The building and construction industry is a key sector behind the ecological transition in that it is one of the main responsible factors in the consumption of natural resources. Thus, in line with circular economy, the use of waste aggregates in mortars is a possible solution to increase the sustainability of cement materials. In the present paper, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from bottle scraps (without chemical pretreatment) was used as aggregate in cement mortars to replace conventional sand aggregate (20%, 50% and 80% by weight). The fresh and hardened properties of the innovative mixtures proposed were evaluated through a multiscale physical-mechanical investigation. The main results of this study show the feasibility of the reuse of PET waste aggregates as substitutes for natural aggregates in mortars. The mixtures with bare PET resulted in less fluid than the specimens with sand; this was ascribed to the higher volume of the recycled aggregates with respect to sand. Moreover, PET mortars showed a high tensile strength and energy absorption capacity (with Rf = 1.9 ÷ 3.3 MPa, Rc = 6 ÷ 13 MPa); instead, sand samples were characterized by a brittle rupture. The lightweight specimens showed a thermal insulation increase ranging 65–84% with respect to the reference; the best results were obtained with 800 g of PET aggregate, characterized by a decrease in conductivity of approximately 86% concerning the control. Cities are critical to a sustainable future for our planet; still, the construction and operation of cities rely on intensive resource and energy use and transformation, leading to the generation of waste, effluents, and pollution, representing negative externalities outside and inside the city. Within every process, transformation implies the use of energy and the increase of entropy. In an urban system, the transformation of energy and materials will trigger the creation of entropic landscapes, mainly in the informal city and in unguarded natural landscapes, even hundreds of kilometers away, which generates substantial economic, social, and environmental impacts. In this sense, cities are significant contributors to the environmental crisis. Upstream, degradation of landscapes and ecosystems is frequent. Cities' externalities and exogenous consumptions are directly linked with entropy and entropic landscapes, which are recognized as pollution (in the air, water, and land) or waste and in the degradation of natural ecosystems and communities. Through a systematic review of existing literature, this paper first outlines briefly how entropy has been applied in different disciplines and then focuses on presenting recent developments of how entropy has been defined, used, and characterized in urban studies concerning sustainability in cities and architecture, and presents a definition of the concept in relation to urban systems and key aspects to consider. This paper examines the role of connectors in a fraud and corruption-prone environment of the circular economy. A qualitative approach and critical perspective were adopted. In the same line of thought, this study drew on narratives of fraud experiences from the Criminalistica Symposium between 2017 and 2022, as well as interviews with forensic accountants, auditing experts, and police investigators, to foment discourse analysis derived from Machiavellian theory. Thematic coding was selected for the presentation of results. Our findings lead us to the conclusion that there are five identified connector roles in an organization. The connectors have the role of mainly influencing acts of corporate fraud and corruption, which have the characteristics of a double-edged sword. Connectors serve as team motivators and sometimes as manipulators, and they also have the role of spearheading negotiations in tumultuous times of employee disorder and employers' disagreements, almost leading to uneasy truces. Additionally, in a bid to perpetrate fraud, the connector assists in the role of overriding controls. Inasmuch as it bears the trait of acting as an agent of knowledge building by facilitating learning and communication in organizations in a CE environment, this study contributes to the literature showing various roles of connectors in fraud schemes. Finally, bearing the originality, understanding the role of connectors in circular economy fraud and corruption schemes clarifies our path to expected wellbeing in the concept of sustainability in our ways of life in the coming decades attuned to policymakers and regulators. In recent years, new energy power generation has been widely used. As household energy storage will be widely promoted in the future, many households' energy storage will soon need to be replaced. It is of great significance to study the recycling of household energy storage to reduce environmental pollution and promote the sustainable development of the household energy storage market. However, the lack of research on the design of household energy storage and recovery network from the perspective of manufacturing enterprises hinders the sustainable development of household energy storage. Based on the above, a household energy storage recycling model considering carbon emissions was established in this paper. This model evaluated the recovery status of household energy storage online through a big data platform and proposed three different recovery schemes based on the evaluation results. Through a case study of Sichuan and Chongqing, the overall profit of the household energy storage and recycling system could be increased by about CNY 1.61 million, while reducing about 1.04 hundred tons of carbon emissions, thus verifying the feasibility and effectiveness of the model. In addition, the results of scenario analysis showed that the processing cost and demand are the main factors affecting the optimal design of the recycling network, and they can change the configuration of the network. Appropriate processing methods, locations, and transportation schemes would decrease the cost of production and carbon emissions. Household energy storage is possible for recycling residual values that decrease carbon emissions during storage. The idea of a circular economy (CE) has gained ground over the past ten years as a means of addressing sustainable development and getting around the limitations of the current and linear dominant production and consumption patterns. The primary goal of a CE is to encourage the adoption of closing-the-loop production methods to improve resource use efficiency, modify chemical processes, and increase product and material lifespan. According to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which focuses on 17 Sustainable Development Goals, 14 of which call for the appropriate application of green chemistry (GC) concepts and patterns, the role that chemistry may play in the shift toward more sustainable models is critical. By serving as the foundation for novel products made from renewable feedstocks and designed to be reused, recycled, or recovered with the associated minimum energy requirements, green and sustainable chemistry could be the key to unlocking the economic potential of the CE toward new product design and ultimately solving waste management problems. The aim of this perspective paper, while using a variety of literature sources, is to essentially capture the main issues associated with the CE and GC paradigms and how these two approaches can merge toward sustainable business models and the production of new materials. This integration focuses on reducing waste, conserving resources, and minimizing negative environmental impacts, while also considering economic viability. However, the obstacles to achieving implementation of the CE and GC principles are investment, environmental education, and legislation. To advance toward the circular economy and green chemistry, international agreements should be reconsidered to provide an appropriate framework, including the creation of incentives for businesses and individuals to adopt circular practices, the establishment of education programs to promote the benefits of circular practices, and the development of regulations to support the transition to sustainable production and consumption patterns. A lead acid battery is an old renewable battery that is usually discharged to deliver a high surge current to ignite a petrol-based engine. Nowadays, there are different improved versions of lead acid batteries that can deliver high energy densities with low maintenance costs. As the batteries are charged and discharged repeatedly over time, the amount of lead sulfate across the electrode plates grows, reducing the total surface areas of the plates and, thus, the rate of ionization between the electrolyte and the plate surfaces. The batteries then eventually come to the end of their service lives. Even with the improved versions, lead acid batteries are usually discarded at their retirement. However, if the retired batteries can be used for other purposes, the circular economy of the batteries can be improved significantly. It is therefore necessary to study the physical characteristics of the retired batteries and explore means of improving their charging and discharging capabilities. This paper presents research on improving the storage capability of retired lead acid batteries by applying different charging voltages across them. The results show that the electrode plates of the retired batteries become porous when a high charging voltage is applied, hence increasing the total surface area of the plate surfaces. The storage capability of the batteries is improved because the accumulated lead sulfate is removed from the electrode plates by the high charging voltage. As a result, the rate of ionization is increased, hence restoring the storing capability of the retired batteries to up to 71–89% of the original capacity rating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite their contributions to the financial efficiency and environmental sustainability of industrial processes, robotic assembly and disassembly have been understudied in the existing literature. This is in contradiction to their importance in realizing the Fourth Industrial Revolution. More specifically, although most of the literature has extensively discussed how to optimally assemble or disassemble given products, the role of other factors has been overlooked. For example, and among other factors, the choices of the robots involved in implementing the sequence plans, which should ideally be taken into account throughout the whole chain consisting of design, assembly, disassembly, and reassembly, may greatly affect the underlying implications with a considerable impact on the viability and effectiveness of the measures aimed at substantiating, realizing, and strengthening the backbones of a circular economy. Isolating the foregoing operations from the rest of the components of the relevant ecosystems may lead to erroneous inferences toward both the necessity and efficiency of the underlying procedures. In this paper, we try to alleviate these shortcomings by comprehensively investigating the state of the art in robotic assembly and disassembly. Waste management in the agricultural sector has become a major concern. Increased food production to satisfy the surge in population has resulted in the generation of large volumes of solid waste. Agro-waste is a rich source of biocompounds with high potential as a raw material for food packaging. Utilization of agro-waste supports the goal of sustainable development in a circular economy. This paper reviews recent trends and the development of agro-wastes from plant and animal sources into eco-friendly food packaging systems. Different plant and animal sources and their potential development into packaging are discussed, including crop residues, process residues, vegetable and fruit wastes, and animal-derived wastes. A comprehensive analysis of the properties and production methods of these packages is presented. Future aspects of agro-waste packaging systems and the inherent production problems are addressed. In the framework of wastewater treatment plants, sewage sludge can be directed to biochar production, which when coupled with an external iron source has the potential to be used as a carbon–iron composite material for treating various organic pollutants in advanced oxidation processes. In this research, "green" synthesized nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) supported on sewage sludge-based biochar (BC)–nZVI-BC was used in the Fenton process for the degradation of the recalcitrant organic molecule. In this way, the circular economy principles were supported within wastewater treatment with immediate loop closing; unlike previous papers, where only the water treatment was assessed, the authors proposed a new approach to wastewater treatment, combining solutions for both water and sludge. The following phases were implemented: synthesis and characterization of nano zero-valent iron supported on sewage sludge-based biochar (nZVI-BC); optimization of organic pollutant removal (Reactive Blue 4 as the model pollutant) by nZVI-BC in the Fenton process, using a Definitive Screening Design (DSD) model; reuse of the obtained Fenton sludge, as an additional catalytic material, under previously optimized conditions; and assessment of the exhausted Fenton sludge's ability to be used as a source of nutrients. nZVI-BC was used in the Fenton treatment for the degradation of Reactive Blue 4—a model substance containing a complex and stable anthraquinone structure. The DSD model proposes a high dye-removal efficiency of 95.02% under the following optimal conditions: [RB4] = 50 mg/L, [nZVI] = 200 mg/L, [H2O2] = 10 mM. pH correction was not performed (pH = 3.2). Afterwards, the remaining Fenton sludge, which was thermally treated (named FStreated), was applied as a heterogeneous catalyst under the same optimal conditions with a near-complete organic molecule degradation (99.56% ± 0.15). It could be clearly noticed that the cumulative amount of released nutrients significantly increased with the number of leaching experiments. The highest cumulative amounts of released K, Ca, Mg, Na, and P were therefore observed at the fifth leaching cycle (6.40, 1.66, 1.12, 0.62, 0.48 and 58.2 mg/g, respectively). According to the nutrient release and toxic metal content, FStreated proved to be viable for agricultural applications; these findings illustrated that the "green" synthesis of nZVI-BC not only provides innovative and efficient Fenton catalysts, but also constitutes a novel approach for the utilization of sewage sludge, supporting overall process sustainability. With the development trend and technological progress of lithium batteries, the battery market is booming, which means that the consumption demand for lithium batteries has increased significantly, and, therefore, a large number of discarded lithium batteries will be generated accordingly. Solvent extraction is a promising approach because it is simple. Solvent extraction is low in time consumption and is easy to industrialize. This paper is focused on the selective recovery of cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), and manganese (Mn) contained in leachate obtained by digesting a cathodic material from spent lithium batteries with hydrochloric acid. After leaching the cathodic material, Mn was selectively extracted from leachate by using solvent extraction with D2EHPA diluted in kerosene in an optimized condition. Afterward, Co was extracted from the Mn-depleted aqueous phase using Cyanex272 diluted in kerosene. Finally, the raffinate obtained via a stripping reaction with H2SO4 was used in the Ni extraction experiments. Cyanex272 extractant was employed to separate Ni and Li. The process can recover more than 93% of Mn, 90% of Co, and 90% of Ni. The crucial material recovered in the form of sulfuric acid solutions can be purified and returned to the manufacturer for use. This process proposes a complete recycling method by effectively recovering Mn, Co, and Ni with solvent extraction, to contribute to the supply of raw materials and to reduce tensions related to mineral resources for the production of lithium batteries. It is necessary to develop and deploy novel protein production to allow the establishment of a sustainable supply for both humans and animals, given the ongoing expansion of protein demand to meet the future needs of the increased world population and high living standards. In addition to plant seeds, green biomass from dedicated crops or green agricultural waste is also available as an alternative source to fulfill the protein and nutrient needs of humans and animals. The development of extraction and precipitation methods (such as microwave coagulation) for chloroplast and cytoplasmic proteins, which constitute the bulk of leaf protein, will allow the production of leaf protein concentrates (LPC) and protein isolates (LPI). Obtained LPC serves as a sustainable alternative source of animal-based protein besides being an important source of many vital phytochemicals, including vitamins and substances with nutritional and pharmacological effects. Along with it, the production of LPC, directly or indirectly, supports sustainability and circular economy concepts. However, the quantity and quality of LPC largely depend on several factors, including plant species, extraction and precipitation techniques, harvest time, and growing season. This paper provides an overview of the history of green biomass-derived protein from the early green fodder mill concept by Károly Ereky to the state-of-art of green-based protein utilization. It highlights potential approaches for enhancing LPC production, including dedicated plant species, associated extraction methods, selection of optimal technologies, and best combination approaches for improving leaf protein isolation. Information technologies possess the significant potential to improve the efficiency of resources and optimize energy usage, as well as make a significant contribution to the sustainable circular economy (CE). The concept of digital sufficiency provides a framework for understanding how information technology can be part of significant achievements in the circular economy, especially when embraced by business companies. Moreover, the possibility of the implementation of closed-loop resources has become possible with the development of digital manufacturing technologies. However, the research of establishing the CE in SMEs, especially in fossil-energy-abundant countries, such as the Russian Federation, is quite limited. Our paper fills in this gap by studying the adoption of CE practices as well as the investments for promoting CE in Russian SMEs through such factors as the existence of R&D, bank loans, and access to grants at the national and international level. It achieves this based on the data sample of 314 managers of Russian SMEs. Our results demonstrate that the investment or existence of R&D in SMEs and knowledge of CE as well the governmental funding and access to wider markets all together tend to have a significant and positive effect on implementing and investing into CE in SMEs, while the administrative barriers yield a small but negative effect. These results might be helpful for the relevant stakeholders in order to identify factors catalyzing attention from both the SMEs engaged in CE transitions, as well as help the decision makers wishing to foster the transformation of the SMEs to a circular economy. We can conclude that supporting SMEs (both financially and via increasing their public awareness) to make their own transitions towards CE has a societal effect that can speed up a greener transition and significantly contribute to increasing energy efficiency. This paper proposes a generic algorithm for industries with degrading and/or failing equipment with significant consequences. Based on the specifications and the real-time status of the production line, the algorithm provides decision support to machinery operators and manufacturers about the appropriate lifetime extension strategies to apply, the optimal time-frame for the implementation of each and the relevant machine components. The relevant recommendations of the algorithm are selected by comparing smartly chosen alternatives after simulation-based life cycle evaluation of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), considering the short-term and long-term impact of decisions on these economic and environmental KPIs. This algorithm requires various inputs, some of which may be calculated by third-party algorithms, so it may be viewed as the ultimate algorithm of an overall Decision Support Framework (DSF). Thus, it is called "DSF Core". The algorithm was applied successfully to three heterogeneous industrial pilots. The results indicate that compared to the lightest possible corrective strategy application policy, following the optimal preventive strategy application policy proposed by this algorithm can reduce the KPI penalties due to stops (i.e., failures and strategies) and production inefficiency by 30–40%. The human-centric philosophy is considered a crucial development direction for smart Product-Service Systems (smart PSS). Smart PSS has effectively advanced the circular economy by enhancing user experience, incorporating servitization and digital servitization, and extending product lifecycle, among other key aspects of sustainable development. However, there is currently a lack of a reasonable, accurate, and actionable framework and methodology to express the human element, namely user profiling, within this philosophy. To address this gap, this paper utilizes statistical methods such as factor analysis, cluster analysis, and regression analysis, building upon the concept of traditional user profiling. The aim is to integrate the three prominent approaches of goal-oriented, scenario-based, and data-driven user profiling, with the goal of complementing each other and designing a top-level user profiling framework for smart PSS. Furthermore, Industry 4.0 technologies and text mining techniques are employed to collect data on users' product and service usage. As these data contain real-time information about user needs, behaviors and goals at different time periods, they can be used to construct dynamic features of user profiling, and ultimately achieve the construction of dynamic user profiling for smart PSS. To validate the proposed user profiling framework and dynamic user features of smart PSS, this paper presents a case study focusing on the user group of maternal women. Born circular startups play a pivotal role in implementing high-level circularity to fight resource depletion and address climate change. In developing circular business model innovation, circular startups face the challenge of lacking legitimacy, which can be approached by certifications provided by concepts like Cradle-to-Cradle. As there is currently no supporting tool to develop such business models, this paper employs a design science research approach and proposes a Cradle-to-Cradle (C2C) Business Model Tool. The tool is developed based on a literature review, feedback from 42 users in six demonstration workshops and is finally tested with eight startups. It succeeds in aiding born circular startups in navigating the venturing process with a focus on high-level circularity. In this paper, C2C principles developed for the product level are theoretically linked to the business model level. The tool addresses elements such as partnerships, communication, and action-taking, thereby contributing to the literature on circular business model innovation and serving as a practical resource for born circular startups. The textile industry's resource use, waste, and emissions have led to severe scrutiny, worsened by fast fashion's rise, making clothing disposable. The circular economy (CE) offers a solution to address these issues but achieving circular fashion requires systemic and comprehensive stakeholder engagement across the value chain. Current research often overlooks wider stakeholders beyond internal company members, neglecting calls to incorporate a systems perspective in CE transitions. Moreover, the potential of stakeholder engagement for social learning, where stakeholders mutually share and acquire knowledge, remains largely untapped. To this end, this paper provides a systematic methodology of stakeholder engagement based on an empirical setting of transition towards CE in fashion textiles in London. It entails identifying contexts, aligning stakeholders' actions, negotiating interventions, and communicating insights effectively. Based on the learnings from an empirical stakeholder engagement process, findings suggest a lack of alignment in the understanding of the CE concept across actors, that is underpinned by a fragmented knowledge of the overall value chain, often leading to also fragmented siloed policy approaches. The purpose of this research is to show how taxation of intermediate items produced from virgin and recycled materials negatively impacts closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) results (labor, capital, returns, outputs, prices, profits, and dead-weight-loss). It offers remedies to alleviate tax inefficiencies. After formulating upstream and downstream production functions and recycling process, a Stackelberg game framework is analytically solved and data from steel industry and automobile stimulus program in the US are used to obtain numerical results. The results show that an optimum collection channel along with endogenous consumer return behavior can improve outcomes and reduce inefficiencies stemming from output taxation. The principal policy implication is that American, Chinese, Canadian, and German governments' tax incentive programs applied to items produced from recyclables are a sound strategy in the way of spurring their circular economies, improving environmental sustainability, and reducing economic loss. Household food waste is increasingly recognised as a global wicked problem for its greenhouse gas emissions, economic damage, and resource loss. Although targeted in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, countries can only respond according to their capacity. For Australia, national policy has put the pressure on states and territories to divert food waste away from landfill into a nascent circular economy. For councils, this increasingly means implementing a FOGO (Food Organics/Garden Organics) kerbside collection. Despite funding and infrastructure development, many are resisting. Framed by the tenets of policy diffusion, this paper presents the results of a nationwide exploratory survey aimed at identifying how and why council-based waste services staff resist, emulate or lead FOGO implementation. By assessing participants current kerbside systems and their attitudes towards household food waste management, the survey found costs, contamination, and capacity and were key concerns. However, responses to these varied considerably despite similarities of situation, often relating more to collaborative attitudes across waste services, council, and councillors. This paper recognises that a conducive environment for change is urgently needed for Australia to achieve organics diversion targets and shift household food towards a circular economy. Circular economy (CE) adoption is spreading worldwide, and it aims at decoupling the creation of value from resource consumption, leading to sustainable and responsible production and consumption as highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goal 12. The circular transition will ask for the transformation of the companies and the workforce, from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. The set of required skills will be influenced by the circular transition, while the degree of implementation of circular activities will depend on the availability of adequate skills. Nevertheless, the extant literature has not reached a consensus on which competences are required for a circular transition, and few studies have approached this topic at all. This paper presents a systematic literature review to identify and categorize the skills that can facilitate the adoption of circular practices in manufacturing companies. The identified skills were systematically organized within a structured framework extending Porter's Value Chain. Leveraging the literature review's findings, the paper proposes a series of ideal job profiles for circular manufacturing, and it outlines some preliminary education and training paths. In addition, knowledge about the factors affecting recycling of PET based nanomaterials is essential. The presented review is focused on understanding the PET commercialization aspects, keeping in mind market analysis, growth drivers, regulatory affairs, safety considerations, issues associated with scale-up, manufacturing challenges, economic viability, and cost-effectiveness. The textile and clothing industry is a significant global sector due to its economic and social contributions. However, it is one of the most polluting industries. There has been a significant uptake of research on circular economy implementation to reduce its environmental impacts. Nevertheless, there is a critical gap in reviewing how the research field is evolving and what the core focus and underlying assumptions of the existing research are. This paper utilises bibliometrics, content analysis, and problematisation to comprehensively examine the state of research. Analysing 132 primary documents dating from January 2014 to April 2023, this study reveals that sustainability-oriented innovation and transition challenges are the core focus of existing research. Technology-oriented circularity and its positive impact on sustainability is the in-house assumption that almost all studies are founded on. Besides unpacking the risk of such assumptions, this study provides tangible suggestions for future research on circular economy disruption, its rebound effect, and sustainability-oriented innovation. The transition to a circular economy can be undermined by rebound effects, which could mean secondary production does not fully displace virgin raw materials. So called 'circular economy rebound' is under examined in the academic literature and thus requires greater attention if it is to be successfully estimated and mitigated by decision and policy makers. Accordingly, this paper undertakes a systematic review of the methods that have been deployed to measure rebound effects of all types and identifies those quantitative tools that have yet to be utilised in the nascent area of circular economy rebound but which could have application in this context. In so doing, the paper also reflects on the data needs of different methods, as well as the magnitude of the different rebounds identified and potential mitigating strategies. By introducing local recovery networks, regional and local environmental authorities can play an important role in facilitating the circular economy. This paper studies a network design problem that encompasses the recovery of separately collected household waste streams, which are collected in containers at civic amenity sites. We formulate a generic tactical-operational container collection problem that will be solved using a mixed integer linear programming approach. This paper makes both a theoretical and practical contribution. We are the first to study a two container vehicle capacity restriction combined with collection site inventory capacities, time windows, shift break time, and shift duration constraints. The model is applied to a number of real-life test instances and scenarios. The results provide insight in how different combinations of scenarios exactly affect the fleet requirements. This not only includes the number of trucks or information under which circumstances an additional truck would (not) be needed, but also the 12-day collection schedule for the collection crews. The construction and building industry (CBI) is considered one of the major carbon emission contributors to the environment and faces various social and technical challenges in implementing decarbonized and circular economy (DCE) practices. Resource optimization can be achieved using the CBI product circularity and carbon offset mechanisms for greater business sustainability. In past studies, DCE practices have been loosely considered for improving the sustainability performance of emerging economies’ CBI. To fill this gap, this study uniquely focuses on CBI practices on DCE in consideration of socio-technical system (STS) availability because STS plays a vital role in adopting DCE practices. The proposed research framework is based on STS theory to measure the inter-influence of socio-technical challenges in achieving decarbonized and circular CBI. The STS-based framework consists of six dimensions namely: goals of circular construction (GCC), people barriers (PB), cultural barriers (CB), infrastructural barriers (IB), technological barriers (TB), and construction process and procedural barriers (CPB). The main STS dimensions are further divided into 26 sub-dimensions to assess interinfluencing mapping. The proposed framework is analyzed using integrated grey information uncertainty theory with decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), and interpretive structural modelling (ISM), i.e., grey-DISM. The grey-DISM method measures the driving power and dependence of the interdependencies of the decarbonized circularity barriers of the Indian CBI. Fifteen industry experts participated in the data survey, and their participation consistency was more than 95%. Barriers IB and CPB were found to be the major and minor challenges in implementing DCE in CBI. The findings of this research reported that lack of decarbonized and CE-based infrastructure hinders the adoption of DCE practices. This paper’s results also highlight the construction design dependency on infrastructure and machinery and low DCE practice perceptions for improving circularity in CBI. The entire decision model is divided into three levels of hierarchical mapping, which helps construction practitioners and policymakers develop strategic planning for improving DCE practices in CBI. This paper identifies the Circular Value Chain Blind Spot in consumer behavior research on Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). A scoping review was conducted to ascertain the current state of research regarding consumer behavior in handling WEEE concerning circular or transformational and linear behaviors. By evaluating 122 articles from databases including Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), and ProQuest the findings reveal a notable focus on three key strategies among the 9 R framework: recycle, repair, and reuse. Recycling emerges as the predominant area of research, while circular transformation strategies and linear concepts are also explored. Unexpectedly, concrete consumer action strategies are underrepresented, with a primary emphasis on companies and governments. As consumers are recognized as crucial actors within the circular economy (CE), this paper terms this contradictory state as the Circular Value Chain Blind Spot. Addressing future research, the paper concludes with a comprehensive research agenda encompassing six key areas: nudging, differentiation, systemic perspective, waste hierarchy, value chain strategies, and cultural factors. Waste generated from electrical and electronic equipment, known as e-waste, is increasing worldwide. Developed countries like those in Europe produce the most significant proportion of e-waste worldwide and, therefore, rely on exporting it to other countries for waste disposal. As Europe is transiting towards a Circular Economy and tackling environmental-related problems, there has been an increase in environmental policies and regulations in this area. This paper presents empirical evidence of how European Union regulations have affected the exports of e-waste. Yearly data from 2010 to 2018 for a panel of 18 European Union countries were analysed using the PCSE (Panel-Corrected Standard Error) estimator. In order to measure environmental regulation, Environmental Tax Revenues from the manufacture of computers, electronic, and optical products were selected. The findings of this paper suggest that taxation is ineffective in reducing e-waste exports, with a tax on manufacturers actually increasing them. Also, high dependence and sub-standard e-waste collection systems increase e-waste exportation. Given that countries often depend on foreign raw materials, a sensible approach would be to invest in collection points for e-waste to take economic advantage of this waste's vital elements. With the continuous development of society and the continuous improvement of people's living standards, leisure agricultural tourism based on agricultural production has gradually become popular, which takes agricultural landscape, agricultural experience and agricultural product shopping as content, and leisure agricultural tourist attractions have emerged. At present, some ecological agriculture projects are reconstruction or transformation projects, which are the recreational transformation of the original base for traditional agricultural projects in order to survive and seek market stimulation. However, due to the unscientific planning of the basic system, the low level of operation and management, and the lack of a scientific theoretical system for demonstration during the transformation process, the planning and transformation of the ecological agriculture project have not been promoted, and the project industry development has not been improved. In order to promote the development of agro-ecological economy and improve the reliability of the development model of agricultural circular economy, this paper explores the general framework of the coordinated development of the agricultural logistics ecosystem from the perspective of the construction of the agricultural logistics ecosystem, the composition of the ecosystem, the synergy stage, and the synergy goal. Moreover, this paper combines big data and Internet of Things technology to analyze its own path of the cooperative development mechanism of the agricultural logistics ecosystem, and uses typical cases to show the internal relationships between the main bodies of the agricultural logistics ecosystem. In addition, this paper attempts to explain the core essence of the agricultural logistics ecosystem and the internal relations of the subjects through the practice of enterprises. After constructing the system framework, this paper combines the intelligent algorithm to construct the intelligent model structure, and analyzes the system function realisation process based on the actual situation. Finally, this paper evaluates the performance of the algorithm model constructed in this paper through experimental research. Traditional rural cultural heritage is not only the crystallisation of China's long agricultural history but also can guide the development of modern agriculture to some extent. In order to improve the reliability and scientificity of the path of agriculture sustainable development, guided by the concept of circular economy, this paper combines data mining technology to construct a path analysis system of agricultural sustainable development and establishes a one-dimensional discrete dynamic model of the interaction between the stock of renewable resources and the output. Moreover, this paper discusses the impact of resource-based industries' output on the sustainable use of resources and establishes a two-dimensional discrete dynamic control model for resource stock and resource development speed. In addition, this paper mainly studies the relationship between resource stock and output when the speed of resource development is managed and controlled, and builds a system structure model based on the actual needs of agricultural development. Finally, this paper designs an experiment to analyse the performance of the system model constructed in this paper. The research results show that the system constructed in this paper has a certain guiding effect on the sustainable development of agriculture, and it can be applied to practice. Glass can be considered a locus of meaning, a material which has been the repository of traditional knowledge and technological expertise for at least three millennia. The history of glass speaks of know-how, technological transitions, and contaminations of recipes for its manufacture, which have changed across the world over the centuries. As the amount of recovered glass from archaeological contexts is much lower compared to ceramic and metal finds, research has often considered glass as a rare material. Furthermore, glass production, in ancient times as in the present day, requires the use of selected raw materials and noticeable amounts of fuel, making reuse and recycling practices necessary to foster sustainability, from both an economical and an environmental perspective. Latin authors, such as Juvenal and Martial, reported buyers of broken glass in Imperial Rome, presumably destined for recycling. Archaeometry has also provided data that allow, today, to clarify different aspects related to production cycles, uses and reuses of a material that, starting from the Roman age, became as common as modern plastics. From beakers and goblets reused with different purposes to mosaic tesserae detached for making new mosaics or to be refused and employed as "pigments" for colouring glass, this paper aims to provide an overview of reuse and recycling practices of ancient glass through a discussion of selected case studies from Roman to Middle Ages, showing how the cycle of this material can be framed as an actual example of sustainable circular economy in the past. Adsorption is one of the most important techniques for the remediation of textile industry wastewaters containing high concentrations of toxic dyes. Calcium phosphates (CaPs) have been advocated among the most promising adsorbent phases in virtue of their high dye adsorption potential, low production cost, and possible recovery from circular economy sources. In this paper, we investigated the application of synthetic CaPs (CaP–S) and two CaPs extracted from food by-products, namely from bone meal (CaP-BM) and fish bones (CaP-FM) for the removal of a model dye, copper phthalocyanine tri-sulfonic acid, also known as acid blue 185 (AB-185). All the materials were characterized from the physical-chemical point of view and used for the study of adsorption kinetic and isothermal adsorption of AB-185 at neutral, acidic and basic pH values. The best adsorption capacity was obtained for CaP–S, followed by CaP-BM and CaP-FM. Nonetheless, results showed that all the materials can be employed for removing AB-185 from wastewaters of textile industry, and we correlated dye removal efficiency to the adsorbent phase specific surface area (SSA) and ζ-potential, as well as to dye concentration and pH of wastewaters. Finally, as the process used to produce the studied CaPs affects their main final physical-chemical parameters and performance in terms of dyes removal, it is important to consider the variables of CaPs production process (e.g., temperature, time of treatment, grinding etc.), especially when CaPs are recovered from circular economy sources by thermal treatments of food-byproducts. As European governments adopt new circular built environment policies to cope with the socio-ecological crisis, the need for evaluating such policies gains in urgency. Ex post evaluation is, however, difficult as these policies have not been in place long enough to have had significant effects. Nonetheless, ex ante policy evaluation may be possible by assessing policy coherence or the alignment and synergies of policy goals, instruments and implementation practices. This paper proposes a framework to analyse circular built environment policies. This framework is based on a combination of two existing analytical frameworks: circular city development and policy coherence analysis. The framework is tested for the case of a circular built environment in campus development at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, which is regarded as an urban development proxy. Policy documents and semi-structured interviews were analysed and coded. Results confirm previous findings about a prevailing focus on looping actions and indicates limited policy instrumentalisation across governance levels. Identified multilevel (in)coherence in circular city policy is pointed out as consequence of siloed-led and supply chain-based thinking and underdeveloped circular policy frameworks. Background: The introduction of elements of the circular economy requires major structural changes in economies, the involvement of a wide range of actors, including primarily businesses. However, it is worth noting the importance of other organizations, including the so-called third sector. Research objectives: The purpose of this article is to introduce the issue of cooperation of business and the third sector entities for the development of the circular economy. Research design and methods: For the purpose of the research paper, the following research method was used: a classic literature review and case study. Results: Collaboration between business and third sector providers has enormous potential for development and innovation. Conclusions: In Polish conditions the benefits and possibilities of cooperation between business and the third sector are not properly appreciated, and they are connected with a huge potential for the entities themselves and the possibilities of implementing the circular economy. This research analyses the leading strategies and practices for transforming Brazil's Circular Economy of packaging. In-depth semi-structured interviews (n=53) were conducted with stakeholders active in the Brazilian packaging sector and triangulated with document analysis. The main strategies identified were environmental education programs, MSW diversion practices, environmental crimes (regeneration) inspection, efficient use of products, and waste reduction (optimisation). As for sharing, the inequality resulting from regional differences in logistics infrastructure was highlighted. The tanning industry generates significant amounts of solid waste and post-production wastewater, which should be managed in accordance with the principles of the circular economy. Waste is generated at various technological stages of production. This comprises mainly solid waste and leachate. A comprehensive solution to the problem of disposal of this waste is very important from economic and environmental points of view. This work presents research for a technological production line designed for the comprehensive processing of post-production residues. In the present paper, the authors present an analysis related to the possibility of processing leather flesh side (mizdra) as a substrate for methane fermentation. The study showed an increased biogas production from solid waste after enzymatic hydrolysis up to 248 Nm3/Mg. Preliminary research on the system designed for pre-treatment of sewage from the technological line is also presented. The study showed a COD reduction of more than 30%. Enhancing carbon emission mitigation and carbon utilization have become necessary for the world to respond to climate change caused by the increase of greenhouse gas concentrations. As a result, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies have attracted considerable attention worldwide, especially in China, which plans to achieve a carbon peak before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060. This paper proposed six priorities for China, the current world's largest carbon emitter, to achieve its dual carbon strategy in the green energy transition process. We analyzed and summarized the challenges and potentialities of conventional carbon utilization (CU), carbon capture utilization (CCU), and CCUS. Based on the current development trend, carbon dioxide capture, circular utilization, and storage (CCCUS) technology that integrates carbon circular utilization and partial sequestration, with large-scale underground energy storage were proposed, namely biomethanation. Technically and economically, biomethanation was believed to have an essential contribution to China's renewable energy utilization and storage, as well as the carbon circular economy. The preliminary investigation reveals significant potential, with a corresponding carbon storage capacity of 5.94 × 108 t~7.98 × 108 t and energy storage of 3.29 × 1012 kWh~4.42 × 1012 kWh. Therefore, we believe that in addition to vigorously developing classical CCUS technology, technical research and pilot projects of CCCUS technology that combined large-scale underground energy storage also need to be carried out to complete the technical reserve and the dual-carbon target. The use of energy from waste can be a key means of reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and thus reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Waste energy can be a worthy alternative to conventional energy sources in construction. This paper presents data on energy consumption for the preparation of domestic hot water in residential buildings. A review of the literature sources and inventions in the area of waste energy recovery from grey water was carried out. It also presents the results of research on prototypes of devices used to receive energy deposited in wastewater, published in recent years. The benefits of using drain water heat recovery systems for preheating utility water in residential buildings are presented. An analysis of technical solutions for grey water energy collection units was made, revealing their advantages and disadvantages. Great importance was attached to the review of patent sources as well as devices available on the market. According to the authors, the results of the technical review may be useful for contractors and designers of heat recovery equipment and installations, researchers and potential users of these technologies. Recent years have brought significant evolution and changes in wastewater treatment systems. New solutions are sought to improve treatment efficiency, reduce investment/operational costs, and comply with the principles of circular economy and zero waste. Microbial granules can serve as an alternative to conventional technologies. Indeed, there has been fast-growing interest in methods harnessing aerobic (AGS) and anaerobic (AnGS) granular sludge as well as microbial-bacterial granules (MBGS), as evidenced by the number of studies on the subject and commercial installations developed. The present paper identifies the strengths and weaknesses of wastewater treatment systems based on granular sludge (GS) and their potential for energy production, with a particular focus on establishing the R&D activities required for further advance of these technologies. In particular, the impact of granules on bioenergy conversion, including bio-oil recovery efficiency and biomethane/biohydrogen yields, and bioelectrochemical systems must be assessed and optimized. The paper presents the results of the research on the possibility of using waste after the printing process as a filler for polymeric materials. Remains of the label backing were used, consisting mainly of cellulose with glue and polymer label residue. The properly prepared filler (washed, dried, pressed and cut) was added to the polypropylene in a volume ratio of 2:1; 1:1; 1:2; and 1:3 which corresponded to approximately 10, 5, 2.5 and 2 wt % filler. The selected processing properties (mass flow rate), mechanical properties (tensile strength, impact strength, dynamic mechanical analysis) and thermal properties (thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry) were determined. The use of even the largest amount of filler did not cause disqualifying changes in the determined properties. The characteristics of the obtained materials allow them to be used in various applications while reducing costs due to the high content of cheap filler. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a circular economy approach with the adsorption and desorption of heavy metal (HM) ions—i.e., lead (Pb2+), chromium (CrT), and mercury (Hg2+)—from aqueous solutions was studied. Specific and selective binding of HM ions was performed on stabilized and amino-functionalized iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3@NH2 NPs) from an aqueous solution at pH 4 and 7. For this purpose, γ-Fe2O3@NH2 NPs were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), specific surface area (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), EDXS, and zeta potential measurements (ζ). The effects of different adsorbent amounts (mads = 20/45/90 mg) and the type of anions (NO3−, Cl−, SO42−) on adsorption efficiency were also tested. The desorption was performed with 0.1 M HNO3. The results showed improvement of adsorption efficiency for CrT, Pb2+, and Hg2+ ions at pH 7 by 45 mg of g-Fe2O3@NH2 NPs, and the sequence was as follows: CrT > Hg2+ > Pb2+, with adsorption capacities of 90.4 mg/g, 85.6 mg/g, and 83.6 mg/g, respectively. The desorption results showed the possibility for the reuse of γ-Fe2O3@NH2 NPs with HNO3, as the desorption efficiency was 100% for Hg2+ ions, 96.7% for CrT, and 91.3% for Pb2+. A circular economy recycles previously manufactured products at the end of their lifecycle with minimal or zero waste generation and the use of additional new resources. The priorities of the recycling system include waste minimisation, reuse, remanufacturing and improvement. Innovative methods can therefore be integrated into factories to ensure waste is used to feed energy systems, rather than them exacerbating deforestation. As part of the research presented in this paper, we examined the impact of sustainability factors within Hungarian food companies, Industry 4.0 tools, as well as other factors that support or hinder business performance. The article aims to present the tools used for evaluating the efficacy and competitiveness of the business models of Hungarian food companies within the context of Industry 4.0. The questionnaire survey was conducted between 2019 and 2020, during which data were collected from 276 food companies. The data were subsequently analysed using a broad range of statistical methods, including Cronbach’s alpha index, factor analysis, K-mean clustering, oneway analysis of variance, cross-tabulation analysis, significance-effect matrix, Fornell-Larcker criterion, composition reliability index, and for the PLS path analysis, mean explained variance index, heterotrait-monotrait ratio, and predictive relevance. Researching sustainability factors is a means by which to strike a balance between economic, social and ecological factors so that a company can be efficient, effective and functional at the same time. The paper presents the results of research on a composite mixture intended for use in road construction. The purpose of developing the mixture is to be able to use large amounts of industrial waste to produce building material. The waste used are coal slate from the mining industry, shredded rubber waste from used passenger car tires and fly ash from power plants. The mixture (SRFC) consists of unburnt coal-mining slate (S), shredded rubber waste (R), fly ash (F) and cement(C). A test under cyclic loading conditions was carried out on samples prepared from the SRFC mixture, in which the global deformations and local strains caused on the samples were measured. A measurement system using digital image correlation was used for the research. On the basis of the conducted research, it was found that the content of shredded rubber waste significantly influences the deformability of the tested mixtures and allows for the extension of the scope of elastic deformation in which the tested samples work. The lack of standard practices and platforms for assessing refurbishment strategies towards Circular Economy (CE) and their impact in global warming constitutes a challenge for the decarbonization of existing building stock. Incorporating data and feedback from designers and practitioners since early design stages is important to feed a multi-criteria dynamic process with multiple dimensions, which must be assessed under a life cycle perspective. To tackle this issue, this paper introduces a new methodology to support the implementation of tailored refurbishment strategies for increased recovery, reuse and recycling of construction materials. The final objective is to build a methodological framework for sustainable refurbishment design in a BIM environment, which aims to facilitate standardized practices in the construction sector, regarding CE, with a positive impact in the mitigation of global warming and the decarbonization of the building stock. To test the development of this methodology, a case study building in Lisbon, corresponding to a 1919-1945 archetype is analysed, making use of its BIM model, where BIM standardization criteria and circularity indicators are discussed, in order to be implemented as a Plugin for Circularity. The construction and transport sectors both have a substantial impact on the environment. The construction, maintaining and renovating of roads involves both these sectors and the environmental impact of this work can be reduced. The basic principle of a circular economy is to close material loops and so retain the highest utility, quality and value of products, components and materials as possible. An important question in this respect is how to qualify and quantify material flows. Material and project passports seem to be part of the solution to improve insights and sharing information on quantities and qualities of materials used in construction projects. This paper has used a literature study on material passports and has taken into account current project management software used by a municipality, in order to share a framework for organising and collecting road construction data. Furthermore, various scanning equipment and procedures were employed onsite in an experiment in collecting actual road data. This resulted in a large amount of different data files that have been interpreted and incorporated into the existing database structure of the municipality. The insights gained may help other researchers, principals and contractors in the road construction industry in collecting and storing reliable data necessary to renovate roads circularly. The application of the Circular Economy model, supported by the European Commission, can be the driver of an industrial and architectural conversion and, also, an opportunity to innovate production processes through the elimination of the concept of waste. Furthermore, the attention of public and private actors as well as policies and rules are now focused on accelerating the ongoing transition from linear to circular economy. In line with this multi-sectoral shift, the paper intends to illustrate the results of the research activities carried out at the Politecnico di Torino in cooperation with Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) of the Piedmont region (Italy). In particular, the article illustrates a double experience developed with two different paths: the CIBUS' research project (Circular economy in the Building Sector from agri-food waste) and the innovative master's degree course Design and development the transition to the circular economy. The implementation of new energy policies and standards for NZEB is expected to lead to a significant reduction of GHG emissions from building use in Europe in the next decades. On the other side, the growing pressure on insulation materials risks to significantly contribute to the exhaustion of the remaining carbon budget due to the high carbon intensity of conventional insulation for material processing. Consequently, storing carbon in construction products and promoting circular economies able to generate up-cycling processes from industrial or post-consumption waste are the key strategies to promote an effective transition toward a carbon-neutral society. Fashion & clothing is one of the manufacturing sectors which mostly contributes to waste generation and fossil GHG emission. This paper presents the main outcomes achieved from RECYdress project, which focuses on the valorisation of wasted textile collected by municipal districts to develop novel thermal insulations for building applications. Three alternative conceptual manufacturing processes were defined at lab scale based on different treatment of textile fibres, with produced specimens tested for thermal characterization. Finally, the LCA results of an ETICS application for façade renovation were compared considering as functional unit 1m2 of façade with similar thermal resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this research paper is to explore the antecedents and consequences of circular entrepreneurship in emerging markets. The consequences of circular entrepreneurship will be explored through the lens of three dimensions of sustainability: social, economic, and environmental. This study used a multi-case approach, which is frequently applied in circular business literature. The study used convenient and purposeful sampling techniques to identify circular entrepreneurs starting a business by recognizing opportunities in CE. We interviewed the 15 entrepreneurs (all participants engage in plastic circular entrepreneurship) with more than 8 years of experience. We employed a semi-structured interview method because respondents explored important information during the interview. Atlas.ti, a prominent qualitative software package, was used for analysis. This study portrays the antecedents and consequences of circular entrepreneurship identified when circular entrepreneurs take the initiative to serve low-income customers. This study points out that circular entrepreneurs can be motivated both intrinsically and extrinsically. The consequences of circular entrepreneurship show how such enterprises impact on society, sustainability, and the economy. The study points out that circular entrepreneurship can have both positive and negative impacts on the environment. By investigating the determinants and consequences of circular entrepreneurship in emerging markets, the authors make a significant contribution to the field of circular economy and entrepreneurship. We have limited logistics and resources, thus we did not collect data from stakeholders, who might provide a richer picture and insights into how circular products affect their lifestyle. Policymakers can get a better understanding of such enterprises from the findings of this study. They should reassess policies regarding circular entrepreneurship and suggest ways to promote open innovation within circular entrepreneurship. Circular enterprises serve low-income customers by offering an affordable product with attractive features. The government should develop an open innovation action-packed forum to find, design, and create prototypes, as well as introduce more comprehensive sustainable solutions for wastable plastic products. Mycotoxins' contamination of food products is a well-known issue that is gaining interest nowadays due to increasing contaminations that are also related to climate change. In this context, and considering the principles of Circular Economy, finding robust and reliable strategies for the decontamination and valorisation of mycotoxin-contaminated products becomes mandatory. Anaerobic digestion (AD) and composting appear as promising biological treatments to degrade mycotoxins and allow for recovering energy (i.e., biogas production) and materials (i.e., nutrients from digestate and/or compost). The aim of the present paper was to carry out an organic revision of the state of the art of energy and materials recovery from mycotoxin-contaminated food products through biological treatments, highlighting results and research gaps. Both processes considered were not generally affected by the contamination of the feedstocks, proving that these compounds do not affect process stability. Mycotoxins were highly removed due to the concurrence of microbiological and physical agents in AD and composting. From the literature review, emerged the points that still need to be addressed before considering large scale application of these processes, which are (i) to deepen the knowledge of biochemical transformations of mycotoxins during the processes, (ii) to assess the fate of mycotoxins' residues and metabolites in soil once digestate/compost are applied, (iii) to evaluate and optimize the integration of AD and composting in order to increase the environmental and economical sustainability of the processes, and (iv) to update legislation and regulations to allow the agricultural reuse of organic fertilizers obtained from contaminated feedstocks. Humans are exposed to agricultural soils through inhalation, dermal contact, or the consumption of food. Human health may be at risk when soils are contaminated; while some soil contaminants such as heavy metals (HMs) have been extensively studied, others such as micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) or antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) pose novel threats. This paper investigates the linkages between soil contamination and human health risk by reviewing the state of knowledge on HMs, MNPs, and ARB in agricultural soils. A keyword-based search in Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar was conducted, complemented with a backward snowball search. We analysed main sources of contamination for agricultural soils, risks to human health differentiated by uptake pathway (ingestion, inhalation, dermal), and interactions of contaminants with microorganism, soil fauna, and plants. Results show that the emergence and spread of ARB and antibiotic resistant genes from agricultural soils and their contribution to antibiotic resistances of human pathogens is recognized as a significant threat. Likewise, a growing body of evidence indicates that MNPs are able to enter the food chain and to have potentially harmful effects on human health. For HM, knowledge of the effects on human health is well established. Multiple agricultural practices increase HM concentrations in soils, which may lead to adverse health effects from the ingestion of contaminated products or inhalation of contaminated soil particles. Severe knowledge gaps exist about the pathways of the contaminants, their behaviour in soil, and human uptake. Little is known about long-term exposure and impacts of MNPs, antibiotics and ARB on human health or about the possible combined effects of MNPs, ARB, and HMs. Missing monitoring systems inhibit a comprehensive assessment of human health risks. Our research demonstrates the need for human health risk assessment in the context of agricultural soils, in particular to be able to assess risks related to measures reinforcing the concept of the circular economy.
