Serving as a crucial part of the Yangtze River Basin (YRB)'s flood control system, Flood Detention Areas (FDAs) are vital in mitigating large-scale floods. Urbanization has led to the development of urban FDAs, but significant losses could ensue if these FDAs are activated. With improved reservoirs and embankments, flood pressure in the middle reaches has lessened, posing challenges in balancing flood control and economic benefits. This paper presents a comparative analysis of land use, GDP, and population in FDAs and adjacent cities, enhancing our understanding of their disparities and interrelations. Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)–Entropy Weight Method (EW)–Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) comprehensive evaluation method, we assess changes in flood control and economic values in FDAs. The results show a conflict between flood control and economic policies in FDAs, highlighting their underestimated economic potential, especially in urban areas. This study identifies differences in economic development across FDAs and a strong correlation between flood control value and inundation rates. Based on evaluations and simulations of the 1954 flood, we provide recommendations for the FDAs' construction plan, which serves the development and flood management of the YRB and offer insights for similar assessments elsewhere. China's Yangtze River Basin has an increasingly strong demand for crude oil. As a seaborne import port for crude oil, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is under pressure to undertake the transshipment of crude oil to various oil terminals in the Yangtze River Basin. To alleviate the stress of crude oil transportation in Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, the port operator proposed the crude oil sea–river transshipment scheme in Nantong Port. Therefore, this paper aims to verify the feasibility of this scheme. We used the discrete event system modeling and entity relationship diagram method to construct the hierarchical and concept models of the Yangtze River Basin's crude oil sea–river transportation system. Furthermore, we developed corresponding simulation modules on the Witness platform and carried out a simulation experiment of the crude oil sea–river transfer scheme. In the experiment, we analyzed the influence of the transshipment ratio on berth utilization, waiting time, and sailing time of other ports by adjusting the parameter of the transshipment ratio. The experimental results show that when the transshipment rate reaches 100%, the utilization rates of loading and unloading berth in Nantong Port are 4% and 13%, respectively, which evidences that Nantong Port has transshipment potential. At the same time, the simulation experiment's statistical indicators, such as the utilization rate of oil berths, the queuing time of oil tankers, and the sailing time, not only confirm the feasibility of the crude oil sea–river transshipment scheme of Nantong Port but also confirm that the scheme is helpful to improve crude oil transportation efficiency. High Mountain Asia (HMA), with its high altitude, widely distributed snow and frozen soil, influences the climate of the northern hemisphere and even the world through thermal balance and the water vapor cycle and is also an indicator of global climate change. The influence of HMA snow cover on its surrounding areas has always been a research hotspot. Taking the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) of China as an example, this paper analyzes the relationship between winter snow depth in HMA and drought and flood in spring and summer in the YRB in the recent 40 years by using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). The results show that the influence of snow cover on drought and flood in spring is inversely different between eastern and western parts of HMA, while the effect in summer is consistent. When the snow depth is larger (smaller) in the east and smaller (larger) in the west in winter, the YRB is drier (wetter) in spring. When the overall snow depth in HMA is larger (smaller) in winter, the northern part of the middle and lower reaches of the YRB is drier (wetter) in summer. The results provide support for understanding the impact of HMA snow cover on the surrounding climate and some important indicators for drought and flood prediction in the YRB. The Yangtze River Basin (YRB), a key biodiversity area and a major economic zone in China, the biodiversity of the area is confronted with severe challenges. In this paper, we analyzed species distribution patterns based on a dataset with 18,538 seed plant species to identify hotspots and evaluate conservation effectiveness and gaps of the YRB. We calculated distribution patterns of species richness with the top 5% richness algorithm and complementarity algorithm, and reconstructed a phylogenetic tree and elucidated spatial phylogenetics. There were 214 hotspot grid cells covering only 6.8% of the study region, but containing 88% seed plant species. Then, we conducted correlation analysis on distribution patterns of different algorithms and species categories, which showed moderate or weak correlations between the top 5% richness algorithm and complementary algorithm. Conservation effectiveness analysis indicated there were 116 hotspot grid cells (accounting for 73.6% of the total species) protected by current conservation networks and there are many conservation gaps remaining. Finally, we used the maximum entropy model (MaxEnt) to predict suitable habitat areas of threatened species under current and future climate scenarios. Prediction analysis results indicated future expansion of suitable habitat to the southeast, and reduction in the central and western portions of the study area. When we considered anthropogenic areas, the suitable habitat was severely decreased, indicating the importance of optimizing the layout of conservation networks and comprehensive biodiversity conservation planning in the YRB. Wetlands are crucial to diverse societies and ecosystems but are threatened globally. Natural wetlands in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin (MLRYRB) have long been exploited to meet the increasing food and energy demands, especially in recent decades. However, how their landscapes and hydrological patterns changed over time was poorly qualified, which was crucial to conserving biodiversity and ecosystems. In this study, we proposed a new wetland classification procedure taking advantage of the shape, topography, landscape patterns, and phenology to map the distribution of six wetland types in the MLRYRB in 1990 and 2020 with Landsat images. The transitions among different wetland types and associated driving factors were examined. Artificial wetlands expanded by 3907.6 km2 while natural wetlands decreased by 423.2 km2, resulting in a net area increase of 3484.4 km2. Farmland reclamations, aquacultural activities, urban expansion, and dam constructions induced 70 % of the area's loss of natural wetlands. Meanwhile, spatiotemporal patterns in wetland inundation dynamics were determined with agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis. Widespread transitions from perennial water to seasonal wetlands were detected. Notably, 47.8 % of the natural wetlands experienced significant drying trends, and as a result, the mean yearly inundated periods for natural wetlands decreased from 303 days in 1990 to 272 days in 2020. Given the substantial structural alterations, wetland destruction was more severe than the area reflected. Our results suggested that category-based changes in wetland areas, inundation patterns, associated driving forces, and underlying ecological consequences should be comprehensively assessed to conduct scientific conservation and prevent "paper offsets." Terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) changes due to impervious surfaces significantly impact ecosystem services in watersheds. Understanding the asymmetric response of vegetation GPP to impervious surface expansion is essential for regional development planning and ecosystem management. However, the asymmetric response of vegetation GPP to the impacts of impervious surface expansion is unknown in different watersheds. This paper selected the Yellow River and Yangtze River basins as case studies. We characterized the overall change in GPP based on changes in impervious surface ratio (ISR), determined impervious surface expansion's direct and indirect impacts on GPP in the two watersheds, and further analyzed the asymmetric response of the compensatory effects of indirect influences on the impervious surface expansion in different watersheds. The results showed that: (1) The vegetation GPP decreased with increasing ISR in the Yangtze River Basin, while that in the Yellow River Basin first increased and then reduced. (2) The direct impacts of increased ISR reduced vegetation GPP, while the indirect impacts both had a growth-compensating effect. Growth compensation stabilized at approximately 0.40 and 0.30 in the Yellow and Yangtze River Basins. (3) When the ISR was 0.34–0.56, the growth compensation could offset the reduction of GPP due to direct impact and ensure that the background vegetation GPP was not damaged in the Yellow River Basin. In contrast, the background vegetation GPP was inevitably impaired with increased ISR in the Yangtze River Basin. Therefore, this study suggests that the ISR should be ensured to be between 0.34 and 0.56 to maximize the impervious surface of the Yellow River Basin without compromising the background vegetation GPP. While pursuing impervious surface expansion in the Yangtze River Basin, other programs should be sought to compensate for the loss to GPP. In view of the influence of the water conservancy project on the ecological environment along the coastal basin, this paper analyzes the characteristics of short-term runoff variation of the reservoir during and after the construction with the support vector machine. At the same time, a comprehensive evaluation system of the influence of the water conservancy project on the coastal basin is established to analyze the long-term influence of the the water conservancy project on the coastal basin. The conclusions are as follows: the support vector machine (SVM) can better simulate the situation of water passing in the coastal basin under complex conditions. During the construction of the dam, the water conservancy project has no significant influence on the runoff of this map in the Yangtze River basin, and the environment and monthly flow of the region are significantly affected within one year after the completion of the dam, which has obvious peak-cutting and valley-filling effect on the coastal basin and can suppress the emergence of floods. The long-term monitoring results of the project after its completion show that the ecological economy around the water conservancy project is mainly affected by the abundance of animals and plants and the distribution of groundwater, while the climate has less influence on the eco-economy. The water resources in the coastal basin are artificially controlled, which can effectively promote the local economic development. The power generation, farmland irrigation and water use in the upstream of the reservoir are satisfied, but the groundwater level is continuously lowered due to the continuous decrease of the water discharge in the lower reaches of the water conservancy project. This paper explored the drought propagation phenomenon based on meteorological, hydrological, and agricultural aspects in the Yangtze River basin (YRB), China. To evaluate meteorological, hydrological, and agricultural droughts, this paper used three drought indices, standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), standardized runoff index (SRI), and standardized soil moisture index (SSMI), respectively. The community land model (CLM) in the YRB to generate the monthly evapotranspiration, soil moisture, runoff data, which are required for the estimation of drought index, were applied. Different mean durations (6-and 12-month) were used for drought estimation, and propagations of meteorological to hydrological and meteorological and agricultural droughts were investigated for different durations as SPEI6-SRI6, SPEI6-SSMI6, SPEI12-SRI12, SPEI12-SSMI12. The average drought propagation between 1950 and 2010 presented the highest autocorrelation and correlation with one-month lags in four combinations of drought indices in SPEI6-SRI6, SPEI6-SSMI6, SPEI12-SRI12, and SPEI12-SSMI12. Additionally, this paper estimated the optimal lags of SPEI-SRI and SPEI-SSMI drought propagations using mean 6-and 12-month lag times for six representative drought periods. Numerous studies have divided industrial water use system into stages of industrial water use (IWU) and wastewater treatment (IWT) subsystems, named as the IWUWT system, yet scant studies have examined its dynamic recycling efficiency with non-discretionary variables. This paper proposes a dynamic two-stage recycling model with non-discretionary variables to compare and analyze the basin differences of the efficiency, and further reveal the driving forces of this efficiency in the Yangtze River basin and Yellow River basin. The results are as follows. (1) The average overall efficiency of the IWUWT system for the 30 provinces during 2011–2018 was 0.79 due to the bad performance of the IWT subsystem with an efficiency score of 0.74, especially for Yunnan and Guangxi. (2) The influence of economic policy uncertainty on circulating industrial water use is more significant in the south basin. (3) Economic development and water use intensity were the main drivers of IWUWT efficiency in the Yangtze River basin, while economic development and environmental consciousness were for the Yellow River basin. Droughts resulting from global warming severely hamper the healthy development of terrestrial vegetation ecosystems. This paper defines a terrestrial vegetation ecological drought index, i.e., the Standardized Water Supply–Demand Index (SSDI), based on the water balance method using the same calculation model as the SPEI. The theory of run is used to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of the drought characteristics in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB). The results show that (1) the drought events monitored by the SSDI were in good agreement with historical drought events, and the correlation coefficient between SSDI and NDVI (0.94) was significantly higher than that between SPEI and NDVI (0.88). (2) About 55.4% of the regions in the YRB experienced more than 13 droughts, and about 41.4% of the regions had an average drought duration of more than 3.1 months. In the northern part of the YRB, droughts tend to develop in a short-term high frequency, while in the southern part of the YRB, there is a long-term low-frequency development trend. Nearly 24.5% of the regions have an average drought intensity of more than 1.4, and most of them are located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. (3) Over the last 18 years, about 79.5% of the regions in the YRB showed an increasing trend in SSDI, of which 36.8% showed an increasing trend of more than 0.04/yr. In addition, 40.4% of the regions showed a significant upward trend. Environmental problems caused by intensive economic development and rapid urbanization have seriously constrained the sustainable development of social economy. Ecological security assessments have become an effective tool for measuring the unsustainability bottom line. Although Shanghai, Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Hefei, Chongqing, and Chengdu are developed megacities in the Yangtze River basin of China, they are located in a fragile ecological environment. The megacities of the Yangtze River basin must achieve sustainable development based on an appropriate assessment of ecological security so that suitable suggestions can be proposed. To quantitatively measure and analyze the ecological security levels in these eight megacities in 2007–2016, this study applied the improved emergy ecological footprint model which optimizes the traditional emergy ecological carrying capacity by adding the new account of the socioeconomic emergy ecological carrying capacity. To improve accuracy, the environmental technology investment efficiency in the socioeconomic account was introduced using the slack based measure model of undesirable output. Then, this study constructed a framework of ecological security assessment. The results showed that from 2007 to 2016, the renewable resources carrying capacity varied greatly among these eight megacities which had an absolute effect on the contribution of emergy ecological carrying capacity. Environmental technology investment efficiency failed to increase. However, in the short term, it effectively increased the socioeconomic carrying capacity for megacities with poor renewable resources. The emergy ecological footprint followed a growth trend in Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Hefei, and Chongqing, and a decreasing trend in Suzhou, Wuhan, and Chengdu. Across the study period, ecological deficits were identified in Shanghai, Suzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, and Hefei. Hangzhou, Chengdu, and Chongqing had ecological surplus because of their superior renewable resources and their ecological security. Nanjing and Wuhan changed their status from sub-secure to secure. Except for Shanghai, the ecological footprint diversity indexes of all other megacities followed a growth trend, indicating that their consumption structure improved. Finally, this paper provides policy recommendations to help decision-makers formulate ecological security and sustainable development strategies. This paper explored the projected changes in precipitation, maximum temperature (T max), and minimum temperature (T min) over the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) based on 23 Global climate models (GCMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6). The Empirical Quantile Mapping (EQM) approach was firstly applied to correct the biases in the GCMs. Next, the future changes were investigated by analyzing the multi-model ensemble (MME) of the bias-corrected dataset during 2025–2044 (near-term), 2045–2064 (mid-term), and 2081–2100 (long-term) periods, with reference to the baseline period 1995–2014, under three integrated scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5) of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) and the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). Results show that: (1) the biases in CMIP6 GCMs can be effectively corrected by EQM, and the MME performs better than individual models for each climatic variable. (2) Precipitation over the YRB from 2025 to 2100 is projected to increase at the rate of 9.66 mm/decade, 13.45 mm/decade, and 21.01 mm/decade under SSP1‐2.6, SSP2‐4.5, and SSP5‐8.5, respectively. In the long-term, the annual precipitation is projected to increase by 10.41%, 10.66% and 15.80%, under SSP1‐2.6, SSP2‐4.5 and SSP5‐8.5, respectively. (3) T max (T min) over the YRB is projected to increase by 0.09 (0.07) °C/decade, 0.29 (0.27) °C/decade, and 0.66 (0.64) °C/decade under SSP1‐2.6, SSP2‐4.5, and SSP5‐8.5, respectively. In the long-term, T max (T min) averaged over the YRB is projected to increase by 1.75 (1.50) °C, 2.72 (2.54) °C and 5.04 (4.85) °C under SSP1‐2.6, SSP2‐4.5 and SSP5‐8.5, respectively. (4) Uncertainties in the projected precipitation and temperature over the YRB were reduced based on MME. Abstract: This paper examines the spatial variation of sediment yield in the Yangtze basin in China, a large basin with complex geology, climate, land-use history, and extensive sediment monitoring. 287 stations with drainage area less than 10,000km2 were used to study the scale effects of sediment yield. In order to develop scale relations for regional sediment yield, the whole study area was divided into eight sub-basins. Relation between specific sediment yield and drainage basin area was built for each sub-basin. Regional scaling relation was analyzed based on landforms, geology, lithology and land-use of each sub-basin. Three regional trends were identified in relation to the drainage area: (1) a declining trend, due to soil erosion on heavily cultivated steep land and the storage of sediment in floodplains; (2) a flat trend, due to mass movement on the upper reach and heavy agricultural disturbance on the middle and lower reaches; and (3) an increasing trend, due to downstream recruitment of sediment from land downstream where slope farming and deforestation occurred. Using these developed relations, areally adjusted sediment yield maps were created over the entire Yangtze basin. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Active accumulated temperature is an important index of agricultural heat resources in a region. Based on the temperature data of the Yangtze River Basin from 1970 to 2014, this paper analyzed the characteristics of the temporal and spatial variations of the biological boundary temperature in the Yangtze River Basin. The main conclusions were drawn as follows: (1) since 1970, the accumulated temperature of ≥0 °C in the northern subtropical zone, mid-subtropical zone, and plateau climate zone showed overall increasing trends, and the trends were 122 (p < 0.001), 87.7 (p < 0.001), and 75.3 °C/10a (p < 0.001), respectively. The accumulated temperature of ≥5 °C showed an upward trend, and the change tendency rates were 122.6 (p < 0.001), 90.5 (p < 0.001), and 81.4 °C/10a (p < 0.001), respectively. The accumulated temperature of ≥10 °C showed overall increasing trends and the trends were 115.7 (p < 0.001), 92.5 (p < 0.001), and 78.9 °C/10a (p < 0.001). Accumulated temperatures of ≥0 °C, ≥5 °C, and ≥10 °C in the northern subtropical zone increased significantly higher than that in the mid-subtropical zone and plateau climate zone. (2) The accumulated temperatures of ≥0 °C, ≥5 °C, and ≥10 °C in the northern subtropical zone showed an abrupt change in 1997. In the mid-subtropical zone and plateau climate zone, there was an abrupt change in the accumulated temperatures of ≥0 °C and ≥5 °C in 1994, and in the northern subtropical zone, the abrupt change of the accumulated temperature ≥10 °C occurred in 1998. (3) There are obvious differences in the biological boundary temperature within the Yangtze River Basin, and the stations with large increases are mainly distributed in the middle and lower reaches, such as the Hanshui Basin, the Poyang Lake Basin, the Taihu Lake Basin, and the middle and lower reaches of the mainstream area. The initial day, final day, and continuous days showed a trend of advancement, postponement, and extension, respectively. Besides, the heat resources showed significant increasing trends, which is of guiding significance for the future production and development of agriculture in the region. With the increase of heat resources in the Yangtze River Basin, appropriate late-maturing varieties should be selected in variety breeding, to make full use of heat resources and improve the quality of agricultural products. Secondly, the planting system should be adjusted and the multiple cropping index improved to steadily increase agricultural output. Coupled human and natural system research is an urgent issue in the Anthropocene. However, this has not yet been conducted from the perspective of multiplex networks, which are a powerful tool to elucidate the interactions in human-natural systems. This paper establishes a framework of human-water multiplex networks (HWMNs) to explain the combined effects of human-water interactions in the Yangtze River basin. The spatial linkages and the status of each province in the Yangtze River basin can be characterized through the index of network flow and topology. Research demonstrated that the highest import flow of the virtual water environment capacity flow in the Yangtze River Basin is to Jiangsu Province, at 16.2 thousand t. The highest export flow in the Yangtze River Basin is from Shanghai city, at 33.2 thousand t. The control power of Shanghai city over Sichuan Province accounts for 56.59% of the water resources, which is the highest value and can be recognized as one type of telecoupling of water resources. The provinces in the delta of the Yangtze River basin, including Shanghai city, Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province, benefit the most from economic trade. The community structure of the virtual water environment capacity flow is highly consistent with the geographical distribution of the Yangtze River basin. Comprehensive research methods combined with network flow analysis and network topology analysis provide more general results. The microenvironmental effect of indirect pollutant discharge is uncovered through HWMNs. This research can provide a more connected view of integrated water management. Net Primary Productivity (NPP) is a basis of material and energy flows in terrestrial ecosystems, and it is also an important component in the research on carbon cycle and carbon budget. This paper evaluated the spatial distribution pattern and temporal change trends for forest NPP simulated by the LPJ (Lund-Potsdam-Jena) model and NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) in the Yangtze River basin from 1982 to 2013. The results revealed that: (1) the spatial distribution of the forest NPP and NDVI in the Yangtze River basin has gradually decreased from the southeast coast to the northwest. The forest NPP and NDVI in the mid-lower Yangtze were higher than that of the upper Yangtze; (2) the forest NPP and NDVI in most areas of the Yangtze River basin were positively correlated with the temperature and precipitation. Moreover, the correlations among the temperature with the forest NPP and NDVI were stronger than that of correlations among precipitation with forest NPP and NDVI. Moreover, the extreme drought event in the year of 2004–2005 led the NPP to decrease in the middle and lower Yangtze River basin; (3) human activity such as major ecological projects would have a certain impact on the NPP and NDVI. The increase in forest areas from 2000 to 2010 was larger than that from 1990 to 2000. Moreover, the increasing rate for the NDVI was higher than that of NPP, especially after the year 2000, which indicates that the major ecological projects might have great impacts on the vegetation dynamics. The use of remote sensing to monitor surface water bodies has gradually matured. Long-term serial water change analysis and floods monitoring are currently research hotspots of remote sensing hydrology. However, these studies are also faced with some problems, such as coarse temporal or spatial resolution of some remote sensing data. In general, flood monitoring requires high temporal resolution, and small-scale surface water extraction requires high spatial resolution. The machine learning method has been proven to be effective against long-term serial surface water extraction, such as random forests (RFs). MODIS data are well suited for large-scale surface water dynamic analysis and flood monitoring because of its short return cycle and medium spatial resolution. In this paper, the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) in China was selected as the study area, and two MODIS products (MOD09A1 and MOD13Q1) and RF method were used to extract the surface water from 2000 to 2016. Considering the disadvantages of temporal or spatial resolution of these two MODIS products, this study also presents a data fusion method to combine them and get higher spatiotemporal resolution water results. Finally, 762 surface water maps from 2000 to 2016 are obtained, whose temporal and spatial resolution is every eight days and 250 m, respectively. In addition, water extent variation is analyzed and compared to observed precipitation data. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) this constructed approach for long-term serial surface water extraction based on the RF classifier is feasible, and a good fusion method is used to obtain the surface water body with higher spatiotemporal resolution; (2) the maximum area of the surface water extent is 48.53 × 103 km2, and seasonal and permanent water areas are 20.51 × 103 km2 and 28.01 × 103 km2, respectively; (3) surface water area is increasing in the YRB, such that seasonal water area decreased by 3450 km2, and the permanent water area increased by 3565 km2 in 2001–2015; (4) precipitation is the main factor causing variation in the surface water bodies, and they both show an increasing trend in 2000–2016. As such, the approach is worth referring to other remote sensing applications, and these products are very both valuable for water resource management and flood monitoring in the study area.
