In this study, the effect of air plasma on the surface properties of printed and coated cardboard was investigated. The material was activated by low-pressure cold plasma for 1, 10, 20, and 30 s. Wettability changes on the surface were examined by contact angle measurements using the sessile droplet technique. The differences in the surface free energy were calculated using the Lifshitz–van der Waals/acid–base and Contact Angle Hysteresis approaches. Optical profilometry was used for the surface roughness evaluation and an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis was performed to find changes in surface chemistry. Adhesive strength tests were carried out to estimate the adhesion changes after the material’s modification. It was found that the water and formamide contact angles increased after the plasma treatment while the diiodomethane contact angle did not change. As a result of the modification, the surface free energy also increased significantly and the surface roughness increased. The pull-off tests confirmed the improvement in the material’s surface properties. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the optimal effect can be obtained after just 10 s of the plasma process.

Cancer remains one of the global leading causes of death and various vaccines have been developed over the years against it, including cell-based, nucleic acid-based, and viral-based cancer vaccines. Although many vaccines have been effective in in vivo and clinical studies and some have been FDA-approved, there are major limitations to overcome: (1) developing one universal vaccine for a specific cancer is difficult, as tumors with different antigens are different for different individuals, (2) the tumor antigens may be similar to the body's own antigens, and (3) there is the possibility of cancer recurrence. Therefore, developing personalized cancer vaccines with the ability to distinguish between the tumor and the body's antigens is indispensable. This paper provides a comprehensive review of different types of cancer vaccines and highlights important factors necessary for developing efficient cancer vaccines. Moreover, the application of other technologies in cancer therapy is discussed. Finally, several insights and conclusions are presented, such as the possibility of using cold plasma and cancer stem cells in developing future cancer vaccines, to tackle the major limitations in the cancer vaccine developmental process. Field Line Resonances (FLRs) are a critical component in Earth's magnetospheric dynamics, associated with the transfer of energy between Ultra Low Frequency waves and local plasma populations. In this study we investigate how the polarisation of FLRs are impacted by cold plasma density distributions during geomagnetic storms. We present an analysis of Van Allen Probe A observations, where the spacecraft traversed a storm time plasmaspheric plume. We show that the polarisation of the FLR is significantly altered at the sharp azimuthal density gradient of the plume boundary, where the polarisation is intermediate with significant poloidal and toroidal components. These signatures are consistent with magnetohydrodynamic modeling results, providing the first observational evidence of a 3D FLR associated with a plume in Earth's magnetosphere. These results demonstrate the importance of cold plasma in controlling wave dynamics in the magnetosphere, and have important implications for wave‐particle interactions at a range of energies. Plain Language Summary: Earth's space environment is home to electrons and ions across a wide range of energies, trapped in the region by our global geomagnetic field. Energy can be transferred to and from the trapped particles through oscillations in the magnetic field, and these processes are responsible for the extreme energization of trapped electrons to hazardous levels for local spacecraft. In this paper we explore a type of magnetic field oscillation termed Field Line Resonances (FLRs): standing waves on a field line analogous to the oscillatory motion of guitar strings. We use spacecraft observations to show that the direction of the field line oscillations changes significantly depending on the density of the background plasma. The results confirm previous modeling work, and are the first observational evidence of 3D FLRs at a plume. As an innovative technology in biological applications, cold plasma is widely used in oral treatment, tissue regeneration, wound healing, and cancer therapy, etc., because of the adjustable composition and temperature which allow the plasma to react with bio-objects safely. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by cold plasma regulate cell activity in an intensity- and time-dependent manner. A low level of ROS produced by cold plasma treatment within the appropriate intensities and times promotes proliferation of skin-related cells and increases angiogenesis, which aid in the acceleration of the wound healing process, while a high level of ROS produced by cold plasma treatment performed at a high intensity or over a long period of time inhibits the proliferation of endothelial cells, keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and cancer cells. Moreover, cold plasma can regulate stem cell proliferation by changing niche interface and producing nitric oxide directly. However, the molecular mechanism of cold plasma regulating cell activity and its potential application in the field of animal husbandry remain unclear in the literature. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma has several applications in different fields. One of these fundamental applications is medical usages, where various methods are employed to improve the plasma treatment process. The combination of different gases is one of the important strategies to improve the performance of plasma in treatment. In this paper, the optimized plasma parameters for one-dimensional radiofrequency discharge produced at low pressures in a helium gas combination is studied. In this research, the optimal combination of H2O and He is identified to attain the highest amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Considered mixture are 5, 10, 15 and 20 precent of H2O for one dimensional helium gas discharge. The results show that the parameters of the output plasma are highly dependent on the composition of the input gases. It is found that the greatest concentrations of H+, H+, Hes (excited helium), and OH densities are observed when the H2O percentage was at 10%. Moreover, the density distributions of various species and the temperatures of electrons are numerically calculated during the electrical discharge process. These findings provide useful knowledge on how to optimize plasma parameters for biomedical applications, which may lead to improved treatment results in several therapeutic areas. Quality losses in fresh produce throughout the postharvest phase are often due to the inappropriate use of preservation technologies. In the last few decades, besides the traditional approaches, advanced postharvest physical and chemical treatments (active packaging, dipping, vacuum impregnation, conventional heating, pulsed electric field, high hydrostatic pressure, and cold plasma) and biocontrol techniques have been implemented to preserve the nutritional value and safety of fresh produce. The application of these methodologies after harvesting is useful when addressing quality loss due to the long duration when transporting products to distant markets. Among the emerging technologies and contactless and non-destructive techniques for quality monitoring (image analysis, electronic noses, and near-infrared spectroscopy) present numerous advantages over the traditional, destructive methods. The present review paper has grouped original studies within the topic of advanced postharvest technologies, to preserve quality and reduce losses and waste in fresh produce. Moreover, the effectiveness and advantages of some contactless and non-destructive methodologies for monitoring the quality of fruit and vegetables will also be discussed and compared to the traditional methods. Meat quality is damaged by traditional technologies. Researchers devised a revolutionary technique called plasma technology to meet the requirement for an effective cold processing method. Cold plasma (CP) used for meats and its products decontamination and storability extension has shown to be highly successful. The influence of CP on meat quality is important to its acceptability as an alternative meat processing technology. CP treatments have had effects on the color, pH, lipid oxidation, and microbial quality of different meat products. CP treatment offers crucial benefits over traditional processing methods because of its design adaptability, non-thermal behavior, relatively inexpensive, and environmental friendliness. CP processing is currently in its infancy and requires further investigation in meat and meat products to achieve its best extent. Even though food by-products have many negative financial and environmental impacts, they contain a considerable quantity of precious bioactive compounds such as polyphenols. The recovery of these compounds from food wastes could diminish their adverse effects in different aspects. For doing this, various nonthermal and conventional methods are used. Since conventional extraction methods may cause plenty of problems, due to their heat production and extreme need for energy and solvent, many novel technologies such as microwave, ultrasound, cold plasma, pulsed electric field, pressurized liquid, and ohmic heating technology have been regarded as alternatives assisting the extraction process. This paper highlights the competence of mild technologies in the recovery of polyphenols from food by-products, the effect of these technologies on polyphenol oxidase, and the application of the recovered polyphenols in the food industry. The gliding arc cold plasma treatment of wheat seeds is an alternative to chemical seed dressing, but this treatment is not very effective. This study was focused on testing the addition of salt, water and nitrogenous compounds during plasma treatment to increase the efficiency of the plasma seed treatment. The additives were not supplied in the gaseous state, as usual, but in an aqueous solution by spraying under a plasma nozzle during the treatment. The phytosanitary effect of the plasma treatment was evaluated based on the germination of Tilletia caries spores from artificially infected seeds on water agar. The viability of the seeds, growth and yield characteristics of the plasma-treated seeds were evaluated in the laboratory, greenhouse and even in field experiments with the primary goal of reducing spore vitality. The germination of T. caries spores was mostly limited to the variant with the addition of water during plasma treatment, where spore germination reached only 32.7% of the control variant while maintaining sufficient growth properties. The experiment demonstrated the suitability of using the addition of various substances during plasma treatment in the form of aqueous solutions and increasing the effectiveness of this treatment. This paper presents an experimentally observed transition from the validity of the radial theories to the validity of the orbital theories that model the ion current collected by a cylindrical Langmuir probe immersed in low-pressure, low-temperature helium plasma when it is negatively biased with respect to the plasma potential, as a function of the positive ion-neutral collision mean free path to the Debye length ratio Λ = λ + / λ D . The study has been also conducted on argon and neon plasmas, which allows a comparison based on the mass of the ions, although no transition has been observed for these gases. As the radial or orbital behavior of the ions is essential to establish the validity of the different sheath theories, a theoretical analysis of such a transition not only as a function of the parameters Λ and β = T + / T e , T + and T e being the positive ion and electron temperature, respectively, but also as a function of the ion mass is provided. This study allows us to recognize the importance of the mass of the ion as the parameter that explains the transition in helium plasmas. Motivated by these theoretical arguments, a novel set of measurements has been performed to study the relationship between the Λ and β parameters in the transition that demonstrate that the effect of the ion mean free path cannot be completely ignored and also that its influence on the ion current collected by the probe is less important than the effect of the ion temperature. Can low-temperature plasma technology play a role in medicine? This is a question that many investigators today are trying hard to give a positive answer to. It did not quite start out this way. Almost two decades ago, few "curious" electrical engineers and physicists with the help of few "brave" biologists! microbiologists asked themselves more basic questions: What happens to biological cells if they were exposed to low-temperature plasma? Will they die? Will they survive? If they survive, will they come out the same or somehow "injured"? If injured, will they be able to repair the damage and recover? What kind of damage? Which plasma agent causes the damage? etc. As will be shown in this paper, some of these fundamental questions have been partially or fully answered, but until today, a complete picture has yet to emerge. This is good and not so good. It is good because if we already knew all the answers, we would not be looking forward to a more exciting research. It is not so good because after all these years, we are still quite a ways from an implementable medical application. In this review paper, the present state of knowledge regarding the effects of cold plasma on bacteria cells (prokaryotes) and on eukaryotic cells (such as mammalian cells) will be presented. Abstract: The treatment of additive-free hand sheet paper samples with cold plasma was carried out and showed that cellulose can be chemically linked with reactive natural products, namely myrcene (My) and limonene (LM). Contact-angle measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to ascertain the occurrence of the grafting. Indeed, the contact-angle value of a drop of water deposited at the surface of paper increased from 30° for unmodified substrate to about 105 and 107°, for LM- and My-treated samples, respectively. In fact, LM- and My-treated surfaces were rendered totally apolar. Indeed, the polar contribution to the surface energy decreased from about 23 mJ/m2 for pristine samples to practically zero for treated ones. The treated surfaces displayed water-barrier properties; the penetration of the liquid was reduced significantly after LM and My treatments. The XPS spectra showed that the modification with LM and My gave rise to very significant change in the O/C ratio, as well as in the intensity of the C1 peak assigned to aliphatic carbon sequences. In this paper, core–shell structured (ZnSe) is prepared bio synthesis by cold plasma technique under atmospheric pressure with an exposure time of 3 min and a gas flow rate of 3 L/min. Films' structural characteristics and morphological characterization were investigated by X-ray diffractometer, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). In addition, parameters like crystal size were calculated. Results showed XRD patterns exhibit structure of polycrystalline of preferential orientation (111) direction. SEM technique shows that the nanoparticles presented are spherical. AFM image verified film-formed spherical particles distribute uniformly. The antibacterial diffusion method property of these nanoparticles was performed against Gram-negative bacteria of Escherichia coli and Gram-positive bacteria of Staphylococcus aureus, showing good control of said bacteria. The maximum level of inhibition was found in coli form bacteria with an average inhibition zone diameter with S. aureus, implying an increasing trend with increasing/decreasing loading volume of NC volume. Therefore, these nanomaterials, which can be prepared in a simple and cost-effective way, may be suitable for new types of germicidal materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whistler waves propagating nearly parallel to the ambient magnetic field experience a nonlinear instability due to transverse currents when the background plasma has a population of sufficiently low energy electrons. Intriguingly, this nonlinear process may generate oblique electrostatic waves, including whistlers near the resonance cone with properties resembling oblique chorus waves in the Earth's magnetosphere. Focusing on the generation of oblique whistlers, earlier analysis of the instability is extended here to the case where low-energy background plasma consists of both a "cold" population with energy of a few eV and a "warm" electron component with energy of the order of 100 eV. This is motivated by spacecraft observations in the Earth's magnetosphere where oblique chorus waves were shown to interact resonantly with the warm electrons. The main new results are: 1) the instability producing oblique electrostatic waves is sensitive to the shape of the electron distribution at low energies. In the whistler range of frequencies, two distinct peaks in the growth rate are typically present for the model considered: a peak associated with the warm electron population at relatively low wavenumbers and a peak associated with the cold electron population at relatively high wavenumbers; 2) overall, the instability producing oblique whistler waves near the resonance cone persists (with a reduced growth rate) even in the cases where the temperature of the cold population is relatively high, including cases where cold population is absent and only the warm population is included; 3) particle-in-cell simulations show that the instability leads to heating of the background plasma and formation of characteristic plateau and beam features in the parallel electron distribution function in the range of energies resonant with the instability. The plateau/beam features have been previously detected in spacecraft observations of oblique chorus waves. However, they have been attributed to external sources and have been proposed to be the mechanism generating oblique chorus. In the present scenario, the causality link is reversed and the instability generating oblique whistler waves is shown to be a possible mechanism for formation of the plateau and beam features. A promising pollution control technology is cold plasma driven chemical processing. The plasma is a pulsed electric gas discharge inside a near atmospheric-pressure-temperature reactor. The system is energized by a continuous stream of very short high-voltage pulses. The exhaust gas to be treated flows through the reactor. The methods applied involve the development of robust cold plasma systems, industrial applications and measuring technologies. Tests of the systems were performed at many industrial sites and involved control of airborne VOC (volatile organic compound) and odor. Electrical, chemical and odor measuring data were collected with state-of-the-art methods. To explain the test data an approximate solution of global reaction kinetics of pulsed plasma chemistry was developed. It involves the Lambert function and, for convenience, a simple approximation of it. The latter shows that the amount of removal, in good approximation, is a function of a single variable. This variable is electric plasma power divided by gas flow divided by input concentration. In the results sections we show that in some cases up to 99% of volatile pollution can be removed at an acceptable energy requirement. In the final sections we look into future efficiency enhancements by implementation of (sub)nanosecond pulsed plasma and solid state high-voltage technology and by integration with catalyst technology. Compared to traditional food processing methods, innovative techniques can provide more efficient solutions in the processing of products. Research on alternative non-thermal methods in food technology suggests their possible benefits, including enhancing sensory and nutritional quality, minimizing environmental impact, and increasing production efficiency, which are a significant challenge in the modern food industry. Wood modification is an excellent and increasingly used method to expand the application of woody materials. Traditional methods, such as chemical or thermal, have been developed for the targeted improvement of some selected properties, unfortunately typically at the expense of others. These methods generally alter the composition of wood, and thus its mechanical properties, and enhance dimensional stability, water resistance, or decrease its susceptibility to microorganisms. Although conventional methods achieve the desired properties, they require a lot of energy and chemicals, therefore research is increasingly moving towards more environmentally friendly processes. The advantage of modern methods is that in most cases, they only modify the surface and do not affect the structure and mechanical properties of the wood, while reducing the amount of chemicals used. Cold plasma surface treatment is one of the cheapest and easiest technologies with a limited burden on the environment. In this review, we focus on cold plasma treatment, the interaction between plasma and wood compounds, the advantages of plasma treatment compared to traditional methods, and perspectives. The aim of this paper was to assess the effectiveness, safety, stability, and mechanism of tooth whitening using a direct current cold atmospheric pressure air plasma microjet (PMJ) with the assistance of whitening gels (blank or containing 3% H2O2). The results were compared with those obtained from teeth treated with blank gel only and with gel containing 35% H2O2 in a cold light bleaching system. Tooth whitening effectiveness right after various treatments as well as 18 months after treatment was evaluated via CIELAB colorimetry. Type K thermocouple, scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectroscopy were employed to study the temperature of pulp chamber, tooth surface morphology, and elemental composition of enamel surface, respectively. Teeth in the plasma groups were effectively whitened in 5 min, though no significant difference was observed between the two plasma groups. Pulp chamber temperature was shown to remain below 35 °C. Morphological and surface elemental analysis showed similar changes to tooth enamel in the plasma groups and in the cold light group. These observations suggested that PMJ with blank gel was more effective for tooth whitening with acceptable safety and good stability. Optical emission spectroscopy results revealed that reactive oxygen species, such as O, •OH, and NO, in plasma may play a dominant role in the process of plasma tooth whitening. In this study, the authors investigated how the ionization of argon gas produced a cold plasma that altered the optical characteristics of platinum (Pt) nanostructures deposited through the spin-coating deposition technique. 3, 6, and 9 min of light were shone on the ready-made nanostructures. Each sample was analyzed for its dielectric constant, transmittance, absorbance, absorption coefficient, energy gap, and extinction coefficient. Plasma exposure is observed to enhance absorbance, absorption coefficient, refractive index, and dielectric constant while decreasing the energy gap and transmittance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first research to examine how cold atmospheric plasma affects the transparency of platinum nanostructures. Hospitals discharge large amounts of pathogenic microbes into municipal wastewater and aquatic environments, posing significant challenges in terms of human health and ecological impacts. It is crucial to develop and implement effective techniques for managing and treating such wastewater. In this study, we aimed to design a potential strategy for the treatment of microbial hospital wastewater (HWW) by utilizing a combination of cold plasma (CP) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). Melia azedarach (M. azedarach) leaf extract was used for the biosynthesis of Ag NPs by the green method. Various techniques were employed for Ag NPs characterization. The results obtained from the ultra-violet visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy showed ab absorbance peak at 430 nm. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images revealed that the biosynthesized Ag NPs appeared spherical with an average size of 13.6 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis determined the formation of Ag NPs. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated the involvement of biomolecules in the reduction and stabilization of the Ag NPs. For the treatment of HWW, the antibacterial activity of Ag NPs was evaluated at the highest concentration (1:1), while CP was tested at the longest duration of exposure (60 s). The results showed a significant reduction in the average number of bacterial colonies to 18 and 5 colonies, respectively, compared to the control sample (without treatment), which had an average of 175 colonies. Moreover, the combined treatment of Ag NPs and CP resulted in complete inhibition of bacterial growth, with an average number of zero colonies for all samples and treatment conditions. Based on these findings, we believe that the synergistic effect between Ag NPs and CP holds promise as an advanced treatment technology for the elimination of microbes from HWW. To establish the safe and reproducible effects of cold plasma (CP) technology on food products, this study evaluated the gelatinization parameters, fatty acid profile, and hygroscopic properties of rice grains repeatedly treated with low-pressure radiofrequency (RF) helium CP (13.56 MHz, 140 Pa, 120 W-20s, 0–4 times, and 300 g sample). Compared with the untreated (zero times) sample, with an increase in CP treatment times from one to four on rice, the water contact angle and cooking time decreased, while the water absorption rate and freshness index increased, and the pH value remained unchanged. CP repeating treatments essentially had no effect on the gelatinization enthalpy, but significantly increased the peak temperature of gelatinization. From the pasting profile of rice that has been repeatedly CP treated, the peak, breakdown, and setback viscosities in flour paste decreased. CP repeating treatments on rice did not change the short-range molecular order of starch. Compared with the untreated sample, the first helium CP treatment maintained the content of C18:1n9c, C18:2n6c, and C18:3n3, but the second to fourth CP treatment significantly decreased contents of these fatty acids (FAs) as the C18:0 content increased. The first three CP treatments can increase the water and sucrose solvent retention capacity in rice flours. CP repeatedly treated rice first exhibits the similar monolayer water content and solid surface area of water sorption. Principal component analysis shows that contact angle, pasting parameters, and fatty acid profile in milled rice are quite sensitive to CP treatment. Results support that the effect of low-pressure RF 120W helium CP treatment 20 s on rice grains is perdurable, and the improvement of CP intermittent treatments on rice cooking and pasting properties is an added benefit, and the hygroscopic properties of rice was kept. The use of cold plasma (CP) seed treatment is an emerging agricultural technology that exhibits the potential to enhance nodulation and symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) in legumes. CP is composed of a diverse mixture of excited atoms, molecules, ions, and radicals that have the potential to affect the physical properties of the seed and influence gene expressions that could have a lasting impact on the nodulation, SNF, growth, and yield of legumes. The direct participation of the CP in the nodulation process and its correlation with the escalation of nodules and SNF is still not fully understood. This review discussed four areas in the nodulation and SNF process that can directly or indirectly affect CP seed treatments: root–rhizobia signal exchange pathways, root/shoot growth and development, phytohormone production, and the nitrogen fixation process. Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea is a serious disease of grape (Vitis vinifera) during storage. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of atmosphere cold plasma (a novel and nonthermal technology) on inactivation of B. cinerea and preservation of chemical, physical, and mechanical characteristics of grape inoculated with B. cinerea. Herein, different time of cold plasma (0, 10, 20, and 40 s) was firstly considered to be the main factors, besides different storage time (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 weeks) at 4°C. According to the results, plasma treatment exhibited inhibitory effect on gray mold percentage and microbial load of B. cinerea (log CFU g−1) during postharvest storage. So, in the last week, the gray mold percentage and microbial load in the control were 100% and 3.6 log CFU g−1, and in 40‐s plasma were 4.5% and 2.53 log CFU g−1, respectively. Although the minimum infection and microbial load were observed in 40‐s plasma, better postharvest quality preservation was observed in short‐time cold plasma treatment (≤20 s). Forty‐second plasma caused fruit tissue destruction and negatively decreased mechanical indices (Emod: 0.0028, Fmax = 1.78, and W = 3.18) and weight loss (91.9) in comparison with ≤20‐s plasma, in which mechanical indices (Emod =0.0077, Fmax = 3.6, and W = 10.06) and weight loss (1/1) were higher. The long‐time cold plasma treatment (40 s) had also maximum effects on color changes (10) and surface temperature (2.8°C). Although the highest TSS and TA were observed in 40‐s Plasma, but different time of plasma treatments had no effect on pH. Altogether, these results indicate that the short‐time cold plasma treatment can inactivate B. cinerea on grape berries and preserve crop quality properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized by cold plasma in inhibiting biofilm formed by Staphylococcus epidermidis both phenotypically and genotypically. The resultant AgNPs were characterized by using different parameters, color change, Xray diffraction (XRD), zeta potential, feld emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. Moreover, their efficacy in inhibiting S. epidermidis biofilm was studied by the microtiter plate method. The results revealed that cold plasma succeeded in the synthesis of AgNPs with a size range of 10-20 nm. Markedly, the present findings indicated a significant decrease (P < 005) in the intensity of all tested biofilm alongside the down-regulation of accumulation-associated protein (aap) and AtlE in the presence of AgNPs as compared with non-treated cells. Background and Objectives: Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum), as starchy plants, have been highly esteemed for their rich supply of nutrients. Numerous studies have investigated the potential health benefits of potatoes and explored potential solutions. Among these considerations, the discussion regarding microbial contaminants has remained an important topic. Materials and Methods: The present study used cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) to evaluate the microbial quality (including mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria and mold and yeasts) of raw potato slices during a 14-day storage period. To achieve this goal, the duration of CAP exposure was set at 5, 10, and 15 min, utilizing an electric voltage of 60 kV and a specific frequency of 20 kHz. Results: The findings revealed the effectiveness of CAP pre-treatment in inhibiting microbial growth over the 14 days when compared to the control sample (untreated sample), with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). Moreover, with an extension of the CAP exposure duration to 15 min, there was a significant reduction in the logarithmic count of mesophilic, psychrotrophic microorganisms, molds, and yeasts (4.95, 2.85, and 2.22CFU/g, respectively) in comparison to the control groups (7.5, 5.62, and 5.5CFU/g) on days 0, 7, and 14 of the storage periods (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study highlight the potential of CAP pre-treatment on reducing the microbial load in raw potato slices prior to frying, which could potentially influence the overall quality of potato-based products. Native starches have limited use in the food industry owing to their insolubility in cold water and lack of reactivity. Native starches are susceptible to chemical, physical, and enzymatic modification. This article examines cold plasma as one of the physical mechanisms of starch modification. The structure of each system is analyzed, and the effects of cold plasma at atmospheric pressure on the functional, thermal, molecular, morphological, and physicochemical aspects of various starches researched by different researchers are described. Changes in the characteristics of DBD plasma-modified starch are primarily caused by the depolymerization and cross-linking of amylose and amylopectin side chains. The molecular weight, viscosity, and gelatinization temperature decrease after DBD plasma treatment. The plasma etching of starch granules improves their surface energy and hydrophilicity. Mycotoxins are toxic, which can endanger health of animals and humans, causing a lot of economic losses to the food industry. Cold plasma is an emerging non-thermal technology featuring green and high efficiency, which can degrade mycotoxin in an effective way. To provide a theoretical reference for the application of cold plasma in the degradation of food mycotoxins, this paper first summarized the mycotoxins degradation mechanisms after cold plasma treatment. The key point is the structure of degradation products and possible degradation pathways of aflatoxin, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone after cold plasma treatment under different discharge modes and treatment conditions. What’s more, the degradation effect of cold plasma on pure mycotoxins and mycotoxins on food matrix were reviewed. Finally, the safety and feasibility of cold plasma treatment was talked about from the perspective of toxicity, which was separated into structural, cellular and animal toxicity of the mycotoxin degradation products.

Cold plasma (CP) is a non-thermal preservation technology that has been successfully used to decontaminate and extend the shelf life of aquatic products. However, the preservation effect of CP treatment is determined by several factors, including voltage, time, and gas compositions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of gas composition (GasA: 10% O2, 50% N2, 40% CO2; GasB: air; GasC: 30% O2, 30% N2, 40% CO2) on the lipid oxidation of tilapia fillets treated after CP treatment. Changes in the lipid oxidation values, the percentages of fatty acids, and sensory scores were studied during 8 d of refrigerator storage. The results showed that the CP treatment significantly increased all the primary and secondary lipid oxidation values measured in this study, as well as the percentages of saturated fatty acids, but decreased the percentages of unsaturated fatty acids, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids. The lipid oxidation values were significantly increased in the GasC-CP group. After 8 d, clearly increased percentages of saturated fatty acids, a low level of major polyunsaturated fatty acids (especially linoleic (C18:2n-6)), and a decrease in the percentages of eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3) were found in GasC-CP; that is, the serious oxidation of lipids was found in the high O2 concentration group. In addition, the sensory score was also lower than that of the hypoxia CP group. Therefore, high O2 concentrations can enhance lipid oxidation and the changes in the fatty acid concentration. Controlling the O2 concentration is reasonable to limit the degree to which lipids are oxidized in tilapia after the in-package CP treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Milk, as an almost complete food, has been a necessity of infants since their birth. Its balanced nutritional composition acts as a great site for microorganisms. Thus, the threat of its spoilage always persists as soon as it leaves the udder. The preservation of milk has been a concern since the development of humankind to keep it safe for consumption after a while. Earlier development of humans raised the idea of the conversion of milk into different forms i.e. curd, cheese, etc. In the later centuries, the beginning of dairy industry started using various means and technologies to eliminate the contamination from milk and milk products to overcome the issue of shelf life and to assure safety and quality. The heat treatment came in the most popular form as pasteurization and sterilization. However, due to the adverse effect of heat on the nutrition of milk the dairy industry strives for innovation in the process and technology. The current consumer demand for minimally processed, qualitative, and nutritional food makes the application of non-thermal technologies such as high-pressure processing (HPP), pulsed electric field (PEF), cold plasma, irradiation, ultrasonication, ohmic heating, microfiltration, bactofugation, etc. to enhance shelf life of products. In this review article, the role of three major aspects of the dairy industry viz. milk processing, use of additives, and various packaging techniques pertaining to the enhancement of the shelf life of milk and milk products are discussed. Knowledge of the chemical changes caused during plasma treatment is essential to enhance food quality. In this work, the influence of two cold plasma technologies, dielectric barrier discharge plasma and glow discharge plasma, on the phenolic profile of araça-boi (Eugenia stipitata) juice was investigated and assessed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Eight phenolic compounds were identified in araça-boi, with cinnamic acid being the major phenolic compound of the fruit juice, followed by protocatechuic acid. The effects of excitation frequency and plasma flow rate were evaluated because these are the main operating conditions that can be set for plasma treatments. The phenolic profile slightly changed due to the reaction of the phenolics with the reactive plasma species produced during the treatment, with the highest increase in phenolic content observed in the dielectric barrier discharge plasma operating at 1000 Hz. Both plasma systems increased the bioavailability of phenolic compounds in the juice, which could be increased by up to 201% using the dielectric barrier discharge plasma. Plasma application increased the concentration of cinnamic, hydrocinnamic, benzoic, and p-coumaric acids. Overall, plasma treatment improved the bioavailability of the phenolic compounds and resulted in slight changes to the phenolic profile of araça-boi juice. Thus, the technology showed a positive effect on araça-boi juice. Nowadays, cold plasma technology is highly involved in textile processing either to assist conventional wet-chemical processing and/or create innovative products. Plasma surface treatment is an ergonomically simple process, but the plasma process and its effect on the fibre surface are more complex due to the interplay of many concurrent processes at a time. The efficiency of plasma treatment mainly depends on the nature of textile material and the treatment operating parameters. The main objective of this review paper is to summarise and discuss the application of plasma treatment and its effect on the pre-treatment, dyeing, printing and finishing of natural and synthetic textile fibres. Cold plasma technology is gaining attention as a promising approach to enhancing the bioactivity of plant extracts. However, its impact on green coffee bean extracts (GCBEs) still needs to be explored. In this study, an innovative underwater plasma jet system was employed to investigate the effects of cold plasma on Coffea arabica GCBEs, focusing on the conjugation reflected by the change in composition and bioactivity. The DPPH radical scavenging antioxidant activity exhibited a gradual increase with plasma treatment up to 35 min, followed by a decline. Remarkably, at 35 min, the plasma treatment resulted in a significant 66% increase in the DPPH radical scavenging activity of the GCBE. The total phenolic compound content also displayed a similar increasing trend to the DPPH radical scavenging activity. However, the phenolic profile analysis indicated a significant decrease in chlorogenic acids and caffeine. Furthermore, the chemical composition analysis revealed a decrease in free amino acids, while sucrose remained unchanged. Additionally, the SDS-PAGE results suggested a slight increase in protein size. The observed enhancement in antioxidant activity, despite the reduction in the two major antioxidants in the GCBE, along with the increase in protein size, might suggest the occurrence of conjugation processes induced by plasma, particularly involving proteins and phenolic compounds. Notably, the plasma treatment exhibited no adverse effects on the extract's safety, as confirmed by the MTT assay. These findings indicate that cold plasma treatment holds significant promise in improving the functional properties of GCBE while ensuring its safety.
