To meet the 2050 EU decarbonization goals, there is a need for new and innovative ideas to increase energy efficiency, which includes reducing the energy consumption of buildings and increasing the use of on-site renewable energy sources. One possible solution for achieving efficient thermal energy transition in the building sector is to assign new functionalities to the building envelope. The building envelope can function as a thermal energy storage system, which can help compensate for irregularities in solar energy availability. This can be accomplished by utilizing phase change materials as the energy storage medium in the building envelope. In this paper, two phase change materials with different melting temperatures of 21 °C and 28 °C are compared for their application in a dynamic solar building envelope. Both experimental and numerical studies were conducted within the scope of this study. The laboratory testing involved simulating the conditions of the four seasons through steady-state and dynamic experiments. The performance of the phase change materials was evaluated using a small-scale PASLINK test stand that imitates indoor and outdoor conditions. A numerical model of a small-scale building envelope was created using data from laboratory tests. The purpose of this model was to investigate how the tested phase change materials perform under different climate conditions. The experimental findings show that RT21HC is better at storing thermal energy in the PCM and releasing it into the indoor area than RT28HC. On the other hand, the numerical simulation results demonstrate that RT28HC has an advantage in terms of thermal storage capacity in climates found in Southern Europe, as it prevents overheating of the room. Accounting for nearly 40% of final energy consumption, buildings are central to European energy policy. The Directive on Energy Performance of Buildings establishes a benchmarking system known as cost-optimality to set minimum energy performance requirements in new and existing buildings. This paper applies the cost-optimal methodology to an existing structure located in the Mediterranean area (Southern Italy). The building is composed of two units that have been considered for different uses: hotel and multi-residential. Several energy efficiency and renewable measures have been implemented both individually and as part of packages of measures. The cost-optimal solution has been identified as able to optimize energy consumption and costs from financial and macroeconomic perspectives. The first reference building (hotel use) shows a maximum reduction of primary energy and CO2 emission of about 42%, falling within the CasaClima energy class D, while the second reference building (residential use) achieves a value of 88% for primary energy and 85% for CO2 emissions, falling into class B. Thermal dispersions through the envelope can be limited using a suitable combination of insulating materials while a variety of technical variants are selected, such as VRF (variant refrigerant flow) systems, heat pumps with fan coils associated with controlled mechanical ventilation, solar thermal and photovoltaic. This paper illustrates the development of energy retrofit projects, in order to reach a balance between efficiency measures and costs for a building having two different uses, providing guidance to similar case studies related to a warm climate. Buildings occupy an important role in our modern society. However, the existing buildings have a very low thermal protection, leading to high levels of energy consumption making the buildings sector among the most significant CO2 source in Europe. Even if new buildings have high performance levels, the majority of the building stock is represented by older buildings which require renovation work. The European Union has imposed important reduction of specific energy consumption in all sectors, but energy conservation in buildings remains a key element in obtaining the sustainable development as evidence of human solidarity beyond the limits of space and time. In this paper the importance of the energy reductions in the building sector is outlined and both the energy policy and building stock statistics in EU and Romania are presented. Due to the energy transformation in buildings, the proportions of energy consumption for heating, ventilation and domestic hot water preparation (DHW) have changed. The latter component can now play a significant role, not only in the context of the annual heat demand, but also in the context of selecting the peak power of the heat source. In this paper, the comparison of chosen methods for its calculation is presented. The results show that for contemporary residential buildings, the peak power for DHW preparation can achieve the same or higher value as the peak power for heating and ventilation. For this reason, nowadays the correct selection of the peak power of a heat source for DHW purposes becomes more important, especially if it uses renewable energy sources, because it affects its size and so the investment cost and economic efficiency. It is also indicated that in modern buildings, mainly accumulative systems with hot water storage tanks should be taken into account because they are less sensitive to design errors (wrongly selected peak value in the context of the uncertainty of hot water consumption) and because they result in acceptable value of peak power for DHW in comparison to heating and ventilation. Around 30% of the European building stock was built before 1950, when no regulations about energy efficiency were in force. Since only a small part of them has been renovated by now, the energy performance of this building stock is on average quite poor, resulting in a significant impact on the energy balance of European countries, as confirmed by data published by ISTAT (Italian National Statistical Institute). However, energy retrofit in historic edifices is a quite demanding issue as any intervention must take into account the need to preserve existing building materials and appearances while also allowing reversibility and low invasiveness. As an example, in these buildings it is not possible to apply an ETICS (External Thermal Insulation Composite System), since this would alter the historic and architectural value of the façade. On the other hand, internal insulation would have the drawback of reducing the net useful floor area, which also implies a loss of economic value. Moreover, internal insulation may induce overheating risks and mold formation. In this paper, all these issues are investigated with reference to an existing historic building located in southern Italy, showing that a retrofit strategy aimed at energy savings and cost-effectiveness is still possible if suitable materials and solutions are adopted. Building hygrothermal performance, indoor air quality and energy consumption depend heavily on envelope airtightness. Over the last three decades, single-family dwellings have been amply studied in this respect by researchers in North Europe, the United States and Canada. However, very few studies have been conducted on airtightness in multi-family housing in warm climates such as Mediterranean Europe. This paper aims to enhance the understanding of building airtightness in early twenty-first-century multi-family buildings in southern Spain. Blower Door tests were conducted in 45 units in seven such buildings. The main airtightness parameter values found are reported and compared to the data for other buildings in southern Europe. The paper includes a statistical analysis of the findings, characterises building types and describes the protocol used to identify and quantify air leakage pathways. The conclusion drawn is that although a rough predictive model can be developed, the results are widely scattered due to the impact of the random component of manual construction, even in buildings with identical construction characteristics and types. Greening structures attract worldwide attention because of their multidisciplinary benefits. Green roofs are considered one of the best ways to eliminate summer overheating, mitigate climate change, or reduce the urban heat island effect. The winter season and its impact on building energy consumption are often overlooked. Common standards do not take a green roof structure into consideration because of possible high water content in their layers. Additional roof layers may have a positive effect during the winter; they help reduce surface overcooling in cloudless winter nights. This paper analyses experimental measurements taken on two different extensive green roofs and compares the results with a single-ply roof (R) with a PVC membrane. Surface overcooling of the R due to radiation reaching up to 10 °C, whereas the green roof membrane is protected. The influence of thermal loss is not so important for the current climate in Central Europe, as the required U-values are lower than 0.1. The temperature difference is reduced from 17 °C on the membrane to 0.7 °C on the top of the concrete slab. The green roof is still advantageous, and the vegetation surface has better thermal stability. The advantage is clearly recognisable in the area of the condensation zone. The difference between these two extensive green roofs is very small in regard to the accuracy of the temperature sensors. The paper presents the aim and objectives of modernizing the energy system of current buildings as well as of designing and executing new buildings with a high Energy and Environmental Performance. It is necessary to refer to the European Strategy (Europe 2020) and to the European Directives, transposed into the national legislation, while the technical and economic solutions to the objectives resulting from the above mentioned purpose complete the dimension of the logical structure of this procedure for reaching the objectives. The economic and especially social importance of comfortable and hygienic living conditions, without excessive costs and without affecting the climate also stems from the climate impact on the current living conditions and use of energy sources. The summer of 2003 had a tragic aftermath at the European and international level, consisting in over 40000 victims of the heat wave and of the buildings' incapacity to adapt to extremes such as exceptionally intense climate hazards. This highlighted the vulnerability of the built environment compared to climate hazards characterized through an ascending evolution, Romania included. The system of quantitative assessment of the building's Energy and Environmental Performance, part of the procedure for Energy and Environmental Configuration, entails separate expertise and diagnosis phases which allow elaborating scenarios and strategies for energy modernization. The modernization scenarios are elaborated based on the diagnosis of the building, scenarios differentiated through technical and economic indicators. Scenarios allow the modernization strategy to be elaborated. The energy modernization strategy / designing of new, energy performance buildings is based on the Energy Configuration of Buildings which is the detailed modelling of ownership transfer processes and the assessment of economic efficiency of design / exploitation solutions. The calculation methods are subject to validation and sensitivity analysis. The paper presents a case study starting from a condominium in Bucharest, built in 2010. The need to improve the energy efficiency of buildings has introduced the concept of nearly zero-energy buildings into European energy policies. Moreover, a percentage of the building stock will have to be renovated annually to attain high energy performance. Conventional passive interventions in buildings are focused on increasing the insulation of the building envelope to increase its energy efficiency during the operating phase. Often, however, intervention practices imply the incorporation of embodied energy into the building materials and increase the associated environmental impacts. This paper presents and evaluates a comparison of two different proposals for a real-world building renovation. The first proposal was a conventional project for energy renovation, while the second was a low-energy building proposal (following the Passivhaus standard). This study analysed the proposals using an integrated life cycle and thermal dynamic simulation assessment to identify the adequacy of each renovation alternative regarding the post-renovation energy performance of the building, including an evaluation of the introduction of a renewable insulation material into the low-energy building proposal, specifically a specific cork solution. The most significant conclusion was the convenience of the renovation, achieving energy savings of 60% and 80% for the conventional and Passivhaus renovations (ENERPHIT), respectively. The former supposed less embodied energy and environmental impacts but also generated less energy savings. The latter increased the embodied impacts in the building, mainly for the large amount of insulation material. The environmental implications of both proposals can be compensated for within a reasonable period of time, over 2 years in the majority of alternatives and impact categories. However, the ENERPHIT project was 30% better than the conventional proposal when the total lifespan of the building was considered. The introduction of cork did not fit the requirements for competing with the common non-renewable insulation materials because it did not imply better environmental performance in buildings, but cork insulation solutions currently present ample room for improvement. This paper proposes a novel Case Based Reasoning (CBR) application for intelligent management of energy resources in residential buildings. The proposed CBR approach enables analyzing the history of previous cases of energy reduction in buildings, and using them to provide a suggestion on the ideal level of energy reduction that should be applied in the consumption of houses. The innovations of the proposed CBR model are the application of the k -Nearest Neighbors algorithm (k-NN) clustering algorithm to identify similar past cases, the adaptation of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) meta-heuristic optimization method to optimize the choice of the variables that characterize each case, and the development of expert systems to adapt and refine the final solution. A case study is presented, which considers a knowledge base containing a set of scenarios obtained from the consumption of a residential building. In order to provide a response for a new case, the proposed CBR application selects the most similar cases and elaborates a response, which is provided to the SCADA House Intelligent Management (SHIM) system as input data. SHIM uses this specification to determine the loads that should be reduced in order to fulfill the reduction suggested by the CBR approach. Building energy efficiency has grown strong in a context of soaring energy prices, especially in Europe. The use of energy-saving devices strongly influences its improvement, but in many cases, it is far from sufficient., especially if the energy comes from renewable sources with forced production. In the case of buildings, these are usually photovoltaic (PV) sources. For this reason, energy management systems (EMS) are becoming increasingly popular as they allow the increase in self-consumption and reduce the size of energy storage. This article presents analyses of historical energy consumption profiles in selected small- and medium-sized buildings powered by renewable energy sources. The implementation limitations of this type of systems, depending on the profile of the building, were identified and guidelines were presented to assess low-cost solutions dedicated to small buildings and considering the actual conditions of existing systems. Statistical analyzes were conducted for the energy demand profiles of 15 different buildings. The analyzes consisted of the preparation of box plots for each hour of working days and the calculation of the relative standard deviation (RSD) index for annual profiles of 60 min periods. The analyzes showed that the RSD index has low values for commercial buildings (e.g., hospital 7% and bank 15%) and very high values for residential buildings—even over 100%. On this basis, it can be concluded about the usefulness of energy profiles for demand forecasting. The novelty of the proposed method is to examine the possibility of using measurement data as data to forecast energy consumption based on statistical analysis, dedicated to low-cost EMS system solutions. This paper analyses the energy and economic performance of roof and/or façades Building Integrated flat-plate PhotoVoltaic and Thermal (BIPVT) collectors for residential applications. Aim of the analysis is to assess the active and passive effects due to the building integration of solar technologies on the building energy consumptions. In particular, a comparison among innovative building-plant system configurations, based on BIPVT collectors for the simultaneous production of electricity, thermal energy, and domestic hot water, is carried out. The simulation models of the proposed system layouts are designed and implemented in TRNSYS simulation environment for the dynamic assessment of their energy and economic performance. By means of the developed simulation model, the occurring summer and winter building passive energy effects due to the PVT building integration are also analysed. Several case studies are developed by modelling a representative multi-storey residential building and by taking into account different European climates. For such case studies a suitable energy parametric analysis is performed by varying the thermal resistances and capacitances of the building envelope. By the simulation results interesting design and economic feasibility guidelines are obtained. In particular, by varying the weather location and the building-plant configuration, the adoption of BIPVT panels produces a decrease of the primary energy demands from 67% to 89%. The passive effects of the BIPVT system in both the winter and summer season are also assessed for all the investigated climate zones. The calculated economic profitability resulted slightly better for roof BIPVT panels than for roof and façade applications. To achieve carbon neutrality in the EU, it is important to renovate the existing EU residential buildings for a higher building energy efficiency. This study examines the impacts of several novel renovation technologies on energy consumption, CO2 emissions and indoor climates in southern European residential buildings through building-level simulations. Three typical residential buildings in South Europe were chosen as the demo buildings to implement the novel technologies. The technologies were classified into passive, ventilation and generation packages, and then simulated independently under the intermittent and continuous heating schedules. Additionally, two final combinations of renovation technologies were also simulated to demonstrate the maximum energy and CO2 emissions reduction potential of the demo buildings. All novel retrofit technologies manifested obvious effects on the energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, the effects were significantly affected by the heating schedule. When the intermittent heating schedule was switched to the continuous heating schedule, the relative energy conservation and CO2 emissions reduction potential of the thermal insulation improvement measures (e.g., bio-aerogel thermal insulation) increased, while those of the generation measures (e.g., solar assisted heat pump) diminished. Renovation with the final combinations reduced the primary energy consumption by up to 66%, 74% and 65% in the continuously heated Greek, Portuguese and Spanish demo buildings, the corresponding CO2 emissions reductions of which were 65%, 75% and 74%, respectively. Windows are central for the development of liveable nearly zero-energy homes and require careful consideration. Various studies have indicated that the effect of windows on energy consumption may change significantly with improved building insulation levels. Current guidelines on windows may therefore not apply in very well-insulated buildings, and more up-to-date information is needed about window solutions that are appropriate for the new conditions. This study maps the effect of multiple combinations of window size and basic glazing—and frame properties on energy, daylighting and thermal comfort in nearly zero-energy houses located in the European cities Rome and Copenhagen. The aim was to identify options that can support the easy and robust design of future homes with typical use of roof and façade windows. Hourly daylight levels were calculated in DAYSIM, while space heating demand and operative temperatures were calculated in EnergyPlus. The results support previous findings on the limited ability of nearly zero-energy buildings to utilise solar gains. It was found that U -values are becoming increasingly important for the energy performance of windows. The paper sketches the increased flexibility and related possibilities that may appear with improved roof window frame constructions and glazing U -values far lower than currently standard levels. Abstract: Energy efficiency in buildings is essential for economic, social, and environmental reasons. Under current European legislation, buildings have to be certified with an energy efficiency index. To provide a fair comparison of the energy performance in buildings we need a global and unified representation. In this paper we propose the Energy Efficiency Ontology (EEOnt) to provide a foundation upon which this requirement can be built. EEOnt extends the applicability of other ontological models of buildings incorporating energy efficiency data and knowledge that can be calculated with high spatial and temporal resolution in what we call an Energy Efficiency Landscape (EELB). These EELB''s provide significant information which allows a detailed diagnosis of the energy efficiency within the building. Consequently, EEOnt is capable of representing buildings and energy efficiency in a unified way. Furthermore, it supplies a tool for managing the energy efficiency in buildings and constructing national inventories. These two features link the global and particular needs of governments and users, thus becoming key to both improve the energy efficiency in buildings and to implement viable certification schemes. Abstract: The age of European existing building stock and the very low growth rate make energy retrofit a critical issue at the moment. The spreading of good practices is strongly hampered by their cost effectiveness. National legislation thermal requirements for retrofitting works play a fundamental role. If they are too strict, the initial economic investment could be too high if compared with energy savings achievable. The paper refers to a case study of improving fabric thermal performance of stone masonry buildings located in Cagliari – Italy. They were built in 1950s. The economic feasibility of different energy efficiency retrofits is evaluated. Two different scenarios are analyzed: the former according to the earlier Italian legislation (valid from 2006 to 2008), the latter according to the latest and strictest measures (valid from 2010). The results show that heavy thermal performance upgrades, even though compulsory, are not completely cost-effective in a mild Mediterranean climate area as far as payback time is concerned. Abstract: Cool roof technology is an energy efficient, financially viable and sustainable solution for mitigating heat islands and reducing building energy consumption for cooling. An EU supported project called Cool Roofs has achieved to promote this technology in the EU by the implementation of an Action Plan. The work is developed in four axes, technical, market, policy and end-users. The Action Plan is steered by the development of the European Cool Roof Council that brings together all related stakeholders. The main results of the project include the creation of the European Cool Roof Council (ECRC), five cool roof pilot studies, a database of cool roofing materials, a handbook and a toolkit to assist the better understanding of the technical aspects of the technology, a market promotion plan, a proposal for a successful strategy to overcome possible policy barriers and engage with key stakeholders who could support and accelerate the creation of an EU policy and regulatory friendly environment to cool roofs, the organization of workshops and seminars and other actions of dissemination. Abstract: A big amount of final energy in Europe is used in buildings (about 50%). Thermo insulating investments in the building sector can have a great impact on the improvement of the energetic efficiency of buildings and the reduction of the use of final energy in this sector. In the paper there were presented properly modified indicators for the economic assessment of the investments which is based on the thermal insulation of external walls of the building, such as: net present value, profitability indicator and payback period. For the ecological assessment the following indicators were introduced: ecological net present value, ecological indicator of profitability and ecological payback period. LCA technique was used in ecological indicators. For different variants of external walls, sources of heat and thermo insulating materials, the assessment of investments due to economic and ecological indicators was conducted. Abstract: Indoor air pollution has a negative impact on human health, comfort and productivity. Emissions, however, are often related to essential functions of the indoor environment and cannot be eliminated with source control. Ventilation is then used to dilute these pollutants to acceptable concentrations. Due to recent crises in the energy markets and the subsequent quest for higher efficiency in energy use, heat recovery ventilation has gained capstone status in sustainable building concepts. However, along with a reduction of ventilation heat loss, operating a heat recovery unit increases the pressure drop and fan power consumption in the system. These aspects are rarely traded off against each other and even more scarcely for a broad range of operating conditions. This paper addresses this trade-off based on primary energy, carbon dioxide emission, household consumer energy price and exergy frameworks for the different climates in Europe. The results presented here demonstrate that, for the moderate climate region of middle Europe, natural ventilation, simple exhaust mechanical ventilation and heat recovery ventilation have no clear advantage over each other as far as operating energy is concerned. Realistically low specific fan power will make heat recovery ventilation advantageous in virtually all tested conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In line with the energy development strategy of Europe, it is necessary to implement energy efficient buildings, in which the external enclosures are converters of solar energy to thermal. Therefore, the purpose of the publication was the scientific substantiation and development of the solar heating system with the use of rooftop solar panels. Graphical and analytical dependences of the coefficient of thermal efficiency of the solar panel in heat supply system from the angles of solar radiation incoming and the density of the radiation flux were obtained. Analysis of the results showed that the coefficient of thermal efficiency of the solar panel without transparent coating with the placement of pipelines of the circulation circuit of the coolant over the heat absorber increases by 50%.
