Herein, the challenge of accurately classifying the manufacturing origin of printing paper, including continent, country, and specific product, was addressed. One-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) models trained on infrared (IR) spectrum data acquired from printing paper samples were used for the task. The preprocessing of the IR spectra through a second-derivative transformation and the restriction of the spectral range to 1800 to 1200 cm-1 improved the classification performance of the model. The outcomes were highly promising. Models trained on second-derivative IR spectra in the 1800 to 1200-cm-1 range exhibited perfect classification for the manufacturing continent and country, with an impressive F1 score of 0.980 for product classification. Notably, the developed 1D CNN model outperformed traditional machine learning classifiers, such as support vector machines and feed-forward neural networks. In addition, the application of data point attribution enhanced the transparency of the decision-making process of the model, offering insights into the spectral patterns that affect classification. This study makes a considerable contribution to printing paper classification, with potential implications for accurate origin identification in various fields.

Quality assessment in industrial applications is often carried out through visual inspection, usually performed or supported by human domain experts. However, the manual visual inspection of processes and products is error-prone and expensive. It is therefore not surprising that the automation of visual inspection in manufacturing and maintenance is heavily researched and discussed. The use of artificial intelligence as an approach to visual inspection in industrial applications has been considered for decades. Recent successes, driven by advances in deep learning, present a possible paradigm shift and have the potential to facilitate automated visual inspection, even under complex environmental conditions. For this reason, we explore the question of to what extent deep learning is already being used in the field of automated visual inspection and which potential improvements to the state of the art could be realized utilizing concepts from academic research. By conducting an extensive review of the openly accessible literature, we provide an overview of proposed and in-use deep-learning models presented in recent years. Our survey consists of 196 open-access publications, of which 31.7% are manufacturing use cases and 68.3% are maintenance use cases. Furthermore, the survey also shows that the majority of the models currently in use are based on convolutional neural networks, the current de facto standard for image classification, object recognition, or object segmentation tasks. Nevertheless, we see the emergence of vision transformer models that seem to outperform convolutional neural networks but require more resources, which also opens up new research opportunities for the future. Another finding is that in 97% of the publications, the authors use supervised learning techniques to train their models. However, with the median dataset size consisting of 2500 samples, deep-learning models cannot be trained from scratch, so it would be beneficial to use other training paradigms, such as self-supervised learning. In addition, we identified a gap of approximately three years between approaches from deep-learning-based computer vision being published and their introduction in industrial visual inspection applications. Based on our findings, we additionally discuss potential future developments in the area of automated visual inspection.

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to preserve and promote cultural heritage has experienced significant growth in recent years. Among the various areas of cultural heritage, numismatics have emerged as a particularly promising field where we can develop AI solutions. Numismatics refers to the study of coins, tokens, paper money, and medals, which play a critical role in understanding human history and culture. However, there are still limited resources available to help researchers and collectors in the identification of coins. This is due to the vast number of coins in circulation, which presents a significant challenge in developing smart tools for classification tasks. This paper aims to provide a contribution to this setting. In particular, we start by creating a new dataset called EURO-Coin, which consists of images showing the side of coins with reliefs and is designed to facilitate the training and testing of AI models for euro coin classification. Then, we propose two approaches that leverage Convolutional Neural Networks and self-attention layers to classify the country and value of the coins. In our experiments, we obtain an accuracy of 86.9% for country classification and an accuracy of 96.4% for value classification. Since deep low‐frequency tremors are considered to be associated with large earthquakes that occur adjacently on the same subducting plate interface, it is important to investigate tremors that occurred before the establishment of modern seismograph networks such as the High Sensitivity Seismograph Network (Hi‐net). We propose a deep‐learning solution to detect evidence of tremors in scanned images of paper seismogram records from over 50 years ago. In this study, we fine‐tuned a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the Residual Network, which was pre‐trained using images of synthetic waveforms from our previous study, using a data set comprised of images generated from real seismic data recorded digitally by Hi‐net to facilitate a supervised analysis. The fine‐tuned CNN was able to predict the presence or absence of tremors in the Hi‐net images with an accuracy of 98.64%. Gradient‐weighted Class Activation Mapping heatmaps created to visualize model predictions indicated that the CNN's ability to detect tremors is not degraded by the presence of teleseisms. Once validated using the Hi‐net images, the CNN was applied to paper seismograms recorded from 1966 to 1977 at the Kumano observatory in southwest Japan, operated by Earthquake Research Institute, The University of Tokyo. The CNN showed potential for detecting tremors in scanned images of paper seismogram records from the past, facilitating downstream tasks such as the creation of new tremor catalogs. However, further training using an augmented data set to control for variables such as inconsistent plotting pen thickness is required to develop a universally applicable model. Plain Language Summary: In 2002, deep low‐frequency tremors, which periodically occur with much smaller amplitudes and longer durations than common earthquakes, were discovered owing to the establishment of dense seismic arrays in Japan. These tremors are considered to be associated with megathrust earthquakes because they occur in deeper regions of plate boundaries compared with common earthquakes. Investigating tremors that occurred before the establishment of dense seismic arrays is important since megathrust earthquakes recur on intervals of 100–200 years, and digital records from modern seismic arrays cover only a fraction of that time. In this study, we developed a convolutional neural network based on the Residual Network (ResNet) that extracts tremors from images of waveforms recorded more than 50 years ago, when seismometers drew waveforms directly on drum‐rolled paper using a pen. The proposed ResNet, which was trained on seismogram images generated from synthetic waveforms and real data recorded digitally by modern seismic arrays, was applied to scanned images of paper seismograms recorded from 1966 to 1977 at an observatory in southwest Japan. A list of tremors was successfully obtained; however, further training using data that accounts for variables such as inconsistent plotting pen thickness is required to develop a universally applicable model. Waste management is one of the biggest challenges facing the world today. The amount of solid garbage created by the growing urban population makes it hard to manage with current technologies. Artificial intelligence methods are used in this paper to identify waste. When waste is found, the system uses the camera as the only data source to determine its location. With greater than 95% certainty, the suggested system can discern between assets and waste in real time.The paper concludes by describing a system that can inspect and gather waste much like a human would. Different programs have been launched by the current Indian government to improve cleanliness and hygienic conditions. For those who are deaf or hard of hearing, sign language is essential as their main form of communication. using ease, sign language gestures may be translated into written or spoken words in real time using the Sign Language Translator, and vice versa. This system interprets and communicates sign language gestures by utilising computer vision and natural language processing (NLP). Given that sign language uses a wide range of hand movements to communicate meaning, it might be difficult to identify certain motions by looking for patterns. Individuals communicate and engage using a variety of gestures. In this study, a human-computer interface that can recognise motions in sign language and properly translate them into text is shown. This paper presents a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify between the conventionally and organically cultivated Memecik varieties of green olives. The image forming method called the rising paper chromatography is utilized in preparing the images of Memecik varieties of green olives for CNN. In the rising chromatography method, 20, 30, and 40% sample concentrations were determined as the suitable concentrations for both organic and conventional olives. The concentrations of AgNO3 and FeSO4 were determined as 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1% for both conventional and organic samples. The visual differences used for differentiation of different types of Memecik green olives are usually determined according to the regional color differences, the vivid color occurrence, the width and the frequency of bowl occurrence, the thin line, and the picks at drop zone by the expert assessors. The testing results in this study verified the effectiveness of the CNN methodology in differentiating between the organically and conventionally cultivated Memecik green olives. The newly designed neural network achieved 100% accuracy. Furthermore, this high accuracy achieved by CNN might suggest that it can be effectively used in place of the expert assessors. This paper aims to craft adversarial queries for image retrieval, which uses image features for similarity measurement. Many commonly used methods are developed in the context of image classification. However, these methods, which attack prediction probabilities, only exert an indirect influence on the image features and are thus found less effective when being applied to the retrieval problem. In designing an attack method specifically for image retrieval, we introduce opposite-direction feature attack (ODFA), a white-box attack approach that directly attacks query image features to generate adversarial queries. As the name implies, the main idea underpinning ODFA is to impel the original image feature to the opposite direction, similar to a U-turn. This simple idea is experimentally evaluated on five retrieval datasets. We show that the adversarial queries generated by ODFA cause true matches no longer to be seen at the top ranks, and the attack success rate is consistently higher than classifier attack methods. In addition, our method of creating adversarial queries can be extended for multi-scale query inputs and is generalizable to other retrieval models without foreknowing their weights, i.e., the black-box setting. In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of papers related to machine learning and the application of machine learning in various fields of science. Belmonte et al. observed that between 2010 and 2018, the growth in the number of papers related to machine learning topics and big data was exponential. They analysed 4240 scientific publications from the Web of Science citation database [1]. Xu et al., in the analysis of publications in the International Journal of Machine Learning and Cybernetics, noted that from 2010 to 2017, the number of publications, the cooperation rate, the total number of authors, and the degree of cooperation had shown an increasing trend [2]. Dokic et al. analysed the publication of papers in which deep learning is applied in the field of agriculture and noticed that the first papers were published in 2014, and in the second half of the second decade of the 21st century, exponential growth in the number of published papers was observed [3]. The objectives of this paper are primarily to analyze the literature related to the application of deep learning in apple growing, to propose the division of these papers depending on the area, and to analyze the observed trends in publishing papers related to this topic. In the analysis, only papers published in scientific journals were considered, and the condition is that they be found in the citation databases of the Web of Science or Scopus. The second section gives a brief overview of deep learning and its development and a presentation of the importance of apple growing in agriculture. The third section is an overview of papers that use deep learning methods and solve some problems in growing apples. This paper proposes applying a novel deep‐learning model, TBDLNet, to recognize CT images to classify multidrug‐resistant and drug‐sensitive tuberculosis automatically. The pre‐trained ResNet50 is selected to extract features. Three randomized neural networks are used to alleviate the overfitting problem. The ensemble of three RNNs is applied to boost the robustness via majority voting. The proposed model is evaluated by five‐fold cross‐validation. Five indexes are selected in this paper, which are accuracy, sensitivity, precision, F1‐score, and specificity. The TBDLNet achieves 0.9822 accuracy, 0.9815 specificity, 0.9823 precision, 0.9829 sensitivity, and 0.9826 F1‐score, respectively. The TBDLNet is suitable for classifying multidrug‐resistant tuberculosis and drug‐sensitive tuberculosis. In this paper, a method based on transfer learning is proposed to recover the three-dimensional shape of cultural relics faces from a single old photo. It can simultaneously reconstruct the three-dimensional facial structure and align the texture of the cultural relics with fewer training samples. The UV position map is used to represent the three-dimensional shape in space and act as the output of the network. A convolutional neural network is used to reconstruct the UV position map from a single 2D image. In the training process, the human face data is used for pre-training, and then a small amount of artifact data is used for fine-tuning. A deep learning model with strong generalization ability is trained with fewer artifact data, and a three-dimensional model of the cultural relic face can be reconstructed from a single old photograph. The methods can train more complex deep networks without a large amount of cultural relic data, and no over-fitting phenomenon occurs, which effectively solves the problem of fewer cultural relic samples. The method is verified by restoring a Chinese Terracotta Warrior with facial cracks and a Buddha with a broken nose. Other applications can be used in the fields such as texture recovery, facial feature extraction, and three-dimensional model estimation of the damaged cultural relics or sculptures in the photos. The addition of traditional elements can enhance the uniqueness of visual communication design. This paper briefly introduced visual communication and applications of traditional elements in visual communication design and applied paper cuts, a handmade graphic element, to the logo design of Dezhou University's 50th anniversary. The convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm and the analytic hierarchy process method were applied to evaluation analysis and compared with the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. The results of the CNN algorithm on the test set verified its effectiveness. The evaluation results of the CNN algorithm were similar to the manual evaluation results, further proving the effectiveness and high efficiency of the CNN algorithm. Smart advertising is an important part of the modern information industry. The main problems of smart advertising in Chinese cities at this stage include cluttered settings, single form, lack of coordination and integration between advertising and cities and urban buildings, and inconspicuous visual effects. In order to deal with these problems, it is necessary to optimize the design of smart advertisements to enhance the visual aesthetic effect. Image aesthetics quality assessment has good application prospects in industries such as image recommendation and image editing aesthetics, and can be used to help smart advertisements improve visual aesthetics. This paper proposes an objective quantitative scoring method for image aesthetics based on a multi-scale feature extraction network, which is a computational intelligence approach. The model is mainly composed of multiple multi-scale feature extraction units cascaded, and each unit contains a feature extraction layer composed of 3 different convolution kernels, fusion layer and mapping layer. The feature extraction layer forms the input end of the network by combining the global view and local view of the image. At the output end, the EMD function is used as the loss function, and the output distribution is a probability density mass function of 1–10 points. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method in this paper, the AVA dataset, which is commonly used in the field of image aesthetic evaluation, is selected for testing experiments. In this paper, two parameters, Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient and accuracy rate, are selected as indicators to evaluate the method in this paper. Forest fire is a severe natural disaster, which leads to the destruction of forest ecology. At present, fire detection technology represented by convolutional neural network is widely used in forest resource protection, which can realize rapid analysis. However, in forest flame and smoke detection tasks, due to continuous expansion of the target range, a better detection effect cannot be achieved. This paper proposes an improved YOLOX method for multi-scale forest fire detection. This method proposes a novel feature pyramid model to reduce the information loss of high-level forest fire feature maps and enhance the representation ability of feature pyramids. Moreover, the method applies a small object data augmentation strategy to enrich the forest fire dataset, making it more suitable for the actual forest fire scene. According to the experimental results, the mAP of the model proposed in this paper reaches 79.64%, which is about 4.89% higher than the baseline network YOLOX. The performance of the existing student classroom behavior detection model is affected by various aspects such as dataset, algorithm and height as well as the differences between different classrooms, and there are problems such as a single dataset, low accuracy and low efficiency. In order to improve the accuracy of student classroom behavior detection algorithm, this paper proposes a student classroom behavior detection method based on improved convolutional neural network algorithm. Firstly, the student behavior detection dataset is constructed, and the student classroom behavior detection technology scheme is designed; secondly, in order to improve the detection accuracy, the features are extracted by using the new jumping bi-directional paths, and the attention mechanism module is added at different positions to improve the path aggregation network; weekly, the embedding positions of the attention mechanism strategy are determined by analyzing multiple sets of experiments, and the proposed student classroom behavior detection algorithm's effectiveness and superiority. Traditional sentiment analysis focuses on text-level sentiment mining, transforming sentiment mining into classification or regression problems, resulting in a sentiment analysis low accuracy rate. Sentiment analysis refers to the use of natural language processing, text analysis, and computational linguistics to systematically identify, extract, quantify, and study sentimental states. Therefore, more scholars have begun to focus on speech recognition and facial expression recognition research, and extracting and analysing people's sentiment tendencies can improve sentiment recognition accuracy. Traditional single-modal sentiment analysis can no longer meet people's needs. Therefore, this paper proposes a multimodal sentiment analysis method based on the multimodal sentiment analysis method that can obtain more sentimental information sources and help people make better decisions. The experimental results in this paper show that the highest recognition rates of CNN-SVM, RNN-SVM, and CRNN-SVM were 76.8%, 71.2%, and 93.5%, respectively. It can be seen that CRNN-SVM has the highest sentiment tendency recognition rate in deep learning, so it is suitable to apply CRNN-SVM to sentiment tendency analysis system design in this paper. The average accuracy rate of the system designed in this paper was 91%, and the stability was also very strong, which shows that the system designed in this paper is meaningful. The main contribution of this paper is based on the limitations of single-mode emotion analysis. Insufficient and imbalance data samples often prevent the development of accurate deep learning models for manufacturing defect detection. Using the improved Johnson et al.'s style migration network as a starting point, this paper proposes a new loss function based on the position information Gram matrix. The new method adds the chunked Gram matrix with position information, and simultaneously, the structural similarity between the style map and the resultant image is added to the style training. The style position information is given to the resultant image, and finally, the resolution of the resultant image is improved with the SRGAN. The new model can effectively migrate the texture structure as well as the color space of the style image, while the data of the content image are kept intact. The simulation results reveal that the image processing results of the new model improve those of the classical Johnson et al.'s method, Google Brain team method, and CCPL method, and the SSIM values of the resulting map and style image are all greater than 0.3. As a comparison, the SSIM values of Johnson et al., Google Brain team, and CCPL are 0.14, 0.11, and 0.12, respectively, which is an obvious improvement. Moreover, with deeper training, the new method can improve the similarity of certain resulting images and style images to more than 0.37256. In this paper, we utilize a machine learning model (the convolutional neural network) to analyze aerial images of winter hard red wheat planted areas and cloud coverage over the planted areas as a proxy for future yield forecasts. We trained our model to forecast the futures price 20 days ahead and provide recommendations for either a long or short position on wheat futures. Our method shows that achieving positive alpha within a short time window is possible if the algorithm and data choice are unique. However, the model's performance can deteriorate quickly if the input data become more easily available and/or the trading strategy becomes crowded, as was the case with the aerial imagery we utilized in this paper. Since plant diseases occurring during the growth process are a significant factor leading to the decline in both yield and quality, the classification and detection of plant leaf diseases, followed by timely prevention and control measures, are crucial for safeguarding plant productivity and quality. As the traditional convolutional neural network structure cannot effectively recognize similar plant leaf diseases, in order to more accurately identify the diseases on plant leaves, this paper proposes an effective plant disease image recognition method aECA-ResNet34. This method is based on ResNet34, and in the first and the last layers of this network, respectively, we add this paper's improved aECAnet with the symmetric structure. aECA-ResNet34 is compared with different plant disease classification models on the peanut dataset constructed in this paper and the open-source PlantVillage dataset. The experimental results show that the aECA-ResNet34 model proposed in this paper has higher accuracy, better performance, and better robustness.
