This article describes a new method for evaluation of radial crush strength of paper cores. Based on the theory of multilayered composites, a mathematical model has been developed to calculate the value of destructive force during radial crushing of spirally shaped paper cores whose layers are made of different materials. Ant-inspired metaheuristic algorithms known as ant colony optimization (ACO) offer an approach that has the ability to solve complex problems in both discrete and continuous domains. ACOs have gained significant attention in the field of water resources management, since many problems in this domain are non-linear, complex, challenging and also demand reliable solutions. The aim of this study is to critically review the applications of ACO algorithms specifically in the field of hydrology and hydrogeology, which include areas such as reservoir operations, water distribution systems, coastal aquifer management, long-term groundwater monitoring, hydraulic parameter estimation, and urban drainage and storm network design. Research articles, peer-reviewed journal papers and conference papers on ACO were critically analyzed to identify the arguments and research findings to delineate the scope for future research and to identify the drawbacks of ACO. Implementation of ACO variants is also discussed, as hybrid and modified ACO techniques prove to be more efficient over traditional ACO algorithms. These algorithms facilitate formulation of near-optimal solutions, and they also help improve cost efficiency. Although many studies are attempting to overcome the difficulties faced in the application of ACO, some parts of the mathematical analysis remain unsolved. It is also observed that despite its popularity, studies have not been successful in incorporating the uncertainty in ACOs and the problems of dimensionality, convergence and stability are yet to be resolved. The article discusses the result of an experimental study which shows that people do not follow the optimal strategy in practice and suggests two strategies for defeating human opponents in rock-paper-scissors (RPS). The study found that the probability of repeating a game on the next trial is well above one-third, while the strategy of always playing the symbol is assessed to be an effective strategy in defeating the symbol that the other player has previously played. The study also observed that the wins of each competition have increased by 26.4%, while the losses are decreased by 9.51%.

This article introduces a team-based model of researchers in a specialty and investigates the manifestation of such teams in a specialty's literature. The proposed qualitative behavioral model, with its mathematical expression as a growth model, is significant because it simultaneously describes the two phenomena of collaboration and author productivity (Lotka's law) in a specialty. The model is nested: A team process models the creation of research teams and the success-breeds-success process of their production of articles, while at a lower level the productivity of authors within teams is also modeled as a success-breeds-success process. Interteam collaboration (weak ties) is modeled as random events. This simple growth model is shown to faithfully mimic six network metrics of bipartite article-author networks. The model is demonstrated on three example article collections from specialties that have a wide range of degree of collaboration: (a) a distance education collection with low collaboration degree, (b) a complex networks collection with typical collaboration degree, and (c) an atrial ablation collection with heavy collaboration degree. Problems that offer multiple revelations during its investigations and that can be approached mathematically in more than one way often involve paper folding and conic sections. These problems can be easily demonstrated with a sheet of wax paper or emulated by the geometer's sketchpad.

The purpose of this article is to analyse how students use inscriptions as tools for thinking and learning in mathematical problem-solving activities. The empirical context is that of learning about geometric series in a small group setting. What has been analysed is how students made use of inscriptions, self-made as well as those provided by text books and teachers, and the role these inscriptions played in the coordination of students' learning/communication. Through the use of inscriptions (made on the chalkboard and with paper and pencil), the students extemalised their thinking while engaging in mathematical reasoning on the topic of geometric series. The inscriptions were significant as anchor points for arguments in the ongoing discussions. Three main issues are highlighted: (a) how the inscriptions used contribute to the process of appropriation, (b) how the students use inscriptions to externalise and clarify their ideas and attempts at meaning-making, and (c) how the inscriptions are conducive to closing the gap between the original problem as given in the text book and the mathematisation necessary. Abstract: A left canonical factorization theorem for rational matrix functions relative to the unit circle is presented. The result is a time invariant version of a recent strict LU factorization theorem for certain semi-separable operators, due to Dewilde (2012) [6]. Explicit formulas for the factors are also given. The theorem is proved, first by using the state space method of Dewilde (2012) [6], and next by using an operator theory approach. For decades, historians have debated the origins of Einstein's special theory of relativity. The derivation of the Lorentz Transformations given by Einstein in 1905 is studied in detail; and it is found to be mathematically inconsistent, and thus in error. Therefore, he must have been aware of the transformations at the time of writing the paper, which is an extremely minority opinion in the general literature. His attempt to rederive them starting from the synchronization condition is incorrect. Though the derivation is flawed, it does not affect many of the concepts he put forth that flow from the Lorentz Transformations. The observations given here will help resolve a long-standing dispute over the priority of the discovery of various parts of the theory. The present comment concerns the correct presentation of an algorithm proposed in the above paper for the glow-curve deconvolution in the case of continuous distribution of trapping states. Since most researchers would use directly the proposed algorithm as published, they should be notified of its correct formulation during the fitting of TL glow curves of materials with continuous trap distribution using this Equation. In this short paper, we look into a conclusion drawn by Alzalg (J Optim Theory Appl 169:32-49, 2016). We think the conclusion drawn in the paper is incorrect by pointing out three things. First, we provide a counterexample that the proposed inner product does not satisfy bilinearity. Secondly, we offer an argument why a pth-order cone cannot be self-dual under any reasonable inner product structure on $$\mathbb {R}^n$$ . Thirdly, even under the assumption that all elements operator commute, the inner product becomes an official inner product and the arbitrary-order cone can be shown as a symmetric cone, we think this condition is still unreasonable and very stringent so that the result can only be applied to very few cases. A generalization of the problem of writing on dirty paper is considered in which one transmitter sends a common message to multiple receivers. Each receiver experiences on its link an additive interference (in addition to the additive noise), which is known noncausally to the transmitter but not to any of the receivers. Applications range from wireless multiple-antenna multicasting to robust dirty paper coding. We develop results for memoryless channels in Gaussian and binary special cases. In most cases, we observe that the availability of side information at the transmitter increases capacity relative to systems without such side information, and that the lack of side information at the receivers decreases capacity relative to systems with such side information. For the noiseless binary case, we establish the capacity when there are two receivers. When there are many receivers, we show that the transmitter side information provides a vanishingly small benefit. When the interference is large and independent across the users, we show that time sharing is optimal. For the Gaussian case, we present a coding scheme and establish its optimality in the high signal-to-interference-plus-noise limit when there are two receivers. When the interference power is large and independent across all the receivers, we show that time-sharing is again optimal. Connections to the problem of robust dirty paper coding are also discussed. Herein, we report a serious error in an important dimensionless parameter employed in the problem, revealing that the defined parameter is dimensional and wrong. Abstract: The study used the simulated e-paper to investigate how the bending radius of curvature (−10cm, plane, and 10cm) and 12 text/background color-combinations of e-paper affect subjects’ visual performance and subjective preference under various ambient illuminance conditions (200 and 500lx). Analysis results indicated that the bending curvature and ambient illuminance did not significantly affect subjects’ visual performance. However, subjects visual performance differed significantly for different text/background color combinations of the simulated e-paper. When the background color of the simulated e-paper was set to yellow-like condition and the luminance of the text was low (2.2 and 4.6cd/m2), subjects’ visual performance was best. Regarding the subjective preferences of subjects, the results of this research also demonstrated that the bending curvature, text/background color combinations and ambient illuminance all significantly affected the subjective preferences of subjects. Subjects exhibited the best preference under the following settings: bending curvature of the simulated e-paper set to plane; background color of the simulated e-paper set to yellow-like condition and low text luminance (2.2 or 4.6cd/m2); high ambient illuminance (500lx). The use of the efficient score statistic in sequential monitoring procedures is reviewed and analysed. Various models that arise in applications are considered. The efficient score vector has the same optimality property as the generalized likelihood ratio, but it has a simple-structure requiring fewer estimations, and this is especially important when the data have a complicated structure. Furthermore, with the efficient score vector it is possible to detect which component of the parameter vector is different from the hypothetical or the historical value. The article describes a study of the foodborne transmission mechanisms for norovirus. It was undertaken for the U.K. Food Standards Agency and received the System Dynamics Society's 2020 "System Dynamics Applications Award". The article opens with descriptions of norovirus, the organisational context and the aims of the study. The first phase involved the construction of a large, fully formulated SD simulation model which included person‐to‐person mechanisms and, newly built, food‐related mechanisms for norovirus transmission. The group modelling process and the model structure are described. The model's existence demonstrated that enough was known about foodborne mechanisms to create an explicit and carefully documented representation that specialists recognised, understood, and accepted. Additionally, a framework for analysing the model's parameters—some currently unknown—helped organise FSA thinking on future research and potential policy levers. A second phase used mathematical analysis of a simplified SD model to assess the relative scale of the foodborne effects. In terms of contributions, this generated insights into possible sources of seasonality and insights into whether the most effective leverage points in the system lay solely within the remit of the FSA or were also within the remits of other government departments. A non-smooth biobjective optimization problem for designing the shape of a slice channel in a paper machine headbox is described. The conflicting goals defining the optimization problem are the ones determining important quality properties of produced paper: 1) basis weight should be even and 2) the wood fibers of paper should mainly be oriented to the machine direction across the width of the whole paper machine. The novelty of the considered approach is that maximum deviations are used instead of least squares when objective functions are formed. For the solution of this problem, a multiobjective genetic algorithm based on nondominated sorting is considered. Abstract: In the present paper we studied the Voronovskaya type theorem for modified Gamma operators presented by A. İzgi in the paper “Voronovskaya type asymptotic approximation by modified Gamma operators” [Applied Mathematics and Computation 217 (2011) 8061–8067]. We show that this theorem is not true. In 1935, Erdös proved that all natural numbers can be written as a sum of a square of a prime and a square-free number. In 1939, Pillai derived an asymptotic formula for the number of such representations. The mathematical review of Pillai's paper stated that the proof of the above result contained inaccuracies, thus casting a doubt on the correctness of the paper. In this paper, we re-examine Pillai's paper and show that his argument was essentially correct. Afterwards, we improve the error term in Pillai's theorem using the Bombieri-Vinogradov theorem. Abstract: In (2012), Leonetti and Siepe [10] considered solutions to boundary value problems of some anisotropic elliptic equations of the type Under some suitable conditions, they obtained an integrability result, which shows that higher integrability of the boundary datum forces solutions to have higher integrability as well. In the present paper, we consider -obstacle problems of the nonhomogeneous anisotropic elliptic equations under some controllable growth and monotonicity conditions. This note concerns the paper "On the controllability of a coupled system of two Korteweg-de Vries equations" by Micu et al. [2]. They study a nonlinear coupled system of two Korteweg-de Vries equations and prove that the system is controllable by using four boundary controls. Here, we prove that in some cases it is possible to get the controllablity of the system by using only two controls. This can be done depending on both the spatial domain and the control time. Dissemination of ideas from theory to practice is a significant challenge in statistics. Quick identification of articles useful to practitioners would greatly assist in this dissemination, thereby improving science. This article uses the citation count history of articles to identify key papers from 1985 to 2002 from 12 statistics journals for applied biostatisticians. One feature requiring attention in order to appropriately rank an article's impact is assessment of the citation accrual patterns over time. Citation counts in statistics differ dramatically from fields such as medicine. In statistics, most articles receive few citations, with 15-year-old articles from five key journals receiving a median of 13 citations compared to 66 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. However, statistics articles in the top 2%-3% continue to gain citations at a high rate past 15 years, exceeding those in JCO, whose counts slow dramatically around 8 years past publication. Articles with the highest expected applied uses 20 years post publication were identified using joinpoint regression. In this evaluation, the fraction of citations that represent applied use was defined and estimated. The false discovery rate, quantification of heterogeneity in meta-analysis, and generalized estimating equations rank as the ideas with the greatest estimated applied impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
