MEXT-Supported Program for the Strategic Research Foundation at Private Universities (2014-2018), Forming a Social Well-being Research Consortium in Asia, Subjective information has recently made a remarkable breakthrough into quantitative data collection and analysis in demography. Seen as a complement to hard statistics, the new perspective it opens seems promising. In the study of life-event histories, pioneering sociologists have developed the qualitative analysis of turning-points based on qualitative life-course narratives; we here present quantitative surveys which recorded factual individual life-event histories together with perceptions of subjective well-being, self-rated health indicators and financial situation over the life course. The interest of this approach is to explore variations in the subjective indicators along individual life courses rather than their absolute level at any point in time; and to confront facts and perceptions in order to better grasp the interpretation of social, familial, health transitions that take place along the life course. We here present how demographers collect such data and how they validate the subjective information against factual data. Some examples of the analysis of individual histories of subjective well-being are then presented and discussed.

Thailand is one of the Asian countries hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Before the widespread implementation, beginning in 1999, of programmes to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, many children were born with HIV in Thailand. They now reach adolescence thanks to antiretroviral treatments. While some qualitative studies have documented the family situation and the living conditions of these adolescents, the TEEWA (Teens Living With ARV) project has, for the first time, conducted a national quantitative survey among 10% of adolescents aged 12-19 infected with HIV at birth, under antiretroviral treatment, in order to assess their situation and compare it with that of adolescents in the general population. This article presents an original survey approach that takes into account the methodological and ethical issues specific to the situation of a population rendered doubly vulnerable by age and HIV.

Six à sept ans après leur arrivée en France, la moitié des migrants d’Afrique subsaharienne n’ont toujours pas les rois éléments d’installation que sont un titre de séjour d’au moins un an, un logement personnel, et un travail. Au bout de onze à douze ans, c’est encore le cas d’un quart d’entre eux. Cette longue période de précarité après l’arrivée en France tient plus aux conditions d’accueil (longueur du processus de régularisation, marché du travail segmenté, discriminations) qu’aux caractéristiques individuelles des arrivants. La situation des migrants subsahariens finit par se stabiliser, mais pour beaucoup d’entre eux, c’est au prix du passage par une longue période d’insécurité.

Eleven per cent of adults living in France in 2011 live in two or more residences. The phenomenon is particularly widespread among young adults - 26% of 18-19 year olds are concerned - who live in two residences for family and educational reasons. The second home is most frequently used on weekends and holidays. Only 9% to 10% of working adults live in more than one residence. The second dwelling is mainly used for holidays and leisure, especially after age 60 (when retirement increases free time), for those with the physical health and financial resources to maintain a second home. Among French adults, having two residences is most frequent among Île-de-France retirees and students from Brittany and Auvergne.

International audience; This paper covers the topic of data collection and how to deal with respondent’s perceptions, both in general and in relation of their life-event history in particular. This key question is central to the analysis of fuzzy states. This chapter presents the question of subjectivity, comparing facts with perception, focusing on retrospective interpretation true several example: working career, marital processes, parental universe, household head status and gender, measuring perceptions in economics, from subjective poverty to subjective well-being. These examples shoe how integrating perceptions and qualitative explorations improve and help statistical categorisation.
