The authors explore the intraspecific history of Ebola virus Zaire (EBOVZ), and conveys that the virus association with the fruit bats in the sampled area can only be traced back a few years. They argue that the phylogenetic analysis of the viral polymerase (L) gene derived from three species of fruit bats caught near affected villages may constitute a long-missing wildlife reservoir for EBOVZ, and the amplified virus is the product of mutations that have accumulated within the last 30 years.
