Rammed earth ruins can be regarded as a special soil mass made by humans. Generally, the stability of rammed earth ruins is largely controlled by the morphological characteristics of rammed layer interfaces (RLIs), which have not been well studied yet. In this paper, the Yongchang Section of the Ming Great Wall, a representative of rammed earth ruins in northwestern China, was selected as the study area, and morphological data from three typical RLIs were collected uisng a handheld 3D scanner. For each typical RLI, within three concentric analysis domains with different sizes, the spatial characteristics of microslopes were explored by ArcGIS, and the 3D roughness values along eight analysis directions were calculated. Ultimately, this study indicates that the most notable characteristic of RLIs is the morphological regularity provided by the rammed pits. Thus, within the analysis domains employed here, the spatial characteristics of microslopes and 3D roughness values are size-independent overall. Moreover, the distributions of 3D roughness are basically more isotropic than anisotropic. Additionally, minor bumps on the RLIs were formed by construction, fracturing, and weathering, and they contribute to the limited heterogeneity of the RLI morphology. Thereinto, the weathering-induced can further be divided into minor bumps caused by wind erosion and rainfall erosion. On the whole, RLIs that have undergone wind erosion have significantly higher surface hardness values (60–90 HA) than rainfall-eroded RLIs (< 50 HA). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Erosion diseases often appear on the upper part of the Great Wall of China. Low precipitation, intense solar radiation, and severe soil salinization occur in northwest China, and the migration of salt and damage can be described with respect to the rainfall-radiation cycle. Rainfall and radiation conditions were simulated in the laboratory, and reproduced samples were subjected to cyclic experiments to determine salt migration and the damage progress. Surface hardness and ultrasonic velocity were used to measure the surface damage, and the microstructure damage was determined by computed tomography and scanning electronic microscopy. The results show that under the rainfall-radiation cycle, most of the salt in the upper part, including sulfate, migrates to an area 2–3 cm from, while a small part of the salt, including chloride, moves down into the lower half of the sample. In areas where salt is concentrated, the soil density decreases, cracks develop, and a vulnerable zone appears, reducing the surface hardness and ultrasonic velocity. The concentration of salt causing destruction of the soil structure is the main factor leading to erosion of the upper walls of earthen sites. Infiltration of rainwater is required for the migration of soluble sulfate and the damage to soil on the upper wall. Background: There have been many studies on the relationship between circRNAs and fat deposition. Although the liver is a central organ for fat metabolism, there are few reports on the relationship between circRNAs in the liver and fat deposition. Methods: In this study, we systematically analyzed circular RNAs in the liver of Ningxiang pigs, at four time points after birth (30 days, 90 days, 150 days and 210 days). Results: A total of 3705 circRNAs were coexpressed in four time periods were found, and KEGG analysis showed that the significantly upregulated pathways were mainly enriched in lipid metabolism and amino acid metabolism, while significantly downregulated pathways were mainly related to signal transduction, such as ECM–receptor interaction, MAPK signaling pathway, etc. Short time-series expression miner (STEM) analysis showed multiple model spectra that were significantly enriched over time in the liver. By constructing a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory network, 9187 pairs of networks related to the change in development time were screened. Conclusions: The expression profiles of circRNAs in Ningxiang pig liver were revealed at different development periods, and it was determined that there is differential coexpression. Through enrichment analysis of these circRNAs, it was revealed that host genes were involved in metabolism-related signaling pathways and fatty acid anabolism. Through STEM analysis, many circRNAs involved in fat metabolism, transport, and deposition pathways were screened, and the first circRNA–miRNA–mRNA regulation network map in Ningxiang pig liver was constructed. Having extremely high artistic, scientific and social values, earthen sites are widely distributed in China and are important human cultural relic resources. Due to accumulated natural erosions (from rain and wind) and human activities (destructive activities of human beings in history and modern times), however, earthen sites have been greatly damaged, and many sections have even been absent, so that they are seriously threatened by extinction. Under these circumstances, acquiring the conservation status of earthen sites is a vital prerequisite for the subsequent targeted protection. In this paper, as a world-renowned heritage site, the castles of the Ming Great Wall located in Qinghai Province were selected as the research object. A novel indicator, namely the linear absent section ratio (L-ASR), was proposed, and its value was classified into five levels to quantitatively characterize the specific conservation status of such sites, including excellent (E) (0–10%), good (G) (10–25%), fair (F) (25–50%), poor (P) (50–75%), and very poor (VP) (75–100%). Based on the assessment results, the castles with excellent status constituted the minimum proportion, while the castles with very poor status represented the largest percentage, reflecting the grave situation of earthen sites. Furthermore, by applying population distribution models to the linear fitting combined with the population density (PD), a positive correlation between PD and L-ASR was obtained to reveal the anthropogenic influence on the destruction of earthen sites. Principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized to provide a far richer understanding of which factors correlate most strongly with deterioration. This study provides a new thought to quantitatively characterize the preservation conditions of earthen sites and also indicates the effect of human activities on the damage of earthen sites from a population density perspective, which is potentially used for the analysis of more various types of architecture with different construction techniques. To clarify the sliding mechanism of a landslide, the shear behavior characteristics of slip zone soil are always vital. In the Northwest of China, thousands of landslides generally develop in three main types of slip zone soil, i.e., Quaternary loess, weathered Mesozoic-Cenozoic mudstone, and weathered Mesozoic-Paleozoic phyllite. In the present study, the shear behavior characteristics of these three kinds of slip zone soil were investigated through direct shear tests and their implications for the sliding mechanisms of landslide were also discussed. It was found that, in general, an abrupt failure of loess landslide could be related to the strong strain-softening behavior of loess in the direct shear test, while the ductile shear behavior of weathered mudstone and phyllite coincided with the creep deformation of the corresponding landslides. The residual friction angle of slip zone soil varied with the soil type and its mineral composition, and the lowest residual friction angle about 11.5° could be found in weathered phyllite (SET) with graphite. Compared with the previous research, it is interesting to find that the residual friction angles of mudstone and phyllite in the present study accorded reasonably with the empirical correlations proposed by Wen et al. Earthen sites with historical, scientific, social, cultural, and artistic values can be destroyed by weathering. Chemical consolidation is an effective method to protect earthen sites, and organic–inorganic composites are often considered ideal. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the effect of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with a high degree of alcoholysis on the expansion and cracking behaviour of quicklime-treated soil. The expansion and surface cracking behaviour of the composite soil were investigated with a Crack Image Analysis System. Changes inside the soil samples were observed and analysed by X-ray computed tomography and ImageJ. The results indicated that the expansion of quicklime-treated soil decreased with increasing PVA content, and the cracking behaviour on the surface was different from the inside of the samples. Surface cracks were significantly weakened when PVA was added to soil with a quicklime content ≤ 5%. As the quicklime content increased to 10% or more, the PVA transformed long and wide surface cracks into short and narrow cracks. The development of internal cracks was not as evident as those developing at the surface. Soil samples with 1.0% PVA had no obvious internal cracks at 0–25% lime content. Samples with 0.5% PVA content had internal cracks only when the quicklime content was ≥ 20%. A mechanism for the cracking phenomenon was proposed considering the results obtained from X-ray diffractometry. Soil particles were cemented together through physicochemical reactions with PVA, and these soil particles shared the expansion resulting from the hydration reaction of quicklime instead of through local expansion. Some of the largest and best-preserved Buddhist art treasure houses in the world, namely the Mogao Grottoes, are located at the northwest edge of the region of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau and are adjacent to the Altun and Qilian mountains, where the geotectonic activity is intense and large earthquakes have occurred. Future earthquakes are one of the major threats to the caves of the Mogao Grottoes; therefore, it is important that their dynamic performance is studied when an earthquake occurs. To understand the dynamic performance of the densely distributed caves under the effect of earthquakes, as well as the long-term stability of the Mogao Grottoes, the stress distribution, deformation characteristics, and peak-acceleration amplification factor were analysed under rare-earthquake conditions using a finite-difference element. The numerical study revealed that the most dangerous state of the caves is the initial time when an earthquake occurs. The obvious tensile stress concentration appeared at the top and the bottom of the caves of the middle floor; the main damage was caused by the shear failure towards the direction of the free face and not by the tensile failure. A large permanent horizontal displacement of the caves occurred after an earthquake, mostly at the densely distributed caves of the middle floor. The acceleration amplification effect of the middle-floor caves was significant; the Fourier amplitudes of the acceleration (which were monitored in all caves) were significantly magnified at the frequencies of 3 ~ 4 Hz and 7 ~ 9 Hz, whereas the Fourier amplitudes of the acceleration which were monitored in the middle-floor caves were almost amplified within the entire frequency range. Although the maximum stress was within the allowed limit and no tensile failure occurred, great permanent inhomogeneous horizontal displacements and large accelerations could have a negative effect on the stability of caves and the preservation of wall paintings. The Green-Ampt (GA) model has been widely used to evaluate soil water infiltration. While a simple piston profile is commonly used, the wetting profile of a soil changes during infiltration and a quarter-ellipse has been found to better describe its evolution. This study aims to improve the GA model and discuss the model parameters when the quarter-ellipse profile is utilized. The soil column is divided into three zones: saturated, transient and dry. The variable γ is introduced to express the ratio of the saturated zone depth to the wetting front depth. A modified GA model is derived via mathematical methods, but an exact solution is difficult to obtain. Therefore, a simplified (SGA) model is developed via a segmented method. Compared with the measured results, the SGA model is more accurate than the traditional model. Finally, the model parameters are discussed and a value of γ = 0.5 is recommended. The Subashi Buddhist Temple Ruins, which contain a lot of coarse-grained soils, have been severely damaged by surface weathering. Modified polyvinyl alcohol (SH) which can improve the mechanical properties of fine-grained earthen ruins has never been reported in the protection of coarse-grained earthen ruins, and thus, it is of great practical significance to investigate the impregnation and consolidation effects of SH solution on coarse-grained soils. First, the characteristic changes obtained by SH impregnation with respect to consolidation radius, impregnation rate, impregnation time, and cumulative impregnation were analysed for soil specimens with different dry densities and grain gradations. Then, disintegration, drying–wetting cycle, and freeze–thaw cycle experiments were carried out, and the results of these experiments were analysed. Finally, the impregnation and consolidation effects of the SH solution were evaluated together. The feasibility of protecting the Subashi Buddhist Temple Ruins with SH by impregnation was studied, and it is suggested that the methods of surface spraying and borehole impregnation for anti-weathering should be combined to protect these ruins. Numerous ancient sandstone grottoes remain in northwest and central China, and weathering issues have significantly influenced their preservation conditions. The dramatic naturally cyclic changes in water content and temperature in the environment have been considered to be the main drivers of the physical weathering that commonly occurs at these archaeological sites. Therefore, comparing and understanding the behaviors of sandstone with different weathering degrees under variable environmental conditions would be helpful for further study on predicting the type, location and extent of deterioration of sandstone relics in a small region (such as the surrounding rock of grottoes). This study examines Cretaceous sandstones with two weathering degrees from Bingling Temple Grottoes, China. Standard thin section photomicrographs provide petrographic and mineralogical data and show that the sandstones have identical lithologies. Three types of specifically designed frost weathering tests are then conducted on the samples. After every six weathering cycles, the weathering processes are suspended, and the corresponding parameters, such as dry weight loss, dry density, effective porosity, porosity, P wave velocity, surface hardness and drilling resistance, are measured. At the end of the weathering cycles, the sample variations in grain size distributions are compared, and statistical tests are performed to show the statistical significance of the results. The results indicate that similar deterioration patterns occur on the samples with two weathering degrees under the same weathering tests. The increase in effective porosity surpasses that of the porosity only when the weathering effect is large enough. Furthermore, sandstone with a high degree of weathering might be more susceptible to changes in the internal pores due to its greater initial interconnectivity. In an open system, physical weathering (frost–thaw and dry–wet cycles) would cause the superficial grain size distributions of different rocks to become relatively uniform. Finally, when exposed to the same weathering process, the decreases in the overall mechanical strength in the two sandstones do not differ significantly, but the loss of superficial strength may be different. Water-salt migration is an important reason for the development of basal erosion which seriously threatens the conservation of earthen sites. Studies in cutting-off or redirection of the water-salt migration path become vital. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite soil with extreme hydrophobicity shows the potential as the cushion layer with the damp-proof function, but the feasibility of preventing basal erosion based on the PVA cushion layer still lacks verification. In this study, for the embedded and non-embedded PVA cushion layers, water-salt distribution and morphology of earthen wall after repeated injection of salt solution were compared. The results showed that PVA cushion layer changed the water-salt migration path and promoted the accumulation of soluble salt on the ground outside the wall rather than the bottom of cushion layer, which effectively prevented basal erosion. A numerical model based on HYDRUS-2D confirmed that a partial laying of hydrophobic cushion layer under the wall cannot effectively prevent the water-salt migration, and a full laying of cushion layer should be adopted to prevent basal erosion. The cushion layer was recommended to extend towards the direction of the earthen wall instead of towards the sides, which also resisted the destructive effects of sand-driving wind and runoff erosion. • Basal erosion caused by water-salt migration is directly confirmed. • Water-salt distribution for models with/without PVA cushion layer is explored. • PVA cushion layer can inhibit basal erosion. • Reasonable laying modes of the hydrophobic cushion layer is presented. Grottoes are widely distributed along the ancient Silk Road in Northwest China, and wall paintings are among the most precious cultural relics in these grottoes. On-site investigation of some grottoes has revealed that these wall paintings are painted on earthen plaster and that most of them have a double-layer structure of plaster, i.e., a base coarse plaster layer (with wheat straw added) and a surface fine plaster layer (with hemp fibers added). Meanwhile, studies regarding the improvement in shrinkage and cracking behaviors via ancient plaster craftsmanship have been scarce. To investigate the specific effects of different material compositions on the shrinkage and cracking properties of plaster during desiccation, a series of laboratory shrinkage and cracking tests is conducted on plaster specimens composed of Dengban clay and quartz sand, vegetal fibers, and a potential restoration material (i.e., calcined ginger nut), respectively. The results show that adding sand and vegetal fibers can significantly increase the shrinkage limit of Dengban clay and inhibit its volume shrinkage and that vegetal fibers play an important role in the inhibition of surface cracking on plaster. Sand inhibits shrinkage by forming a skeleton in soil and reducing the formation of primary cracks. Fibers inhibit soil shrinkage by overcoming the suction between soil particles and preventing the formation of primary cracks. However, wheat straw cannot deform with the shrinkage of soil (e.g., hemp fibers); consequently, many subcracks appear around the wheat straw on the surface of coarse plaster. The soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) describes the relationship between matric suction and moisture of soil, the testing process of which is time-consuming. The test time of particle size distribution (PSD), in contrast, is relatively short. Thus, it is quite important to establish a proper model for PSD to forecast SWCC. This paper analyzed PSD of 25 groups of loess by way of laser diffraction technique (LD) and sieve-settlement method. Works were carried out on fitting analysis on PSD with Logarithmic model, Fredlund model, Jaky model, and Gompertz model. Statistical method was used to explain the fitting performance. Meanwhile, an empirical model was put forward. Compared to the four models, the empirical model has fewer parameters, simple model form, and smaller fluctuations of parameters. Results of LD showed higher clay content but lower silt content. It is suggested that Fredlund model or the empirical model be adopted to forecast SWCC of Malan loess. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Mogao Grottoes are among the most famous sites on the World Heritage list. Several large-scale preservation projects were implemented in 1962, 1982, and 2008, respectively, to improve their preservation conditions. According to field investigation and assessment in recent years, the cliff is stable on the whole because of the reinforcement projects. Among them, there are still 42 potentially dangerous bodies, which may not be stable in some conditions. For the purpose of building the monitoring and early warning system and the long-term preventive preservation of the Mogao Grottoes, an innovative analytical method based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy-AHP was applied to assess the hazard of potentially dangerous bodies within the cliff. Firstly, the hazard was classified into six groups: very high, high, moderate, low, very low, and no hazard, in this study. Secondly, the AHP method was applied to calculate the impact index of each causative factor, and then the hazard assessment of dangerous bodies was made based on statistical analysis. Finally, the Fuzzy-AHP method was applied to calculate the correlation of each factor and determine the comprehensive hazard class. The results indicate that Fuzzy-AHP seems to be more accurate than AHP in hazard assessment. Meanwhile, there is a very high risk body that can threaten 10 caves, three high risk bodies that can threaten 13 caves, and 15 moderate risk bodies can threaten 69 caves in total, while the remaining bodies are defined as low or very low grades. Overall, the results of this study provide much data and a theoretical model in the construction of a monitoring and early warning system currently. In the northwest of China, many loess landslides have occurred without clear triggering factors (i.e., rainfall, earthquake, human activities, etc.). To better understand and analyze the hydro-mechanical properties of these slopes and then provide evidence for their stability analysis subjected to matric suction, it is essential to clarify the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC). In this study, we conducted a set of experimental trials to examine the influences of initial dry density, water content upon the SWCCs of a loess soil taken from a loess landslide area, by using a conventional volumetric pressure plate extractor. Two common SWCC models have been investigated to evaluate which one is better for loess soil. The suction stress characteristic curves (SSCCs) were also estimated and analyzed. We found that behaviors of SWCCs would be different when the matric suction was greater than a certain value. The two SWCC equations have approximately the same performance in describing the SWCC. The rates of desorption decrease and residual water content increases with increasing the initial dry density, while the initial dry density has little, if any, influence on the air-entry value (AEV). The specimen compacted under higher initial water content would exhibit a higher AEV value and residual water content but lower rate of desorption as compared with the lower initial water content. The magnitude of suction stress had an approximately linear relationship with matric suction before the AEV value, the SSCC shapes will be markedly varied with the initial dry density and water content. Owing to the advantages of cost-effectiveness, compactness, and the avoidance of complicated camera synchronization, single-camera three-dimensional (3D) digital image correlation (DIC) techniques have gained increasing attention for deformation measurement of materials and structures. In the traditional single-camera 3D-DIC system, the left and right view images can be recorded by a single camera using diffraction grating, a bi-prism, or a set of planar mirrors. To further improve the measurement accuracy of single-camera 3D-DIC, this paper introduces a single-camera four-view imaging technique by installing a pyramidal prism in front of the camera. The 3D reconstruction of the measured points before and after deformation is realized with eight governing equations induced by four views, and the strong geometric constraints of four views can help to improve the measurement accuracy. A static experiment, a rigid body translation experiment, and a four-point bending experiment show that the proposed single-camera 3D-DIC method can achieve higher measurement accuracy than the dual-view single-camera 3D-DIC techniques and that the single-camera 3D-DIC method has advantages in reducing both random error and systematic error. The filtered mass density function (FMDF) model has been employed for large-eddy simulations (LES) of compressible high-speed turbulent mixing and reacting flows. However, the mixing model remains a pressing challenge for FMDF methods, especially for compressible reactive flows. In this work, a temporal development mixing layer with two different convective Mach numbers, M c = 0.4 and M c = 0.8 , is used to investigate the mixing models. A simplified one-step reaction and a real hydrogen/air reaction are employed to study the mixing and turbulence-chemistry interaction. Two widely used mixing models, interaction by exchange with the mean (IEM) and Euclidean minimum spanning tree (EMST), are studied. Numerical results indicate that no difference is observed between the IEM and EMST models in simple reaction flows. However, for hydrogen/air reactions, the EMST model can predict the reaction more accurately in high-speed flow. For mixing models in compressible reactive flows, the requirement of localness preservation tends to be more essential as the convective Mach number increases. With the increase of compressibility, the sensitivity of the mixing model coefficient is reduced significantly. Therefore, the appropriate mixing model coefficient has a wider range. While the macroscopic mechanical properties of earthen-site soils have undergone extensive experimental and modeling studies, few research efforts focus on the relationship between the overall mechanical behavior and micro-pore structure. We developed a microstructure-based finite element model to investigate the influence of micro-pore structure on the macroscopic mechanical behavior of earthen-site soils. Scanning electron microscopy images of the untreated and consolidated soils were processed to compare the changes in equivalent diameter, sphericity, and porosity of the soils after consolidation. According to the pore parameter range of the untreated and consolidated soils, the effects of micro-pores on the soil behavior are specifically conducted under both static and dynamic loads. Although nondestructive ultrasonic technologies have been applied in laboratory and field tests in the field of heritage conservation, few studies have quantified the relationship among the real microstructures, micromechanical properties, and macroscopic acoustic responses of earthen-site soils. This paper develops a micromechanics-based multiscale model for quantitatively exploring the ultrasonic propagation characteristics of elastic waves in untreated and consolidated earthen-site soils. Scanning electron microscope images and image processing technology are integrated into the finite-element simulation. The effects of microstructure and wave features on the acoustic characteristics of soils are quantitatively investigated under pulsive loading. The simulation results of untreated and consolidated soils are efficiently compared to ultrasonic test data. It is demonstrated that the integration of microstructure image processing and multiscale modeling can predict the ultrasonic pulse velocity well, which improves the accuracy of laboratory testing and field monitoring and better serves the evaluation and implementation of engineering practice in the field of heritage conservation. In the study, a three-parameter model was presented to calculate the thermal conductivity at full range of degree of saturation ( S ) for fine-grained soils based on the Fredlund and Xing model and the normalized thermal conductivity method. Three parameters ( a , b , c ) of the new model are determined by two equations and a measured point at a certain S . Two equations were obtained by the correlations between the parameters a , b , c and the basic properties of 30 Canadian soils by regression analysis. Moreover, the relationship between the thermal conductivity and S at full range of S was defined as the thermal conductivity curve (TCC) and was divided into 3 regions for the improvement of the calculation result. According to the sensitivity analysis, it is found that the calculated TCC is the most reliable when a point is measured in the Region 2. In addition, the new calculation model was also verified by 6 Chinese soils, suggesting the new model could present a good calculation result ( R 2  = 0.97) for the TCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the study, a model matrix, based on the combinations of 1 thermal conductivity model for saturated soils ( λ sat ), 4 thermal conductivity models for dried soils ( λ dry ) and 4 Kersten number models for soils ( K e ), was proposed to calculate the thermal conductivity of soils. 16 calculation models were included in the matrix. The matrix could be used to investigate the effects of the λ dry models and K e models on the calculational results of the 16 calculation models for the thermal conductivity of soils. The matrix was evaluated by 40 Canadian soils, and it is found that the He et al. model for λ dry performs best among the 4 λ dry models, the Côté and Konrad model for K e performs best among the 4 K e models. It also shows that the results of the calculation models in the matrix are different significantly, but the JCM (combination of the geometric mean model for λ sat , the Johansen model for λ dry , and the Côté and Konrad model for K e ) performs best among the calculation models for the thermal conductivity of soils. The effects of the λ dry models and K e models on the calculational results of calculation models for the thermal conductivity were evaluated by the modified difference index (MDI), showing that the K e models have much larger effect on the calculational results than the λ dry models. A remarkable risk in the field of rock engineering is the natural exposure of low-grade metamorphic rock to the freeze-thaw process. Examples of such materials are slate and phyllite, which are employed approximately mountainous permafrost zones. In order to study the weathering processes and mechanisms in low-grade metamorphic rock following freeze-thaw weathering processes, the freeze-thaw cycles were applied. Accordingly to this process, low-grade metamorphic rock partially or completely deteriorates, and mechanical properties, microstructure, and mineral content changes are commonly associated with freeze-thaw processes. This study shows that, following numerous freeze-thaw cycles processes, the quality, wave velocity, and compressive strength of rock reduce; calcite, mica, feldspar, and pyrite contents decrease; and clay minerals and gypsum content increase. Furthermore, the study also demonstrated that the changes in quality, wave velocity, and compressive strength caused by weathering of the rock followed the sequence slate > phyllite. However, the mineral contents of slate and phyllite alter in the same way. Because of this increase in volume and subsequent F-T cycles, new cracks form on the surfaces of pores due to outward pressure, and a lot of water is absorbed by clay minerals. The amount of water increases once again due to freezing as the temperature falls below zero degrees Celsius. This course duplicates with cyclic temperature changes and causes deterioration of low-grade metamorphic rock materials. By analysis of an examination of the damage variables based on wave velocity, it is possible to conclude that mineral changes during the freeze-thaw effect may make for the formation of voids and the deterioration of metamorphic rock. Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is one of the common clinical neurological emergencies. Its incidence accounts for about 5–9% of cerebral stroke patients. Even surviving patients often suffer from severe adverse prognoses such as hemiplegia, aphasia, cognitive dysfunction and even death. Inflammatory response plays an important role during early nerve injury in SAH. Toll-like receptors (TLRs), pattern recognition receptors, are important components of the body's innate immune system, and they are usually activated by damage-associated molecular pattern molecules. Studies have shown that with TLR 4 as an essential member of the TLRs family, the inflammatory transduction pathway mediated by it plays a vital role in brain injury after SAH. After SAH occurrence, large amounts of blood enter the subarachnoid space. This can produce massive damage-associated molecular pattern molecules that bind to TLR4, which activates inflammatory response and causes early brain injury, thus resulting in serious adverse prognoses. The fatigue behavior of the 800H weld joint at the temperature of 800 °C was investigated, taking into account the effects of residual stress and microstructure. To model the residual stress in the welded joint, a finite element method was employed and its accuracy was verified using a hole drilling method, which was also used to study the evolution of residual stress during cutting and heating processes. Additionally, the weld region was characterized by measuring the distributions of elements and micro-hardness via energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Vickers hardness tester. Fatigue lives, curves of displacement versus the number of cycles were obtained, and the fracture morphology was analyzed. The results reveal that the calculated residual stress in the weld region agrees well with the experimental results, and the transverse residual stress reduces in magnitude due to cutting and heating. Element distribution and micro-hardness exhibit obvious variations from the base metal to the weld metal. The micro-hardness has a minor effect on residual stress but a significant impact on local stress amplitudes at the weld toe. Furthermore, fatigue fractures primarily occur at the weld toe when the maximum cyclic stress exceeds 200 MPa, while the fracture location varies within the middle weld metal under smaller loads. • The low cycle fatigue behavior of 800H weld joint at high temperature of 800 °C is investigated. • The fatigue life of the weld joint is significantly inferior to that of the base metal. • Variations in properties at the weld joint prominently influence the failure location and fatigue life at the weld toe. • The distinction between the low and high fatigue regimes depends on the failure mechanism rather than the number of cycles. COF LZU-1 has the characteristics of a porous structure, a large specific surface area, and good chemical stability. In recent decades, extensive research has been conducted on its use as a nanomaterial for drug loading and separation. Here, we report a new corrosion inhibitor encapsulated nanostructure (LZU-1 @BTA). We synthesized LZU-1 via a hydrothermal method and loaded benzotriazole (BTA) corrosion inhibitor into LZU-1. The results show that loaded BTA can achieve effective pH-responsive release under acidic and alkaline conditions. The amino group present in the LZU-1 molecule can cross-link with epoxy resin, and its compatibility allows for good dispersion in epoxy resin without any further modification. The LZU-1 @BTA modified epoxy coating has shown remarkable anti-corrosion properties and excellent self-healing capabilities, which have been evaluated through various techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS), scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) and salt spray testing. The high-quality dispersion of LZU-1 @BTA in the resin, the high cross-linking density, and the pH-responsive release of BTA in the epoxy resin are some of the key factors that contribute to the excellent anti-corrosion performance of the epoxy resin composite coating. This research has opened up new possibilities for designing anti-corrosion coatings with significantly better corrosion resistance. Parkinson's disease (PD) decreases the quality of life of the affected individuals. The incidence of PD is expected to increase given the growing aging population. Motor symptoms associated with PD render the patients unable to self-care and function properly. Given that several drugs have been developed to control motor symptoms, highly sensitive scales for clinical evaluation of drug efficacy are needed. Among such scales, the objective and continuous evaluation of wearable devices is increasingly utilized by clinicians and patients. Several electronic technologies have revolutionized the clinical monitoring of PD development, especially its motor symptoms. Here, we review and discuss the recent advances in the development of wearable devices for bradykinesia, tremor, gait, and myotonia. Our aim is to capture the experiences of patients and clinicians, as well as expand our understanding on the application of wearable technology. Owing to man-made activities and natural conditions, the groundwater table experiences considerable changes in Lanzhou. Centrifugal model tests were performed to investigate the settlement of strip footings on loess subject to rising water table under different foundation pressures. The air-fall method was employed to reconstitute the artificial loess samples. The applicability of the air-fall prepared samples was evaluated against the parameters of the undisturbed loess samples obtained from the same location. The results of centrifuge tests reveal that the footing settlement increases significantly with increasing foundation loading pressure or increasing rising water table. However, the rate of increase in ultimate footing settlement under combined rising water level and footing pressure is established to be more intriguing. A simplified method for predicting the ultimate footing settlement on collapsible loess due to rising water table height is proposed. The proposed formulation is verified, as there is a good agreement between the test results under various loading pressures and rising water heights and the predicted ultimate footing settlements. A discussion on the ultimate settlement of strip footings subjected to rising water table against conventional bearing capacity safety factors is presented to provide some basis for the foundation design consideration under rising water scenario. Coastal loess is a special loess deposit that is distributed around the Bohai Sea. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the physical index, mineralogical characteristics and collapse potential of coastal loess. The secondary objective was to survey the effect of fine silt particles (particle size 5–10 μm, 6.64–7.64φ) on the collapse process. We tested the specific gravity, moisture content, dry density, Atterberg limits, grain size distribution, mineralogy, and collapsibility characteristics in a laboratory; generated scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images; and performed Mercury intrusion porosometry (MIP) tests. The results of this investigation indicated that coastal loess has a moderately severe collapse potential. The collapsibility coefficient decreases with an increase in the initial water content; it initially increases and then decreases with an increase in vertical pressure. As revealed by the MIP test, the collapse produces a smaller porosity, and the middle pores are primarily responsible for the collapse. The relationship of the collapsibility coefficient and particles with a diameter < 10 μm reveals that fine silt particles (particle size 5–10 μm, 6.64–7.64φ) and clay particles (particle size < 5 μm, >7.64φ) have the same tendency in terms of their effect on collapse. The mechanism of dissolving acoustic source of Q235B corrosion anode metal is the basis of acoustic emission (AE) source identification and corrosion site evaluation and analysis. In this paper, the local mechanical energy release and the characteristics of radiated elastic wave pulse in the process of metal dissolution are analyzed by using the principles of corrosion dynamics, damage thermodynamic energy conversion, local mechanical energy release and radiation elastic wave pulse characteristics of metal dissolving process, and the theoretical analysis is verified by atomic first numerical method. Combined with AE and electrochemical testing technology, the mechanism of Q235B steel corrosion acoustic source is studied experimentally. The characteristics of the metal dissolved acoustic source are obtained, and the energy conversion value of anode metal in the process of dissolution is extracted. The quantitative characterization formula of the corrosion behavior of the AE is established, which provides a basis for the assessment of the severity of the corrosion state of Q235B steel. • Under the action of electrochemical driving force, the breakage of crystal bonds triggered by the metal atoms leaving the lattice and the jumping mechanical motion of metal atoms in the phase boundary region are accompanied by the radiation of elastic wave pulses, forming the AE source. • The numerical results of the energy released by atoms during corrosion are obtained using atomic first nature numerical calculations. To verify the applicability and superiority of the compressible filtered mass density function method in real supersonic mixing flows, a classical experimental subsonic-supersonic spatial mixing layer is numerically investigated. In the present method, a transport equation for the scalar filtered mass density function is solved using the Lagrangian particle solver, while the filtered mass, momentum, and energy equations are fully coupled and solved by the large eddy simulation finite difference solver. First, a parametric study of the mixing model constant controlling the scalar mixing rate is conducted in the two-dimensional case. It is found that the mixing model constant has a significant effect on the root mean square profile of the mixture fraction. The appropriate mixing model constant for this supersonic mixing layer is given by comparing the root mean square results under three different mixing model constants. These results also show that the suitable mixing model constant used in compressible flows is much larger than that used in incompressible flows. Second, three-dimensional simulations are performed to verify the current method. For comparison, a traditional large eddy simulation with the gradient diffusion model is also conducted. The results show that the scalar mixing is better predicted by the filtered mass density function method than the gradient diffusion model. In particular, the mean and root mean square mixture fraction computed by the present method are in excellent agreement with the experimental data whereas the gradient diffusion model overestimates the peak root mean square mixture fraction by about 45%. Two scale-model tests were separately conducted in standard Toyoura sand with relative density of 50% and 80%. The effect of sand relative density on pile-soil interaction was investigated through the response of a laterally loaded pile and the sand movement around the pile. At a displacement of 3.6 mm of the loading point, the applied loads in loose and dense sand were 4.775 N and 21.025 N, respectively, and the maximum moment and soil resistance of the pile in dense sand were over 4 times those in loose sand. However, the deflection of the pile in dense sand was less than that in loose sand; additionally, the depth of zero deflection in dense sand was also less than that in loose sand. At the same time, the maximum displacements of loose sand in the vertical profile and ground surface were over 1.5 times those of dense sand. These characteristics occurred because the relative stiffness ratio of soil and pile increased as the relative density increased, which caused the behavior of the pile in dense sand to be elastic rather than rigid. Abstract: A series of ring-shear tests was conducted on saturated loess to investigate the effects of NaCl concentration in pore water and desalinization on the shear behavior under undrained conditions. The loess samples were taken from the ground surface of a frequently active landslide in China, were saturated by de-aired, distilled water with different concentrations of NaCl, and then were sheared undrained. After that, the samples were retrieved, remolded, re-set into the shear box, and re-saturated by passing through de-aired, distilled water such that the samples were desalinized, and then were sheared undrained again. Through comparing the undrained shear behavior, the effects of NaCl in the pore-water and desalinization on the undrained shear behavior of loess were examined. The results showed that the variation of NaCl concentration in pore water can strongly affect the shear behavior of saturated loess. Both the peak shear strength and steady-state strength increased with increase of NaCl concentration until a certain value, after which they decreased with further increase of NaCl concentration. Meanwhile, the peak shear strength and steady-state strength of the desalinized samples recovered to those of the original sample; hence, the effects of salinization are reversible. These findings may be of practical importance to better understand the repeated occurrence of some irrigation-induced loess landslides in China. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
