The lightning clustering algorithm for spaceborne lightning observations clusters events into flash products and plays a crucial role in lightning-related research. This paper modified the lightning clustering algorithm based on the routine algorithm of Lightning Mapping Imager (LMI) and applied it to lightning events recorded by the LMI in 2019 to study the flash duration and flash area and specially to reveal the extreme lightning. To reveal the temporal and spatial features of lightning, the MCA (modified cluster algorithm) flash products defined flash duration and flash area. The results showed that continental regions have higher lightning frequencies but smaller events per flash, flash durations and flash areas than the ocean. The Tibetan Plateau has a low lightning frequency and smaller flash duration and area than eastern China. The flash count, events per flash, flash duration and flash area are higher during nighttime than during daytime. The relationship between flash duration and flash area showed distinct regional differences. In the MCA flash product, about 0.6% (0.1%) flashes have duration (area) that exceeds 1.0 s (5,000 km2). Finally, we analyzed two extreme lightning cases in eastern China, where the longest flash duration was 4.748 s and the largest flash area was 17,100 km2. This research contributes to advancing our understanding in the features of space-based lightning in the Eastern Hemisphere and applications to convection study. • Clustering algorithm was modified to study lightning with extreme duration and area. • Lightning duration and area both implied regional differences. • Quantitative relationship of duration and area was established in different regions. • The longest flash duration/largest flash area was 4.75 s/17100 km2 in eastern China. The surface displacement by seasonally freezing bulge and thawing subsidence are the main hazards for engineering construction in permafrost regions, especially for the Qinghai-Tibet railway. One of the main problems is how to monitor the frozen ground's displacement in the process of construction and protection of the Qinghai-Tibetan railway. The technology of Permanent Scatterers (PS) has been successfully used to detect the long-term subsidence at urban areas. For detecting the subsidence of the frozen earth on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, this paper extended the capability of the technology of PS to investigate deformation phenomena in vegetated area. The paper analyses an interferometric phase model, and presents improved PS algorithms for separating different components in interferometric phase. The proposed technique is implemented using ENVISAT ASAR images to detect the deformation over permafrost region of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The results are in concordance with results provided by a traditional ground levelling, which encourages future development using the Permanent Scatterers method to analyse deformation of the frozen earth on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Abstract: Deciphering significant sedimentological processes from a set of sediment samples is an important step in reconstructing environmental changes. One approach going beyond classical methods is the unmixing of grain-size distributions. This paper presents a flexible end-member modelling algorithm that is based on eigenspace analysis and considers inherent uncertainties. It has been applied to the detrital grain-size components of lacustrine surface sediment samples of Lake Donggi Cona, Qinghai Province, China. It allows up to five grain-size end-members to be characterised and quantified in an optimal model. An end-member with a major mode in the clay domain accounts for 34% of variance within the grain-size data set. It may represent sedimentation of suspension load from linear and laminar runoff during heavy precipitation events in summer. Three end-members in the fine sand to medium silt domains make up 60% of lacustrine sedimentation. They may represent local to remote aeolian processes that peak in wintertime. A multimodal end-member explaining the remaining 6% of variance may represent further fluvial and littoral dynamics or random fluctuations and measurement errors. Several model runs of different scaling and numbers of end-members provided a suitable way to determine uncertainties inherent to the model. A comparison of 12 different model runs and their respective uncertainties yielded a distinct model of robust end-members. The clay and medium silt end-members are robust features of detrital sedimentation within Lake Donggi Cona. They alone explain 54.4% of total variance in the data. However, no spatial pattern or relation to water depth is found for any of the grain-size end-members. Thus, when past detrital sedimentation at Lake Donggi Cona is reconstructed, a special focus should be on the robust features attributed to aeolian and suspension-related sedimentation processes as well as on effective sediment mixing processes impeding a distinct correlation between grain size and spatial attributes. Further applications of the end-member modelling algorithm to other depositional environments are encouraged to demonstrate its universal applicability. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper evaluated the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) gross primary production (GPP) product (MOD17) by using estimated GPP from eddy-covariance flux measurements over an irrigated winter wheat and maize double-cropping field on the North China Plain in 2003–2004, and an alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau in 2002–2003. The mean annual GPP from MOD17 accounted for 1/2–2/3 of the surface estimated mean annual GPP for the alpine meadow, but only about 1/5–1/3 for the cropland. This underestimation was partly attributed to low estimates of leaf area index by a MODIS product (MOD15) because it is used to calculate absorbed photosynthetically active radiation in the MOD17 algorithm. The main reason is that the parameter maximum light use efficiency ( εmax) in the MOD17 algorithm was underestimated for the two biomes, especially for the cropland. Contrasted to the default, εmax was optimized using surface measurements. The optimized εmax for winter wheat, maize and meadow was 1.18, 1.81 and 0.73 g C/MJ, respectively. By using the surface measurements and optimized εmax , the MOD17 algorithm significantly improved the accuracy of GPP estimates. The optimum MOD17 algorithm explained about 82%, 68%, and 79% of GPP variance for winter wheat, maize, and meadow, respectively. These results suggest that it is necessary to adjust the MOD17 parameters for the estimation of cropland and meadow GPP, particularly over cropland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
