Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) show enormous potential as a large-scale energy storage technique. However, the growth of Zn dendrites and serious side reactions occurring at the Zn anode hinder the practical application of AZIBs. For the first time, we reported a fluorine-containing surfactant, i.e., potassium perfluoro-1-butanesulfonate (PPFBS), as an additive to the 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte. Benefitting from its hydrophilic sulfonate anion and hydrophobic long fluorocarbon chain, PPFBS can promote the uniform distribution of Zn2+ flux at the anode/electrolyte interface, allowing the Zn/Zn cell to cycle for 2200 h. Furthermore, PPFBS could inhibit side reactions due to the existence of the perfluorobutyl sulfonate (C4F9SO3−) adsorption layer and the presence of C4F9SO3− in the solvation structure of Zn2+. The former can reduce the amount of H2O molecules and SO42− in contact with the Zn anode and C4F9SO3− entering the Zn2+-solvation structure by replacing SO42−. The Zn/Cu cell exhibits a superior average CE of 99.47% over 500 cycles. When coupled with the V2O5 cathode, the full cell shows impressive cycle stability. Recent individual studies have indicated that ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption may be associated with the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis based on those longitudinal studies evaluating the relationship between UPF consumption and the risk of incident CKD, and synthesizing the results. PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from inception through 22 March 2023. Any longitudinal studies evaluating the relationship between UPF consumption and the risk of incident CKD were included. Two researchers independently conducted the literature screening and data extraction. RR and its 95% CI were regarded as the effect size. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) was applied to assess the quality of the studies included, and the effect of UPF consumption on the risk of incident CKD was analyzed with STATA version 15.1. This study's protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023411951). Four cohort studies with a total of 219,132 participants were included after screening. The results of the meta-analysis suggested that the highest UPF intake was associated with an increased risk of incident CKD (RR = 1.25; 95% CI: 1.18–1.33). High-dose UPF intake was associated with an increased risk of incident CKD. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (A-MSCs) are promising cellular therapies for the treatment of immune-mediated diseases. Non-gene editing technologies can improve the immune regulatory function of A-MSCs. Our preliminary experiments revealed that an active form of vitamin B6—pyridoxal-5′-phosphate (PLP)—plays an important role in regulating gene expression and cytokine secretion in A-MSCs in vivo. To further clarify the effect of PLP on receptors and cytokines related to the immune regulatory function of A-MSCs, a series of experiments were designed to verify the relationships between PLP and A-MSCs in vitro. Initially, A-MSCs were obtained, and cytokine secretion and the expression of IDO1, NF-κB, and Toll-like receptors in PLP-stimulated A-MSCs were evaluated. In addition, coculture was used to detect A-MSCs-mediated apoptosis of CD3+CD8+ T lymphocytes. These results showed that A-MSCs stimulated with PLP were highly proliferative, consistent with their pluripotent capacity. Further, the surface receptors TLR3, TLR4, IDO1, and NF-κB were upregulated, while TLR6 was downregulated. Concurrently, A-MSCs preconditioned with PLP had the greatest inhibitory effect on CD3+CD8+ T lymphocyte proliferation, indicating that PLP altered the immune regulatory function of A-MSCs through the regulation of TLRs and IDO1 expression. It has been controversial whether ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA) are separate or different phases of radiographic progression. We determined that serum calprotectin level (ng/ml) was higher in AS (15.30 ± 6.49) and nr-axSpA (17.76 ± 8.59) patients than in healthy individuals (7.40 ± 2.67). No difference was observed in calprotectin level between these two groups. Elevated calprotectin was positively correlated with ESR, CRP, BASDAI, and ASDAS as well as SPARCC scoring and had no correlation with BASFI and mSASSS. No correlation was observed between calprotectin and Wnt/β-catenin pathway markers. Serum calprotectin can be used as a marker for inflammation in both nr-axSpA and AS, while it does not contribute to the discrimination of AS and nr-axSpA. Calprotectin-mediated inflammation was not correlated with principle effectors of Wnt/β-catenin pathway, indicating that inflammation and bone fusion might be separate processes of the disease. Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis and anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) disease are two separate diseases, while sometimes they can coexist together. The exact mechanisms are not clear, but due to the rapid progression and poor prognosis, prompt and aggressive treatment is usually required. We treated with steroids combined with cyclophosphamide and rituximab an 84-year-old man with ANCA-associated vasculitis and anti-GBM disease who had prior pulmonary fibrosis and a coexisting anterosuperior mediastinal mass. Conventional therapy including steroids, plasmapheresis and cyclophosphamide failed to attenuate the anti-GBM disease, yet he responded to an alternative treatment of rituximab. This case suggests the efficacy of steroids and immunosuppressant for the treatment of a dual-positive case with an anterosuperior mediastinal mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS; MIM 106300) is a common rheumatic disease with strong genetic components affecting approximately 0.3% of the population. The exact genetic mechanism of AS remains elusive. Our previous study showed that AS could be transmitted in an autosomal dominant inheritance mode and a 6-cM candidate region located on the chromosome 2q36.1-36.3 was mapped in a Chinese family. Mutation screening was conducted within the candidate region in the family and other AS by sequencing, and the novel mutation will be further validated in other AS families, sporadic cases and healthy controls by mass spectrometry. We identified a rare non-synonymous mutation (Arg580Gly) in insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1) co-segregated with disease phenotype in patients of the family, which was not found in other AS families, sporadic patients and healthy controls. In the study, we found a rare non-synonymous mutation in IRS1 co-segregation in one Chinese family with AS, which indicated a new candidate disease causative gene for AS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of annealing temperature on microstructure and mechanical properties of a cold-rolled Al–10Mg alloy has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and tensile testing. The results showed that supersaturated Mg precipitated along grain boundaries and deformation bands during annealing treatment and precipitation size and the concentration of solid solution Mg atoms increased with the rising of annealing temperature. When annealed at low temperature, accumulation and annihilation of dislocations were the primary way of recovery; as temperature increased to 300 °C, recrystallized grains were formed around the large size β phase through particle-stimulated nucleation. A high ultimate strength (550 MPa) and a middle ductility (14%) were obtained when the Al–10Mg alloy was annealed at 200 °C for 1 h. The abnormal decrease of elongation when the Al–10Mg alloy was annealed at 250–300 °C was due to the formation of a continuous network distribution of large size β phase particles along grain boundaries. Background: Aging and immune infiltration have essential role in the physiopathological mechanisms of diabetic nephropathy (DN), but their relationship has not been systematically elucidated. We identified aging-related characteristic genes in DN and explored their immune landscape., Methods: Four datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database were screened for exploration and validation. Functional and pathway analysis was performed using Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA). Characteristic genes were obtained using a combination of Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine Recursive Feature Elimination (SVM-RFE) algorithm. We evaluated and validated the diagnostic performance of the characteristic genes using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and the expression pattern of the characteristic genes was evaluated and validated. Single-Sample Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (ssGSEA) was adopted to assess immune cell infiltration in samples. Based on the TarBase database and the JASPAR repository, potential microRNAs and transcription factors were predicted to further elucidate the molecular regulatory mechanisms of the characteristic genes., Results: A total of 14 differentially expressed genes related to aging were obtained, of which 10 were up-regulated and 4 were down-regulated. Models were constructed by the RF and SVM-RFE algorithms, contracted to three signature genes: EGF-containing fibulin-like extracellular matrix (EFEMP1), Growth hormone receptor (GHR), and Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA). The three genes showed good efficacy in three tested cohorts and consistent expression patterns in the glomerular test cohorts. Introduction: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterised by new bone formation, and Dickkopf homologue 1 (Dkk-1) may contribute to the ankylosis of the sacroiliac joint as a main regulator of the Wingless (Wnt) pathway. Increasing evidence shows that microRNAs targeting Dkk-1 might play a critical role in the pathogenesis of rheumatic diseases. We aim to investigate alterations in expression of miRNAs targeting Dkk-1 in AS patients in this study., Material and Methods: The peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of 20 AS patients and 20 normal controls were collected in our study. Three miRNAs targeting DKK1 including miR-29a, miR-335, and miR-363 were selected and quantitative real-time PCR was used to identify the expression of the three miRNAs in these samples. Correlation analysis was conducted between altered miRNA expression and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Function Index (BASFI), and mSASSS (modified Stoke Ankylosing Spondylitis Spinal Score)., Results: The expression of miR-29a was significantly higher in AS patients than in healthy controls (p < 0.01), while no significance was observed in the expression of miR-335 and miR-363 between AS patients and healthy controls (p > 0.05). No correlation was observed between miR-29a and ESR, CRP, BASDAI, and BASFI (p > 0.05). Objectives: This study aims to determine the levels of bone turnover markers in canonical wingless pathway in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and the correlation with disease activity indexes., Patients and Methods: We recruited a total of 43 AS patients (34 males, 8 females; mean age 36.8±9.3 years; range 22 to 62 years) and age- and sex-matched 42 healthy controls (32 males, 10 females; mean age 36.1±9.7; range 24 to 59 years). Serum levels of components of canonical wingless pathway including Dickkopf-1, glycogen synthase kinase-3β, β-catenin, alkaline phosphatase, and osteocalcin were detected using enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay method. All patients were assessed in terms of erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index, Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score, and the modified Stoke's Ankylosing Spondylitis Spine Score. Pearson's correlation test was used to analyze the correlation between serum bone turnover markers and clinical assessment indexes., Results: No significant difference was observed between AS patients and healthy controls for the levels of glycogen synthase kinase-3β, β-catenin, alkaline phosphatase, and osteocalcin, respectively (p>0.05). The level of Dickkopf-1 was significantly higher in AS patients (1914.5±407.8 pg/mL) than in healthy controls (1729.1±352.9 pg/mL) (p<0.05). There was no correlation between high Dickkopf-1 level and any of the clinical parameters contributing to inflammation or bone formation. However, the correlation between osteocalcin and disease duration was significant in AS patients (r=0.323, p=0.034)., Conclusion: Alteration of bone turnover markers in canonical wingless pathway was observed in AS. Aim of the Study: To investigate the role of 8 cytokines and their correlation with clinical characteristics in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in Han Chinese population by detecting their serum levels using the multiplex fluorescent microsphere method., Material and Methods: Serum was separated from 79 patients with SLE and 40 healthy controls. The serum cytokine detection was conducted according to the instruction of MILLIPLEX MAP human cytokine detection kit on the Luminex liquid phase array platform with 0.01 pg/ml detectable level. The 8 cytokines were interferon α2 (IFN-α2), IFN-γ, interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-8, IL-10, IFN-γ-inducible protein 10 (IP-10), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and IL-17. Variable data were in skewed distribution and were expressed with median (P25, P75). Mann-Whitney analysis was used in statistical analysis., Results: At the baseline level without any stimulus, the level of IP-10 expression was the highest among the 8 cytokines and the second highest was IL-8. The level of IL-17 was too low to be detected. The level of 7 cytokines was higher in SLE patients than in healthy controls (p < 0.01). The level of dsDNA antibody, C3, CRP, ESR and anti-nucleosome antibody was correlated with IL-10. Proteinuria was not correlated with any cytokine., Conclusions: Eight cytokines were measured in our study, while not all of them were detected. The most important finding was the usefulness of IL-10 as a disease activity biomarker for Han Chinese patient with SLE. None of cytokines reflected kidney injury.
