This paper is a slightly revised version of a keynote address given at the 2015 National Quemoy University English Conference, Reimagining the Teaching of Language, Literature, and Culture, in Kinmen, Taiwan, on 5 June 2015. The author contends that teaching English as a Foreign Language is changing rapidly, and successful teachers and scholars need to be prepared for the future. He present six predictions about teaching and researching in the EFL discipline in the year 2020 and beyond, that there will be: (1) A growth of outcome-based instructional engineering, (2) A growth of affordance-based planning, (3) A growth of task-based instructional design, (4) A growth of affordance-based research, (5) Pressure for more curriculum integration of research findings, and (6) Increased scrutiny of peer review, including an expectation that raw data used in studies must be made available for public scrutiny.

Augmented reality (AR), a cutting-edge technology, has the potential to change the way students learn by superimposing virtual items and information onto the real environment. Through more immersive and interesting interactions with digital content, AR might help students better understand difficult concepts and boost their drive to learn. As a result of its contribution to student learning, AR has become increasingly appealing to educational researchers. This study aimed to descriptively explore the characteristics of AR studies in education and to qualitatively analyze the most influential ones indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) between 2000 and 2022. A scoping review was conducted to determine the sample of the AR studies in education based on the inclusion criteria. Accordingly, descriptive analyses were conducted to identify the characteristics of the AR studies in education between 2000 and 2022 in terms of publication year, country, affiliations, journals, funding agencies, and citation trends. Then, the research methodologies and implications were found among the most influential AR studies in education between 2000 and 2022 by synthesizing qualitatively. The overall results indicated that AR studies in education have been conducted since 2008, with an increasing number of studies over time. Based on the implications of the most influential studies identified in terms of citation numbers, it was detected that AR has the potential to enhance education and training by providing interactive and engaging environments, linking real-world contexts with digital resources, and promoting efficiency and effectiveness in learning. The International Conference on the Changing Academic Profession Project convened in Hiroshima City, Japan, January 24-25, 2014. It was jointly hosted by the Research Institutes of Higher Education at Hiroshima and Kurashiki Sakuyo Universities. The theme of the conference was "The Changing Academic Profession in Asia: The Formation, Work, Academic Productivity, and Internationalization of the Academy." Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and English as a medium of instruction (EMI) are emerging as the preferred contexts of language learning. CLIL and EMI classes continue to proliferate in schools around the globe. The aim of this paper is to investigate the current research trends in studies of motivation to learn within EMI and CLIL settings. We sought to identify the current countries of research, educational levels, and themes that prevail in EMI and CLIL motivation research. We performed a topic search of the keywords "CLIL" or "EMI" and the keyword "motivation" in the "Web of Science" database for Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) articles published in 2020. We analyzed 17 articles related to motivation within EMI or CLIL contexts. The results showed that European countries produced the most research, with Spain being the most prolific. A majority of the studies took place at the secondary and tertiary levels of education. Comparative studies of CLIL or EMI contexts with that of traditional classrooms emerged as the prevailing theme. Future research could include more studies regarding the impact of CLIL on students at the primary level of education, in addition to studies of students from varied socio-economic backgrounds. The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of globalization on career and technical education in Taiwan, Republic of China. Globalization has been characterized as a fundamental process of change. Especially after our country joined the WTO in 2001, the effects of globalization and the WTO regulations compelled career and technical education to change and face new and bold challenges. This paper addresses the essence of globalization, the features of Taiwan's career and technical education context, the impact of globalization on career and technical education and the corresponding strategies, and conclusion.

This study was requested by the Senate International Affairs Committee. The research questions included: (1) What factors affect the cumulative GPA (CGPA) of International students at TRU?; (2) What factors affect the retention of International students at TRU?; and (3) Are Student Success Courses among the significant factors for GPA and retention? The study included 6,051 International students who were enrolled at TRU from 1999/00 to 2009/10 (117 of whom took Student Success Courses). Participation in the Student Success Courses was not found to have a significant effect on either cumulative GPA or retention. The most significant factor affecting cumulative GPA was first term GPA; the most significant factor affecting student retention was cumulative GPA. East Asia is the region which has experienced unprecedented growth in the past few decades. This growth resulted in the increase in education opportunities and the empowerment of women. Modernization and globalization provided opportunities for many women in China, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan. Modern Asian women can obtain higher education and gain status in their careers; they are at the crossroads between tradition and modernity. This paper provides information about the women's movements in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan. Readers obtain an understanding of globalization and its impact on women's lives in these societies. It concludes that the status of women has improved dramatically over the last 30 years; but there are still obstacles that prevent women from achieving equity in political participation, equal pay, and equal share of household responsibilities. Drawing on 1386 questionnaire responses, 11- and 12-year old primary students in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan valued the same six orientations in their mathematics learning. These are achievement, relevance, practice, communication, information and communication technologies [ICT], and feedback. Each of these six values was also embraced to different degrees by students across the three regions. These findings shed light on how students' values might be used to support learning, at the same time emphasising that such values are culture-dependent. The Commission on International Adult Education (CIAE) of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) provides a forum for the discussion of international issues related to adult education in general, as well as adult education in various countries around the globe. The following purposes summarize the work of the Commission: (1) To develop linkages with adult education associations in other countries; (2) To encourage exchanges between AAACE and associations from other countries; (3) To invite conference participation and presentations by interested adult educators around the world; and (4) To discuss how adult educators from AAACE and other nations may cooperate on projects of mutual interest and benefit to those served. The Commission holds its annual meeting in conjunction with the AAACE conference. Using English as a global communicating tool makes Taiwanese people have to speak in English in diverse international situations. However, consonants and vowels in English are not all effortless for them to articulate. This phonological reduction study explores concepts about phonological (articulating system) approximation. From Taiwanese folks' perspectives, it analyzes phonological type, rate, and their associations with 2 genders. This quantitative research discovers Taiwanese people's vocalization problems and their facilitating solutions by articulating lessening. In other words, this study explains how English emerging as a global language can be adapted and fluently articulated by Taiwanese. It was conducted at National Changhwa University of Education from 2010 fall to 2011 spring, investigating Taiwanese university students' phonological lessening systems. It reveals how they face the phonetics challenges during interactions and give speeches by ways of phonological lessening. Taiwanese folks' lessening patterns belong to simplified pronouncing methods, being evolved through Mandarin, Hakka, and Holo phonetic patterns. This genre of facilitated articulation can be also titled as transformed or approximate methods of articulating formula. In this investigation, 59 students according to their individual articulating experiences provided their perceptions, based on their observations in their own English articulation systems. Statistics graphs analyzed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) display 4 consonants and 4 vowels that have been reduced and adapted. Moreover, the gender factor was taken into consideration, revealing male's and female's dissimilar difficulties in pronunciation. More specifically, this empirical study investigated the correlation between elements of gender and phonological reduction. Through statistical analysis, 8 intricate vowels and consonants are compared and contrasted based on Taiwanese students' perfections and difficulty-confessions in articulating them. Simplified phonetic patterns with Taiwanese accents involved into the articulating lessening system in Taiwanese students' English utterances were provided by the instructor. Based on 2 variables of female gender and male gender, the study discovered the lessening sequences in 8 phonetics. The significance of this study is its contribution to giving confidence to English speakers in Taiwan. Although they are non-native speakers, they still can resolve the pronunciation difficulty and talk with fluency by their created phonological reduction system. The purpose of this research is to compare the rural education practices of China, Taiwan, Canada and the United States. International comparisons of mathematics achievement find that students in Asian countries outperform those from the USA. Excluded from these studies, however, are students from rural areas in China. This study compares the math abilities of 272 selectively chosen 5th grade students from rural, central China, 361 students from rural, northern Taiwan and 95 students from rural, central Pennsylvania. The test instrument was the same as used in previous China vs. USA comparisons and focused on four subtopics: computation, number concepts, geometry and problem solving. The results showed that rural Chinese and Taiwanese students outperformed similar American students in the area of mathematics achievement. The rural Chinese and Taiwanese students were also found to be more focused on school and academics and less on social aspects of school life. Their parents held higher expectations for them to do well in school. However, these cultural differences were not able to explain away the overall math achievement gap among the Chinese, Taiwanese and American students. It is recommended that further study be conducted to explore possible factors that contribute to different math achievement among the countries by interviewing students, teachers, and the parents. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teachers' teaching effectiveness and school effectiveness in comprehensive high schools in Taiwan, Republic of China. The establishment of comprehensive high schools signals a new type of secondary education. In order to improve the quality of education in comprehensive high schools, it is necessary to examine their school effectiveness. Furthermore, Reynolds (1998) and Wu (2002) both indicated that teachers play an important role in classroom activities. To ensure educational quality and improve school effectiveness, it is necessary to investigate the relationship between teachers' teaching effectiveness and school effectiveness of these schools. This study collected data from 832 teachers in comprehensive high schools in Taiwan during the spring semester of 2004, using a questionnaire that was composed of background information, the Teachers' Teaching Effectiveness Scale and the School Effectiveness Inventory. Pilot tests of these two instruments were conducted to yield the formal research questionnaire. Finally, the data collected was analyzed by statistical methods including frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, reliability test, t-test, one-way ANOVA, one-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance, Scheffe method, Pearson product-moment correlation, canonical correlation, and stepwise multiple regression model. The major findings and conclusions were: (1) The levels of teaching effectiveness measures of comprehensive high school teachers were moderately high, with "good teacher student relationship" being the highest, and "teaching self efficacy" being the lowest. (2) The levels of school effectiveness measures of comprehensive high schools were moderately high, with "principal leadership" being the highest, and "curriculum implementation" being the lowest. (3) Gender, age, teaching experience, teaching program, school size, type of school, and school educational level, position, school area, and school background were not related to teachers' teaching effectiveness. (4) Gender, age, teaching experience, teaching program, school area, type of school, school background, and school history were significant to school effectiveness, while educational level and position were not related to school effectiveness. (5) The higher the teachers' teaching effectiveness, the higher the school effectiveness. (6) Canonical analysis results showed that "systematical presentation of instructional materials" was positively related to "teaching and evaluation" and "student achievements", and "teaching self-efficacy" was positively related to "student achievements" and "teachers' job satisfaction". (7) Gender, type of school, "teaching self efficacy", "systematical presentation of instructional materials" and "good classroom climate" were the five best predictors for school effectiveness. Based on the results of this study, some implications are drawn. (Contains 2 tables and 1 figure.)

Recent research focusing on Human Resource Development (HRD) in East Asia is attracting increasing attention. The purpose of the study is to explore the definition and practice of HRD, together with influencing cultural factors, in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Japan. The results indicate a difference in the definition and implementation of HRD among these three areas, and that the nature and role of HRD are influenced by cultural factors specific to each region examined. According to the Special Education Act of 1984, all the citizens have equal rights of education and work, so do the disabled. Because the mainstreaming concept in special education prevails in the educational arena, educators try to put retarded students in regular classes or at least in the regular learning environments (Conn, 2001). By this way, those retarded high school students can really strengthen their personal living ability, social life ability, and occupational ability (Ministry of Education, 2000). In order to fulfill the above objective of the special vocational programs, it is imperative to meet teachers' teaching support needs first. Especially when we consider the limited learning abilities of these retarded students, to educate the students requires vocational teachers to have sufficient teaching support measures which are closely related to both teaching effectiveness and students' employability (Chen, 1993; East, 1992). The purpose of this study was to explore the teaching support measures for secondary vocational teachers teaching mildly mental retarded students in senior vocational high schools in Taiwan, Republic of China. A questionnaire survey was employed as the primary research method. Subjects in this study included 407 teachers who taught special vocational education classes during the spring semester of 2002. Data was collected and analyzed using "the Teaching Support Measures Questionnaire". Pilot test of the instrument was conducted to yield the formal research questionnaire. Finally, data collected was analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. The major findings were: (1) The results of factor analysis indicated that there were four dimensions for teaching support measures, including parent and community involvement, administration support and advising services, in-service training, and teaching equipment in a sequential order of acquisition level. In general, the acquisition levels of the current overall teaching support measures and the dimensions were considered to be just above average. (2) There were significant differences in teaching support measures based on sex, special education teaching year, current job, school size, area, school type and major career field. However, no significant differences in teaching support measures were found based on age, marital status, education, teaching year, and special education background. (3) Teachers teaching special vocational education considered teaching support measures as the most urgent need. (4) "Parent and community involvement" was also crucial to teaching implementation, teaching activity, and transition from school to work services. (Contains 2 tables.)

The international business competencies needed by business graduates in the United States and Taiwan were identified through a literature review and a modified Delphi technique. Thirty-three experts, including policymakers, business educators, and international business practitioners, rated the importance of 42 statements compiled from reviews of international business competencies by the National Business Education Association and Fortune's Global 500 firms. Panel members added an additional nine competencies to the Delphi instrument. After three Delphi rounds, the panel members rated 39 of the 51 competencies as important or very important international business competencies. The following conclusions were reached: (1) the basic international business-related competencies identified from studies in the United States were also judged to be important in Taiwan; (2) for Taiwan to secure its economic competitiveness, it is important that business graduates of four-year colleges/universities be equipped with top foreign language skills, especially English; (3) it is vital for international business students to possess skills to cope with and manage advanced information technology in an increasingly global and competitive environment; (4) more knowledge of legal responsibilities in international business should be developed in business graduates; and (5) Taiwan's business graduates should learn more about China in general and about how businesses in China are managed. In this study, we examined the introduction of ratio and proportion concepts in six textbook series from four different regions, China, Japan, Taiwan and U.S. When analyzing the definition of ratio and equal ration as well as the types of ratio and proportion application problems included in each textbook series, we found similarities and differences among these textbook series both within and across regions. Future studies will be needed to examine these differences further. (Author)

This study examined the unique learning styles of Asian-American students, noting different Asian immigrants' backgrounds and relating Asian cultures to children's learning. Data came from a literature review; interviews with 19 families from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan who had a total of 33 children ages 6-21 years; and home and community observations conducted during spring 1998-spring 2000. Results indicated that all students came from nuclear intact families of foreign-born parents who were active in their children's academic lives. Students reported that structural teaching and clear expectations helped them focus on content being taught. Half of high school and college students preferred self-directed learning and individual projects. Teachers' approval and encouragement were important reinforcers. Parental supervision and support played an important role in children's learning. Parents provided a safe, supportive environment for their children and usually involved their children in extracurricular activities. They also pressured their children to be not only successful, but also outstanding. These children of East Asian parents adjusted well academically to American schools. They may need teacher and administrator psychological support and understanding to reduce pressure from the home and community. (Contains 12 references.) (SM)
