Management of vascular anomalies is an emerging multidisciplinary, super-specialisation field involving several surgical, medical and radiological specialties. Over the years, development in this field has been limited because of complex nomenclature and lack of consensus on the best practice for treatment of some of the more complex vascular anomalies. It was only in 1996 that the International Society of the Study of Vascular Anomalies defined nomenclature for the anomalies and gave clear guidelines on management, allowing for improved clinical practices. As In all fields of clinical medicine, the correct diagnosis of the vascular anomalies is essential to choose the appropriate treatment. This paper gives clear guidelines for diagnosis, understanding of the anomalies and discusses their management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Benefit–risk assessment in medicine has been a valuable tool in the regulation of medicines since the 1960s. Benefit–risk assessment takes place in multiple stages during a medicine’s life-cycle and can be conducted in a variety of ways, using methods ranging from qualitative to quantitative. Each benefit–risk assessment method is subject to its own specific strengths and limitations. Despite its widespread and long-time use, benefit–risk assessment in medicine is subject to debate and suffers from a number of limitations and is currently still under development. This state of the art review paper will discuss the various aspects and approaches to benefit–risk assessment in medicine in a chronological pathway. The review will discuss all types of benefit–risk assessment a medicinal product will undergo during its lifecycle, from Phase I clinical trials to post-marketing surveillance and health technology assessment for inclusion in public formularies. The benefit–risk profile of a drug is dynamic and differs for different indications and patient groups. In the end of this review we conclude benefit–risk analysis in medicine is a developed practice that is subject to continuous improvement and modernisation. Improvement not only in methodology, but also in cooperation between organizations can improve benefit–risk assessment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

IMPOTENCE ,SEXUAL dysfunction ,CONFERENCES & conventions ,ASSOCIATIONS, institutions, etc. ,MEDICINE - Abstract
The article presents the author's views on the Sexual Medicine Society of North America 2002 meeting, which was actually held in Florida in January 2003. The reason that this meeting was an invited speaker symposium and was held in the early Winter of 2003 as opposed to 2002 was out of respect to the International Society of Sexual and Impotence Research whose biennial meeting was held in Montreal, Quebec in the Fall of 2002. So as not to interfere with this important international meeting in which abstracts were presented, the North American Society decided to provide for their members what should become a traditional symposia-type meeting in even years.

The article outlines the medical history of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) in Great Britain since 1907. It could be noted that RSM's transformation from the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society loosely designated specialist. This transformation could be attributed to the merger of 17 societies with the federal structure. This is considered to be the first acceptance made by a national institution assessing that the practice of medicine is becoming specialized.

A study was done to determine why elderly users of hypertension medication seek or avoid prescription drug information. Subjects were users of the American Association of Retired Persons Pharmacy Service who returned a questionnaire that measured theoretically relevant motivations and corresponding knowledge and behaviors. Analysis indicated four distinct segments of information seekers: the ambivalent learners, who viewed themselves as vulnerable to negative health information, not particularly healthy, but receptive to drug information; the uncertain patients, who perceived difficulty adhering to the regimen and reported low levels of information receipt from health professionals; the risk avoiders, who viewed information-seeking as a risk-control coping strategy; and the assertively self- reliant, who were the least receptive to information about their medication. The authors postulate different message strategies that could be targeted to these four segments in response to their informational needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The question of how to measure, assess and optimise the returns from investment in health and medical research (HMR) is a highly policy-relevant issue. Research Impact Assessment Frameworks (RIAFs) provide a conceptual measurement framework to assess the impact from HMR. The aims of this study were (1) to elicit the views of Medical Research Institutes (MRIs) regarding objectives, definitions, methods, barriers, potential scope and attitudes towards RIAFs, and (2) to investigate whether an assessment framework should represent a retrospective reflection of research impact or a prospective approach integrated into the research process. The wider objective was to inform the development of a draft RIAF for Australia's MRIs.Methods: Purposive sampling to derive a heterogeneous sample of Australian MRIs was used alongside semi-structured interviews with senior executives responsible for research translation or senior researchers affected by research impact initiatives. Thematic analysis of the interview transcriptions using the framework approach was then performed. Results: Interviews were conducted with senior representatives from 15 MRIs. Participants understood the need for greater research translation/impact, but varied in their comprehension and implementation of RIAFs. Common concerns included the time lag to the generation of societal impacts from basic or discovery science, and whether impact reflected a narrow commercialisation agenda. Broad support emerged for the use of metrics, case study and economic methods. Support was also provided for the rationale of both standardised and customised metrics. Engendering cultural change in the approach to research translation was acknowledged as both a barrier to greater impact and a critical objective for the assessment process. Participants perceived that the existing research environment incentivised the generation of academic publications and track records, and often conflicted with the generation of wider impacts. The potential to improve the speed of translation through prospective implementation of impact assessment was supported, albeit that the mechanism required development. Conclusion: The study found that the issues raised regarding research impact assessment are less about methods and metrics, and more about the research activities that the measurement of research translation and impact may or may not incentivise. Consequently, if impact assessment is to contribute to optimisation of the health gains from the public, corporate and philanthropic investment entrusted to the institutes, then further inquiry into how the assessment process may re-align research behaviour must be prioritised.
