In this article, a graph-theoretic method (taking advantage of constraints among sets associated with the corresponding parity-check matrices) is applied for the construction of a double low-density parity-check (D-LDPC) code (also known as LDPC code pair) in a joint source-channel coding (JSCC) system. Specifically, we pre-set the girth of the parity-check matrix for the LDPC code pair when jointly designing the two LDPC codes, which are constructed by following the set constraints. The constructed parity-check matrices for channel codes comprise an identity submatrix and an additional submatrix, whose column weights can be pre-set to be any positive integer numbers. Simulation results illustrate that the constructed D-LDPC codes exhibit significant performance improvement and enhanced flexible frame length (i.e., adaptability under various channel conditions) compared with the benchmark code pair. Although extensive optimization of encoding and decoding schemes for joint source-channel coding (JSCC) systems has been conducted, efficient optimization schemes are still required for designing and optimizing the linking matrix between variable nodes of the source code and check nodes of the channel code. A scheme has been proposed for design and optimization of linking matrix with multi-edges by analyzing the performance of the JSCC system using the joint protograph extrinsic information transfer algorithm to calculate decoding thresholds. The proposed scheme incorporates structural constraints and is effective in designing and optimizing the multi-edges in linking matrix for the JSCC system. Experimental results have demonstrated that the designed and optimized linking matrix significantly improves the performance of the JSCC system. A key component of the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme based on double low-density parity-check (D-LDPC) codes is the introduction of a linking matrix between the source LDPC code and channel LDPC code, by which the decoding information including the source redundancy and channel state information can be transferred iteratively. However, the linking matrix is a fixed one-to-one mapping, i.e., an identity matrix in a conventional D-LDPC code system, which may not take full advantage of the decoding information. Therefore, this paper introduces a general linking matrix, i.e., a non-identity linking matrix, connecting the check nodes (CNs) of the source LDPC code and the variable nodes (VNs) of the channel LDPC code. Further, the encoding and decoding algorithms of the proposed D-LDPC coding system are generalized. A joint extrinsic information transfer (JEXIT) algorithm is derived for calculating the decoding threshold of the proposed system with a general linking matrix. In addition, several general linking matrices are optimized with the aid of the JEXIT algorithm. In this paper, a joint group shuffled scheduling decoding (JGSSD) algorithm for a joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme based on double low-density parity-check (D-LDPC) codes is presented. The proposed algorithm considers the D-LDPC coding structure as a whole and applies shuffled scheduling to each group; the grouping relies on the types or the length of the variable nodes (VNs). By comparison, the conventional shuffled scheduling decoding algorithm can be regarded as a special case of this proposed algorithm. A novel joint extrinsic information transfer (JEXIT) algorithm for the D-LDPC codes system with the JGSSD algorithm is proposed, by which the source and channel decoding are calculated with different grouping strategies to analyze the effects of the grouping strategy. Symbol-based iterative decoding is proposed for the transmission of classical Markov source signals over a quantum channel using a three-stage serial concatenation of a convolutional code (CC), a unity-rate code and a two-qubit superdense (SD) protocol. A modified symbol-based maximum a posteriori algorithm is employed for CC decoding to exploit the Markov source statistics during the iterative decoding process. Extrinsic information transfer chart analysis is performed to evaluate the benefit of the extrinsic mutual information gleaned from the CC decoder for sources with different correlations. We evaluate the bit error rate performance of the proposed coding scheme and compare it with the relevant benchmark schemes, including the turbo coding-based SD scheme. We demonstrate that a near-capacity performance can be achieved using the proposed scheme and when utilizing sources having a high correlation coefficient of $\rho =0.9$, the proposed coding scheme performs within 0.53 dB from the entanglement-assisted classical capacity. Two outer bounds on the admissible source region for broadcast channels with correlated sources are presented: the first one is strictly tighter than the existing outer bound by Gohari and Anantharam, while the second one provides a complete characterization of the admissible source region in the case where the two sources are conditionally independent given the common part. These outer bounds are deduced from the general necessary conditions established for the lossy source broadcast problem via suitable comparisons between the virtual broadcast channel (induced by the source and the reconstructions) and the physical broadcast channel. For transmission of memoryless Gaussian sources over channels with additive white Gaussian noise, the tradeoff between the distortion when the channel quality is good versus bad is investigated under the constraint that the distortion is optimal when the channel has the targeted median quality. The problem was proposed by Tian and Shamai, who subsequently proved remarkable achievability results for bandwidth expansion ratios $\kappa $ , which are integers or unit fractions, i.e., $\kappa =2,3,4,\ldots $ or $\kappa =1/2,1/3,1/4,\ldots $ Their result is extended here to all $\kappa \geq 2$ and $\kappa \leq 1/2$ by generalizing the hybrid digital/analog (HDA) scheme of Wilson et al. to the case of bandwidth mismatch. Finally, novel schemes are proposed for $1/2\leq \kappa <1$ and $1<\kappa \leq 2$ achieving nontrivial tradeoffs outperforming all known schemes. A joint source-channel coding problem that combines the efficient compression of discrete memoryless sources with their reliable communication over memoryless channels via binary prefix-free variable-length error-correcting codes (VLECs) is considered. Under a fixed free distance constraint, a priority-first search algorithm is devised for finding an optimal VLEC with minimal average codeword length. Two variations of the priority-first-search-based code construction algorithm are also provided. The first one improves the resilience of the developed codes against channel noise by additionally considering a performance parameter B_dfree without sacrificing optimality in average codeword length. In the second variation, to accommodate a large free distance constraint as well as a large source alphabet such as the 26-symbol English data source, the VLEC construction algorithm is modified with the objective of significantly reducing its search complexity while still yielding near-optimal codes. A low-complexity sequence maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoder for all VLECs (including our constructed optimal code) is then proposed under the premise that the receiver knows the number of codewords being transmitted. Simulations show that the realized optimal and suboptimal VLECs compare favorably with existing codes in the literature in terms of coding efficiency, search complexity and error rate performance.
