Extracting effective features from high-dimensional datasets is crucial for determining the accuracy of regression and classification models. Model predictions based on causality are known for their robustness. Thus, this paper introduces causality into feature selection and utilizes Feature Selection based on NOTEARS causal discovery (FSNT) for effective feature extraction. This method transforms the structural learning algorithm into a numerical optimization problem, enabling the rapid identification of the globally optimal causality diagram between features and the target variable. To assess the effectiveness of the FSNT algorithm, this paper evaluates its performance by employing 10 regression algorithms and 8 classification algorithms for regression and classification predictions on six real datasets from diverse fields. These results are then compared with three mainstream feature selection algorithms. The results indicate a significant average decline of 54.02% in regression prediction achieved by the FSNT algorithm. Furthermore, the algorithm exhibits exceptional performance in classification prediction, leading to an enhancement in the precision value. With an increase in the use of software, the incidence of bugs and resulting maintenance costs also increase. In open source projects, developer reassignment accounts for approximately 50%. Software maintenance costs can be reduced if appropriate developers are recommended to resolve bugs. In this study, features are extracted by applying feature selection for each developer. These features are entered into CNN-LSTM algorithm to learn the model and recommend appropriate developers. To compare the performance of the proposed model, open source projects (Google Chrome, Mozilla Core, and Mozilla Firefox) were used to compare the performance of the proposed method with a baseline for developer recommendation. In this paper, the performance showed 54% for F-measure and 52% for accuracy in open source projects. The scenario is very important to smartphone-based pedestrian positioning services. The smartphone is equipped with MEMS(Micro Electro Mechanical System) sensors, which have low accuracy. Now, the methods for scenario recognition are mainly machine-learning methods. The recognition rate of a single method is not high. Multi-model fusion can improve recognition accuracy, but it needs to collect many samples, the computational cost is high, and it is heavily dependent on feature selection. Therefore, we designed the DT-BP(decision tree-Bayesian probability) scenario recognition algorithm by introducing the Bayesian state transition model based on experience design in the decision tree. The decision-tree rules and state transition probability assignment methods were respectively designed for smartphone mode and motion mode. We carried out experiments for each scenario and compared them with the methods in the references. The results showed that the method proposed in this paper has a high recognition accuracy, which is equivalent to the accuracy of multi-model machine learning, but it is simpler, easier to implement, requires less computation, and requires fewer samples. The Industry 4.0 revolution is insisting strongly for use of machine learning-based processes and condition monitoring. In this paper, emphasis is given on machine learning-based approach for condition monitoring of shaft misalignment. This work highlights combined approach of artificial neural network and support vector machine for identification and measure of shaft misalignment. The measure of misalignment requires more features to be extracted under variable load conditions. Hence, primary objective is to measure misalignment with a minimum number of extracted features. This is achieved through normalization of vibration signal. An experimental setup is prepared to collect the required vibration signals. The normalized time domain nonstationary signals are given to discrete wavelet transform for features extraction. The extracted features such as detailed coefficient is considered for feature selection viz. Skewness, Kurtosis, Max, Min, Root mean square, and Entropy. The ReliefF algorithm is used to decide best feature on rank basis. The ratio of maximum energy to Shannon entropy is used in wavelet selection. The best feature is used to train machine learning algorithm. The rank-based feature selection has improved classification accuracy of support vector machine. This paper presents a kernel-based feature selection method for the classification of hyperspectral images. The proposed method aims at selecting a subset of the original features that are both 1) relevant (discriminant) for the considered classification problem, i.e., preserve the functional relationship between input and output variables, and 2) invariant (stable) across different domains, i.e., minimize the data-set shift between the source and the target domains. Domains can be associated with hyperspectral images collected either on different geographical areas or on the same area at different times. We propose a novel measure of data-set shift for evaluating the domain stability, which computes the distance of the conditional distributions between the source and target domains in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. Such a measure is defined on the basis of the kernel embeddings of the conditional distributions resulting in a nonparametric approach that does not require estimating the distribution of the classes. The adopted search strategy is based on a multiobjective optimization algorithm, which optimizes the two terms of the criterion function for the estimation of the Pareto-optimal solutions. This results in an effective approach of performing feature selection in a transfer learning setting. Abstract: Rough set approach is one of effective feature selection methods that can preserve the meaning of the features. So far, many feature selection (also called feature reduction) methods based on Rough set have been proposed. Of which, methods based on discernibility matrix are of considerable benefits for their conciseness and effectiveness, but have much higher space complexity. In order to reduce the storage space of the existing feature selection methods based on discernibility matrix, a novel condensing tree ( C-Tree ) structure was introduced, which is an extended order-tree, every nonempty element of a discernibility matrix is stored in one path in the C-Tree by given order of features and lots of nonempty elements share one path or sub-path, so the C-Tree has much lower space complexity as compared to discernibility matrix. However, the size of a C-Tree greatly depends on the order of features in most cases, hence how to set the proper order of features is of importance. To generate a higher compressed C-Tree , in this paper, after introducing an efficient trick for efficiently measuring the relative importance of every feature, we present a new feature ordering strategy according to the descending order of their importance. Further, based on the new feature ordering strategy, corresponding two heuristic algorithms for feature selection are introduced. Algorithms of this paper are experimented using six standard datasets and five synthetic datasets for testing both time and space complexities. In this paper, a Deep Learning approach is proposed to classify impact data based on the type of impact (Hard or Soft Impacts), via obtaining voltage signals from Piezo-Electric sensors, mounted on a composite panel. The data is processed further to be classified based on their energy, location and material. Minimalistic and Automated feature extraction and selection is achieved via a deep learning algorithm. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are employed to extract and select important features from the voltage data. Once features are selected the impacts, are classified based on either, Hard Impacts (simulated from steel impactors in a lab setting), Soft Impacts (simulated from silicon impactors in a lab setting) and their corresponding location and energy levels. Furthermore, in order to use the right data for training they are obtained from the signals as anomalies via Isolation Forests (IF) to speed up the process. Machine learning (ML) has recently gained popularity in a variety of domains for automating tasks. This has also been used in the evaluation of student responses/ assignments. This paper presents a qualitatively enhanced methodology for automated score prediction of subjective assignments. To consider all the major aspects of a human grader, 21 linguistic features related to syntactical, grammatical, sentimental, and readability are analyzed from the assignments. This study makes use of the ASAP competition dataset from Kaggle. The evaluation metric used is Quadratic Weighted Kappa (QWK), which measures the agreement between the human graded score and the predicted score. The effect of appropriate feature selection has been observed using Mutual Information Regression. Four ML algorithms are investigated on identified linguistic features. 3 Layer Neural Network with feature selection performed well among all chosen ML algorithms with average QWK of 0.678. To include the benefits of deep learning, a new hybrid model (LF-BiLSTM-att-FS) is proposed that combines a higher level deep neural network (DNN) with the selected features. Roll-to-roll systems that include rotary components such as driven rolls and idle rollers have significant potential for application in fabrication of flexible functional devices. They are inexpensive, mass producible, and environmentally friendly; however, even minor defects in their component bearings can render them susceptible to severe damage, which necessitates accurate diagnoses of bearing quality. The main steps in machine learning for fault diagnosis include feature extraction and selection. In the case of high-dimensional feature data, critical study is required to identify the best feature combination for proper diagnosis. Thus, this study aims to develop a method that extracts fault characteristics of a bearing from the measured signal and qualify the bearing according to the Mahalanobis distances and differences in density between normal and faulty data groups. Features extracted from vibration data collected from industry-scale roll-to-roll systems and CWRU data were trained with principal component analysis, other modern feature selection techniques, and the proposed algorithm-based eight classifiers. Compared with the existing algorithm, the accuracy increased by up to 9.24%, the training time decreased by up to 34.46%, and the number of features to obtain the maximum accuracy decreased by up to 59.92%. Feature selection in real-world data mining problems is essential to make the learning task efficient and more accurate. Identifying the best feature selection algorithm, among the many available, is a complex activity that still relies heavily on human experts or some random trial-and-error procedure. Thus, the automated machine learning community has taken some steps towards the automation of this process. In this paper, we address the metalearning challenge of recommending feature selection algorithms by proposing a novel meta-feature engineering model. Our model considers a broad collection of meta-features that enable the study of the relationship between the dataset properties and the feature selection algorithm performance in terms of several criteria. We arrange the input meta-features into eight categories: (i) simple, (ii) statistical, (iii) information-theoretical, (iv) complexity, (v) landmarking, (vi) based on symbolic models, (vii) based on images, and (viii) based on complex networks (graphs). The target meta-features emerge from a multi-criteria performance measure, based on five individual performance indexes, that assesses feature selection methods grounded in information, distance, dependence, consistency, and precision measures. We evaluate our proposal using a recently developed framework that extracts the input meta-features from 213 benchmark datasets, and ranks the assessed feature selection algorithms, to fill in the target meta-features in meta-bases. This evaluation uses five state-of-the-art classification methods to induce recommendation models from meta-bases: C4.5, Random Forest, XGBoost, ANN, and SVM. The results showed that it is possible to reach an average accuracy of up to 90% applying our meta-feature engineering model. This work is the first to use an extensive empirical evaluation to provide a careful discussion of the strengths and limitations of more than 160 meta-features. These meta-features, while designed to aid the task of feature selection algorithm recommendation, can readily be employed in other metalearning scenarios. Abstract: In order to clarify the role of AdaBoost algorithm for feature selection, classifier learning and its relation with SVM, this paper provided a brief introduction to the AdaBoost which is used for producing a strong classifier out of weak learners firstly. The original adaptive boosting algorithm and its application in face detection and facial expression recognition are reviewed. In pattern classification domain, support vector machine has been widely used and shows promising performance. However, it is expensive in terms of time-consuming. A sort of cascaded support vector machines architecture is capable of improving the classification accuracy based on AdaBoost boosting algorithm, namely, AdaboostSVM. This paper investigates a learning formulation called structured sparsity, which is a natural extension of the standard sparsity concept in statistical learning and compressive sensing. By allowing arbitrary structures on the feature set, this concept generalizes the group sparsity idea that has become popular in recent years. A general theory is developed for learning with structured sparsity, based on the notion of coding complexity associated with the structure. It is shown that if the coding complexity of the target signal is small, then one can achieve improved performance by using coding complexity regularization methods, which generalize the standard sparse regularization. Moreover, a structured greedy algorithm is proposed to efficiently solve the structured sparsity problem. It is shown that the greedy algorithm approximately solves the coding complexity optimization problem under appropriate conditions. Abstract: The inclusion of irrelevant, redundant, and inconsistent features in the data-mining model results in poor predictions and high computational overhead. This paper proposes a novel information theoretic-based interact (IT-IN) algorithm, which concerns the relevance, redundancy, and consistency of the features. The proposed IT-IN algorithm is compared with existing Interact, FCBF, Relief and CFS feature selection algorithms. To evaluate the classification accuracy of IT-IN and remaining four feature selection algorithms, Naïve Bayes, SVM, and ELM classifier are used for ten UCI repository datasets. The proposed IT-IN performs better than existing above algorithms in terms of number of features. The specially designed hash function is used to speed up the IT-IN algorithms and provides minimum computation time than the Interact algorithms. The result clearly reveals that the proposed feature selection algorithm improves the classification accuracy for ELM, Naïve Bayes, and SVM classifiers. Abstract: Feature selection is a key issue in the research on rough set theory. However, when handling large-scale data, many current feature selection methods based on rough set theory are incapable. In this paper, two novel feature selection methods are put forward based on decomposition and composition principles. The idea of decomposition and composition is to break a complex table down into a master-table and several sub-tables that are simpler, more manageable and more solvable by using existing induction methods, then joining them together in order to solve the original table. Abstract: There are irrelevant features that are redundant or significantly degrade the learning accuracy in the real-world complex classification tasks. This paper presents a new hybrid learning algorithm based on a cooperative coevolutionary algorithm (Co-CEA) with dual populations for designing the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) models with an explicit feature selection. This approach attempts to complete both the RBFNN construction and the feature selection simultaneously. The proposed algorithm utilizes the Co-CEA’s divide-and-cooperative mechanism, which utilizes the evolutionary algorithms executing in parallel to coevolve subpopulations, corresponding to the hidden layer structure and the dominate features respectively. The algorithm adopts the binary encoding to represent the feature subset and the matrix-form mixed encoding to represent the RBFNN hidden layer structure, and a complete solution is formed via collaborations among the two subpopulations. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms in references in terms of the classification accuracy, and it is able to obtain both prominent features and good RBFNN structure with higher prediction capability. Once defined, the access control policies and regulations would never be changed in a running and state transition process. However, it will give attackers the possibility of discovering vulnerabilities in the system, and the control systems lack the ability of dynamic perception of security state and risk, causing the systems to be exposed to risks. In this article, a dynamic Bell–LaPadula (BLP) model is proposed. The conditional random field (CRF) is introduced into the BLP model to optimize the rules. First, the model formalizes the security attributes, states of system, transition rules, and constraint models on the basis of the state transition of CRFs. After the historical system access logs are processed as the original dataset, a feature selection method is proposed to extract the requests and current states as feature vectors. Second, this article presents a rules training algorithm based on L-BFGS to implement the study and training of datasets, and then marks the logs in the test set through Viterbi algorithm automatically. On the base of these, a rule generation algorithm is proposed to dynamically adjust the access control rules based on the current security status and events of the system. Third, the security of CRFs-BLP is proved by theoretical analysis. Finally, the validity and accuracy of the model are verified by estimating the value of the precision, recall, and $F1$ -score. The performance of the most clustering algorithms highly relies on the representation of data in the input space or the Hilbert space of kernel methods. This paper is to obtain an appropriate data representation through feature selection or kernel learning within the framework of the Local Learning-Based Clustering (LLC) (Wu and Schölkopf 2006) method, which can outperform the global learning-based ones when dealing with the high-dimensional data lying on manifold. Specifically, we associate a weight to each feature or kernel and incorporate it into the built-in regularization of the LLC algorithm to take into account the relevance of each feature or kernel for the clustering. Accordingly, the weights are estimated iteratively in the clustering process. We show that the resulting weighted regularization with an additional constraint on the weights is equivalent to a known sparse-promoting penalty. Hence, the weights of those irrelevant features or kernels can be shrunk toward zero. Extensive experiments show the efficacy of the proposed methods on the benchmark data sets. Developing cyber security is very necessary and has attracted considerable attention from academy and industry organizations worldwide. It is also very necessary to provide sustainable computing for the the Internet of Things (IoT). Machine learning techniques play a vital role in the cybersecurity of the IoT for intrusion detection and malicious identification. Thus, in this study, we develop new feature extraction and selection methods and for the IDS system using the advantages of the swarm intelligence (SI) algorithms. We design a feature extraction mechanism depending on the conventional neural networks (CNN). After that, we present an alternative feature selection (FS) approach using the recently developed SI algorithm, Aquila optimizer (AQU). Moreover, to assess the quality of the developed IDS approach, four well-known public datasets, CIC2017, NSL-KDD, BoT-IoT, and KDD99, were used. We also considered extensive comparisons to other optimization methods to verify the competitive performance of the developed method. The aim of this study was to find an efficient method to determine features that characterize octave illusion data. Specifically, this study compared the efficiency of several automatic feature selection methods for automatic feature extraction of the auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) data in brain activities to distinguish auditory octave illusion and nonillusion groups by the difference in ASSR amplitudes using machine learning. We compared univariate selection, recursive feature elimination, principal component analysis, and feature importance by testifying the results of feature selection methods by using several machine learning algorithms: linear regression, random forest, and support vector machine. The univariate selection with the SVM as the classification method showed the highest accuracy result, 75%, compared to 66.6% without using feature selection. The received results will be used for future work on the explanation of the mechanism behind the octave illusion phenomenon and creating an algorithm for automatic octave illusion classification. In human emotion estimation using an electroencephalogram (EEG) and heart rate variability (HRV), there are two main issues as far as we know. The first is that measurement devices for physiological signals are expensive and not easy to wear. The second is that unnecessary physiological indexes have not been removed, which is likely to decrease the accuracy of machine learning models. In this study, we used single-channel EEG sensor and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, which are inexpensive and easy to wear. We collected data from 25 participants (18 males and 7 females) and used a deep learning algorithm to construct an emotion classification model based on Arousal–Valence space using several feature combinations obtained from physiological indexes selected based on our criteria including our proposed feature selection methods. We then performed accuracy verification, applying a stratified 10-fold cross-validation method to the constructed models. The results showed that model accuracies are as high as 90% to 99% by applying the features selection methods we proposed, which suggests that a small number of physiological indexes, even from inexpensive sensors, can be used to construct an accurate emotion classification model if an appropriate feature selection method is applied. Our research results contribute to the improvement of an emotion classification model with a higher accuracy, less cost, and that is less time consuming, which has the potential to be further applied to various areas of applications. Realization of navigation in virtual environments remains a challenge as it involves complex operating conditions. Decomposition of such complexity is attainable by fusion of sensors and machine learning techniques. Identifying the right combination of sensory information and the appropriate machine learning technique is a vital ingredient for translating physical actions to virtual movements. The contributions of our work include: (i) Synchronization of actions and movements using suitable multiple sensor units, and (ii) selection of the significant features and an appropriate algorithm to process them. This work proposes an innovative approach that allows users to move in virtual environments by simply moving their legs towards the desired direction. The necessary hardware includes only a smartphone that is strapped to the subjects' lower leg. Data from the gyroscope, accelerometer and campus sensors of the mobile device are transmitted to a PC where the movement is accurately identified using a combination of machine learning techniques. Once the desired movement is identified, the movement of the virtual avatar in the virtual environment is realized. After pre-processing the sensor data using the box plot outliers approach, it is observed that Artificial Neural Networks provided the highest movement identification accuracy of 84.2% on the training dataset and 84.1% on testing dataset.
