLS, and SVM combined with linear regression (LR), KNN, and RF, the classification and prediction of handmade paper samples were realized. For almost all processed data, including the fluorescence data, PCA‐LR had the highest classification and prediction accuracy (R2 = 1) in almost all spectral bands. PLS‐LR and SVM‐LR had the second‐highest accuracies (R2 = 0.4–0.9), whereas KNN and RF had the lowest accuracies (R2 = 0.1–0.4) for full band spectral data. Our results suggest that the abundant information contained in Raman spectroscopy combined with powerful machine learning models could inspire further studies on handmade paper and related cultural relics. Over the years the number of research publications per year is growing exponentially. Finding research papers of quality from the massive literature of relevant articles is a challenging and time-consuming task. The approaches in the latest literature address citation recommendation by utilizing large bibliographic information and use machine learning and deep learning methods for the task. These techniques clearly require a large amount of training data as well as machines with high processing power. To overcome these issues, we propose a novel method by modifying the popular hyperlink induced topic search (HITS), a web page ranking algorithm, as citation recommendation using hyperlink induced topic search (CR-HITS) that works on a directed and weighted heterogeneous bibliographic network containing diverse types of nodes and edges. We define effective scoring schemes for nodes and edges based on basic bibliographic information like citations of papers, number of publications of an author, etc. Given a few seed papers, the citation recommendation algorithm CR-HITS is run on small neighborhoods of the seed papers and hence the time taken by the execution is very small to yield the final recommendations. To the best of our knowledge, HITS has been used for the first time for the citation recommendation problem. We perform extensive experimentation on DBLP (version-11) and ACM (version-9) datasets and compare the results with many baseline methods in terms of MAP, MRR, and recall@N measures. The performance of the proposed algorithms is superior with respect to the MAP metric and matches the second best for the other two metrics. Since the top two algorithms use deep learning methods and use much larger bibliographic information including abstracts of the papers, we claim that our approach utilizes very low resources, yet yields recommendations that are very close to the top recommendations. The number of scientific papers has been increasing ever more rapidly. Researchers have to spend a lot of time classifying papers relevant to their study, especially into fine-grained subfields. However, almost all existing paper classification models are coarse-grained, which can not meet the needs of researchers. Observing this, we propose a lightweight fine-grained classification model for scientific paper. Dynamic weighting coefficients on feature words are incorporated into the model to improve the classification accuracy. The feature word weight is optimized by the Mean Decrease Accuracy (MDA) algorithm. Considering applicability, the lightweight processing is conducted through algorithm pruning and training sample pruning. Typically, these articles are authored by a large number of scientists with international collaboration. However, this could not be the only reason for an article to be highly cited, there might be several other characteristics for an article to be more attractive to researchers and readers. In other words, there are a few other characteristics that help articles/papers to be more than others to appear in search engines or to grab readers’ attention. In this study, we modeled several machine-learning methods with a set of articles, and journal characteristics including authors-count, title characteristics, abstract length, international collaboration, number of keywords, funding information, journal characteristics, etc. We extracted 20 characteristics and developed multiple machine-learning models to automate highly-cited papers recognition from regular papers. In experiments conducted with an ensemble machine learning algorithm, 97% recognition accuracy was achieved. Other algorithms including a deep learning method using LSTMs also achieved high recognition accuracy. Such high performances can be utilized for a promising HCP auto-detection system in the future.
